Reviews for Tregenna Hotel
Review 1:Avoid room 16 unless the mattress has been replaced. This particular room isn't suited to a business traveller as there is no work desk or surface where you can put your laptop; unless you stand by the tallboy. Hot water takes an age to get through to the shower - allow an extra 10 minutes to your morning routine. Morning staff are a little grumpy.
Review 2:Friendly evening staff. The food is good and the servings are ample. Easy check out.
Review 3:although Wi-Fi was free and 'did not drop' there is no where in the room to work - this was a business trip, while I may only log on for an hour or so I still need a place to work other than the end of the bed
Review 4:Friendly staff, comfortable bed, decent breakfast which was hot
Review 5:Room hygiene needs attention, in our room which borders the car park there was serious damp and mold growing on the wallpaper in the corners of the room. Shower wasn't working well and the radiator in the bathroom was stuck on full heat.
Review 6:Friendly and flexible staff, we requested breakfast an hour earlier one morning and it wasn't a problem for them at all to open the kitchen and cook us all an English breakfast. Handy having the car park outside the room.
Review 7:The toilet didn't flush properly Breakfast now £6 where as previous stays, it was included
Review 8:Great value for money, good location, free wifi, free off-road parking
Review 9:- no hot water for shower/bath/washing hands - the room decoration is out of date and should be improved (some water stains on the ceiling and coloured toilet seat) - walls are thin and easily heard
Review 10:- the location is fair
Review 11:The extractor fan was full of dust & shower not attached to the wall, I think it's getting decorated atm though so hopefully a little refurb will do good
Review 12:Very friendly & welcoming but quite noisy as open for non residents, the shower was loose on the wall but was clean, warm & friendly
Review 13:Lumpy bed in the first room offered; just acceptable in the second room. Shower has very poor water pressure and water takes a long time to get hot.
Review 14:Good parking. Close to town.
Review 15:Dirty kettle, dirty floor & the rain coming in through the ceiling & dropping on the bed side lamp, they knew of this as they had attempted to fix the plasterboard but not the roof
Review 16:Nothing
Review 17:Not much choice for breakfast, no fruit or yought, no different fruit juices, no different selections of tea. The room was in need of refurbishment, draws missing, mattress worn out, unable to turn heater off in the bathroom.
Review 18:Close to the breacon beacons, fried breakfast was good.
Review 19:Nothing this is my second stay here and i will use it again when visiting friends in Merthyr
Review 20:Nice friendly chap in reception and very comfortable room with plenty of tea and coffee available
Review 21:Shower curtain a bit mouldy Stained Cushion lets room down
Review 22:Linen was really clean and fresh Room was clean and warm Staff friendly Car park had spaces Comfortable bed
Review 23:Only thing wrong is the hotel is at the top of a hill. Kids and the unfit (like myself) may not like the walk home, but it was good exercise
Review 24:Nice accommodation, rooms out back suitable for family with young children (room had bunk bed) friendly staff and not overpriced.
Review 25:Room was a bit dirty on arrival although this improved during the week. The room Smeeled quite strongly of smoke.
Review 26:Room was a good size and comfortable and the area was very quiet. Free parking is good and the staff seemed helpful. Breakfast was nice.
Review 27:My room door closed very loudly if not held. I could hear my neighbouring rooms closing their doors.
Review 28:Evening meal was very good and fairly priced. Breakfast was great and very good value for money
Review 29:It was so very cold, no heat at all. Couldn't sleep. Bed matress springs sticking up. Thank goodness for coffee making facilities in room! Dirty stained. cushion and chair. TV didn't work.
Review 30:Room comfortable, mostly clean. Bed fresh, clean linen. Quiet.
Review 31:It is a two star hotel some scuff marks could be wiped clean and a lick of paint to bring it up to a 3 star
Review 32:Nice quiet large room,Brilliant breakfast and staff very helpfull, nothing was to much trouble No problem with parking,we are 65 and was only 10 mins walk to town centre, area is very quiet no noise
Review 33:Wouldn't pay again for this poor breakfast, everywhere around was looking much better (talking about quality and quantity)
Review 34:Don't know if sounds good but for me was funny seeing guy servin and cooking at the same time (talking about poor breakfast)
Review 35:Not a very happy place. Staff are efficient but not very friendly. Not much water pressure in the shower.
Review 36:Adequate for what I wanted. Wi-fi was good and there is secure parking. Good breakfast.
Review 37:the single bed in room 21 was so concave, it was like sleeping in the bottom of a boat - they need to throw that bed base and mattress away
Review 38:brekky was good staff kindly allowed us to change room
Review 39:We were in two of the chalets. They were clean and spacious. A short walk from the centre of town and good location for the local countryside. Staff were friendly.
Review 40:Only downside for me was the wifi signal very week in our room but this is a common experience with other hotels.
Review 41:Judging by other people comments I think we had the best room, named " Marthyr "
Review 42:The staff seem unable to smile and give an overall impression of not wanting to be there. Finishing breakfast at 9:00 on a Sunday morning is clearly done for the convenience of the staff rather than the guests.
Review 43:Cooked breakfast was good, but some fruit would have been a welcome addition alongside the usual cereal choice.
Review 44:The hotel is very tired and dirty. Our room was musty and the bathroom was mouldy. The bed wasfalling apart and my husband had to tighten the screws that hold the bed together.
Review 45:The menu in the dining room for the evening meal was a bit limited, if you didn't like seasoned spicy food it was a struggle. We managed to have something omitting the seasoned sauce by request.
Review 46:The staff were very helpful and courteous, the room was clean and adequate for our needs. Breakfast was lovely and service brilliant.
Review 47:there was mould around back of the door, there was a very large crack in the toilet, which was covered by sealant, not our hair in the bath,no plug in sink,it was generally pretty tatty
Review 48:the location was good,as a merthyr boy,my family have used this hotel for a few generations, the breakfast was good , the price was ok,the staff were ok
Review 49:I didn't like that the shower curtain was broken and weren't able to pull the toilet window together if it got cold.
Review 50:I liked how staff were willing to help anyway they could. Room was clean. Food portions are a good size for the price. Clean towels were provided.
Review 51:Very dated interior, the staff not very helpful, the breakfast as we were told while trying to cancel is cooked the night before!!! So needless to say the breakfast was totally tasteless and dry , still waiting to be refunded. Doors left unlocked after they were cleaned,
Review 52:Location and that's about it
Review 53:Firstly we were told that we had to have a twin room despite having booked and confirmed a double. Secondly, the twin room still had dirty bedding and towels in it. Thirdly, miraculously found a triple room - however, this still had a large amount of other peoples hair in the bathroom, in the bath, around the loo and on the wall tiles. The shower curtain was really stained with pink body fat. More body fat was all around the taps and shower mixer. No undersheet on the bed-just one sheet. Room was cold. Grubby paintwork and door into bathroom was sticky with grease on the wood. Bathroom fittings were broken - no shelf to put personal items. Carpet in bedroom stained. Divan covering was dirty. Bath towels were tiny.
Review 54:Breakfast
Review 55:Not very friendly staff. No one talks to you. If you do manage to get attention it's when they finish on a phone call or computer or bar etc. Our bath room smelt of drains that never went away. We put freshness our own air freshners in bath room. Mould on ceiling in bedroom. You can hear TV In next room late at night very early morning as its on the wall where I bed was .
Review 56:Nice size room.
Review 57:The old hotel has been renovated in a good style. Rooms are very comfortable, baths are excellent and wi-Fi is easy. Proximity to Cardiff and the. Big Pit are big positives.
Review 58:A bit dated Could do with a deep clean eg dust on top of wardrobe etc
Review 59:Nice airy bedroom with plenty of light Good basic breakfast Good value within walking distance of shops
Review 60:The room was absolutely filthy. There were spider webs everywhere. The bath wasn't clean and the shower was very impractical due to it being on a attic wall. The sky light cover didn't fit so room was bright very early. Tv remote didn't work, when i reported this, the staff were very patronising, followed me up to my room to check....as if I was pressing the on button wrong. I could go on and on
Review 61:Leaving
Review 62:A cobweb or two, creaky floors.
Review 63:If you're looking for issues, you'll find them. Other than that, the room size was huge, facilities dated but perfectly fine. I couldn't complain for a huge room for £45.
Review 64:Not a big deal but we did ask for a sink plug that had been misplaced. But not received.
Review 65:Size of room. Comfortable dining room. Massive breakfast. Good price for 3 course evening meal.
Review 66:On one of the evenings the car park was full. The advert clearly says there is parking. This needs to be removed. The walls are also very thin, there was a switch above the bed that would normally operate the room light but did nothing and the TV had been unplugged.
Review 67:Easy to check in. Not far from front door.
Review 68:Good comfortable clean room, good breakfast, friendly staff. Hotel is perfect location for exploring the Brecons, i.e. you can be at the foot of Penyfan in 15 minutes.
Review 69:cleaners kept leaving the door unlocked when we were out for the day,no food served sunday after 2pm,bar closed after 2pm sunday and not reopened sunday night
Review 70:the friendliness of the staff, the food was very good
Review 71:A shame there was no room to fit two adults and two children, so we had to book separate rooms. Food hygiene rating was 2 star so we chose not to eat there.
Review 72:Rooms were clean and reasonably spacious. Beds were comfortable. Reasonable price for the night. Had onsite parking.
Review 73:The bed was a little uncomfortable but not intolerable; generally all other areas of the hotel, like the dining room and bar, were vey comfortable. The room and bathroom was musty but it had rained and was raining very heavily while we were there and this could have been the cause.
Review 74:Older, traditional style hotel. The en-suite chalet style accommodation we had was roomy and had enough space for two of us. Quiet location. Good parking. Meals were very good. I left a pair of jeans hanging up in the in the wardrobe when we left; when I phoned they had already been taken to reception for collection; thank you! We met the owner who was very friendly. I would stay at this hotel again.
Review 75:I booked à room for 2 adults and 2grandchildren, 2 rooms were booked for 1 adult and 1 child.booking. com Cancelled à room, When we arrived we were told we had to pay an extra 30pounds for the 3 year old as they would not allow her to share à bed with her 9 year old sister.Had to take room as we had travelled 5hours and the girls were exhausted. Also not given à receipt for cash paid no breakfast included bad value for 75 pounds
Review 76:Room suitable
Review 77:Facilities are outdated; we were put off having breakfast here once we saw the low score food hygiene sticker in the window (2 out of 5)
Review 78:Comfy bed and decent size room; entertaining decor!! Overall ok value for money
Review 79:Basic room - cannot compare to travelodge. Coffee cups in room still wet! Drove through slightly dodgey looking area to get to it
Review 80:Short drive to retail parks and A470. Free wifi
Review 81:Just a few cobwebs (ceilings are very high!!!)
Review 82:The welcome we recieved was very friendly and warm. After a long journey, we ate in the restaraunt. Food and service was excellent!!!
Review 83:The fact the room had a double bed and a single bed and out family have two adults and a small child could have stayed no problem I didn't like the fact I had to pay an extra £15
Review 84:Nothing special
Review 85:Not a bad experience, just could have done with serving breakfast past 9am. Toilet door lock did not work (was with my grandfather). Door to the room was quite stiff and hard to open.
Review 86:Bath shower we would rather a shower only - steps to go to the chalet - not an issue for us but could be a problem for disabled
Review 87:Safe Parking near the chalet/ Breakfast and stay was good value for what we paid. Good for family stay.
Review 88:The hotel is crying for refurbishment. In room No 6 one window handle is completely torn off, the other one is so loose that you have a feeling it might stay in your hand :D Mould on ceiling in bathroom
Review 89:Generally it's all fine, clean and simple.
Review 90:Cleanliness left a lot to be desired, especially the bathroom. A dirty toilet and a bathtub plug stuck with hair are not acceptable in my opinion, despite the low price. Regretted ordering breakfast.
Review 91:Low warm water pressure. Hotel would benefit from a refurbishment.
Review 92:Very close to bus station and High Street - only a short walk uphill. A decent sized room.
Review 93:Poor view (but we didn't expect a view). Noisy radiator pipes
Review 94:Quiet, comfortable, friendly, reasonably priced. Small issue with shower was resolved quickly without fuss or argument.
Review 95:After driving for 8 hours you don't want to hear someone using a hammer for something in the next room. The bed had more lumps than a herd of camels.the shower turned to the side when switched on.
Review 96:Bed was really soft. Too soft and had springs that stuck up making it a little lumpy I think breakfast should have been inclusive too. I'm not paying a fiver for breakfast when it's only £2.99 in the wetherspoons round the corner
Review 97:Good location Nice sized room Reasonable price
Review 98:The shower in my daughters room didn't work, the shower curtain in my room was horrible! An old fashioned clock/radio/alarm attached to the wall went off at 2am, scaring myself and my children! I thought I'd turned it off but it went off again 20 minutes later! It was very annoying and unnecessary.
Review 99:Clean rooms, spacious rooms.
Review 100:Poor water pressure in the shower has not been resolved.
Review 101:Spacious room, clean and comfortable. Food is consistently excellant. This was my third stay and I will be returning for a fourth.
Review 102:We were relocated due to no heating or hot water at the tregenna to their sister hotel -the castle . Very poor parking facilities . No hot water there either ! meant we couldn't shower at all . Other minor problems too and decor very tired and out dated . Follow up customer service was bad in that we were basically told we were lying about the hot water and no response to our emails . No food taken so unable to comment but --- Would not stay again or recommend the Castle hotel .
Review 103:Poor water pressure in the shower. Decor could do with updating.
Review 104:Clean room with comfortable bed, sheets, towles etc clean. This is my second visit and I was not dissapointed. Excellant value for money and the food is briliant. Well worth a visit.
Review 105:Poo in the toilet We chose this hotel for its malt whisky and real ale selection... Unfortunately these turned out to be larger and cheap spirits. Very disappointed
Review 106:Breakfast - fantastic and value for money vegetables and meat full English breakfast - great start to the day. Upgrading us to a family room in the middle of the night after we gave up battling with the springs in the mattress.
Review 107:On arrival on a Sunday evening at 7.15, it was a surprise to find the restaurant and bar were closed, although they poured me a drink, but said I would have to drink it in my room. The room had no hot water or heating and I was offered another room so that I could use the shower the following morning - so much for en-suite facilities. I then changed rooms on Monday evening to another room, which had been liberally sprayed with air freshener, to mask a musty smell. The shower was weak, and you had to move around to get wet. The wi-fi was out of action all 4 nights I was there, and when I asked for a discount, this was refused. The decoration was tired, and the dressing table in the second room was for a midget. I will not recommend this hotel to others in my Company who are looking to stay in Merthyr on business.
Review 108:Very helpful staff.
Review 109:My room was above a bar and I could hear every word being spoken. The decor is dated and bizarre and the pillows were pretty thin. Nice people but just needs a major update.
Review 110:Staff friendly, nice busy atmosphere with people using the restaurant and easy parking at the back.
Review 111:Poor water pressure meant taking a shower was not enjoyable especially as the water temperature fluctuated - I was told they are looking to address this. Decor is a bit rough round the edges but didn't expect the Ritz !!!
Review 112:Quality of food better than many restaurants, succulent tender steak highly reccommended. Friendly and welcoming staff, clean and spacious rooms.
Review 113:Fair sized single room and en-suite with bath and shower. Ideally situated for touring the Brecon beacons and environs. Large warm radiators one can turn up if needed! No need to keep my motorbike on the road as have their own off street car park on the property.
Review 114:Only one tiny niggle. There was no shelf in the bathroom to put toiletries.
Review 115:I had been allocated a single room upstairs. I use crutches but would have coped and had not asked for any special treatment. As soon as I arrived, without me asking, my room was changed to a downstairs one with easy access to everywhere. Superb!
Review 116:Extractor fan in toilet choked with fluff and dust.
Review 117:Warm welcome and professional manner of staff. Room comfortable, warm, everything worked. Décor getting a bit tired, investment needed.
Review 118:Only one bedside light(should be 1 each side) radio not working, no bath mat, shower within existing bath - not ideal for ease of access for older persons
Review 119:free off-road car parking, early breakfast available from 7 am
Review 120:Previous customer's shower packets left on shower shelf my son hasdust mite allergy...there was massive clumps of dust behind theradiators...my son suffered with his breathing as a consequence!
Review 121:Good size room comfortable beds friendly staff
Review 122:Leaving!
Review 123:Room was fantastic, very large. We stored our bikes safely and even got access to an outside tap to wash off some of the mud. The food was yummy and the breakfast essential fuel for the climbs at Bike Park South Wales. Would recommend and go back.
Review 124:Shower didn't work first night, but we did get other room next night, so no real problem. People leaving with car midst of night, right in front of window, woke us up, not good located rooms.
Review 125:Excellent food, thai, indian and traditional english for very good price. Staff super friendly, helpful. Would go back any time but ask for room facing front of main hotel.
Review 126:(leaving the comfortable bed in the mornings).
Review 127:being close to the mountins exelent and plenty food good value for money friendly staff flexible time for meals
Review 128:Unable to have a decent shower in the morning - water would only, at best, run tepid and the ceiling above the shower was black with mould. Little interest from the receptionist when this was pointed out. Disappointing.
Review 129:The bar area and restaurant facilities were good and the staff polite. Food was good as was the breakfast. The room (chalet style) was clean and the bed comfortable.
Review 130:There is no lift so elderly couples need to ask for a ground floor room. The shower in the bath is unreachable for anyone under 5ft 8". The room was clean but the mattress was hard.
Review 131:The staff are friendly and the location is handy for the town centre, Off street parking is available. The breakfast is excellent and despite the shortcomings (no lift poor shower) for a short stay it is good value for money.
Review 132:Don't be put off by the entrance which is a little dated but the new owner is making a real effort to upgrade the hotel.
Review 133:Our room was a very pleasant surprise, we didn't expect a 4 poster bed and a lovely seating area, 2 leather sofas and a nice coffee table. Excellent room
Review 134:I couldn't say a thing about it i didn't like
Review 135:5 minutes from shopping main roads and main attractions are a good drive in pretty settings are close by
Review 136:- very dusty and other problems, eyes and nose irritated and- or painfull within minites. Never had such a stong reaction to dust, even had a nose bleed. - we felt very unsafe. No decent lock on the room and other aspects. - huge damp problem, wet spots on walls, towels would not dry, mirror and window were also proof of this huge damp problem that most be going on for long. Nobody cared enough to clean the windows, dirtiest I ever saw. Mould is very unhealthy. - furniture and appliances are old, broken and dirty. E.g. no light bulb in the lamp, bad bed, we did not dare to use the tea maker. Missing parts of furniture etc. - heating was not working. For a bit when we asked. We were told there was a problem with the boiler. - shower only gave very hot water. Not safe to shower the kids. - the air from the kitchen was blown right into our room windows. Not a pleasant smell. There was also a smell of fire and smoke. - when we complained and checked out two days early we did not receive the response one would expect. The problems I mentioned were to much to write down, I was asked to write a letter to the manager!??? Still had to pay. What a horrible way to treat people, especially childeren. My 4-year old was very upset we had to move again. What a horrible way to make money, not caring one little bit about the well being, comfort or the littlest respect for you guests. Shamefully. Room should be closed till everything is sorted out.
Review 137:Seemed ok at first glance.
Review 138:Only seemed to be two members of staff around. The man on reception who also served breakfast and the lady who served me in the bar. On arrival I had a very muted welcome and no help was offered to take my suitcase up the two flights of stairs ( no lift) , the man on reception just let me struggle with a heavy case. I asked to order a taxi to a venue I was going to for the evening, he didn't seem to know where the place was in the town, and then when I came down at the agreed pick up time, no taxi to be seen. It was left to the other female staff member to call me another one as it seemed the man on reception had forgot to book it ! Breakfast consisted of one juice (orange) and a small selection of boxed cereals, the full English was lacking in taste and variety and all served by the reception chap from the night before who barely uttered a friendly word.
Review 139:The staff member behind the bar was helpful and friendly and the Brie and Bacon starter I had as a snack was good.
Review 140:had difficulty to sleep (snoring noice transpired through the thin walls; felt the metal of the spring mattress); the bathroom needs looking after
Review 141:very friendly hotel staff, quiet neighbourhood, clean linen, tea making equipment
