Reviews for The Morritt Hotel
Review 1:We stayed at the Morritt for a friends wedding and the quirkiness of the hotel started as I tried to book a room. We had been informed on the invite anyone staying as part of the wedding party would receive a 10% discount but on phoning the Morritt to book, we were told 'this was only for the first 10 rooms and they have all gone'. We were quoted a price for a room of £125. On cross-checking with Booking.com the rooms on Booking.com was showing as cheaper so I asked if the one offered by the Morritt was the same room and was told 'that room and price (on Booking.com) would not be available and the price was £125 for the cheapest available room. Needless to say I booked the room on-line and saved some money. On checking into the hotel we were shown to our room on the 2nd floor. The room was pleasant but very cold due to old sash windows which didn't close fully (which isn't unusual for old county hotels). As the heating in the room wasn't on we phoned reception and were told the heating is only set to come at 14:30 so the room never really managed to get up to an acceptable temperature even though I had the radiator switched on full.As a wedding venue the Morritt was very good and the food, wines and service excellent. The only thing which let the night down was the DJ who in my opinion was the worst I've ever come across. It takes far more to being a DJ than loading a pre-set playlist into BPM and pressing start. It only became acceptable once members of the wedding party started asking for requests and the DJ moved away from his playlist. The last thing is probably the most bizarre thing that has ever happened to me in a hotel. When were came down to breakfast there were many other wedding guests sat at various tables but few spare tables some of which were set up and some not. However we were asked by the waitress if we would mind joining a group of people on a large central table, none of which we knew.
Review 2:A very slippery floor in the bathroom and little hot water from the shower.
Review 3:The walls in the bar were painted with people who I was told were locals many years ago, there is also a lovely open fire in the bar to enjoy.
Review 4:The bedroom was quite chilly and the shower was not very powerful.
Review 5:The spa was a very enjoyable and relaxing experience. Good food and service in the bistro.
Review 6:The earlier refusal by (male) staff to book a table for supper because of 'policy' not to do so for bistro or bar on Mondays when the restaurant was closed. The (female) staff on duty when we arrived sorted out what was a non-problem. We were, after all, resident guests!
Review 7:Being back at the Morritt Arms which we have known for many years. The friendly staff and the splendid service of supper (Ella and her male colleague were an example of careful attention), the quiet location with good walking on the doorstep. Excellent food in the bar.
Review 8:If you stay in room 20 I hope they fixed the shower. We stayed 2 nights and the water pressure was so low it took ages to use on our first day. The next day was even worse, the tiniest trickle, (there was no bath option to try) such a shame as it really spoilt our experience. We did tell the staff but we're not offered any sort of reduction for the considerable inconvenience and dissapointment. Apart from that it was a nice hotel, but the ability to bathe and or shower is fudamental hence our low rating.
Review 9:Good location and nice hotel. The staff were very nice.
Review 10:We should of booked the spa ahead of our stay as gets full, tv a little small but nit picking really, would stop here again 100%
Review 11:Value for money was great, clean, friendly
Review 12:The wifi was really weak and didn't allow any search engines. It also didn't work in the out rooms. At the check out on Thursday, the woman was interesting - she asked questions but required no answers. Some rooms are unsuitable for tall people, which needs to be mentioned. The restaurant food was too expensive. Just one person serving breakfast (very competent) so things not topped up like fresh fruit.
Review 13:The bar staff and one of the reception staff were amazing.
Review 14:Didn't like being told dining room full and to come back in one hour, when only 2 people in the room. On returning there were only 5 couples there. Bistro rather small.
Review 15:Dinner was excellent and worth waiting for. Peaceful location, nice garden.
Review 16:Nothing.
Review 17:The location was quiet and the staff were friendly. The bed was very comfortable and breakfast the next day was amazing! I would definitely stay again.
Review 18:A lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. Cosy, friendly atmosphere. The room we had was very comfortable with lots of nice touches, ie bottled water and toiletries. The breakfast was truly gorgeous. We hope to go back.
Review 19:Only a double bed would have liked a king size Room was cold on arrival No plastic cups in bathroom No hand rail above bath for senior citizens
Review 20:Location Very pleasant dining room Extensive breakfast menu Very pleasant staff Lovely fluffy and large towels
Review 21:Rooms very dated, wifi didn't work other than at hotel reception, TV didn't work, shower was rubbish! Hotel staff a bit inept really!! Had to pay extra to use spa facilities, which a family member did only to find some things weren't working eg sauna.
Review 22:Location and setting is lovely, food is also very tasty!
Review 23:Location of room directly above the main entrance so noise from cars til early hours of the morning. Unfortunately the room was also immediately above the dining room so noise from there as well. Breakfast portion quite small and fried egg undercooked. No offer of additional coffee or tea. Choice on buffet limited.
Review 24:Character of the room was good, staff very friendly
Review 25:If you have been out all day and return to the hotel and have a drink in the bar before going to your room to change for the evening it has no atmosphere, even low background music would help. Having a meal is like being in god's waiting room even though the food was lovely and staff very friendly. After your meal relaxing on the sofa's with a drink is hard work as it is so quiet with no atmosphere it's like being in a library, but such pleasant surroundings and could be so much more to end the day.
Review 26:Lovely old property with modern twists. Lovely garden to have a drink if the weather is good enough
Review 27:Spacious comfortable rooms, pleasant location, availability of food out of hours, good breakfast, reasonable pricing--all inclined one to plan the journey north so as to take in another night at the Morritt on the A66.
Review 28:Not exactly bad but our lasagne was a bit stodgy and didn't match all the other excellent aspects of our stay.
Review 29:The atmosphere of luxury and comfort and the quirky wall paintings in the bar.
Review 30:Booked for a three day work session due to quiet remote location and advertised wifi availability. No useable wifi and no one seemed interested. Changed the three night booking to one and relocated to another hotel.
Review 31:Photos look much better than it did in real life. Wifi wasn't working when we arrived... had to wait the next morning for the router to be restarted. Max speed 0.5MB/s which isn't the hotel's fault, but not great. Shower was very low flow.
Review 32:Staff seemed friendly. Bed was very comfortable. Clean.
Review 33:I was woken up at dawn by a lot of clattering noise in the courtyard, accompanied by voices of the staff. I mentioned it at checkout but it did not seem to be taken seriously. I therefore sent 2 emails over the 2 following days but have not had any acknowledgement. This spoiled an otherwise lovely stay.
Review 34:We liked the position of the hotel.
Review 35:Reception staff were very unwelcoming on arrival and throughout the period of our stay, rest of staff were very pleasant. Bed in room 15 was very soft and provided little support. No separate shower.
Review 36:Good country location, although close to major highway traffic noise was not a distraction. Breakfast and bar food was very good, hotel decoration was perfect for period of property and had a lovely garden.
Review 37:Minor details like a bulb that needed replacing were quickly put right. A wrongly timed alarm call was another matter. At least it was earlier than later.
Review 38:I loved the old building and how it had been adapted to give the luxuries of a spa bath etc. The setting was great.Greta Bridge is unique - a step back in time and I would like to return sometime..
Review 39:The lavatory cistern extremely slow to fill. Bath had no safety mat and no grab handles. Only one comfortable chair. Bed Pillows needed renewing.
Review 40:The location and garden The public rooms
Review 41:Unfortunately they let themselves down a bit on our last night. There was a large party function being catered for and the regular customers were neglected at dinner as a result. Waited almost an hour to be served. Staff very apologetic but could not cope with numbers that evening. Management fault.
Review 42:Situation good with polite efficient staff and good food.
Review 43:Wi fi almost none existent. No mobile phone signal. If a function takes place during your stay, you can't get an evening meal before 9pm. Restaurant food pretentious and not very well cooked.
Review 44:Lovely old building, nice grounds and helpful staff. Walks from the door. Great area to explore the surroundings.
Review 45:I booked 2 nights stay here for my partners 60th birthday and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break. Staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We also booked some time at the Spa in the hotel grounds, which was excellent.
Review 46:Breakfasts would be better starting earlier, 7.30 is a little late.
Review 47:Accommodating staff, Fab Four poster room, tasty breakfast, I have it on good authority (friends) that the spa is nice, walks directly from the hotel.
Review 48:Everything about this hotel is superb, great room, friendly staff, wonderful dining and good choice of beers. Next door is the spa centre which we did not use but it looks stunning.
Review 49:None
Review 50:Initial problem with bed mattress - one of us has orthopaedic problems and needs a firm bed. The reception staff did their utmost to find a room with the hardest mattress - cheerfully and above the call of duty!
Review 51:Bistro dinner menu a little limited, but the food was good and reasonably priced.
Review 52:Extremely comfortable bed and a first-rate breakfast. Spacious room on the ground floor, convenient for the dog! Excellent value for money, and there's a lovely spa adjacent too.
Review 53:No wifi access throughout stay so I couldn't work as planned. Spa access for guests seemed a bit disjointed. Spa area very small and not altogether a relaxing experience. Didn't realise main restaurant was 'haute cuisine' so being told I'd have to wait for 30 mins for a table to be available as I didn't have a reservation when it was empty but for two tables seemed a little pretentious. Especially as I was a guest at the hotel. Great food and presentation though.
Review 54:Beautiful room and very friendly staff over the weekend. Lovely location. Good food.
Review 55:Wall next to the bed banging & vibrating late at night. We think it was due to the pipe work banging in the walls. It was so loud it woke us up. No mobile reception & free wifi was very very poor.
Review 56:The Spa was very good. Breakfast was also very good. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 57:Bar meal, the rib eye steak at an eye watering £25, it is highlighted on the menu, but what arrived was more like a normal bar meal of circa£12 to £15, also, the menu for main restaurant in your room is only a " sample menu", I understand the use of seasonal vegetables, but either make the sample menu clearer that it is a sample, or perhaps put up to date menus in each bedroom.
Review 58:The setting, the ambience and the garden cottage room
Review 59:The lack of a meal when we arrived despite having been tod that meals would be available. The bedroom was unpleasantly hot owing to boxed in hot pipes forming the headboard of the beds. Wifi was poor and only available in public areas.
Review 60:The Spa
Review 61:dining room was too cold. The food was superb apart from the beef which was very poor quality.
Review 62:staff, location, stylish hotel, bar, gardens and lounge
Review 63:I stayed on the top floor and the shower was unusable due to very poor water pressure, I had to use the bath which would have been ok if I was 2ft tall.
Review 64:Staff were very helpful, food was good.
Review 65:I cant say it was bad but just an observation, there was a minor drain smell in my room but did not detract from the stay
Review 66:Fantastic Breakfast and good evening meal in the bistro
Review 67:We did book a meal before we went but got a call saying that the restaurant was not available due to a function Not a problem in the end as went to the coach house for a meal which was superb The connection to the garage was a real bonus and we used these facilities
Review 68:We expected a king size bed in a superior room, but it was only a double, not as comfortable as would have liked. Menu was limited both in restaurant and bistro.
Review 69:Hotel was comfortable, lots of places to sit both inside and outside the gardens were lovely. Breakfast was very good with lots of choices.
Review 70:The shower was not very powerful but that didn't spoil our stay.
Review 71:The hotel was in a perfect location for us to travel to Barnard castle and Richmond, set in beautiful countryside. The toiletries in the bathroom were lovely. The food in the brasserie was great and the breakfast was perfect.
Review 72:Room 11 was a bit cold even with heating full up. Very drafty round the windows. Blinds moved in the wind coming through. Would not be an issue in good weather/summer. Noticeable drop in temperature within the hotel as you approach this wing.
Review 73:Helpful and very pleasant staff. Very quiet location. Liked the comfortable furniture - small sofa and armchair within the room.
Review 74:Hated our room- fussy wobbly mock antique style 4 poster bed Paid extra for a "superior " room but the room we got was a real disappointment It did have a nice modern bathroom, but most of the rooms shown on the website had a much more contemporary look
Review 75:The staff and the food
Review 76:Little bit cold in the room
Review 77:How quiet it was, staff were welcoming always on hand if you wanted anything Very romantic retreat, roll top bath was lush on a scale of a 100 it comes tops
Review 78:Vacuuming downstairs at 5.45am wasn't appreciated!
Review 79:Quirky and characterful hotel with old fashioned charm. Staff are very pleasant and food is good!
Review 80:There was an excellent choice of dishes at breakfast. The hotel is an interesting and individual building, with very individual details and history. It was perfect for our trip.
Review 81:Breakfast waitress was attentive and caring, however the waitress who served in the bistro the previous night was unfriendly and unhelpful, as were the reception staff encountered on both our day of arrival and departure. The towels in the bathroom were tatty with frayed edges, the bedroom smelled old and dusty and corridors felt quite eery. The bed was comfy and bathroom facilities were lovely. Breakfast was nice but underwhelming, not a great choice. We wouldn't return before a refurb, overpriced at £125 B&B.
Review 82:The garage spa provided a brilliant experience, what friendly and attentive staff! Excellent facilities with a luxurious feel. Can't wait to return.
Review 83:Constantly being told 'You're welcome' when I acknowledged the delivery of the various parts of my breakfast. Also the fact that my wife's Haddock was not adequately cooked, and when we drew the attention of the waitress, she removed it without any apology or effort to rectify, simply saying she 'would tell the chef'. Nothing further was heard. Otherwise, the food was very good throughout our two days.
Review 84:Personable and attentive staff; willing and welcoming, particularly at Reception and in the Bar. In the main, very good breakfasts. Wonderful country, and some very good walks behind the hotel, as well as much else to see locally. I expect we shall return with pleasure.
Review 85:The portion size of our bar meal was small. No Veggie breakfast option and no concern showed about this by the waitress. Parts of the public areas are looking tatty. Saw a restuarant waiter serve to drinks holding them in his hand rather than from a tray.
Review 86:The room was very comfortable if a bit chilly at first. The Bar waiter was very helpful.
Review 87:I asked for a room with disabled access because my father at 92 struggles with stairs. The downstairs room they gave him was very nice but we were unaware of the hike to it! Would be nice had they notified us it was quite a distance. We had to pick him in the car for breakfast!
Review 88:The hotel has a great atmosphere. Food was lovely, staff friendly.
Review 89:The water in my bedroom was cold/lukewarm first thing in the morning, i.e. 6.15 am.As a result I was unable to have a shower.
Review 90:Very good staff, a comfortable atmosphere and very reasonable price for bed and breakfast.
Review 91:Wifi poor all else good
Review 92:Friendly and helpful staff in a lovely building full of character. amazing menu and excellent food. The chef came out to chat to people after the meal and was able to give interesting information about food sources and menus. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
Review 93:Nothing
Review 94:Having stayed several times before I was expecting a good standard and if honest this was the best. Room spot, bar comforted, dining, this was absolutely superb and well worth staying for. The evening dinner was presented very well and each course mouth watering. Definitely staying again and will be buying my staff some short breaks here, although I am tempted to keep it too myself.
Review 95:The Morrit Hotel is known locally as a cheap location for weddingparties and best avoided. A very noisy hotel, with loud music playingtill after midnight. The run down shabby interior bares littleresemblance to the pictures on their website. The standard twin room wewere given was very small with poor fittings. It was too noisy to eat inresetarunt so we drove the 10 miles into Barnard Castle and had anexcellent dinner at the 3 Horshoes Hotel. A far better place, onlywished we had stayed instead!
Review 96:Leaving in the morning.
Review 97:we were in a front room it was very warm we had the window open and the noise from the road was not good- kept me a wake we would request a room not on the front another time
Review 98:super breakie lovely room very nice shampoo and conditioner in bathroom staff very accommodating would go again
Review 99:If you are at the front of the Hotel it can be very noisy because of the busy A66, so book a room at the back.
Review 100:The Hotel and its gardens, the staff were very helpful, food excellent, I will book a short break there again, there are lots of interesting places to visit,
Review 101:This was an absolutely beautiful hotel, and was value for Money. The room was exquisite with a wonderful view of the castle and grounds. Would highly recommend.
Review 102:We stayed in easily accessible spacious garden rooms next to each other, perfect for us as we were travelling with a elderly family member. Lovely gardens, good bar meals, friendly and efficient staff. Also accepted our small dog. All good!
Review 103:No hot water for a bath in the evening. New light bulbs needed in bedroom. Too many stairs and no help with luggage
Review 104:breakfast very good and staff very pleasant. Situation and appearance of hotel Decor lovely
Review 105:TV in room - the furniture had obviously been moved and the TV had not so unable to see TV from bed.
Review 106:Restaurant was excellent - fantastic atmosphere and excellent food
Review 107:Dirty marks on the wall like make up dragged down. Iron mark on the carpet. Sheets smelling as if they had been dryied in a fryer. Customer service on arrival was not up to much fairly stern and unwelcoming from a small dark haired man.
Review 108:The garden is lovely and peaceful. The breakfast is excellent and the staff in the breakfast room are great.
Review 109:Room on the road, however, traffic was not too busy
Review 110:Welcoming and helpful staff despite very late arrival; kitchen was closed but we could still get some nice sandwiches and a drink. Nice building located in a rural setting. Our stay was very brief but the place looked quite nice.
Review 111:Didn't like that you had to pay as a staying guest to use the garage spa facilities also mentioned it was a special occasion and didn't receive anything.
Review 112:The afternoon tea was beautiful and the staff were all lovely.
Review 113:Rooms were overpriced and very dated and tired.Bathroom needed upgrading.
Review 114:This hotel is in a delightful location,The staff are lovely and extremely helpful and there is a lovely cosy feel. Excellent breakfast.I was there for a wedding held at the hotel and it is the perfect venue.
Review 115:to much noise small rooms for the price very small menu expensive food not value for money does need upgrading in some areas
Review 116:the setting the old world charm the staff
Review 117:Meal sizes were very mean. You will leave the restaurant hungry. This would be the reason we would not stop there again.
Review 118:The room was clean and comfortable and despite being near the busy A66 was very quiet.Restaurant food was very well prepared and tasty. The hotel was an ideal stop over on our way to Scotland (travelling by motorcycle)
Review 119:No slip mat in bath..... Noisy road when bedroom windows open (can't be helped I suppose)
Review 120:Lovely helpful staff. Good food and value in resturant. Access to Spa with good facilities Comfortable bed
Review 121:We booked a platinum room but then when the receptionist found we had a dog with us, we were told we couldn't stay in the hotel, but we could have another room. It was a tiny dark room, up a side street. So the dog had to stay in the car. Morritt, why do you give poorer rooms to dog owners?
Review 122:Our room, the bar, the bar snacks, the lounge, the breakfast.
Review 123:Wifi beyond poor, thought the room was too highly priced was what was on offer in terms of the facilities of the hotel and the room
Review 124:Food was excellent for a wedding, room was comfortable and extensive toiletries in the room were a nice touch
Review 125:Our stay wasn't long enough
Review 126:The first thing we noticed was the beautiful area and the building itself, inside was just as good, it was charming. The staff were so pleasant and during our stay they were all polite but most of all they smiled and went out of there way to help. We had dinner and breakfast, both meals were good and our room superb. I don't understand why people put negative comments on we couldn't find anything wrong at all. Would love to stay again and would certainly recommend.
Review 127:Here is a list of things I didn’t like at The Morritt: • Being charged 5* prices for a hotel that is 3* at best(despite its accreditation). • Very dated rooms (cheap Argos-style pictures, pine furniture, cheap plastic kettle, cheap TV with only freeview). • Clear windows in the bathroom. Everyone can see what you’re doing, so you have to close the curtains everytime you use it. • Rules everywhere. Don’t do this, don’t do that, pay for breakages, don’t steal the iron, don’t steal mugs, don’t steal shampoo and shower gel. • Very poor wifi connection everywhere, despite this being a selling point on booking.com. • Being overcharged to use the spa. • Rude operations manager telling my partner off for smoking on the road outside of the hotel. A public road that the hotel does not own. • Being told off by a rude female duty manager for arriving late for breakfast. One minute late. The same duty manager was thoroughly miserable throughout our whole stay and clear hates her job (and her guests) and needs to look up “hospitality” in the dictionary.
Review 128:The spa.
Review 129:Mobile reception limited to the bridge about 200 yards away. Not great if its raining.
Review 130:comfortable room, good food, friendly staff in a nice setting and a reasonable price - what more could you want?
Review 131:Room to small for the money paid, sink in bathroom smashed and stuck back together, shower unit dated and worn, breakfast poor and reception staff could be more pleasant, toilets in bar area dated.
Review 132:The wifi seemed to limited to near the reception area. We couldn't pick up the wifi at all in our room for the duration of our stay.
Review 133:Comfortable room and excellent breakfast with plenty of variety. Great gardens and surroundings.
Review 134:Lovely old Country house hotel, great walk from the door along the river, fabulous Bowes Hotel to visit close by.
Review 135:Bedroom was very small No lift and several Flights of stairs to room
Review 136:But overall a lovely hotel good ambience Lots of original features quirky
Review 137:Poor shower in evening
