Reviews for Ackergill Tower Castle

Review 1:No bad experience. The only thing was the kitchen area was very cold, but think that may of been us as the radiator was not very warm. Coming home :-( didn't want to leave!

Review 2:We stayed in the treetop apartment and it was spectacular. Wow impact on arrival. Every door lead to another spectacular room. The decor was very stylish and everything just looked amazing. Would definitely recommend. Unfortunately we were only there for 1 night and had traveled from just outside London, so didn't really have enough to to look around the town, which was a real shame. Would definitely come back though, just with a few more days to spare!

Review 3:We loved the location - right on the North Sea. The castle was lovely with lots of rooms steeped in history from yesteryear. Staff were excellent and the dinner was delicious.

Review 4:Great location and presence, first class accomodation and food, friendly helpful staff. We were a November short stay and at the winter rate this is a gem. Special mention to the young man who welcomed us and ensured we enjoyed our meal and stay

Review 5:The only down side is the stairs. If you are allocated a room in the tower be prepared for a hike.

Review 6:The castle was amazing, the room very comfortable & breakfast was great.

Review 7:Travelers should note that the building has no lifts but the location and the facilities make up for it.

Review 8:A truly excellent travel experience. Fabulous facilities in a unique setting. The staff were efficient. A magnificent old building.

Review 9:loved the overall presentation. the beautiful rooms. it was like staying in a castle that you would usually only be able to look and not touch when you visit historical places. staff very helpful. unique experience. would highly recomend.

Review 10:N/A.

Review 11:Fabulous, welcoming staff. We had a really upbeat tour guide...the castle and grounds are amazing! Lots of history and wonderful views...we even had a great view of the North sea from our luxurious room! Good food, wine by the fire and plenty of activities on offer. Sumptuous furnishings throughout keeping in line with a traditional castle feel. Just magical.

Review 12:Disappointing breakfast - ran out of bacon and low quality sausages/mushrooms - seemed to be economy breakfast ingredients in an expensive hotel. The dinner we had there was very good.

Review 13:The amazing and unique building - and being invited to enjoy and explore it by the staff. Multiple lounges, snooker table and roof top view.

Review 14:The food was not up to the standard you would expect for such a plush place. Two chefs had different ways of cooking the same meal which I found strange. Also had a very limited menu.

Review 15:The friendliness and the location were fantastic. Rural peace and quiet.

Review 16:No complaints other than there is not all that much to do in the area

Review 17:The rooms were absolutely stunning the staff were fantastically helpful and the food was great we had an absolutely amazing time there!!!

Review 18:Everything! Everything! It was stunning! Taking a step back in time in glorious luxury! Fabulous huge room with the sea below the window.Family books, Dunbar sea chests at the foot of the bed, family photos everywhere...it was so personal and touching to be part of it's history....and the battlements! Wow! The very best of our 10 day tour of wonderful Scotland.

Review 19:There was a box of bugs in our room which would have been fine but they had crumbled to dust. Also nothing is open on a week day.

Review 20:The house was amazing lots of interesting things to look at and the location was beautiful

Review 21:Not your fault, but the post code went into our sat nav but didn't take us to Ackergill Tower.

Review 22:Fantastic building & location. Lovely room, great bath and bed (we'd been staying in a camper van for three weeks, so the comfort and facilities were especially appreciated.) Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 23:Internet needs to updated. I had to in or near reception office to get it

Review 24:Outstanding place to get away or just see the sites. Great staff. Beauitful grounds

Review 25:Wifi a little temperamental but it's a 16th century castle with incredible thick walls!

Review 26:Absolutely wonderful! Meals were superb, bedrooms excellent and fantastic location

Review 27:That it was totally different - felt like we were in some fairy tale! Rooms lovely and the meal was excellent - we enjoyed wandering around. A really romantic treat and a birthday treat for my husband.

Review 28:Nil.

Review 29:Fantastic castle right on the coast. Wonderfully kept, beautiful property and the staff are extremely professional, courteous, attentive and friendly. All the staff we met should be highly commended. Dinner in the evening, taken in the main hall was fantastic and added a very nice elegant touch to our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would love to return for longer next time. The rooms themselves are tastefully laid out in keeping with the setting and are very comfortable. We had two weeks travelling around the whole of Scotland and this was head and shoulders above all of the other hotels we stayed at. 10 out of 10.

Review 30:Ended up on 4th floor up the very very small steps. Which we had no notice of prior to arrival. Couldn't take up any luggage and they felt treacherous each time we used. When asked if we could be on a lower floor, manager first said they were all booked, then said "well you could upgrade for an additional charge". Felt rather cheeky.

Review 31:Great location and beautiful rooms. Was a majestic spot and you feel like royalty entering the property and house.

Review 32:As like most places - no lift. Dinner at the castle was a bit pricey - but it was easy enough to drive to Wick (recommend booking a restaurant in advance). Wifi signal not the best.

Review 33:Room upgraded, helpful staff, lovely bath with bathrobes and bubbles, very comfortable bed and well decorated room (we stayed in the Blue Room), gorgeous communal areas, delicious breakfast, lovely to hear the sea through our window in the morning.

Review 34:We didn't like that we hadn't booked for 2 nights lol!

Review 35:One word.....WOW....it was our friend's silver wedding, they didn't disappoint, it just wasn't for long enough!

Review 36:Not immediately obvious what activities were available at the hotel for individual travellers.

Review 37:Stunning property. Beautiful furnishings & décor in bedroom/bathroom

Review 38:Large deception. The room was in a 5th floor, without elevator, and last two floors through a narrow spiral staircase, not so charming as you may think (made of concrete), incredibly, the personnel did not help with the bagagge... The room keys were lost and finally we were given a "master" key (so we could enter other room!?). At 11pm an strong noise from the roof (just in top of the room) disturbed us for 20 minutes, apparently linked to some water circuit. No explanation was offered.Wifi simply did not work, and no bikes were offered, although we requested when we made the reservation. All in all, although the castle is nice, this was not a 5* or even a 4* service. And yes, the room is not like the picture showed (it was much smaller). In fact we got a mail (while travelling) offering a better room (more similar to the one seen when reserving) for an extra charge...

Review 39:Wick offers a nice natural but remote environment. Access to Wick takes very long time through old roads (Scotland infrastructures are quite poor) La costa de Wick ofrece un entorno natural muy bello aunque remoto. Acceder a Wick es muy complicado y lleva muchas horas de conduccion por carreteras de segunda division.

Review 40:Didn't clean the room properly on a Sunday didn't replace all the used items in the room. Not enough staff, no manned reception have to book everything in advance. Local area not many places to eat.

Review 41:staff very friendly and helpful when available. beautiful area and hotel setting.

Review 42:We arrived after the hotel's meal time, and the manager/duty manager who welcomed us offered no solution at all to our hunger - it was basically our misfortune. Advised that there was no dress code for breakfast (dressing gowns would be fine) and yet when we arrived for breakfast in dressing gowns, the same manager / duty manager sent us away to pout clothes on - very embarrasing :( Also found I was charge for 4 evening meals when only two were taken, when we manage to be around during the evening meal time. There was no internet in the room. Future guest should be aware that Ackergill is a tower, there is no lift and all rooms are least 2 floors up from ground level. Wheelchair bound / partially mobile folk should look elsewhere, unfortunately.

Review 43:All staff, with the exception of the manager / duty manager who welcomed us, were excellent and very friendly and accommodating. Scenery and outlook from the room was stunning.

Review 44:The atmosphere was magical and the elegance of the place was stunning. The staff very friendly and professional. The rooms very refined. The drawing room where you can sip a cup of tea or drink a dram of whisky in front of a warm fireplace surrounded by precious ancient furniture and chinaware is marvellous. The view from any window on the ocean is amazing. The food superb. Unfortunately we stayed there too little...

Review 45:We had very unstable wifi because we stayed at the highest level. The router was at the level below us but due to the thick old castle flooring we had poor wifi.

Review 46:Location and the castle itself. Very friendly personell

Review 47:No orange juice at breakfast; no choice for evening meal; evening meal very expensive for what it was; breakfast waiter off hand; property is in need of maintenance, due to ill-fitting doors and windows; carpets are not flat; no lift to the third floor; television only has 9 channels, not one of which is BBC; no radio in the room; dining room shutters closed at dinner time on a beautiful summer evening; front door very difficult to open, as it was on our previous visit

Review 48:Good location and great scenery

Review 49:The noise level in our room was ridiculously loud one night due to a wedding. We felt we should have been informed of this event in advance but were not. Room service was very late in the day - 5.00pm and very poor.

Review 50:The castle was stunning and the views spectacular. The dining experience was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly.

Review 51:If you have a bad experience staying here, you need to examine your own outlook on life. Something is wrong with you.

Review 52:All the homely aspects. There are original newspapers dating from the 1920's in the drawing room. I also lived the folklore about the house. The staff could not do more to welcome you and make your stay special. Special acclaim goes to Jackie, Karen and Steven.

Review 53:The whole experience was great from our evening cocktails sitting by a cozy fire in the reading room to a fabulous 4 course meal in the grand ballroom. The staff was extremely attentive. Karen even took the time to give us a tour of the castle and a little history behind. A truly wonderful experience

Review 54:The nearest town, Wick, is clearly not one of the nicest in UK. Nothing to do and to see.

Review 55:During our 10 days in Wales and Scotland, this was the best place we stayed at and we saw quite good ones. Rooms are superb, staff was very friendly, we felt more at a fiend's place than in a hotel, food was excellent, we were sad to leave and since then, we are looking forward to coming again.

Review 56:My stay was too short!

Review 57:Staff spotted that I was a bit lame and moved me to a superior room on a lower floor without being asked and at no extra cost. Food & service was excellent. Extremely comfortable bed.

Review 58:Limited bar no lagers other than foreign unknown no drambuie which Must be some kind off Scottish sin

Review 59:Was a genuine castle with all the atmosphere,. Obviously owners had gone to a great deal of expenses to do this Dinner was great but a little overpriced

Review 60:No lifts.

Review 61:Positioned on the coast the tower stands out starkly. Grounds are beautiful. We sat at breakfast watching sheep fed as we fed. Room was large with good view and staff helpful

Review 62:The positives far outweigh any negatives. The shower was small but had decent water pressure. The wifi was only available in common rooms but was free.

Review 63:The whole ambiance was incredibly magical! The view as you drive up to the castle, watching the sunrise on the sea from your cozy room, watching the extra adorable large rabbits play chase on the lawn and having the jazz music play as we ate our gourmet meal in the majestic dining room. My. Husband and I absolutely Loved this hotel! This is one place to put on your hotel bucket list. It's somewhat isolated however that is what added to the romance: the beautiful serene nature walks, the sea, a chance to recoup, meditate, refocus and energize. The town and airport of Wick are only 20 minutes or so away but you feel like you are centuries away from civilization. The plush canopy bed not only looked comfortable but was luxuriously magnificent to sleep on! The decor was elegant with a fireplace. The room spacious with fantastic views of the sea. The bathroom has both a separate deep tub and shower. The wifi was free but only available in the common rooms. This would be the perfect location to have a wedding, holiday party, or any occasion.

Review 64:The price! At £350 for the cheapest room and £55 per person for dinner! However it does mean that it is almost empty in peak season and so you have the place to yourself which is great.

Review 65:It was like staying in your own stately home. With four sitting rooms to choose from all with big open fires and sink into sofas. Great welcome by friendly manager and service from unobtrusive staff. Fab four poster and great cooked breakfast!stunning sea views.

Review 66:The breakfasts were always good, although paying as an extra?

Review 67:The service was excellent, nothing too much. The place was just so very different, almost night at the museum for real.

Review 68:The evening meal was a set menu which we happened to enjoy thoroughly, however, I would check the menu in future when booking to ensure that the food is to our taste.

Review 69:Setting, atmosphere, room size and comfort. Restaurant was very good both for breakfast and evening meal. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 70:W-fi available only in public rooms

Review 71:Unique,peaceful and historical lodging with courteous, efficient and knowledgable staff. Views and grounds to be enjoyed by all. If you are interested in history you can spend hours reading letters and diaris by and about former owners (Ackergill was started in the 15th century). If you prefer hill walking and wildlife it is available only a short distance away. We had a delightful stay!!!

Review 72:Location, remote but that's what we wanted

Review 73:The breakfast could offer more choice without too much trouble

Review 74:Lounge . . . . and especially the large Christmas tree

Review 75:Great location, staff, and atmosphere

Review 76:There was no atmosphere, fires being on would have helped greatly, windows in room although lovely was covered in flies.

Review 80:The staff were very attentive and helpful.

Review 81:Stunning location, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, great food. Beautiful property and wonderfully restored.

Review 82:Nothing

Review 83:Accommodation and meals

Review 84:Staff were not attentive. Dinner was OK and breakfast was average.

Review 85:Historic venue.

Review 86:The climb to my room on the third floor.

Review 87:Just about everything about the place.

Review 88:Ignore the SatNav/Postcode, look for the signs on the main road

Review 89:The staff could not do enough for us. Fantastic evening Meal

Review 115:Everything-it was idyllic! Steeped in history, a beautiful property. Staff were friendly and very helpful. A rare and great find!

Review 116:Not much to dislike here other than the journey to get there.

Review 117:The location, the castle, the rooms, and the staff. A magical place for a holiday break.

Review 118:99% !

Review 119:Because of the setting and relative remoteness prices have to be high.

Review 120:Hotel and food were very good.

Review 121:Loved that this hotel had personality and homely charm whilst still retaining top quality 5* service. Will stay again!

Review 122:Service can be improved a little.

Review 123:It is a historic building. The price worth it.

Review 124:The only thing we didn't like was that we couldn't stay longer! - next time.

Review 125:Very nice people that work at the castle. They were very accommodating. The ambiance, the coziness, we just felt at home - so comfortable. Loved it.

Review 126:The location is excellent with beautiful views. Very peaceful and super comfortable. Amazing antiques in every room! Staff super friendly - a thoroughly enjoyable stay for a business trip. Would go back for leisure.

Review 127:The overnight is not cheap, but worth the money, however to pay extra for the warm breakfast I found a little awkward.

Review 128:The pace is like museum! Very relaxed atmosphere! We have stayed in a lot of castle hotels before, and I would say Ackergill Tower is really one of the top places! Staff gives you so much freedom and space, you can just go and explore everything yourself. I think they are very good organised when it comes to events and weddings! Whatever little tiny issues you might have, I am sure that location and place just makes up for it! Indeed a highly recommended place.
