Reviews for County Hotel

Review 1:Not applicable!

Review 2:Excellent spacious, clean and warm room. Excellent communication with hosts before arrival. Would recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Review 3:Nil.

Review 4:It was a lovely big room with 2 king beds and a sitting area. Very comfortable and quiet as at the back of the hotel. Great to have parking at the rear as in the heart of Selkirk.

Review 5:The hotel is a bit over priced for the quality of the rooms. The window had been left open making the room cold and it took until the next day for it to be a comfortable temperature , the windows were traditional and not double glazed. The meals were grid but again over priced.

Review 6:The location of the hotel was within the town, making it easy to find and close to amenities

Review 7:Only two things there was no landline in my room as it is says , I asked to use their landline as there is no phone signal there on mobile And no dressing gown in my room as stated .

Review 8:Friendly staff. Good selection on menu and food was delicious and well presented

Review 9:I had delicious fish and chips for dinner , unfortunately my wife had a very poor lasagna which appeared to be reheated in a microwave and the pasta turned to mush

Review 10:Staff were great and attentive Breakfasts were very good Bar area comfortable

Review 11:Nothing bad but rooms are noisy at times during the night as they look out onto the High Street.

Review 12:Friendly owners and staff. Excellent breakfast and nice dinner. Comfortable room.

Review 13:Received a pleasant welcome upon arrival and was very comfortable in my room. En-suite appeared to have been newly fitted and the shower was excellent. The scrambled egg and bacon I had for breakfast was some of the nicest I've had for ages and made me wish I'd eaten in the hotel restaurant the previous evening.

Review 14:Bathroom was small, rundown and didn't have a warm welcoming feel like the rest of the establishment.

Review 15:Staff very friendly and room was well presented, clean and tidy. Restaurant was lovely for evening meal

Review 16:We thought that the mattress on the bed was not very comfortable. One bright lamp in the room would have made reading so much easier

Review 17:Staff were helpful

Review 18:Refurbishment taking place in next door room until 8pm then again at 7.45am next morning. Great for the business, but let people know whilst booking or before booking not on arrival. Or close off rooms near works to minimise noise.

Review 19:Close to centre

Review 20:Was glad I upgraded as I had a newly furnished room with excellent en suite facilities. Had an evening meal in lounge which was superb and breakfast was beautifully presented

Review 21:Landlords Will and Tron run a hotel that has long been my favourite in the Borders. Steeped in History the County has everything a traveller could ask for. I've stayed many times over the years and it just keeps getting better and better. Fantastic food and clean comfort all under one roof. Highly recommended.

Review 22:Staff very friendly, looked after us, moved me toa lower floor as i hurt my legvwhich was very appreciated, best scrambled egg and smoked salmon ive had in ages

Review 23:Generously sized room with plenty of seating, tea / coffee tray with biscuits, and modern bathroom with a big walk-in shower. Breakfast was freshly cooked with good quality ingredients.

Review 24:We had a lovely spacious room with two double beds which were extremely comfortable. Room was warm, clean and very quiet. We didn't stay for breakfast so can't comment on that!

Review 25:The interior decor was tired and requires a makeover. In particular the design of the restaurant was rather odd with a wholly redundant water feature in a prominent place.

Review 26:The quality of the room was fine; the food and the service were excellent. Overall the hotel represented really good value for money.

Review 27:From the rear car park the hotel does not look too inviting in terms of decor etc but it is going through a large renovation. The inside however is outstanding, clean, modern and the staff were friendly, very efficient and although there was a problem with my room due to renovation works elsewhere they were soon sorted. The bar, service and food were excellent certainly a place to re-visit and recommend to others.

Review 28:As it is right on the high street, noisy. Lots of traffic through the town

Review 29:Right in the centre of Selkirk. Lovely room, right at the front, recently decorated

Review 30:Some rooms are a little dated & public area toilets could do with an up-date. In all fairness though, there is a program of up-dates on-going. Two rooms were being refurbished during my visit.

Review 31:Friendly, helpful staff, good food & clean. Very enjoyable stay.

Review 32:Staff were great; flexible, cheerful & accommodating. Fabulous food, great menu for all meals! Recommend the restaurant even if you are not staying there.

Review 33:Excellent friendly service. The food was very good,we both had steak for dinner which was cooked as we had ordered it. Breakfast was excellent with 5 star scrambled egg.

Review 34:The room in general was in poor condition and in need of a major upgrade. The ensuite was too small and the bottom of shower had mould. the bed was on a lean and you rolled to the edge when tring to sleep - terrible

Review 35:Friendly staff, great restaurant and breakfast

Review 36:Well located and everyone we met in the hotel was very friendly. Food good both evening and breakfast. Room superb with twin double beds and sitting area. Ideal as we had a dog with us that couldn't go in the bar or restaurant. Wifi okay and free off road parking.

Review 37:The staff were all great and the food was surprisingly good for a small hotel in a rural town. The hotel has its own car-park to the rear which is always a great help when touring.

Review 38:Everything staff were really friendly and the food was out of this world. I've booked in again for two night in a weeks time. Worth every penny and I would highly recommended anyone who is thinking of staying.

Review 39:Old fashioned room which needed double glazing because of early morning traffic. Black mold in the shower.

Review 40:Good food and friendly staff. Breakfast was very good. Evening menu included traditional Scottish food.

Review 41:It would be even better if there was a direct entrance from the carpark behind the hotel.

Review 42:Excellent room space and facilities; great food and astonishingly good wine that was also sensibly priced; very professional and committed staff.

Review 43:My friend an I arrived we had booked a twin room an we got a double room an they had put a sofa bed for the second bed it was really uncomfortable and my friend didn't get much sleep

Review 44:The shower

Review 45:Booked a table for an evening meal on the second night of stay. No record of it the following day. Communication breakdown perhaps?

Review 46:The food was excellent; far better than expected. The hotel was quiet, even with a private function on the second night. Good base to explore the area.

Review 47:They'd just run out of real ale:-(

Review 48:Right in the town centre so very convenient and also has its own car park. I had an 'executive' room which was really spacious and modern with a large walk-in shower. Good bar and food and nice breakfast. I'd definitely stay again.

Review 49:Stair and landing carpet was extremely dirty. Extractor fan outside room was really noisy. Toilet seat and toilet roll holder wasn't fixed properly. Ragged patching of carpet in room. Dodged plug socket next to dressing table. Stained pillow slip. Run down parking area like a building site.On departing the man just took our key and never asked if everything was alright. Very poor value for money.

Review 50:Lovely comfy bed. Nice shower

Review 51:My room was above the main entrance so was a bit noisy at closing time. It would have been quieter at the back of the hotel.

Review 52:The food in the restaurant was very good, I had the tomato soup (not tinned) and the sirloin steak which was beautiful.

Review 53:Couldn't add dinner to the final bill. Had to pay separately

Review 54:Very comfortable and clean. Nice welcome. Evening meal was home-made and nicely cooked.

Review 55:Single bed though accept I did book a single room but been long time since I slept in a single bed.

Review 56:Friendly and very helpful staff. Private parking was a great bonus and good wifi

Review 57:Just an overnight stay. Good to walk around town, hosts were nice, staff was friendly (even came out to the car and hauled in luggage, only place in 3 weeks that did that), food was excellent! Room was clean.

Review 58:the shower was good but us weary walkers would ideally like a bath to recover in, i appreciate it's all down to size in en suites.

Review 59:perfect location, very friendly lady who checked us in and later served us dinner, she was so friendly and chatty, made us feel so welcome, lovely big comfortable room, lovely food

Review 60:Hotel a bit tired, we had a very large room -great but a small shower room - not so great

Review 61:The food, the food , the food!! Extremely surprised by the quality of the food served from homebaked bread to strawberry tarts to delicious main meals. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Review 62:The breakfast was very tasty but the full english was quite small. Ok for me but the guy we were with said it didnt touch the sides. It was included in our room but £10 if it wasn't and i would have been disappointed if i'd of paid.

Review 63:Staff were so accommodating and made sure we were well looked after. Even made us a packed lunch as we were travelling on business. Very friendly place. Dinner was lovely and the bar area was lovely to sit and have a quiet drink.

Review 64:We had a meal on DSunday afternoon and received excellant service. However 6 people arrived while we were eating. Three adults and three children. They all knew each other. One party had booked a table[the restaurant was empty] the other adult and child who had not booked were not received very pleasantly. It was suggested they move into the lounge to eat. They were finally allowed to sit at a table for 2 apart from their friends. The group who had booked were very unhappy with the reception and decided to leave without eating. The sad thing was these people were local but I suspect will be unlikely to visit again. A great pity

Review 65:Staff Kelly was very welcoming. The room although small was very comfortable. Breakfast was great with very pleasant service

Review 66:The location was great. We were meeting friends and it was close to their studio and home. The restaurant and lounge area was a great place for meeting our friends, having a drink and a meal in a casual and friendly place.

Review 67:The bed had hairs on it when we arrived so we (very nicely) asked to have new bedding. The manager (named Will) was very rude, explained how what company the laundry comes from and when my mother suggested that perhaps the bedding was not changed, he sternly offered to show us out of the hotel if we're not happy! This was at 11.30 at night (we arrived late) with my 9 month old son who we were in the middle of changing otherwise we would have left providing we got our money back. He eventually offered new bedding after an argument. Breakfast was overpriced.

Review 68:My family and I have stayed here before and had an enjoyable time so decided to stay again. The room was clean, lovely decor and the reception staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 69:Not sure if they had ground floor rooms but no lift for disabled access. Breakfast was separate and quite pricey so we decided to eat out after check out.

Review 70:Stayed in the King Executive which was comfortable and very clean. Good toiletries and plenty of tea/coffee. Nice touch with bathrobe for each guest. The staff were very nice and friendly.

Review 71:This hotel has potential but needs painting and updating. It was also a not as clean as most of the hotels we have stayed at in Scotland. The food was not great either.

Review 72:This is a good location to see all of the sights in the area.

Review 73:The room wasn't very warm, and the heaters couldn't be turned on.

Review 74:Hotel is located in the centre of Selkirk, with private parking area. I was welcomed very friendly by the staff, and was shown personally to my room. The room had a great bed, view over the main street (but no traffic noise!) and spacious bathroom. Breakfast was fine for the price - nothing special. Room was quiet and cosy - shower was nice and hot.

Review 75:We have unofficially adopted The County as our 'Home from Home', for whenever we return to my home town. The staff are always helpful and the rooms clean and spacious. The food is very good, and sourced locally.

Review 76:There is nothing about this facility that we did not like.

Review 77:The location is excellent, the food was fabulous, and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. We are Canadian, and we readily found a listening ear (or two) when we had questions about our stay and/or the vicinity.

Review 78:WiFi service not good.

Review 79:The owner are very friendly and are hands on all the time. I like that they have a restaurant and a causal sitting area to have coffee and snack anytime. Great menu and very friendly staff. Highly recommend this hotel!

Review 80:Our room although very clean was a little tired, the shower was a trickle and no double glazing so had road noise. Also didn't like background music in lounge area. Menu was a little "pub grub" to us so went somewhere else to eat.

Review 81:The staff were very efficient, not sure if the guy who checked us in was the owner or not but he was fantastic !!, bed was comfortable, really lovely breakfast. Would stay again but maybe upgrade our room.

Review 82:Nothing

Review 83:Booked a one night stay as we were there for a sporting event in Galsheils, location on the high street was good with a small car park behind. We got a free upgrade when we checked in,room was modern and well equipped new refurbished bathroom staff were very helpful getting a taxi booked for us and the bar staff were attentive. Breakfast was lovely couldn't daily anything would stay again when in the area

Review 84:Decor in bedroom somewhat dated in style but very tidy, clean and we'll maintained. Just a personal preference. Wouldn't put me off coming again and highly recommending it.

Review 85:Service was excellent. Food was beautiful. Beds very comfy had a great sleep

Review 86:Staff spread very thinly, one hard working member seemed to be doing most of the work. We had the evening meal which was only very average pub grub.

Review 87:Clean Room Friendly Staff

Review 88:Fabulous food- particularly the Norwegian menu which was delicious and great value for money. Room was also excellent value for money and staff were very helpful. We had a lovely trip.

Review 89:There was nothing really that we did not like apart from my son and his girlfriend got a bigger room.....lol

Review 90:The food was excellent. The executive rooms were well presented, very clean and comfortable. The bathroom was contemporary, spacious and well set out. I have never stayed in a hotel in Selkirk before as I usually stay with family but if for any reason I have to have another hotel stay, I will most deffinately visit the County again.

Review 91:Centre of Selkirk but the traffic noise was hardly noticeable.

Review 92:Delicious food, well sourced, we liked the wine. Attentive staff who sorted out minor problems immediately. In the centre of Selkirk with a carpark, thus very convenient. Wonderful location in the south of Scotland, v.g. for hikes, gardens and places to visit.

Review 93:No shampoo provided. Had to go out to buy some Hotel is really in need of a makeover. Chipped paint, artexed walls and badly stained carpet in bedroom takes away from a comfortable hotel

Review 94:Location on high street. Good food. Comfortable bed additional touches such as robe, tea, coffee, biscuits and water provided. Very helpful and friendly bar staff

Review 95:Nothing. It looks shabby from the outside but the inside is a different matter.

Review 96:The resturant food is sensational - the best we have had the entire trip. The staff are fantastic and are the most professional and friendly we have met. Even if you don't stay here at least try the resturant out.

Review 97:Exterior paintwork at odds with the interior and the general look of the car park and it's entrance from the road need significant improvement. Toilet bowl was not securely fastened to the floor in our room.

Review 98:My headline says it all. Internally the premises were clean, organised and allowing for the fact it is a period property, well laid out. Bathroom was modern with large shower. Little touches like bathrobes, sewing kit etc, in addition to the usual tea and coffee facility added to the good impression.

Review 99:The decor in the bedroom was in need of updating, but it was clean and comfortable.

Review 100:We had dinner in the lounge and the food was excellent and breakfast was also very good. The food was very well presented and local produce was well promoted and readily available. The staff were very friendly.

Review 101:No parking when I arrived due to ongoing function. After 40mile drive not good. No toilet brush.

Review 102:Friendly and helpful staff, food in the Willow restaurant was excellent .

Review 103:Nothing of note

Review 104:Relaxed atmosphere, helpful & attentive staff, fabulous food , comfortable rooms and excellent location for a base in the Borders for a long week-end break.

Review 105:This is an older motel. The stairs are steep and narrow, so just be prepared.

Review 106:The hotel is located in the center of town and was relatively easy to find. Check in was quick and easy. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was very good. The price was not out of line.

Review 107:Even if it really wasn't the cheapest hotel we've ever been, the breakfast wasn't included, unless paying 10 extra pounds for each guest! In our opinion, that's a little bit expensive for a normal continental breakfast!

Review 108:The hotel is clean, the room was very nice and big, with any comfort (towels, soap, shampoo, phon, tea set with also chocolate and coffee) and there is a free car parking near the hotel. The staff was kind and friendly.

Review 109:Only minor niggle is that seats in lounge bar although comfy were slightly low for the height of the table when eating there.

Review 110:Staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. Food was good quality and reasonable price. Thoughtful toiches throughout. Have stayed before and will stay again when in the area.

Review 111:Warm welcome when we arrived, meals available even though we were late arriving. Nice and quiet overnight. Centre of the town easy to park and nice walk around the town and through the gardens.

Review 112:the county is an excellent base to visit other parts of Scotland. The staff"kelly" in the bar and"nicky" in the attached la contea were very helpful and welcoming.the room was very clean and comfortable.the breakfast were excellent and we will definitely go back sometime next year.

Review 113:Location of bedrooms. We were on the third floor Seemed to be a lack of staff making the service slow

Review 114:Location Lounge and dining rooms well presented Food verygood

Review 115:No lift Selkirk on a rainy Sunday is not great!

Review 116:The food was excellent Room very big with huge beds good shower room Room provisions very good Easy car parking Very friendly & helpful staff

Review 117:Street/traffic noise as at front and not double-glazed, so perhaps a back room would be better?

Review 118:Lovely room, good breakfast and lovely Italian meal in the restaurant. Staff, very friendly and helpful.

Review 119:The room we were in was a little tired. The size was fine so a little attention like the downstairs part would bring it up to par.

Review 120:The quality of food at breakfast was really good.

Review 121:The place is oozing history, and full of interesting features. Twisting staircases and attic windows. Lovely friendly staff who are interested in people and in the old building.

Review 122:Two flights of steep stairs to get to the bedroom as I cannot walk very well Tiny bathroom

Review 123:Helpful and friendly staff Good breakfast quiet and central location comfortable lounge large TV in room

Review 124:Warm welcome from welcome & courteous staff. Located right in the centre of Selkirk, with a small car park at the rear of the hotel. Good food & clean bedrooms.

Review 125:Stairs.

Review 126:Central position in the town, near bus terminus, shops & my Granddaughter. Good food, well presented, excellent menu. Helpful, courteous staff.

Review 127:I always enjoy my stays at the County in Selkirk, my favourite borders town. The food, service and accommodation are always top notch and owners Will and Tron go out of their way to make one's stay a memorable experience. I would highly recommend the County to anyone travelling in the borders.

Review 128:Town had little going on, but that was no fault of the hotel. We knew we would be staying in a small town.

Review 129:We were looking to enjoy local food and drink, vacationing from Texas. We have been eating at local pubs for most towns we stayed in. We figured we would have breakfast at the county, so we set off to ask the locals where to eat dinner. Everyone recommended the county restaurant. The food was some of the best we had all trip. They have a nice garden to dine in as well. The service with dinner was also better than nearly every other restaurant we visited.

The Fine Print
