Reviews for Castle Hotel

Review 1:Where to start...The telly didn't work, the light switch above the bed was loose in the wall, the double socket by the kettle was loose, the radiator didn't work and needed bleeding, once done it only worked partially, the floor was laminate and the bed had wheels...You can guess the result, if I was 5 I probably would've enjoyed scooting across the room every time I rolled over...The bathroom light stopped working, the cupboards bed and bedside table were the sort of MDF rejects that most folk dumped back in the 70's...In the morning the only staff memeber on the desk when I came down was outside the front door, smoking, she then served me breakfast...It's a dump, please, do yourself a favour and spend your money anywhere else but here.

Review 2:Nothing, nothing at all.

Review 3:Being told could only choose 5 items for breakfast. Freezing cold room and had to ask 4 times for it to be turned on which was done at 6 30 pm. Reception often unmanned. No hairdryer in room as stated. Poor condition in rooms condensation dripping on window. Very dated. I asked for a refund for breakfast for the 12th January as they had already taken it before I ate it. You kindly contacted them on the 11th January and amended the booking but I haven't received the refund yet

Review 4:Curtains hanging down, half of the blind slats were missing. No plug for bathroom sink, plug in bath was far too small for hole so practically useless. Could plug kettle in due to plug socket location. Didn't even attempt breakfast.

Review 5:Comfortable Bed

Review 6:The shower in our room was faulty so we could take only bath. However, our mother stayed in the next room, everything was working there.

Review 7:Quite specious rooms, comfortable bed, great location! Fairly good dinner in a restaurant downstairs and welcoming staff.

Review 8:The shower was terrible, it took ages to get warm then it was incredibly hot. The water poured out weak and the taps on the sink were loose.

Review 9:The bed was conformable and the room had a good sized television.

Review 10:Noise from other room coming from vent very dusty vent in bathroom and cobwebs. Condensation on Windows. The heating is on a timer!! Not controlled from the room. When it came on it clunker noisily into action waking me up. Careless with personal details.

Review 11:Convenience. Simple but well prepared food.

Review 12:Room was on second floor but smelt and very dated and grotty, complained to reception and they found us a better room on 4th floor which was a family room. Needs a bit of tlc but we did like the vintage/ retro original feel!

Review 13:Great location in the centre of town. Best comfortable bed that ive slept in for a long time ?

Review 14:The radiators in the room were very hot and it was not possible to turn them off. The room became very warm and not comfortable to sleep. Windows could not be opened as they had been tied up with wire! The hotel was a "bit chipped around the edges" but adequate.

Review 15:Friendly staff and a good breakfast.

Review 16:The rooms were rather warm, although a fan was provided, I dread to think what the heat would be like in the warmer months. The single bed mattress wasn't too hard and was bearable but the mattress on the double bed was so thin it was like sleeping on a board.

Review 17:All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay a pleasant one. Breakfast was excellent. Sunday dinner a must!!

Review 18:Room looked worn out and could have been a little cleaner.

Review 19:Good price, comfortable bed, well located for the town centre and railway station. Pleasant breakfast.

Review 20:My partner went to the wrong floor and our key opened the door. We then had a phone call saying they had a complaint. Also it seemed that it was more of a hostel than an hotel, a lot of screaming n shouting crying children.

Review 21:Nice big bath

Review 22:Didn't like the fact that the smaller details had been overlooked. There was hair in the bath plughole. An electric socket on the wall was very loose. he cups provided for tea were not particularly clean.

Review 23:It was a pleasant enough hotel and the member of staff who dealt with me was polite.

Review 24:first impressions hotel looked tired needed some up-grading. First site of room looked great - large and clean. Then come across problems - non-smoking room that stunk of smoking, toilet in disgusting condition and next morning found out no sink plug.

Review 25:size of room

Review 26:VERY noisy outside. If you're looking to rest - don't come here. If you're looking to drink to all hours - this might be your place. No phone in our room. We requested a taxi for the morning which the staff never ordered. So, we needed to call in the morning (at 5am) to get someone there. We barely made our train because of the delay.

Review 27:Three beds for 3 people was nice. Room was clean. It's also very close to the train station making it easy to get in and out of Cardiff.

Review 28:In the past have had nothing but praise for the staff, however on this occasion had to ask to be served breakfast as was completely ignored though only three other people in the dining room and seeing two newcomers get served though we had waited 25 minutes! Also had to ask for cups and then for toast! On the second morning which was a serve yourself breakfast had to wait for a table as the hotel was packed that morning but then had to shift the last occupants plates etc to clear a place to eat and have our breakfast Sat with dirty plates etc as the staff could not cope, also had to ask for cutlery. Must admit never experienced this here before however if this continues to be the same on our next visit which was already pre-booked we shall be looking to stay elsewhere for our rugby trips.

Review 29:Stayed here a few times and have always considered the hotel to be good Value for the price.

Review 30:Never.

Review 31:When I went to Wales for three nights and have visited my family. Also I went out to Cardiff, Newport and Merthyr Tydfil. I would like to go to Wales again next year.

Review 32:Little dated bedroom needed revamp bed a little uncomfortable. Quite noisy due to Sat night and unable to shut windows as needed a prop to do this which was not in room

Review 33:Friendly helpful hard working staff

Review 34:TV only had 1 channel, shower was a dribble of water. hot water didn't come through for 20 mins. Owner very rude on arrival

Review 35:Staff were friendly and helpful

Review 36:Nothing.

Review 37:There are a lot of negative reviews which I think are very unfair to be honest. Check in was easy and efficient..The rooms are very good size with clean and fresh white bed linen. Free wifi throughout ..Good breakfast in the morning.. Staff are very friendly and do their best to make your stay comfortable. The hotel is central location near town centre.. I will definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning .. All in all we were happy what we paid for.

Review 38:Room was dirty, room smelt, breakfast was cold and not value for money, empty sweet wrappers and pasta under the bed(s), bar person never around

Review 39:NOTHING!

Review 40:Standard of cleanliness was low. Pretty noisy outside of an evening at pub closing time.

Review 41:Location - right on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. An hour to Cardiff on the train.

Review 42:The place looks rather dated and could use some refreshing here and there. We didn't like the town itself - it was full of drunk people who damaged our vehicles at night

Review 43:The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. There was also a very friendly Portuguese guy at the reception when we arrived.

Review 44:Quite a tired looking hotel. Carpets are threadbare in a number of places and many of the showers (two rooms I tried this time, and the room in which I stayed last time) are broken. The rooms are very hot.

Review 45:Location right in town centre is excellent

Review 46:Peeling wallpaper, electrical socket hanging off wall, no ventilation, small and uncomfortable bed, running out of toilet roll, broken window blind, single glazed widow so street noise at night, told to order food by 8.45 when the hotels website says open until 9.30, nobody running the bar, threadbare carpets and poor lighting on stairways ad a general feeling of a run down hotel.

Review 47:Great staff, and super food.

Review 48:The hotel room has a large safe placed in the corner! There was no remote for the TV! No spoon to for the coffee! The hotel looked like it was an old office block as it still had the old office lighting in the ceiling voids. When looking for the TV remote I found a bottle of hp sauce in one of the draws!

Review 49:It was close to a wetherspoons!

Review 50:Hotel in need of modernisation and re-decoration - wallpaper torn and damp, broken and dangerous electrical socket, TV remote didn't work. Even though radiator was turned off, room too hot because the large hot water pipe for the radiators was very hot in summer. Couldn't open a window due to traffic noise. Towels for 2 even though room booked for 3. Extractor fan didn't work in En-suite. Carpets dirty. No personal reading lights. Breakfast staff lazy and not interested in their customers - had to ask for everything. When leaving, the owner didn't ask whether we enjoyed our stay.

Review 51:Good location, free Wi-Fi worked well and connected very easily. Good help from receptionist on parking. Good location in centre of Merthyr Tydfil. We stayed in 5 other good value hotels during our holiday, one bad one is acceptable!

Review 52:Only one plug point in the room worked, room was very hot and only the fan light windows opened. There was 3 adults and only towels for two and one glass in the bathroom. Information states a secure car park but there was not any on site we had to use a public car park a few minutes away. The room was in need of refurbishment and modernising. The wardrobe had chunks out of the bottom. Stain on the carpet and on the chair.

Review 53:Beds were comfortable ,bed linen clean and extra pillows if required.Towels in the bathroom clean . Good shower plenty of hot water. A fan was supplied in the room. Tea and coffee making facility.

Review 54:The whole place is dirty, many things were broken or inoperable, the breakfast was poorly prepared and tasteless. There was no free wifi in the rooms, as advertised.

Review 55:location

Review 56:Being told at 10.55am if you are not out of your room by 11 the owner will charge you. There was another way to deliver that message but that wasn't the one.

Review 57:Having stayed here a number of times the staff are always friendly. A new member of staff was seen for the first time last week, she needs to learn more about the hospitality business and smile a bit more when talking to guests as she looked miserable all the time. Apart from that great and the Sunday Roast is Merthyr's best kept secret.. Amazing.

Review 58:Looks like my nan lived there. It looked Horendus in side and out side. Didn't feel comfortable at all when we stayed there. Never normally give feed back to hotels but this hotel was proper bad felt embarrassed to stay in there.

Review 59:I thought fact that the bell didn't work in the reception and the noise from the public outside was a bit off-putting.

Review 60:I thought price very reasonable

Review 61:Had to clean the light switches in my room of sticky finger prints and curtains and blinds were a video dodgy apart from that all good.

Review 62:Having stayed here lots of times this year, the rack rate has gone up to £55 from £49 for the weekend of 24th July but expected that because of events happening. I liked, no I loved the Sunday roast carvey for £7.95 it was amazing. The girls who work there are very helpful and work extremely hard. Ron the night porter is funny.

Review 63:The rooms we had were not properly cleaned and the furniture was broken. Shower attachment was missing and I received no response to my email complaining about this.

Review 64:The beds and towels were clean

Review 65:bar, the carpet needed throwing out, really past its best. This room let the whole hotel down. Could do with a revamp. The bar attendant really pleasant.

Review 66:really fresh crisp bed linen ? bath and shower, excellent full breakfast, friendly and attentive staff.

Review 67:Water in the shower took a little while to warm up. Wished we had been in time for sunday lunch as they stopped serving at 4pm. however they did make me a sandwich.

Review 68:Staff all very friendly and helpful. Wifi excellent. Rooms spacious and beds very comfy. Breakfast was fantastic

Review 69:The hotel needs a good general maintenance: fresh paint job, new wallpaper, check all the lights in all rooms. Noise at night: very close to bars with loud music.Intermittent WiFi

Review 70:Perfect bed and shower/bathroom. Very close to both train- and busstation.

Review 71:The hotel needs some updating and repairs. The room was fine but the shower didn't work very well and the fan in the room was broken (no air conditioning).

Review 72:Good location for seeing the Brecon Beacons and South Wales valleys. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

Review 73:Needs a refresh but not to modernise it too much.

Review 74:The hotel was in the centre, and had a charm about it. The breakfast was great for the price. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 75:General impression of reception was good, with the public areas looking quite presentable. My room was "tired" and was in need of a total redecoration and upgrade: The shower didn't work and the bathroom generally needed a good clean (dirty tiles around the bath and discoloured grout/sealant). Bed was clean & fairly comfy. Large single glazed windows overlooked the adjacent town centre street: This lead to quite a bit of noise disturbance during the night.

Review 76:Location was good, in the centre of town. Plenty of on-street parking outside the hotel (6pm to 8am) and a public (pay) car park nearby.

Review 77:No ventilation in bathroom. Shaver point did not work in bathroom. Washbasin plughole was dirty. Thick dust on headboards and chair legs. Doorplates and handles in corridor doors dirty full of fingerprints. Dirty light switches. Plate glass windows with two top openers, one opening about an inch and the other possibly a fraction wider. This made the room very stuffy and lacking in fresh air. Peeling wallpaper. Skirtings and woodwork not painted in decades. Blinds at window missing some louvres. All in all, very shabby looking and run-down.

Review 78:Decent sized room and bathroom. Comfortable beds. Breakfast tasty but lacking in choice: cereal, fry-up or veggie fry-up. Good coffee. Free WiFi.

Review 79:Wi-Fi signal poor/fair - not acknowledged by staff.

Review 80:Value for Money. Spacious room and bathroom. Well heated. Substantial evening meal. Bar facility. In heart of town and therefore close to public transport facilities.

Review 81:* Very outdated shower attachment over bath * No A/C could mean a hot stuffy room in summer ?? * Many rooms have been refurbished but mine was needing it

Review 82:* Friendly helpful staff *Short bus journey to Brecon Mountain Railway but central location in Merthyr * Well placed for exploring the Brecon * Large room was dated but clean * Great bathroom, bath & lots of hot water * Bar & Restaurant

Review 83:Water pressure so low that only a trickle came out of the shower head. Lighting in the room could be improved (difficult to read).

Review 84:Location, room size, cleanliness, reception.

Review 85:The Wifi was intermittent but worked most of the time. There were no mains sockets by the bed to charge phones. The one way system (but that's not the hotel's fault).

Review 86:My expectations were easily exceeded. The room was large and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a large car park very near that was cheap.

Review 87:Where to start, we arrived on the Sunday and there was only one member of staff working in the entire Hotel. We asked if the heating could be turned on, they said yes, but in never came on. There was enormous banging during the night, which awoke the entire hotel, the night porter had fallen asleep and didn't hear it. Just an awful place.

Review 88:Leaving

Review 89:The rooms where to hot and the interior decorations where very dated old fashioned

Review 90:Staff where welcoming and helpful and the location was great central location and the breackfast was lovely

Review 91:rooms had fixed closed windows , sometimes the heater pipe was very hot which made us more warm owing to which we felt bit sweating The phone line wasn't working

Review 92:Breakfast, hospitality, location of the hotel

Review 93:Dust, Dust oh and more Dust! Clean surfaces around the sink but it's like they forgot to wipe any other flat surface that wasn't used in the main.

Review 94:Proximity to Bike Park Wales.

Review 95:Poor WIFI signal

Review 96:Good town location with plenty of facilities on the doorstep & ideally located for exploring the Brecon Beacons & surrounding area!

Review 97:slightly dated carpet- but for this price - compared to the service and cleanliness- can't complain

Review 98:excellent location for a meeting that I needed to attend, staff were excellent and helpful, excellent value for money for the room and for the meal

Review 99:Merthyr town itself was a bit rough but the hotel was a convenient stay.

Review 100:Very well situated, right in the town centre near to train and bus station. Staff were very friendly and the bar was conveniently open 24 hours. The room was bigger than I expected and was nicely presented.

Review 101:hot room (no possibility to change temperature), pressure-less shower, prehistoric two-tap faucets, WiFi barely usable from room, breakfast very poor quality, dinner absolute disaster (I'm sure my sole was microwaved), dirty, stained, old furniture throughout hotel, sticky tables in the bar.

Review 102:that it was only 3 days long

Review 103:Run down, tired looking hotel. When we arrived the room was cold as the heating had been turned off. We were brought a fan heater when we asked but the manager did not look very happy about our request. Paper thin walls. Jaded decor.

Review 104:Convenient for station. Easy to get to Cafarthya Castle Park where some nice walks along the river begin.

Review 105:The passage from the lobby to the toilets stunk of stale tobacco. Someone obviously regularly breaks the no smoking laws...???

Review 106:The Resturant was very pleasant and had a very varied menu are a very reasonable cost.

Review 107:The shower was dreadful, the water just trickled out.

Review 108:Staff were friendly; sheets and towels were clean. Breakfast was ok for the price but very limited if you didn't want anything hot

Review 109:There was no sugar and maybe the shower head could be changed for a better one.

Review 110:The staff were really friendly as it was my first visit to Merthyr and I was very impressed.

Review 111:We rang a day before to let the hotel know we would be checking in late as we had a 4 hour drive after work. We checked in at 11pm as agreed and proceeded to our room. On arrival it was apparent that the bathroom lights worked but the main room lights did not. We rang reception and were met by maintenance. He tried all of the lights and admitted it was strange they didn't work. I assumed at this stage we would be offered another room, as we had yet to unpack, but we were not. Instead he agreed to come back in the morning to fix it. The site itself is very central, whilst this is an upside it is also very much a downside as the city centre was very noisy till late in the morning. Following a bad nights sleep due to noise we were then met by only cold water in the shower. This was rectified by staff after a 20 min wait for the boiler to kick in but added to the dissatisfaction. On going to the reception to inquire about the lights we explained we would be going out to breakfast then back to ours rooms to prepare for the wedding we had traveled down for, and that we would need the repair to be outside of that time period. However the maintenance man came at exactly the time we requested the room be free for us to change. Meaning we had to turn him away. Far from a relaxing break the hotel simply added unnecessary stress to our weekend. I would highly advise booking elsewhere.

Review 112:Being in a centre of Town it was very noisy and with the heat we needed the windows open and the fan provided on all night. It could really do with an update, it looks tired.

Review 113:The staff were all lovely, friendly & helpful. Great if you wanted to go to local Pubs & Clubs. We needed somewhere local as we were going to a funeral.

Review 114:The staff are friendly and useful, always willing to help! Location is ideal, right in the centre. Was staying for The Blackout's last show, and have stayed here before, and will definitely stay again if in the area!

Review 115:Door locks are old style, so is some of the furniture. Heaters cant be closed by us. Elevator is too slow.

Review 116:Rooms were spacious, location was quite good. We were given SUITE as family room, which was pleasant surprise and that one was huge, almost 2 and half huge rooms.

Review 117:the rooms were extremely hot, opening the windows didn't help much, it was really hard to bear. it was generally clean, but the hotel could do with a handyman to fix holes in the bathroom door, torn wallpaper, broken ceiling tiles, etc. but you obviously get what you pay for, so if you only need a place to sleep with a bed and shower - it is perfect.

Review 118:good location, friendly reception staff, good value for money.

Review 119:Parking here is non existent, our car was vandalised overnight parked outside legally in a loading bay. Breakfast is a little insipid much like the decor which has not been updated since 1971.

Review 120:Proximate you to the High Street

Review 121:Curtains hanging off rail, window surround were very dirty. Wardrobe seen better days. And the toilet paper holder was on an opposit wall which was difficult to reach making the toilet seat very loose.

Review 122:The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 123:Nothing was wrong.

Review 124:Just a nice place. Everything you would want to do in Merthyr Tydfil was walking distance to hotel. And a great room rate £49 was really value for money and would highly recommend this hotel to others for a short stay.

Review 125:The room was terrible, I had to switch rooms as there was no light in the first one. No fridge available. Was really cold and heating only at night. Very old rooms with unattractive setup, nothing really worked in them!

Review 126:The location is good as it is in the middle of town with easy transport. Staff were friendly

Review 127:It was cold in my room, the window wouldn't close so I heard all the shouting, the floor was sticky, the staff were rude, the plug sockets had to be plugged into other plug sockets to work. The room was just ridiculous.

Review 128:No secure parking . New one way system difficult to negotiate. Furniture broken+ poor quality. Wi Fi only very intermittent. Room 302 very cold (although we were moved on request as unable to shut window).

Review 129:Receptionist on arrival helpful. Rooms and communal areas clean. Towels and bedding clean Very reasonably priced, so not expecting luxury.

Review 130:The evening meal was my only concern. It tasted as though it had been re heated and therefore was well overpriced. Restaurant was not open for the times advertised either.

Review 131:The room was superb and the location was excellent. Nice, friendly staff.

Review 132:Come on! At these prices whose going to complain?

Review 133:The Owner and Staff make this hotel they are excellent.Food, location, bar prices are great.stayed here before and will be staying again.

Review 134:When we finally got back and entered our room for bed it was freezing! Slept with my long sheepskin coat on top. In the morning the heating was on however. Perhaps they turn off the heating at a certain time-we didn't turn in til 1am.

Review 135:Right next to bus station so we could hop on the bus to Cardiff to watch the opening game of six nations rugby tournament. Good breakfast.

Review 136:No mattress protector, kettle element was caked up, pillows one each.

Review 137:The staff were pleasant, the location was good, hot water was instant. Make your own fun as it is a budget hotel on need of a spring clean.

Review 138:Staff in reception and behind bar not in the least bit welcoming .Unwilling to enter into any form of conversational exchange .I think they were the owners . Carpets in communal areas worn . Carpets on stairs frayed . Decor tired ,Due to the size of the room it felt cold.

Review 139:Loc ation was central. Free wi fi. Room was large ,with area for sleeping and a further area with lounge chairs and television.

Review 140:No parking... Room wasnt made up ready Smoke alarm hanging out of ceiling. Bed looked like someone had been in it remote was on pillow and mccdonalds coke drink was on table half drunk. Room was not worth the £40 I was charged. Plug in bathroom hazard tape on it.

Review 141:Location was spot on.

Review 142:Theres a smell of damp up onthe forth floor when you get off the lift thats quite strong. The tv next door was left on all night for some reason.

Review 143:We stayed due to a work christmas party. The room was clean and comfortable. Tea and coffee faclities excellent. Bathroom soaps and shower gels provided. Towels clean. Room warm when you switch the heater on. Staff outstanding and respond to questions straight away.

Review 144:Noisy street, noisy neighbours. Complained about noise next door.....partying, banging walls etc.Security said he would phone them. That made no difference.Complained again and asked to be moved. In fairness we were mored to a very inferior room, which thankfully was quiet but the bed, although clean, was old, unsupportive, lumpy and bumpy.Couldn't wait to get out of there in the morning.Whole hotel could do with a total refurb as dated, dingy and drab.

Review 145:Location....near shops restaurants and leisure centre.
