Reviews for Britannia Grand Burstin Hotel

Review 1:When booking it did say there may be a small charge for the dogs. This turned out to be £10.00 per dog plus a £50.00 deposit in case they made a mess. If anyone lets their dogs make a mess then they shouldn't be letting them travel. Also surely the £10.00 charge is more than enough to clean up (although the owners should do this). So a bargain night of £29.00 became £99.00! We were told we would get the deposit back if the room was ok in 4/5 days. This is really not good enough. If they're going to do this can't they just hold the deposit and give it back immediately.

Review 2:Location was good for onward journey to channel tunnel.

Review 3:Booking.com said parking available, and free wifi- Parking was £3.50, and wifi was only on the ground floor-and my room was on the ninth floor. Room was very cold, with only a tiny wall-hanging electric heater, Bathroom was simply tiled walls covered with boarding and everything painted white. Very dated.

Review 4:Price, location

Review 5:the ballroom was quite cold ,and smelt of animal urine .entertainment was a bit dated .new years eve ,would be nice to see a comedian or other family entertain aimed at all ages .our girls where not interested in ballroom dancing or the same in house entertainment team again doing the same sort of thing they have done on our every visit.

Review 6:the staff where friendly even though looked bit stressed. food excellent. and we did enjoy our stay.

Review 7:Didn't realize there would be charge of £3.50 for the Car park that was owned by the Hotel, that was a bit Sneaky.didn't mention anything when i booked.

Review 8:Liked the Location, Good if you want to Travel to Calais or just want a weekend away, Staff were Friendly, the Hotel was Buzzing with People, Mainly older Couples and some Families.Price was Good apart from the Extra £3.50 on Top for the car park, which was not mentioned when Booked.

Review 9:We had ordered breakfast included but wasnt given this. The first morning we got breakfast for free but the morning we had to leave we had to pay full price. Our room wasnt cleaned and we went to complain we were told we had to wait until 10pm for a porter to come in before we could get clean towel, clean cups and bin sorted. We got clean towels and cups, chucked on one of the beds. Bin hadnt been empited and new bag in nor was the dirty cups taken away. The room wasnt very clean and the mattreses were hard and could feel every spring on them.

Review 10:We were given wrong rooms, with wrong beds but this was sorted ASAP so thumps up for that

Review 11:Tv,s very old and remote didnt work.

Review 12:I have stayed at hotel before, but was very impressed this time to see the whole place had been given an update. the rooms all painted, new carpets and spotlessly clean throughout. the staff were very helpful and very polite. the entertai.ment was good. we were so pleased that we have booked to go back in two weeks time. fantastic value for money.

Review 13:This hotel seems to be a haven for day trippers across the channel to buy illegal levels of cigarettes and alcohol. I have never seen so many old folk hanging around the outside of a building smoking, creating a near impenetrable wall of fumes, then jumping on coaches the next morning with empty suitcases. To create impenetrable walls of smoke across the country........no soap in the toilet soap dispenser, sticky badly stained carpets......people clearly smoking in rooms across the hotel, broken lifts.....

Review 14:Nice harbour side location, only spoiled by hotel clientele......

Review 15:the rooms were not the same as we have had before not very nice. also when we made the booking problem with breakfast not being booked we have used you before and not had this problem. we also found on one of the floors we had a single room the smell of cigarette smoke all of the time we used the corridors not a great health and safety issue.

Review 16:the entertainment was very good for most ages could be more fun and games for children.nice seating area for groups.

Review 17:old guy playing guitar after shaun sang wasnt very good at all room emptied out very quickly

Review 18:friendly staff , good entertainment from shaun de han , breakfast was great , nice warm room

Review 19:Nothing on the website that our dog would be charged an additional UK10.- for the night. It wasn't as animal friendly as the webpage suggested. TV old-style with just 5 channels. We were on the 4th floor and it was sometimes quicker to use the stairs than the lift.WIFI only available on ground floor. But... remember the price (just UK29/room).

Review 20:Quirky hotel but at only UK29/room, very good value for money. Room large and comfortable and quiet. Used it to be close to Dover ferry for an early crossing.

Review 21:Very shabby décor, bed was on wheels, carpet was soaking wet by the window, family room was directly above the disco which went on until at least 1.30am, breakfast was average.

Review 22:Good location for the Channel Tunnel

Review 23:The building itself is a bit ghastly from the outside - it is designed to resemble one of the ocean liners that may have called at the port in the past, but the result is dominating and imposing! Kind of fun though

Review 24:The location was very good - handy for the town but with excellent views of the harbour, cliffs and sea. The room was quiet, large, clean and comfortable.

Review 25:Harbour resturant basic tables and chairs

Review 26:The room was clean and tidy the bed was comfortable food was good preferred to dine in the victoria resturant did not think much of the harbour resturant at all thought it was very basic entertainment was ok drinks were reasonably priced

Review 27:N/A

Review 28:The Grand Burstin, the hotel that resembles, in architectural style, an ocean going liner! I remember when this hotel was owned by by one man, Mr Motel Burstin, who also used to own The Pier Hill Hotel in Southend on Sea. The Grand Burst in is now part of the Brittania chain of hotels but still retains the essential holiday themes for which it became very well known. Indeed on the night I was staying, just after Christmas, there were 1,000 people staying there, ready to see in the New Year! A great atmosphere with plenty of families, Bingo, and entertainment. Breakfast, although buffet style was good, enhanced by the absence of annoying morning television. Best to get down there before the main rush. In my room there was a complimentary bottle of Perry, chocolates and fudge sweets.

Review 29:Nothing

Review 30:Awful , don't get fooled by the fantastic 9+rewiews! All was great till we entered the room. The floor was not hoovered, small broken glasses Covered the floor " we had a dog so he had to stay in the cage and we had to wear shoes inside the room at all times. Bread crumbs on the tv and on the floor front of the bed. Ketle was full of limescale. Bathroom; "even worst" bath tube was dirty strongly yellow coloured with some public hair near tap. Shower curtain "no words" some blood stain etc... Wash basin tap full of limescale. Bath towels smelled domestos / bleach. Breakfast; Started great as the variety was fantastic unfortunately the bacon was dry, the scrabbled egg was cold. Halfway stopped eating when we recognised that the bun was chewed we presumed it was a rodent. This hotel need to be demolished, extremly out dated not worst to stay. 9+ rewiews looks very similarly. Owner clearly care about money and not quality! Stay away! Spend a little bit more. Ps; 4 lift in the hotel 3 was out of service!

Review 31:The whole of the building appeared run down and desperately in need of refurbishment and upgrade.

Review 32:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. The buffet dinner and breakfast were exceptional value for money.

Review 33:I know it was new year and was full but was put in a smoking room and it stunk of smoke, being none smokers was well bad.. we come to the burstin about 5 or 6 times a year and this is the first time this has happened,, apart from that it was perfect

Review 34:It was very outdated, could do with a good refurb. Food was poor for price charged, all the bar menu food was unavailbe which was all we really needed.

Review 35:It was close to the Euro tunnel

Review 36:Travelled at New Year and it was very busy so for us would avoid this next time as open to eternal people and got very noisy / rowdy

Review 37:location is nice, staff are lovely and hotel has nice touches that they add to your stay.

Review 38:Bad attitude of Management, refused to deal with a complaint, was told that they had to remove extra money from account to prove who I was, room not clean, smelt of smoke, shower did not work very unhappy customer

Review 39:There was nothing at this hotel to like

Review 40:we thought this was a pet friendly hotel . But when it came to the reception they wanted 10 quid for our cocker spaniel and a 50 quid deposit. Plus we had to desplay a sign outside our room warning others we had a dog . I was not happy. The hotel needs a complete refurb . Breakfast was awful . Will not stay again.

Review 41:Clean room

Review 42:Dirty decor in extremely basic rooms. No wardrobes, just hangers on wall hooks. Even in the upgrade restaurant, the food was akin to school dinners.Hotel had large group of travellers staying for New Years Eve who took over the bar area and allowed their children to run riot in the hotel. Overall, not a good experience.

Review 43:Convenient location.

Review 44:The hotel room was falling to peaces yellow rings around the bath resulted in me and friend not having one tv didnt have a remote the beds very very wobbly stains on carpets and even though it was a smoking room it had a really bad smell that wasnt smoke and made my cloths and belongings stink

Review 45:we rang to say we would not arrive until 9 pm and having paid for half board were surprised to only be offered a salad and no dessert. I had to remind staff that our 13 year old grand-daughter was sharing our room. We were told that the 10pm staff would bring up a bed. However when we got to the room there was already a bunk bed. The problem was that having got into bed we were then disturbed and as our crossing was 6am needed as much rest as possible. Breakfast was cereal and cornflakes. It would have been better to have changed our booking to room only then we could have chosen our own food outside the hotel.

Review 46:staff were friendly and helpful but not well informed - see next bit.

Review 47:To be honest, the worst hotel we ever found in our family travel. The room was never cleaned; biscuit on the floor, dust anywhere, very dirty bath. We couldn't stay; so, we ask soon for the refund and likely we received the money back. Gianfranco

Review 48:Everything else, filthy carpets, very old outdated equipment, noisy neighbours - very thin walls, bad breakfasts - cold coffee overcooked food long queues for toast. A terrible hotel should be refurbished throughout. It's not expensive but is not even worth what we paid, one to avoid.

Review 49:Location. And car park.

Review 50:No wifi in rooms lifts breaking down

Review 51:We have stayed here before on coach trips and overnight stays Place is dated but clean and comfortable no heirs or graces staff are great food is good

Review 52:Hotel very old in places but you get what you paye for if you get good deal on booking would love to see this hotel with a cash injection it could be fantastic

Review 53:Very cheap price

Review 54:The people snoring all night next door, WHY put beds back to back through he alls- crazy to loud couldn't sleep all night even after banging on the wall- walls are like paper!

Review 55:Ease of access

Review 56:The hotel charges £3.50 per night for parking. The car park was full. No wifi in the room as advertised. The shower did not warm up at all, even after 15 minutes - it was icy cold (albeit at 4:30am due to early start). Key did not fit lock to open door, went back to reception and staff helped me gain access, but I was not given a replacement key, I was not reassured that this would be fixed for the next guest either. Some guests hanging around reception and the entrance had clearly consumed drugs, so I felt uncomfortable entering the hotel. Bed was uncomfortable and the decor, fixtures and furniture were in dire need of replacement. Overall, the hotel and the immediate vicinity needs redevelopment, the hotel is currently adding to the run down feel of this part of Folkestone's seafront.

Review 57:The staff did their best to help. Crisp clean sheets. The nearby harbour is very nice.

Review 58:Elevators doors are closing very fast can hurt somebody.

Review 59:Good location, value for money, excellent fish restaurant nearby. Staff very friendly and professional.

Review 60:The decor was a little dated but this added to its charm

Review 61:We liked the feel of the place .. Warm and friendly. We met some nice people there . Entertainment was good , food was good to ..clean and comfortable , good value for money

Review 62:The rooms wasn't clean the halls smelled of smoke the food was just warm and tasted like it was from the day before asked for sea view and when we got there our room was over the kitchen where alot of smell and banging was coming from asked to change rooms and staff was not very helpful to begin with but then upgraded us to premium room was alot nicer but still didn't look like it had been cleaned as there was dirty towel hung on back of the bathroom door would say this hotel has gone worse each time we have been we will not be staying again

Review 63:Like that it is close to family as parent was taken sick

Review 64:The fire alarm went off at 2.30 a.m. which meant the 1st and 2nd floor guests had a very interrupted night's sleep. The far C wing fire escape stairs were in darkness, which was dangerous. There was no real explanation from the night staff, other than it was a false alarm . No apology, Nothing !! Guests standing about on a very windy & cold night in their PJs, most were elderly or disabled. Also there was something like a sheet of metal banging outside all night in the wind, which meant I couldn't sleep and was extremely tired in the morning. I was glad to get home. Hotel car park needs to be better managed to save space for guests. You've got the car registration nos. so you get them moved if they park over two spaces. Space is valuable in this hotel car park.

Review 65:The room had a nice view of the harbour and was on the whole clean. To make up for lack of house keeping staff over Christmas, a bottle of wine, boxes of fudge and chocolates were on the dressing table and lots of tea and coffee etc ( no tea spoons though ). A request had been left in the room to use a black bin bag provided for my rubbish & leave outside the door. I didn't have a problem with that.

Review 66:i think if you,re quoted a price for a stay you should add the extras on before you quote a price for a stay NOT afterwards, and not charge for parking or childrens entertainment which should be part of the service

Review 67:Some minor repairs in room took to long to repair. eg:- light over bed switch not working, toilet seat broken waited two days for repairmms

Review 68:Meals and entertainment good. Bar prices good. Staff very helpful

Review 69:I was in an attic room in the annex with a skylight. Hills behind the hotel but I do not blame the hotel for this as it was situated right by the Harbour.

Review 70:Restaurant staff very friendly and efficient.

Review 71:I had no idea that the hotel didn't have wifi in all rooms. Although it had wifi in the public areas, it was very weak. If someone is staying in the hotel for work, he/ she is going to be in trouble. About, breakfast all the meat item in the menu were pork. There is no option for chicken. However, we were offered veg sausages which didn't taste very good.

Review 72:The hotel is pretty good. We enjoyed our stay. A great value for money. Breakfast had a lot of variety. Evening entertainment was a bonus. I also found the hotel environment very family friendly. The staffs were great!

Review 73:Not the smartest place to stop. More like a Levante beach hotel in Benidorm. Pre Christmas, a lot of OAP coach parties.

Review 74:Location Ok for overnight stop before using the channel tunnel. Although post code took us to the wrong area. You need to select harbour approach.

Review 75:Remote for tv not working. Food not great. Staff not too helpful. Staff didnt read booking and put us in smoking room so had to change room. asked for extra pillows but had to get them ourselves after 2 hours waiting.

Review 76:Location. Comfort of room.

Review 77:I initially had a room, which had old furniture in it, after a few days I was moved to a more up to date room . I thought that the breakfast in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced, also the dinner service was good. The stay was made easier with the car parking being close to hand.

Review 78:It is in need of refurbishment, but is fine as it is, just not luxurious. For some reason, they switch the internet off from time to time for hours on end, although it is available in the bar, which is far too noisy to use Skype.

Review 79:The hotel is clean and friendly, and excellent value for money

Review 80:The late check out info wasn't passed on to the early morning staff so I was disturbed twice before I was due to check out at 13.00. other than that it was ok.

Review 81:Cheap, clean, handy for ferries - much cheaper than staying in Dover . Country and West weekend when we stayed.......never seen so many truly and deeply drunk grannies in my life...hilarious. All good, staff great.

Review 82:the Victoria restaurant dos,nt do soft veg only crunchy wich I do not like I cannot be the only person that hates hard veg

Review 83:we like it because it is ideal for the ferry

Review 84:Appalling food. Never before have I seen such an incredible volume of tasteless, over cooked, poor quality food. This is budget, high volume catering in the extreme.

Review 85:Good location, nice staff. Quite a bizarre experience all round, but in a good way. I think.

Review 86:The food in the restaurant was ok the main problem was that the WHOLE place needs a revamp but still keeping the grand designs it has

Review 87:The area the view from our room the politeness of the staff

Review 88:the views when we have asked for a view we have always got one! the front of house staff are polite friendly helpfull, the rooms are spotless. we love it

Review 89:Stayed twice, the first time as OK. The second time the Xmas dinner was poor. The roast potatoes were covered in herbs, cold and not cooked through, the vegetables were the same, cold and raw! The meal was not worth it! I told the manager(the bloke who took our money!) who failed to take my complaint serious.

Review 90:Really gone down hill since we last stayed there 4 years ago, more of a half way house for benefits people now, a few people getting drunk and causing trouble, spoilt it for paying guests.

Review 91:The rooms were clean and beds comfortable, staff were friendly.

Review 92:Tried to cancel for personal reasons. Not allowed and payment already taken in advance for 2 rooms. £70 wasted, for which I blame Booking.com, who claim that cancellation is easy. NOT so!

Review 93:we have been to the Burstin many, many times over many years,Last weekend the 4 of us thought the enterainment was the best of all our visits.Saying that we have allways enjoyed the shows. The only downside was dogs being allowed, the barking was anoying

Review 94:The only downside is it was extremely windy and due to very old windows it was very loud and kept me awake all night

Review 95:friendly and helpful staff. Food not bad

Review 96:We did not like finding out that using the pool was an extra charge. We did not like how dated and unclean the furnishings were. The carpet was duct taped together in many places.

Review 97:The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good with a lot of variety.

Review 98:The hotel itself is becoming a bit tired and in need of some refurbishment including full WiFi throughout

Review 99:The hotel is conveniently situated right by the harbour

Review 100:You need to add group booking to your list as none of the travel type applied and there was no option

Review 101:The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Plenty of food and helpful staff.

Review 102:Very noisy people in the room next door disturbed my sleep between 10 and 12 pm. They were in an executive room, so perhaps felt they could do what they liked, including making a lot of unwelcome noise.

Review 103:Helpful reception staff

Review 104:Reception staff were very uninformative and could barely raise a smile. The hotel could do with a total refurb, very dated and bathroom was in need of a good clean and refurbishment.

Review 105:The 2 old men singing after the cabaret . So dated and boring

Review 106:Such poor entertainment.. Same cd for the last 3 times we have been. Bar closes early. When Craig was there and they had kareoke in the other bar was such good entertainment. Sean is good but won't be coming again as se old all the time. Very boring.

Review 107:I was shocked on arrival. The hotel smelt of stale smoke. The layout of the foyer was like being in a fairground arcade. The rooms were barren, cold, with extremely thin walls. The noise levels were horrendous. I had to move to another room which was equally dreadful.

Review 108:Unfortunately - nothing.

Review 109:Room was cold, chair in room collapsed and my wife was injured, went to phone reception and phone was not working, lack of staff response. Paid for 2 days parking, but car park was full, so had to pay to park on street. Will never return.

Review 110:Clean, good location, good facilities well presented

Review 111:Nothing!

Review 112:We have stayed here twice now,we think it's great value for money, food is superb! Staff very helpfull, room spacious and comfortable.will keep coming back as love our stays here

Review 113:The Harbour Restaurant is like a 'Works Canteen. The hotel itself is looking very tired and dated.Car Park not big enough.

Review 114:Location very good. Value for money. Bar prices reasonable.Entertainment good if you like that sort of thing!

Review 115:Breakfast could be better but for the price paid was acceptable. Very tired in bedroom. Carpets particularly could do with clean.

Review 116:Exceptional deal through booking.com b/b. Staff generally very good particularly young man on reception.

Review 117:The rooms were just horrible the TV was tiny and the channels didn't work we could hear next door having a shower and talking the toilet leaked over night and the bed was horrible only one pillow each not even spare in the wardrobe. If it was more modern had freeview telly and a nicer bathroom then it would be a much nicer place to stay as the location is lovely. The parking was terrible also.

Review 118:Dogs.do.you.know what breed you are letting in.would not let my grandchildren near some of them.make them have a muzzle on.and smoking in some of the rooms.

Review 119:Excellent value for money. The room we stayed in had a good view of the harbour. The bedroom, bathroom and bedlinen were spotlessly clean. The bed was very comfortable. We have paid a lot more for hotels with poor beds and worse facilities in the rooms. Some of the general areas of the hotel do need attention, decorating and updating etc and our bathroom would be improved if it was re-furbished. However we paid £42 for the double room and £3.50 for parking which was excellent value for money. Staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful. At the price we paid we think the facilities do represent superb value for money.

Review 120:This is our second time staying at the hotel, we came last winter too. Was so happy with it last year that we decided to return this year. Booked on advance a double room (smoking). Arrived at the hotel, the man at reception didn't really seem interested in his job or helping. Went to our room to find out it was none smoking. Had to change rooms but only room available was a twin, so spent the night in separate beds. There was no toilet roll in the bathroom and only 1 bath towel. Was woken up about 3am by screaming, banging and shouting from next door, then couldn't get back to sleep. Very dissappointed as I have 4 young children at home and this was my first night in 10 months without my children so was looking forward to a nice rest and good sleep. Felt I had a wasted journey. We came from London

Review 121:TV remote didn't work unless 2 inches from TV. Dirty 'clean' towels. Breakfast offering cold twice. Porridge and custard made with water not milk.

Review 122:Low cost

Review 123:The room was spacious and comfortable, excellent value and rather stylish. The location is perfect for pubs, clubs, the cultural quarter and the beach. Just need to re-open the railway and the fun-fair......Come on Folkestone council!!!

Review 124:very helpful I visit hotel 3 to 4 times a year, gets better every time, reception are all ways cheerful and can not help you enough, well done all staff.

Review 125:The breakfast is not very good, it would be nice if the food was of a higher quality / standard. The hotel is long passed its best before date and could do with a major upgrade / overhaul. however that would push up prices so you can not have everything.

Review 126:Very good value for the money your being charged. Its clean, comfortable and friendly staff.

Review 127:The car parking could do with being more organized you have to pay 3.50 to park and there were no spaces so we had to pay to park between two containers as there was no space as some cars were parked across 2 bays parking not good

Review 128:The hotel was comfortable and quiet staff could be a bit more helpful

Review 129:Took me 3 phone calls to eventually talk to room service. No standard staff training (some staff really nice and others almost rude). I was late to a meeting because of a 20' argument between a staff member and a taxi driver at the car park exit, preventing anyone from leaving the car park! Btw the price of car park is too high £10/night even if you stay for a week.

Review 130:Location and building

Review 131:Gone down hill big time

Review 132:Why do we have to stay in s open prison it's like a refugee camp ! We use to come down 3 or 4 times a year and stay at the burstin not anymore
