Reviews for The New Continental

Review 1:Hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. Car parking was good, Room was clean and bed was comfortable. Breakfast was a highlight as it was freshly cooked and delicious unlike many hotels where it is buffet style.

Review 2:Rather noisy as Christmas parties on.Think on arrival reception staff could have been a little more helpful as regards getting us a table for meal in restaurant.we were told all that they had was table at 5.45 when in fact we were able to easily get a table at 7 o'clock when I called into bistro and asked myself.

Review 3:Room was clean and warm. Food in bistro great and excellent value.Breakfast mediocre on first morning very short staffed. A little better on our second morning. Overall quality of breakfast not great considering room price.

Review 4:Internet connection is not great on the 5th floor. Central heating makes big noise. The gym has only 3 machines and no treadmill. Initial room had no lighting. Breakfast is not a buffet so you need to order somehow.

Review 5:Nice room, nice brasserie in the basement

Review 6:Both the pool and the restaurant were closed during our stay which was disappointing and there wasn't much choice in the breakfast buffet but what we did have was of great quality!

Review 7:This is very nice hotel in a great location. Loved how big our room was!

Review 8:Sauna at 60C not a sauna, leisure centre a bit tired, clean but a bit too worn . One night watch guy not customer orientated at all , BUT it was 02.30hrs and colleague apologised .

Review 9:Leisure centre, pool, gym, sauna etc use included without restriction. Breakfast good, Full English included in price . Rooms fully carpeted, soft warm classic.

Review 10:Stayed for 1 night to go to the theatre, wish we could have stayed longer. The staff were excellent especially the lady on reception. The rooms were clean comfortable and spacious. Will definitely go back again.

Review 11:The general facilities were good but the fitness centre was pretty special. Location was good, walking distance to everything without being too close, good for sleeping

Review 12:Sounds from the corridor and room above sometimes disturbing.

Review 13:The location was perfect and close to the city centre. The room was clean and the bathroom was absolutely gorgeous!!

Review 14:I didnt like the miserable staff especially the elderly waiter who served our breakfast on the 2nd day. We only asked for extra toast and it was just thrown on our table. The worst employee was a lady at the reception who gave my partner a dirty look as ahe looked her up and down in disgust. The room was lovely except when the wind blew hard and came howling through the double glazed windows

Review 15:The only thing i like about this hotel was the location. 2 minutes walk from the shops and pubs

Review 16:Made us feel at home, welcome and comfortable, nothing was an issue for the staff, even the ladys on reception put some rock n roll music on for us, food was great, restaurant had a nice ambiance, our room was small but cosy

Review 17:The check out spouse to be at 11AM but The house keeper knock the door one time way before that And they open it ( the door) straight away . Reception lady seems not happy with me when I asked for a bucket of ice but the waiter who delivered them very polite

Review 18:Average room

Review 19:Stayed in room 510 and the noise from the night clubs near by kept us awake till the early hours but apart from that a nice place to stay

Review 20:No complaints about the hotel

Review 21:Wifi was rubbish, noisy floorboards right outside the room woke me up every time anyone walked by.

Review 22:Bathroom! Room was lovely and tidy, very clean, staff were great

Review 23:I didn't like the fact there wasn't a lock on the bathroom door. We were on the top floor too which had a massive stone wall outside so we couldn't actually see anything through our window. It was a bit disappointing. The lift felt as though we weren't going to make it up or down. If you moved too quick it would shake and almost swing!

Review 24:I loved the location of the area and the room was nice but very plain..

Review 25:I was not happy with the parking. They say parking for guests and you pay up front but as we found can't always get a space and they have no control over who parks there

Review 26:the hotel and staff were very good all we wanted. good position to get round Plymouth mad it a very good break

Review 27:Excellent hotel, really great service and the breakfast choice absolutely fabulous. Really nice staff and really helpful reception. Would really recommend this hotel. And will be booking again.

Review 28:Hotel is close to a wheterspoons and really noise late at night we did complain hotel said Plymouth council were looking in to noise levels

Review 29:Location good for shopping and Plymouth hoe

Review 30:Perfect location but very nosey. We changed rooms and again it was still very nosey. We left the hotel just after 7am as so tired

Review 31:The were very helpful and attentive, location was perfect for city centre

Review 32:Our room was very hot, without any heating on. Had to keep the window wide open which allowed us to experience the external raucous noise from Union Street until 3am on 2 nights. Room was situated above kitchen extractor fans, these are very noisy.

Review 33:Good location with car parking (small charge to park). Breakfast was very good and staff were all helpful and pleasant.

Review 34:Very outdated ,bedside lamps too dim no main lightswitch beside bed .No view from room .breakfast should be included in the price. Breakfast overpriced. Should not have to pay for hotel parking

Review 35:Breakfast was really good, room was very comfortable. The hotel is very well situated for city centre shopping, the theatre, restaurants and seafront walks. The brasserie serves excellent food.

Review 36:I liked the fact that the hotel had character, and didn't feel like a business hotel. But the best thing about the hotel was the staff on reception,, they were friendly and happy and helpful I would happily recommend this hotel.

Review 37:Walls very thin, we could hear converstions in next room. Too many signs dotted around the hotel telling you not to do things we wouldnt have done anyway!

Review 38:Really clean. Gym and pool were good for this price range.

Review 39:Amazingly disappointing breakfast choice for such a high-grade hotel. Shades of a B&B - not all of us want cooked - croissants for example?

Review 40:Location, comfort, facilities, staff Bistro evening meal excellent including staff.

Review 41:Parking was awful - could've been better if cars were parked more sensibly as the area was so tight, but some (guests?) had blocked off sections of the car park with their very shoddy parking

Review 42:Staff were great - friendly and full of enthusiasm

Review 43:Nothing.

Review 44:We stay at this hotel several times a year when we visit the theatre which is just 10 minutes walk away. It is always clean and comfortable and the staff are friendly. Breakfast is good and Steve's Brasserie ideal for inexpensive and tasty pre-theatre supper.

Review 45:The shower in my room was not powerful. I also had my door knocked at 9.03 in the morning. Due to check out being 11am this could have woken me up and I had only recently got out of the shower.

Review 46:Breakfast staff were fantastic ?? great service which was fast and friendly

Review 47:Rooms arent well sound insulated, so you can sometimes hear what your neighbour is up to...

Review 48:Excellent food at Steve's Basserie, friendly & helpful staff

Review 49:The location was central easy to walk for retail or local landmarks etc But night time became very very noisy as opposite a well known pub chain carried on till 3am , luckily for us the clocks fell back so we were able to catch up on sleep !!!!!

Review 50:The bed was a bit small - a king size bed would have been better for two average sized adults. Also, the room was very noisy as a result of a fire door just outside the room - you could hear people banging around in the corridors.

Review 51:Lovely 2 night stay, great location for the pavilions and also the town, Barbican and the Hoe all in walking distance. Friendly staff and room was perfect.

Review 52:In a sunlit room it gets very hot. There was no air conditioning so we opened the window. The location of the hotel is on a corner with 2 roads. The option therefore being very hot or have noise whilst sleeping. To be fair there was a ceiling fan and loose provided, which helped whilst awake.

Review 53:Sunlit room, very clean. Nice bright clean reception. Full english served ready to order and piping hot. Near shops and Plymouth Hoe and next to the Pavilions.

Review 54:Expensive for a very basic room. Noisy. Poor quality facilities (toilet didn't flush, tv didn't work, noise from nearby bars, noise from corridor, shower flooded bathroom etc...

Review 55:Location was reasonable

Review 56:Nothing the hotel can do about it ..but the building is a bit of a rabbit warren: up and down stairs along winding corridors through numerous fire doors to get to our room from reception.

Review 57:Very good location

Review 58:At last a hotel room with a mirror over the dressing table & plug sockets directly under the mirror. Very handy for us ladies! Courteous, friendly staff. Room spotless, light & airy. The carpet looked new.

Review 59:Although the hotels location is great, it is located on a very busy cross road, lots of traffic passes by day and night. Noise levels are quite high. If you are a light sleeper then this hotel probably isn't for you.

Review 60:Great spot, located close to everything. On site car parking was also a bonus. Rooms are basic but very spacious and clean. Breakfast at this hotel is lovely. Staff were friendly.

Review 61:No biscuits in your room, booking .com gave no option for breakfast on one of the rooms booking, also I booked three rooms one was booked at different date even though I had confirmation

Review 62:The staff were so helpfull

Review 63:Sadly, I hadn't checked to ensure the pool was open and it wasn't due to maintenance. This was such a shame as it was my only little luxury for our stay that I couldn't use.

Review 64:Room was very clean. Had my elderly Mum with me and we were put on 5th floor, accessible by lift but I worried for fire exit. This was deemed the best floor as no inter floor stairs and quiet. Im not sure about being disabled friendly, purely because of other inter floor stairs (?) and navigating down 5 flights should the need arise! Staff were lovely and helpful especially when Mum was poorly second day - thank you.

Review 65:unhelpful staff. I asked for a twin room because my husband had just come off the ferry following a motorbike accident which left him with a broken shoulder and a broken wrist. A Twin room was found but it was smelly and a long trek from the entrance of the hotel

Review 66:Location close to ferry port.

Review 67:It was a shame the steam room was out of order also I Managed to hurt my foot on the bathroom door in our room as the wood was split and my foot got caught inbetween it causing it to bleed also the room was very dusty and the chairs were very worn

Review 68:The location was perfect as we were going to the Plymouth pavillions

Review 69:Bed and pillow bit hard - would prefer option for a feather pillow.

Review 70:Very clean. Friendly & helpful staff. Good breakfast cooked to order. Excellent value for money.

Review 71:Water pressure in shower was very low and not able to vary the temperature very much (not quite hot enough). Was on 5th floor though.

Review 72:Room was a good size, bathroom was a decent size and layout.

Review 73:Tv turned off randomly, curtains were falling down, smell of oil in our room from the kitchen, corridor smelt muski and dirty, receptionist wasn't very frieny.

Review 74:Location was fair

Review 75:Overpriced, room charge of £130 for a double room in 3 star hotel was exorbitant. Have paid slightly less for better quality 5 star hotels. Only booked here as limited availability in Plymouth due to student arrival weekend. Would not stay here again through choice.

Review 76:Location of hotel and decor

Review 77:The room was quite warm but couldn't sleep with the window open as it was too loud. No air conditioning. However, there was a fan provided.

Review 78:Good location

Review 79:Very noisy, nightclub opposite hotel and drunk people walking and shouting until 3-4 in the morning, impossible to get a nights sleep, real shame as the hotel and staff were excellent.

Review 80:Everything was okay, the hotel, staff, and breakfast was all excellent.

Review 81:wifi not available in room. in todays age if a facility offers wifi it should ensure its available in all rooms. this applies to most hotels i have stayed in and not a criticism of New continental

Review 82:fantastic hotel, restaurant and very professional staff

Review 83:Morning staff at breakfast the lady in the dining room spoke to people (adults) like children as the plates were hot thought this was rather patronising also she was in and out off kitchen putting food in her mouth and then touching clean plates , bowls, cutlery and serving etc without washing her hands not very good to see really but the rest off the staff excellent

Review 84:Excellent really pleased would recommend to everyone xx

Review 85:Steve brassiere - 4 Starters ordered but only 1 correct. The 2 mussels were disgusting! So overcooked no mussels left, just the membraine! Smelt dreadful! Steaks ordered med/rare. Came out rare. Then the Manager disagreed with our opinion & said we'd eaten nearly all of it! Found this ssoo rude!

Review 86:Room modern and clean

Review 87:It was very hot in room even though there was a ceiling fan, paperless due to towel rail being on in quite a small windowless bathroom. Managed to keep cool by opening windows in room, which was a little noisy with traffic, but to be expected in City location.

Review 88:Location was very good. Nice and clean throughout. Spacious bedroom. Staff very helpful.

Review 89:The breakfast was very good.

Review 90:Second night was extremely noisy outside with traffic and shouting from people in the street until gone 3am. We were in Plymouth because of a sick relative. Your invitation to make the visit an adventure was particularly crass.

Review 91:Couldn't take pet into hotel as travelling down to Cornwall which was a shame , though staff very helpful finding and saving a shady spot for car

Review 92:staff very helpful finding a shady sit for pet

Review 93:The spa, it was a bit oldy worldy and needs to refurb. Hotel as a whole could do with aome updating.

Review 94:The room was huge and clean! Parking on site is amazing and breakfast was freshly made to order.... Nice touch! Staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 95:Some of the facilities were a bit rickety, like the shower and the lift.

Review 96:Clean. Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed. You can open the windows, unlike most hotels.

Review 97:Really could have done with A/C in a tower block on a hot summer night

Review 98:Car Park Good location for central Plymouth and the Theatre Royal Clean with recently renovated room and en suite

Review 99:Pillows were to soft for me, could not sleep first night until got used to them.

Review 100:You helped make my stay very enjoyable, all staff very polite and cheerfull, Room and bathroom great and spacious, Good view, Dinner in Restaurant Excellent, even I arrived late in Evening near closing time, Service was perfect & not hurried, Thank You to Head Waiter & Chef, Hope to see you again soon, Richard Green,

Review 101:breakfast was an experiance, told we had not orderd in the right way...next day orderd how we were told, came out completly wrong,,,fawlty towers came to mind,,,,bed base broke,in fairness replaced quickly

Review 102:location,

Review 103:We were seeing the Moody Blues at the Pavilions & this hotel was booked for it's proximity to the venue & on-site car parking. Bedroom was huge & spotless. Excellent pre-theatre meal at Steve's Brasserie on site. (Best pate & sourdough toast starter ever) Public rooms spacious, beautifully decorated & spotlessly clean. Excellent breakfast served by charming staff. Extremely good value for money.

Review 104:The only thing that would have been good was flannels as well as towels as we had forgotten ours. But we didn't ring and ask for them at reception as we got by, so they may have been able to help on this matter?

Review 105:The room was of a descent size with a good shower and the staff very welcoming. The hotel is in an ideal situation for the theatre and Plymouth pavillions as well as being within 800 metres of the Hoe and city centre.

Review 106:There was a wedding downstairs and it was loud till early in the morning, this didn't bother us as we didn't go to sleep till late but would be annoying for those going to bed early

Review 107:Great location and lady at reception was very helpful and friendly

Review 108:On arrival we were not verbally notified by front of house that our stay didn't include meals. We were initially under the impression that breakfast was included with our stay. However on departure we were informed that we had to pay an additional charge for our breakfasts for two days. This came a surprise and a disappointment. This was discussed with the front of house rep and we were told we should read the small print prior to arrival. Yes that is a rational fact however staff at the hotel should comply to a policy on meet and greet to ensure that all arriving clients are verbally notified of their specific booking entitlements and informed of any additional costs that might be incurred. In this case we were not initially informed. Therefore, as previously stated this was a great disappointment to our party. We left the hotel on the Sunday morning deflated after celebrating a special birthday occasion in France and Plymouth. It would be greatly appreciated if this matter could be investigated and a favourable outcome achieved to compensate for our disappointment. Regards Paul Fairbrother

Review 109:central location to Plymouth and attractions

Review 110:The pool was very tired as were the changing rooms. Our room wasn't as nicely furnished as our friend's room.

Review 111:It was clean and most of the staff were very friendly. It's unintentionally quirky.

Review 112:Nothing

Review 113:As this was my 20th wedding anniversary the hotel and staff went the extra mile to make our stay special. The lady on reception was a credit to the hotel for her politeness and professionalism which makes you want to go back.

Review 114:On this particular visit we think the breakfast staff could have been better!

Review 115:Its a great location and the staff at the front desk are very helpful. The room is comfortable and clean and has plenty of space.

Review 116:In our top floor room there were some problems with water supply and drainage of bath. Rather low levels of lighting in the room made it a bit gloomy on a wet day. A hotel in this price range should supply bigger towels and shampoo rather than the ubiquitous shower gel in dispenser.

Review 117:Friendly staff, convenient city centre location, adequate parking easily operated and reasonably priced. Good breakfast with swift and pleasant service. A good sized room that actually recognised that two people might stay there; i.e. two suitcase racks and two chairs to sit on.

Review 118:Double bed rather than queen/king size. Noise from Wetherspoons meant we couldn't have the window open (double glazing so kept most of the noise out when window closed).

Review 119:Location and modern style hotel.

Review 120:Tv situated next to mirror, can cause a problem when using hairdryer you have to stand in front of tv blocking the view if anyone is watching it. windows rattled when the wind blow.

Review 121:Hotel accommodated for my grandson who requires a glunten free diet.

Review 122:The car park and the outside of the building were tatty. Although the room was big and clean, the decor and bathroom facilities were from a bygone era. The breakfast was of poor quality, particularly the bread used for the toast. It is also unusual these days to get a choice between cooked English breakfast and continental breakfast. Even the term continental is outdated. I had the continental option which was two dry, poor quality croissants served in a plastic basket. The view from the breakfast room window was a messy car park which amongst other rubbish had a skip which was full. Laughably, one of the contents was a bed mattress. There was a lamp in the window right next to me with bare wires showing and a piece of black insulation tape stuck to the window sill. I guess this was the mating half for the lamp. In summary, it all seemed uncared for with the exception of the reception.

Review 123:Very friendly reception staff and impressive looking reception.

Review 124:I stayed here the room was tiny and cheaply furnished. I arrived at 10:30 to find there was no food available - the porter wouldn't even make me a sandwich.

Review 125:The room was far, far too hot. It was not possible to sleep with the window open as the hotel is near a loud nightclub. We ended-up using the (Supplied) fan all night. Not much breakfast choice.

Review 126:Located next to Pavilions.

Review 127:The spa facilities were not up to standard. The sauna wasn't working and even if it was the door was broken so didn't close properly. The stream room was ok but there was no jacuzzi, and the small swimming pool had children's swimming lessons being held in it which put us off using it as we felt we were disturbing their lessons.

Review 128:The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The hotel was clean and tidy, not as glamorous as I'd expected but more than adequate.

Review 129:We had a warm welcome and the location of the hotel was excellent as we were going to watch a show at the pavilions. Had a great meal in the brasserie.

Review 130:nothing

Review 131:The staff were so friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean, comfortable and the location was brilliant. there was a wedding going on when we arrived and we were worried that it might be noisy but our room was on the 4th floor and was very quiet.

Review 132:Breakfast very poor standard to holiday inn which is where I should have gone

Review 133:Close to all around ie clubs pubs Barbican. bed comfortable. Reception staff very nice

Review 134:Person cleaning the room was very miserable which was a shame as reception staff were lovely. I asked for a room for 3 adults but was only given the option of a double and single room. Was most annoyed to find when we got there that we could all have stayed in one room. This was a booking.com fault rather than the hitel

Review 135:Close to the Hoe. Lovely gym facility. Room very comfortable

The Fine Print

Please note, Steve's Brasserie will be closed from Wednesday 30 December 2015 until Saturday 2 January 2016.
