Reviews for Mackays Hotel
Review 1:Although the wi-fi was free it was a shame the strength of the signal fluctuated.
Review 2:Traditional feel with a traditional Scottish welcome. The food was superb and the staff friendly and helpful - and I was lucky enough to get a room with a view over the river. No excuse needed to sit in the armchair watching the wildlife on the river. The hotel has produced a handy guide to the area (booklet in the room) which is worth a read.
Review 3:Breakfast was terrible. Took ages to serve and when it arrived we obviously got what was left. Bacon was hard, black pudding overlooked and egg was solid. What a let down
Review 4:Location was super, riims lovely and perfect for a one night stay .
Review 5:Not really a bad experience but we asked for a double bed and were given two single beds, however the view looking over the river made up for it!
Review 6:Good hotels are hard to find in Scotland however we found this small hotel very clean with excellent food which suited us for our short stay in Wick and very good value for money.
Review 7:Some reviews had concerned us that the street outside the hotel could be noisy, but we had absolutely no issues with this at all - and I'm normally effected by things like that. Staff were great, and food in the restaurant was very enjoyable.
Review 8:Nothing to complain about considering location not really on the " beaten track"
Review 9:Service was excellent and staff very friendly. Food in the Bistro of highest and sourced locally. Rooms very clean if somewhat dated . But not an issue .
Review 10:Restaurant was nice enough, but only one vegetarian option which was good but not amazing. Breakfast was nice though, and the restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. Polite and friendly waiting staff as well, so not really a negative as such.
Review 11:Friendly, welcoming atmosphere; helpful staff; good size room; convenient for getting to John O'Groats; clean and comfortable.
Review 12:Room decor very stylish! Comfortable bed and luxurious bedding. Only spent one night but will be back again! The room we were in has been upgraded hopefully all the rooms in the hotel are up to this standard. Fabulous!
Review 13:Wick itself is not particularly attractive although there is some interest. Very limited choice in restaurant menu. Problem with ineffective working of shower not really addressed.
Review 14:Good food. Generally comfortable. Friendly staff. Convenient location.
Review 15:Treated so well by everyone and offered suggestions of how to make our stay even better
Review 16:I found the location excellent all within walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants
Review 17:Central location easy parking and fabulous food. We were persuaded to try Caithness gin and would highly recommend it!
Review 18:The staff was extremely friendly and the restaurant was the best in town.
Review 19:Very clean, comfortable, good food and friendly, helpful staff.

Review 25:No complaints at all.
Review 26:Comfortable room. Breakfast . Service .
Review 27:Nothing really - slightly dated decor
Review 28:The No 1 Restaurant The in room facilities The No 1 Restaurant The staff The No 1 Restaurant The breakfast
Review 29:The staff were excellent!
Review 30:The bedroom was very old fashioned and the double bed was small and uncomfortable. My wife and I were unable to both get in the lift with our luggage to the 2nd floor
Review 31:The restaurant staff were very good
Review 32:I really couldn't fault anything about the hotel. The lack of leisure facilities on-site might put people off but apart from that it was fantastic.
Review 33:This is a lovely hotel - friendly staff, gorgeous food and the rooms were modern and comfortable.
Review 34:We really enjoyed our stay. The location, overlooking the river, is impressive, especially when the tide is in. The food - including the restaurant food - was excellent, and the staff were consistently friendly.
Review 35:half a loo roll insufficient. bedside lights not great for reading. a bit short on sharp knife/serving spoon type kitchen gear. scented airfresh in stair would be nice. Somebody should strim the back garden to make the place look more loved.
Review 36:Staff very nice, ideal location, restuarant very good and appeared like an oasis in an otherwise disappointing town centre. parking easy place looks generally clean/modern with adequate coothiness.
Review 37:Rooms were a bit small.
Review 38:Good facilities with a nice restaurant. Beds were comfortable. The staff was very nice and helpful. We used Wick as a base for exploring northern Scotland and Orkney. We spent very little time in Wick itself. Convenient and free on street parking.
Review 39:The old lift got stuck between floors just pressed button and went up to the next floor got a bit of a fright used stairs after that
Review 40:Great welcome nice large room clean tidy
Review 41:Nothing I can think of I did not like
Review 42:Quality of room, staff, food, general atmosphere of quality without stuffiness; committed to the well being of the town and making Mackays as far as I could see, one of the best, if not the best hotel in Caithness.
Review 43:From the moment we arrived Murray, Ellie and all the staff really looked after us. Our room was first class offering excellent views over the local harbour. I wouldn't hesitate staying here again and would highly recommend it to any traveller :-)
Review 44:Completely dated bathrooms. Horrid shower curtain. No double glazing. Street parking. Noisy and non segregated wedding event
Review 45:Some rooms are refurbished. Breakfast. Bistro. Enthusiastic staff.
Review 46:the bedroom was very small also very very hot woke up needing air. also a lot of noise from people and gulls outside hotel in middle of night and boys in cars going up and down road most of night
Review 47:food was very good
Review 48:Staff were polite and tried to please, but need further training. Room just refurbished and smelled of paint.
Review 49:Location quite close to station and harbour. Good food. Owner attentive.
Review 50:We were on a trip to see the countryside, towns and villages of Sutherland and Caithness. Mackays was a very comfortable place to stay overnight. The staff were very friendly, the food very good and the service excellent.
Review 51:The lift wasn't working but then that's just part of life and what can happen at any time in the tourist industry. Not the fault of the hotel just annoying to have to walk up the stairs all the time.
Review 52:The staff we vert good at their job and made you feel quiet at home. The food in the No 1 Bistro was excellent with a nice choice of food. The 'on the house' dram at the end of the meal was a very nice touch.
Review 53:Nothing
Review 54:We were welcomed at the hotel and all members of staff were outstanding. Our room was large and overlooking the water with plenty of amenities. We were persuaded to eat in the evening and the meal was excellent with complimentary liqueurs. we were allowed to stow luggage after check out as our train was 2 hrs later. We unreservedly recommend this hotel if you need to stay in Wick. It is 3 minutes' walk from the rail station if - like us - you tour by rail which is very feasible.
Review 55:Parking is only out on the street.
Review 56:It was a nice old hotel out of the past. The staff was very helpful and the room big and nostalgic. The location wasn't perfect, between two streets in a triangle, but we slept well. It is a family operation which we like.
Review 57:Food was good but could have had a bit more on the plates of some dishes
Review 58:Very friendly atmosphere.Just like a family run hotel.Felt at home the moment you arrived, If and when back in Wick its where we would stay.
Review 59:Evening meal was poor and not worth the wait or the cost. All a bit average, under the pretence of a new modern bistro. Disappointing.
Review 60:The bedroom was excellent. Clean and well furnished and obviously recently modernised. Well done, it looked and felt very good. Reception staff and manager were very helpful and welcoming. Good breakfast.
Review 61:We are former Caithness residents and had previosuly had a good meal at the Bistro. Sadly the hotel now seems to be trading on former glories. The downstairs decor is good but the lift is antiquated and our room was on the third floor - with an elecric heater that you had to crawl under the desk to operate. The bed was good. There was no heating to the bathroom which was therefore freezing. The dinner was expensive and the quality did not match the price. We were offered a single slice of dry bread. The service was not a great experience also. Breakfast was not much better. The protions were small and the food rather tasteless. Again a single slice of toast was the ration. We booked there for a birthday treat. It was a disappointing and costly experience and we would not stay there again.
Review 62:Very nice receptionist - made sure that we knew where to go and was generally welcomming.
Review 63:Nothing of any significance
Review 64:Very friendly staff. The restaurant served a very good steak and the service was excellent. The breakfast was first rate too. The bed was very comfortable. We were happy we chose The Mackay's Hotel
Review 65:We love thus hotel and always stay here when we are in Wick. The food is to die for.
Review 66:Food - excellent dinner - steak to die for. Breakfast - the best on our trip. Friendly, helpful staff.
Review 67:The room looked newly refurbished, and had a very large bathroom. The food was outstanding.
Review 68:A very clean comfortable hotel with friendly staff and lovely meals
Review 69:Not much
Review 70:Food was fabulous. Staff so pleasant and very smart too. So near train station and nice walk to town centre. We will go back
Review 71:No parking lot, you just have to park your car on the street. Service was poor.
Review 72:Nothing special.
