Reviews for Best Western Duke Of Cornwall Hotel

Review 1:Not really bad, but room chilly.Could have done with a little more warmth

Review 2:Car parking facility.Had only breakfast (as previosly), which was very pleasant. VG food staff very helpful and attentive. Not there long enough to answer questions here

Review 3:Smoking policy - and yes, I do realise there is nothing you can do about that 8-(

Review 4:Location, close to both Barbican and 'downtown'. And many thanks for the smokers' shelter.

Review 5:Room extremely dated, very disappointed. No wardrobe doors, damp on the wall, wallpaper falling off, bathroom very old and took 40 mins to run a bath !

Review 6:Excellent location and lovely building.

Review 7:Spacious well appointed hotel in a great location. Dining room light and airy with an excellent choice of breakfasts. All the staff we met were friendly, helpful and efficient.

Review 8:The hotel opened in 1863 - we can tell because the bath towel [so frayed around the edges that we thought it was a fringe] looked as if it dated from the opening day. And, 48 inches by 24 inches is, in the opinion of many, not large enough to qualify as a bath towel.

Review 9:Wonderful building with character

Review 10:The car park was too small, the lift was far too small,& our room was even smaller! Shabby decor quaint & old fashioned! The bathroom was a joke!

Review 11:Bedroom was dirty, one bed had a broken base, towels flat and threadbare. If you didn't want to eat in the main restaurant, the alternative was to eat in the bar on low tables. Parking non existent. We dare not move the car once we had a space, so we got a taxi everywhere we wanted to go. No disabled parking spaces. Access to hotel from the car park over a slippery iron bridge.

Review 12:Large bedroom

Review 13:Paid extra for a premium room. Although large it was on the first floor over a very busy street and being a 'period' house had no double glazing. Sleep disturbed by noise outside. Not the best value for money.

Review 14:Very friendly courteous staff. Close to city centre and waterfront. Beautiful lounge, dining room, reception areas.

Review 15:The bathroom could have been cleaner and I think the carpet in the bedroom would benefit from a shampoo.

Review 16:Attended a Christmas do in the hotel. Room quite large. Nicely decorated. Porridge in the morning was lush.

Review 17:Only that you couldn't get anything to eat after 10pm

Review 18:The staff were welcoming. Room 104 was an excellent room. The hotel was in a brilliant position for the pavilions

Review 19:Lack of parking but understandable.

Review 20:have always had a soft spot for the hotel and its history. Try to stay there whenever money dictates. Lovely to see the same staff over the years and always feel very special when we are there.

Review 21:Tatty towels, not enough pillows and kettle which wouldn't stay on

Review 22:Perfect for Plymouth pavilions and city centre. Small but comfy room and big bathroom. Overlooked fire escape so no view but not really a concern for us.

Review 23:It was very windy and due to no double glasing it was fairly cold and most of all very loud all night.

Review 24:Lovely staff and view was excellent. Very good on location as the pavilions is just across the road.

Review 25:really thin pillows!

Review 26:location is perfect, lovely old building, good cooked breakfast. The opportunity for sea view is probably there, but not from our room.

Review 27:A bit tired in places but upgrade in process

Review 28:location to Plymouth pavilions for concert, great staff & breakfast. Free Parking. Beautiful, historic building

Review 29:Noisy until 4 o'clock in the morning. I was on 1st floor, so had a do in the main hall, followed by couples arguing, followed by kick out from night club, with further arguing. Managed about 3 hours continuous sleep

Review 30:beautiful building

Review 31:Our room was small and next to the lift so if we left the bathroom door open we could hear it. The room was tired and the bathroom had damp patches. The shower was difficult to regulate and hard to turn the taps off.

Review 32:The location. The bar area and entrance areas were very nice.

Review 33:Had to swap rooms as mattress had collapsed on bed. No wardrobe or drawers for clothes just an open place to hang coats, so lived out of our bags. Not what we expected from such a grand place. Bathroom small & shower very awkward to get the right temperature.

Review 34:Lovely building. very clean, good Wi-Fi. nice view of the sea, Walking distance to city centre & the sea front, but still very quiet.

Review 35:Lack of Wi-Fi in the room

Review 36:The4 location was perfect as we were attending a concert at the venue across the road. The overall appearance of the hotel was sumptuous elegance; our room was spacious and had great views; the staff were all helpful, attentive and welcoming and the breakfast was perfect in both choice and flavour.

Review 37:Staff is not trained, Room was full of smoke smell and ash. On check-in we requested if you can put both single beds together but we were told we CAN'T, as the way these beds are. when we went upstairs it took us 5 mins to do, giving us an impression that staff don't care at all. Room standard was not even 1 star they claimed to be having 3 stars. Agreed on 3 stars up until 2nd floor after that it's just an old style hotel with less 1 star standard. Disappointed.... :(

Review 38:Only think we liked is Location

Review 39:We travel to Plymouth twice a year; we find the location suits us well; we have got to know some of the staff; it is just perfect for our two short breaks in the year.

Review 40:N/a

Review 41:Very Good food especially the evening meal. Friendly compatant staff in a hotel well positioned and full of history Free parking and wifi Would like to thank all the staff for a great little break

Review 42:Surly reception staff on arrival and departure (same person) Very uncomfortable beds, far too soft and lumpy. Shabby rooms with peeling paint and wallpaper and a layer of dust along the skirting and sockets

Review 43:Beautiful old building with the potential to be a lovely hotel. Breakfast was good and the staff serving breakfast were lovely.

Review 44:Noise of people coming in during the night, shouting up through the corridor.

Review 45:Liked the hotel, staff extremely helpful. Especially the kind young man who helped to jump start our vehicle. Many thanks to him.

Review 46:I am 6'4" and I struggled to get under the shower. The rooms were spacious, but the wood floors were slippy and noisy. You could hear people on other floors walking about

Review 47:The breakfast was very good and staff very attentive and helpful. Very close to the pavilion complex

Review 48:Bed could have been more comfortable, felt a new mattress would have helped.

Review 49:Staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much for them. Hotel has kept its original feel.

Review 50:Stayed many times but this was not so good. Music that went on til nearly 1am because of function downstairs. Very slow check out only 1 member of staff for a full hotel.

Review 51:Comfy bed, large shower, great breakfast

Review 52:Parking was limited and so we had to park on the street, which is free from 4pm-10am but then incurred a charge. When we asked about parking to staff and tried to get a feel for a good time when spaces may free up so to move the car the staff member stated 'I'd rather not say.' as if we were asking her to sign a legally binding contract when in fact we just wanted a tip. This felt a little unhelpful. Also check out is at 11am but the housekeeping knocked on our door 3 times between 9 and 11 to check if we had gone so they could clean. I guess this is due to being able to check out by dropping your key in a slot rather than doing so manually, but it was quite frustrating as they attempted to enter the first time due to no reply, which was as we were still asleep.

Review 53:Location was excellent as it was nice and central. Ideal for going to the Hoe and the Barbican.

Review 54:Breakfast buffet should be refilled e.g. One morning all fruit yoghurt had been used. Could have asked for more but it would have been much nicer if more had been put on table without being requested.

Review 55:Obliging staff who always did their best to help. Very clean, comfortable room. Lovely food-can recommend haddock for breakfast.

Review 56:I had been given the impression that there would be plenty of car parking space. This was not correct. The hotel was quite full being a Saturday night and there was a wedding reception taking place. Therefore the car park was full and Guests were directed to park in the adjacent road which I did. That night my car was broken into. Other guests also had damage done to their cars in the hotel car park. The location is on a main roundabout with intermittent traffic noise all night

Review 57:The Breakfast!

Review 58:Staff were friendly and helpful, excellent location for the Hoe for graduation ceremony, room was comfortable, car parking was available and easy access of 1st floor

Review 59:There was quite a bit of noise mainly from traffic passing by which disturbed our sleep. The room was also very hot even when the radiators were turned down, so maybe that could be looked at.

Review 60:Closeness to a variety of places to eat and ease of travel to our final destination HMS Raleigh. The staff were really friendly and breakfast just right.

Review 61:Lack of draw space in the bedroom and only one small shelf in the bathroom. Had to leave my toiletries on the bedside table. Staff a little indifferent - not all but some - it's just a job. Breakfast menu said 'fresh and natural fruit' - melon was the only fresh, grapefruit and mandarin oranges out of a tin, cooked breakfast fried and greasy. Location noisy - not their fault but late night noise from a nearby pub and busy road if you're at the front of the hotel.

Review 62:Deluxe room really spacious and very comfortable

Review 63:Bed was not really comfy and the car park is very small luckily someoneleft so I was able to get a space. Didn't like the gross, stickyroom service card - really they should be replaced and why doeseverything seem to cost £10.50 or more?

Review 64:Cleanliness and decoration lovely cooked to order breakfast plus helpfulreceptionist.

Review 65:Car park not too large, but we got a space ok

Review 66:Proximity to Plymouth Pavilions, upgraded to superior room and had our own living room, excellent breakfast included, room was huge, tea, coffee and chocolate in room.

Review 67:The only niggle we had was with the shower - really low pressure and took an age to get the temperature right.

Review 68:Brilliant location for Plymouth Pavilions - just across the road. Beautifully old fashioned but plush decor.

Review 69:Old style comfort. Like stepping back in time but with all modern facilities. Lovely comfortable bedroom. Lovely bathroom. Flat screen TV with lots of channels WiFi Lift and some parking Friendly Staff

Review 70:Brilliant location as it was within yards of The Pavilions where I was singing. Very pleasant receptionist. Excellent to be able to park my car on site.

Review 71:We could hear the floorboards creek in the room above us The breakfast was too expensive for what it was

Review 72:Good location, friendly staff and comfortable room

Review 73:The hotel was handily placed for our travels and yet was not surrounded by metropolitan crowds and buildings. The car park was small yet the day we stayed the space was ample. The traditional breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious. The old building had much character and I believe was originally part of the railway station.

Review 74:Because of influx of a lot of new guests, we waited over 1 hour when seated for first evening meal. Did not bother to eat there in evenings for rest of stay.

Review 75:Friendly,helpful staff(too few though!)

Review 76:Requested a double room and got a twin with the single beds pushed together, but made up to look like a double. The shower was a bit weak, and the shower screen was dislodged causing it to leak on to the floor. Room windows were filthy.

Review 77:Location (in relation to the gig venue), Room décor, Character, warm welcome and good service, lovely room layout with a sitting room - very spacious.

Review 78:I had a single room on the 5th floor. Room was very small with stains on the carpet, ripped and faded wallpaper. Normally stay in Premier inns and for the same price rooms are much better value for money, ie double and kept better.

Review 79:Food was good and staff excellent

Review 80:The car park was packed solid so we had to park on the street - it was free until 10am so we ate breakfast and scarpered. Also the hotel is 'tired' in the sense its borderline on the refurbishment/upgrade level - the rooms are 'classic' in terms of the design, but they are on the cusp of becoming dated, the novelty of the period decor wears off quite quickly as you realise just how old some of the room furniture really is....

Review 81:The staff and the general ambiance of the hotel is very nice - its a grand old building with lots of character and charm and the location is perfect for proximity to town and sea.

Review 82:If I really had to pick something it would be that the room service was a little slow but the hotel was compleatly full and it didn't cause me a problem.

Review 83:The whole experience was fantastic from check in to check out.

Review 84:Decor could do with freshening up, little more attention to detail on cleaning, dusty bathroom, past guests hairs on carpet

Review 85:Style of the Victoria building, free wifi good breakfast

Review 86:The shower splashed onto the floor a lot but otherwise no problems.

Review 87:Everything was just perfect for me. The room was the best single room I've ever stayed in. Breakfast was sumptuous and excellently cooked. Looking forward to another stay at the Duke of Cornwall

Review 88:Very expensive for the room I had,,it was very tired, had damp patches on walls, paper hanging off in the bathroom, shower over the bath ,unable to adjust,,not over easy to climb in,,

Review 89:Staff were lovely

Review 90:Our room was nice but old and in need of maintenance. eg. Bathroom door handle feel off the first time it was used. The toilet took so long to re- fill we used the first floor facilities more than our room. The pillows where flat and definetly need to be up graded. Room service was confusing as they have 2 soups of the day from different menus and even though I ordered from the menu in my room both times I did not get the same soup. First place I have ever been to that has more than one "soup of the day".

Review 91:Location, ambience of hotel and dining areas. Available parking in their car park or back steet which was ok and nearby. Breakfast was very nice and cooked to order.

Review 92:We were given Room 410 - fine. When sat on bed the mattress was ridiculously noisy and needed replacing .

Review 93:After ringing reception re mattress the deputy manager arrived almost immediately and moved us to another room - excellent customer service and great bed.

Review 94:The only lift is small and a bit erratic.

Review 95:Stayed twice both before and after ferry to Brittany. Both bedrooms were spacious and comfortable with two easy chairs and bathrooms large and everything worked. The corridors are wide and well appointed. The whole hotel felt elegant.

Review 96:Two of three lights by bed not working, electronic door release took several tries from the key card to work and other guests reported same problem. Shower cubicle almost too small to turn round in!

Review 97:Friendly welcome, room fairly recently decorated it seemed. Comfortable bed.

Review 98:Rowdy wedding party!

Review 99:We were sat at breakfast next to the Snooker players that we had travelled to watch the night before! Breakfast and room were very good.

Review 100:I booked this for my son and new wife on their wedding night and they couldn't have a shower as there was know hot water

Review 101:The room was. Very spacious and clean breakfast was great.

Review 102:Although the bedroom had some modern improvements; e.g.new central light and modern shower fitting, slim tv ,the décor was shabby, the wall paper torn and in desperate need of replacement for the price charged.Room317

Review 103:Close proximity to the Hoe and the Dome. The beautiful, refurbished dining room The breakfast meal. A lovely architectural beauty -from the outside. No wonder Sir Earnest Shackleton stayed there !!

Review 104:The wedding events appeared to take up all staff time. More staff required at these times.

Review 105:Excellent location for the city centre, the hoe, the barbican and road network. Clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend go back.

Review 106:Bit of a problem getting into the hotel through the car park door....and no space for car in the car park though the free on street parking was ok. It could have been a problem if we'd have been staying longer than one night.

Review 107:I love the stairs (shame about the wooden/glass partitions) and the decor. Excellently run breakfast room. The room was large, comfy and with an excellent shower.

Review 108:Our room was small for the money. It wasn't all that clean. dusty in the bedroom and the bathroom was pokey with wallpaper peeling and the bath/shower lining coming away. Tea and coffee supply was barely adequate. Upstairs corridors were decoratively tired.

Review 109:The public spaces were lovely, relaxing, and welcoming. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 110:Bedroom was awful long and narrow small window looking over back walk way fans and smoking area so when the wind is blowing in the right direction the smoke comes into the bedroom. Room was very hot and depressing, asked if we could move but they said the hotel was full, they did give us a fan but didn't make a lot of difference. The mattresses on the bed really needs to be changed as when you sat on it the top of the mattresses touched the bottom. All in all we were glad to leave.

Review 111:Breakfast was good, staff were friendly. Location was good.

Review 112:Stained wallpaper. Creaky floorboards and noisy plumbing woke me up. Hotel was good but overpriced, given that breakfast wasn't included.

Review 113:Good range of additional services

Review 114:The decor is now getting very "tired". There was some sort of incident on my floor during the night causing a disturbed night. As with most hotels, the single room was very small. The hotel is not good value.

Review 115:The staff were very efficient and friendly. Breakfast was good, especially as they offered a gluten free option (I am coeliac).

Review 116:we liked the architectural style of the hotel which had lots of original features, preferable and more interesting than the bland layout / décor of the more modern hotels. The top floor room we were originally checked into did not have a good view - the staff helpfully and quickly switched us to another. we would recommend guests try to avoid top floor rooms. The location was within easy walking distance of everything we wanted to see during our short break in Plymouth.

Review 117:Think reception staff could do with smartening up a little.car park very small.

Review 118:Great location, breakfast was lovely with a good choice. Very spacious and clean room.

Review 119:The right hand side of the bed in room 414 has collapsed

Review 120:Nice bar area food was well priced and good quality. Staff friendly and happy to help check in/out fast and efficient

Review 121:Mixed opinions on staff , one lady was very helpful when we first arrived then when we came back it was someone different and she was very abrupt ! We only had one milk and one coffee sachet in our room and when my husband asked for a couple more she practically threw several of each at him .Cleanliness of bathroom was nt great , some mould in the shower and general areas need tidying up ! It's such a shame as the hotel has so much character.

Review 122:We came back to the hotel as this was where we had our wedding reception and thought it would perfect to celebrate my husbands 40th there! As we had lots of happy memories.

Review 123:The chef needs a lesson on how to cook porridge - there was no salt and it needed to be cooked slowly for c. 5 minutes after bringing to the boil in order for the oat grains to melt into each other. It needs renovation to modernise many basic features in the common parts such as the lift access to the upper floors.

Review 124:Nothing bad but decor a little tired. A beautiful building though.

Review 125:The young lady on reception when we arrived was great. She helped us in several ways and is a credit to the hotel.

Review 126:The parking was poor and the staff at the front desk were miserable - unfriendly and unwelcoming.

Review 127:Location was great. The hotel was beautiful. The staff who looked after us at breakfast were very friendly and welcoming.

Review 128:Shower was not suitable because it had a fixed shower head (it was outdated) and I could not use the bath either.

Review 129:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Food very good. Hotel was in a perfect location for shopping, visiting the Hoe and Barbican.

Review 130:Would need a fan if the weather was very hot and towels could be fluffier.

Review 131:Very welcoming staff, excellent Maitre D in restaurant, nothing was a problem for her. Lovely bedroom, great bed. Breakfast excellent as was the evening meal we had. Far superior overall than The Grand in Brighton.

Review 132:We had a front room and the curtains didn`t meet, so light and noise was a problem. Car parking was hard to get late in the day/evening.

Review 133:Good sized room, with extra sitting area. Close to centre of town. Car parking available. Breakfast was wonderful.

Review 134:I think the value of the room is overpriced since their was no amenities to enjoy when we booked in . Very little choice on evening menu unless your into wood pigeon and truffled mash ? We were offered bar snack menu to order from and enjoyed our steak.

Review 135:The room was adequate for sleeping . Our bed on the other hand was amazing and the bedding pure quality ! The decor blew us away and had a beautiful view of Mount Edgecombe , Classic British hotel .... stunning! Friendly Helpful Staff!

Review 136:This is the second time my friend and I have stayed here.Ideal for everything,The Barbican, shopping etc,Staff are first class. Will be back next year.

Review 137:Bed was a bit squeaky and dipped in the middle. Floors squeaked but then it is 150 years old

Review 138:lovely staff, room very clean breakfast was excellent really great choices. Free parking which in Plymouth is a bonus.

Review 139:Bathroom was rather small.T

Review 140:We loved our room which was directly below the tower suite. It was full of character, decor suited the building style and the views were superb. The breakfasts were the best we encountered on our trip.
