Reviews for Stanwell House Hotel
Review 1:No breakfast although advertised as included on tariff card. Expensive compared with Harbour Hotel in Christchurch. Poor Bedroom lighting & creaky floors. Access to upper floors narrow & no lift
Review 2:Location, nice bar
Review 3:So noisy! Loud creaks every time people moved in room upstairs, in the corridors and no sound insulation from High St.
Review 4:Great location, fab decor, proper coffee in room, free wi-fi, free parking
Review 5:Staff can be very slow at serving !! The bar could be making a lot more money if staff were on top of serving drinks !! Queues lining up !! The bar should be set up with all drinks and ice buckets lemons limes . Lymington needs a nice cocktail bar wine bar in relaxing environment and stanwells could provide this.
Review 6:Amazing hotel just need the finishing touches of the rooms
Review 7:The room did not meet our expectations or looked anything like what is shown on the website. The room was small, stuffy and noisy, up at least 4 flights of stairs. Dirty windows looking out onto a pretty poor view of cluttered rooftops. When next door went to loo, woke us up, doors banged when other guest went in or out. We called to say we were arriving late. When we arrived there was no parking available, told to go to long stay car park!!!!! at our expense. There was no Wi-Fi in our room, signal did not reach. So we were told we had Wi-Fi - wrong We were told we had parking - wrong We had to get up early to go and move the car before it was ticketed, I could not process orders as no Wi-Fi. For us it was just a glorified pub dressed up as a "Boutique hotel". Certainly not worth the £145 room only rate. Ruined our stay completely and mis-represented on your site.
Review 8:Not a lot
Review 9:Bathroom was rather basic and old fashioned but was clean. Thought our stay was a little expensive as the hotel, though charming is a little tired in places
Review 10:Location was brilliant which is why we chose this hotel. Staff delightful
Review 11:I liked the warm welcome we received on arrival. They really couldn't have been more helpful. Also the old world charm, which is missing from so many hotels these days.
Review 12:Dreadful! Avoid at all costs. Find somewhere else but don’t stay here! A real rip-off. Absolutely no consideration for their guest’s “customer experience”. We got off to a bad start. On checking-in we were told the £145.00 B&B rate we had paid in advance did not include breakfast – for which the hotel wanted another £12.50 + VAT per person. (so the real B&B rate is £175.00) We explained this had not been clear on the Booking.com confirmation, whereupon the duty manger thrust her copy of the details into our face and said “if you can’t afford it, would you like us to find you somewhere else?” We asked if a cheaper Continental breakfast was option was available which it wasn’t. Stunned and insulted by the lack of courtesy we were shown up three flights of stairs (there is no lift) by the receptionist who apologised profusely for the rudeness of the duty manageress to a hot little garret room (room 31) facing the noisy High Street, where we had to constantly stoop because the ceilings were so low. Elsewhere that room would be worth £70.00 per night maximum (including breakfast). After a bad night’s sleep, we left the following morning without breakfast and feeling insulted, cheated and totally disillusioned. A horrendous experience which ruined what was meant to be a nice break at a boutique in the New Forest. Awful. These people need to take lessons in understanding guests and offering true “hospitality” (and fire the manageress). A textbook case of how not to treat people. Totally disgusted!
Review 13:2 of the ladies in our group of 4 had to ask to change rooms as theirs weren't an acceptable standard. The receptionist who dealt with them was of the utmost help and upgraded them to much better rooms.
Review 14:Had a wonderful evening meal in the hotel and the staff were very helpful.
Review 15:Bed too soft for my liking..three flights of old staircase with different level landings in between. Not suitable for those walking difficulties.
Review 16:Restaurant evening meal superb.
Review 17:No Lift and stairs very cumbersome. Pillows on the bed are very soft.
Review 18:Staff very nice and efficient. Food is excellent. Room was nice and location is excellent.
Review 19:That you had next to no car park. I do not expect to have to pay for parking my car. I know I did have a space this time but it was lucky.
Review 20:The friendly staff
Review 21:They did not have plug adaptors for continental europe travellers You can not smoke even outside in the garden ! You had to go out like an outcast...
Review 22:Its location and cozyness. We have been coming back for the last 20 years, I guess !
Review 23:breakfast selection was very poor - tinned fruit - no fresh apart from a banana. Orange juice was poor quality. I had identified that I needed gluten free and soya free diet when booking - waitress brought a jug of soya milk for me! The only thing I could eat for breakfast was a couple of slices of cheese and a banana and a boiled egg - not a good selection . This is the second stay where it has been below expectations - we have stayed regularly over the last 12 years and have noticed the deterioration. Room: - Windows were dirty especially the paintwork. - The water bottle available was very small for 2 - Decor generally looks dated and tired - shower was very poor and water did not keep to temperature - oscillated between being either scalding or cold
Review 24:location
Review 25:Downstairs front facing room poor
Review 26:Stanwell House is well located on the High Street. Be aware that when you book they take a non returnable deposit. Avoid the standard rooms on the front of the hotel they are noisy small and require updating. Try and get a bed and breakfast rate as buying separately is costly. Generally a good stay Egans restaurant is fantastic
Review 27:The staff at the reception couldn't have been more helpful and understanding of our situation. They arranged to change our room at late notice as my friend being an asthmatic needed to have a window which we could open wide at night.
Review 28:Really noisy room overlooking the High street. We were told that we were upgraded to a four poster room. The room did have a four poster but was small, very hot and too noisy with the windows open. Also on checking out we were told that if we had booked direct breakfast would have been included but as we went through booking.com it wasn't so we paid an additional £50 over 2 days for breakfast bringing a two night stay in a noisy, hot shoe box of a room to £345!
Review 29:Decor and location were good as was the food.
Review 30:hit or miss carpark our room was subject to noise some the fault of the hotel carpet chairs bath worse for wear hot and window wouldnt open properly black towels leaked dye badly no breakfast if booked on and hugely expensive for standard of the hotel and unclear at time of booking fab breakfast up the road for a lot less than half cancellation was not poss without penalty sorry not to good
Review 31:Parking could be a bit difficult. Front bar lacks character and warmth, US style Sports Bar would work better.
Review 32:Friendly Clean Nicely decorated Quality finish everywhere SMALL private car park Good staff
Review 33:The table tops in the front dining room. Pillows
Review 34:Nothing to be fair
Review 35:Great hotel and staff were great
Review 36:Pillows were to soft, lack of storage space
Review 37:Car parking is difficult to find and away from the hotel making it difficult to transfer luggage.
Review 38:Happy and friendly staff. Garden rooms very quiet.
Review 39:poor bar. cramped bedroom. too expensive
Review 40:Bed just a little on soft side for me.
Review 41:Friendly, comfortable with excellent service.
Review 42:Over priced
Review 43:Fabulous helpful staff
Review 44:Overpriced food and drink
Review 45:Location, smart reception areas
Review 46:Bed and room was lovely - we had a suite. Excellent seafood restaurant.
Review 47:Staff sometimes too formal
Review 48:The quality ofthe food and the cleanliness
Review 49:The fact you cannot cancel booking
Review 50:The garden for our dog
Review 51:Nothing I can think of?
Review 52:Friendly staff Lovely room Clean Very good breakfast Free parking
Review 53:The four poster bed was quite old and could have been more comfortable.
Review 54:Very friendly and helpful staff
Review 55:Nothing
Review 56:Really friendly staff, welcoming and genuinely happy to help! Breakfast was the best I've had in a long time. Great.
Review 57:Parking
Review 58:Location
Review 59:Nice quite room Very comfy and we had our Two dogs with us and they where also fussed over by the staff.
Review 60:Pillows
Review 61:Location, service
Review 62:I have now stayed at this hotel numerous times as it is convenient for me. Too many of the rooms are however poky with poor facilities and woe betide you if you are in a room on the top floor. You get poor water supply and are unable to stand up without banging your head. Overall this hotel is not worth the price it charges.
Review 63:Ideally placed for Lymington High Street
Review 64:Twin beds were child size! I have never before stayed in a hotel and been offered a 2'6" bed.Mattresses not the best either. V poor nights sleep
Review 65:Food of a high standard though expensive.
Review 66:The wireless internet barely worked in our rooms as the signal was so low, which was disappointing.
Review 67:Room was lovely and food was delicious. It is also in the perfect location in Lymington. Also as there were no more car parking spaces left they kindly sent someone to put a ticket on our car in the pay and display area.
Review 68:Had to leave at the end of the stay :(
Review 69:Lovely Hotel, very Quiet and in one of our favourite places on the Planet. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 70:We had a wonderful relaxing time in this beautiful hotel. Very friendly staff, gorgeous food, we tried breakfast lunch and dinner all superb. We'll definitely be back.
Review 71:Our stay was far too short! Bathroom could have been a little bigger.
Review 72:The welcome we received from the Receptionist, the ambience of the hotel, all of the staff smiled and were helpful. The room itself was beautifully appointed.
Review 73:The parking and unloading arrangements were a hassle thanks to a town council, who do not seem to support their local hotels!
Review 74:It was relaxed, old fashioned, in the center of Lymington, quiet and had a garden area where you could sit out
Review 75:Room 14 had a rock hard mattress. Water in the shower was inconsistent, very hot to ice cold with little pressure. TV would not work on the final morning which is only a minor issue . Breakfast service was poor at best both mornings but the final morning we had to walk out after waiting 15 mintues for our coffee and tea. My wife requested assistance and was still ignored. Not a huge issue as we had a quick breakfast a few doors down. When checking out we were not even asked how our stay was. I do feel that the hotel is not worth 135 pounds per night for a basic but clean room and full breakfast for two. Luckily our stay at the Stanwell was in the middle of our trip or we would have been very annoyed.
Review 76:Terrific location for visiting the New Forest or the Isle of Wight ferry. Clean and contemporary room design. Most helpful and friendly at time of check in. Several restaurants on the high street. Quiet.
Review 77:A little over priced as regards the room and some items on the menu.
Review 78:The ambience is good and the staff friendly and helpful. It is extremely conveniently placed for the town as regards shops and places of interest.
Review 79:Bedroom carpet a little shabby.
Review 80:Friendly very helpful staff who go to great trouble to make your staygood. The central position of the hotel is great for Lymington shoppingand Marina and 1 mile from the Ferry to the iow. The dining arrangementsand bar were excellent and superb food along with seafood restaurant andchoice of Tapas.
Review 81:The car park, we got stuck in the gravel on thevslope which meant our stay began with pushing it out! Not a good start!
Review 82:The relaxed and friendly atmosphere in lovely surroundings.
Review 83:the baths were not great to shower in as they seemed A little narrow and the food A little pricey
Review 84:the hotel setting itself is lovely. the rooms are nice, the gardens relaxing and the food excellent. the staff from the reception to the waiting staff and housekeeping were all very friendly and all very helpful
Review 85:Headboard over bed - a ledge meets one's head exactly in the most comfortable position for watching TV, and a padded headboard would be a great improvement. Room temperature excellent but duvet TOG a bit too warm.
Review 86:Location in centre of Lymington. Attentive friendly staff Very clean and comfortable rooms. Excellent breakfast menu. Competitive rates.
Review 87:Breakfast staff not very helpful and idiots who think it acceptable to use mobile phones in the small breakfast area
Review 88:Nice ambience, nicely furnished. Helpful check-in staff
Review 89:Our double bed was two singles zipped together. It was a new bed, but nowhere near as comfortable as a double.
Review 90:Location was perfect for enjoying the town and the quay. Lovely walks by the river and The Solent. Conservatory at the hotel is a great place to meet friends at any time of the day.
Review 91:The hotel was itself very luxurious and I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a very nice room. Quality of food and wine in restaurant - excellent.
Review 92:wished we had more time there :(
Review 93:Spotlessly clean/friendly staff/excellent food/beautiful rooms/value for money/choice of breakfast in the room if wanted/quiet
Review 94:Two small criticisms: the pillows were very soft and provided little lift. A combination of soft and more solid would be better. The hotel car park is not well laid out and seems open to casual users thereby inhibiting its use for residents.
Review 95:The location in the centre of Lymington is ideal. The service was excellent and the food was very good. The heart of the building oozes character, with a particularly atmospheric 'garden room' and a dining area overlooking Lymington High Street.
Review 96:Meant to mention it before leaving and forgot. We were in Room No.2 Andthe toilet seat was dangerously loose. If an overweight or elderlyperson sat on it could be disastrous consequences! Suggest it be fixed. The only other slight problem we found was the extreme warmth of thefeather duvet. Despite not having any heating on in the room at all, wewere so very hot all night long. This however may just be a personalpreference.
Review 97:Ambiance, relaxed atmosphere, friendly, helpful and courteous staff.Food extremely good.
Review 98:Th noise from the radiator, and the fact that the toilet seat needing fixing/securing.
Review 99:The friendly welcome, and the fact that the staff wished my wife a happy birthday the following morning.
Review 100:Located on main street, does not match the pictures on web. Not the standard finishes of an original boutique hotel.
Review 101:People are friendly, nice hotel with typical ambiance.
Review 102:Excellent welcome from reception and all the hotel staff. We wereupgraded to a charming garden view suite which was delightful. Had adelicious seafood meal in the restaurant, the Tapas menu wasparticularly good value. The hotel's location in the centre ofLymington, means there are lots of interesting individual shops close byand within walking distance the town quay and boat yards galore. The NewForest is only a short drive away.
Review 103:We had a great time and give it top marks the only thing that could be improved was perhaps a more powerful shower and the attitude of the older woman at breakfast who I think was in charge as she was quite gruff and rude to the lovely waitress that served us.
Review 104:The hotel was lovely and original. Staff were very helpful and there was a great christmassy atmosphere. It was in an ideal location for seeing the new forest aswell as having lovely pubs and restaurants close by. The breakfast was excellent and the little bar a really good addition to the place, perfect for a drink when you arrive and excellent cocktails.
Review 105:Our room was lovely and cosy and welcoming. We found the staff to be very helpful. This was our first stay at Stanwell House and we would definitely recommend to friends and will go back again in the near future. Could not fault our stay in any way.
Review 106:Very friendly with excellent service throughout our stay. They had a special wine tasting dinner one evening which was superb, serendipity!! Dog friendly outstanding, will go again.
Review 107:The hotel car park was tiny, full up and not at the Hotel. I had to pay to use a public car park. Service in the restaurant was very slow. My room was very noisy, with a fire door in the corridor outside banging away all the time. Worse still, the room was on the ground floor with a small courtyard outside, which was in continual use by noisy people who had congregated outside to smoke.
Review 108:The room was well appointed.
Review 109:The receptionist was very kind and helpful however very disappointed with the service during breakfast. The waiter was late, which she apologised the other guests and myself for, which I was ok with. When she took my order, I opted out of the hot breakfast as I no longer had time but I asked for a cup of tea instead and thought to let her know if she could bring my cup of tea quickly as my taxi was arriving in 5 minutes, she was very defensive and abrupt with her reply. If she wasn't late, I wouldnt need to rush her and I was understanding of her lateness but she didn't understand that I was only letting her know that i'll be departing in 5 minutes. I shouldn't expect that from service, especially when they have caused the delay.
Review 110:The environment, the room, the breakfast was all at a high standard
Review 111:Only a minor improvement would have been a full length mirror in our room to avoid me having to climb onto bed and peer into mirror above the desk.
Review 112:We loved the decor, the staff, the food, the location.....everything!
Review 113:Breakfast. Asked for toast. Was served burnt toast. Waitress wasrude when I pointed out the error, not apologetic. It was too muchtrouble to bring fresh toast. Bad attitude. Very disappointingservice. Basic errors.
Review 114:Bar man and receptionist helpful and pleasant.
Review 115:The Conservatory area was a little cool for comfort during our evening meal. Room was adequate, no more.
Review 116:The location was ideal for visiting the New Forest, as well as Poole , Christchurch and Southampton. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast offered a varied menu and was excellent.
Review 117:The bed was somewht too hard, while the pillows were too soft and provided no support. Parking was problematic as the location of the hotel on the high street, meant that you had to struggle to find somewhere to park before checking in before being informed of the location of the hotel car park, which had limited spaces...it would be useful if on the booking confirmation the location of their car park were identified. Also hand soap in the en suites would be nice.
Review 118:It was an interestingly designed place making the most of its position and layout. The decor was novel and artfully pleasing. The staff were friendly and considerate.
Review 119:We told reception the main bathroom light wasnt working. They said they would take a look whilst we were out. On our return nothing had been done other than they had used the pull chord to leave the fan on and ignite the very dim lights around the mirror. Presumably to show us we were thick and the light did work if you used the pull chord. Obviously we knew this - the issue was with the main bathroom light where a bulb had blown. Given our stay lasted only one night we didnt bother raising the issue again. Secondly the water pressure in the shower is very poor and the shower hose too short.
Review 120:Good location, friendly staff, good food, nearbye parking.
Review 121:Not a problem, but a short walk to car park with limited spaces.
Review 122:Welcoming and helpful staff. Very clean room and public areas. Comfortable bed and large room opening on to garden. Good size of bathroom. Good choice of breakfast, well presented and well cooked. Ideal location (for us).
Review 123:I would suggest that a notice near the garden suites just to say to other non resident guests that there are guests in the rooms so we could have a little privacy when we were in our room and sitting in the garden.
Review 124:The very frendly greeting on reception, the fact that we were upgraded to a garden suite as it was my husbands birthday, very attentive staff .Will definatley recommend to friends and family .
Review 125:Room was quite noisy and not very spacious. Would have preferred a garden room.
Review 126:Nice ambience, good breakfast, easy to find and park. Room comfortable.
Review 127:Nothing really, but would have appreciated full length mirror in room and also magnifying mirror in bathroom. No, I am not that vain, just short sighted without glasses/applyingmake up!
Review 128:convenient position, comfortable room, welcoming staff
Review 129:Stayed here on four occasions now, previous three stays have been absolutely faultless hence returning again and again, however this time we noticed a significant change, the room, although one of the older styles so not to our liking anyway, was not of a high standard of cleanliness as on previous occasions, the water glasses in the room were so dirty they looked they had not been washed! I think our room number was 31, something should certainly be done regarding the bed situation as halfway through the night my pillow kept falling down the back as the bed does not fit up to the wall. Reception staff also not a patch on the lovely english lady that dealt with us on previous stays. Very disappointing as this time we brought friends with us and had been singing the praises of this hotel to them for sometime, we will not be returning again. It is the little things that can ruin a nice relaxing stay for people, reception staff, cleanliness and disturbed sleep are high on the list!
Review 130:Previous stays
Review 131:The food menu was a bit too gourmet for my personal tastes and as a result it was quite expensive. However, the quality of food and presentation was excellent.
Review 132:The service was very friendly, efficient and discreet. The hotel conservatory is a great place to relax on a rainy day. The location of the hotel is good base for exploring the local New Forest or a boat trip to the IOW.
Review 133:Difficult off-loading luggage in a busy High Street due to the highpavement and steps. Private car park some distance away. Most rooms havemany stairs and there are steps everywhere hence not suitable for thehandicapped.
Review 134:Very well-trained and friendly staff. Comfortable rooms which are well-equipped. Excellent breakfasts with good choice of cooked and cold fare.Very good restaurant and pleasant bar, although rather small. Locationexcellent - a short walk to the port and excellent shopping selection.Wide range of restaurents in the area.
Review 135:The room smelt slightly of damp. It was very dark with poor lighting. The curtains were hanging off the rail so would not close properly. Itwas ok for an overnight stay but if we had been staying longer we wouldhave asked to be moved to another room. Felt it was expensive for thequality of the room.
