Reviews for Lancasters Guest House
Review 1:First off, the owner was very friendly and booked me a taxi for my very early morning departure. The room was lovely, exposed beams, very comfortable bed and seperate seating area. In addition a fridge with milk, tea and coffee, fresh fruit and cereals. Very good central location with plenty of pubs and restaurants close by. Very quiet as down a cul-de-sac type road.
Review 2:no staff at the rooms at all, arrived called phone number on the door told the outside door code number, i was told "key in my room door". No staff in the morning put my key back in my room door and left, not sure on the payment as bookings.com info said no money would be taken. strange.
Review 3:old beams retro looking, clean tidy, good breakfast selection in the room on arrival.
Review 4:A bit difficult to find, because the name is only at the back of the property.
Review 5:A very nice bedroom with every thing provided- good on detail, and a pretty cottagey feel
Review 6:It is old building and walls are thin as well as creaky floor causes that you hear everything from the next room. But if you are looking for good price/quality rate, this accomodation is great.
Review 7:Great location i the centre, just 500m from the train station (to Stansted or London). Many restaurants and bars, shopping centre, shops and banks. There is a small refrigerator, filled every day by breakfast (water, milk, juice) and fruits, cornflakes, tea, coffe, and others. The room is small but has everything you need inc. WiFi, TV, Bathroom (towels, shower gel and more include). Will go back in future for sure. Old English style has its magic.
Review 8:continental breakfast in room suited us.fresh milk ,juice cheese cereal .owner does not live on site but very easy to contact .only three rooms all full of character and charm.second visit will stay again .
Review 9:It was cold, the radiator didn't give out much heat, the gentleman who let us in put an electric heater on and we didn't turn it off at all, was still cold int he room when we got back from an evening meal
Review 10:Good location, everything we needed was in the room
Review 11:I made a booking for a double room and when arrived I discovered that my room wasn´t double room but twins rooms and that because I was on my own they decided without counting on what I could think/want to change my room. In the past I stayed in that hotel and all was great but not this time. That is not acceptable to change a booking on their own as I selected a double room for a reason.
Review 12:Fantastic little hotel. 300 years old with one room apparently 400 years old. The decor mixes the old build with modern very subtly. Really comfy rooms. All the extras made this shine out. A little fridge with orange juice, milk, cheeses, yoghurt and water. There was also cereal, with bowls, granola bars and fruit along with coffee tea and hot chocolate. Really customer driven. When we arrived the room had already had the radiator and TV on - another nice little touch. Below the hotel is a lovely tea room called rosy lea. This really is in an ideal spot and is just a fantastic little find. Can see why it got 8.6 and will definitely be recommending to friends and family. Absolute pleasure.
Review 13:I liked it all!
Review 14:My room was comfortable and clean. It was located right in the centre of town, which suited me perfectly, restaurants and shops easily available. There was a fridge in the room, with fresh milk provided for tea/coffee,and breakfast.
Review 15:Travellers should be aware that the main building is now a café (Rosey Lea's) and that access to the rooms is around the right-hand side.
Review 16:Very convenient for Stansted - large clean room in pleasant old-town building - train station a short walk away.
Review 17:The advertisement indicated a private bathroom. However, it did not explain that the bathroom (although private) is outside the bedroom. It was difficult to walk through the common area to get to/from the bathroom. By far the biggest problem was parking. Again, the advertisement indicated there was parking for all guests. This is just not true. The owner David, confirmed there are only two spaces which is much less than the number of rooms available. We did always find parking but it often took a very long time to fit our car into the crazy small spaces available. The parking area is shared by a doctors office and it is almost impossible to park during the weekdays when the doctors office is open. When I complained about the parking to David he said it was my fault for renting a large car! We stayed for four days including a Saturday night. Be warned there is a lot of noise due to surrounding bars/clubs. We were unable to get to sleep until after 2AM.
Review 18:The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast items in the room were also very good. The bathroom was small but very clean and functional. The location is great. Very central to town etc...
Review 19:A short regular local bus or train ride from Stansted airport, regular train access to central London, plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, continental breakfast in the room at any hour, so very convenient for early risers, but with the option for something more substantial in the cafe next door. Quaint rooms, friendly and helpful owner and great value.
Review 20:Great location centrally situated in the town. The room was clean and well kept with some lovely home touches such as hot chocolate, coffee from a jar not from sachets. Great choice of breakfast cereals and a nice sized fridge with fresh milk and orange juice. Plus it had good sized plated and knife and fork to allow you to eat in the room. Very high standard.
Review 21:There is no resident staff member and it was very difficult to find (it is only the up stairs of the building on the web). Parking is the major issue. I found that all I could do was park anywhere outside of town, walk in, and go and relocate my car after 6:30pm.
Review 22:The guest house is located right in the centre of town and is excellently located for anyone travelling by any method other than car! The nearby cafe's are excellent.
Review 23:Picture shown is misleading as access to what are rooms only above tearoom is via a dark and isolated opening. No reception staff and one has to phone the number on the hostel door and await arrival of owner. I found the owner to be devoid of basic customer service skills. He had given my room away in error to someone of a similar first name which amused him more than it did me . No apology or checking out if room was satisfactory.i had requested a quiet room and the one allocated had windows opening onto an outside bar and restaurant which was noisy. The shortcomings of breakfast have been listed by other reviewers
Review 24:Room was clean but basic
Review 25:The place is a few rooms above a cafe, and the only way to find the place is finding doorway on the side of the building to indicate that your 'lodging' is upstairs!
Review 26:Location only. The room is small, almost a cubbie hole with a bathroom small too
Review 27:The renovated cottage is very beautiful, set right in the centre of the town. Spotless room with excellent daily service. The staff is very kind and helpful.
Review 28:The water in the bathroom made a very clunky loud noise, when turned on, either at the shower or at the tap. Quite dark in the room, so more lighting would be useful and especially more plug sockets.
Review 29:Self catering facilities. Central location. Very traditional furnishings and quirky
Review 30:I liked everything.
Review 31:If you are looking for a sterile, quadrangular, plastic hotel experience where the ambiance is as anonymous as a single sheet of white paper out of a ream of 500 then this is not for you. Lancaster's Guest House has character and I loved sleeping in a building that is hundreds of years old with the accompanying creaking floorboards, exposed oak beams and absence of right angles. The facilities were first rate: the bed was good, the bathroom fine, plenty of towels, high standard of cleanliness, excellent restaurants nearby and, even though it is only ten minutes from a major airport I heard only one, distant, plane while I was there.
Review 32:The ambiance. The handy central location. Sense of history and heritage. The wonderfully comfortable beds and room size. Toilet facilities convenience - clean & spacious plus gels and accessories. Storage for items and clothing - kept it neat and pleasant. Loved having coffee at hand in room. Dave was a perfect host putting himself out to make sure we were happy and that all was well. (Which is was. His friendly efficient yet professional attention made us feel extremely welcome. His mam did the cleaning and a big thanks go to her as we never met. This was among the best of places we have stayed (and been in many around the world).if not The Very Best for atmosphere and good vibe. All of it for a best price charge. What more surely can one ask for? Congratulations to The 'Lancasters Team' and thank you for having us. We are likely to return. We most certainly will recommend your place to everyone looking for a place to stay in Bishop's Stortford. Well done our Bishop's Stortford hosts we loved you!
Review 33:Difficult to find. The airport bus dropped me off and had some difficulty to find guest house. The name Lancaster is very hidden.
Review 34:Fridge with breakfast things.
Review 35:The constant thump of the music from the club over the road. The TV was in the wrong place, in conduction with the bed.
Review 36:The superb array of breakfast food. The great location and the sofa.
Review 37:The only thing I can complain about is the club that's a block away. I was there on a Wednesday night, and the music was quite loud. I could sleep well nevertheless, so I wouldn't say it's terrible. Just a bit annoying if you're the kind of person that requires silence to sleep.
Review 38:The bed in the room is wonderful, and so is everything else. The staff made it extremely easy for me to check in even when I got there a bit early, and after having a problem with my credit card, they solved everything immediately. Also, the location is just great. Right in the center of Bishop's Stortford, you're just a few steps away from coffee shops, pubs, etc.
Review 39:I would imagine that parking can be difficult although it was okay for me. It is also a lit difficult to notice the door at the side of the building so a better sign or instructions (on booking.com) would be beneficial.
Review 40:Pleasant atmosphere. Friendly welcome and then left on my own as preferred. Easy walk to restaurants, etc.
Review 41:- The lighting was a little dim
Review 42:- Free Parking - Very Clean with great decor - Breakfast is available in your room as and when you wish to have it (and a great selection too) - great value for money
Review 43:-the beds were not comfortable enough -toilet is separated with the bedroom -the breakfast could be better, too simple
Review 44:-excellent wifi -clean room and facilities
Review 45:You have to phone when you arrive but 30 minutes later owners came and were very friendly
Review 46:Great location. A short walk to everything. Quaint rooms with every comfort and very private. Can highly recommend.
Review 47:I loved the approach to continental breakfast, which left a refrigerator full with orange juice, water, milk, yoghurt and cheese and a table with a selection of cereals, crackers and fruit
Review 48:Central location, with parking. Comfy, newly decorated, very warm room for winter time. Continital breakfast, with fridge suplied, was varied and plentiful.
Review 49:apparently my colleague had a room that was draughty, mine was excellent though
Review 50:very central location, good for pubs, bars & restaurants. 15 mins from Stansted airport Host friendly
Review 51:Welcome was friendly, efficient but not too familiar. Room was perfect shabby chic, immaculately clean, good standard linen and everything worked. Breakfast laid out and in fridge was great idea..and delicious. Thank you
Review 52:If you like noise on a Saturday night, then it's great - if you don't like noise then beware if you want an early night; leave your heavy suitcase at Stansted as it's quite a walk from the station and there are narrow steps; difficult to find; there are cream crackers for breakfast (in the room) but no bread...
Review 53:Right in the middle of Bishops Stortford; well stocked courtesy tray; nice toiletries (including hair conditioner which you don't always see!); a lovely old room...
Review 54:We were met by David, the landlord, who couldn't have been more helpful - his mother even did our laundry for us! The room was delightful, & spotless clean. A perfect base for exploring the town. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Review 55:Scary bust of a God in the fireplace. Freaked me out a bit! Quite noisy at pub closing time.
Review 56:Bed very comfortable. En suite spotless and had lovely extras like shower gels and shampoos. Beautiful décor. Lovely furniture and furnishings. Breakfast carefully thought out and lots of choice.
Review 57:There was nothing to dislike. There was a window pane which needed attention but that was all.
Review 58:We were welcomed by the owner's Mother who was delightful. The twin room we had was very clean We loved the old beams and decor. There were plenty of items for breakfast if we chose to eat in our room or there is a cafeteria adjoining if a cooked breakfast is preferred. Easy distance from shops and river walks.
Review 59:noise from stansted airport : no rug or carpet on the floor made; breakfast was in the room with no bread or butter just cerel, juice, yogurt. the room was not finished.
Review 60:Central location
Review 61:Behind a beautiful mysterious white door I entered in an absolutely amazing world of cozy interior, where I forgot about the present and I found myself in the English history... greetings to the friendly "farmer" in a picture on the wall ...:) kisses from Poland. Monika
Review 62:breakfast is only orange juice, cold milk and corn flakes, it's ok in summer but would be better if there is something hot in the morning
Review 63:clean and comfortable room
Review 64:Extremely friendly staff. Sited in the middle of Bishops Stortford above a beautiful tea room. Part of the building is, I think,300 years old. Very clean and well maintained. Quaint room with bundles of character.
Review 65:Some noise because you are right in town centre but nothing major. Also squeaky floorboards from other rooms and guests but part of charm of the place
Review 66:Beautiful old building with fantastic beamed room. Beds very comfortable and good ensuite which is bigger than it appears in the photos. We liked self serve breakfast in room With fridge. Parking just outside front door
Review 67:Had to ask in tea shop for directions and then phone for instructions on how to get in etc. Partially hearing- not good situation! Nowhere did description say that it was only a few room- no access to rest of building. Car parking only just adequate. Lucky to get a space- couldn't earlier in the afternoon, only in the evening when we came back.
Review 68:Room was good with excellent bathroom. Fridge and refreshment facilities excellent.
Review 69:Owner was quite aggressive when I rung him. Bed was so small we had to sleep head to feet! The picture is misleading as they have not got the whole of the building.
Review 70:location but sleep was very difficult because of loud disco near by.
Review 71:Rooms not finished,no table to eat your breakfast on,very noisy at night from other people in B&B as rooms are all linked to the same small landing.
Review 72:Great location,good for Airport.
Review 73:lot of noise from night club downstairs & brekfast was mediocre at best. What do continentals find good about this
Review 74:location excellent once you have located it (took a bit of finding).
Review 75:I loved everything about this place. It's a beautiful house, the room was lovely, fully furnished and well equipped. The toilet was also pristine clean and the shower was great. The staff is charming, everyone treats you as a new friend, not a customer. Plus, you're just steps away from everything, so it's extremely convenient. I loved my stay here and would totally recommend it to anyone!
Review 76:The room had everything we needed, it was clean and nicely finished. Good selection of food and drinks. Great location.

Review 93:Breakfast could've been better but I appreciate the lack of available facilities.
Review 94:I loved the room style.
Review 95:A varied breakfast selection provided, which was a welcome change from a full English.
Review 96:Noise from neighbouring bar. No vat receipt so not good for business trip.
