Reviews for South Lawn Hotel

Review 1:they don't have a choice of continental breakfast in the morning. If you're european you're not used to eat every day warm meals. Apparently they had it in the past for the price of 5 pounds but now, don't know why, they don't offer continental breakfast anymore so we had to go and have breakfast in the closeby village.

Review 2:the furniture and decoration, the restaurant for dinner, the bath tub, the beds and the location

Review 3:Perhaps the wi-fi could have been available in the bedroom, not just the lounge. (Although perhaps that is on purpose)

Review 4:The personal touch from the owners and the refurbishments in progress were really nice.

Review 5:We have booked this hotel several times through yourselves & were extremely disappointed that we had to pay £10.50 each for breakfast, when it has always been included in the price before. Needless to say we went without! The couple we went with paid the same price for their room with breakfast included (£63) having booked through the South Lawn website a couple of days after we'd booked through you. We thought it was always cheaper to book through your company but this is obviously not the case & therefore we feel reluctant to book through you again.

Review 6:Nothing

Review 7:The staff were very friendly. The room was very comfortable plus we had a new bathroom. They are doing the hotel up and it will look fantastic.the view from our window was of fields with sheep in. Has a restaurant and bar on site.great for just relaxing or if you want to check out the New Forest area.will be going back to stay longer.

Review 8:The hotel is currently being refurbished, we had one of the newly done rooms it was beautifully done and extremely comfortable. Staff lovely, new owners hard workers and very welcoming, can't sing their praises enough.

Review 9:Good Food Friendly Staff Lovely Garden Room Beds Comfortable Staff helped us with all the luggage which is a big help at our age Will visit you next year

Review 10:Breakfast timing was an issue, cooked arrived while we were still eating cereal and reception was not very professional as seemed to be hosting a family gathering..!!

Review 11:Olde worked feel of hotel and peaceful location

Review 12:As my previous review - could do with a little t.l.c. But it is very pleasant, seems to have some new staff so maybe the new owners are working on spending time (and money) on sprucing it up.

Review 13:Small hotel, close to village of Milford on Sea and coastline. Our bedroom window looked out over a field of sheep - lovely view to wake up to.

Review 14:The bedroom window was dirty and so was the glass on the round tables. The bathroom was not cleaned while we were there and the cups in the bathroom were dirty on arrival. We washed them ourselves. The first evening meal we had was lukewarm and the vegetables were almost non-existent. Particularly our last evening meal was very bad value - hardly any vegetables. Except for the first morning, there was no Flora margarine available - we had to ask for it each morning at breakfast.

Review 15:Room was spacious and comfortable with a nice view. There was plenty of seating area in the hotel. It was nice and quiet and the staff were friendly.

Review 16:No bad experiences at all.

Review 17:The warmth and friendliness of the staff and the excellent food. The new owners have only been there for 4 weeks and are doing a great job. The hotel needs refurbishing and they are doing just that! We look forward to returning to see how they've done it!

Review 18:Staff were very efficient, breakfast was great. The new owners had only been there a couple of weeks but had already made some small changes to the hotel and it felt very warm and friendly.

Review 19:The bath and toilet needed some tlc. The seal round the bath was black and the toilet was dirty under the water line. We should have complained but that is not in our nature so we just bought some bleach and did it ourselves

Review 20:The close proximity to the local bus service.

Review 21:Limited drinks choice from the bar, one draught beer which was not available, only a bottle choice which was at room temperature.

Review 22:Location was easy to find and a good starting point for exploring the area.

Review 23:In need of updating but we were told that they are in the throws of doing that having been sold to new independent owners.

Review 24:Relaxed atmosphere. Friendly and obliging staff.

Review 25:Hotel was very comfy, staff went out of their way to help us and other visitors. Excellent parking facilities. Food in the restaurant was very good and very hot! We had a very relaxing few days

Review 26:Bar Close between 8am - 9 pm My Breakfast- Not as ordered My wife's Coeliac Breakfast not found on last day, Most waiters not know what it WAS,

Review 27:Location Privacy

Review 28:Rooms could do with a bit of sprucing up. When we last stayed, there was a large crack in our washbasin.

Review 29:Have stayed here on several occasions and always found the rooms comfortable, the staff friendly and the breakfasts very good.

Review 30:We love the comfortable, easy, relaxed, home from home atmosphere in lovely & well located surroundings + the very friendly & helpful staff.

Review 31:We weren't very impressed with the breakfast. Perhaps a buffet would have been better as some of the food was cold.

Review 32:Good location for exploring the New Forest. Lovely large bedroom and very comfortable beds. Also the evening meals were good.

Review 33:Hot food at breakfast on one occasion was only luke warm. The coffee was not good. None of the teapots would pour without dribbling all over the place. The fresh fruit salad one evening was not fresh; ingredients were watery. The receptionist on the day we left was from Hong Kong. She was so pleasant compared to the other two we encountered. We could hear them talking about various guests whilst in the bar. They were like 2 old fish wives, shouting and being raucous. They were very reluctant to speak unless we made the first move. One of them totally ignored us on a couple of occasions. Definitely not reception material.

Review 34:Location of the Hotel for our needs. We thought that dinner was very good; fresh, enough choice and cooked well. It was nice to have linen on the tables. The majority of staff in the dining room were great. Very pleasant; nothing too much trouble for them.

Review 35:Morning receptionist is unfriendly verging on rude. Bathroom filthy: - Short & curly hairs in bath - Dirt dropping onto toilet from extractor fan above. Room (16) needs doing up: - Wall paper dirty and peeling off in places - Bathroom sink and tiles cracked

Review 36:Staff at breakfast were friendly. Breakfast itself was tasty. Nice view onto terrace and meadow from room (16).

Review 37:Not a bad time, some thing a bit odd,I.e minestrone soup identical to Heinz tinned spaghetti/ tomato soup in 1 bowl.strangely, tasted ,okayish. Rest of dinner superb.bathroom and bedroom very clean, but rh sink cracked.grouting dreadfull, bathroom panel same. All downstairs, dining etc, excellent.

Review 38:Liked the hotel but note comments below. Do not think this negative,it is not.its how it was and we are not complaining, just pointing out.we WILL stay there again

Review 39:first evening meal and breakfast was good, next evening meal chicken was raw, and breakfast came cold

Review 40:Nice grounds hotel needs makeover Clarewas very apologetic, and adjusted our bill for bad meals

Review 41:We thought to hotel could do with a bit of TLC, most of the fittings need updating.

Review 42:Most staff were very friendly and helpfull, food very good, nice location.

Review 43:The hotel was really nice, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Parts of the hotel was a little tired but it was very clean and the bed was very comfortable and the room was a good size.

Review 44:The shower in the bathroom was too short to actually use. It had been very badly designed. The price was expensive considering the fairly basic accommodation provided. Additionally a mistake was made with our breakfast order.

Review 45:The location was good for visiting Hurst Castle.

Review 46:the hotel needs a refurshbishment bar drinks selection not good ambiance very poor some background music would improve things, seemed to be a lack of leadership had,nt a clue who the manager was the hotel as loads of potentional justs needs someone to take it on to fulfill it

Review 47:nice room, dog friendly, good breakfast staff seving breakfast very good

Review 48:Very tired and dated, carpets in lounge and communal areas not vacuumed during our stay.toilet separate from bathroom horrible view

Review 49:Good location, pleasant looking building, good selection at breakfast & staff friendly & helpful

Review 50:Room was small and overlooked car park not garden as stated. Seemed to be run by agency staff.

Review 51:Liked the location, on bus route, saved driving. Dinners were good.

Review 52:Net curtains not secured at both ends 4 electric light bulbs not working Beds not made after being out all day. staff had been in the room as a letter had been left on table asking us not to flush toilet as they were having work done to water system.

Review 53:The rural setting on the edge of Milford-on-Sea was a delight. There is something soothing about the sight of sheep and cows from the bedroom. All of the staff were extremely considerate and polite. By the way, as a traveller on the eastern shore of the Atlantic I put two 'l's in traveller. Please ask your Dutch masters to switch to real English.

Review 54:Felt room dated bathroom requires complete overhaul shower to low although not tall had to bend to wash hair

Review 55:Staff very friendly view very good location good

Review 56:Staff mostly friendly and helpful, but some room for improvement, especially on reception.

Review 57:Large, comfortable room. Spacious but "homely" hotel. Plenty of parking.

Review 58:No WiFi in rooms Cups and glasses in room not always washed up. Restaurant and bar meals rather expensive and limited choice.

Review 59:Size of rooms Relaxed atmosphere. Large, relaxed lounge, Location Good size breakfast

Review 60:The location is within a 15 minute walk of the town. More than adequate car parking. Fairly-priced and entirely adequate for a night or two's stay in the area.

Review 61:Very dated decor, needs major updating. Breakfast toast cold, food warm, limited menu. Bar staff not in attendance, have to search for staff. closes before 10pm. Limited room service. Both wash basins cracked in bathroom. Bath was old and badly stained. Bed clean, room not fully cleaned. Flat Screen TV too small/wrong position for room. Overall, lack of staff for hotel facilities.

Review 62:Hotel was easy to find. Great location, lovely property. Spacious grounds and very quiet. Room 15, had great view of fields with sheep, horses and campers. 15-20 mins. walk into the village of Milford-on-Sea. Drive to New Forest/Christchurch within 20 mins. & Bournemouth within 40 mins. Best place to eat was the Smuggler's Inn in Milford. Quality fresh food, portions and service, always busy, so make a reservation.

Review 63:Everything. Why is this hotel still trading?. It is in need of total refurbishment. Staff rude . Food very poor and cold. Waited 40 mins for a pot of tea. Bathroom disgusting. Mould everywhere. Bath panel held together with masking tape. Everything is mismatched, stained and generally dirty. Worn carpets. The list is endless!!!

Review 64:Location

Review 65:Fridge and WiFi in room would have been nice. Having to use WiFi in bar was frustrating at times Cleanliness was ok but cobwebs and marks on carpet. Cups not always washed properly Menu on bar was limited

Review 66:Good atmosphere Good size rooms Generous breakfasts

Review 67:The room looked like it was falling apart cracks in sink and toilet. Hard bed and my partner suffered with his back hurting and bed to low. Bitten numerous times me and my partner. Staff could barely talk english and where rude the first time we stayed it was great but the room we stayed in this tume need updating.

Review 68:The breakfast was great.

Review 69:the manager was wonderful and helpful with any problems. The food was far better than we had expected. Decor was tied but quite no aircon woke to the lambs.

Review 70:Hotel requires some updating -paint and fitments not pristine. Fanin bathroom not working bedside cabinets not matching bathroomshelf missing

Review 71:Service from hotel manager/staff was excellent - (we had occasion tocall paramedics and although the incident was not within the hotelconfines he was both concerned and caring) Large button telephone V.good idea Quiet location

Review 72:In need of redecoration in certain areas. Bar needs a bell to summon staff as, often the bar is not attended.

Review 73:Staff friendly. Peacefull location. Great garden area with lawns.o

Review 74:Garden view room overlooks the car park, shower not working, when told the receptionist she said "I know" whole place drab and very dated.

Review 75:Positiondated

Review 76:The only criticism we would make is the shower head was too low and we are not tall people!

Review 77:We have just returned from South Lawn after a lovely 2 night stay. First impressions were excellent - a lovely property awaited us and we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who couldn't do enough for us. Our room was very spacious and clean overlooking the front garden as requested, the bed was enormous and breakfast was to a good standard, with plenty of choice. It took us only 20 mins to walk into the centre of Milford on Sea where we found plenty of restaurants/pubs and a wonderful wine bar/coffee shop called the Cave.

Review 78:The decor was a little 'tired' and somewhat unfashionable, but this is only a very minor criticism. A little extra investment would improve things hugely I am sure.

Review 79:The hotel was comfortable in an understated way. Staff were friendly and seemed helpful without appearing to have been so solely due to 'training'. Location was beautiful and very peaceful.

Review 80:The decor is a little tired and bathrooms could do with a refit.

Review 81:The setting was lovely. We enjoyed the breakfasts and evening meals. The room was very spacious and comfortable with a lovely outlook.

Review 82:Our bed needs replacing This is the first area that should be addressed when upgrading is carried out. Although the bathrooms are showing their age they were clean and functional. These comments should not detract from the charm of the hotel.

Review 83:The ambiance and general feel was a pleasant change from more modern establishments. We liked the lounge area and the comfortable wing chairs. We stayed a week and appreciated the large rooms with plenty of space to put clothes properly so they remained uncreased. The food was good, nicely cooked and well presented. All the staff were very friendly..

Review 84:The wrong menu was given at dinner. No one offered to open our Prosecco on Friday evening. Paid extra for garden view, could not see out fully as double glazing had blown. Both wash basins cracked in bathroom.Bed clean, room not fully clean in places. Hotel needs a lot of TLC.

Review 85:The steak meal was good so was the pork, but all meals lacked vegetables.

Review 86:The flat screen TV was small and perhaps the decorations needed to be refreshed.

Review 87:Lots of hot water and great breakfast. The garden was pleasant with plenty of places to sit.

Review 88:just the toast.

Review 89:it was a wow right from the start appealing entrance drive and lovely location. The bedrooms we had was amazing id call it a suite settee etc. View of garden was lovely. Staff were all very friendly couldnt do enough for you. Choice of food was excellent to although you do need to do something about the COLD toast and also very hard!!! We would definately go again and have recommended it to several of our friends and family. LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL NEXT YEAR. If you do sell the property do keep those outstanding bedrooms.

Review 90:Bar-Very little choice, only 1 beer,1 lager on tap. No brandy!!!Manager said have too wait next delivery 3 days later. Doingstocktake!!! Told by barman plenty in other bar. Manager couldn'tbe bothered to get it. Told my wife is Coeliac, nothing done forb'fast till last but 1 day,Brought own cereal, but still chargedfor b'fast. No Wi-Fi on site.

Review 91:Hotel is convenient for us, Milford 15-20 mins walk, Barton also closeby, & New Forest. 10 mins to relations nearby. We have stayed twice& going back in September. It's still a good Hotel.

Review 92:Refurbishment has begun but is far from complete. In particular, our bathroom was somewhat dated. However, once reported, a couple of minor problems were rectified promptly.

Review 93:The hotel is in an excellent location, on the (not at all busy) main road from Lymington to Milford-on-Sea, but set well back in spacious grounds and very quiet. The bar and restaurant staff were very pleasant and helpful, and the dinner menu was varied, inventive and of very good quality. Our room was very spacious and comfortable.

Review 94:The chairs in the dining room need replacing or reupholstering. The soft furnishings need an update. It all looks a little tired.

Review 95:it's in beautiful grounds and they are well kept. The staff were very friendly and the food was very good. the rooms are nice and big.

Review 96:No wifi in rooms. Animals allowed in hotel, but not just this one. We don't think dogs should be allowed in hotels and eating establishments.

Review 97:Staff excellent and the meals were superb in formal dining room. Compliments to the chef the meals were what you would expect in a fine dining restaraunt .

Review 98:Honestly, this is a hotel in need of serious modernisation. Ancient avocado bathroom facilities, no lift, no pool. Also the corridor light outside our room didn't work. And all this seems to have affected the morale of some of the staff, who I suppose may lose their jobs when the property is sold.

Review 99:Nice big room with view of garden. Excellent value, which will probably not be the case if and when the hotel is modernised.

Review 100:Really down at heel. Needs revamp. Cracked basins.Slipping shower.Paint splattered floor surface in bathroom. Non functioning remote control TV. Wake up call did not come as requested - Manager told me I should have used my mobile! Manager did take £10 off 2 night stay following our complaints

Review 101:Bathroom not cleaned on arrival Light switches hanging off wall decorating would help plus the thread bare carpets on landing and stairs need replacing. needs upgrading

Review 102:the staff helpful and the location is good

Review 103:no problems at all.

Review 104:the hotel was easy to find and in a good location. all the staff were really friendly, the room was large, quiet and overlooked the garden and a field. easy parking.

Review 105:Our bathroom in room 14 was in desperate need of a complete overhaul. The two sinks were badly cracked, and the tiling around them awful. The bath was badly stained, and the overall impression was of neglect. Not a pleasant experience!

Review 106:The cleanliness in the bathroom areas leaves a got to be desired. The floor area were never cleaned, items laying on the floor when we arrive were still there when we left. The WC pan had not been clean for weeks as it was stained and black. The sink holes to both the basin and the bath had never been clean for weeks, again stained and black..

Review 107:The staff were helpful and smartly clothed. The common areas were clean, but in deed of some form of updating

Review 108:Condition of front door and door mat very poor. Heating on when unnecessary in hall ways. Some wallpaper peeling off.

Review 109:Large rooms. Excellent breakfast. Large car park.

Review 110:Room dirty and in need of a re dec with peeling wall paper, window pane seal was broken so couldn't see out of it at all. The lady who checked us out at reception was moaning about her job in full hearing distance of the whole hotel reception! Bit embarrassing and very unprofessional! No chef on at least 1 evening, forcing us to eat out and no bar staff so had to ask reception for a drink.

Review 111:Lovely setting Breakfast staff very friendly and helpful Bedroom was large

Review 112:The food was shocking. They had chef issues and had to call in an agency chef. The manager was clearly out of his depth and there was not enough staff to manage a busy hotel.

Review 113:The location and the staff including the assistant manager Peter

Review 114:Bathroom had 2 basins, but both were badly cracked. Also grotty limescale staining round bath plug hole.Shower stuck on piping hot so couldn't bath or shower 1st morning!

Review 115:lovely pastoral view out the window- field of sheep. Lady on reception found me a lead to recharged my phone, and arranged for man to fix shower.

Review 116:Fixtures & fittings in the room were very dated & in need of modernising. Shower ran hot & cold, hair in plug holes, cracks in tiles & marks on walls. Front of house seemed quite stressed & busy, huffing & puffing about answering the phone. I felt like I was perstering when needing to ask questions.

Review 117:The terrace/beer garden. Nice place to sit in the sunshine overlooking fields filled with sheep & horses.

Review 118:Very poor quality Dinner and the same menu every night. Hotel badly in need of refurbishment.

Review 119:reasonably comfortable room with pleasant view. Quiet location

Review 120:Not the most up to date hotel and showing its age and under investment in some areas. For the price it charges ( & dogs are extra) not sure value for money

Review 121:That we could bring the dog and we could walk to the village in the evenings

Review 122:Hotel was clean and comfy but could do with some updating. Shower was very dated.

Review 123:Hotel is in a lovely peaceful setting yet it is easy to reach the new forest and the coast by car or bus. A couple of minutes in the car or a fifteen minute walk brings you to the village of Milford.

Review 124:Too hot in the corridors! Radiators untouchable despite the weather being warm!

Review 125:All the staff smiling and helpful as usual. Much better menu, food excellent and good value

Review 126:Food for evening wasn't listed so went out for evening meal.

Review 127:Clean room with fresh soft towels. Good views of garden to side. Also overlooked the front car park for vehicle security. Friendly receptionists and easy check-in and out.

Review 128:First breakfast was spoilt when too little food was left by large group of foreign guests and only one member of staff on duty who could not cope with the demands and re-stock the buffet

Review 129:ambience and delightful setting

Review 130:Rather jaded appearance of rooms and general common parts.Very noisy fan in bathroom kept it turned off. .

Review 131:Comfortable. Having a bath, Nice setting, Excellent and helpful staff

Review 132:Managed to get a room without a view, only a roof.It would have been nice to be given an option.

Review 133:Location handy for our visit to Exbury and Bournmouth. The New Forest is on the doorstep.

Review 134:Rooms where a bit tired, wallpaper pealing off in places, light fittings broken and outdated bathroom. could do with a refurbishment. However did not spoil a very enjoyable break.

Review 135:Very good food and service. Our waitress Clare was very good. She found out it was my 65th birthday and she decorated our table, put up a birthday banner and arranged a candle on my cheesecake. what a fantastic gesture .Can you pass on my thanks to her. Lovely Girl

Review 136:There wasnt anything not to like will definately be coming back!

Review 137:It was some wonderful time in the past when life was much slower and restful half expected miss marple to walk through the door!!
