Reviews for The George Hotel
Review 1:No facilities, bad mattress, old carpet, unsecure, basically a glorified hostel not a hotel
Review 2:Accommodation in Bishops Stortford is poor and this place just about makes an acceptable nights sleep
Review 3:Tatty and no more than a series of bedrooms surrounded by an Italian Restaurant - Prezzo. Rather like a run down island in the middle of something rather trendy to which it had no attachment. No breakfast, just beds.
Review 4:The location in the centre of Bishop's Stortford.
Review 5:Neglected beyond belief... Very broken sink, insect infestation down side of bed, dirty, woke up with hair smelling of cigarettes (pillows probably need chucking/washing). Kids running around the place very late/early/ locked out of rooms a lot... Is this also a hostel? No security at all... Very open for just anyone to walk in and take luggage from behind unmanned desk. Club over the road was loud and late... Perhaps would have been better all round sleeping in my car.
Review 6:Didn't see/hear any ghosts. :-) Didn't seem that secure from non-guests Bit noisy from bar over the road but what do you expect from a hotel right on the High Street. Was fine with earplugs in. :-)
Review 7:Location Hallucination inducing carpets! Asked what choice of biscuits I wanted.
Review 8:Plug didn't fit basin and it had someone's shavings on it, had to ask for toilet roll, as inadequate old roll supplied, thick dust on shelves in bedroom, no hairdryer so asked for one and it didn't work, only one pillow, carpet has seen better days. Dead plants in tub outside. Just a few little touches which would make the whole experience so much better!
Review 9:We asked for a quiet room and were given this, so we had a good night's sleep which was very much appreciated. Thank you! We had to ask for a few things and the Manager was very helpful. Good places to go for breakfast nearby.
Review 10:Staff were talking so loud in the middle of the night. walking up and down in the corner. calling each other names didn't let us sleep until my friend tell them to stop.
Review 11:None.
Review 12:This place is little more than a set of scruffy rooms to let above Ask Pizza in the centre of Bishops Stortford. Any character of the original coaching inn has long since gone, and has disappeared under shoddy décor and minimal facilities
Review 13:Nothing
Review 14:Facility in bad need of upgrade. Packpacker standard at best description. Not as I expected from website. Could be excellent with refurbishment
Review 15:Room size excellent . Bed comfortable. Excellent location in town center.
Review 16:Had to go to nearby cafe for the pre-booked breakfast which we didn't know about until we arrived late at night. This was ok but quite a basic cooked breakfast (1 egg, 1 sausage, bacon, beans and toast) with no other options offered and highchair was dirty; luckily I had brought supplies for my toddler as I don't think they could have catered for her allergies. Stairs up to the rooms not easy with buggy and bags.
Review 17:Prompt response to my email asking about nearby parking. Clean room. Pleasantly quiet at night despite being town centre on a weekend. Travel cot provided as requested but no linen for it.
Review 18:I went to the hotel at the end of July (2015) at 3a.m. just to stay for the night, I rang the bell and a very polite lady came to show me my room. I really don't know why they got negative responces since the hotel is just fine. I went there, slept, ate breakfast and left. There was no noise from the road outside, the room was warm and everything went well! Thank you!
Review 19:The entrance was dark and open all night. Only 1 lightbulb worked in my room. The room was pokey and small. I actually spent 8 hours in the room. 6 of them sleeping- it was long enough!!!!
Review 20:The receptionist was very friendly and welcoming
Review 21:No sign to indicate entrance. No direct phone line to hotel. No shuttle from airport. No breakfast.
Review 22:Clean sheets and bedding. Clean ensuite. Inexpensive. Clode to bank shops and cafe. Quite close to railway station.
Review 23:Light in the Bathroom didn't work since the early morning and didn't get fixed. So I had to use a flashlight. The host did not really care about it. The toilet flush didn't work rather. She told me only, it did work in the morning. Then the whole washroom got fludded with water. She had no other room to use but afterchecking booking.com there was room aavailable. No discount, nothing. One time, never again. Halway full of dirty towels and sheets. Got cleaned up at 23:30 to 1:30 at night. I thought I lose it.
Review 24:Nothing except the location.
Review 25:No coffee cups left for the second night, an oversight by the maintenance staff. Very noisy outside but then again, we're in the town centre so what would I expect.
Review 26:Central location.
Review 27:It was opposite a very noisy bar and restaurant. The staff were very amateurish. No hair dryer in room, shower not working ,no towels in room when we arrived.
Review 28:Location it was very convenient for town and shops.
Review 29:Room ready. Loo paper, towels, tv remote batteries had to be provided. No answer from ringing reception bell 4 times over a 45 minute period.
Review 30:Location
Review 31:No staff, had to wait over 30 mins to book in. No lights in bathroom, room was dirty. Will not use again!
Review 32:Only thing that was good was the location and the bed, even though bed was crooked.
Review 33:We were very alarmed that the main door of the hotel is left open day and night with nobody at the reception. If this door is to remain open all night then there should be someone on the reception through the night. The staff were run ragged trying to keep the place up and running.
Review 34:The location and size of rooms.
Review 35:Breakfast not on site, but to be honest on a nice sunny day it's no problem and no parking!
Review 36:After an interesting check in with very helpful but unique staff, the room was great, clean, comfortable and located a stone's throw from town! Breakfast quite the opposite, with a few minutes walk down the road but welcomed buy friendly staff and ok food.
Review 37:no dining room, very little security no staff. nightclub opposite (30 yards) very noisy until 2 am
Review 38:central location, tea and coffee facilities in room, place felt unmanned
Review 39:Furniture very basic or lacking (only one bedside table; 6 inches of hanging space). Bathroom heating did not work. Curtains flimsy and motion-sensitive lights in courtyard flashed in room all night. Not a hotel as no facilities. Very Basic B&B and therefore very over-priced.
Review 40:The hotel was rooms only with no bar, restaurant or lounge. That was fine for me but might not suit all. There was no light switch immediately inside the door so it was necessary to find the bed in the dark to put the lights on.
Review 41:The hotel was very central in Bishop's Stortford. I arrived by train so the lack of parking wasn't a problem. I received a friendly welcome and all that I required to know was explained clearly. The room was comfortable with double glazing and I slept well. It was en suite and the shower was good. Breakfast was at a nearby cafe which was friendly and helpful.
Review 42:Some kind of permit parking system for the car park would be good
Review 43:Great central location lots of restaurants and bars nearby. The hotel has lovely period features.
Review 44:There is no parking space outside but you can park your car around the corner in a car parking which is very cheap.
Review 45:The manager of the hotel did everything to make my stay pleasant. I needed a quite room and she show plenty of options until I found the right one. The breakfast is in a cafe near the hotel and the staff were very helpfull. I needed a bowl of milk for my cereal and they didn't hasitate to bring it, even cold or hot.
Review 46:Lack of staff in the morning when I went to get a breakfast voucher on the first day and when I went to check out at 8.30am, no-one around at all. Terrible noisy night with ?other guests coming in at 1.30 in the morning, shouting, door knocking and banging, giggling, etc went on for an hour. No night staff seemed to be around to stop it or if they were, I could not contact them as no phone in room. Too frightened to leave room. Took my debit card details but no machine available, now anxious about this...Room very shabby but I should not have expected too much for £114 for 2 nights.
Review 47:I could not of asked for a better hotel to stay at, the manager, gave us absolutely everything we needed and more, very understanding to anything we ask, overall a fantastic night spent at the George!!!
Review 48:Street corner location means traffic noise but they do give you an extra slide-across window. Just remember to use it !
Review 49:Convenient to Stansted airport, yet in a delightful town. Staff exceptionally friendly and attentive. Clean, comfortable, tasteful decor. Good value.
Review 50:The pillows and mattress were stained, the room was a bit tatty. It overlooked the High Street and I was woken several times by night deliveries to shops, traffic and general noise. My room was also adjacent to the office, so I was disturbed by squeaking floors and general activity overnight. The TV did not work properly, and I could only get a few channels.
Review 51:The receptionist was very friendly and helpful
Review 52:There is no parking space but around the corner there is a car parking where for £4 you can leave the car for the whole day.
Review 53:The staff was stremely helpful. She made her best to find a quite room. The hotel is located in the centre of the town sorunded by nice restaurants, banks, tourist information, etc. Eventhough the breakfast is served in a cafe, a block from the hotel, the people are very friendly and very flexible, I needed some milk in a bowl for my cereal and they were happy to do it for me.
Review 54:Staff were a little unprofessional on arrival. Breakfast was in a local café (although the actual café was very nice) There is a noisy bar opposite
Review 55:Near to where I needed it to be
Review 56:Check In was farcical and took getting on for half an hour. There appeared not to be any staff available most of the time. Had to just dump the key on departure. Electricity didn't work in the room on entry so had to get a card to activate it. This was taken by cleaning staff the next day so on return to the room I had to get a card again!! Bed was not too comfortable and room was overlooked by offices opposite and a bit noisy.
Review 57:Room was reasonably clean, if a bit small. Location was handy for train and centre of town.
Review 58:The beds were extremely bad and it was very noisy weekend nights. It is not a Hotel.
Review 59:because of flight delay we arrived late and were still able to check in at 1:30 am
Review 60:Breakfast was paid for however this isn't served in the hotel. A voucher is given for a nearby café however directions which were given to this café were vague and ended up not being able to find this Stayed on a Fri night, a lot of noise from people on the streets. Staff not overly friendly, they just did their job.
Review 61:Location in the town centre
Review 62:No car parking. Bedroom furniture interesting. Mattresd on bed was completely worn out. Two double beds in room each with single quilts. Hotel has no facilities (bar, food). Kettle had to be moved to a floor socket in clothes hanging area. Condition of bathroom badly finished. Light fittings in poor repair.
Review 63:Breakfast at local Cafe Mocha excellent though poor directions from staff. Room was warm.
Review 64:Poorly maintained and slightly dirty room w/ stained carpets, no wi-fi; TV didn't work, no remote; Very loud music from nightspot directly outside window; Staff forgot to reserve our early morning taxi. Overall bad experience.
Review 65:Conveniently close to Stansted airport and to center of town (if that's of value to someone...)
Review 66:Can't understand why booking still work with this hotel! It was the worst experience in our life... And we slept in a lot of motel in Us. The picture of the room on booking are not from the George, the room was dirty and really small. The promise wi-fi didn't work at all. There was no reception and no personnel from the hotel.. When we arrived we wait for 20mins before someone shows up and the same happened for the check out... In one word don't book there
Review 67:When we left
Review 68:This was not a proper Hotel, more like a Hostel! It was room only and I had to go to a local cafe for breakfast. The bedside light fell apart in my hands and there was no remote for the TV.The room itself was reasonably clean, but the carpets and the decor in the main part of the establishment were in a poor state. I was charged an extra £5 by the owner who assured me that this would cover the cost of breakfast at a local cafe. This turned out not to be the case. The cafe took a nominal 10% off the bill. It was, in effect, merely a loyalty card. I would never consider booking into this 'hotel' again and would never recommend it to anyone!
Review 69:Checking in. No staff, rang a push button bell several times, nothing. Was tired from a long drive. Went away and returned and was lead to a room full of Polish people in their lounge, felt like I was intruding into someone's house. I was requested to make immediate payment on arrival. Ok there were no facilities that I could charge to my room anyway. No free or any breakfast given or offered (as advertised on booking. Com). Dissatisfied.
Review 70:The room was clean. The manager helped me with my bag. I walk with a stick.
Review 71:No customer service Dirty room - nothing like their website No bar No restaurant No help Owner - not bothered about complaints, get loads of them !!!
Review 72:The directions from the station to the hotel, in their promotional information, could have been better. The 'office' was not open at all times. Thus it was lucky that I had picked up a card from the taxi which took us to the hotel. There was no lock on the bathroom door in the room. The space for the toilet was inadequate. Breakfast was at a nearby café, which was fine in such lovely weather but would have been very different in other conditions and seasons. Considering the price, compared to much better hotels in which I have stayed, I do not think that we received good value for money.
Review 73:The location in the centre of the town was good.
Review 74:Bed was to low, Shower dirty, Single bed stopped bathroom door from opening properly, no fan to keep cool had to buy our own, no draws to put clothes in no nets at windows, no information in rooms about breakfast or what times or where breakfast was served good job it wasn't snowing because you had to go down the road to a café, one pillow each, room wasn't ready when we arrived, had to pay in a room where a women was eating her dinner & talking on a mobile phone I have never stayed in such awful hotel it certainly wasn't worth what I paid & won't ever again & I think booking. com should check the hotels they put on their website!
Review 75:nothing
Review 76:Smoke alarm covered with cling film. Broken light in shower with exposed wires. Mattress broken. Shower filthy. Lots of noise from neatby night club. In short would let a dog sleep in there. Well overpriced.
Review 77:Leaving
Review 78:Rooms, facilities and cleanliness Staff, poor service, no towels available on arrival No bathroom lock or light Bit of old bread down the side of my bed Broken bed No breakfast, although booked
Review 79:Good position if visiting Host
Review 80:nothing negative to say. Ok its an old building so you get the sloping floors and tired carpets.
Review 81:Location is great. If your like me and want to be in town rather than stuck in the middle of no where the this little place is it. Really close to good pubs and restaurants and a couple of minutes walk to the airport bus stop.
Review 82:The dirty stained carpet. The filthy bathroom which I had to cleanbefore we could use. The lack of towels. I asked the only member ofstaff for towels and asked her to hoover our room, she said itwasn't her turn and someone else had cleaned it the day before.Relatives staying there had a broken bed and old food left in the room.Genuinely horrendous! Don't go there!
Review 83:Location. Breakfast in the nearby Italian Café was lovely.
Review 84:The hotel was tired. Bathroom needed updating. Sheets/towels we're clean, but bathroom was not. Strong smell of cigarets despite the non smoking signs. Expensive considering all this.
Review 85:Everything. There was a totl lackof care and cleanliness. It had previously been an old fashioned 'inn' but had been sold to the 'Prezzo' chain and the remaining rooms on the first and second flor had been sold to two men, who clearly had no interest in the place as long as they could raise £55 per night from each of the 10 rooms . Definitely not to be recommended under any circumstances.
Review 86:Location. I had come for a business meeting in Bishops Stortford andIthought I was booking n 18th century coaching inn in the centre of the town. I got a pseudo hotel - just about 10 rooms really with no services at all, no service and a very uncaring, unpleasant atmosphere about the whole place.
Review 87:I waited 15 minutes to check in. The receptionist was outside talking to her friends having a cigarette. They had also messed my booking up ao my room had gone (however they did give me a free upgrade). The extremely uninterested attitude of the staff was irritating and I waited so long for a member of staff of checkout I just left my key card on the desk and left.
Review 88:The hotel is well placed and good room bedroom once your in.
