Reviews for The Salisbury Hotel
Review 1:Broken lift, opening and closing all night. Smell of mould and damp in room. Wash basin in room not in en-suite!! Which driped constantly. Rooms are very very tired.
Review 2:The staff was extremely welcoming, excellent value for money, conveniently situated.
Review 3:There was no light it the ROOM, not joking. Hotel is falling apart and is worst by far within that area (I have stayed in Clifton, Southcliff and Grand Canaria in that area) Radiator in room was making such loud noises that I could sleep in fear of it exploding and boiling me alive.
Review 4:I understand that the staff will all get dismissed when much needed renovations commence at the end of January and that is a great shame as those there were so obliging. I expect the price will double or triple.
Review 5:Excellent staff working under difficult conditions. A n excellent breakfast. A very good price to pay for such attentive service.
Review 6:As above, plus the hotel has been sold. We understand that the new owners are bringing the hotel into the 21st century.
Review 7:Nothing. The hotel is tired, scruffy, outdated, dirty and we would never stay there again.
Review 8:Room freezing, heating did not reach room until about 8.30pm. No top sheet on bed. Staff quickly remedied this, but only had single sheets left, so we had 2 single sheets laid lengthways across the bed. TV remote and tv did not work.
Review 9:Location of hotel and staff friendliness. Nice big room.
Review 10:Shower only produced cold water. Had building work going on outside our window so very noisy. Signs said coffee and tea was in every room however only coffee was in our room with no sugar. I got a half price deal due to late booking, would not pay original rate
Review 11:Staff was friendly. Great location. Grabbed a last minute deal pleased with this.
Review 12:No parking spaces , you had to find one on the street , TVs didn't have remote , bed linen clean , curtains dirty , basic accomodation , shower had mould in it ,
Review 13:Location excellent , staff friendly and helpful
Review 14:The place is unkemp, obviously used as a homeless hostel. Children's toys and clothes everywhere. Prams outside doors. Even at tghe price it should not be marketed as a hotel
Review 15:Position
Review 16:The place does need a bit of an update, the room was a little tired but great value for money over all
Review 17:Great location, friendly staff, great value for money and clean
Review 18:Room was not clean, shower drain blocked, toilet dirty & place smelled of damp. Lift didn't work either. Bed like a board.
Review 19:Staff were lovely, and had a sea view.
Review 20:Hotel is a bit run-down, someone had obviously only done a quick cleaning of the room (food remains on the floor, condoms under the bed...) Noisy guests... but fantastic value for money
Review 21:The view from the hotel ! Friendly owner.
Review 22:Quite a lot of children running around screaming. Think the hotel is being used as a hotel for single mothers.
Review 23:Hotel was quite run down, but our room was clean.
Review 24:The room was dirty, the carpet was absolutely filthy, tv didn't work, the overflow for the toilet went to the shower, the shower was dirty and did not work very well. There was a 3 plug adapt or in the room, which I haven't seen for years, the hotel looked like it hasn't been decorated since it was built. A really bad experience which I will not be repeating.
Review 25:Nothing
Review 26:Out dated hotel Curpet was so durty Table was uncleaned TV does not work Heating system not working properly Light shade did not hoover may 2 years Bathroom was so small one normal person can not move properly. Safety regulation will not allow this kind of bathroom.
Review 27:Like nothing
Review 28:We booked here as a place to stay before heading to France in the morning. The hotel was dreadful! It should not be charging and in fact should not be taking bookings!!! There were bits of the ceiling were crumbing on the floors in some of the corridors, the toilet had sanitary stains in it, the floor tiles in the bathroom were cracked and could easily cut your foot, the floor had not been vacuumed, there were people smoking in the bar, there was a lady sleeping on the sofa in the bar, the receptionist said they would put breakfast out for us as we were leaving early but there was none there and no one to ask, the decoration was poor, and it would appear that most of the hotel is used as a half way house for single mothers and young adults from social services. Terrible place to stay and would advise booking the Holinday Inn near to the Eurotunnel.
Review 29:It was cheap (ish)
Review 30:If you want a experience of sharing accommodation with the homeless then this will help with your social studies. This is a hotel used as a hostel for the homeless....with around 10 children running a circuit around the hotel. This hotel should either define itself as an hotel or a hostel for the homeless or a hotel for tourists. I feel strongly about this.
Review 31:nothing
Review 32:Absolutely horrendous stay. hotel smelt damp and the room had mould and the light fitting was coming out of the ceiling. Refused to give any money back.
Review 33:We enjoyed our stay, but a few things could be done to improve the hotel that are not big things. Clean table clothes at the tables for breakfast. Run a hoover over the restaurant floor. A coat of paint to cover damp stains on the walls.
Review 34:Staff were very friendly and helpful. We wanted to stay in an old Victorian house, but it felt like it is just ticking along and needs some TLC.
Review 35:Awful place room not as described given triple (three singles) instead of family room( 1 double, 1 single, 1 sofa bed) not family friendly, has a bar area with someone drinking alcohol behind the bar, not fully disabled accessible despite ramps(to steep) room was dirty and damp then had to argue over a refund also no parking nearby when we arrived at 7pm ish, we found a much nicer hotel just down the road. Salisbury hotel, avoid it's not what it appears. At a cost of £69.50 there are much cleaner alternatives nearby. Don't stay you will be disappointed.
Review 36:Nice views but not worth the conditions
Review 37:No Wifi this should be a MUST now days. Toilet pan has come loose from floor & seat was badly fitted. Toilet was not clean when I went into room. The room was full of little black flies, even in the kettle, killed over 30 of them. Hot water took about 10 minutes of running & wasting water to come through & the whole building is in bad need to maintenance & decoration. This could be such a lovely place, But I feel no love goes into it, Just about grabbing the money
Review 38:Nice sea view & not far from shops
Review 39:Room freezing, quite a few young children running around. Looked like an after school club, sheets and blankets very tight. Graphic penis scratched on wardrobe door. Not the place i would take my wife
Review 40:Nice breakfast low price
Review 41:The relaxed style and informal and considerate relationships shown by the staff towards guests. The lack of pretentiousness. A good budget hotel in an excellent location.
Review 42:the room needed a good hoover the door stuck ,the bedside lamp had no bulb or not plug in,the shower was dirty tiles broken, just needed a good clean,,
Review 43:the staff was very good
Review 44:We were so shocked to see the poor state of the whole hotel. It was run down, grubby and old. There was no light bulb in the one lamp in our room..we were too scared to walk barefoot on the dirty carpet.Wi fi only worked in the lobby and the basement where we had our breakfast smelt damp and musty. Someone needs to take this hotel over and give it a complete refurbishment,as the staff were pleasant enough and the location is excellent.
Review 45:The location
Review 46:Inside was run down in 3 rooms TV s didn't work every thing was messy not hoovered smelt musty a complete mess looked like a refugee camp
Review 47:On the see front
Review 48:Hotel is very old. Needs upgrading. Furniture and carpet very old. Bathroom shower panel very loose.
Review 49:Sgaff were very friendly and professional and went out of their way to assist you.
Review 50:Given an a room which had used beds and cups with drinks still in them. Second room better but still very dusty with cob webs. Breakfast was appalling, not one table available to use, no clean cups, staff said clear own table if you want one, then told one two eggs left or scramble egg left ( cold). No beans left , shrivelled up bacon scraps .. Toast appears ten minutes after food. Totally unacceptable. Ask if bags could be stored away in safe place to be told no problems will lock them in a empty room but were in the same place when we returned.
Review 51:View from room
Review 52:Never got any satisfaction when we asked for something to be fixed. My husband ended up doing it himself.Asked three times for some extra pillows. Was moved three times because each room was unsatisfactory.
Review 53:Coming home.
Review 54:The room was filthy, damp, bedding musty, toilet door hanging off, large crack in wash basin, hairs in sink and bath.Carpet sticky and filthy. Damp patches and paint peeling everywhere. Mould up the bathroom door ( I have taken photos to support this) Fire alarm went off at 5.25 am and the so called night porter/fire marshall asleep on settee in the lounge and slept through it, didn't have a clue. Only 7 guests responded and the whole thing taken as a joke by the management. Was told the hotel is too damp to burn down. Turned out to be a false alarm but if it hadn't been I hate to think of the consequences. Thankfully hadn't booked in for breakfast. The receptionist 'Rose' had a unclean creased dirty top on and fingers brown and stinking of nicotine, very rude. As we had had a long journey slept on top of the bed until morning and then demanded refund. The whole 3rd floor is a disgrace. We were told in the end (and taped all conversations on my phone) our room should not have been booked out. The hotel is also a halfway house for DSS and regularly takes groups of foreign students who were also very loud and rowdy. The fire brigade should be informed of the lack of fire drill. The whole place should be condemned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review 55:Nothing!!
Review 56:in desperate need of a refurbishment. beds and furniture were like about 50 years old. very shabby place which smelt damp and had water leaking from the ceilings in places.
Review 57:The price and location
Review 58:This 'hotel' and I'm using this word loosely, is a doss house. The odd holiday guest is well and truly outnumbered by the waifs and strays that have been put in here by whoever! Looking at the clientele there are homeless families, down and outs and asylum seekers? We gave up on breakfast, one person serving 30 - 30 people. Avoid this hotel at all cost.
Review 59:Location was within walking distance of the town
Review 60:Public areas were very disappointing - needed a thorough spring clean. Too many badly-behaved children playing in the lift!
Review 61:Never having been to Folkstone before it was perfect to explore the town. Staff friendly.
Review 62:Breakfast only served after 8. Told we could have a continental waiting for us at 6am. No one arrived in the dining area and night porter was stil asleep on the sofa as we entered reception area. Claimed she knew nothing about it and didn't bother offering to sort something for us quickly
Review 63:With no handle on the window to close it, what with the cold and the shower dripping all night, and such thin pillows, we were surprised we actually got to sleep. The room needed a thoroughly good clean.
Review 64:It was a short stay thank goodness
Review 65:The hotel is a bit run down but for the price I paid and it was only for one night to be handy for Dover ferry early in the morning
Review 66:The staff are friendly and location is good and they did me a continental breakfast at 6am as I had to catch a ferry at 8am
Review 67:The smell, the decor and general state of decay in the place and staff. Desperately uncomfortable beds, a shower room which looked like it would make you dirtier than when you walked in. We dare not have breakfast...
Review 68:It is close to the channel tunnel and cheap
Review 69:The beds and furnishings could do with replacing really, but then considering the price of the premier inn for folkestone was over £200 in august and this one was closer to £60 for a family room, and it was only one night, I wont complain.
Review 70:it was the cheapest hotel deal I could find on a stopover to the eurotunnel. It was a nice location, close to the beach, walking distance to the town, free street parking. The staff were friendly and the drinks in the bar were cheap. It was fine for one night.
Review 71:We changed rooms 3 times because of various faults ie no light in bathroom in room 1,television not working in room 2,and room 3 had the light flex hanging from the ceiling.I have seen better hotels that have been condemned.really upset that this was on your site.as does not enhance your reputation.
Review 72:Nothing about this hotel would encourage me to go back
Review 73:Had the family room at the front of the Hotel, the view was amazing and room is huge. The hotel is worn in places yes, but the cleanliness is 100%. Really helpful staff, our whole experience cannot be faulted in anyway.
Review 74:This is not the first time I have stayed at the Salisbury and it was again a bit of a surprise. The expression "nearly clean hotel" jumps to mind. The room is usually coated in dust and lint. There are no toiletries..not even a hotel size bar of soap. I have yet to get the TV working and the normal rats nest of wires hanging out of the TV and converter was again evident. The room was one of the smallest I have encountered in over 40 years of traveling; both business and pleasure. There was not even room to open a small suite case on the floor. The actual bedroom was probably no more than 6 wide and 9 to 10 feet long. The bathroom and WC were actually larger. It became evident that the hotel was a residence for city benefits cases and MANY children ran, screamed and tossed sweets wrappers around the common areas and generally made a mess of any area they inhabited. The breakfast was adequate however there appeared to be now reasoning on how clients in the breakfast room were served. If you sat close to the kitchen you got served, if not...you waited. Once staff levels got sufficient it seemed to work better. The room was a bit shabby but sufficient to sleep. Again, the hotel is shabby and does need an upgrade. As an aside..if you are checking out in the morning and looking for a staff member you will have to look behind the grill covering the bar for the bell to summon a staff member. They hide the bell when breakfast is being served.
Review 75:location to train station
Review 76:Lack of parking! Surrounding streets all busy. Bathroom a little tired needed some TLC
Review 77:Great location for early Eurotunnel departure. Large spacious room sea view accommodated our family of 5
Review 78:Very suspicious smells in some parts of the hotel (breakfast room and in our corridor). Would need to be refurbished.
Review 79:We were given a very large room with a view on the sea. The shower was also very nice.
Review 80:I booked a couple of nights here, I was very disappointed with the hotel and it was very dated, dirty Staines on the carpet in my room, Tea tray full of mould, broken window lock so noise from outside and could not sleep, midges would not let me sleep, fire alarm went off at 1am, had to go and sleep in my car in the end, so checked out after one night, got one night refunded even though I said I want a full refund, didn't even get an apology, worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
Review 81:Good location on the sea front and parking is ok if you can get a space.
Review 82:Showers were a little on the poor side. Rooms a little dusty
Review 83:On the whole. It was value for money. The staff friendly and very helpful. The location exellant.
Review 84:Half drank cups of tea left in our room from previous occupants instead of clean ones we could use. All draws in the room have never been cleaned. We saw fish and chips in the morning left in the heat on tables in the dining area which were still there in the evening. Cleanliness was terrible. Although the beds were clean this is where it ended.
Review 85:Location is literally on the sea front, parking not a problem.
Review 86:The hotel was filthy we had a dirty towel in the wardrobe and someone's dirty t-shirt in the drawer. The bathroom WELL there was no way I would allow my family to shower in the facility provided. There were kids just in shorts eating McDonalds off the floor and running up and down the stairs. 24 hr check out - we had to leave at 4:30 to catch the Eurotunnel the night porter was sleeping on the sofa and didn't wake up or stir so we had to let ourselves out. It seems its a hotel run for homeless families
Review 87:my alarm going off at 4 am
Review 88:The whole place needs gutting and redoing - there just is nothing else to say really. It looks and smells appalling.
Review 89:Very little I'm afraid. This hotel is just too dirty and scruffy to be called such. Calling a building a hotel creates a certain minimum expectation and this doesn't meet it.
Review 90:What didn't I like? Everything. I knew this knackered old hotel wouldn't be for us as soon as we stepped into reception and smelled the musty/smoky interior. Reception staff double as bartenders to the bar on the *same desk* as check in so if they're serving a pint, you have to wait until you get your room key. The advertised 'free wifi' on here was only free wifi in the reception. I was on floor 3 so I don't know if other floors got any signal at all. We were here on a relaxing, romantic weekend away but there was no way this hotel could accomodate that. We are absolutely fine with simple, frills-free accomodation but this place was only slightly better than the chicken-coop hostel I once had the misfortune of staying in in NYC. The duct tape bizarrely covering some of the lift buttons, the dirty carpets *everywhere*, the stained *everything* in the rooms - desk, walls, floors, the dreadful old mattress with coils and buttons (?!) scraping my ribs at night, the mouldy bathroom with a burnt out light and broken extractor, the dust covering everything you'd touch or put your things down on in your room - just disgusting. There's no point in having a tiny old TV with rabbit ears that doesn't work - just get rid of them, it's embarrassing. And the breakfast? I'm just glad I didn't get food poisoning. I only tried it once, after I was immediately brought eggs after just placing my bum on the seat (they must have been sitting out) and a plate of canned plum tomatoes! It was also difficult to eat with the stench of gas emanating throughout the breakfast room. This hotel desperately needs a thorough refurbishment. We couldn't even just use it as a "place to sleep" as the bed was so horridly uncomfortable. Please, go elsewhere, this place isn't worth it. And they've no right to charge the high amount of money for *this* even if it's during August. Appalling!
Review 91:There is nothing positive to say about the hotel itself. I suspect it has survived as it is right on the seafront and does not have too much competition in the Folkestone area.
Review 92:Its a real shame that the property internally and externally is so tired. It could really benefit from a complete refubishment as its a great property and has so much potential due to the location. It was also a little disappointing that with young children there was no option of an evening meal.
Review 93:The location was fabulous, lovely walk down to the beach and fantastic play areas for the children. Beautiful views overlooking gardens and the sea. The staff were very friendly and the service was exceptional at Breakfast time.
Review 94:Very poor service. We booked 3 ensuit rooms and one of the rooms were given without cleaning anything in a state the previous occupantvleft it. Toliet soaps as used by previous occupants were not removed from all three rooms. The breakfast served is absolutely poor. All can / tin foods provided. Unwashed juice glasses were used to serve noticed. Honestly the worst hotels ever stayed. Will strongly not recommended even at free of cost.
Review 95:The plug sockets did not work, the breakfast was one tiny sausage, bean juice and a plum tomato. Had to ask for cups, coffee, juice, butter and no tables had been cleared. Whole place needs an overhaul.
Review 96:There was nothing to like.
Review 97:This is a very run down hotel which smells quite damp. No fitted sheets or duvets and curtains that didn't close. Toilet seat broken and piece of dental floss left on side of sink. Very close to tunnel. Didn't have breakfast and huge room and very cheap but not a good experience. Had to park on the street and the wing mirror got scraped.
Review 98:Location.
Review 99:Strong smell of smoke in non smoking rooms and strong odours around the hotel. Dirty linen on the settees. Broken beds. Dirty chairs. Broken tiles in bathroom. Needs a lick of paint everywhere.
Review 100:Manager was helpful. Close to new seafront area.
Review 101:Bathrooms dirty and unclean as were bedrooms , smelt dirty and musky .
Review 102:Hotel was in very poor state of repair , rooms were dirty and unclean - bathrooms were disgusting . Will never stay there again , looks like it is being used as accomodation for homeless family's , shockingly bad hotel .
Review 103:The rooms were very basic and the beds not very comfortable although the bedding was clean the rooms weren't great
Review 104:The staff were very busy but very polite and helpful
Review 105:The hotel is held up by sticky tape. Curtains hanging off the rail. Overall the place is filthy. Wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Never worth the money they charge
Review 106:Absolutely nothing. Place is a disgrace
Review 107:I didn't like the bed covers, dusty and itchy. Some of the room, floor were very dirty. The room look shabby.
Review 108:I like the location. The water was really like and warm.
Review 109:Dirty room. Tired dirty grubby furniture. Holes in towels. Shower grubby. Carpet awful. Two windows would not open.
Review 110:Location. Two staff members were lovely and chatty in the bar area
Review 111:This is my first negative review -- ever. You never know what you are getting when you book online. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the crumbling façade and the cigarette butts swept into a large pile by the front steps. The place was a filthy mess, with elevator indicator lights taped over, floors dirty, a grandfather clock in the lobby with a door half off and the works missing, unwashed tables, the lobby restrooms flooded with water standing two inches deep, a sign posted from the Health Department giving the place a 3 our of 5 rating -- I could go on and on. The worst thing was the bed -- not a proper mattress but something with buttons poking through the sheet all over the place. I got very little sleep on that thing. Don't believe the review that said they are in the middle of repairs. There are no repairs going on anywhere. Do not even consider staying there.
Review 112:I liked absolutely nothing about this hotel. At almost 75 Euros ($80,00) it was over priced and totally disgusting. I have traveled around the world and stayed in some bad places, but none worse than this dive.
Review 113:The service was surly. We arrived to find no power in the room and only1 double socket to 3 single & 1 double bed. Toilet, sink &shower were filthy. No food available at 7pm. Lager in bar was totallyflat. Worst hotel I have ever stayed @ £175 for two rooms. Makes'the Hotel ' on tv seem like the Savoy!!
Review 114:There was absolutely nothing to like
Review 115:The hotels cleanliness was so disgusting that we chose not to even come downstairs for breakfast as we where worried that we would all get ill from it.
Review 116:The Hotel is a Grand old house. With great view of the sea. Lots of greens around. Very quiet at Night. Close to the Channel Tunnel. And plenty of parking spaces. The House is in need for some renovation work. But considering the age of everything, it was as clean as possible. I am coming to England for 34 years now. I have had lots of filthy, dirty hotels, which were much more expensiv. The Salisbury Hotel is old, but clean. The employees were extremly friendly.
Review 117:This is a "victorian" hotel that is in the need to be torndown. Simply. It's one of the worst hotel ever seen (and I'm apilot, I spent thousand of nights in several countries, even in the socalled third world) and we are well below th minimum level ofacceptability. Dirt extended from the common areas (even waste abandonedon the stairs), to the rooms (I found soaps and bubble bath abandonedfrom the previous guest on both the shower and bassin... And friendsfouns "something else in the WC!...and we don't even have totalk about the moquette...with every possible type of staines). I'msurprised as the officials let this property to keep their businessopen: the elevator ground floor keyboard was kept in place with a doubletape, and a button inside popped out when I pushed it... Last, the"seaview" rooms we had were with a "side view"instead, and my "front" view was thru a very dirty(untouchable) window, with a broken glass repaired with an opaque one...About the breakfast... We found a small table filled with cereals only.A bowl with two small jams... We were given a single egg (it seemed likeplastic) and a single slice of bacon... Than some toast.. If you have atent, use it instead to go in this "hotel" and booking, please, cancel it from your list!!
Review 118:The whole place is only fit to stay in if you desperately need somewhere cheap to lay your head. The place is run down. Threadbare carpets. Breakfast room has mould on the walls and smells awful. I went to pick up a glass to find it stuck to the tray.
Review 119:There was a clean bed with a roof.
Review 120:The hotel was going through some referurbishments , it was more like a building site, and had not seen a Hoover in a long time, sweet papers and food crumbs all over.
Review 121:The bed was comfy, and the breakfast was nice.
Review 122:Broken fire safety door arm Hotel feels like it is falling down Children running around all hours Staff 1 on reception queue to check in queue at bar as receptionist also runs bar
Review 123:The hotel is a glorified hostel. Its dirty from the minute you walk through the door. Didn't even stay overnight. Would never recommend it to anyone. The only plus side was the manager was very understanding and refunded my money.
Review 124:No bedside tables with table lamps (we like to read in bed before sleeping) TV did not work (aerial lead faulty.) the promised repair did not happen so I repaired it myself. (perfect reception thereafter)
Review 125:The staff were very friendly. The breakfast room was attractive and the breakfast was excellent
Review 126:Mum ordered a veggie breakfast which comprised of one egg, beans and a plum tomato (from a tin). Most places will offer mushrooms, extra egg, etc in place of the meat. Toast was provided separately, but again no preserves whatsoever were given.
Review 127:The location was perfect; we had a sea view room which was enjoyed by Mum & I. The bedding and en-suite were very clean and the room was a great size with comfortable beds. It is an approximate 5 mins walk from the main town with plenty of free parking outside on the side roads. The staff were very friendly, polite and helpful.
Review 128:I realise that running a hotel is hard work and costly, but this has to be without doubt the scruffiest, most miserable hotel we have ever used in Great Britain. It was reminiscent of a run down bed sit in the 1970s. We didn't want to take our socks off and walk on the carpet. It was like places I've seen in the Eastern block 4o years ago. Neglected furniture, fogged windows, knackered 'decor' the works. Parts looked like an abandoned building. A real last resort, I'd rather sleep in the car. We couldn't wait to get out.
Review 129:Getting away in the morning.
Review 130:Oh dear building bit past its prime, take VHS videos with you as TV as touch n go in two rooms, but the VHS might have played !!!!!
Review 131:Friendly staff esp Jess !
Review 132:The whole place needs to be cleaned , too much broken dirty furniture sometimes less is more , kids constantly running around early till late
Review 133:The view was Lovelly and easy location for travel
Review 134:This is a "victorian" hotel that is in the need to be torndown. Simply. Review 135:When we left the hotel in the morning...
Review 136:Every thing was so old. Nothing matched curtains were torn. Musty smell I would never recommend hotel less than zero stars if you could get any lower.
Review 137:Breakfast was okay
Review 138:TV in room didn't work. When I reported it to reception the lady told me she could do nothing as she could not leave the bar. This was not satisfactory, but she just shrugged her shoulders. While waiting to talk to her, she was on the phone and ended the conversation by slamming down the phone on the caller !!!
Review 139:Good location near to town.
