Reviews for Little Hallingbury Mill

Review 1:Hotel advertises that they have a resturant but I was told on arrival there was no dinner available for that evening. The bathroom looked like it should of been in a caravan. The room itself was freezing cold, when I woke the next morning everything was very damp even the quilt. I was up most of the night breathing out condensation in the air. I was asked if I would be having a full English breakfast in the morning which I replied yes please and roughly what sort of time I said about 7. I went over for breakfast for 7.10 am and it had already been cooked and that was cold as well.

Review 2:Room was in desperate need of refurbishment. No wardrobe. Broken bed. Broken toilet seat. TV wouldn't tune in. Door lock very loose. Generally quite run down.

Review 3:Restaurant, bar and service very good. Food excellent.

Review 4:A lovely and quiet place right next to the river Stort and the marina. Single rooms are small but enough for one person. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant with the mill and the candles in the evening. Staff were very kind nothing was a trouble for them.

Review 5:Our Room was a bit tired looking .

Review 6:The host Richard was very friendly and helpful. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious . Bar and resturants full of history.

Review 7:We needed accommodation near airport but was very difficult to find in the dark.Room was tatty, curtains didn't meet, carpet grubby, drain smell in bathroom, window latch broken so couldn't shut.

Review 8:Bed was clean and comfy. The owner stayed late as our flight was delayed which we were very grateful. Previous reviewers must have stayed in different room!

Review 9:Really very isolated, so without a car you are stuck with taxis. The bathroom in our room was ridiculously small. Bedroom as a whole was pretty basic.

Review 10:The owner/manager was very helpful and I can imagine it's an interesting place in summer weather. Common areas are well decorated.

Review 11:Lots of things wrong with the room, bathroom light did not work, milk was off and to did not work, and key could not be found on arrival also the hotel was full for the wedding I was attending and there was no crisps in the bar

Review 12:Nice location

Review 13:No lemon in the gin & tonic.

Review 14:Great food, excellent service. We stayed for one night as it was close to stansted airport. We would recommend this as an alternative to staying in the more well known hotels. A great way to start your holiday.

Review 15:The hotel bedroom was a bit of a let down. The room was quite small and the bathroom "a plastic pod", a sort of wet room. Having said that, the room was clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The owner told us he plans to renovate and update the bedrooms in the next phase of redevelopment.

Review 16:The Mill is in a lovely, secluded location next to a small marina. We stayed with our daughter who was flying back to Porto from Stansted, which is approximately 20 minutes drive away. We had a warm welcome from the owner and his staff. We had a good meal in the restaurant which incorporates the old mill wheel as a feature.

Review 17:several mistakes on our bill - extra breakfasts, starters that hadn't been ordered, but we were in a large group and didn't check the bill on checkout. Rooms were quite old fashioned and a bit cold and gloomy.

Review 18:Food in the bistro was lovely, bed was very comfortable.

Review 19:Dirty carpets in room, dried blood stained duvet cover, no working hair dryer so had to go to airport early morning with wet hair, so very unhappy! Tatty exterior to rear of property. Owner referring to someone he knew in a derogatory term in front of customers, We ate in the restaurant, which was very nicely presented but precedence to service was for regulars drinking at the bar.We both had upset stomachs in the night after eating and were flying early next morning

Review 20:Location Bar area

Review 21:Very small rooms and even smaller bathrooms. Don't know how larger people would manage to have a shower etc.

Review 22:Good location for the airport - so long a you have a car. Quaint setting.

Review 23:Worst quality mattress I've ever experienced. Struggled with the doorkey to one room so had to move rooms. Needed a shelf for the kettle/to make drinks rather than have to use the floor. I didn't use the wardrobe but it looked precarious.

Review 24:Nice location though difficult to find. Breakfast was excellent although my friend would have preferred fruit and yoghurts as well as cereals. Had delicious scones but it wasn't clear that these had to be pre-booked. Though they were worth the wait.

Review 25:The downside is the rooms in the house. They really need updating. Everything is there that you require but its all very shabby. The carpets in the main stairway are threadbare. The bathroom needs a complete overhall to make it in keeping with the style of the place. We couldn't open the bathroom window either, which I hate! Bed was comfy but very squeeky everytime you moved! And outside the house is littered with all types of rubbish which is a big let down when you have such lovely views.

Review 26:The mill is in a lovely location and the staff are very welcoming. Lots of free parking is great. Food in the mill was good but not much choice on the evening menu. Just needs some decorating and tidying up throughout!

Review 27:Great place for a stop over, owner pleasant and chatty as were other guests. Helpful and informative about area and transport links, if looking for a base outside of London

Review 28:Unfortunately there was little attention to detail. We liked Richard and Miranda but felt they were struggling with investment in the business. The bedroom in the house was dreadful. Coffee cups and wine glasses were left dirty on the bar and Richard could not pour a drink to save his life. They were lovely, but need a big think about running a premises. The food was excellent.

Review 29:We quite liked the quirkyness of the mill with the garden and water. The food was very good.

Review 30:Probably there isn't the room but I would have liked an armchair in the bar. Not a deal breaker though.

Review 31:Manager very helpful and chased me down the drive to return my coat that I had left in the bar! Much appreciated!

Review 32:Sticky carpet and peeling wallpaper .... but that did not spoil our experience.

Review 33:The restaurant was great with the original cogs and gears of the mill on show. The setting was lovely and we enjoyed a fab walk along the riverbank before a good breakfast.

Review 34:tiny awkward toilet/shower, owner tried to make a joke about it. Soap container empty. TV not tuned in, only 2 channels. Refusal to serve dinner to group of 6 adults 2 children, said kitchen couldn't do it (?) - sent on 15 min walk to pub where we were welcomed..

Review 35:nice soft bed

Review 36:There was no provision at all for guests during the day because of the function, which was advised after making a last minute booking. Our room was tiny, even though it was a family room. The beds were creaky, there were no wardrobe or hangers or anywhere to put clothes so they had to stay in our bags. The accomodation was similar to student digs in a shared house, not the same as the pictures of the beautiful old mill. Staff were unhelpful, not even able to direct us to the nearest pub for a drink (bar was restricted to guests of the function). We could not eat until 7.30 so ended up going elsewhere and couldn't walk along the canal as it was for private moorings only. All in all very dissapointing for a venue which had so much potential. To top it off for £85 they didn't even include breakfast! We did let the manager know our concerns and he did apologise, but it was not enough to change our minds about staying again.

Review 37:The building was very quaint but because of a function we could not use the bar, restaurant or gardens during the day.

Review 38:I must admit..... There is not one single negative to be said at all....

Review 39:Spent two truly wonderful nights at this fantastic Mill, set in stunningly beautiful countryside with a canal running through. The lovely couple, Miranda and Richard who run this beautiful Hotel, were extremely friendly, sociable, attentive..... the perfect hosts. Who I noticed treated all their guests with the same attentiveness, making everyone was happy, content..... The bar staff were also very friendly and helpful too. I must admit there is not one single negative to be said at all.... From my lovely room (number 15 at very top) with the most stunning view of the canal, the deliciously cooked food, which Miranda does all by herself and indeed excels at, the location is just so tranquil and also the value, as you most certainly do get so much more than most establishments, as a guest you welcomed and treated with the upmost consideration. Would I stay here again, without question, as it "ticks all the boxes" and more :-) Would I recommend this hotel to anyone..... Most definitely yes, one of the best places I have ever had the joy and pleasure of staying at :-) Miranda are most certainly hostess and host with the most :-) Book a room, have a meal..... You will not be at all disappointed. Room Tip: Wish to go to sleep, wake up to the beautiful sound of water, have a stunning view of canal, ask for...

Review 40:The accomodation in the adjacent building, in which our room was situated, is being refurbished. The room was tired! Critical things, like the bed, had been addressed, but curtains, bathroom and carpets were old and in need of replacement. I understand a private owner needs time and income to undertake the refurbishment program. Based on the bar/restaurant and the price would accept the compromise in the short-term as the owner undertakes the refurbishment.

Review 41:The bar/restaurant is really nice, interesting old water mill, good beer and good food. We ate an evening meal and breakfast and enjoyed them both very much. Well situated for Stansted Airport and certainly more interesting than a regular hotel.

Review 42:What did I like.... I don't think shouting at almost midnight is good

Review 43:Not much more to say but on leaving pulling out on that nasty bend is highly dangerous

Review 44:Bit of a strange smell in the room even though it was clean. Wi-fi quite slow Single room really quite small (bathroom sink area particularly small as gap is smaller than my shoulders) Door couldn't be locked from outside so room had to be unsecure whilst having breakfast Hotel right under flightpath of nearby airport

Review 45:Staff really friendly Great Breakfast Beautiful location Gorgeous little restaurant

Review 46:Hot water ran from both taps in the bathroom. No clean towels provided on 2nd day of stay. There was no room service. Television not visible when sat in bed. Also the window at the side of the bed didn't shut properly.

Review 47:It was convenient for our visit.

Review 48:Nothing!

Review 49:Beautiful unusual location.perfect for getting away from it all! Enjoyed a lovely meal, made all the more perfect by the hospitality of the couple that own the mill

Review 50:The bathroom in the room I had was very cramped.

Review 51:The two owners. Brilliant! Warm and welcoming. The greatest fish and chips in the world. Location next to the river/canal. Cosy bar.

Review 52:After spending 2 nights at an hotel on the M11 services at Bishops Stortford the Mill was a haven of peace & tranquillity. Small, friendly, personalised service. Great food in the restaurant.

Review 53:The decor in room could do with being refreshed but I think this is reflected in price so v good value

Review 54:The location is beautiful, staff friendly and helpful, good food, bed comfy, room clean, good value.

Review 55:Not a bad experience as such - just...well, maybe a lack of staff? For dinner service, there just seemed to be the owner and a young member of waiting staff - owner offered to bring us menus but didn't and when we got them ourselves and wanted to order, we was told the kitchen was about to close. Not massive problems but maybe an extra member of the team would have been beneficial. We wanted to pay for dinner before bed, but nobody around to take payment, same when we wanted a quick drink before bed the next day so we gave up in the end and didn't bother. Great service when we did get it, though!!

Review 56:Breakfast was amazing! We stayed for dinner in the Bistro too, food completely delicious and really plentiful! Setting is gorgeous by the canal and river, thoughtful screen on the window to stop the bugs and moths coming in at night. Welcoming and friendly host when you could get him. Cosy room, good powerful shower, free and plenty of parking, free good wi-fi.

Review 57:The condition of all 3 of the rooms we had was extremely worn and depressing. The management left their couple of young staff members to deal with usual issues for which they were untrained or prepared. No attention to detail - dirty cups in room, travel cot arrived with no linen for it and was stained and grubby. Standards not up to current expectations.

Review 58:The location, the breakfast, the efforts of young staff to help solve problems.

Review 59:Beautiful place, very relaxing, VERY FRIENDLY COUPLE. Believe they are Richie and Jen. Couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was Excellant. We heard from a lady having a drink, That their Meals were Absolutely Fantastic. We see the Roast Dinners coming out but at that time we were full from stopping off and snacking. So Wish we had waited. Next time Guys.

Review 60:The restricted space in the pod-loo/shower

Review 61:The peaceful location with beautiful walks on the doorstep. The friendliness of all the staff, especially the owner.

Review 62:The rooms are what you would expect in a budget guest house, one of the most uncomfortable beds we have slept in, room shabby, a fire door you can see light around the edge(ill fitting) shower room with black mould around the shower basin

Review 63:Location , food, hosts most welcoming.

Review 64:Could have done without the music during dinner &breakfast & would have liked a bigger double bed!

Review 65:The place and the location is very special and the owner very friendly.

Review 66:Don't like to complain..I know they had a problem with their towel provider, but there was no towels in the room..or soap..or shower gel. plenty of bog roll though.

Review 67:Best fish an chips I've ever had.ever. gorgeous little pub with friendly staff.

Review 68:The bathrooms in the annex are very small, but functional.

Review 69:We were made so welcome by the owners - nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to accommodate my 86 year old Mum. The location as well as the Mill itself is beautiful and the rooms, though not huge, were spotlessly clean. We had dinner in the bistro and the food was lovely. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Review 70:Adjacent building where most guest rooms were located, was little tired and dated. Showers need updating. Noises carried from corridor. Aware of being under Stansted flight path, but very quickly got used to this.

Review 71:Good food. Pleasant staff. Interesting old mill building. Lovely rural location with good walks direct from hotel.

Review 72:The rooms are a little tired. Also more of a variety of the music in the bar/restaurant would be a good idea.

Review 73:Staff very friendly and location good.

Review 74:It was in the middle of nowhere. Impossible to get there without GPS coordinates. Also, the restaurant closes at 21:00, which seems to early for a place that may take a while to find. Bathroom was ridiculously small (our rooms was located at the annex, maybe at the main building it is better). Even my girlfriend, who is 1.63 m tall and weights 50 kg, could use the shower comfortably.

Review 75:The place itself is beautiful, the mill machinery in the dinning room is very nice too. The staff where very kind and attentive to us.

Review 76:The Hotel is in a great location , an ideal setting for wedding receptions. Although i would not personally choose for my reception as the place is a little tired and could do with a facelift and some modernisation. But overall nice local, nice people and the food not too bad either.

Review 77:There was nothing I disliked about my stay.

Review 78:A lovely little hotel. Really friendly and off the beaten track. Very relaxed and staff very helpful. Richard went out of his way to help with information about the hotel and the local area.

Review 79:breakfast was a bit chaotic and disjointed . being locked out of the main building on our last night was disappointing . having to cram 3 adults and a 13 year old into one room was interesting.

Review 80:Good welcome , lovely setting . fantastic bar and resturant

Review 81:A quaint Mill house and annexe buildings set in a pleasant quiet location next to a canal and river. We ate dinner in the bar on the evening we stayed at the hotel and it was a lovely meal. The food and wine were most enjoyable, very reasonably priced, the staff were very friendly. The room we stayed in was clean and fresh and we loved the little touches that had been added to the room that added just the right ambiance. We chatted with the owners (over breakfast) and found them to be an extremely pleasant and dedicated hard working couple, who are totally focused on making their guests stay a pleasant experience. We will definitely be returning.

Review 82:Some noise from Stansted airport in the morning (but then, it's also a convenient place to stay to catch a flight!) - but not a serious problem.

Review 83:Friendly reception, fascinating old mill building. Comfy room with adequate facilities, immaculately clean. Super quality, good value evening meal. Very quiet overnight and excellent breakfast. We will come here again!

Review 84:It is more an observation than a dislike. The rooms are in need of upgrading but this work is ongoing and the owners are doing the best as quickly as they can.

Review 85:An excellent location and a beautiful property. The service is superb and staff are all very genuinely friendly. Though I did not eat the food coming outlooked fantastic and the diners were certainly enjoying it.

Review 86:Wallpaper hanging off walls in bedroom curtains hanging off track power points behind units you have to pull bed out to plug I phone lead in cant see tv from bed you have to pull bed 5ft from wall to see tv no hair drier for my partner thick dust over back of bed no soap very cheap t bags old hand cream in bathroom decor very dated but they don't show that one Internet they show very up to date clean room and shower room also shower door leaks so when you get out water over floor wasn't worth 57 quid wouldn't stay there again stayed in hallingbury manor saturday night 3 pound more and it's stunning little hallingbury rip off they should put the room we had on Internet let people see that !

Review 87:Bed that's it

Review 88:We needed overnight accommodation in the London area so we stuck a pin on the map and found a gem. The mill was all that was said about it and more. Set in tranquil countryside the spended white mill sits on the boarder between Essex and Hampshire with views over a narrow boat marina and only a couple of miles from the M11. Richard and Miranda welcomed us like family and we enjoyed a pre diner drink with them in the comfy bar. The meal was beautifuly presented on sylish crockery, the candle lit table beside the enormous mill wheel all added to the ambiance. Attention to detail making all the difference, like the little milk bottle on the breakfast table and the gingham cover on the butter dish. A truly delightful experience, Richard and Miranda and staff went the extra mile. Thank you, we will be back. Keith and Kay

Review 89:The room was a bit up in the gods and difficult to get to carrying luggage , it was on the small side and the shower room was tiny .

Review 90:The hotel was an old mill very quirky , it was run in a shabby chic vintage style which we like the breakfastwas excellent mine hosts were very welcoming and it was nice and quiet .

Review 91:Single glazed windows do make the room cold, but the radiator takes care of it. Water pressure in the shower isn't the best, but I assume that can't be helped due to location

Review 92:Location Food Service Original mill wheel intact An excellent place to stay!

Review 93:Hard to find in the dark, not well illuminated from the lane. Our accommodation was in the annexe, which I don't think was mentioned when we booked. The Mill is being refurbished so I feel the price charged reflects this.

Review 94:Picturesque location in the daylight, lovely atmosphere in the bar/restaurant during the evening. Nice friendly welcome by the family owners. Our daughters room was refurbished, ours was a bit old fashioned but comfy, warm and with plentiful hot water.

Review 95:Very difficult to find in the dark. Would also be helpful to have low lighting in car park. Not really suitable for anyone with a disability as road.

Review 96:This is a lovely old mill. Loved the restaurant and the spacious breakfast room. Liked location by canal\ river. Friendly and helpful owner and family.

Review 97:Very reasonable price, and good breakfast. had a real out of the way feel even though very convenient for Stansted. the bar even has the workings of the mill as a feature, so made for an interesting stay

Review 98:Finding it was tricky sat nav use p/code CM22 7QS otherwise end up Old Mill Lane 2mls away! Also outside lighting a little sparse when arriving in the dark.

Review 99:Quiet location, great food and friendly staff. Free wifi a must for business travellers.

Review 100:Very welcoming family run bed and breakfast. Restaurant has great food at reasonable prices. Rooms undergoing refurb but existing ones are basic but ok

Review 101:My roomwas a little small for 8 nights but I was very happy to be there and I had a lovely view

Review 102:this is a family run hotel and as a woman on her own i felt extremly comfortable, safe & welcomed. The location in the counrty on the canal is so pretty. The small restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the food is good.

Review 103:Not much to gripe about. Rooms are in process of refurbishing. Ours had not been done but it was spotless and that's all we wanted. Will be back in spring

Review 104:Great location. Seemed like we were in the middle of no-where. Great place for a short get away. Owners very friendly, their son also took it apon himself to play football with our 3yr old. Food good, service good. Big thumbs up.

Review 105:accommodation could be better, Carpets looking worn, shower barely adequate. Sometimes difficult to find anyone available to ask about things.

Review 106:lovely setting good food staff friendly

Review 107:Ensuite bathroom only to be used by slender people, take your bath gel, soap and body lotion with you as there is none.

Review 108:Former mill, very atmospheric, very quiet setting in the middle of nowhere, good to find your inner peace - still situated near to Stansted Airport. Dinner and breakfast well presented, to be recommended.

Review 109:the rooms were very small and dated-I couldn't turn off the radiator. The toilets and shower room combination was tiny. Not great value - for the money

Review 110:Location was lovely and bar were good

Review 111:The uncomfortable bed and the not very fresh breakfast. The bacon had been warmed up in the microwave. It was as hard as a rock. So was the toasts.

Review 112:Quietness

Review 113:Two flights of steps to my room and a very small 'bathroom'. For the price I paid, however, this was not a problem.

Review 114:Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely food and lovely comfy bed.

Review 115:No products in the bathroom and I'd packed my shower gel in my case which was in the car!

Review 116:Lovely food in the bar, the staff were great and I had an excellent nights sleep, just what I needed before an early flight!

Review 117:The postcode is for another mill lane a couple of miles away. A bit better signage directing to the hotel. Bathroom was a bit small

Review 118:I have to stay i cant fault this place for totally relaxation. The location is great if you want to escape a busy a busy life. It is very picturesque. The room that i stayed in was very clean and tidy . I had a lovely view out over the canal. My partners parents also astayed at the hotel and loved it. The stay were brilliant helpful and friendly I would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Review 119:We were made to feel very welcome on checking in and although the owners are still in the process of refurbishing the rooms we had no complaints. Everything was spotlessly clean and the food was excellent. All in all great value for money and in a lovely quiet location too.

Review 120:The place needs a total re-furbishment including an up to date comfort with modern facilities. It doesn't need a lot of room perfume - just open the windows with fresh air.

Review 121:Excellent location, good value for money and friendly staff. We didn't have breakfast so can not comment on the food.

Review 122:Single bed yuk. Teeny weeny pod, couldn't even face attempting to use the shower. Landlord too busy talking to another couple to even acknowledge me which was very rude, I was actually going to ask to stay another night but didn't appreciate being ignored so I checked out and left.

Review 123:Pretty location, great value for money, landlady very kind on phone when I explained I needed late check-in

Review 124:The bathroom was tiny, but we coped for two nights and the owners have plans to make several improvements. Be patient with them, this is great value for money.

Review 125:Friendly owners and staff. Peacefulness. Lovely quirky hotel and delightful surroundings.

Review 126:The room needs updating a bit but the bed was very comfortable. The restaurant could do with a vamp up. Can't really complain though.

Review 127:As we came up to the mill we were so surprised that we had a lovely place to stay for reasonable money. What a beautiful setting and place. Breakfast was first class too.would recommend and stay there again.

Review 128:Tiny capsule bathroom- not much room to manoeuvre but manageable. Best to avoid if very tall or bigger build - if so go for rooms in house until these are replaced.

Review 129:Lovely comfy beds, picturesque quiet location, helpful friendly staff, good food, very reasonable price. Will be great when refurb is finished.

Review 130:new owners are struggling with years of neglect. Many rooms need a little TLC and it appears the prices are up to cater for this. toilet leaked for three days during our stay.

Review 131:nice location for quite weekend.... need a vehicle for any sight seeing

Review 132:Our group was visiting relatives who have a canal boat. It was great to be able to do day trips on the river, and then to walk across the fields to the mill for a good night's sleep!

Review 133:Weather was poor & lightning strike caused numerous problems electrically. Was shown to 3 different rooms before being settled into a room. The owner generously gave us a £10 discount but thought it was £60 for the room but our deal was £50 so we did'nt actually get it, but still a nice gesture.

Review 134:Nice location with potential to improve with new owners

Review 135:Breakfast very poor. Evening meal average. Lovely room but poor fittings, no bath-mat, odd and small wardrobe, no sensibly located mirror, no place to plug in one bedside lamp. Only one window would open.

Review 136:Room. Location. Interesting place. Wine.

Review 137:No surprise really but we deliberately booked as it was near Stansted and had a morning flight . It's a bit noisy as it's in the take off path for airlines, and stansted express train is in the adjacent field. Overall this was outweighed by good points.

Review 138:The setting, absolutely gorgeous. The mill building. Restaurant Staff in evening very attentive and friendly. Afternoon walk by the canal bank to nearby village for a cold beer.
