Reviews for The Portland Hotel

Review 1:Radiator wouldn't come on initially so I was frozen when I went down for my meal, but it was fixed and warmer by the time I went back. Hole in bathroom floor was slightly worrying.

Review 2:Helpful staff. Good food. Nice breakfast room.

Review 3:The en suite window was a bit draughty , but to be fair we did have very high winds that night.

Review 4:Great bar atmosphere, friendly staff, ideal location for the show we attended at the Leas cliff hall which was right opposite. Bar meals were very good, and exceptional value for money.

Review 5:No lift, quite a climb up the stairs, small bathroom in the room I had.

Review 6:Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent; quiet (mostly) bar people down the street. Room was comfortable for one person. Good location to be able to walk along the front and look at the English channel.

Review 7:The pub gets loud on a Saturday night but there is a side door so you don't have to walk the gauntlet to get to your room. Didn't hear any if the noise once in hotel room.

Review 8:Location was perfect. Staff were great. Lovely hotel.

Review 9:the furnishings were tired and the room which was at the top of the building, wasn't very warm. i did talk to staff about this and something was done to the radiator but it still wasn't that warm.

Review 10:a great position for getting into town quickly on foot, close to lots of amenities. the price I paid for the room was good value and it was nice and quiet.

Review 11:Furnishings basic and had seen better days. Bathroom was tiny and the location was very noisy until quite late.

Review 12:Low cost and convenient for the Channel Tunnel.

Review 13:There was no heating in the room as the radiator didn't work so I was cold all night. Also very noisy being nest to A busy pub.

Review 14:Friendly staff and the room was clean.

Review 15:Slightly delapidated facilities. Little annoying things like the shower was very small and was impossible to test the water without the door being open, hence soaking the floor Also didn't have a shelf inside. Not the Hotel's fault, but at 6.30 a.m.an adjacent room had a wake up alarm that went off continuously for 1 hour. There was no phone in the room to report this!

Review 16:Excellent breakfast in an unhurried atmosphere.

Review 17:Initial entry into reception area - gaming machines, bar as the reception area. Not shown restaurant area - if one.

Review 18:Friendlyand helpful staff member signing us in.

Review 19:Room was at the top of building, long walk to car if you forgot something, no lift

Review 20:Location on sea front, easy for overnight prior to tunnel. Care was taken with towels, little treats in room, tea and coffee facility

Review 21:the bedroom is in need of a revamp and update, the bed was very unpleasant, bedding was very tired and in great need of updating.

Review 22:the staff was very welcoming and polite, the hotel is in a fantastic position right on the sea front and is a short walking distance to all amenities, the room was very warm with flat screen tv, hairdryer and pleasant breakfast with plenty of choice for everyone.

Review 23:I would not have any particular points of criticism. This is not a luxury hotel, by any standard, but considering the value for money dimension, one could not expect more.

Review 24:This is a no-frills, centrally located hotel, with acceptable facilities, free and fairly stable Wi-Fi and adequate breakfast.

Review 25:A bit of a climb up the stairs to the room but we were made aware of no lift

Review 26:The breakfast and the restaurant was very good. The staff very helpful. Good parking outside the hotel for £1.00

Review 27:Very noisy at night and bar staff not at all friendly , food in the restaurant not that goo. I was disappointed as i wanted somewhere to stay to visit my dad.

Review 28:very nice room and clean, breakfast good and staff at breakfast good.

Review 29:staff were very friendly & helpful esp the young lady who served breakfast every morning nothing was too much trouble for her, the same could be said for Donna who seems to manage the hotel again she was concerned as I have mobility problems if I could manage the stairs down to the breakfast room, our room was a ground floor room which was very spacious ,clean & comfortable, & no problem with noise from the bar as I first thought there might be.

Review 30:The breakfast could be improved with more different pastries maybe.

Review 31:We did like the good size and clean room. The staffs were really nice. It was good experience for us.

Review 32:I couldn't log into the Wifi, . I didn't complain about it, because I had to go downstairs into crowded bar, which I didn't want to do. The toilet flush, didn't work.

Review 33:The location.

Review 34:We stayed in a room at top of hotel up 3 sets of very steep stairs - not a problem for us - but be aware of this when booking and request a room on the lower floors - there is no lift !

Review 35:Great location parking right outside hotel, nice outdoor bar area and lovely staff

Review 36:Nothing

Review 37:Absolutely everything. Ignore the fact there is no lift it's only 3 floors. Ignore the creaking floor boards it's a beautiful old building. The Portland is definitely on my must stay again list. I have tried many hotels in Folkestone and this one is rated very highly by me.

Review 38:I think the mattress need to be renewed as it was a big dip in it which gives a bad back. Toilet needs looking at had to wait for it to fill up for 30 minutes or more

Review 39:was clean and friendly

Review 40:Parking dreadful took nearly an hour to find a space, paid a £1.00 for the space to hotel as no free parking there. On the paper work they say parking guaranteed! Room classed as executive! it was large with two settes that did not match, old 30's furniture that had seen better days! Nothing matched, modern wallpaper on one wall, bedding and curtains that didn't match each other a complete mess. The towels were old, hard and had bleach stains on them certainly not soft fluffy ones. Breakfast ok. Will not stay again if giving free!

Review 41:Near to a friend we were visiting

Review 42:Top floor is lots of stairs .

Review 43:Close to the channel tunnel. Very helpful staff even stored a bike overnight and were available at 6am to open the garage and return it to us! Good little takeaway breakfast too.

Review 44:It wasn't a problem for us, but if stairs are a problem for you then ask for a ground floor room as there is no lift.

Review 45:It's an individual hotel not like the chain hotels. Exceptionally friendly staff, lovely room, excellent breakfast, excellent food and the large verandah gives the place a European feel. Also excellent location for the beach and town, plus easy cheap parking from the hotel £1 per 24hrs! . We will return.

Review 46:Bit tired in terms of decoration.

Review 47:Great stop over place. Staff really helpful and friendly. Clean, with good breakfast. Excellent value for money. Would use again.

Review 48:We made a mistake on booking but hadnt realised that we had put one person in each room. So we had to pay £67 for each room instead of £45 but staff were very helpful and friendly about it.

Review 49:The hotel was very good it practicaly ran itself. Thought the noise of the bar would wake us but couldnt barely hear it. Breakfast was lovely. Plenty of choices especially liked the fruit salad.

Review 50:Didn't like the fact I had to join the bar queue to check-in, as it was a busy, hot Sunday afternoon. Also, the email confirmation from the hotel was unprofessional with serious spelling mistakes.

Review 51:The room was comfy with everything you needed, including bottled water, biscuits and chocs.

Review 52:If you go out in the car you may lose the parking slot close to the hotel. Don't like margarine - would prefer butter but that is being picky

Review 53:Breakfast was a nice surprise - knew it was continental but the fresh fruit was lovely and the scrambled egg was good.

Review 54:No lift. My room was on top floor. Noisy hot water system.

Review 55:Bfast was great . Friendly staff.parking just outside for 1 pd..3 min walk town.coffee and biscuits in room

Review 56:warm beer, noisy room, I think the staff lived on the next floor up, heard an extractor fan most of the night every time someone used the loo, some poor excuse for butter, awful breakfast

Review 57:nothing

Review 58:Stairs. Busy bar.

Review 59:The old town is great with super pubs and a great fish and chip restaurant. The hotel is basic but does the job. We had a top floor room which was a little like scaling Everest as there is no lift. Room was basic but tidy. Breakfast was good though.

Review 60:Leaving!!!! I would have happily stayed much longer, unfortunately this wasn't possible

Review 61:Cleanliness comfort facilities staff, food all excellent? So good in fact that we booked to stay again while we were there!! Particularly commend Lee the chef!

Review 62:As in rating of room above. Also a lot of stairs to climb and noisy through the night. We were in room 12 and there appeared to be3 other rooms in very close vicinity.

Review 63:Breakfast.

Review 64:Room could have done with a mirror other than the bathroom as I was there for a wedding and found it difficult to do my make-up and check my outfit. The hot water took ages to get warm.

Review 65:Car parking was a lottery and we just dropped lucky when a couple moved out after we had sat waiting for about a half hour.

Review 66:Easy to get to and get on our way in the morning.

Review 67:Intermittent loss of power in room. Damp patch on wall, probably due to roof leak.

Review 68:The location is very good for walking to Folkestone centre, harbour, Lees Cliff Pavilion and the Undercliff gardens. Outside covered bar area.

Review 69:The lack of a lift when staying on the top floor is not ideal but understandable for an older building.

Review 70:It was convenient, clean and the staff were accommodating. accommodating

Review 71:Bedding: The pillows weren't great and still using old fashioned blankets instead of duvets - but clean.

Review 72:Continental breakfast was good and also included scrambled eggs on toast. Our particular executive room had it's own lobby which gave us good sound proofing from stairwell.

Review 73:Not many problems at all just that the only staff around were those in ajoining bar where you check in, which can get very busy on a Saturday night. Luckily we were out late anyway otherwise noise from bar would have been very irritating.

Review 74:Great location, friendly staff, clean, nice breakfast, good value

Review 75:Bathroom finish poor! No coat hooks for dressing gown etc. towel rail required near the sink! Bar decor very 'cold' and spars!

Review 76:Room was large and well furnished. Staff were excellent!

Review 77:could not find a bad word to describe this place it was excellent.

Review 78:friendly staff who were efficient and courteous. the price of the room was ridiculously low.there was no lift with the room but I go upstairs to bed every night anyway so it was no hardship.

Review 79:The room needed a lick of paint and a new carpet but was clean, light and spacious. It needs to be stated when booking if a room is on the 3rd floor as this would be too many stairs for elderly people.

Review 80:The location right on the seafront. A wide selection at the buffet breakfast. Very friendly staff. Lovely little bar below.sound proofing good so music from the bar was not a problem.

Review 81:Got a bit cold thru the night

Review 82:I had the executive room for 41 quid. Total Bargain, I doubt it's that price in peek season! My friend had the double room for 27! Very clean and tidy

Review 83:Nothing was not to like

Review 84:I liked the friendly ness of everybody at the hotel. The location was excellent. The breakfast was very good. Everything about this hotel was excellent I would highly recommend.

Review 85:Only problem is that these economy rooms are on the 3rd floor up several steep stair flights and there is no lift. I'm recovering well now at home!

Review 86:For £102 for 3 nights including breakfast and 3 days parking, I wasn't expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised.

Review 87:The lovely high ceilinged room was large, well furnished and very comfortable. The car parking was very close by and cheap but above all owner Lee was a delight to be served by at breakfast and to talk to in general.

Review 88:Not our style of bar or restaurant, but there are alternatives locally to suit all tastes.

Review 89:Location and value for money. Good light breakfast - not the "full English", but scrambled eggs, toast, cereals, fruit all good.

Review 90:Door to bathroom was stiff and hard to close and light over washbasin didn't work. Breakfast was a bit dismal. Woken up at 1 a.m. by rowdy fellow guests.

Review 91:The location was good for the channel tunnel and the sea and town. Room was comfortable and quite spacious. Staff member who booked us in was pleasant and efficient.

Review 92:We had booked a standard double on the top floor which would have been fine apart from obvious signs and strong odour of damp. The bed was not comfortable and the TV remote was filthy.

Review 93:We asked to change rooms the next morning and the staff were obviously aware of the issues with room 11. We were given a lovely room which would definitely have cost more but made our last night much more comfortable. Breakfast also very good.

Review 94:The comfort of the mattress on the bed was well past is best - very saggy and soft. The towels still very hard

Review 95:Very pleasant staff. Ideal location for Channel Tunnel Easy to Park

Review 96:My single room was freezing due to failure to check if radiator was working. I It was repaired but bad impression created. The bed could have been more comfortable too.

Review 97:breakfast choice and service was very good

Review 98:Bar downstairs bit noisy late at night and kicking out time, plus noisy smokers outside in smoking area. Towels are in desperate need of changing - far too small and could do with a clean! Ours were dirty. Rooms have tried to be modernised but could do with a bit more attention. Visited in February and room was freezing as only 1 radiator (on a timer setting out of our control) to heat the large space - luckily there were some blankets in the room to wrap around us!

Review 99:Great spacious superior double room with plasma TV and free WiFi which we didn't have any trouble connecting to. Friendly staff and nice continental selection at breakfast. Good location too with free parking tickets issued for parking outside hotel.

Review 100:Great location for The Leas Cliff Hall. Clean rooms and smooth check in process in the Skuba Bar. Oh and free Wi-Fi! Don't expect luxury and you won't be disappointed. I would definitely stay again.

Review 101:Parking expensive but no fault of hotel. Don't know how local people put up with constant rip off!!

Review 102:Spacious room with bay widow overlooking pier. Freshly redecorated. Beautiful breakfast room with English breakfast to match. Excellent value.

Review 103:Lovely frontage which on New Year's Eve we weren't allowed to use. Would be worth checking in summer if that applies to every Friday and Saturday

Review 104:Lovely room. Really spacious and comfortable. Amazing food - love the mussels. Lovely breakfast

Review 105:The location is right by Leas Hall, so can be a little noisy depending on what event they have on. On the other hand, if you are in Folkestone to see a gig at Leas Hall, then this is the perfect place to stay!

Review 106:The staff are really friendly and and helpful. The room was perfectly fine for the money. I had an evening meal which the barman brought up to my room so I could dodge the karaoke night in the bar downstairs. Food was good. I will stay here again.

Review 107:Top floor room was a killer, lots of stairs.

Review 108:The location was great with easy access to the main shopping area, breakfast had plenty of choice and the waitress was helpful. Excellent one night stop over.

Review 109:sheets and blankets, would have preferred a duvet

Review 110:good choice at breakfast friendly staff excellent service large room king size bed good location

Review 111:Wanted a bath,only a shower ! l

Review 112:small friendly hotel, easy access to street.well located off Leas Cliff.

Review 113:Noise from street in early hours

Review 114:Staff very attentive Email before trip outlining booking in at bar, stairs, parking Excellent value for a budget room i felt that i was given same service and a valued customer

Review 115:No dedicated parking. If spaces are free then an overnight cost is £1 which is reasonable if you wish to stay beyond 8am in the morning. Limited cooked breakfast but plenty of cold buffet available

Review 116:Comfortable and well located. Very good service from the staff Free Wi-Fi with good signal strength

Review 117:shower a little dated, unable to adjust flow stairs- if in the standard rooms be prepared to negotiate three flights of stairs

Review 118:breakfast was very good. room was clean bar was good and steady trade even in october

Review 119:Originally booked hotel as believed it had a car park - or at least free parking. It didn't, although parking was only £1 for 24hrs. Check in procedure a bit unusual and disjointed. Think a full cooked breakfast could be included for the price. Not proper negatives really.

Review 120:Staff very friendly and sorted a mistake on check in very satisfactorily. Food service a little slow - but very good when it arrived. Unfortunately weather was poor so was unable to walk on the leas in the evening.

Review 121:If you're not on a motorcycle parking could be tricky

Review 122:A good value budget hotel close to the euro tunnel, easy to findfriendly staff and plentiful breakfast.

Review 123:Bar area was a bit tired. Dinner served in the bar was good but only a bar table was available indoors .

Review 124:Staff pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was excellent, good selection of food and choice of something hot. Dining room was lovely.

Review 125:The location was ideal; not too close to the town centre but wonderful for an early morning/evening stroll along the promenade. Waiting staff at breakfast were very friendly and I will certainly eat in the Scuba restaurant next time I'm in Folkestone.

Review 126:Stairs to room were very steep. Not for the faint hearted. Decor a bit dated.

Review 127:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 128:The room we booked for two was much too small for two people, no clothes hanging or sitting space other than the beds. We had to check in at the bar next door which could be very off-putting for older visitors. The bed was wobbly and quite uncomfortable. We had to lock the door with the mortice lock from the inside to secure it while asleep. Maybe my room wasn't typical but my feeling was this was a hotel that hasn't invested enough in routine maintenance and renovation. What a shame because with a bit of investment it could be a gem.

Review 129:The location of the hotel is great, right on the seafront. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was quite nice with a buffet, fruit and freshly cooked dishes.

Review 130:We were on the top floor with no lift.

Review 131:The hotel location was fine The staff welcomed us as we got there We had the evening meal and a drink in the bar Friendly place to be

Review 132:No lift ,had to collect keys at the bar, resturant was in the cellar no stairs to that either xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx- xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxcccccccccccccfffcfcccdddxxxxxxxxx- xxccccc

Review 133:Yes, the reception is the 'Scuba Bar', but if you don't mind that you find a great value for money hotel that is about 25m from the entrance to the Leas Cliff Hall. The Scuba Bar has friendly, energetic staff, great food and good beer. For my stay at Euromilitaire this was perfect.

Review 134:Like a few other people, it is a bit uncomfortable checking in at the bar, especially on a busy night like Fridays/Saturdays but when you know what to expect, it is worth it for the stay.

Review 135:The owner and the staff. Location good with reasonable parking availability. Handy for Channel Tunnel. Restaurants close by. The buffet breakfast was excellent! Freshly prepared fruit salad! Scrambled egg on toasts is very nice too!

Review 136:Some late night door banging but didn't last too long.

Review 137:Excellent value and friendly owners. Left very early for eurotunnel andthey made a breakfast takeaway box that was excellent. Would stay againfor short business trip or for eurotunnel.

Review 138:Although I had was fully aware that the rooms I had booked were on the top floor, and I was prepared for this, as my brother and I are both pensioners it would have been nice if the member had staff had offered help with our luggage.

Review 139:The rooms were comfortable and well-equipped. They were a little quirky and old-fashioned, but we liked that. As we were leaving early in the morning for the Channel Tunnel they provided us with a packed breakfast, which was thoughtful.

Review 140:the stairs! but that's me

Review 141:easy to find, good value - room was comfortable and clean, food was fine and staff were friendly - would recommend for anyone looking for a good value stopover for the chunnel or ferry

Review 142:There wasn't much to dislike.

Review 143:Ideally situated overlooking the Leas. Perfect for the town centre or for quiet walks along the sea front. Hotel has it's own bar and restaurant. Most important there are parking bays outside the hotel and it's possible to buy a hotel guest's parking permit for a £1 a day.
