Reviews for Bedford Hotel

Review 1:Walls are too thin, next door talking keeping me awake. Extractor fan in room 5 couldn't be switched off. Very noisy

Review 2:Breakfast is good, presentation of the room is very good

Review 3:Most of staff friendly helpful but the night staff closed bar early 10.45pm with no notice and our milk was gone off in our room so could only uv a glass of tap water as no staff around when we went to look for them all gone out on a party we were told.

Review 4:Hotel and room lovely

Review 5:On arrival we were allocated a room on the ground floor which was designed for disabled travellers. As was taken aback as both myself and my friend are able bodied . I feel that the hotel staff SHOULD make sure that travellers require such a room. Moved to another room which was SO hot due to it being near the boiler room! I am sure if we had been given a different room on arrival I would not be writing this.

Review 6:Location of the hotel is brilliant for the town and for getting out to Dartmoor and Plymouth. Parking off road was great as parking in Tavistock can be difficult at times.

Review 7:I absolutely love this hotel. It is characterful, welcoming, comfortable and very well appointed. A delightful combination of period charm and all mod cons. The staff are superb - nothing is too much trouble. Great vfm. I cannot commend or recommend it highly enough. Fab-u-lous!

Review 8:This time on ground floor so under the stairs, etc., so a little noisy with the old floorboards.

Review 9:Have stayed before and like the friendly atmosphere and great location. Liked the different dining room and really good dinner, the food is good here.

Review 10:Lovely staff, well appointed room, great bed and crisp sheets. I went to a gig at the Wharf which was just down the road from the hotel. this hotel is perfect for exploring Dartmoor from. excellent old style hotel.

Review 11:I didn't have a bad experience, but I think the hotel isn't as grand as it is cracked up to be, I would place it as 'FAIR'. Never the less, I would stay there again, and I would recommend it to others.

Review 12:It was a convenient location for the purpose for which I went to Tavistock

Review 13:On arrival in the room the waste bin had not been emptied and there was no toilet paper, even though the room was ready for occupancy. On the first night the heat in the room was unbearable making it impossible to sleep. We were subsequently told that it was above the boiler room and were moved the following night. The in parts the appearance of the hotel was tired. We originally booked for 3 nights but left after 2.

Review 14:The location of the hotel was very good. The staff were helpful The breakfasts were very good

Review 15:Rooms are looking tired. Wallpaper was partially peeling in the room. Lack of Hot water in the evening. Really needs some investment in decorating throughout

Review 16:Staff very pleasant and helpful

Review 17:Friendly staff and very good food. Situated right in the centre of Tavistock which has wonderful individual shops. Comfortable hotel if a little dated.

Review 18:Poor standard of housekeeping, had to ask for 2nd hand towel, rubbish from previous guest in the info folder, including a soiled tissue, behind bathroom radiator filthy

Review 19:Staff excellent as was the breakfast, good location

Review 20:Lack of lift to upper floors only disable lift to reception floor

Review 21:Location to Town centre, market and near to Cotele House National Trust property & Dartmoor National Park. The hotel staff were exceptionally kind friendly & cheerful most important as I had taken my elderly mother there for a treat as she had always wanted to stay there.

Review 22:Room to hot and told there was a fan in room. Some parts of hotel tatty and worn Room very small and only a small shower in room not value for money

Review 23:food was nice but over priced

Review 24:The room was a little warm but still very comfortable. But I am really nit picking as I will always stay here when in the area.

Review 25:I am a regular guest at The Bedford and it was lovely and friendly as always. The breakfast was excellent and the room large and comfortable.

Review 26:In just a few places there were rather tortuous corridors and steps. Some of the charming period features on the first floor have been marred by the insertion of ugly fire-resisting partitions. But that's the inherent problem with a building of this nature

Review 27:The hotel has a charming and traditional character balanced with a couple of well detailed new alterations. The food is excellent and well presented.

Review 28:Restricted car parking when we arrived

Review 29:Special request was arranged without fuss or extra charge I had a small problem with an element of my meal - problem was addressed instantly and we were compensated in kind very efficiently - staff very friendly, attentive and efficient. Lovely stay.

Review 30:Did not have a bad experience but thought the rotting wooden window frames were slightly off putting.

Review 31:Very conveniently situated for our needs. Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Loved the welcoming feel of the Hotel as we arrived.

Review 32:Felt the room was "shabby" - have had better quality at ye olde Premier Inn for half the cost!!!our room overlooked absolutely nothing but a roof- disappointed as the hotel itself was lovely

Review 33:Very helpful, cheerful staff who gave ideas of where to go/what to do and unobtrusively enquired if all was ok. They gave clear, concise information and they were very polite.

Review 34:Comfortable and relaxed, very efficient but friendly staff, lovely combination of old and very modern (i.e. the dining room). Very good rate for single occupancy when booked in advance...and a lot secure space in the basement to store cycles (i was cycling!!)

Review 35:We arrived late due to a flat tyre, and all staff where extremely helpful in supplying late refreshments even though it was after hours! Thanks all.. Breakfast was very well presented and fresh! Well done.....

Review 36:Think price was high for quality of the room which was small and no space for the case, refurbished bathroom was lovely. Communal areas looked a little run down.

Review 37:Location was excellent. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 38:The location of the hotel was excellent. I was allocated a room on the top floor but the next morning I felt the stairs were proving a bit much and asked if a room on a lower floor was available. The receptionist, Brett was very accommodating and I had my request dealt with very quickly. I was very happy with my new room.

Review 39:It is an old hotel so having to go up and down stairs could be problem for some people. The carpet was also rather stained.

Review 40:Excellent evening meal and breakfast. Very nice room with four poster bed. The free Wi Fi was also appreciated.

Review 41:There was bathing you like at all, the room was small and uncomfortableand the mould on the windows made my daughter sick....

Review 42:Yes the staff Wereham to busy to help with anything, my car was struckby another vehicle in the car park at some time between midnight and0610. The manager had said she would look at the cctv however wasclearly covering for a member of staff or friend because she claimed tosee nothing. I was then over charged on the bar bill for food and drinksI had not had, clearly someone using my room number... The breakfast wasdiscussing, not even pigs would eat that. And then the room originallybooked for two adults and a child was changed on our arrival to oneadult!!! The rate of 140 for two nights was changed to 140 per night.Although they did agree to put the rate down to 100 and then 70 after avery heated email!!!! Overall the worst experience in any hotel ever! And I travel all the time.Never go here!!!!!

Review 43:My bedroom was noisy (traffic) and could do with some updating.

Review 44:Good convenient location. All the staff were very pleasant and friendly. Hotel public rooms very good. Good choice at breakfast. Nice breakfast.

Review 45:Room was tad musty. Noisy function which was not mentioned at check in disturbed our stay beyond midnight. Very slow service at dinner and breakfast, understaffed and lack of tables (breakfast).

Review 46:Good location. Excellent quality food, breakfast and dinner. Convenient free large car park (for town centre location).

Review 47:Service at breakfast not good. Second morning no table available so had to eat in the bar, felt like a nuisance to them. Room was next to main road so noisy. Hotel looks tatty, better outside than in.

Review 48:Good location for shopping.

Review 49:Room a little small but ok for weekend stay.

Review 50:The Bedford Hotel is like a mini castle and our room was above the front door (20). No view, just the battlements - loved it! Great modern bathroom. Tea/coffee facilities, great food. Young, friendly staff.

Review 51:Were upgraded to a room with a four poster bed with a lovely view of the churchyard. Excellent food and service, friendly and pleasant staff, very nice breakfasts. Car park was spacious. All in all an enjoyable few days in Tavistock Devon.

Review 52:There is nothing to dislike about this hotel. The staff are all very pleasant, most helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. The food is also excellent and the rooms are very comfortable. The hotel is kept very clean and tidy. The location is perfect for visiting Dartmoor and the surrounding area. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It's history is very interesting. It is also great that they allow dogs at the hotel. I don't have a dog myself but it was lovely to see those at the hotel.

Review 53:The evening meal was not great, it was pretending to be something it clearly was not. could not work out whether it was pub style food or what, certainly not gourmet. Will i go again, i will have a long hard think about that.

Review 54:Lovely old rustic hotel, great staff really friendly and helpful.

Review 55:There did not seem to be a lot of parking available, so once parked I didn't feel inclined to travel very far.

Review 56:The hotel was in an excellent location and easy to find. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 57:If you are fussy about pillows take your own, the hotel pillows are quite firm.

Review 58:The hotel is in a good location. We had a nice meal in the hotel. The room was very nice and comfortable.

Review 59:Nothing major wrong, but other than the building, nothing stood out as exceptional, especially given the price. Room on the small side, food menu sounded good but execution only average.

Review 60:Lovely old building close to historic town centre. Real ale in the bar and garden area for summer time drinks and conversation.

Review 61:It was Ok but all a bit sad.

Review 62:The evening chef was excellent and he/she certainly knew how to cook. The hotel should make more of him/her as the restaurant was empty and those who were there ate fish and chips. They missed a tasty trick. Advertise the chef!

Review 63:No safety (grab handles) around spa bath; an important consideration for more mature visitors

Review 64:The calm hotel environment, its central location, cheerfulness and competence of staff in reception and restaurant and overall ambience. A return visit - and will be repeated!

Review 65:Old building so decor a little tired in some areas (nice and of the time, but some areas could do with a lick of paint). Check in not 24hours, although staff contacted me and organised for my arrival.

Review 66:Great location in the middle of town Ample parking Room a good size and well presented. Breakfast was excellent. Staff exceptionally helpful.

Review 67:Car park locked overnight (good but reduces flexibility). Restaurant staff could do with a little more catering service training, but didn't detract from the enjoyment.

Review 68:Traditional and friendly hotel. Restaurant lovely.

Review 69:Dusty skirting boards low shelfs & table legs. Noisey extractor fan, no bath mat. When we have been before the room has always been spotless.

Review 70:Quiet room, plenty of hot water and being in the centre of Tavy. Nice breakfast & freindly staff.

Review 71:No lifts in the hotel but the staff were helpful with luggage and there was a small mobility lift from the car park to the entrance area. Dedicated porter would have improved matters.

Review 72:Old-fashioned feel to the hotel in the centre of a busy market town. I was expecting a single room but got a small double which seemed recently refurbished - excellent. Pleasant friendly staff.

Review 73:Furnishings and carpets becoming rather tired. The absence of a lift was a problem for my wife with an injured foot, not helped by our request for a higher room! Cases were taken up and down by the friendly porters.

Review 74:Very convenient for everywhere in Tavistock. Helpful staff and traditional ambience. The new stairs from the parking area are so much better than the old iron staircase.

Review 75:The room was very disappointing, small, far too hot in the bedroom and freezing in the bathroom. The bedroom window had to be kept open with a block of wood and the bathroom window wouldn't close at all. The bathroom fans surrounding us in other rooms were very noisy all night, we had to use a long pole for the window to switch ours off, and our room was above the public toilet which meant we could hear the hand dryer going off every minute.

Review 76:great location, attentive staff and good food. It's been a fourth visit to the hotel with great rooms allocated to us in the past.

Review 77:I find the stairs a problem. The stairs are hard for me. The lift up from parking to reception failed to work.

Review 78:Central to Tavistock . Good parking with security cameras. Very pleasant staff. Food good.

Review 79:Unfortunately the hotel could not offer a full English breakfast because of an electrical fault in the kitchen which is not their fault.

Review 80:Friendly receptionist, location of hotel

Review 81:The noise - in Room 21 (and other rooms in the immediate vicinity no doubt), the noise for the downstairs bar went on well into hours of darkness. Room got quite stuffy (could not open the very old and decaying windows) and the room hadn't been thoroughly cleaned (including Malteser wrappers next to the bed).

Review 82:The location - close to Tavistock Market and Town Centre

Review 83:Two items were added to my bar bill which were not mine. Only noticed after I had left the hotel. I was not unduly troubled but will pay closer attention in future.

Review 84:The hotel was very busy with two large functions on the first night of my stay but the few guests dining in were not neglected and service was v.good.

Review 85:The room was a bit dated and very small, a broken window pain and in need of a tidy up on the paintwork in the bathroom. No glasses or bottled water provided which in my experience are usually expected for a room of this price.

Review 86:The location was the primary choice for us as we were attending a birthday meal at the hotel. The food for this was really good as was breakfast

Review 87:Evening meals awful. On both occasions whilst staying have had to complain. Very disappointing.

Review 88:Liked the overall surroundings and comfort. Breakfast great! Dining room lovely .

Review 89:There is nothing we did not like, but I would have liked to have some information as to who the portraits were of.

Review 90:We have stayed there by choice twice. We really enjoy the ambiance and the fact that it has its own identity - not like a lot of the modern hotels. We will definitely stay there again. As it was raining most of the time we found the shops very handy!

Review 91:Wifi was slow but probably due to being in Devon than hotel. Breakfast service was okay but not great.

Review 92:Location was ideal, right in the centre of Tavistock. Check-in and out both very smooth with polite staff.

Review 93:When booking the room it was mentioned as being reduced to £89 from £140.00. I certainly would not have paid £140. Not even worth £89 we paid. We were given a room on the top floor (attic room) nothing like the photo on your website. We had to go up over two flights of stairs (no lift) with a heavy suitcase (good job my husband is quite fit for 66 years old). No offer of help with luggage. After travelling hundreds of miles we wanted a hot shower and something to eat. The water was cold. Telephoned reception and they said they would ring us back. Did not. Went to reception an hour later and the receptionist was less than helpful. Were told we had to leave the water running for a while as the room was on the top floor. I said we had left it running for well over 5 minutes. What a waste of water. The same thing happened the next morning. Also there was no lock on the bathroom door. Breakfast was a bit dried up and below average. Must re-emphasise the reception staff were less than helpful. With all this we then decided to eat out and not in the hotel. As the room was well below par then we did not want to try the restaurant or bar just in case. We have stayed in many hotels with same rating and above and can honestly say this was the worst

Review 94:Location

Review 95:Having to leave.

Review 96:The total ambience and friendliness of all the staff especially as they all wear smiles as they go about their duties. Nothing is to much during a highly recommended stay at the Bedford

Review 97:The walls are very thin. The guests in the next room had a dog which insisted on banging its tail against the wall (it really was a dog as I could hear the owner telling it to go to sleep. Unless I was next to the dungeon....). Room temperature couldn't be adjusted, had to get up at 3am to open the window - in mid December

Review 98:Very friendly and accomodative staff. Restaurant good standard and value

Review 99:Very friendly staff and comfortable surroundings. Food was excellent and with a 5* breakfast included my stay proved excellent value for money.Nice quiet rooms meant I had a great nights sleep ready for an early start.

Review 100:The climb to the top floor really is a struggle for me these days. Had hoped the new lift was going to be for everyone and up to the top! At least it is helpful for luggage up to the reception.

Review 101:Always great to stay at the Bedford. It's down to the staff who are always helpful. Also location and good if old fashioned facilities. Makes you feel at home.

Review 102:Every floor board creaked, very tired decor, dirty tablecloth at breakfast.no help offered with bag despite being on first floor.

Review 103:Location is great and staff pleasant

Review 104:The fact that the residents lounge was used as a venue for committee meetings much to the inconvenience of hotel guests

Review 105:Comfortable environment and an excellent breakfast

Review 106:An expat most of my life, this hotel could not have exemplified the 'British' experience more than it did. A stunning and historically important building, situated in the heart of an equally historic and picturesque town, the staff were welcoming, accommodating and extremely friendly throughout. The rooms were of a high standard. Breakfast however, although well cooked, might have included a wider range of cold buffet items.

Review 107:The hotel has a little bit of an air of faded gentility. We could have done with a queen- or king-sized bed in our room rather than the narrow double one we had.

Review 108:Location, friendliness of staff, fine breakfasts, cleanliness. Nice shower. Useful car parking.

Review 109:Bedroom cold heating Luke warm. So many stairs. When we arrived we were pointed in the direction of our room, if we had been sent in the opposite direction there were less stairs to climb.

Review 110:The Location, it was easy to walk around the town. A few nice pubs especially The Union Inn.

Review 111:Menu could be better .

Review 112:Great location , lots of life in the centre of Tavistock. Great room with a 4 poster.car park on site, great old we'll feel hotel , Fab breakfast . Free wi-fi Walking distance to all the restaurants .

Review 113:Fairly slow at the bar whenever there were more than a very few people waiting to be served. Very limited choice of bar food. Rather cramped bathroom in our room - No 19.

Review 114:Location in the centre of a beautiful old town. All staff, from "front of house", to restaurant, to those working behind the scenes in the bedrooms, were all very friendly and cheerful.

Review 115:Only one minor point, our room was very warm, even with the heating off and window open.

Review 116:Helpful and very friendly staff, excellent food and service, lovely clean and welcoming room. We had our dog with us and were delighted with his treats in our room. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you.

Review 117:Bathroom fan kept going about 10 minutes after the light was switchedoff (much too long) lack of lift although there was a disabled one fromcar park to ground floor. There are 2 staircases the one we were sent toinvolved going up 2 flights and then up and down 2 more whereas outsideour room was a second staircase, much wider and easier to manage.

Review 118:Large room, comfortable beds, good location in centre of town. Good carpark, friendly staff, good restaurant.

Review 119:Missed the fried bread at breakfast. Toiletries not great

Review 120:Warm friendly welcome. Extremely good comfortable bed . Good breakfast. Home from home We will go back very soon

Review 121:Internet needs to be modernised - outdated odd passcode system and weak signal in parts . Danger may become a little complacent as not much competition

Review 122:Friendly enthusiastic staff in central and traditional non-chain hotel.

Review 123:I had a single room on the ground floor. It was incredibly small and had not been decorated for many years. It looked very shabby. A coat of pain would make the world of difference. However bathroom clean and adequate. Tea and coffee ample and bed very comfortable.

Review 124:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The communal areas lovely with a relaxed old world charm smelling of polish. Parking good and a lift up to the ground floor from the car park excellent.

Review 125:Generally staff were very courteous, but I was refused a late evening meal by a member of staff 5min before the 'official' time for last orders - she insisted that my watch must have been wrong! I went elsewhere.

Review 126:the central location and public areas

Review 127:The old building can get quite hot as you would expect - room + halls get a bit stuffy

Review 128:Inner courtyard function room design Fantastic staff Private parking Bathroom quality/fittings

Review 129:Noise from the bar below and also traffic .

Review 130:Lovely roomy bedroom , lots of space to relax . Very comfy bed, sofa to watch TV and a large bathroom en-suite !

Review 131:Nothing!

Review 132:I arrived around 9pm but the staff were still smiling and fresh faced! Katie on reception was lovely. I was leaving early so couldn't have breakfast. Immediately she offered me a packed lunch! Sad I was only staying 2 nights thus time, but I will be back!

Review 133:for price of the room i expected alot more. Room was small and very basic, bed was bedding were uncomfortable.

Review 134:Staff were very nice and welcoming. Cooked breakfast so also very good.

Review 135:the room is a bit tired, more attention to detail needed i.e grouting round bath, bathroom door needs painting both sides, lights need dusting! we didn't eat in the evenings as not to our choice and limited menu, also we thought very expensive noise from bar over the road at 2am

Review 136:the bed was extremely comfortable hotel was in great position for town staff all extremely friendly and helpful breakfast choices very good but attention to presentation needed

Review 137:There was nothing we didn't dislike, except perhaps the carpets in the communal areas were all different. It would look better if they were all the same...!

Review 138:A lovely hotel in a prime position in Tavistock. Very comfortable with good sized bedrooms and bathrooms. Breakfast is to be recommended - especially the eggs benedict..! We will definitely stay there again

Review 139:Typical old British hotel, no lift, wobbly stairs, paint and carpet tatty in places, room (on the top floor) was way too hot even with the window open and a fan.

Review 140:Quirky hotel that I didn't want to like, but it just made me smile. The staff were great, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was modernised and clean. Best location in Tavistock,

The Fine Print

Some rooms can accommodate a dog for a fee of GBP 10 per night with prior arrangement.
