Set on its own picturesque grounds, this former coaching inn, with parts dating back to 1430, provides traditional accommodations and a luxurious spa in the historic Sussex market town of Midhurst.
Having been fully refurnished to provide all the comforts of a luxurious modern hotel, the Spread Eagle Hotel still retains many of its original features, including sloping floors, inglenook fireplaces and oak beams. The restaurant also features a beautiful stained glass window.
In contrast to the historic aspects of the hotel, the Spread Eagle offers a modern spa, complete with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym. Alternatively you can indulge with a personalized beauty treatment.

Reviews for Spread Eagle Hotel And Spa

Review 1:The radiator in my room was full of air and noisy - so, very little heat on the coldest night of the year so far. These need checking regularly - it is easy to use a radiator key to get rid of the air and make it work effectively. Otherwise a lovely room - the Blue room.

Review 2:The location, the lovely setting and bars, restaurant etc.

Review 3:The breakfast, which was included in the price, was particularly good. High quality food, plenty of it and very tasty. The gym was well-stocked with machines and weights and the staff were very attentive and helpful. My room was very comfortable and quiet at night.

Review 4:The jacuzzi was broken and no discount was offered. We weren't informed of this before booking despite ringing up to make further inquiries.

Review 5:Good food and comfy, cosy atmosphere

Review 6:Nothing! Everything was faultless.

Review 7:Friendly and very helpful staff. Wonderful ambience, fine furniture & decoration. A wonderful restaurant dinner with a equally excellent wine list and a beautifully cooked and served breakfast on our departure

Review 8:Booking oit was awful. They overcharged the dinner -I had signed the bill and suggested a 10%tip. They added £38 extra and also then added a further 10% on to the bill having already added the 10% to the dinner bill. When I pointed this out to the check out clerk she did not apologise or even seem to realise that what she haad done was illegal.

Review 9:The hotel is lovely, the staff friendly and helpful but not intrusive, and the food is excellent. I love the lounge/bar with its fires, eclectic mixture of furniture, and lovely ambience. We keep coming back to the "Spreadie" because we always enjoy it so much.

Review 10:Room was on the 2nd floor which would had been a problem with any guest with mobility issues. External noise,? from kitchen vent or similar prohibited sleep. Cooked breakfast was tepid served on cold plates. Despite this the hotel,it's charm and history didn't spoil my overnight stay. If I had the time I would had liked to have used the swimming pool and it's facilities.

Review 11:The kettle had to be plugged in and boiled on on the floor as the cable was too short! There was no socket for the hair dryer anywhere near a mirror! Wifi was virtually non existent!

Review 12:Lovely comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfasts.

Review 13:Staff very helpful in making sure the stay was very good, lovely room, lovely food, lovely old comfortable country house hotel with modern facilities wi9ll stay there again

Review 14:Only slight downside was difficulty in controlling temperature in my room, especially at night.

Review 15:Excellent food; light, bright and clean spa; masses of character of building and location; smiling staff; gorgeous white orchids lifted my spirits every day.

Review 16:Spa facilities lovely but quite small so better to avoid at peak times.

Review 17:Wonderful service from staff. I had told them in advance it was our anniversary and all staff we dealt with were aware and made us feel very special.

Review 18:My friend had to send her fried breakfast back as it was delivered cold and egg not properly cooked. The second breakfast was hot and properly cooked. She also found a piece of cling film in her smoked salmon which was part of another breakfast. It was removed but no offer of a replacement breakfast was given.

Review 19:I had to ask for the bathroom to be cleaned, it was very poor, the glass shower door was unsafe and the whole bathroom in a poor state of repair. I was advised they were redoing them over time but to charge £160 for a room with a below standard bathroom was extraordinary! No compensation was offered following our complaint and it was the receptionist who re-cleaned the bathroom, in itself odd.

Review 20:The location and general atmosphere was good

Review 21:See :-) as wrote it in the wrong one sorry.

Review 22:We have visited before and always have a nice time. We got married in Midhurst and stayed there six years ago. We have visited several times since. On this occasion we were kept awake by other visitors coming and going up till 2 in the morning with out any consideration for people trying to sleep.

Review 23:As above...The aqua aerobics spoiled our time at the pool and would be unlikely to return. Last time we came pool was ruined by screaming kids.

Review 24:Pool/steam etc BUT ruined by aqua aerobics...very loud music so had to leave poolside before we wanted to

Review 25:Everything! Great location Staff friendly and very client orientated Great parking facilities with CCTV Fab pool and spa with treatment Pet friendly (thank you :-) from Dolly and us) Very good breakfast selection Great pool and spa treatments

Review 26:Disappointed that there was not mattress protector. Kettle cord to short to safely reach the plug had to put it on the floor. Bathroom showing signs of wear.

Review 27:Staff very helpful and pleasant. Lovely old building and good location, a short stroll from the main shopping area.

Review 28:Size and comfort of bed, small and sloping! Wasn't deluxe double, couldn't close bedroom door as table in the way. For the price £300 + it was poor value for money. Breakfast items not replaced in buffet, although cooked breakfast was good. Bar drinks expensive (£12 for a glass of wine).

Review 29:Wi - fi was good, staff were OK. Parking was good and the location.

Review 30:Evening meal, was not value for money, 2nd night went out to restaurant in Midhurst. We noticed other people doing the same. Some of the service by the younger staff not up to scratch.

Review 31:Swimming pool, bedroom, breakfast.

Review 32:Restaurant is dire. Elaborate menu with the quality of very poor pub. At £75/head seriously overpriced. Service was disastrous- extremely slow and unprofessional. Breakfast same with burnt scrambled egg and sliced cheap bread for toast.

Review 33:Super location in a hotel steeped in history. Beautiful character building . Very professional receptionist on arrival.

Review 34:a fly in the unmanned self serve breakfast buffet area. Can't really be helped, but maybe a net over the fresh meats etc.

Review 35:Stayed for a wedding, lovely hotel, we am will return for a spa weekend.

Review 36:The staff were excellent, warm, friendly, welcoming and attentive. The food was freshly cooked, appetising and hot. We moved rooms for a more comfortable bed and that was no trouble.

Review 37:Not easy to find as Midhurst has narrow streets and one way system .

Review 38:Delightful hotel , excellent staff and very nicely furnished in a traditional fashion .Very comfortable room sorry we had a short visit .

Review 39:Although dinner we ordered was beautifully cooked and presented, menu was a little limited (only one dish that we liked for both main and dessert). although accept this could be a personal taste issue.

Review 40:Staff were friendly and attentive. Room clean and comfortable although a little small. Breakfast was superb.

Review 41:Hotel: Expensive - Mattress a disaster! bathroom can be cleaner too and the furniture very well used. No one seems ashamed of it! Restaurant: not up to its best for the price!

Review 42:Staff very attentive to customer care and the direct access to the SPA

Review 43:Only problem was that the changing rooms were being updated for the spa, so had to walk through hotel in dressing gound & flipflops, but they did provide it & all was explained & the staff full of apologies and very helpful

Review 44:Very old quirky building, with loads of character

Review 45:Private dining space at end of main restaurant and it does not work. People in private area were so noisy it spoilt ours and other diners evening

Review 46:Loved the room and food.

Review 47:The bed was too soft and dipped in the middle.

Review 48:Other than the bed the whole experience was excellent. Attentive and polite staff in a calming and pleasant atmosphere.

Review 49:Bar food prices on the cheeky side - £14 for a modest salad! Problems with wifi (which is free by the way - Booking.com wrong).

Review 50:Enjoyed the spa though the pool is somewhat small. Hospitable staff and good breakfasts - including kippers! The town of Midhurst is ancient and fascinating. Plenty of hotel parking space.

Review 51:The layout of the hotel, including a buffet breakfast in a separate room which staff frequently forget to point out to guests. Breakfast was cold two days running and came with a muddled order one day and undercooked poached eggs on the other.

Review 52:We were upgraded, always nice.

Review 53:I had a complimentary upgrade, but even so, I paid £149 for a double room. The air-conditioning unit turned itself on and off all night and I couldn't see how to switch it off. The breakfast was good but not special. In all, it was a nice stay but not worth £149. I now see on the website, a double has been discounted to £109. It would have been good if, the hotel having a moderate sized function, had offered guests staying after the function, the same discount.

Review 54:I only had one night after a function. The room was adequate but not large. The staff were very helpful and courteous.

Review 55:Breakfast. Was looking forward to a freshly cooked breakfast before walking on the South Downs Way - alas not to be, pre cooked and stored and tasted so.

Review 56:Staff were friendly, location good, hotel tidy and interesting.

Review 57:Spa facilities rather limited and hot.

Review 58:They upgraded our room and made a special effort for our 48th Wedding Anniversary. Lovely kind and helpful staff. Easy atmosphere and lovely building.

Review 59:A minor problem - the bathroom door hinges needed oiling, very noisy at night!

Review 60:Comfortable bedroom, good service, good food, lovely gardens, convenient location in the town

Review 61:The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and the whole hotel has a very cosy feel about it. The bar area has log fires and many a happy hour was spent there playing scrabble, talking to other guests and eating/drinking. Sometimes we chose not to go into the main restaurant but ate in the bar area. The hotel is extremely quiet and the spa although small was a lovely way to relax. The treatments I had were excellent.

Review 62:One of the treatment rooms has a tank filling next to it which is disruptive to the massage. Also there arent enough treatment rooms and staff

Review 63:The spa was mostly quiet

Review 64:Bed Sheets and blankets are not my preference

Review 65:On arriving I was informed that I had been given an upgraded room! Great location, staff, ambience, Spa, breakfast

Review 66:Don't sit to the left of the restaurant door, cold draft comesthrough door !

Review 67:Great location. The spa and therapist Vanessa was fantastic. Sorelaxing, best massage I have ever had. Food great, staff young but veryattentive.

Review 68:checked in for dinner by member of staff, moved to conservatory from lounge bar to crowded, I was not particularly hungry but no member of staff came to see me, I was not even offered a menu Saturday 17th

Review 69:the spa and the feel and comfort of the hotel, very relaxed

Review 70:Have been going back to this hotel for at least 12 years! The staff are lovely, 2 of them have been there for a very long time and the new team who are primarily French were equally good. The food is excellent. We love the Spa and there are places and towns such as Chichester closeby.

Review 71:Our room (Egromont)was opposite creaky stairs and near reception therefore disturbed sleep. Not enough staff to meet demand in the restaurant. Hotel guest should go down to breakfast early as choice and quality were compromised also the poor staff can not meet the demand. We arrived at 09:15 and we're disappointed.

Review 72:Spa and treatments Dinner was pleasant. Restaurant staff friendly even when they were under pressure. Quirky hotel.

Review 73:Only the weather! That was beyond the Hotel's control!

Review 74:Situation of hotel within the town. Food and comfort. Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Review 75:there could be a little more light in the bathroom I struggled to see when putting my make up on. hot tub had a little too much chlorine.

Review 76:Loads of history. The staff were excellent. Great breakfast. Plenty of parking, great public rooms, a comfortable bed, bath robes provided. I asked for an iron in the room before we went and it was there waiting for us.

Review 77:We had a ground floor room so didn't like to leave the window open, the room was very warm so we turned the radiator off. Not enough electrical sockets in the room, had to keep moving things around (kettle, fan & mobile phone). The only spare sockets were behind one of the bedside tables. The shower was nice but only had frosted panes of glass in the window, so being on the ground floor you could clearly see people walking past! Breakfast was nothing special, it is obviously cooked and kept in a warming tray, bacon was very chewy & cold, the rest of it was only luke warm.We were told that the breakfast buffet was in another room, but we're not told where the room was, so we had to go on a hunt. My husband asked for some toast and it never arrived!!

Review 78:Reception staff were polite, friendly and helpful.

Review 79:I stayed as a last minute stopover, at a reduced price, but some of the other bigger rooms can get quite expensive.

Review 80:This is a very historic and attractive Hotel, with modern amenities, spotless bathrooms, and particularly helpful staff, and a full Spa. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 81:The whole atmosphere of the hotel is relaxed and friendly. It is a good location, walking distance from the town centre, not far from the sea, not far from London an ideal place to stay.It is my second stay and I really enjoyed it.

Review 82:Melon and pineapple at breakfast were "bounce ioff the plate" unripe. Calves liver (for both of us) looked as if it had been put under the grill and forgotten about on Tuesday - burnt on top and overdone. Hake was lovely on Monday and other meals very good. Someone needs to teach the bar staff how to make quite simple cocktails! The non-alcoholic ones too.!

Review 83:Lovely staff, great spa (pool & Jacuzzi). Oldy-worldy ambience, a bit shabby in places but a lovely hotel.

Review 84:The bedrooms were too hot, even with the fan on, what with no windows opening, due to our room facing onto the road.

Review 85:The food was excellent, the service was brilliant, the whole ambience was extremly good. One of our party who used the pool was impressed by how clean & fresh it was. Overall it was a pleasure & we shall be returning in the not too distant future.

Review 86:It was quite noisy during the night with some guests drinking in the courtyard into the early hours and having very noisy conversation.

Review 87:Facilities. Service in the Restaurant was excellent with a good choice of food. Breakfast was very good.

Review 88:Our tea making facilities were located in a cupboard while the power sockets were elsewhere which was awkward. Also a bar menu would be a useful addition to your catering.

Review 89:The staff and atmosphere of the hotel is very good.we had a very enjoyable stay.

Review 90:One of the bedrooms was on the ground floor and other guests had to pass it to access the other rooms in the hotel. Unfortunately hotel guests are oblivious to the fact that at 1.30am in the morning other guests are sleeping and I think that it would be a very good idea if the hotel respectfully request that guests walking past the ground floor rooms in the early hours of the morning do not talk at the top of their voices and wake those guests in the bedrooms!

Review 91:The hotel is in a delightful part of West Sussex and it was a treat to stay in a building with such history. The hotel is relaxed and the staff are friendly and accommodating .One of our three rooms was not the same standard as the other two and we requested a room change which was met without any problems. We made use of the swimming pool , steam room, jacuzzi etc during our stay. The breakfast was delicious and we would definitely return should the opportunity present itself.

Review 92:The absence of glass, chrome, bored staff, dried-out buffet's, boring bedrooms and formula service. Oh, and being told to "enjoy your stay" with all the sincerity of a politician completing an expense claim.

Review 93:If: You don't want glass and chrome and instead prefer old, gnarled, creaky wood then this is your place. If you don't mind banging your head on the exposed beams in the bedroom rather than have swish, modern, ever so rectangular rooms, then this will suit. If you would rather forego the tepid, over-cooked, charmless buffet brekkie and instead spend a few minutes lingering over a cold selection before waiting a few minutes more for a freshly cooked hot breakfast then look no more. If you don't mind facilities that creak a bit, lack of a lift to the first floor, narrow creaky corridors and oodles and oodles of olde worlde charm then this will do nicely. If you want attentive staff, charming location, beautiful old buildings, a touch of the "not quite perfect" then this is perfect. The spread eagle is not for those unavoidable, drab, boring business stop overs. It is a lovely event in a lovely hotel with lovely staff.

Review 94:Some bits of the hotel are getting a bit "shabby chic" not a problem as yet but may need some investment in rooms (eg aircon) Pricing is at top end but remains value for money

Review 95:Nothing had changed Staff were great (Jonah & Faith in particular) Food Ambience Spa

Review 96:Some carpets in the public areas are beginning to wear, go threadbare, not a good image and possible H&S issue.

Review 97:Atmosphere Comfortable rooms Excellent bathroom \ shower Dog friendly Relaxing lounge bar (Seafarer real ale is a must try) Plenty of on site parking In center of village Good breakfast selection

Review 98:The hotel is in a good position but could be so much better with some effort, the staff dont really know what they are doing, they are polite and friendly but their service is poor there seems to be no managment guideance. The foid in the resturant is poor, out dated and over priced for what you get. The toom was ok, the spa is ok. The public areas need a spruce up new carpets and kept cleaner. As I say our stay was OK but no more.

Review 99:The food was overpriced as was the room. For £109 i was put in the smallest double I have ever seen. It was hot and claustrophobic. It had a TV smaller than my Laptop. I complained and to be fair I was moved to a larger room. No shower, had to leave the windows open as no aircon or fan therfore very noisy as main road just outside. No mobile signal and poor wifi signal and room phones did not work properly for outside line so I was cut off from business and family. Over all a disaster and an expensive one. Its on the never again list.

Review 100:The food was good

Review 101:Our room was disappointing and the bed was small by modern hotel standards. The breakfast was very disappointing.

Review 102:The seating area at the entrance was light and comfortable and we liked the old bar area which had character. Our dinner was good with the dishes being well cooked and presented

Review 103:no bad experiences, other than the high cost of meals every thing was excellent.

Review 104:Staff were all lovely, polite and clearly happy in their work.

Review 105:Service was slow

Review 106:Nice and comfortable

Review 107:No fridge in bedroom

Review 108:Breakfasts, bar lounge, friendly staff

Review 109:Food not good enough Over cooked fish Pheasant tough Shane

Review 110:Lovely ambiencw
