Reviews for Hotel du Vin Bristol

Review 1:In the room, it was VERY difficult to control the heating. The thermostat on the wall seemed to have a mind of its own, and the radiator by the bed belted out heat in the night even when the therm. was set to the lowest (16 degrees C). Also, no light switch nr. bed to control lights, and all the room lights had to be either on or off. Not nice in evenings for reading or telly. Also, it wasn't made obvious in the booking that breakfast was a costly one-price-only extra; this should be flagged up, especially for those who are eating little and quickly. Finally and most importantly, the staff made the visit a semi uncomfortable one. There was a lovely Australian waiter at dinner and a very helpful young woman waitress at breakfast, but they seemed exceptions. As a whole, the staff were cool/unsmiling and more perfunctory/indifferent than in any other hotel in memory. As a solo traveller, I felt fairly overlooked in terms of service in the Bar-dining area; very slow and after long waits, I often had to work to get the attention of staff, even after the rush period. At front desk, staff couldn't really direct me (and hardly wanted to help) to an address a mile away; it seemed a nuisance for them to ring a taxi. When checking-out, I was misinformed about my bill and then, after I queried, it was corrected with a shrug. Check-out seemed highly unprofessional and unfriendly. There was generally a sense - beneath the minimum politeness - that they truly didn't care and were bordering on resentment of guests. Maybe their conditions are poor; something is. So they created an uneasy atmosphere as a group. Having thought I'd found a good hotel for repeat visits to Bristol for business, I'd changed my mind by the end of my 3-day visit.

Review 2:The decor of the room and bath was lovely. The hotel location was convenient enough.

Review 3:The evening meal was not good. Refund agreed. Surly staff who did not assist with bags and for whom we had to wait for their private conversations to end before being dealt with

Review 4:The room was spacious and functional

Review 5:Food can be variable, fish under cooked at breakfast, the Cassoulet is awful, I am amazed the French Embassy has not be round to complain!

Review 6:Staff attentive, nice bar with some great wines. Great private dining room.

Review 7:Location is excellent for shows at O2, Colston Hall etc. or for shopping at Cabot Circus. The rooms are gorgeous and value for money. Staff both at reception and bar & restaurant are friendly and helpful.

Review 8:Room wasn't that sound proof so we had the unpleasant misfortune of hearing the couple next door.

Review 9:Boutique Style hotel with lots of Character and Charm. Warm and Cozy, great walking distance to town.

Review 10:The reception staff were very welcoming, especially Nicola - helpful with local information and directions. The room was exceptional - large, clean and very comfortable. Food fab!

Review 11:Standard double room.....very compact...when wardrobe doors open unable to walk round bed on one side and eaves impacted on the other side. Even with doors closed the gap only allowed one person at a time to walk round.

Review 12:Lovely bathroom with walk in drench shower

Review 13:Ale expensive in comparison to a glass of house wine, but very much appreciated alternative for a non-wine drinker

Review 14:Fantastic hotel, comfortable spacious room, fantastic shower, friendly professional staff

Review 15:They pestered me for payment up front. The got my bill very wrong and charged me for items that were not mine. These have been refunded. A lack of gluten free basics such as crackers which meant the cheese board was not available to me. French Fries aren't gluten free either, All they need is a separate fryer. They were very slow and forgot to bring my drink in the restaurant on one occasion.

Review 16:The Hotel has a very nice ambience good location, friendly staff, excellent drinks menu and the standard double room was very good.

Review 17:No parking so had to park in multi-storey nearby with 25% discount but still over £15 a night, this should have been made much clearer on booking! When we we're surprised by this, the staff seemed unapologetic and blamed us for not reading the booking information better. Had room service as we're in a hurry but we have eaten in the restaurant before and were previously impressed- the food was average at best and very expensive for what it was (over £15 for burger and fries, which were so salty they were inedible)- expected much better from such a good restaurant. Also minibar drinks were very pricey!

Review 18:Beautiful hotel with lovely rooms. Fantastic en suite bathroom, with lots of extras such as Nespresso machine in rooms and fresh milk for morning coffee. Good location in centre of town.

Review 19:Receptionist on arrival 6.45 was not helpful re parking, said we could wait for an outside space !!! they are metered & max stay in day was 2 Hours. Eventually she told us to park in Car park opposite had to ask if she had a map Bristol's one way system is not easy. She had a really bad attitude.

Review 20:Fabulous food & Service

Review 21:Eating in the restaurant was not a good experience. Food was very average and standard of service id not match what you would expect from a hotel of this standard.

Review 22:Only paid parking is available (but it is very central) and each room only has one key (two would have been more useful)

Review 23:The ambience is truly wonderful, almost on a par with a little boutique hotel and the Bistro is amazing.

Review 24:As we had got married that day they upgraded us to an amazing room. It was a total surprise and really made our day. The whole place is so cool and has a great vibe. Very Bristol.

Review 25:Appalling room acoustic insulation (from street, from nearby rooms, from water and toilet noises). Sub-standard and impractical bathroom facilities. Lack of natural light throughout, lousy artificial lighting (dining room particularly), decrepit building (no refurbishment or face lift for too many years!)

Review 26:Comfortable bed, general cleanliness, quality of food and beverages

Review 27:previous reviews had stated that the rooms overlooking the courtyard are very noisy so we chose a room at the side. Unfortunately this overlooks an alleyway used by people leaving clubs until 3 am so we were constantly disturbed by the noise of people laughing and shouting in the alleyway. Also there is virtually no parking so we had to use the NCP opposite which is across a very busy road with no footpath and which cost £21 for one night's parking!

Review 28:The quality of the beds and bathroom fittings is great. The rooms are quirky and very comfortable.

Review 29:I am afraid I am a very light sleeper and this hotel is on a main thorough fare and beside a building that has very loud air conditioning units very close to the hotel. The noise therefore upset my sleep. Chose a room away from the road

Review 30:The building is beautiful and tastefully decorated. The rooms are individual and inventive. I loved the welcome the ease of the staff and the general attentiveness that was paid to me. I would highly recommend this little gem as a beautiful romantic or individual retreat. Loved it.

Review 31:The service in the restaurant, especially over breakfast. In short friendly but inept.

Review 32:The room and bathroom which were spacious and well appointed if not brightly lit.

Review 33:Nothing to not like.

Review 34:It was our 32nd wedding anniversary and the staff went out of their way to make it extra special for us. Nicola on reception was so helpful and lovely.

Review 35:Our bed was a little squeeky.

Review 36:The style and decoration of the hotel is lovely. Helpful staff and great breakfast. Perfect central location but still feels like a quiet boutique hotel. Great champagne in the bar too! The bathroom was also out of this world!

Review 37:Bed to hard for us, we both didn't sleep to well, but we are used to a memory foam Mattress

Review 38:Loved the Decor, ambiance & character Bathroom Lush and spacious Great food and service

Review 39:No parking. Toilet flush didn't work very well. Noise from meeting room opposite our room.

Review 40:Great location. Amazing room...had a free upgrade to a studio. The room was huge. Lovely decor. Good selection of snacks in the mini bar.

Review 41:This is not really a bad experience but I was flabbergasted by the difference in price between a Friday night stay and a Saturday night stay.

Review 42:The evening meal at the bistro was excellent, but don't have the spinach (far too salty). The staff were most concerned over our comfort and made sure we had a room that fully met our requirements.

Review 43:The staff at reception were a little cold, could have been more welcoming and less snooty. I was travelling alone and it made me feel intimidated.

Review 44:I was so impressed with my room, incredible value for money and great facilities and amenities.

Review 45:Room allocated was far too small. It was impossible to move around the bed due to sloping ceiling at one side and dressing table at the other. Also it was difficult for two people to move around the room comfortably. This room should be sold as double room for single occupancy. I did raise the issue with the manager who dealt with the situation in a professional manner. The hotel was full so couldn't move rooms. I was given a discount on the cost of the stay. I have used this chain of hotels on many occasions and have never stayed in such a poor room.

Review 46:Location great. Staff were excellent.

Review 47:This is the 3rd time we have had Sunday lunch but this time we were very disappointed. Our veg & potatoes came in one small dish between 4 people. It was like a dish of bubble & squick...We have always had potatoes put on our plates separately... I ended up having no potato..a small thing I know .. So our main lunch was a disappointment ....

Review 48:Service was excellent & all staff were very helpful & polite.....hotel is spotless .

Review 49:Lovely reception staff. Made out dog so welcome. Bed and bowl provided. Stylish bedroom and en suite. Great location. No parking but plenty available in multi-storey nearby. Mighty recommended

Review 50:We were in Sancerre room (each room has a different name, after a specific wine) - that's not one of the most expensive - and it was anyway wonderful - big, clean, silent, really nice, and with a huge bathroom: we really loved it. The hotel itself is spectacular - with wonderful public areas - and it's in a very central location.

Review 51:a little disappointed I could not get a table in the hotel restaurant and had to sit in bar for dinner - need to book a table in advance next time.

Review 52:staff very friendly - room spacious, comfortable and quiet.

Review 53:Being very picky but we couldn't get the lights so just one reading light would come on. The bed was really comfortable but there was a wooden surround as part or the base which was slightly awkward.

Review 54:It was very atmospheric with a super ambiance. The walk through shower was fantastic and a larger than normal sized room.

Review 55:Sink with 2 tabs - difficult to mix water. Staff not organized with booking in information (but very friendly).

Review 56:Optics of Hotel, Atmosphere, bathroom old-fashion look but modernized, very pet friendly, good food!

Review 57:it's noisy at night as people were out drinking and were very loud. And one guest was aggressive towards me and I felt unsafe. It's a rough sort of area.

Review 58:Love the hotel.. the maids were excellent..

Review 59:Far, far far too hot (not a hot day) Air conditioning ineffective The only lift broken staff not that fussed Off-hand check out staff Over-priced mini bar

Review 60:Great Breakfast Stylish loft style rooms Good decor Friendly check in staff Great cocktails

Review 61:More advice than didn't like! Maybe the hotel should consider movement sensor lighting in the corridor areas. This would save on energy and cool the place down. The corridors were incredibly stuffy and hot because the lights are on permanently Also cards to switch on/off the room lighting would be more envirnmental friendly instead of the bulky keys

Review 62:Friendly, helpful staff. Beautifully furnished room Attention to detail

Review 63:Nothing :)

Review 64:Really beautiful, original-feeling hotel. Very comfortable, luxurious room, especially the bed. I really enjoyed a soak in the giant roll-top bath.

Review 65:Too hot even with window open all night, which meant we were woken by the street noise at 06.30. No help carrying our bags up or down the stairs, even though staff could see we were struggling. Overall beautiful hotel but overpriced.

Review 66:Hotel looks lovely, very well put together. Beds were very comfortable and shower great.

Review 67:It is a bit of a maze when it comes to finding your way around the place; but this would be less of an issue for longer stays. The snack items for sale in the room were a bit pricey.

Review 68:The bathroom was fabulous, roomy and clean. Loved the roll top bath. Good facilities in the spacious room (Sancerre) -calling it standard is an understatement. Good standard of cleanliness throughout. The staff were welcoming and friendly, very helpful.

Review 69:Shower head was particularly low so couldn't get under but understand this was due to the low ceilings of this old building, tiling looked a little tired and probably due for a refresh

Review 70:Studio room was very spacious and well appointed

Review 71:Wifi was a bit of a faff to get working and mobile phone signal isn't great - no real problems.

Review 72:The room was comfortable and stylish. The bathroom was especially nice.

Review 73:I'd requested parking - but no one had replied to tell me that they didn't reserve - until I was checking in. However a good solution was found. The bed was not really very comfortable, although an improvement over when I last stayed. . I think my biggest gripe - and I am being critical - is that the staff in the bar were all pretty sullen - I don't think one of them raised a smile all evening.. too cool for school perhaps - but grating..

Review 74:I've always liked this hotel - and stayed quite a lot after it was first opened. The location is great for central Bristol and I love the decor and feel of the place. My room was an ordinary double so not massive compared to some of the suites - but perfectly.

Review 75:My room was next to the alley and unfortunately on my second night there were some intoxicated individuals talking very loudly which made it difficult to sleep.

Review 76:The hotel is very centrally located close to Cabot Circus and Broadmede shopping districts, museums and cinemas. The room was very comfortable and staff were friendly and helpful. Restaurant had great food and service.

Review 77:The parking situation was awful and I ended up with a parking ticket due to the hotel Reception staff not pointing out which spaces belonged to hotel and which were Council. I am in the process of therefore putting a complaint in to the Hotel Manager.

Review 78:The room, and food were great.

Review 79:Some fixture and fittings were a little low on quality.

Review 80:There is an individual snug room for romantic dining which was absolutely unique and made the stu that much more memorable! Roll top bath and monsoon shower was great too!

Review 81:Toast at breakfast not 100% - stuff in the basket was soggy and the soldiers with boiled eggs were burnt. Otherwise excellent. Bathroom lighting very subdued and not good for make up!

Review 82:Great atmosphere, liked the restaurant and had a fantastic evening meal, roast cod on puy lentils, and chicken salad with an unusual bottle of Italian white wine from Puglia!

Review 83:The style of the room. Hotel du Vin used to have lovely traditional rooms but they now seem to be somewhat corporate and does not fit the identity of the hotel.

Review 84:The bathroom was lovely

Review 85:Unhelpful staff. I rang up a week prior to confirm that I'd upgraded to a suite and asked to book a parking space at the hotel as my partner was recovering from a heart attack a month prior. They were extremely unhelpful. Also I was informed by the frosty faced reception staff upon arrival that my upgrade hadn't been processed. Breakfast was also badly organised and a shambles. Too expensive for the experience!!!!

Review 86:Can't think of many positives-the bathroom was nice....apart from the glass doors so sitting on the toilet could be viewed :-/

Review 87:Lucky we hadn't taken a cat as the room was so small we wouldn't have been able to swing it. Have bruised shins from banging them on bed etc. as all furniture so cramped. Not sure about the clear glass in the bathroom door - which was right next to the loo! We had to wait 45 minutes for our breakfast to be served - there was a sort of apology but only after we had asked and the restaurant wasn't even anywhere near full. When it arrived it was very disappointing for the price . Actually it was disappointing full stop. The place was soulless, expensive and rather ordinary.

Review 88:Location not bad but very little parking.

Review 89:Unfortunately they were doing major works in the road and if one had the window open, it was very noisy all night. But it was a once off removing a footbridge. we were unlucky. otherwise it was GREAT.

Review 90:Staff were very helpul

Review 91:We were told the room was quiet however we were overlooking the courtyard and even though it closed at 11 I believe, we were woken by loud chatting and laughter gone midnight then at 4amish the roadworks which were due to start to demolish a bridge nearby started with very loud drilling - obviously not fault of hotel.

Review 92:The room was excellent, very clean, comfy bed - bathroom was fab, water hot, excellent bath and shower. This was a standard double which is so much more than standard - would recommend.

Review 93:Adjacent room had left a tray out at around 19.30 was a little pungent and was still on the floor but someone had moved it to near the lift as we were leaving in the morning . Reception did apologise for oversight .

Review 94:Great room with fantastic bathroom ,intimate and luxurious . Perfect setting for a romantic break

Review 95:No obvious free bottled water and the door to the bathroom was partly made of clear glass...so no privacy when privacy would have been nice.

Review 96:booking.com enabled me to remember to ask for two single duvets so we both had a great nights sleep

Review 97:Soundproofing as we heard noise from corridors domain door could be thicker? A bit dark in the superior room lighting could improved

Review 98:Location Atmosphere Standard Service

Review 99:friendly reception, great bar area. Bistro was really nice. Hamish was our waiter and he was really friendly, polite, changed my order as I'm fussy and wanted different stuff with my fish. clean comfy room

Review 100:the only downside is there is a beam in the deluxe room that you could easily walk into in the middle of the night

Review 101:staff were fantastic, baths were beautiful and amazing monsoon showers, bistro food and staff also great!

Review 102:Bar area opens to courtyard and a draught blew through every time someone walked in. Bar neither cosy or comfortable. Service OK, but not achieving the standards it should when spending £500 on a night away. Car parking in a large multi-storey.

Review 103:Great food, great room. Good location

Review 104:Car parking? Maybe it might be time to forget the few spaces at the front and direct people straight to Rupert Street?

Review 105:Great bath; hotel character; and of course the food and wine

Review 106:We loved everything. Can't wait for our next stay.

Review 107:The splendid Valentina looked after us and her staff with a great deal of thought and energy and made everyone feel welcome. The rooms are superb and so well designed with an amazingly comfortable bed. The food was Hotel du Vin at it's very best. We had a big celebration lunch on Sunday again with delicious food and attentive staff.

Review 108:Excessive noise from outside throughout night - slept poorly Very small room - we had booked a twin but shown to a double so beds were pulled apart but very little room between wall and bed and eaves very low - had to duck eaves and curtain rail

Review 109:Nice bathroom

Review 110:Parking was a bother, maybe if there was some designated parking spaces in front of the hotel, although we were given a good discount for the NCP across a busy road, but again this would not stop us from returning, the good far outweighs the one niggle about parking.

Review 111:All of it very pleasant staff, clean and extremely comfortable rooms, best shower ever, all in all a wonderful hotel

Review 112:Loved everything, the only small downside is the the rooms are fairly dark, and a bit noisy in the mornings due to building work in the area.

Review 113:beautiful quirky hotel, comfy room and superb shower, staff very polite in an understated way.

Review 114:Its a historic building and when they converted it they didn't soundproof it adequately. We couldn't sleep because the noise was so loud.

Review 115:Restaurant and bar is attractive and food is good quality

Review 116:Rooms too dark. poor lighting. How are people supposed to fix makeup or men to shave. bed a foot from the wall so unable to turn off the lights from the bedside without getting out of bed! socket switches small hard to locate in the gloom. Key difficult. Hair dryer hidden. Curtain rail needs silicone to make it slide andclose fully. Disabled loo in foyer needs an appropriate lock. Sunday morning all my families eggs were hard.

Review 117:The staff and the ambiance

Review 118:Neighbours were talking loudly in the room next to us in the early hours which kept us up. Not the hotels fault in any way. I wish the bottled water in the rooms were still free.

Review 119:The staff were very friendly, the, the rooms were fantastic and the shower and bathroom is quite simply better than any other hotels in the country.... Maybe even the world!

Review 120:The bedroom was too small in comparison to the bathroom. A metre could have been taken from the bathroom and still be a very good size. Because it was so large the bed was pushed up next to a sloping roof so you could not stand up on one side of the bed without hitting your head. The bed was hard. The bar was scheduled to be closed while we were there, but we were not told until the day before. The food an drinks were expensive. Car parking, although close, in the traffic on tyhe Saturday we arrived it took 25 minutes to park and walk back.

Review 121:The bath water wasn't very hot despite cautionary tag on the tap. The food/service weren't particularly great at dinner but this didn't distract from the occasion. Breakfast food and service very good. Not ideal parking facilities-not very clear on website.

Review 122:The private function room and bar were ideal for our reunion. The staff were all very pleasant. Good location for visiting Bristol.

Review 123:Poor lighting in room made reading v difficult and bad bed design with awkward wooden frames. Noise from music until 11 on Friday and 12 on Sat. Got trapped in car park by illegally parked car.

Review 124:V well located for access to concert halls etc, but tucked away so no traffic noise. Helpful and friendly staff, excellent breakfasts, decent pre-theatre meal. Dog friendly. Fabulous bathroom. Free parking outside if you can get one of the 6-8 spaces as we did! Good minibar and room service.

Review 125:Some of the signage was misleading so some wandering occurred when we were trying to find things

Review 126:The facilities of the room were excellent and we had every comfort we could need in the room including a well stocked bar.

Review 127:Over priced and very very hot in restaurant. Also I was told two out of the eight parking spaces were reserved for an expected disabled guest. Turned out to be both for Nick Knowles and his range rover !!! We had to park a very long way from hotel.

Review 128:Comfortable and friendly.

Review 129:Lighting everywhere dim Wooden edges to beds - not so good for weoldies getting up and down and our pet hate ( everywhere these days)duvets !!!!!

Review 130:Staff - all so attentive! Lunch and wonderful breakfast - even theEnglish mustard was on the table! Top marks for that!!!!

Review 131:Parking is a major issue as limited outside hotel and costly yo park in national car park even with hotel discount voucher.

Review 132:Historical building Excellent restaurant with attentive and knowledgable staff Ambience Vibe, which was a mixture of young and mature people Relaxed atmosphere

Review 133:The bedroom was extremely small with one tiny window. It was also very noisy when next door ran their shower. Not quite as up market or luxurious as I expected,

Review 134:The location and the amazing bathroom |

Review 135:windows need insulated more from road noise. I stay in London once a month through work at the Hilton and there is never any noise. Unfortunately I won't return to Bristol because of this. It was beyond your control the noise outside such as police and ambulances going by but in London we never hear the noise through the windows.

Review 136:The "Hotel Du Vin" as I have stayed at the Brighton and Poole one also. This was my first time at Bristol and we thought we'd treat ourselves as it was our wedding anniversary. Staff excellent especially the lady on reception and the young tall man in the restaurant.

Review 137:Room was a bit warm but a blast with the AC sorted that out

Review 138:Quality Hotel Excellent bar and restaurant areas Nicely furnished room Espresso machine and fresh milk in the fridge for tea / coffee

Review 139:Slow getting served for breakfast. They say wait to be seated, but there were no staff and I had to shout into the kitchen for coffee and toast. Very unusual, but not good. I don't really like the new uniform either, and it seems the staff don't either.

Review 140:Very comfortable bed. Great shower which really wake you up. Very friendly and helpful service. interesting and very extensive range of drinks. As an illustration, I had a French 75, and asked about the origin of the name - the bartender didn't know, got out a book and looked it up. So if you go, you can find out ...

Review 141:Need table for a bit of studying like reading newspaper and doing some writing. The room does not come with at least a complimentary table water...we also found out that the toiletries were not replaced daily

Review 142:We like the hotel for its uniqueness; and more particularly it rich historical appellations. The rooms are very nice and the bathroom with its rich and up scales facilities are just the right for lovers relations.
