Reviews for Mackenzies Highland Inn

Review 1:The ensuite bathroom. Good to have one, but it is in desperate need of a revamp, and it is apparent that the odd thing has been done (such as new glass panes for water exclusion in the shower) but the underlying deterioration is obvious. Black mould around most tiles and fittings, a faulty toilet cistern lid, faulty shower doors which almost locked me in when the door jammed, and warm basin water if you wait for 2 or 3 minutes. The other weakness was the lighting in the bedroom, which was too gloomy to read properly.

Review 2:The staff were really warm and friendly, and the breakfasts were very good. The pub was also very well stocked though I only used the pub facilities once. The room was nice and warm all the time.

Review 3:We had a young child with us and had booked a quadruple room. When arrived it was 2 bunk beds in a freezing room. We were moved, thank goodness but it didn't get any warmer!!! Also no food served at night

Review 4:Location

Review 5:Shower preassure inexistant and water boiling or freezing (no in between). Old fashioned.

Review 6:The pub area and pool game on site. Room was clean and staff helpful.

Review 7:The state of decor was appalling. To be expected to pay what we did for the room was insulting. My daughter was very upset and this was my Christmas gift to her and her boyfriend. The first impression was that the hotelier did not care and we were very concerned about the hygiene standards, however the facilities did appear to be clean on greater familiarity. Our money was taken from us on our arrival. I do wonder if people would stay if this was not the case. We arrived late after a lengthy journey and were tired and hungry. The mattresses were very poor quality with springs protruding. The bedding was very worn. Not an aesthetically pleasing experience, but we had a peaceful nights sleep and the location was very convenient

Review 8:Gentleman who served breakfast was very pleasant. Breakfast was good.

Review 9:hotel was dirty had to by a duster to clean cob webs from above childrens beds, arived at christmas time but there was no tree or anything to do with christmas. would probley not stay here again

Review 10:location was good breakfast was ok

Review 11:The matresses were very thin and uncomfortable and didn't fit the beds properly.

Review 12:The children loved the fact we had 2 sets of bunkbeds. The location was ideal and the breakfast was great and a large selection to choose from.

Review 13:The hotel closes until 4pm so couldn't get in when we arrived bar area has just been refurbished which is lovely but no heating in it yet so was really cold and the breakfast was burnt only nice thing was the scrambled egg the rooms need updated as they're very dark because of the colours also there should be a notice to inform you that children aren't allowed in the bar area after 9pm so facilities to entertain them and would benefit from having a chef for meals as we had to eat out but would recommend papa rocks .

Review 14:The location wasn't to far away from the train station and room 1 had a good view .

Review 15:This accommodation is the most disgusting accommodation I have ever seen. Dirt under the beds, dirty coffee cups, rubbish already in the bin, dust, mould and a gaffa taped shower!

Review 16:absolutely nothing!!

Review 17:I sent an email telling the owner when I'd be arriving and arrived at the time I said. I walked in under a ladder with someone on top of it sawing and hammering. The place was a building site. There was no one there (except builders). He didn't call until 5 hours later. I didn't have anywhere to put my luggage for all those hours. When we finally got the phone call to come and be let in we got shown to a twin room rather than the double room we booked. We asked if there were any double rooms available and there thankfully was.. However it's just two single beds pushed together! The 'dining' room smelled so strongly of varnish that we couldn't go for breakfast. The bathroom was freezing cold with a small obsolete fan heater. Not to mention the 'decor', anyone could do a better a paint job. I'm hoping they change that when the refurb is done.

Review 18:The location is good. Just five mins walk from the station.

Review 19:Very dirty carpets, hallway, toilets. Broken door lock. Broken wardrobe door. Broken smoke alarm in room. No one stayed in hotel overnight if any queries. Chef did not show up for breakfast until an hour and 10 mins after food should have had breakfast. Musty smell throughout.

Review 20:Room outdated, damp , mould ridden bathroom , broken shower screen, temperature of shower going from scalding hot to freezing cold without touching dial , filthy carpet , badly painted and a piece of broken mirror still stuck to the door when the rest of it was missing . This is room one.

Review 21:Glad it was only one night

Review 22:Room was partially decorated, no tea no coffee cake crumbs on carpet, mattresses lumpy and dirty and cups, saucer and kettle all dusty and dirty.

Review 23:Staff were lovely

Review 24:Room was a bit disappointing and could use some refurbishment. Fine for a couple of nights I don't think I would like to spend much longer there.

Review 25:The location is great, good parking and friendly helpful staff.

Review 26:Nothing major to complain about. The room was comfortable and relatively clean, however, know some people would struggle with things such as the hole in the bathroom wall and the slightly damp smelling shower curtain.

Review 27:attentive, friendly and efficient staff. Food was plentiful and of really good quality, especially breakfast which was fantastic.

Review 28:Room smelt of damp, lot of black mould round shower.toilet inlet pipe leaked, beds really creaked and lumpy.top of kettle full of dust, worst room we have stayed in

Review 29:Breakfast really good,good service

Review 30:The paintwork in the hotel was terrible, bits missed, patchy, no straight edges, needs much more attention to detail, in our room the toilet lid was broken off, lights in room very dim. Needs a complete makeover.

Review 31:Breakfast was good, well stocked bar, big bedroom with comfortable bed. Friendly staff, young girl serving breakfast was very nice and pleasant.

Review 32:The on suite was tiny but functional. The room was a little tired and dated.

Review 33:The Inn is within easy walking from the train station and the shops in Aviemore. Our room was spacious, had good views and was warm and cosy.

Review 34:The decor in the room looked like a three year old had been let loose with a paint brush. Holes in the wall where a shelf had been. one of the twin beds felt and sounded like the mattress was stuffed with spanners.

Review 35:The staff let us into our room to get ready for the wedding despite our early arrival. The breakfast was adequate and served very quickly.

Review 36:Everything. Very dirty carpet wasn't hover . Carpet needs to be pulled up . Very much inneed of a make over. Paid before we saw are rooms. After 10 mins had to fine somewhere elsa. Only half my money refunded . Not good.

Review 37:Nothing

Review 38:Hotel was very tired and 'grubby' much in need of a good make over or decorating. Our front facing room was very noisy and the walls paper thin.

Review 39:The staff were helpful and cheerful

Review 40:The price is too high for what's offered. We had traveled around Scotland, stayed in many B&Bs, hotels, etc., and this was more expensive than many others, yet the room and bathroom felt like a cheap old hostel.

Review 41:The location in Aviemore is nice and convenient. Being connected to a restaurant/pub was also nice for dinner and drinks. Good breakfast.

Review 42:We had to wait til late afternoon to get into our rooms as they had builders/workman staying before and the carpets needed cleaning. There was only one person cleaning the rooms which normally would've been ok but not on this occasion. The decor of the rooms are needing to be updated and better painted as it was very untidy and very slapdash.

Review 43:Staff were very friendly and helpfull. Good location food was very good.

Review 44:Rooms were not decorated well and the bathroom was shabby The breakfast wasn't great

Review 45:Good location and on top of a pub The staff were friendly and helpful

Review 46:This hotel needs to be reassessed on its Star Rating!! The state of the rooms leave much to be desired. Appears to be aimed at the young Backpacker market.

Review 47:Convenient for the Railway Station and Town.

Review 48:The room was fairly small as it was bunk bed accommodation. The food selection bothe for dinner and breakfast very limited.

Review 49:The location was good and the beds were comfortable.

Review 50:Had a bit of an issue with the shower, but this was reported and I'm sure it will have been rectified.

Review 51:Friendly staff, fantastic food, lovely beer, massive bed.

Review 52:Everything. The whole place smelled of fish! The room was dark, dated and dirty. Very badly decorated and shower was mouldy. Rubbish still in the drawers..generally unpleasant

Review 53:I liked checking out!

Review 54:Nothing we didn't like

Review 55:Twin room was compact but had everything we needed. Staff were friendly, breakfast was good. Live music in the bar was a great treat.

Review 56:From booking to end of stay, the staff were excellent.Booking in was easy, rooms were clean and comfortable. Food and entertainment were great. Thanks from us all.

Review 57:Everything. Mold on ceilings, squeaky beds, giant spider, broken door and handles, nasty bathroom, manager was rude.

Review 58:Nothing. We left 10 minutes after checking in due to the nasty conditions. Manager refused to give us a refund or to even apologize.

Review 59:hotel needs a lot of work. painting and decorating would make a great difference. the bedroom furniture was old and broken. the squeaky door really is annoying at one o'clock in the morning. there was a pile of rubbish left behind the reception desk. it just looks like everyone has lost interest in this place.

Review 60:the location was very good. the hotel was five minutes walk from town. the staff were friendly and the breakfast was filling.

Review 61:Where do I start!..The bed you could feel every bed spring hence 2 nights of uncomfortable sleep, the shower cubicle was disgusting with mold in the shower cubicle and the shower curtain was also disgusting. The breakfast was uneatable, we did not eat on the 2nd day and bought from another hotel.

Review 62:The only good thing about this hotel was the location and the staff were friendly.

Review 63:The bathroom was small and very dated. I could feel the bed springs.

Review 64:The location was perfect as we were skiing on the Cairgorm mountain every day. The staff were quite helpful. Decent size room. Shower was always hot.

Review 65:Dirty carpet in bedroom, mouldy shower.Sold as family room, was a tiny room with 2 bunk beds crammed in, smelt of smoke and other unsaviory ssmells. We checked out after 10 minutes After complaining, they charged us for the 2 nights booked.

Review 66:In need of some redecoration and renovation, particularly the bathroom

Review 67:The accommodation was excellent value for money if you just want somewhere to sleep and get changed. The room was basic and the bathroom tired but the price was very low, breakfast was filling and all the staff helpful and friendly. It's all very close to the Cairngorms for skiing and walking

Review 68:Room was drab, tiny and dirty. Ditto bathroom. No wifi in the rooms. Way too expensive for what was provided - I would say £35 is fair

Review 69:Great location, friendly staff, awesome breakfast options

Review 70:Beds- two singles pushed together THATS NOT A DOUBLE IN MY WORLD!!! Rock hard as well. Scruffy room - the painter must be NVQ level 2 at the most. Lights not working, hardly any toilet roll, no coffee in the jar. No mention of the 1 am Karaoke when I booked.

Review 71:only thing that wasn't as good as.we expected was the shower. Adequate but not very powerful

Review 72:Hotel was in ideal location. Friendly staff, very welcoming. Hotel room was clean. Tea and coffee making facilities, biscuits and fresh towels all ready in the room for us.

Review 73:The whole place needs an overhaul as the décor is tired. Room was dark due to the paintwork. Bathroom was damp, mould on walls & ceiling. Bathroom heater broken, shower door broken. But with improvement a very reasonably priced place to stay.

Review 74:Location great, staff very friendly and helpful, nice home cooked food at reasonable price. Plentiful breakfast included in cost.

Review 75:Booked for 4 adults and 2 under fives via this website. Arrived to be told (rudely by leaseholder) no chn had been booked in and we were made to feel we'd lied! We have never lied about a booking. It was made in good faith via Internet

Review 76:Cosy bedrooms for our visiting overseas family. Chn shared double bed with parents. We had cosy twin beds. Hearty breakfast but staff shortage.

Review 77:the room was horrible. staff left us on our own and the nearest shops were closed as well. we had to without food for a day. moreover wifi was very poor, bathroom was terrible.

Review 78:there was nothing good to be liked here

Review 79:WiFi was not very good in the rooms. Only got it in certain places but other than that everything was great.

Review 80:Staff were great. Amazing value for money. Great location on the main road of aviemore

Review 81:mouldy shower poorly painted rooms edges and corners just not done door locks loose and wobbly food awful machines in toilets need reconsidered for family audience

Review 82:location was good price was reasonable

Review 83:Everything about the quadruple room - we walked out couldn't stay there. Bathroom and decor had been thrown together out of a cupboard at the end of an annexe. Awful dark red paint job.

Review 84:The hotel is not that clean, and the soundproofing of the wall is not that good. The door of the bathroom is broken and it is not clean in the bathroom. It would be better to decorate the bathroom again!

Review 85:The staff is friendly and helpful.

Review 86:If your wanting a peaceful time then forget it as the bar is below the rooms so all u can here till 1am is the jukebox & the locals singing , we did stay on a Saturday night so maybe it's quieter on week nights

Review 87:Location is good, also great if you like to party in the bar with the locals & the jukebox blaring till 1am

Review 88:They breakfast was totally unacceptable. It had obviously been pre-cooked, to be re-heated prior to being served. Unfortunately, even that hadn't been done properly, as the sausage and mushrooms were still ice cold . The only good part of the breakfast was the toast, which I made myself in the toaster provided. There is no excuse for this whatsoever.

Review 89:Providing ground coffee and a cafetiere as part of the bedroom hospitality tray, instead of the usual sachets of instant coffee, was a nice touch.

Review 90:nothing

Review 91:the breakfast was really good comfy and warm inn the staff was really friendly and meet my childs fussy needs will return .yes people said there was damp in the rooms which is not there fault they have looked into this as there was work men looking at this when I was there.

Review 92:It was hard to get service on the reception. No wifi

Review 93:Staff was really helpful and friendly and our room was clean and in perfect condition. Scottish breakfast was really delicious.

Review 94:squeeky bed, not much soundproofing to other rooms. Shower screen was kinda falling apart.

Review 95:Easy to find. Charming rooms with view of the mountains Very comfortable bed. Tea and coffee in room.Great wifi. Friendly and helpful staff. Great breakfast options. Delicious and generously portioned restuarant food at decent prices. 30 single malts and local beers available at the bar. Stayed two nights - wish I could have stayed longer!

Review 96:Unfortunately that was the worst stay of our journey. The pub seemed to be a nice place from the outside but the food was a bit greasy, nonetheless it was okay. The room we booked was for four people although we just were three. We had 2 bunks bed in the room I didn't anticipated. Beside those the room was quite dirty and there were moths everywhere. (I killed around 5 and my parents even more) The window in the room was slightly broken, so we couldn't close it properly. The bathroom was small and not really clean. The toilet seemed to be pretty old as well as the bathtub. The wifi was only working in the Pub, so there was only public wifi which was quite annoying.

Review 97:The staff was really nice, at least the one that welcomed us. He was really nice to talk to. The breakfast was okay. We had toast and marmelade and could have also chosen between scotish breakfast and so on.

Review 98:Room was badly in need of refurbishment, found insects crawling over our bed in the morning! The carpet was dirty, the silicone round the shower and the ceiling above the shower were black with mould, no soap provided, staff weren't friendly. Booked a double bed and was given a twin, the staffed changed it but all we got was two twin beds pushed together which was very uncomfortable

Review 99:Good location and free wifi, bedding and towels were clean

Review 100:I know the room was reduced but I do not subscribe to the view that cheap must mean poor quality. The room was dirty as was the carpet, the bathroom was mouldy and the outside ventilator was noisy!!! Not at all fit for purpose

Review 101:location, staff and breakfast

Review 102:Room was tired needs a good deep clean and upgrade tbh. Music played late with no consideration to guests! Didn't get the best service at breakfast on second day! Ordered eggs n toast had to make own toast where as the day before it was made for us! My partner asked for a different milk jug as there was a few floaters in ours! The jug from other table was given we didn't know how long it had been there - didn't bother asking again!

Review 103:Staff were really nice n friendly!

Review 104:Not clean. Cutlery and cups were dirty. Massive spider in the hallway. Breakfast was disgusting. Uncooked, my egg was still raw. Very dated place.

Review 105:The drinks are cheap

Review 106:Matress on bed was only fit for the bin was told they couldn.t change it because they didn't have a spare so had to put a spare duvet on top to stop springs making me sore

Review 107:The staff were very nice and location good

Review 108:only light in the bathroom worked ,reported it to man behind bar as no one was at reception told it would be fixed later in afternoon ,went back to room after dinner to find only one light above bed worked .no bedside tables . Toilet and bedroom a disgrace toilet seat did not fit the toilet bowl and bedroom was not very clean and breakfast disgusting , enough said we wont go back.

Review 109:Everything

Review 110:Absolutely disgusting unclean bedroom. Mold on walls. Mold on shower. Marks on bedding. In hoovered carpets for years. Burnt out extension plug. Just minging

Review 111:The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have had the misfortune to attempt to sleep in. It was absolutely terrible. The hotel management has to decide if it is a hotel with a bar or a bar with rooms. The noise from the bar is intolerable especially at throwing out time(1.30am). This is done with no consideration to the hotel guests.

Review 112:The staff were helpful and friendly. The food had a good selection and was very good considering the prices. The breakfast was also good value. The location of the hotel was good and had very adequate car parking.

Review 113:Familys are tiny had mould on the wall above one bunk bed had paper peeling off the wall the bathroom was very damp in mouldy

Review 114:the food was lovely, set in a lovely location

Review 115:Dirty carpets. Rusty bathroom fittings needs a good spring clean they must see that rooms are shabby breakfasts need to be hotter and fresher

Review 116:Friendly staff very welcoming helpfull

Review 117:Needs updating, you can here other guests, toilets and extractor fans in other rooms. The menu is trying to be to fancy for where it is, planer food would be better. Meals over priced.

Review 118:The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is in a good location . good breakfast.

Review 119:rooms could do with a revamp as the one we were in was very tired and in some disrepair and could do with some money spent on them if this was done hotel would have no faults at all

Review 120:staff were lovely and friendly and breakfast was great ,friendly customers in bar

Review 121:Slightly disappointing not to be able to get a full breakfast as I had to leave for a train soon after 0800 and breakfast was not served until that time. I really think these places should serve breakfast earlier though I can understood why it may be difficult. The packed breakfast to take away was fair compensation, though the can of fizzy pop would not have been my first choice of morning beverage!

Review 122:I was touring the country (England & Wales as well as Scotland!) with an all-line rail rover ticket and found the hotel well located a few minutes walk from Aviemore train station on the spectacular Highland main line. The guy who checked me in was really helpful. He had logged the fact that I needed to leave early for a train the following morning (before breakfast) and explained that a packed breakfast of sandwiches could be offered and I was very happy with this. The room was at the front of the building looking out across the glen and was really pleasant and comfortable with good tea making facility. The hotel's public bar was characterful and comfortable with hand-pulled real ales. If returning to Aviemore perhaps for a longer stay I would certainly look to use this hotel again.

Review 123:our room was very small with 2 sets of bunk bed one wall has mould above one of the beds also on of the top bunks has 2 kights bulbs sticking out the wall right against the wall

Review 124:The food was lovely so was the bar service

Review 125:Roooms a bit tired but still very comfy with all you needed

Review 126:The staff were amazing the food was excellent the beds were one of the comfiest I have slept in

Review 127:The whole place needs lots of money spending on it to bring it up to date. It's shabby and tired looking. No mirror in the quad room. Pay extra and go somewhere nicer.

Review 128:Clean beds, clean towels, good breakfasts. Great location.

Review 129:The standard of the room was very poor. Sorely in need of renovation, with marks from damp, dated appearance and very basic feel.

Review 130:The staff were excellent - very friendly and helpful. Great choice of drinks behind the bar and a fantastic breakfast.

Review 131:Room was tiny especially the shower room/toilet. Mattress was very very uncomfortable, also it creaked and groaned.

Review 132:Lovely breakfast in the morning. Some staff friendly and helpful. Can see owner is trying as we stayed here couple of years ago, and can see a few beneficial changes.

Review 133:Very loud music from the bar until 1 am. Tired rooms in need of refurbishment. Very small bathroom. Dirty bar area, particularly on sofas. Poor sound insulation between rooms and bar. Worn out mattresses with springs poking through. Generally a bad choice.

Review 134:Very friendly staff

Review 135:the manager/owner? who booked me in was offhand and not hospitable.

Review 136:breakfast choice was very good and well cooked. bar staff were friendly and excellent choice of ales and spirits.

Review 137:poorly maintained room, amateurish decor. Barman a bit offhand. Breakfast guy very friendly and helpful

Review 138:new beds

Review 139:The rooms could do with a bit upgrading and decorating and new mattress

Review 140:The breakfast was amazing

Review 141:Grubby rooms, decor needs a lick of white paint not RED... Mattresses very poor

Review 142:breakfast

Review 143:Part of breakfast cold ,

Review 144:The location

The Fine Print
