Reviews for Wheal Tor

Review 1:Very friendly owners and staff. We had a great nights sleep. Liked seeing animals wandering around. We liked that you could go for walks straight from the hotel. Good location for getting to other places of interest.

Review 2:The hottub needed a good cleaning

Review 3:The pods - great value for money. The owners were very friendly when approached and very helpful The animals, the view was amazing, the food was great

Review 4:Waterproof sheet on mattress (understandable, but still not ideal).

Review 5:Very friendly and helpful team, excellent home-made food, superb views, friendly animals (sheep, hens, guinea fowl, pigs, ...).

Review 6:Hair on bathroom floor, a kids toothbrush in my partners ear in middle of night, half cooked breakfast. Over priced meals.

Review 7:The area. The real coal fire. The female owner.

Review 8:Ideal location with superb views, value for money accommodation , we were attending a wedding locally so didn't spend long enough on the premises but impressed with what we saw

Review 9:The hotel itself was well below an acceptable standard for the money, the photos on the website are very misleading. The staff were not particularly friendly or welcoming in our experience.

Review 10:The scenery was good.

Review 11:Really helpful staff, helped with early check in so we could be ready for a nearby wedding and helped us organise our evening. Stunning location with great views, and a nice room with a big comfy bed.

Review 12:Leaving!

Review 13:The bar and restaurant was lovely and the food was superb. The staff were friendly and approachable. The location was awesome and feeding the pigs was a treat. Would definitely return and recommend to others.

Review 14:A camp bed was provided for our teenage son with a sleeping bag suitable for an 8 year old girl and a fleece blanket. Not suitable really.

Review 15:Very good WiFi! Could be something to do with the huge mast situated behind.

Review 16:The bbq is under cover but the roof has holes in it so you can't cook under there if it rains.

Review 17:It was a lovely location and was better then I thought,I would not go camping but this was glamping.i thought it was funny the way the sheep just walked into the communal bathroom.Even though it was raining for 2 of the days there was still alot to do in the other little villages.we stayed in a hobbit house and it was so comfortable.

Review 18:The free roaming of the sheep and chickens. The owners were lovely and looked after all our needs including giving us blankets when we sat outside when it was chilly.

Review 19:Lovely stay in a family room. Views were amazing and the chickens and sheep wandering past the windows were exciting for the kids. Breakfast was top notch too. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 20:Breakfast is tasty but expensive for what you get. As it is more a glamping experience and for the cost per night compared to pitching a tent, more facilities should be offered, such as a kettle, mini fridge and towels. The proper beds were very comfortable, but the camp bed we were given for our second child was very uncomfortable.

Review 21:The setting is fabulous and the Hobbit Holes are warm and dry. The showers are powerful and warm and there is a BBQ area.

Review 22:Great location, right on Bodmin moor, very nice bar/restaurant, good food reasonably priced, great breakfast. Room was nice, clean and tidy. Our dog was welcome, could stay with us in the room and was welcome in the rest of the hotel. Would stay again and would definitely recommend

Review 23:We felt that the meal service was very slow - not enough staff in the kitchen we thought, but maybe we were unlucky and they had some staff illness.

Review 24:They grow their own pigs to make their own excellent bacon and sausages. They make their own jams, marmalades and chutneys. They are very welcoming to families and children, and tried hard to please everyone.

Review 25:Paying so much for breakfast, not very clean , mugs in yurt were dirty and the hot tub had not been cleaned for ages with scum so disappointing as had booked looking forward to that bit as only there 2 nights. Toilet and shower block in need of refurb.

Review 26:Amazing views, with walks and lots to see on the doorstop. The Inn had food which was great for drink and tea in the evening, could also use lounge 24hours a day. The Yurt was lovely with own terrace and bbq and stove. Great position , with town nearby for shopping.

Review 27:The cottage wasn't clean on our arrival. We had to hoover, and clean the bathroom before we could use it (hairs, scum, dirt, yuk!) The extra bed we'd asked for wasn't there, and didn't arrive for hours as the staff were 'too busy', when it did arrive we were given the bed to put up ourselves and bedding to make it! Considering this was 8.30pm and we'd been travelling since 4.30am with young children we were not impressed. The food was literally awful! We ate there once. They don't clear your plates away, we think deliberately so you don't get the opportunity to complain. The plates and glasses are left outside all night and most of the next day. We stayed for a week and this was a daily occurrence not a one off. The cutlery was dirty. The fridge in cottage froze everything solid.

Review 28:Views were amazing and sheep and chickens roaming around kept the kids amused. Max the owner was very friendly and helpful. Other staff friendly. The cottage was nice but cold and in need of a good clean. Upstairs the bedrooms are really nice and view from master bedroom is gorgeous.

Review 29:The cottage was a bit cold and a mothy smell, but wouldnt stop me going back again.

Review 30:The food was AMAZING, make sure you have the apple pie with clotted cream. Loved how you could go and pet the sheep. Staff were more than happy to do anything for you and very entertaining.

Review 31:The staff were fantastic and happy to help at any time. Our first room had a problem with the bed so they moved us right away in to a superior room at no extra cost. The food was outstanding and the breakfast was so lovely to come down to in the morning. The inn is well located with beautiful views and it has a very welcoming environment

Review 32:showers and toilet at the hobbit houses. Could use more looking after. A check-up in morning and evening perhaps.

Review 33:Nice people, friendly and helpfull. Verry nice familyroom. Nice bar.

Review 34:Dirty toilet facilities bedding didn't smell clean Resturant menus covered in grease and sauce so didn't eat there !!! The hosts were friendly enough though Booked 2 night but left after the 1st night

Review 35:Nothing

Review 36:Showers and loos were a bit hairy. Breakfast was brusque. No options if you don't like egg. Dogs on leads at all times. Houses built in shade. Poor wifi.

Review 37:The view. The woman who Runs it was lovely. The flowers. The animals wandering.

Review 38:Plastic feel to the mattress protector, as when hot can make you sweat. so we put an extra cover over it then put the sheet on and it we really comfortable.

Review 39:Staff were fab. Location amazing Proper homemade food.

Review 40:We would have appretiated cleaner bathrooms. The hobbit pod could do with a bit more interior fittings. Bedlights, coat hangers and shelves.

Review 41:The outdoor environment and friendly staff.

Review 42:The third bed, the camp bed was basic and my 14 yr old complained it had been uncomfortable. The bathrooms could have been checked/cleaned more often.

Review 43:The huts were really cute, warm and cosy. I had so much fun sleeping over with my teenagers, our first family holiday together for a yr or so. The food was very good though the prices were fairly high. The jacuzzi was fantastic, the landlord, his wife and staff were friendly and the bathrooms were reasonable. The location is wonderful, high up, great scenery and the animals wandering through the camp site at night is magical. Definitely recommended. Will be returning with other friends and families. I felt so chilled out afterwards. Thanks.

Review 44:Drive was a bit unsuitable for my car, but then it seems is most of Cornwall

Review 45:Friendly people, great view, food was excellent, great cider in bar, perfect base for our days out in Cornwall and Devon

Review 46:fantastic location, great food, good accommodation, Mark and Maxine are great Hosts and make you feel welcome. great central location for trips to Cornwall's many attractions

Review 47:As this is a working farm we were woken early by the rooster and friendly sheep. A decent distance from most attractions and shops. Hit and miss shower, somewhat dependent of other guests i assume as its a period property.

Review 48:Owner was helpful and easy to talk to. Views are incredible. Room has all the bare necessities. Quiet and relaxing getaway from the hussle and bussle of the city

Review 49:The access is very bumpy I struggled with my low car! The staff weren't particularly welcoming or helpful! It was the tents first season but garden furniture was unclean we booked both tents One of which leaked!

Review 50:The tents were well equipped with comfortable beds

Review 51:Beds not comfortable and clean very cramed and website said ensuite bathroom but not correct, light and heater not working properly and road leading to property absolutely terrible.

Review 52:Animals

Review 53:We had to leave after a week of relaxation, fab food & friendlyservice...

Review 54:The colourful staff, the Tor characters (not least those vocal Guineafowl), the home sourced diverse menu, the fresh crisp linens. The views- the locals. The not to be missed sunday Roast. The cleanliness. TheDeck & party sized hot-tub.Bodmin Moor - outside ones window. Theknowledgeable friendly folk, homemade Lemon Curd. Gracious Claire'sbespoke jewelry made from feathers & fauna. - last but not least theengaging hosts Maxine & Mark. Oh & the outlook from thebreakfast conservatory!

Review 55:Struggled to find it, but other than that nothing

Review 56:It was a great place with great hosts, and great views, we had a awesome time there really enjoyed it and we are planning on coming back next year :)

Review 57:No issues with our stay

Review 58:Food was great, cooked to order, good price and very tasty. Children enjoyed the animals and the location. Hobbit house was very warm. Good showers. Easy to book and able to take our booking at short notice.

Review 59:Some areas are a little dated and I think the mattresses could do with replacing.

Review 60:Mark and Max were fab and had a great sense of humour. The breakfast was lovely, the bathrooms were modern and clean and tea and coffee facilities were provided. The best views and lovely friendly animals all around.

Review 61:This isn't really a criticism, but be prepared for the Dawn Chorus, which arrives with a vengeance - we woke early first morning to the sounds of Cockerels, chickens, jackdaws, guinea-fowl, blackbirds and a cuckoo... but it was so much better than traffic and people noise!

Review 62:The setting is beautiful, the accommodation, which was essentially a mini-yurt complete with wood-burning stove and a double-bed, was inspiring and stress-relieving, and so lovely, and the menagerie of animals was really great - there is nothing like stroking 2 or 3 tame lambs to make you forget the rest of the world.

Review 63:We have young children so loved the animals running around. We lived the breakfast all home produced. All the staff and owners were lovely and friendly.

Review 64:Shower / washing facilities are crab- washing water is rusty and runs brown (replacing of pipes needed). No soap for 2 days!?! (can't wash your hands properly while you stay in forest full of farm animals that 'go to toilet' everywhere). Breakfast good, but milk served in very rusty little jug (need new ones!for the money you pay rust should not be in the menu). Room/ tent booked for 4 people-there were linen and pillows for 2 only, and lots of dead insects on the sheet under the duvet.

Review 65:Great stunning views. Friendly stuff. Lovely place for children- farm animals which they can feed, play area, freedom...

Review 66:We had a fantastic time at Wheal Tor! We visited with our 3 boys, the staff were very friendly, the hobbit houses were very comfortable and the views were amazing! Will definitely be booking again

Review 67:Information not clear - no towels provided, no drinking glassesprovided, Toilets & shower like a caravan park & not clean;Breakfast mentioned in blurb but additional cost.ROAD Needs grading orfilling in potholes.

Review 68:Position. The host & hostess Excellent breakfast There was asense of fun

Review 69:Seemed a bit run down and disorganised, like it had seen better days. The hobbit houses were fun but bedding a bit musty. Also they don't stay dark when it's morning so my kids were awake and bouncing around at 5.45 am!

Review 70:Lovely views, very relaxed, sheep, chickens and guinea fowl as well as orphan lambs that the children helped feed. Lovely terrace outside.

Review 71:Not much really other than the main property could do with a bit of tlc

Review 72:Made to feel very welcome, food was nice and not expensive. The Hobbit huts wet down a treat with the kids but most of all the location is perfect

Review 73:Nothing. Such a lovely natural experience.

Review 74:Walking in the immediate area and visiting all the old mines. Lots of memories of previous trips to the area. "Hurlers Room" was great. Very comfortable, warm and lovely to see the farm animals passing by! Food was fantastic and so too were the hosts. Will definitely go back again.

Review 75:Very relaxed and friendly with fantastic food! We were all made very welcome, including our dog and this was a superb stop over in the hobbit house, good fun!

Review 76:We stayed in a 'hobbit house' quirky wood building containing beds, heater, socket and light. Made camping more bearable as didn't need to pack the kitchen sink with 2 young kids in tow. Gas bbq and fire pit provided in specific seating area. Scenery was great with wild horses and sheep free roaming the moors. Hotel had guinea fowl, chickens and lambs to occupy the kids and plenty of room for them to run about and play. Hot tub and sauna in a separate block an extra perk and shower was the best i've had, hot and powerful!!!

Review 77:The family feel, always asking us about our day, letting the children feed the animals, the knowledge of the area, the food and really just everything!

Review 78:No where to wash dishes Would have liked a small table inside and some coat hooks

Review 79:Shower block kept clean. Breakfast and other meals can be taken in the hotel Helpful ideas on places to visit

Review 80:Limited wi Fi access but expected in such an amazing location. Not really needed anyway.

Review 81:Lovely surroundings. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and comfortable. Food was excellent quality. Would definitely stay again.

Review 82:Although this is a negative it has not stopped us from wanting to revisit. We cannot wait to go back. The only thing was a littledisappointed with, was our main evening meal... We opted for the homecooked option and didn't really enjoy it. TThe breakfast however, was absolutely lovely (I'm not sure if this was cooked by adifferent chef )and we were told where all the local ingredients weresourced from. Can't wait to go back im the summer.

Review 83:This little hidden gem should be known to All as it lets children andadults reconnect with nature. The host were warm and friendly and madethe stay perfect... The children and ourselves was invited to feed thegorgeous lambs with warm milk... This was definatly the highlight of ourholiday. The only sad thing we found was that we had only booked for onenight... The children loved playing and learning about the copper coalmines under the building.

Review 84:The driveway is shocking - huge potholes. It was a real shame that there was a no kids policy in the hot-tub (which meant the hot tub couldn't be used) - makes no sense... Hot tubs are safe for kids under parental supervision... Forest holidays and centerparcs know this...

Review 85:The hobbit house was cosy and fun. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The welcome pack is a nice touch. The place has huge potential.

Review 86:The drive from the road to the hotel, slow and very bumpy.

Review 87:Friendliness of the owners and their ability to make you feel included. Somewhere I would love to take my wife.

Review 88:The road to the hotel needs to be improved although I appreciate this is easier said then done, land owners etc...

Review 89:The views, the breakfast, lovely staff.

Review 90:Nothing really, the facilities were limited when we visited but we were told this would be the case before hand and planned for it accordingly.

Review 91:The staff were lovely and very welcoming of us and our mad dog and we were the only ones staying there so it was lovely and quiet.

Review 92:Male proprietor was rude and has little social skills. His attitude was burly and unsympathetic. We won't be back. His wife on the other hand is more considerate but sadly the male proprietors lack of insight into how others ought to be treated ruins any welcome she gives.

Review 93:Area, isolation, close to nature, beautiful views.

Review 94:Monday is not a good day to arrive as the owners have a day off and the hotel is looked after by the next door neighbours. When we arrived we could not get hold of them and had to wait for a while before we were finally shown to our rooms. The breakfast varied in terms of quality and the cooked breakfast was not nicely cooked. The overall feel was not as upbeat and professional as you would expect for the price. Decoration was poor and the road up to the hotel was a mad track full of holes.

Review 95:The location is beautiful and not too far. The pub food and drinks were good. Rooms were clean, good size, comfertable and well furnished.

Review 96:We weren't told you need bedding etc in the hobbit house. It was £50 for a wooden shell without breakfast. If we were told there wasn't bedding then we would have booked elsewhere. The heater in the hobbit house was pathetic. It's just lucky we brought sleeping bags just in case.

Review 97:Nice views

Review 98:Drive very slowly along the road to get to the car park as the potholes are big.

Review 99:Loved the scenery, the hobbit Houses looked great so want to visit again. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff very nice and helpful.

Review 100:The bed was rather uncomfortable and the food wasn't quite upto standard.

Review 101:We absolutely loved the hobbit house, it was reasonably priced along with free use of the hot tub. The staff are lovely, we have been here before to stay in the hotel and found the staff to be very helpful and pleasant.

Review 102:We stayed in a hobbit house. Slept in camp beds-surprisingly slept very well. Good value for money. The couple running things were very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent - ate at hotel. Lovely being up on thr moor. Lots of open space.

Review 103:The Hospitality on arrival was welcoming with a Log Fire in the Bar with comfortable seating. The Food Menu was extensive all home cooked together with a fine selection of Local Beers, Lagers and a wonderful selection of Local Ciders at £2.50 per pint. The Food was delicious washed down with a local beer before retiring to a spacious and well kept bedroom with en-suite. The Breakfast was cooked by the owner and nothing was a trouble all in all a very welcoming place to stay and I will return when on business in the area again

Review 104:Recommend to take an extra form of bedding for comfort as the camp bed was uncomfortable.

Review 105:The welcome received during our stay and local information given. Hobbit house was a great experience nestled within the trees. Lovely showers. Breakfast with own reared meat!

Review 106:The campbed for our five year old kept collapsing (there was string to help it stay up but it didn't work) so we ended up just putting him on the mattress on the floor as we didn't want it to happen during the night.

Review 107:Lovely food with a great choice for kids. Friendly staff. My son loved going to help feed the animals in the morning. The location was very nice ad perfect for the wedding we were going to locally.

Review 108:In spite of being almost under the Caradon Hill transmitter, tv reception was poor.

Review 109:Landscape, views and excellent moorland run routes. Proximity to Looe and other coastal attractions is an advantage.

Review 110:Unpretentious and relaxed , we had all our needs met in a friendly and efficient way. We stayed in a Hobbit House which was exciting for the children and meant I didn't have to bother with a tent and I had heating and a comfy bed. The food was great and we didn't bother to have meals anywhere else. All good- many thanks

Review 111:The hobbit houses were great fun for the kids and a twist on basic camping. The hotel was accommodating and people were really friendly. Views were amazing. Good to even just visit for a meal.

Review 112:Turned electric off at 12 am in the night it didn't come back on until 6 am in the morning on our first night.

Review 113:The owners was lovely to speak to.really enjoyed our time there

Review 114:The location is great, stunning views and beautiful surrounding area. The Hobbit huts are quirky, warm and comfortable. The food was outstanding and great value for money. Very friendly atmosphere.

Review 115:We weren't told before hand that you had to bring your own bedding so got charged an additional £10. Nor were we told that if your staying in one cabin with more than 2 people you have to pay for an extra camp bed. As we booked and paid for 3 people this should have been included in the cost. We were also under the impression our stay had been paid for at time of booking which wasnt the case. The owner was very abrupt and rude with no empathy when handling this situation. Overall we found customer service and organisation of the venue to be very poor. The accommodation looks lovely from the outside but you are equipped with the bare minimum on the inside as everything comes charged as extra. The beds are uncomfortable and there should be more than one electric socket as the room caters for 4 people.

Review 116:The location. The views were incredible.

Review 117:Nothing to dislike . Rooms are a little basic, but clean and comfortable, reception and bar area well worn, but homely and nice, after all, you are in the countryside. And what a countryside, superb.

Review 118:Location is stunning, and staff very friendly and helpful. This was a treat for my partner as part of his birthday, and he loved it. Walked to Minions, easy walking, visited the Hurlers and Cheesewring. Food very reasonable and very good too! Loved being far away from the madding crowd! Definitely reccomend.

Review 119:isolated, so stuck using hotel bar if you want a drink, which is pricey (nr£10 for 2 pints and 2 lemonades poured out of a bottle of value pop)

Review 120:the location and Hobbit hole were great. such a peaceful place. good value, but couldnt manage more than one night as a bit cramped with 4 in. host was very dry, some people may not get him but he was attentive. food looked amazing , although did here a few people moan about the wait.

Review 121:I didn't like the futon and ended up sleeping on the put-up bed. We also had people up outside our hut chatting til midnight which kept us awake.

Review 122:I liked the look of the hobbit huts and the setting, the staff were average on friendliness.

Review 123:Cleaning and bedding could be improved on.

Review 124:Location is as far as we are concerned is just about perfect, being 3 miles from my old school town Liskeard, and situated on Caradon Hill with excellent views over s.e. Cornwall

Review 125:water in bath too hot and no way to tone it down, no wi fi in all areas like advertised on site, missleading pictures and information on website,

Review 126:hot tub and scenery

Review 127:I think they should improve the beds, as they are not very comfortable!

Review 128:We spent 2 nights with friends. The idea and the place are very nice. There is BBQ area which is very good as well with a big GAS bbq. For short stay is very good.Toilets were very clean and the water was very hot all the time.

Review 129:No curtain at the window

Review 130:The views were fantastic. A great novelty for the children to stay in a hobbit house with plenty of room to run around. Food was good

Review 131:I would have liked a shelf in the Hobbit Home next to the coat hooks. Just a small thing to make it a little more convenient for placing small items. Also the single bed mattress could have been thicker as it was quite uncomfortable due to being on an uneven spring base.

Review 132:The location, in the Woods with animals roaming freely was amazing. It was fantastic to have cows and sheep greet you at our Hobbit home door each morning. The toilet block was close, clean and very adequate for purpose. The owners and staff at The Hotel were friendly and welcoming and the food was lovely.
