Reviews for The Washington

Review 1:Cold. Heating doesn't come on until 8pm and 6:30am. Staff were good at giving me a heater though. Main thing I disliked was the very cold bathroom. Not sure when the heating comes on there. It was well down into single digits temperature. Also, old towels left thrown on the floor. Would be good to have staff come in and do a mini clean every hour or so.

Review 2:Breakfast had a nice selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, croissants etc, and an impressive hot selection to order from, including a vegan option. Staff were great too. I would have liked the food to be hotter when it came out though.

Review 3:I understand there are tight rules around breakfast times. We arrived at about midnight Tuesday night. breakfast was 7-9 We were 10 minutes after last breakfast time and were told. we were to late

Review 4:Location to the town. Spot on for the university. The staff were great. Parking at Hotel excellent . Would definitely stay again

Review 5:The first room we were allocated had what looked like vomit on the wall. They moved us to another room. Whilst the walls were clean, there was a very large damp patch over the window and peeling wallpaper because of this. When we left in the morning there was a snail or slug trail down the length of the sleeve of my black coat which had been hanging on a chair near the window!

Review 6:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good and the location was very good.

Review 7:CAR PARKING: Please be warned... I arrived around 08:30 for a meeting nearby hoping to park my car in the carpark of the hotel and get to my meeting. When I arrived the tiny car park was completely full (as many spaces were reserved for a company and not hotel guests). I asked where I should park and was told to park in a public car park - which cost me £10 for the day!! HIDDEN CHARGES: - car parking in hotel: £6 per day on top of room fee - wifi (unless you book with them direct) - late check out THE HOTEL: The building itself is in poor condition. Though the rooms were clean...the words 'polish', 'can't', 'turd' and 'you' come to mind. - the first room I was given had wallpaper peeling off the walls (see pictures) and an outdated bathroom with cracked toilet, I requested another room but the second was not a great deal better and I was informed by the staff that 'it's a budget hotel and all the rooms are of the same standard'. This new room had a hole in bathroom floor where the shower has leaked and the floorboards rotted through (see pictures), again some missing wallpaper. The bed was obviously as old as the bead spread. The window and curtain had rot around them. The walls are paper thin and I got two poor nights sleep, being woken up by other guests. At one point I rang reception at 2am when I had had enough of the loud american woman next door skyping her friends... Overall I was very disappointed by this hotel, I don't think it's value for money at all, it's only saving grace was the polite and friendly staff. Never staying there again.

Review 8:The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was OK

Review 9:It'd be churlish to criticise anything - it's a relatively old and shabby hotel for £40 a night so I'm not expecting the Four Seasons.

Review 10:Once again, here is a demonstration of how a stay in a relatively shabby hotel can be transformed by friendly and accommodating staff. Room was tiny - like living in a space capsule for a day but lovely reception and restaurant staff helped me to overlook the relative privation. My daughter who joined me for breakfast even commented on the positive attitude of the staff (East European of course, fantastic). Nice to have dedicated parking too (though spaces are limited). Big choice of breakfasts for fussy or trendy eaters too.

Review 11:The heating was off and the room was not warm enough the information provided to us about the late checkout was wrong, the staff didn't seem to care at all.

Review 12:Location is good and quiet, the breakfast is great

Review 13:Unfortunately the heating wasn't working and although a heater was provided, with no double glazing the room remained cold.

Review 14:Breakfast was excellent all freshly made. Location good Staff good.

Review 15:The whole place is in desperate need of a refit and for the money, I was expecting more. The room was at the top of three flights of steep, narrow stairs (no lift) and, whilst it was clean, it was small and very dated. Single glazed Windows that rattled when open, the bed had seen better days and you had to run around in the shower to get wet. Parking is first come first served which we had to pay £6 for on top of the room rate and there's no bar in the hotel.

Review 16:Helpful friendly staff go some way to make up for the shabbiness of the hotel. Very good location, close to the centre of Bristol. Good breakfast!

Review 17:we have to pay extra many for wifi, because we book it on booking.com, if we book from their own website, the wifi will free

Review 18:there are many kinds of tea and coffee we can drink for free

Review 19:Facilities were basic. The shared bathroom had no shower. The radiator in the bedroom did not work and there was no remote controller for the television.

Review 20:Location

Review 21:The only problem might be the number of stair cases one needed to negotiate if not very mobile but we liked the quirkiness of it. It is an old building and our ensuite did need a refresh but was clean and warm.

Review 22:Breakfast was excellent, well presented and good choices available in a light airy room. There was a night porter on duty when we arrived just after midnight who was very helpful. The room felt clean, warm and the refreshments available including the fruit were very acceptable.

Review 23:Hotel In need of decoration and updating. Rather shabby and small double room.

Review 24:Good location in relation to the theatre performance we had booked Reception staff extremely pleasant and helpful

Review 25:Very tired and dated, you have to pay extra for wifi and parking. Didn't feel very clean, a splatter mark by the room door. Very expensive for what you get.

Review 26:Purely the location. A 20 minute walk straight into the city centre. Good breakfast.

Review 27:Friendly staff who made me feel very welcome.Comfy bed, great shower and quiet location.Very near museums, bars, restaurants, buses and only 10-15 min walk to Bristol Center Recommend Brown's.Turtle Bay and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

Review 28:The radiator and towel rail in room did not work and bathroom window drafty as did not shut properly. We were given a heater as no one to fix radiator and towel rail

Review 29:The hotel and staff over all were excellent

Review 30:Everything's a little tired.. It needs some TLC. Floor boards really creeky and the doors all need a bit of oil! Very noisy. I had what I assume to be a boiler rattling and clanking above my head all night. The breakfast wasn't really that great. We went down half an hour before the end of service and things were either over cooked or soggy.

Review 31:Really lovely, polite, knowledgeable staff. Breakfast staff were particularly good. The location is great.. Just a 5 min walk to bars and restaurants on Whiteladies Road and a 15 min walk to the centre.

Review 32:Key to room wouldn't work, had to leave unlocked to get back in. Slept with next-door neighbors football match blaring ALL night.

Review 33:Funky falling apart hotel, not for the faint-at-heart

Review 34:Would have liked a proper quilt rather than just a sheet and blanket on the bed. The room was quite dark even with the lights on.

Review 35:Good breakfast included in room rate.

Review 36:Though it's good value, the hotel is shabby and badly in need of a through modernisation and renovation. Bedroom facilities are fairly basic, and the shower was very variable in temperature and only a trickle of water came out of it.

Review 37:Good location and pretty friendly staff

Review 38:Room needs redecorating. Wouldn't cost much

Review 39:Location is excellent for people who want to wander around Clifton. Parking for £6 a night is very good. Breakfast was nice and served quickly.

Review 40:Heating could have been better, we asked for an additional blanket, we were given one and a heater. The bed could have been bigger. Upgrading of the room required.

Review 41:Easy to travel to the city centre. Close to restaurants.

Review 42:The room smelt of damp we couldn't hang our clothes in the cupboard the curtains did not fit the window . The entrance door to the room was very dirty . Needed a good clean and a repaint would not stay there again

Review 43:* Extra charge for Wifi * Missing remote for TV & replacement didn't work either. * Very dated furniture & plumbing!

Review 44:* Large comfortable warm double with sofa + bath with breakfast for reasonable £73 midweek. * Cafetiere & kettle in room with good choice of coffees, teas, biscuits & fruit. * Quality breakfast with buffet & good choice of hot food cooked to order. Do Not Miss!! * Sensible check in/out times * Professional helpful staff

Review 45:The interior furniture was very old, bath has a lot of rust around the taps, toilet handle is mud.very noise through the windows,

Review 46:Friendly staffs and nice breakfast

Review 47:No lift, too many stairs. breakfast was adequate, except sausage was too well cooked, it was like chewing rubber.

Review 48:Good size room, modern shower, clean.

Review 49:Parking is difficult and I was not told about the car park behind the hotel until I was leaving! The bathroom and toilet were across the landing and down the corridor.

Review 50:The breakfasts were excellent and the staff were very helpful.

Review 51:We perhaps paid a little over the odds as it was marathon weekend but we didn't know that beforehand!

Review 52:The staff were so helpful and the breakfast was lovely!

Review 53:We found the room to be rather outdated, old & tired needs updating. It was very clean. Bathroom very tired and in need of TLC.

Review 54:The staff were extremely helpful and polite. Could not do enough for you.

Review 55:Cracks in wall, ceiling, sink. No elevator. Smell of smoke through air vents was gross.

Review 56:Staff were friendly, breakfast was generous, location was good, little touches - drinks, toiletries - good.

Review 57:The building needs some serious money spent on it . Damp patches on the outside walls in the bedroom and bedroom walls need painting

Review 58:Friendly staff, well located hotel

Review 59:The basement floors which contained twin beds were small, dark and the smells weren't to great

Review 60:The first floor double rooms were clean fresh and had a sufficient amount of space

Review 61:Website photos make it look better than it is, would be fine if you got one of the rooms in the photos. Rooms generally shabby (we had 1 double and 2 singles), peeling wallpaper, one carpet totally threadbare in places, scuffed paintwork, tatty curtains. Beds had blankets and bedspread and not duvet, though sheets seemed clean. Shower came from bath taps and was difficult to control. No lift. Not up to the standard I would usually go for but feel bad writing this as hotels of an acceptable standard would have been 3-4 times the price.

Review 62:Good location, lovely breakfast, pleasant and helpful staff, bed and bathroom clean. Ask for a quiet room at the back. Worth the money if you don't mind shabby décor.

Review 63:when we arrived there was no parking. not impressed with a family room not worth the money. our toilet flush would not work would never stay here again and would not recommend this hotel! staff were very kind and we did get discount but full discount would have been better as this was my sisters 50th birthday and she not impress ed

Review 64:did not like the hotel at all and would never go back

Review 65:The décor was very dated & being on the 2nd floor meant a very long trudge up stairs.

Review 66:The location was perfect for walking to everywhere we needed. The breakfast was very good & the waiting staff particularly efficient.

Review 67:The rooms were dusty and the carpets were all stained and the general cleanliness of the rooms was poor. the decor needed updating and the curtain in one of the rooms was almost hanging of the rail and the window was broken so would not shut properly. The shower in our room was not very good. The parking was round the back of the hotel up a narrow road and then through some shuttter doors but was not explained properly by the receptionist (language barriers)

Review 68:The Breakfast was the best experience of the whole stay. It was lovely and they catered for Gluten free as well which was good as my daughter is on a gluten free diet.

Review 69:The heating only came on for 3 hours in the evening. Was cold part of the time. Bedside light was too bright. Had to turn it off.Carpet a bit tatty.

Review 70:Location was perfect for my purposes. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly.Good choice of in room drinks available and a big mug.

Review 71:Although the room was spacious and comfortable the carpets and decoration could do with a refurb.

Review 72:Location good, excellent food in the pub/restaurant next door, staff friendly.

Review 73:-

Review 74:Really friendly staff who helped with printing train tickets and looking after luggage. Wonderful complimentary breakfast with lots of choice. Room was clean and comfortable.

Review 75:Decor more than a bit tired and outside a bit scruffy and unappealing. No notice that parking would not be available due to line repainting during our stay.

Review 76:Friendly, helpful staff. Clean and comfortable room. Very good breakfast. Good value.

Review 77:The bath shower was a little confusing having instructions would be beneficial as I arrived at the hotel straight from work and wanted a nice soak before getting ready to go out. i put the taps on and then returned to the bedroom. Then i suddenly heard a loud gushing noise the shower had started up. Eventually discovering that the shower works by pressure. Turn the taps on high and it sets the shower off. would benefit from a larger range of snacks and drinks as a fair walk to the local shop.

Review 78:A friendly warm hotel, great breakfast with cheerful happy staff.

Review 79:An abrupt phone call from reception at 3am asking me to turn off my television, my television was not on. Should be highlighted there is no elevator.

Review 80:Cleanliness of the room, location and the breakfast, friendly staff.

Review 81:Found the room too hot during the night but was able to open the large sash window for fresh air. Worry about finding parking place each night.

Review 82:Being able to come and go, make tea/ coffee, access to wi fi, friendly staff.

Review 83:We booked this hotel for the parking, but it really has a few spaces, cause they rent it to an external company. The hotel itself is really old and gives a dirty impression. Furniture, carpets, ceilings... I will certainly not visit again

Review 84:It could do with a lick of paint here and there, and a bit of soundproofing wouldn't go amiss - or at least get a can of WD40 out and fix some of the squeaky doors!

Review 85:The hotel was clean, comfortable and well-situated.

Review 86:The shower holder was broken, which was reported to reception and not resolved and we were still checked into the room without being made aware, so the morning shower wasn't a pleasant one. Water temp very temperamental also. There wasn't any spare parking spaces.. Which meant having to park away from the hotel. No lift. Stain on the bed cover and could do with double glazing to help noise pollution from busy main road and what seemed like quiet a populated area with students being drunk.

Review 87:Breakfast included is always a bonus, although a tad early considering you don't have to check out until 11am.

Review 88:Blankets on beds - duvets with covers preferable. Bedspreads quite marked. Feather pillows need replacing. Dated decor but that's to be expected in guest house.

Review 89:Friendly well informed staff, good location with a tasty and varied breakfast. Good value for money. It was nice to get a late check out of 12.30 for only £5.

Review 90:It was not cheap at all and Bed bugs bit me!!!!!! I have stayed beforein 2 starts B&B as I kind of like the traditional English style youcan enjoy there but the Washington experience was outrageous.Everything was extremely dirty! Carpet, linen with stains from a poorlaundry service, old and uncomfortable mattress with massive brownishstains (as I looked next morning) . I did like nothing before going tobed but for a one late night stay was fine until I woke up in themiddle of the night finding myself scratching my feet and wrists...ICouldn't of course sleep anymore as I knew I was getting bitten bybed bugs. At departure I did only get a simple "I'm verysorry" from the receptionist who looked not surprised by mycomplain. I regret I did not take pics about the place but I was toodisgusted to be longer there.

Review 91:Nothing

Review 92:The wifi didn't work in my room, even though you have to pay extra for it. The breakfast was of really poor quality. The breakfast staff needs more training on English staple food.

Review 93:The staff was lovely

Review 94:We had a problem with noisy pipes in the bathroom, but even that was fixed the same day we reported it.

Review 95:Great value for money hotel at the top of the hill from city centre. Clean and comfy room (twin) and a very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 96:I spent the weekend in Bristol for my Graduation. I booked a single room for my mother and a double one for my girlfriend and me. We were all highly satisfied with our stay at The Washington. The rooms were nice and clean, as was the rest of the place. The staff was kind at all times; always smiling and willing to help. It was a cold weekend and the heating was on; first time that this happens to me at a b&b in the UK, and I've been in many.

Review 97:Room very tired, carpet bare in places, underground low ceiling bathroom, no light near mirror. Parking very limited.

Review 98:Friendly staff, good breakfast, room clean as possible.

Review 99:The hotel is very run down. Staff more interested in their cigarette break. Room small, bed uncomfortable and hairs in bed. Unable to shut bathroom door. Stains on carpet.

Review 100:Very old feel to the place, room felt like it was from the 70's. The room was tiny, and it felt like every time someone flushed a toilet in the place you could hear it. Entrance to the room felt quite dilapidated.

Review 101:Staff were nice

Review 102:A little shabby and our room was next to the kitchen which was noisy.

Review 103:Great location; close enough to walk to both Clifton Village and city centre. Good breakfast, friendly staff and parking very handy.

Review 104:Returning late we had to clean the room and make beds 7.00 skip removed, set off car alarm. 7.30 drills going on wall next to the bed. No apology, Manger told us our bedroom was locked from the inside all day.

Review 105:Breakfast good Reception staff on arrival very helpful

Review 106:Décor is a little dated, but not a major down-side.

Review 107:Everyone was very friendly. The breakfasts were included and offered a lot of variety, all of which were tasty. The hotel has parking right behind it which is accessed via a shuttered gate, and they were very nice about letting us stay parked there for the day, even after we'd checked out.

Review 108:People running up and down stairs at 2am, rude reception in the morning, different person when checking in was lovely. No early breakfast on weekend and having to pay for wifi just because we booked through booking.com

Review 109:Staff and location were great car was secured in there private car park breakfast was excellent the room for what I paid had everything I needed and bed was comfy.

Review 110:Hotel definitely needs an update. Clean but very "old & shabby" Breakfast was ok but could have been so much better.

Review 111:It was very close to centre of Bristol with good bus links. Staff were very friendly.

Review 112:Rushed us at breakfast ,cooked meal offered by staff not shown or told about juice, cereal etc, room facing road noisey traffic ! Hotel dated needs refurb !

Review 113:Friendly staff ,near to town

Review 114:Old building in need of some love and attention, dirty grouting in bathroom tired bed and bathroom fittings

Review 115:Friendly reception, good location and competitive price, good breakfast

Review 116:Most of the neighbouring buildings were being renovated so initial impressions were not good.

Review 117:Despite it being very busy with guests, the staff were always very attentive. The breakfast room was a little small to cope with the volume of guests but again the staff were very attentive and the breakfast very good. I would certainly stay there again.

Review 118:Bath drain clogged with hair, room a bit dingy, wifi wasn't working, room in basement

Review 119:Fantastic location, parking, cheap, decent breakfast, friendly staff.

Review 120:The wifi wasn't working for the duration of the stay

Review 121:The hotel is quite old so accommodation is reasonably basic but very comfortable and very clean with a good breakfast.

Review 122:the bathroom was not clean so l had to call the staff back in clean the loo again. They were very prompt and apologised but not good hygiene standards. Your photos on the website are misleading. Looks much better than it actually is. Grotty reception and entrance.

Review 123:Location and tea in the room.

Review 124:A few daddy long legs in the bathroom

Review 125:Very nice tea and coffee selection within the room. Lighting in the room was nice with both bedside lamps. Breakfast was lovely with very accommodating and friendly staff.

Review 126:Room needs refurbishing

Review 127:Staff were very friendly and efficient at reception and at breakfast. Room was clean. Good choice of complimentary hot drink options. Parking was tight but comes as a good option in this location which is good for the University.

Review 128:Only one light in room working (next to bed) and so got light bulbs from reception and put them in ourselves. Water was very hot due to boiler problem

Review 129:Location, staff friendly, breakfast pretty good full English Secure parking

Review 130:Having to pay extra for parking on top of money paid for room. Electronic switch didn't seem to work properly.

Review 131:Lovely breakfast in the morning. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Review 132:Lack of WIFI as there was an equipment problem. The TV in our room was faulty with many channels not receiving a signal.

Review 133:Breakfast and dining staff were good. When we reported WIFI and TV problems we were given free parking as compensation.

Review 134:Bed base stained, poor cleanliness throughout, in need of entire updating and re-decoration. Nor did I like the fact that we had no hot water and that the guest house got the bill wrong in the first instance.

Review 135:Location, clean sheets, clean bathroom.

Review 136:Tired decor, inpartuclar the bathroom which had bubbling lino and no bath mat/anti slip flooring. The hotel smelt musty in general and did not feel particuarly clean

Review 137:relaxed staff

Review 138:The standard of the room was very poor for this money it costs. The room was in basement with almost no access to a day light. Wall paper was coming off, carpet was very old and black on the edges, and in the bathroom there was mold on the walls. The whole room smells of the damp, but it is probably because of the basement.

Review 139:Location is realy good. Stuff was nice.

Review 140:Staff were unhelpful the door was left open after they supposedlycleaned the room. Décor was pretty bad and cleanliness was poor. Thetv was as old as the hills and reception varied according to theaerial connection. Remote was probably manufactured in the lastcentury. Overall it did not warrant the two stars it had. Very poorvalue for money.

Review 141:Not a thing!!

Review 142:Too expensive for "non ensuit" No chicken or beef options in restaurant, only pork (not suitable for muslim traveler to eat pork, had to choose vegetarian english brakfast".. The WiFi should have been less expensive or free (though it was good) Squeaky floors Thin walls (was hearing some of my neighbours TVs) and phone calls

Review 143:Staff (especially Oriana).. comfortable bed.. good breakfast (other than the meat thing)..
