Reviews for George and Dragon Hotel, West Wycombe

Review 1:Room 2 above kitchen - noise from below and odour from extractor fan wasn't pleasant. Other rooms would be a better choice.

Review 2:Great food, friendly bar staff, very interesting history. Go back in time to 1748 and find out all about the Hellfire Club, still going strong today.

Review 3:My room was above the kitchen fans and stank of meat/fat/cooking. the smell was there all the time, couldn't get the shower to work.

Review 4:Lovely location, great food and wine, lovely comfy resaurent and bar. bed was comfy and room was nice.

Review 5:The hotel did not tell us that the Sunday meals stopped at 6.00pm so when we went for a meal we were in for an unpleasant surprise. Tables were set for meals, people were eating but locals told us where we could eat locally. (They added that this wasn't the first time it had happened). After a day travelling, this is not what we expected. We had arrived at 3.00pm so it wasn't as if we were on the last minute! We ate at a local pub a few miles away. On checking out, we weren't asked if we had had breakfast ( we decided not to the night before) we were just given the receipt as the bill had been authorised automatically. No mention if it was correct, no mention if we had had a pleasant stay! A lovely old hotel with staff who did not know how to treat paying customers.

Review 6:Lovely room. Very comfortable. Very clean.

Review 7:Long wait at the bar for a drink as it was busy and only appeared to be one barperson

Review 8:Very friendly staff & comfy bed. Delicious breakfast and lots of it.

Review 9:The manager's interpersonal skills need improving. We weren't aware of an additional charge for our tiny dog. He smiled when I told him the hotel sign squeaked outside our room in the wind all night and kept us awake. Downstairs staff lovely.

Review 10:Spacious room, nice bathroom, comfy bed. Bring able to take our dog - all areas.

Review 11:Light wasn't working on arrival and seemed an issue. Television was poor and purple in picture.

Review 12:Lovely old and characterful hotel with wonderful view over Wycombe Church, friendly staff and large room. Amazing food, well served and very good sized portions. The best breakfast I have ever had.

Review 13:My room was cold in November when I stayed because it was heated by storage heaters and the bed was so soft it was like a water bed.

Review 14:It was very nice and clean great value. Looked lovely and had quaint pub in it

Review 15:Wifi poor no password given. Waited 15 mins to be checked in. Got overcharged had to ask for refund. Told menu in room but wasnt. Kettle plugs in on floor.!

Review 16:Location quiet size of room

Review 17:We arrived and they didn't have our booking We were given rooms and then we asked for a room to be changed as it was above the kitchen - noisy extractor fan and smelled of food They said they would change room and then didn't get back to us we waited in bar whilst waiting for the room then were told the person was "gone off shift" We were overcharged as rooms charged twice on my card and I have not had a response yet

Review 18:good food manager in the evening was helpful

Review 19:Bit noisy from the pub below and lamp-post straight outside the window lit up the room all night. The room was very dated, but everything worked fine

Review 20:Good location and excellent food in the pub / restaurant. Big room and good TV.

Review 21:Shower needs updating, could only get a trickle of water from it.

Review 22:Lovely food (but a bit expensive). Welcoming staff. Beautiful building. Had asked for a four poster bed which I got, great mattress but the four poster part a bit feeble.

Review 23:Room was dirty Floors uneven causing falls Too noisey with local drinkers and family room close to this Fire alarm went off 3 times Had no sleep Wouldnt stay again

Review 24:The food and waiters

Review 25:The locals let the place down badly, racist ranting village idiots,I thought these sort of clicky little places only had one idiot, but all walks of life seemed happy to join in ,the owner needs to take his pub back if he's serious about letting rooms

Review 26:The staff were sound rooms sound food great

Review 27:We had a brilliant time and the staff were great. Beautiful place and a wonderful part of the UK. I had called before to arrange a surprise for my husband and they did not let me down, it was wonderful. A big thank you to all the staff.

Review 28:Room 9, needs revamping, light switch in bathroom was faulty, extractor fan did not work, tired decoration and fittings, and the smallest TV I have ever seen, or not, if you were sat on the bed,

Review 29:Although we got free wifi, wifi was very slow. Phone signal also bad. We had evening meal at the restaurant and my husband ordered a ribeye steak that cost £23 but was inedible. Couldn't even cut with the steak knife, let alone chew. We also booked a four poster bedroom but we only got a small standard room. Tea bags in the room were exposed, like just taken straight out of a box and were placed in an uncovered cup, not individually packed, not hygenic.

Review 30:Large clean white bath towels. Ample parking space on the premises.

Review 31:Staff poorly trained.Breakfast table lacking basics like sugar, spoons,no orange juice or milk out for use.

Review 32:Comfy bed large bedroom.Breakfast very good food.

Review 33:Terribly bathroom shower was in the bedroom light bulbs blown, stripped wiring, TV didn't work first night,

Review 34:Worst hotel stay I've had, breakfast had no juice, no milk, no cereal all for £11.95

Review 35:The only problem I had was a lack of phone reception but I managed.

Review 36:I lived the history of the place. It is a gorgeous old building. I could almost touch the bedroom cling and had to duck to get through the door. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was lovely.

Review 37:Smelt a bit musty in places.

Review 38:A quaint old Inn with a delightful atmostphere. We had booked one night, on a Saturday. Our room was basic with plenty of space, clean & had all we needed. We were not disturbed by any noise. The evening meal was excellent with friendly, attentive staff.

Review 39:Slightly disappointed with the 4 poster bed because it was far too soft.Another thing we did not like was that were charged the full amount ofour stay the day we arrived, we felt that was very sharp practice. Thebreakfast was very nice but very expensive at £12 a head per dayespecially as we thought it was included in the daily rate!!

Review 40:Well presented hotel with nice touches. Very pleasant and enjoyablestay. Liked the area.

Review 41:Terrible mattress and the continental breakfast is awful. No fresh fruit, cheap, horrible croissant and we constantly had to ask for milk, juice, jam, toast, everything!

Review 42:Lovely old building

Review 43:Lovely cottage style accommodation but no real bed ready for our daughter so had a mattress instead put out for her. Shower not working properly: very hard to adjust temperature. Toilets: flush getting stuck on several occasions (water sound all night).

Review 44:Loved the food for dinner as we finally decided to stay for dinner: great dishes....at London prices though.... Staff very friendly, young and ready to help. The pub was the best !

Review 45:My only concern was that the (expensive) breakfast was not quite as well presented as I had anticipated. Having said that, it was tasty and clearly made from good ingredients. I was surprised there was no orange marmalade.

Review 46:West Wycombe is a charming and quaint village, well worth a visit in its own right. The hotel is full of character, redolent of its origins as a coaching inn. I accepted the offer of an upgrade to a larger room with four-poster bed and was pleased that I'd done so as it enhanced the sense of staying somewhere special. The bed itself was remarkably comfortable.

Review 47:Breakfast was a tad disappointing. It wasn't a buffet as stated- we needed to ask for everything. It wasn't really worth the money everything else was great though.

Review 48:The location was ideal. The room was lovely- loved the duck wall paper! The staff were friendly and having the pub downstairs was a huge plus! Dinner was great too. The Hellfire Caves closeby were a lot of fun!

Review 49:The room was above the kitchen so at meal times the extractor fans made it sound like there really was a dragon under my bed!

Review 50:The food was gorgeous the staff friendly and helpful and the garden pretty

Review 51:Agreed time for breakfast as 08.00am, but due to no one turned up toopen restaurant we and staff were left waiting. This delayed our overalldeparture unduely I am afraid, which was quite annoying. Else wewouldn't have stopped for breakfast. The room was very noisey due tomain road siting.

Review 52:Nice size room. Friendly staff & reception!!

Review 53:The inn is very old and the bedroom did smell quite musty but we were able to open the windows and air it out, so it wasn't really a problem.

Review 54:All the staff were friendly and efficient, the locals were also friendly and enjoyed a chat. The breakfasts were great and other meals that we ate in the pub / restaurant were also lovely. Our huge room, with a four poster bed was fairly quiet, considering it's location and the through traffic did quieten down during the night, we were't bothered by traffic noise.

Review 55:Looked out on a tatty patio full of rubbish, constant smell from kitchen entered room, noise from below during opening hours. Furniture in room I would not have in my garage. Old English Inn that has lost direction . Even walking through entrance for stage coach all I could see was mops visibly parked at the back of the kitchens. Thought a “deluxe Kingsize” was attributed to 4 poster in photo´s. No labels on photos. Breakfast charged too much tea and coffee additional charged?? Cooked breakfast OK Spanish Girl friend had toast (1 round un buttered +marmalade) still charged 7.75+2.50=10.25GBP The toast was really burn´t. Room Lack of Toilet paper English Inn should have English artefacts, it seemed mish mash in this hotel Arrived late Friday, 9:45 could not get a sandwich or clear indication where to go Frankie and Benny´s save the evening

Review 56:The village and the walks We left 1 day early to stay in a suitable hotel

Review 57:room was 'un refurbished' i was told because it was the cheaper booking.com price, wifi wasn't available in my room but was described as available in the advert, bed was very soft, bathroom outdated (see above)

Review 58:Very pleasant staff, great quirky old building, great food

Review 59:No shampoo supplied only bath/shower gel so couldn't wash hair. No shower or attachment just unclean bath.

Review 60:Very comfortable beds, Fantastic breakfast Large room, lovely character building

Review 61:Lovely historic hotel. Excellent food (including the biggest full English breakfast I've ever had in a hotel!) and good selection of real ales and wines in bar.

Review 62:Only electric heaters in the rooms. Ghosts!!

Review 63:Nice old fashioned pub/hotel. Ample parking and close to our conference venue (Adams Park). My room was large and four poster bed comfy. Food (dinner & breakfast) was wonderful.

Review 64:It's worth knowing the bathroom is old-fashioned, no shower!! A shower would be better but it adds to the old-world feel.

Review 65:We loved our stay at George and Dragon! A true English pub with great food and beer. Delicious breakfasts. The staff were all very friendly. The quaint old-fashioned building was amazing and the warm fire a delight. They were very understanding with our three kids. Lots to see nearby and a good spot to visit Harry Potter studios. Hughenden Manor is worth a visit. So much nicer than staying in an industrial style hotel down the road.

Review 66:The carpet in the bedroom was disgustingly filthy and threadbare in the toilet where the door lock was broken. The wardrobe door would not stay closed either. The carpet on the stairs was very grubby. Its proximity to the road made it a bit noisy early in the morning.

Review 67:The food was quite good value. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The open fire in the bar was wonderful. It had a lot of character. The car park and garden were very good.

Review 68:one or two 'noisy' bar customers but 'hey ho'. Breakfast room a bit chill & dull, but good food.

Review 69:Staff very pleasant and ready to help & service requirements. Bar very cosy with a nice open fire.

Review 70:Staff in morning were rude grumpy and took a long time to take breakfast order.

Review 71:Evening staff were excellent. Nothing was too much hassle. Nice meal for dinner.

Review 72:Need to get the broken glazing pane replaced and the room would benefit from a fresh lick of paint however neither of these stopped us from enjoying our visit. TV is very small, but it was ok.

Review 73:Great location, lovely old building and plenty of car parking. Easy access to M40. Loved breakfast, very well presented and great coffee. We were visiting relatives locally and so didn't eat in the evening on this occasion, but it's location is so good for us that we will be back. Great old inn with lots of beams and pet friendly too!

Review 74:Breakfast was a bit hap-hazard with not enough choice of cereals and no fruit.

Review 75:Staff - friendly and helpful Bar - warm and cosy Dinner - good selection Location - nice village setting Large room

Review 76:Shower hard to control. Everything in need of refurbishing. Carpets quite dirty.

Review 77:Character, location, price, courtyard, historical interest. Would recommend and would visit again. Two older children were in a partitioned room.

Review 78:I do not like ensuite facilities to be built into the bedroom. Noise from traffic Noise from Bar below Smell of stale cooking in the room Size of the television was unacceptable

Review 79:Food was good Beer was ok Bed was comfy Shower was as it should be

Review 80:Lots of silly little things which would probably be easy to fix but made the difference, eg. underlay poking out from under the carpet, heater having been replaced due to what looked like the old one burning out, but the wall behind not being repainted. Basically a bit more attention to detail (and a handyman to fix a few things up) would go a long way. And maybe a customer service training session for a couple of staff!

Review 81:Great breakfasts and a nice pub to hang out in. Staff were a bit of a mixed bunch - some were excellent, others were a bit uncommunicative and (to be blunt) a little surly at times. Rooms were fine but some just need a few finishing touches to bring them up to standard. We stayed for a little over two weeks on and off, and overall were happy with our time there. Not perfect but met our requirements.

Review 82:The bed was atrocious. It sagged terribly in the middle and sloped to the sides. We seriously considered sleeping on the floor as we weren't getting much sleep on the bed.

Review 83:Had to wait for a space in the breakfast room as it was not large enough to seat all guests at the same time.

Review 84:Our room was full of character and the bed was very comfortable. All staff are very pleasant. The bar has a lovely atmosphere. Breakfast good (apart from waiting for a table).

Review 85:Was located on busy main road which was dangerous and could hear some traffic noise in our room which was overlooking the road. Waited over an hour for food which wasn't ideal with children!

Review 86:Lovely old characterful hotel. Clean and comfortable ,quirky and different, much more interesting than a holiday inn etc. Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely home cooked food.

Review 87:The restaurant menu gives the impression of complicated, accomplished cooking, but was actually very poor. The duck was overcooked, 'vegetable noodles' had no vegetables and no sauce, burger was black outside and pink inside, and for £10-15 a main course this was very disappointing.

Review 88:Good price for a family room, and staff were friendly and informative. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 89:A little application of bleach would not be amiss in the bathroom.

Review 90:The friendly, informal but efficient welcome and check in was a delight, the room and facilities were excellent though a little tired in terms of decor.Good food and excellent selection off beers.

Review 91:Rooms a little basic, no soap or shampoo in the room !

Review 92:The food and the guy running the bar, I presume he was the owner. Great fun, out kids want to go back to see him again !

Review 93:Small tv, Jacuzzi that didn't work.

Review 94:Huge bedroom and bathroom. Extra blankets, lots of pillows, hairdryers, comfy chair and gigantic wardrobe. Delicious and plentiful breakfast.

Review 95:Interesting, centuries old building. Not a straight line or right-angle in the whole place! But my room was beautifully refurbished and all the plumbing was new and worked perfectly. Limited but excellent and balanced dinner menu. 4 real ales available in the bar. Helpful staff.

Review 96:We had the 4 poster bed, and, yes, as another reviewer says, the TV is very small. Bacon at breakfast had great flavour but was not crispy enough.

Review 97:Excellent location, convenient for what we needed. Reasonable room, and very good value. Food OK, breakfast better than dinner. More personal service than you get in the chain hotels, and no more expensive.

Review 98:Fawlty Towers. Initially given the wrong room, then the wrong food and the list of woes continued throughout the night. We will not be staying there again.

Review 99:Not a lot

Review 100:Some of the beds are a little softer than I would like.

Review 101:Staff are very helpful and the hotel has significant individual character; food is good.

Review 102:Breakfast was superb, best ever. Bed was really comfortable. Hotel quaint and pretty Village beautiful

Review 103:That we had to go home!

Review 104:Staff are helpful, food excellent and the location stunning.

Review 105:nice rooms friendly staff excellent beers

Review 106:Good sized rooms and very comforable

Review 107:The room was very dated and there was quite a lot of noise from the road outside.

Review 108:Friendly staff.

Review 109:Room is so uncomfortable. Some left a shirt in the chest drawer which no staff notice. Room too dark.

Review 110:Only bed sheets I can say is clean n fresh.

Review 111:Room was excellent value for money Excellent food - not cheap but quality

Review 112:Lovely quiet country pub - so much better than "plastic" hotels

Review 113:Newly refurbished room was comfy and had character. Breakfast was freshly cooked and was excellent.

Review 114:The ensuite facilities are a bit tired now

Review 115:The staff ere very friendly and helpful. Nice food and atmosphere

Review 116:Despite 2 phone calls they were not prepared to cater for a gluten free breakfast

Review 117:Food, room facilities

Review 118:Nothing.

Review 119:Just like a typical English Inn. Great staff and great food.

Review 120:The staff were very polite, the building is lovely, the room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 121:Erratic cooking (and, on one occasion, service) at breakfast. (Evening meal, though, was good.)

Review 122:Nice helpful staff and good service, also nice to see locals drinking in the bar

Review 123:Restaurant over priced and the food was not good. Venison was as tough as old boot leather

Review 124:Dated furnitur ie cup stains on tables

Review 125:Friendly staff value for money clean.

Review 126:Paid for an extra bed buy didn't get

Review 127:No wifi which is hopeless if you're on business trip

Review 128:location

Review 129:Loved the local pub and friendly atmosphere

Review 130:There was a nasty crack in the wash basin.

Review 131:The food was excellent, as was the beer. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 132:Rooms slopy, carpet throughout looked old and worn, stairs shallow, no food after 9pm.

Review 133:Plenty of parking & location
