Reviews for The Berkeley Square Hotel Bristol
Review 1:Didn't have breakfast at Berkely as very expensive - went to Wetherspoons round the corner!!
Review 2:Excellent location. Lots of nice little touches in room, like free sherry and biscuits. Very comfortable bed
Review 3:Expensive breakfast when only eating cereal and having a pot of tea. Could there not be two prices for continental and cooked?
Review 4:Staff helpful and friendly
Review 5:The room is tiny, basic and dated, felt like a travelodge room so not worth the price. Some broken fittings, and a cramped basic bathroom. also Check in was a fiasco, room not ready when reception said it was - had to wait around traipsing about with lots of baggage and didnt get in til almost 4pm (2 hrs after we started paying for the room)
Review 6:The Property and location are gorgeous, food was good and staff were mostly friendly and helpful
Review 7:There is nothing I didn't like, this trip or the previous.
Review 8:Fun approach to brand e.g. the complimentary items in the room, and how they were labeled. Location couldn't be better! Picture a quiet Georgian square just around the corner from the bustle of the heart of Clifton. Just perfect.
Review 9:The staff were so friendly and helpful. The location is central and quiet. The room was charming with little Christmas gifts to eat and drink, Breakfast fresh and enjoyable.I would return happily and know I would receive a warm welcome.
Review 10:What's not to like, all good
Review 11:Loved this place from the moment we saw the hotel across the square. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The room was cosy and well-equipped with a great view. Particularly liked the little touches, complimentary sherry, coffee, biscuits and fruit. And the bath sheets, yes bath sheets not the skimpy bath towel other hotels provide. We will definitely be staying here again.
Review 12:The room (booked as executive) was well below an acceptable standard. You could not control any of the heating at all, you were told to open the windows in order to cool the room and the heater in the bathroom was dangerously hot, my wife burnt her elbow. Two lights were not safe. TV remote was missing and CD/radio remote had no batteries. Despite writing to the company drawing their attention to these matters, no reply was received.
Review 13:The staff were very friendly
Review 14:No 43 is an awful room. It was run down & so hot (non-adjustable radiator & no thermostat) I had to open the windows, which opened near to the fire escape. So I was kept awake by city noise & I didn't feel secure. If it wasn't so late & I wasn't so exhausted I would have asked to move rooms. They shouldn't have given anyone that room, they MUST have known about this problem. It cost me £80 for 1 night of this. Appalling rip off.
Review 15:Location
Review 16:Reception on the TV was very poor and I cannot put it down to weather conditions as was suggested by Staff!(although they tried to be helpful) So a bad time of year to stay ; a wedding and a party which if I wanted air in my room I had to hear the noise of these !!!!
Review 17:Being able to walk into Bristol or use public transport effectively situated near useful trading outlets
Review 18:Sheet and blanket instead of a duvet. Wake-up call five minutes late.
Review 19:Good fluffy towels. Sherry and fruit provided. Location good for the main University buildings.
Review 20:Reception staff inattentive and bordering on rude. We could not have a drink in the bar on the Saturday night because a function was due to start, so no room for residents. Room was tired and bathroom grubby, heating did not come on until the afternoon of our second stay (this was the weekend of the hurricane and very wet).
Review 21:The best part of our stay was the very good breakfast. Staff at breakfast very obliging.
Review 22:The price they charged me for the breakfast was higher than the offer stated on my booking... Dont bother with it as plenty restaurants and cafes around...The setting of the restaurant is not nice considering the good quality of the food served.. Wooden tables in line resembles a canteen and the wooden chairs can make the long worthy wait unbearable... Another negative is getting a taxi... You might need to wait up to 25 min at peak times for a taxi.... No matter if you book it 3hours in advance.!
Review 23:Staff is nice and helpful... The food in the restaurant is delicious... Centric location, clean and quiet! The staff at the hotel restaurant helpful and lovely
Review 24:I looked in vain for a Gideon Bible having left mine at home to save weight!
Review 25:Very convenient for visit to BGS and meeting granddaughter at the University and lodging nearby. On roads that were very familiar to me 60 to 70 years ago!
Review 26:We were not informed there was a wedding on the day of our stay, either beforehand, or when we checked in, meaning the hotel bar was not available for other guests to use. We would have booked elsewhere if we had known.
Review 27:Amply sized and equipped suite, with lovely monsoon shower.
Review 28:We chose to breakkfast elsewhere as we thought it was a touch expensive. (There is a Wetherspoons around the corner!)
Review 29:The helpfulness of the reception staff both before and at arrival
Review 30:The hotel is tired and in need of an overall refurbishment. The carpets are ready for a change, bedspread grubby but sheets and room clean enough. Very disappointed.
Review 31:There was a wedding party in the hotel, with extra loud music until 3 or 4 am. As the walls are not soundproof, it felt like sleeping above a night club. It's definitely not what I expect from a hotel.
Review 32:Friendly staff and neat rooms
Review 33:Reviews have advised having an upper floor room because of noise from the student drinking area nearby. This was good advice but the top floor suite also appears to be the smallest as it is in eaves of the hotel. Second floor would probably be better!
Review 34:Suite was quirky but lovely. Bedroom a little small but having the additional lounge area made up for it.
Review 35:There is secure parking but once you have paid you are not guaranteed of a parking space as there are only a few available in the garage.
Review 36:Very good position. Within walking distance of lots of attractions. Girls on reception very helpful.
Review 37:No down side. Lovely little hotel.
Review 38:TV and Wi-Fi in room are excellent features. Cafetiere in room is a pleasant change from normal instant coffee. Complimentary sherry in room a nice touch too.
Review 39:Room temperature got chilly at times and I couldn't regulate it from the room.
Review 40:Staff were very friendly. It was close to my daughter's student hostel.
Review 41:Bed linen a bit old and tired. Having to pay extra for wifi. Restaurant had closed early. (I arrived about 9pm)
Review 42:Location. View. Convenience. Breakfast. Staff.
Review 43:Rooms soft furnishings are rather tired. Having to pay extra for wi - fi.
Review 44:Location, staff, and (metered) parking in square, or hotel garage (if there's space) . Comfortable bed, good reading lights and Elemis toiletries.
Review 45:Rooms every so slightly worn, a touch up wouldnt go amiss, still very comfortable though
Review 46:Scenic location next to the park, nice decor in rooms.Staff were very nice and helpful
Review 47:the room was very plain and boring no pictures to make it cheery. we were not able to use the bar as there was a private function and the dining room was very noisy.
Review 48:staff were helpful and polite. the room was clean. the evening meal was delicious.comfortable
Review 49:During the weekends there may be parties in the basement until 01:00 a.m. If you prefer to fall asleep earlier you would be well advised to inform yourself in advance if there are scheduled parties for the date of your sojourn.
Review 50:The staff is friendly and helpful. There are many restaurants in the surroundings.
Review 51:The contemporary and comfortable reception is deceiving. I stayed here for business on a Tuesday night, to feel rested for a busy day ahead, went to the room around 9pm. The noise from adjoining rooms was exceptional, I heard every word of the neighbouring room's phone conversation and every word from his television. Called reception for ears plugs, they said they would check and call me back. They did not. Incredibly unhelpful with no regard for my situation as their guest who paid for the basic requirement of a hotel- a decent nights sleep. Then in the morning with around two hours of sleep maximum, I was woken by the next room turning the shower and television on. So unless your on the same schedule as the next room, there is no chance of sleep. The room, on the third floor, was boiling hot with no control. The old windows opened too wide out onto a ledge and felt too unsafe to be kept open while sleeping. Fixtures in the shower room were coated with crusty lime scale. With no window, the fan was noisy and remained on for too long. No bath mat, had to use a pillow case. The bed spread was stained. This choice of accommodation completely ruined my trip and lost me a productive day during an important work event which I paid almost £100 for. I've never had a worse experience and will avoid this place at all costs. It's near our office and could have been a regular place for the team to stay. No chance, never again.
Review 52:Location, however would rather stay in a less convenient location than stay here ever again.
Review 53:To charge additional fees of 5 pound for One hour late check out . Internet should be free like other hotel
Review 54:Receptionist trying to help as possible as they can
Review 55:Staff member on reception on arrival greeted us with"check-in isn't until 2pm" and we arrived at about 1.45pm. No hello/welcome or similar. Appalled. Messed up over rooms. Decor looking tired. Lift was blocked by towel delivery (lift door held open by shoving towel in lift cage!)one morning so guests had to walk up/down only staircase.
Review 56:Breakfast
Review 57:I checked in on Saturday to be told there was a wedding going on that eve. I explained i wanted quiet and to relax and was told it should not effect me in room 21. It did and was impossible to sleep. Also the bed is so hard and uncomfortable, because of this i would not return to your hotel.
Review 58:Found my room double booked. Up graded but their suits are in a separate building around the corner from main hotel. Not great for a solo traveller.
Review 59:Staff very friendly and helpful
Review 60:The room was shockingly tiny!!!! As was the bath (I'm 6 feet tall). The bathroom felt a little 'tired' & needed a refresh; grouting etc. Also the carpet had seen better days. They nearly charged me for providing the Wifi code until I complained that this hadn't been explained to me, everywhere has free internet access these days, it just breeds negativity to charge.
Review 61:The little touches, I.e. The local bottle of sherry and the label saying drink me & biscuits saying eat me...fab!! Made me smile at the novelty. The lighting was lovely. The bright red headboard & sofa made the room. Mini-bar and TV were fab.
Review 62:bad bathroom lighting. A shame decaffeinated options unavailable for fresh coffee in room
Review 63:perfect location for my social events, accommodating & helpful staff, car parking ease. Free wifi for short durations is the norm and that was a disappointment
Review 64:The hotel was too warm. The heat hits you. Rooms are very small. Shower screen was dirty & did not work. The coverall on the bed was stained. TV remote broken. The radio did not work. Desk chair torn. Carpet worn. Parking in the hotel car park was awful.
Review 65:Staff at reception found speaking English and understanding English difficult.Whilst a sherry was promised this was not provided nor was there any replacement available. The choice of vegetarian meals for dinner was limited.the risotto lacked favour.
Review 66:Roof top view and it was fantastic to have fruit in my room as well as a cafetiere.
Review 67:Older building without air conditioning. I think it could be very hot. We left windows open but quite a bit of noise from restaurant below. (it was a Saturday night)
Review 68:The staff were brilliant. We arrived early in the morning less than 1 hour after booking after a disastrous stay at another hotel the previous night. Our room wasn't ready but the staff were brilliant, organizing our bags, car park, Wifi and a welcoming coffee. Location is brilliant overlooking square and close to everything
Review 69:Staff were friendly and very helpful, always greeted me as I came and went. Breakfast was amazing. Room had everything I needed and was very clean. Had a wonderful stay.
Review 70:Don't be fooled into thinking there is ample parking at this hotel - there isn't. Had to park on the opposite side of the square and get out before 8am to feed the meter. Also paid for a 'superior' double room and requested upper floor - instead given room on ground floor overlooking the kitchen steps. Staff said it would be fine as 'there aren't any parties'. Well that was true but there is a nightclub which stayed open until midnight and after that we were treated to some choice language, by what must have been kitchen staff, for another hour. Not impressed.
Review 71:The shower
Review 72:cleaning: bad coordination, they would come to clean around luch time although i was gone for hours in the morning
Review 73:Excellent location, very elegant building.
Review 74:A great venue - just a few metres from the Art Gallery and the Clifton Triangle. Easy walk into Clifton and the Bridge and the other way down into the city. Hotel has lots of character, great view from our room, and very helpful and friendly staff. Lots of nice touches in the room's facilities. Our 2nd visit and not our last.
Review 75:Suite: impressive intentions, not finished yet (over-sparse furnishing, bare floors, no curtains . . .). Have experienced rooms in main building which are very nice.
Review 76:Convenience of location.
Review 77:Parking not as available as web site suggested. Chairs in bedroom were scruffy. No remote with TV and none available when I phoned Reception.
Review 78:Excellent location, pleasant facilities.
Review 79:For a boutique hotel my room was very tired and the bathroom needs resealing and the sink plughole seriously cleaned
Review 80:The staff were helpful and friendly and gave good ideas of things to do and see
Review 81:Wifi £4 per day or £1 an hour
Review 82:In this day and age do you really need to charge for wifi. Also there is free sherry in the room - I would rather have free wifi!
Review 83:Poor quality hair drier - like a travel hair drier - why? Quite noisy with the windows open - it was hot - from the street. Parking is an issue - although it says parking is available it was always 'full'
Review 84:Good room size - overlooking a park on a lovely square. Quirky individual touches - Bristol cream sherry in decanter , fruit bowl , freshly ground coffee and cafetière - excellent!! Excellent breakfast too!
Review 85:It seems odd that such a fine hotel should charge for Wifi and breakfast (at a very high price too)
Review 86:The location is lovely, ideal for many city activities and full of charm
Review 87:Bed - single - just a bit hard - would have been improved by matress topper and feather pillows.
Review 88:I had stayed before and will stay again. I like the efficient and kind staff and location and set up.
Review 89:This time, whilst offered a room on the square, I was actually in a room overlooking the rear decking, where there was a party on the second night. Worst of all, I was told that, on both evenings, I would have to 'eat out', as the restaurant was fully reserved for large parties!
Review 90:I had stayed here before and had been extremely pleased with a room looking over the lovely square and with the excellence of the meals in the restaurant.
Review 91:Room temperature was surprisingly hot and with the window open at night, it was rather noisy at night (front room facing square)
Review 92:Excellent location. Nearby gym and pool available at small cost. Staff very helpful
Review 93:The room was probably overdue for a good clean. The shower was extremely cramped and parking was unavailable. I was surprised that breafast was not included in the price.
Review 94:The bed was comfortable and the staff were friendly. Didn't drink the sherry but it was a nice touch.
Review 95:Paying extra for the use of wifi Didn't like having to pay so much for parking. Taps slow filling the bath, but we did have rooms on the top floor.
Review 96:Excellent beds, good service, good location complementary items in the room appreciated. The breakfast room was lovely, beautifully set out for guests.
Review 97:The suite was located on the fourth floor of a separate building with no lift. It was not mentioned at the time of booking.
Review 98:Staff sorted out problem efficiently
Review 99:Room was not cleaned 2.day(we stayed 2 nights). Apparently no shampoo in any of the rooms(had run out) Could have used more staff in breakfast area when very busy.
Review 100:Friendly staff at reception. Cosy room with view of Berkeley Square. Small decanter with port and fruit plate in room. Small jug of milk for tea and coffee in minibar. Close to Wills Memorial Building(proximity).
Review 101:The hotel was unbelievably dingy. We could barely see across our room due to the one dim light in the ceiling. My husbands bedside light didnt work and we had no remote for the TV. The decor was shabby ( without the chic) and elsewhere in the hotel, the carpets were stained and everything was worn. Very underwhelming!
Review 102:Good central location
Review 103:No hotel bar for the entire weekend. Complimentary fruit had a mouldy orange! Decor un room a bit shabby
Review 104:Good central location. Much quieter than I thought it might be.
Review 105:The extremely noisy bar underneath our ground floor room made sleeping impossible without ear plugs. Even without this there was a substantial amount of noise from the kitchen and extractor fans outside the room. The hotel was in need of painting inside.
Review 106:The location was excellent for a university visit and the garage facility was useful.
Review 107:Nice to be greeted by fresh fruit and cheerful staff! Appreciated being called and warned in advance that there would be a musical event on that evening. Generally a nice independent hotel and good experience.
Review 108:Charging 4£ per day for Wi-Fi is simply wrong, what makes it even worse is that you are limited to 1gb per day meaning that streaming video is simply not possible. I expect a lot more when paying this price.
Review 109:Breakfast and the friendliness of the staff.
Review 110:Friendliness of staff and the quality of the breakfast. We were put in a new suite which was spacious and very comfortable, though it could do with more hanging space.
Review 111:the room was extremely average, and not at all boutique, i know the hotel is not advertised as such, but we expected more.
Review 112:location is great, reception area is nice as were the staff.
Review 113:The room is a little bit too warm & dim. Deco is a bit outdated. Lighting need improvement. Window is single glazed & sound proof is not very good.
Review 114:Charged us for checking in early despite the room being ready. Put us in a box room next to the bar which had private parties on both nights we were there. Also meant the bar area was rendered out of bounds for guests. We basically paid £98 pn for a bed and a mouldy bowl of fruit
Review 115:I find it slightly too pricy, especially with all the surcharges for parking, internet, breakfast etc.
Review 116:It's located very close to Bristol U -- perfect for me.
Review 117:A lift to the upper rooms would be convenient but in view of building's design may have changed the ambience.
Review 118:The suite was clean and stylish. The lounge area was spacious, well equipped and comfortable.
Review 119:On the day of arrival, I was told to stay at a nearby 2 Star!! sister hotel as my room had 'maintenance issues' I wasn't offered any compensation but instead accidentally charged again and am still awaiting my refund!
Review 120:The hotel building and location. The style of the hotel
Review 121:Needs a little tlc in the rooms, it's a little dated. Shower experience not the best, could do with something new or clever to match the outlook of the hotel.
Review 122:Location and friendly staff. In room food and drink was great, coffee amazing. Nice little touches here and there.
Review 123:Hotel staff were very unhelpful and unaccommodating. We were travelling with our 5 month old baby and I had been in contact the whole week prior to ensure that we had everything we needed for our visit. We were however put in the 2nd noisiest room in the hotel. The hotel staff constantly made excuses and blamed others. They referred to the hotel manager but the manager didn't come to see me. In our room we had a wet dirty towel hanging behind the door from the previous guest. The second night they put is in a "new" studio up the road as they thought it would be better for us. This was unfinished with concrete on the tiles, no skirting board in patches, high ceilings with wooden floors so everything echoed throughout the building and the bed was on wheels so every time we moved we glides across the floor!
Review 124:The hotel was at the wedding venue we attended which was great. We managed to get a car parking space in the hotel car park which was handy.
Review 125:I didn't really have a bad experience but I thought the hotel was shabby especially for the price charged for a small single room
Review 126:Position of hotel. Staff were friendly and bed was very conformable.
Review 127:No free wifi! No room safe! At over £100 a night, IMO these should be standard in this day and age! Had to pay £5 to access my room just over an hour earlier than Check in time of 2 pm even though room available. Ridiculous.
Review 128:I was very happy with my room (no. 22), very nice with a view over the Square. Comfy bed, strong shower, large flat screen TV.
Review 129:we arrived at 14:30 to check in (as was meant to be after 14:00) but our rooms were not ready until 5pm! outside our room in the basement (4) was where the staff came to sit and smoke and chat, right outside the window! reception disorganised and chaotic.
Review 130:location is good and rooms are clean and functional
Review 131:Due to a wedding all hotel facilities were unavailable with no prior warning. They were also withdrawn early the following day 'because it's Sunday' !!! Been waiting a week for the manager to ring to discuss. Customer service very poor
Review 132:The room was too small and the bed small and uncomfortable. The bathroom not that well maintained or clean.
Review 133:People in reception were friendly and helpful
Review 134:I'd paid for an upgraded room 'one of the best' in thehotel. The room was in need of updating - damaged furniture and decor, and the room was rather small. I'd chosen the hotel because of therestaurant and cocktail bar, unable to use either during my stay becauseof a wedding which was disappointing. I would expect to be informed ofthis when booking or in good time before my stay. Had to pay for wifi(free with my room according to their website, but not if you book via a3rd party), the wifi didn't work in our room.
Review 135:Brilliant location. Very friendly staff.
Review 136:Hotel is tired looking and needs repainting. Walls were grubby and windows had peeling paint. In the morning there were still dirty tables in the lounge and one still had a cocktail on it from the night before. Not good! Chair in our room was dirty and did not want to sit in it. Shower dripped constantly. Definitely needs cleaning up
Review 137:Good breakfast. Liked the fruit in the room. Lovy view of leafy square. Very nice staff at breakfast and good choice.
Review 138:Expensive & extra fee for wifi & breakfast Wifi did not work Breakfast was mediocre Noise from staff out the back until late Curtains did not keep out morning light
Review 139:Good bed Good location Spacious room Clean
The Fine Print
Please note that some bedrooms can suffer from noise from the on-site bar and restaurant. This is mostly, but not exclusively at weekends. Please contact the property prior to arrival to request an upper floor room.
