Reviews for Elterwater Hostel
Review 1:Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hostel offered a really good breakfast and evening meal. The showers were really good, and it was a relaxing place to stay.
Review 2:There is no visitors parking in the hostel though there were 3-4 cars (probably the staff) parked at the premesis. The closest National Trust parking in the village is very expensive. There is a free parking but it is quite outside the village and doesn't look asuarinnglly safe. The mobile signal is poor though the wifi is an alternative.
Review 3:The manger Nick was very helpful and friendly! Gave us a very good advice about the walks.
Review 4:The bunk beds were comfortable enough but like many they are short with a barrier at the bottom which make it hard to place feet either above or below it.
Review 5:Situation was perfect for walking options.Hostel was clean and welcoming, warden attentive and also helpful with advice on routes.
Review 6:A welcoming hostel in the most beautiful place on earth.
Review 7:This hostel is a launchpad for the most amazing walks/hikes I've ever taken. Great accommodations and staff as well.
Review 8:You will find it difficult to fault anything here. Absolutely superb. Well done to you all for providing a super place to stay. Stay here and eat as well, faultless......
Review 9:The food, the lovely friendly staff, the atmosphere in the dining/common room, reliving memories of many happy stays here in the last 25 years, the fabulous position, convenient parking very close by.
Review 10:A very pleasent location with friendly hosts. A most excellent enjoyable stay with great facilities. Seriously recommend this to everyone - novice or well seasoned traveller.
Review 11:Travelling via hardknotts pass was frightening, but a thrill too! Wifi struggled but my phone is older than Yoda
Review 12:Beautiful location, cozy village, friendly place
Review 13:Couldn't get in till later in afternoon , Single bunk bed room was very small and claustrophobic with the door closed, fortunately we were able to get a change of rooms, but this would have been a real issue otherwise.
Review 14:Good atmosphere, easy access to all Lakes District sights
Review 15:The lounge is very comfortable. There is a small shop with basic food stuff (like pasta and past sauce) for those who want to cook themselves but haven't had the opportunity to run errands. The people running the hostel are really friendly and helpful.
Review 16:The bed was poor quality. The sheets were good, but the bed itself was cheap thin wood. I was afraid to break it. We arrived at 1 pm but the reception only opened at 5 pm. We had to wait a few hours before we could have a shower and get to our room.
Review 17:Overall a very good experience. Clean rooms, cheap but nice dinner. Very nice and cosy living room to read or browse internet.
Review 18:Friendly staff, great location and magic breakfast. Local hotels and B and B's around £100 more a night. This was more relaxed , better facilities and great company.
Review 19:Great location, everything we needed for a weekend in the lakes. Friendly and helpful staff who even came to the local pub to find us to check if we wanted breakfast in the morning. Good drying room for wet clothes.
Review 20:The duvet. As with most places, it is assumed that one thick duvet will be suitable all year round. For me it was much much much too thick, and I took my own thin cover, and slept inside the duvet cover. Strangely, the hostel had signs asking people not to use their own bedding, despite what was provided being pretty poor as far as I am concerned. But this moan is not targeted specifically at this hostel - it is targeted at many establishments including 4 star hotels. Also the bunk was a bit small for my 6 foot friend, and seemed to have been designed for a child, especially the ladder. Ps there were blankets, so I could have got by, but I would still have had to sleep inside the duvet cover.
Review 21:The staff, the location, the breakfast, the books and magazines.
Review 22:WIFI did not work
Review 23:The staff is super friendly and the location is perfect. The hostel provides breakfast for £5, beers, and other refreshments as well. There is a communal kitchen with everything one needs to make dinner and also they sell some basic food items.
Review 24:Welcoming and friendly staff. Excellent breakfast and very good value. Free tea or coffee and good facilities in the kitchen for cooking your own meals
Review 25:Lack of evening meal - hostel on the 'wind down' but due to it being half term everywhere was fully booked and finding a place to eat out proved to be very difficult. It would have been ideal if the hostel has offered an evening meal...
Review 26:Friendly and helpful staff - gave us advise on walking and eating - even lent a map and map case! Really appreciated.
Review 27:Thank you to Pete and Anthony for making our stay so wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and the help they gave us with maps and routes to suit the conditions was outstanding.
Review 28:Shared a 6 room dorm with 5 strangers. Obvious risk here is that you are at the mercy of the consideration of the others. Unfortunately some were not very. National Trust car park in the village £6.50 per day.
Review 29:Facilities and location outstanding. Especially if you plan to self cater food wise. Did not have breakfast but looked very good value and quality. Lovely relaxing atmosphere and very attentive staff.
Review 30:Nothing
Review 31:Friendly helpful staff. We were lent a bat sensor to take on our evening walk and this meant we got to listen and see several bats which was great. Comfortable beds, lovely new shower cubicles. Breakfast was good . Plenty of stuff in the kitchen to self cater and complimentary tea and coffee. Good value, thank you.
Review 32:Myself and two friends have just returned from an overnight stay at Elterwater Hostel. The purpose of our stay was to do a great walk, get showered and changed, eat something big with chips and have a few ales with the mates. All boxes were ticked! Staff at the hostel were very welcoming, informative and couldn't do enough for you. The place was clean, had great facilities and was in a brilliant location. The Brittannia Inn is 2 mins walk away, which is where we ate that evening, however we said that next time we go we will eat at the hostel. We will definitely be going back in hopefully the not too distant future. Overall great value for money.
Review 33:Staff were excellent and everything was spotless. Bunk beds are narrow but mattresses were very comfortable. Shared washrooms and showers were spotless.
Review 34:Room is quite basic, so if you are planning on staying in the room for long time may not be your best option. For a decent place to sleep and to relax on the living room is great though.
Review 35:Super helpful staff, giving great advice on where to go, lending a map, etc. Really nice building and common living room area. Great and v cheap breakfast. Overall very pleased, great value for money.
Review 36:There is little not to like. Although the rooms are not en suite, the bathrooms & toilets are close by.
Review 37:The hostel has comfort and character. We had a simple double room (£45), self catered for breakfast but had the evening meal - excellent local Cumberland sausage + mash and a pud for less than £10. The Britannia Inn is only 200 yards down the road and all the Langdale walks nearby.
Review 38:We had stayed at Elterwater Hostel a couple of years ago, and in our view it has improved under the recent management. We felt that the staff were very helpful and co-operative.
Review 39:its all perfect for the amount of money charged.
Review 40:* We (5 guys) by mistake booked female dormitories which we realized after reaching Elterwater hostel, but staff was very helpful and accommodated us in some other room by talking with other people already staying. * nice kitchen you can what ever you want and enjoy your food, without paying much
Review 41:It was all really great; the kitchen and dining areas were great; spacious and clean but the bedrooms could do with a little refurbishment
Review 42:The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, who spent a lot of time giving us detailed walking instructions as well as loaning maps and compasses. The hostel itself is situated in a very peaceful and beautiful area within the lake district very close to two lovely local pubs (delicious food) & there is a convenience store about a 5 minute walk away. The views are outstanding too. We very much enjoyed our stay.
Review 43:No laundry facilities
Review 44:Bike storage Location Staff Internet Bar Cooking facilities Showers 200m Walk to the pub, cafe, busstop Breakfast Free tea & coffee
Review 45:Loved it all.
Review 46:Our family loved our stay at this hostel. Bring food and cook in their amazing kitchen or eat what they prepare. Kids loved the selection of books and games. Excellent find. They even sell wine.
Review 47:We stayed here for accommodation during the coast-to-coast as we understood the hostel is very close to grasmere - however due to local taxi firms refusing to travel on the shorter road (not much more than 2 miles) we ended up paying £20 (reduced from £25!) to travel the distance from Grasmere to Elterwater. On arrival at the hostel the woman in charge said this sounded correct/fair, and had little sympathy for the downer this put on our stay. Travelling back to Grasmere we used a couple of buses which came to £16 for 2 people - the hostel should really state that in practice they're very much out the way from Grasmere/the coast to coast walk for people doing this - the extra distance is a time and cost issue which meant we could have stayed somewhere far nicer in Grasmere itself when factoring in the travel costs. The hostel itself was quite stingy with little things like alcohol (not allowed to consume your own on premises!) and they charge an extra £1 for using one of their towels. This sort of thriftyness leaves a bad taste in the mouth so we left without any packed lunch or breakfast. Finally, the hostel charged us in full for our booking before we even arrived, which they're not meant to do with booking.com
Review 48:Great location if that's what you're after and the standard hostel price for the area.
Review 49:Hostel is in a small and remote village, so is most suitable for people who are happy to take walks or cycle (e.g. 4 miles) to all destinations.
Review 50:Staff were friendly and helpful in every way, communal kitchen area is large with multiple facilities, hostel even offers full breakfast and evening meals if required. Highly recommended.
Review 51:it was a bit noisy in the lounge when the door to reception was open. Could hear the staff talking admin which wasn't ideal when trying to relax and read a book. maybe just keep this door shut in future but it was propped open while I was there.
Review 52:it felt more like staying in a B&B or large guest house. very homely and welcoming. Not impersonal.
