Reviews for Eltermere Inn

Review 1:The Location is idyllic, in a quiet spot but within easy reach of the more popular parts of the Lake District. The staff are really nice nothing is too much problem. The real fire in the bar area is on all the time.

Review 2:Not the hotels fault but aren't onion rings in batter old hat! Also chunky chips could have been better. The steak was okay.

Review 3:Nice areas to sit and relax after a walk or to have a drink in the evening with a log burner.

Review 4:Felt our room was quite small, and could have done with more clothes hanging facilities (hooks, etc).

Review 5:A beautiful hotel, in a beautiful location. Safe, warm and inviting.

Review 6:Our bedroom (standard) didn't have a sink in the en-suite but in the bedroom instead with the only mirror over the sink. There was no light above the mirror so very difficult to see. No hooks in the bathrrom so you had to put towels and your clothes on the floor. Quite cold in the dining room.

Review 7:Beautiful views in all directions and not far from a few amenities. The food is excellent.

Review 8:If I had to stay anything the bed was a little hard and couldn't get the wi-fi working at all.

Review 9:We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant and enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Review 10:We loved the Inn! It is comfortable, warm and inviting. It is also an extraordinary location that's at the epicenter of some incredible walking/hiking routes.

Review 11:My partner was somewhat frustrated by the poor W Fi . service when trying to contact family from the Hotel. Otherwise a very pleasant stay.

Review 12:Quiet,scenic location, delightful menus and friendly informal atmosphere

Review 13:Bathroom a little on the small side.

Review 14:Scenic and peaceful location. Lovely food and very comfortable bed. Staff friendly and knowledgeable about the area.

Review 15:Hotel set in great location the inside of the building is charming. The food is great , I can recommend the cream tea ! The staff were attentive and helped make the stay relaxing nothing was too much trouble .

Review 16:The Wi-Fi only worked in the Main Building but this did not detract from our stay

Review 17:I was celebrating a big birthday and after staying here previously it was easy to book my break with family here. We were not disappointed as the welcome, food, bedrooms and hospitality were again first class. Finally the tranquillity and the location makes this a first class venue to visit this area of the lakes As usual th

Review 18:This was a surprise trip organised by my partner to celebrate my birthday; it was made known to the hotel at the time of the booking, a bouquet and balloon were arranged too. On my birthday, my partner and I, booked the table by the fire (table no 1) from 8:30pm; a note of this had been made by one of the staff members in their booking log. When we arrived in the bar at around 8:15pm, ready for a celebratory dinner by the fire (after a rainy day spent on the mountains), one of the waiters was setting a couple of "local regulars" at our table; we were told by the person that we made the booking with that a different table was set for us in the same room! This did not go down well and when I went to the restaurant supervisor, Evie, to find out why our previously booked table had been given away, she claimed first that bookings could not be made for that room (although we had made one that was written down hours before), then that those people were regulars, then that she did not know about my birthday, and in a most despicable way, when I said that she made the wrong decision that spoiled my birthday and was ready to leave she started walking behind me arguing... It is an absolute shame that such beautiful venue in beautiful surroundings hires staff that have no ethics (since they repeatedly lie in one's face!) and spoil the guests special days; they should at least be trained in basic people skills or demoted to non people facing roles! An absolute disgrace!

Review 19:Nice location overlooking the valley; the room was fantastic, beautifully decorated, with free standing bath

Review 20:the wi-fi was poor only really available in main area of hotel could be seen as a benefit

Review 21:The tranquiity and excellent views. The exceptional food including the breakfast.the relaxing atmosphere of area, the choice of walks and the friendliness of the owners and staff

Review 22:The breakfast experience could do with a bit of attention. They make a point of saying "and black pudding of course", but you get half a slice. The next day I asked for two slices - and got 1 slice. The next day I asked for poached egg sausage and beans, and got a small poached egg, a single small sausage, and a tablespoon of lukewarm beans. Not enough to set anyone up for a day in the mountains!

Review 23:Staff are great and the location is very good - though a little isolated (only one bus every 1h30m). Food is very good, if a bit pricey

Review 24:Uncomfortable bed, one or two staff members lacked a smile, value for money of main menu & quality.

Review 25:Location & peacefull, cleanliness, gardens & view.

Review 26:Noticed a very 'musty' smell in the bedroom as soon as weentered. No mention was made of this to us. Reason - a faultyshower/bath open plan to the bedroom which was to be solvedafter our stay.

Review 27:The location is excellent, garden lovely for afternoon tea (weatherpermitting!) and the hotel comfortable. Staff efficient & courteous.

Review 28:Stone Arthur room listed as superior plus room with a 'glorious view of Elterwater' however we would not agree with this as the small windows of the room were overlooked by the dining room which was slightly above and directly opposite so we could not open the curtains as people could see in! (we had phoned before we booked to ask for advice on the view from the rooms!) Photo of bathroom did not match hotel website! When we sat in garden for a drink enjoying the view could smell septic tank - would expect more for a hotel of this calibre.

Review 29:We would recommend the food as both breakfast and evening meals we fab and we enjoyed it so much we went back another night evening. Staff were really excellent, the hotel clean and very well presented in lovely surroundings.

Review 30:Very small bathroom with hand basin in the bedroom, not really a problem though, just a bit odd. A coat of paint would bring it right up to scratch, but again just a small observation.l

Review 31:The location and the view from our window was superb.

Review 32:The menu for lunch/dinner did seem to be on the expensive side; although the food was very tasty. The wifi was poor in the room.

Review 33:I loved the peaceful location; you can really hear yourself think! The room was excellent and it was lovely to have nice views. You don't feel like you're in a goldfish bowl! The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere in the dining area was relaxed and pleasant. I particularly liked the quirky decor.

Review 34:No problems of any kind

Review 35:Good welcome and personal service. Lovely spacious and well equipped room even though we had chosen the basic one for a one night stay. Good evening menu. Good breakfast.

Review 36:Our room was at the top of the house up 5 flights of stairs did not mention this on the website. Staff could be a little more cheerful and helpful. Reception for TV and Wi-Fi very poor. Newspapers available to purchase would be good.

Review 37:Outlook over surrounding countryside. Car parking easy. Handy for Ambleside/Hawkshead.

Review 38:Hard to criticise but perhaps attention to some details required. House keeping - nice reed diffuser in the room but no oil in it. Design - odd set up in our bathroom with the shaving mirror not over the washbasin so dripped on the carpet.

Review 39:Fabulous setting, decor, food and staff. Relatively recently opened and trying very hard, with a large measure of success. Offering something different to the traditional Lake District hotel, but still very tasteful and relaxing.

Review 40:We needed to make arrangements to meet family and it proved tricky with the signal, but that is beyond the control of the owner and normally wouldn't be an issue....escaping from devices is good!

Review 41:The relaxed ambience, quality of decor, home from home. The Bircher muesli was excellent and it is my own personal 'test' of quality in a hotel!

Review 42:The hotel is gorgeous! Set in a tiny picturesque village at the foot of some hills and near a stream. They have invested a lot of money in everything from the living room area, to the bar with a fireplace, to the bedrooms and the menu which is excellent. Can't recommend it enough.

Review 43:No management or owners on hand to meet and greet, or to complain to.

Review 44:The position of the property is good and the cleanliness could not be faulted.

Review 45:Evening meals good but not outstanding

Review 46:Idyllic location, away from the hustle and bustle of the village but easy walking distance. Helpful, pleasant staff.

Review 47:My only complaint was that the bed, though comfortable, was too big for the room meaning that I had to get in and out of it at the bottom rather than the side which became very irritating.

Review 48:The location was wonderful and the hotel was clean, friendly and comfortable. Enjoyed all the meals we had and service excellent.

Review 49:Nothing major - would have liked size of breakfast to match size of evening meal.

Review 50:Sizeable room in the loft. Tasty filling food. Lovely bar area. Handy for easy or harder walks. Reasonably priced for what you get (4* standard). Complimentary cake and tea on arrival. Friendly service. Great setting.

Review 51:Scent sticks in the bedroom were a bit overpowering, so they stayed in a cupboard on the landing!

Review 52:Breakfast, just brilliant! All food was first class, the room was just what we wanted and our two-nights/three days exactly what we hoped.

Review 53:Slightly weird set up in our room with the "open plan" bath. The food is a good average but not stellar. Over fancy and heavy going when good solid basic food would have been just fine. Nearly right but not quite.

Review 54:This is a great location and a beautiful house. Set in its own small grounds with outside dining facilities if you get the weather ( we didn't ). The public rooms are well furnished and we spent a quiet afternoon on comfy sofas reading the paper and drinking wine. Not a bad occupation at all !

Review 55:For us, the bed was a little too hard!

Review 56:It is almost impossible to find anything negative to say about Eltermere Inn. From our arrival to our departure (3 days) we enjoyed warm hospitality, fabulous food and the idyllic setting. We will be back!!

Review 57:Not much to dislike! Lack of private bathroom areas in the room may be an issue in the room we had.

Review 58:Friendly efficient staff Interesting and tasteful surroundings Access to beautiful countryside and walking

Review 59:Not all rooms have good views not reflected in the price of rooms. Evening meal was expensive. Some of the staff had dead pan faces and made no effort to smile while serving us. No heat in bathroom so cold after a shower. Breakfast was nothing special no croissants only toast offered.

Review 60:Location was very picturesque. Nice bar area with real fire.

Review 61:We booked through booking.com. as it was advertised as 20% off, as it was a late deal. We thought we were paying £108 instead on £140 a night, however when we came to pay breakfast was then added on at £30, so the deal was a 1% saving of £2 based on the price. Initially booked B and B but then later print out sent with no food in small print.

Review 62:Staff were helpful, although very busy when we arrived. Room amazing views across the valley and spacious. Food good, although did not get food till after nine on both evenings.

Review 63:Nothing.

Review 64:Everything about the accommodation was fantastic. Probably will go again for a few days in the spring. It was so relaxing for both of us. An excellent starting point for lots of fell walking.

Review 65:Could not stay for a couple more evenings!

Review 66:Our hosts Ruth & Mark The food was delicious Room was clean and comfortable Staff very helpful without being intrusive

Review 67:Could do with a high chair, although babies are welcome

Review 68:Great location in tranquil spot at the heart of the lakes. Great bar and dining area with log fire and real ale. Great food with interesting specials. Relaxing and run by friendly family.

Review 69:I thought the bedroom and bathroom for what was called a superior room was rather small.

Review 70:the location, the building was very nice, staff were friendly on arrival.

Review 71:The room Hen Crag, smelt very musty and damp my clothes even smelt of it when I left. The smallest en suite I have every had. Not impressed with wash basin in bedroom. Although this was a standard double the price was not cheap and I expected a lot better, I have paid less for rooms and had better. All in all verydisappointed

Review 72:The area and surroundings. The staff where polite & friendly Nice breakfast

Review 73:Room was not a "view" room despite claim that all rooms had views. Otherwise and even so, no complaints or "negatives"

Review 74:Perfect location for walking and sightseeing. Really great kitchen and menus Friendly staff Particularly liked the outdoor relaxation area. Quiet!!

Review 75:Shower not much power. Evening bar meals though tasty were a little expensive.

Review 76:Coffee & cake on arrival a nice touch. Rooms very clean & comfortable. Breakfast lovely.

Review 77:The setting and Hotel are fabulous, the rooms are spacious and well decorated. the staff are very friendly and look after your every need. I cant fault the hotel.

Review 78:Beautifully maintained and located small hotel, friendly and attentive staff, peaceful location with lovely views over gardens, trees and lake, excellent food, a good night's sleep

Review 79:Our room had no shower. Given that it was priced as a "Superior Plus" room, this was very disappointing.

Review 80:The food is top notch and it would be difficult to find a better location. The Georgian house retains all its charm. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Review 81:Poor parking. No telephone in bedroom. Old beams my husband is tall and hit his head getting up inthe night. Rooms are difficult toget to for older folk

Review 82:Offered breakfast after finishing time. A real unusual bonus much appreciated.

Review 83:Nothing

Review 84:Pulling into the Eltermere Inn we were met with a wonderful view of gardens and surrounding scenery. We have been to many beautiful locations in the world and I would rate this as one of our top 5 experiences. The staff were lovely and the food and service were fantastic. We had a very relaxing time, just what we needed to recharge our batteries.

Review 85:Staff were very efficient and helpful but could have been a little more relaxed/friendly towards guests at times. Slightly noisy in our room until about 11.30pm as we were above the kitchen and bar but nothing excessive.

Review 86:Stunning location and beautiful building/rooms. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely.

Review 87:Limited bar menu Kids in the bar till late Rigid check out time - asked for 30 mins leeway after giving a decent tip but...no.

Review 88:Room, location, bar atmosphere, good wine list

Review 89:If you love rural you will love this hotel with great walks on your doorstep you won't be using the car.Its very clean, sophisticated with light airy rooms. The staff are great and friendly and the food is fantastic though a bit pricey, you get what you pay and you won't be disappointed

Review 90:We only stayed one night, it should have been more!

Review 91:We loved everything about the Eltermere - it was far enough from the tourists but near enough to be readily accessible by car or train. Beautiful setting with it's own lake, wonderful tiered garden and efficient and friendly staff. Fantastic food either in the bar (informal, big oak tables, candlelight, perfect for couples or groups of friends) or in the restaurant (more formal but still relaxed, great views, lots of space) & a lovely gin menu! Breakfast served up until 10am in the restaurant but thereafter still available in the bar for anyone who detests B&B early breakfast rules! There are plenty of walks starting from the hotel, from a few miles to all day, picnic lunches happily supplied on request.

Review 92:We went out on our first night, but on returning just after 11pm, we couldn't get to our room, Cockly Moss, as the door through the bar and the hallway was locked. After trying various other doors, ringing the owners using the phone on reception - which didn't connect - we had to walk through the 2 connecting dining rooms in total darkness, using our phone for a light. The following morning we spoke to the owner about this, who said we must let them know if we are returning late? This we did the next day-just in case we were late, and they left the side door open. All we needed is a key to the side door instead of the front door. This is not what you would expect to happen. Also we booked 2 nights through booking.com so we could cancel if needed. We also e mailed the Eltemere Inn to ask about the different rooms available. They replied, and also told us they had an offer on, that if we booked 3 nights midweek we could have a free evening meal and a picnic lunch. So I changed the 2 nights to 3 on booking.com. On arrival we checked the offer, and was first told because we booked through booking.com we were not entitled to the offer, but then the receptionist said she would check, and we are both sure she said that's OK. On our final night we ate in the bar, and asked to pay for our drinks, but was told we could pay in the morning. On checking out we were billed for the meal. We queried this, and was told in no uncertain terms by the owner that they could not give free meals as they would be out of business. We paid and left and will never return. On returning home, I sent the e mail we had been originally sent, directly from them, explaining politely about the confusion, as it had been offered to us directly from the owner with no mention about who to book through.

Review 93:We have stayed here a number of times, and enjoy the location, and the friendliness and good food at the nearby Britannia Inn. We have seen how the decoration and furnishings have improved.

Review 94:When we visited, all staff were foreign - pleasant, but we expected a more personal, local touch. Maybe we expect too much.

Review 95:Wonderful, peaceful location with no noise, beautiful hotel, modern decor with wonderful old pieces of furniture, village in easy walking distance.

Review 96:Very difficult to regard anything we didn't like - probably there could have been a greater selection of biscuits and more milk in the bedrooms.

Review 97:Magnificent location with views looking over towards Elterwater & Loughrigg; Decorative, comfortable bedroom; Stunning views; Hearty Lakeland breakfast; Attentive, warm and friendly staff; and Tranquil, peaceful location.

Review 98:The staff are rude, unhelpful and seen as we were charged double and more initially, having finally admitted they were at fault made no apology or provided even the smallest of compensation. For £135 a night, not even a smile, a welcome, a helping hand or much needed taxi phone call was provided. I suggest people stay at the Rum Doodle as they go beyond themselves to make your stay magical, where as the Eltermere Inn just dampens your mood and makes your stay just downright stale.

Review 99:The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and the hotel is presented immaculately.

Review 100:The shower was good and hot but really lacked some pressure.

Review 101:The Food was amazing and a great choice for all tastes, the room was really nice and very clean. The location is really quiet and with gorgeous views.

Review 102:It's our favourite little Lake District retreat. Amazing rooms and beautiful food.

Review 103:Beautiful setting for a beautiful hotel, we loved it. Food was great and staff were lovely. We will definitely come again.

Review 104:Room was a wee bit dark

Review 105:Food was fantastic! A bit more expensive but worth it.

Review 106:Temporary excavations to river in foreground. Weak wifi.

Review 107:Friendly welcoming staff. High standard of food in restaurant.

Review 108:We enjoy short breaks at typical country house hotels. The Eltermere fulfilled our expectations admirably.

Review 109:relaxed atmosphere, location, made to feel welcome

Review 110:Great location for walking and very friendly staff. Good breakfast and room very comfortable.

Review 111:Bed too hard in room we had - I suffer with my back

Review 112:Beautiful setting - lovely place

Review 113:Location was amazing, and Ben the hotel manager was very attentive.

Review 114:Great location. Friendly staff. Good food.

Review 115:Just the wonderful ambience & the beautiful surrounding countryside

Review 116:Wi-fi connection not reliable. Room needed lighting above only mirror and full length mirror

Review 117:Views, location and superb food

Review 119:The food at the hotel was stunning we ate both nights there. The decor was simply beautiful.

Review 120:Peaceful location, relaxed ambience

Review 121:The wifi reception was terrible

Review 122:Would prefer porridge to be available at breakfast. Waited 45 mins at the bar for a table despite booking a specific time.

Review 123:Good room. Modern shower.

Review 124:Very comfortable stay in a lovely room with beautiful views. Excellent meals and very friendly staff.

Review 125:Lovely Fresh cooked breakfast Ease of access to walking

Review 126:The bath in the bedroom with no door

Review 127:The food! Breakfast is really lovely and if you choose to have lunch or evening meals they are very delicious !

Review 128:The old building meant that we were kept awake by noisy plumbing and very creaky floors above

Review 129:beautiful location. Lovely friendly staff.Delicious food
