The Chainbridge is sited in a unique spot between the spectacular Dee River, with it's racing white water and leaping salmon, and the Llangollen canal.
The Chainbridge Hotel, is in one of the most picturesque places in Wales, in a valley of serene and natural beauty shielded by the Berwyn and Eglwysig mountains.
Situated on the banks of the Dee River, about a 3 minute walk away are the Horseshoe Falls, the source of the famous Thomas Telford Shropshire Union Canal, which also runs alongside the Hotel. Across the river, steam trains pass every hour.
The Restaurant offers romantic and magnificent panoramic views of the river. The Tudor Bar is situated in the original building and has black and white beams, with its Inglenook fireplace where you can also sit and watch the fishermen fish the river.

Reviews for Chainbridge Hotel

Review 1:The property is in desperate need off renovation. Our room had an awful damp smell and the side panel on the bath was hanging off. On mentioning to the staff we were told 'the previous occupants of the room must have done it" our reaction surely housekeeping should have done something when cleaning the room prior to our occupancy

Review 2:The location was wonderful

Review 3:Not a bad experience but thought the room over priced, on the small side, a little tired, needs seats & perhaps pictures. But very clean & tidy.

Review 4:Stunning view's, very good b/fast, food generally good, staff excellent, well done Sue,Shawn,John & the gang. Hotel side very comfortable & relaxing would stay again,

Review 5:The room was a little noisey, from other guests, the bathroom door rubbed on the floor which not only was a problem to close but also made quite a noise when try to close

Review 6:The location , and the food was really good.

Review 7:The hotel location is excellent. Park your car and then forget about it until you are ready to leave. Llangollen is a 20 mins walk away, out of your back door is the Horseshoe Falls and Velvet Hill walk, and out front the magnificent bridge across the river to the restored railway station. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly.

Review 8:Beds not made, did complain but not much joy there. No shelves in bedroom or bathroom and very dated ONE ELECTRIC PLUG in the bedroom I ask you'''''''''&#- 39;'

Review 9:THE POSITION OF THE HOTEL

Review 10:The only negative was that the room was very hot but this was solved by keeping the patio door open.

Review 11:The hotel was clean and very comfortable. The situation of the hotel was superb - having the river on one side and the canal on the other. It was a peaceful place and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was very good too. It was refreshing to find the lighting relaxing - unlike the glaring over-bright spotlights that many hotels now have. We will definitely stay for longer next time. Elaine and John

Review 12:We enjoyed the whole ambiance of this hotel. We were lucky enough to have a balcony overlooking the river. All the staff were helpful and friendly and the food was excellent. There was Wifi but only in reception areas - and limited TV stations - but we were on a short break so this was not a problem.

Review 13:Bedrooms could do with a little more upkeep. Ours had chipped bath, cracked sink, loose shelf, all reported to reception for repair hopefully for next guest. Housekeeping failed to replace shampoo ,soaps ect had to be asked.!

Review 14:Hotel location ideal for touring North Wales.

Review 15:I must say I would not hesitate to book again, but please realize that this is an old facility, not a five star hotel.

Review 16:Unique location right beside a beautiful running stream, the setting is marvelous, the hotel is between the river and a canal, both lush with plants and trees. The 'chain bridge' stretches across the river from the hotel to a steam engine train stop. Walking paths along the river are so picturesque! The staff are very friendly. Deck from our room overlooking the stream as was the dining and sitting rooms. Flowers abound!

Review 17:Basic Double room was poor value for money. Bed was hard and uncomfortable. In need of serious upgrade but loved the balcony facing the river. Soundproof windows worked well for the river noise but very hot room even though weather was quite mild.

Review 18:Location by the river and in amongst the forest setting. The eating/dining areas had a lovely outlook. Staff were friendly and helpful. Restaurant meals and breakfast were excellent!

Review 19:Our fourth visit to the Chainbridge. Very pleased that the actual bridge has been restored - easier access to the station, etc. The room was excellent, with the usual superb view over the river from the balcony.

Review 20:For £90 B&B we expect a room with WiFi, a reading lamp on both sides of the bed, and without a gaping hole in the bath facia. A folder with things like menues, local places of interest etc would might be expected too. Seiously overpriced now I'm afraid, which is a great pity.

Review 21:Most recent of several visits over the last five years. Fabulous situation, pleasant and helpful staff, good value evening food and good breakfast.

Review 22:What an amazing setting for a Hotel, just beautiful. Friendly, helpful staff, good meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay, so many things to see and do nearby. Hard to leave here.

Review 23:Style of decor a bit naff and muddled throughout. Shower needed repair but they said it would be repaired that day as the plumber was coming. Wi-Fi only worked in the reception area.

Review 24:Beautiful setting by the river. Roaring of the water was not a distraction. Slept very well.

Review 25:The beautiful river . The views from the balcony.Llangollen Eisteddfod was within walking distance along the canal. The staff were very helpful and friendly.T

Review 26:No bad experience but parking proved difficult. Wifi would be nice in our units & balconies. Worked well near reception though.

Review 27:Loved the views from our room, dining, lounge etc. so relaxing watching & listening to the water. My husband enjoyed the steam & heritage trains passing. Amazing two nights stay.

Review 28:Hotel decor was lovely tasteful not modern lovingly cared for very clean view was amazing could watch the river and the steam trains from our balcony staff friendly food fantastic well worth the money and would definately stay again

Review 29:Did not like having to leave!

Review 30:Apart from the superb views which I could talk about non stop, the hotel overall was great. The food was superb, the service was friendly and always polite, the rooms were very clean and comfortable as were the relaxing lounges in the hotel. The actuall location was fantastic.

Review 31:Evening meal was poor, philosophy seemed to be " get it on the table as quickly as possible " rather than a leisurely dining.

Review 32:Quiet Location but convenient for Llangollen.

Review 33:The Chainbridge staff are always very helpful and pleasant, and the location is simply superb, right by the side of the River Dee. And the chef took a good deal of care with my wife's dietary requirements. Excellent all-round!

Review 34:Needs wifi in the rooms and more TV channels that have a better reception. Breakfast was just OK, the buffet could be a little more extensive.

Review 35:Great spot to relax and watch the river and trains go by. Friendly staff and good to see money being invested in the hotel and the chain bridge itself.

Review 36:What a wonderful little hotel! An unbelievably beautiful location, with lots to do close by. Room was cosy with great views up and down the river from its balcony. Food was great, staff were friendly and helpful. If you love your mobile then be prepared! There is very little, if any signal in or around the hotel, which came as a blessed relief after a tough week in work.

Review 37:Could have done with better, bigger bath towels. Would have appreciated hair dryer in room.

Review 38:The friendly, helpful staff. Warm rooms with extremely comfortable beds. Lovely food.

Review 39:The restaurant was very cold and there was no fire lit in the lounge during our stay for 3 cold days in December. We had expected a warm, welcoming and comfortable hotel but it was cold and uncomfortable. Also the chain bridge which is supposed to be an attraction is nothing but scaffolding. I think the lack of a fire and lack of a chain bridge should be made clear at the time of booking.

Review 40:Heating was always on was only negative. Having to return home :-(

Review 41:Polite staff Warm welcome quiet location superb views balcony room fantastic food A1 all round

Review 42:The shower head in room 37 needs sorting out. Other wise, no problems!

Review 43:The staff are amazing. Stayed in November. The room was so warm we had to open the doors and windows. Fantastic views over the River Dee. Under new ownership and the new owner has done some wonderful work. The original Chainbridge is being restored. This will be a must see Hotel for years to come. Well done to the new owner and the local council who have gained Heritage Lottery funding to restore the Chainbridge to it's former glory. I thank you all.

Review 44:Standard of food not very good, my starter of mushroom brushstrokes was 3 bits poo f very hard stale bread with a few mushrooms in top, my main was, supposed to be,chicken with a gorgonzola sauce, it was awful it was,a lump of very dry chicken served with a white tasteless cream sauce and shrivelled veg. The only redeeming feature was the cheesecake desert. Very poor value. C

Review 45:Location was fab, we stayed in a riverside room and the views were spectacular. Room had good size balcony although room itself was a bit on small size. Staff were friendly especially Ryan who worked in dining room.

Review 46:It needs to play a little music. I didn't want to leave.

Review 47:The beautiful hotel is situated in a lovely scenic spot in Wales. Things to recommend are the location, staff, friendly atmosphere, fantastic food. You need to visit to see for yourself.

Review 48:I really like the atmosphere here, you feel right at home and welcome. The food was very good and the view from the restaurant is stunning. I will be back.

Review 49:A very nice hotel in a lovely setting, staff are very friendly. Lots of nice areas to just chill out. The rooms with balcony's offer great views over the River Dee, Great food and a very nice bar. I can highly recommend this hotel.

Review 50:No wifi and itv tv sound didn't work!

Review 51:Staff were excellent the room with one of the best views I have ever seen! Outstanding food, will defiantly be visiting again. Highly recommended

Review 52:Great location chosen from website very impressed with thepublic areas very clean and tastful décor staff were very pleasant and helpful nothing too much trouble would definetly return in future

Review 53:* The room was too hot despite radiator and towel rail switched off. * Very noisy waterfall so unable to cool room with window open. Bought ear plugs in Llangollen then window could be left open.

Review 54:* Beautiful location with pleasant staff . * Breakfast excellent.

Review 55:Small bedroom area. We are used to a king-sized bed and I tend to be rather restless, so my wife suffered a bit!

Review 56:Gideon Bible in the room. Location facing Berwyn Station from balcony bedroom. Lovely dining area and several small lounges made the place feel homely. En suite in perfect condition. Ample covered balcony.

Review 57:Hot water scalding hot No internet other than in reception No phone signal at all TV channels a problem all week

Review 58:Food Bedroom Views Friendly staff

Review 59:Bedroom scruffy - bathroom modernised but not thought out properly.Shelf overhangs too small a sink. Tap loose. Two lights faulty in room.Lovely restaurant but ambiance missing scruffy menus and tabledecoration.

Review 60:Location and common areas

Review 61:1. Outdated interior 2. Creaky floorboards 3. Squeaky bed 4. Small & tight bathroom 5. Staff and management knew it was our peal 30th anniversary but there was no consideration or "the extra mile" taken to mark a special day for us. We will not be recommending this hotel to a couple who want to cherish their memories. Hey...couples out there go to Guoman Hotel instead by Towerbridge London!

Review 62:Location Food Pleasant Staff Wrexham Beer

Review 63:The ensuite bathroom is disappointing comparing to the room: very small, lighting is poor and no towel rails. The restaurant was a real disappointment, considering prices and the potential of the structure: the food was very plain, almost mediocre. Cleanliness is not their forte: the windows and curtains were dirty (which is a real pity considering that the river view should be the diamond point of the restaurant). Furnishing and decor very worn out and dusty, both in the restaurant and in the common spaces (corridors, etc.). A room on the riverbank is dreamy, but a stronger sound-proofing would improve the sleep quality.

Review 64:The hotel & restaurant staff is very welcoming and kind. The building is in a wonderful position, neatly placed in the green between the river and the canal. The room was very large and sufficiently clean. The restaurant has a stunning view on the river, especially in the morning.

Review 65:Been here 5 times over the past 2 years. A lot of work and money had been put into this hotel. Improvements are of a very high standard and in keeping with the original features.

Review 66:A couple of plumbing issues, but nothing drastic.

Review 67:What could be better than looking across the river valley to the historic steam train pulling up at the picturesque station and the white-water rafters manoeuvring the rapids all from our own huge balcony? Then we stepped outside to see the horse-drawn canal boat on the canal right at the rear of the hotel. Amazing! Dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant was tasty and very nicely presented. Loved the wood panelling. The staff were always polite and pleasant and helpful with directions and sightseeing ideas. We loved the place - we were there for four nights- and would certainly recommend it.

Review 68:The hotel is obviously still in the process of upgrading, this shows in little things like the shower head broken in the bedroom. Given time I,m sure this hotel will be a superb venue.

Review 69:Location, location is everything, Sitting in the restaurant beside the River Dee, walking along the Canal, sitting behind a horsedrawn canal boat. Magic.

Review 70:The hotel has (and is) undergoing refurbishment work. There were a few matters relating to the bedroom and bathroom which we reported to the staff.

Review 71:Location of the hotel. Balcony overlooking the river. Friendly staff. Excellent quality of food.

Review 72:- Billing inaccurate and took 20 mins to sort out, then nothing but explanations about how their system went wrong- restaurant staff pleasant but not skilled

Review 73:- Location by gorge and canal- location near Llangollen - one room had fabulous balcony overlooking river - decent food & wine offer - interesting building

Review 74:Leaving!

Review 75:This was a short break to celebrate mum's 85th birthday. Family members came from various locations and received a warm welcome. The rooms were very clean and well equipped. The view of the river from the window was stunning and it was lovely to sit on the balcony over-looking the station and the steam trains. Breakfast was scrumptious. Evening meals were delicious with plenty of choice to cater for all tastes. I love watching the fish swim in the canal. Great place to stay for exploring the passes, mountains, Welsh towns, rivers and coast.

Review 76:Leaving after only 1 night, will stay for longer next time.

Review 77:Wonderful to sit on the balcony over the gushing river below, beautiful dramatic scenery, very helpful staff and lovely clean room.

Review 78:Present state of footbridge. A few minor light issues with the bedroom

Review 79:Good value for money considering the beautiful location.Delighted to hear that the river footbridge is to be renovated with Lottery money support

Review 80:A little hard to find, but well worth a visit.

Review 81:Setting was unique nestled between the river Dee and the canal. Rooms clean, bed comfy and views magnificent. Evening meal one of the best we have experienced at any hotel, we had lamb shank, mmmmmm. Breakfast cooked to order really good, piping hot. Waitresses very efficient and friendly.

Review 82:Hotel looks a bit 'tired' - dated carpets, etc. Had one evening meal but would not rate as brilliant (and found better food and value in bistro in town) I had Sunday roast, and it seemed to be re-heated from lunchtime?

Review 83:Friendly helpful staff Good facilities Comfy bed

Review 84:Food so-so. Room not complete (bedside cupboard missing, no shelves in bathroom). Being locked in until receiption opened.

Review 85:Location, general cleanliness and facilities. Bar prices. Outside seating overlooking the river. Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 86:There were parts of the hotel that were in need of some TLC, just the odd minor scuff and scratch that require a bit of tarting up-nothing major!

Review 87:The location between the river Dee and the Llangollen Canal looking up at the steam railway was brilliant. I thought the sound of the rushing white water would keep me awake; it actually lulled me to sleep! Our bedroom had a balcony overlooking the river, the restaurant also overlooked the white water and the kayakers and rafters passing by. There was plenty of lounge space to sit and relax with a drink from the bar, also lovely areas outside to sit and take in the scenary. I loved the old decor, the carved panelled walls and architrave. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

Review 88:The location of this hotel was just perfect for us. The breakfast was amazing and all staff were friendly and helpful. The mix of background music was an additional extra - particularly enjoyed the Manic Street Preachers combined with the Smiths and The Stone Roses! The setting with the noise of the river is great because there are no issues with noise from other rooms as this is 'drowned' out. :)

Review 89:Balcony door was difficult to lock and didn't fit properly. Having booked a table in the restaurant we were asked to eat in the bar which was not bad. Shortage of tea bags in our room. No flannels/face cloths. No replacement shower gel and shampoo on second day. Squeaky floor boards which may disturb people below.

Review 90:Friendly staff

Review 91:little pricey meals room far too warm

Review 92:lovely location. nice walk along tow path into town, will return when chain bridge is repaired and we can walk over it.

Review 93:Nothing

Review 94:Location - outside interesting town and in a beautiful area. Riverside location. Good restaurant. Decking, lounges and room balconies over-looking river

Review 95:Slightly a long walk into town especially for overseas visitors without transport Pity the bridge is in a rather delapidated state.

Review 96:The room overlooking the river together with the great balcony. The pub had a friendly atmosphere as also the staff at the reception who were very helpful

Review 97:Leaving, wanted to stay longer.

Review 98:Loved the views, friendly helpful staff, fresh cooked breakfast, lovedthe veranda outside room, nice to have your own outdoor space.

Review 99:Wi-fi not available in bedrooms but was available in public areas.

Review 100:Location by the roaring River Dee, contrasting with the peace of the Llangollen Canal on the other side of the hotel with a short walk to Horseshoe Falls. The view and nostalgia of the steam railway seen across the river from the hotel. Other attractions and splendid scenery are not far away. We hope to come back to see a restored chain bridge in the future.

Review 101:Room with balcony overlooking the river. A nice bar with terrace by the river with a restaurant adjacent and tables overlooking the river. This hotel is ideally situated for exploring the area.

Review 102:The only very minor drawback was that the wifi did not reach into the bedroom but it was fine in the lounge area.

Review 103:Location, food and particularly the balcony & furniture to be able to sit out and enjoy the location to it's full.

Review 104:The Chainbridge is situated in an idyllic location, about 2 miles out of Llangollen - which can be reached by walking along the towpath beside the Llangollen canal and about half a mile from the Horseshoe Falls. The hotel itself is nestled between the River Dee and the aforementioned canal, offering stunning views of the river and the Berwyn station on the opposite bank that serves the steam railway. The rooms on the side of the hotel facing the river have balconies overlooking the Dee and it is hard to think of a more tranquil location that we have stayed in. We arrived in Llangollen during the Eisteddfod and cannot believe the value for money offered by this hotel during a period when they could probably charge whatever they wanted (and get it!) Very highly recommended.

Review 105:Tasteless food (dinner & breakfast). Uncomfortable beds. Dirty rooms needing refurbishment; no excuse for cobwebs around the bedroom light fitting + poorly installed old/cheap bathroom fittings . Ugly modern(ish) poorly executed extension to the old part of the hotel, providing second-rate bedroom accommodation & spoiling the excellent location. Chainbridge (the actual bridge) in a dilapidated condition. Poor quality & badly fitted uPVC windows throughout. As a property developer, I recommend removing all the additions to the old hotel & building a new extension in keeping with the old building. The current extension & other additions are a blight on the beautiful location - I don't understand how planning permission was achieved!

Review 106:Excellent location. Sitting areas good.

Review 107:Couple of minor issues like no tube in light fitting on dresssing table and exposed wire in bathroom - nothing major

Review 108:Can't beat the location and the views were to die for. Excellent food and lots of comfortable rooms in the main part of the Hotel to relax and read. Wish we'd booked for longer than 2 nights as there is so much to see and do in the region

Review 109:I was a bit disappointed with the evening meals

Review 110:The location overlooking the River Dee was good and it was very tranquil with the canal on the other side

Review 111:excellent location & friendly staff

Review 112:Brilliant view of the river, food was very good nice warm room

Review 113:The situation of the hotel and the friendly staff along with the cleanliness and soft lighting.

Review 114:Location

Review 115:View of river, lounge area, fish and chips were the best ever. The canal behind the hotel.

Review 116:Love the balcony. It was nice to see the new bridge.

Review 117:The evening meal was awful.Very dry chicken, tasteless sauce.

Review 118:The view from the balcony room. The hotel being so near to horseshoe falls.Comfy beds

Review 119:I wish I had booked a longer stay.

Review 120:Beautiful view of the reiver rapids from our private balcony. Delicious meal served by friendly staff.

Review 121:nothing

Review 122:location

Review 123:Bulbs out in the room and bathroom and a little tired decor

Review 124:excellent location, Great Breakfast, basically good

Review 125:TV terrible, WiFi not available throughout most of the hotel

Review 126:Location absolutely stunning!

Review 127:The food was poor, and the bedroom tired, missing light bulbs. There is only Wifi near the reception.

Review 128:The location, and view across the river.
