Reviews for Great Western Hotel Swindon

Review 1:Asked for a quiet room and given one next to the stairwell - the doors slammed constantly as people used them so not a great nights sleep. Teh soundproofing of the rooms could also be improved as the floorboards creaked as well in my room and the ones above. Room 9. Breakfast was pretty limited but the cofffee was superb!

Review 2:Loaction was great as opposite the railway station and 15 mins walk from Designer Outlet Village and the offices i needed to visit. The room was small but very clean and bed was comfy.

Review 3:This is a city-centre hotel so there is a fair bit of traffic - the windows are not double-glazed and this would improve the hotel if this were done.

Review 4:Very helpful and friendly staff, surprisingly modern (recently refurbished by the look of it) large room, good food in evening and at breakfast.

Review 5:We arrived quite late in the night after a long journey and walked into a freezing room. We tried to put the radiators on with no success. The shower wasn't great and we only had one bath towel between us. Staff were very helpful, polite and cheerful. However, it was the cheapest room that I could find and you pay for what you get!

Review 6:The breakfast was lovely and the location excellent.

Review 7:have to pay £5 a night for carpark ... nothing on website stating this. Pillows awful. payment was taken 4 days before arriving. bathroom small with door hitting toilet. couldnt connect laptop to wifi only phones

Review 8:room was behind hotel, good size room bed comfortable. Cooked brakfast was ok

Review 9:could do with a new bed. a sofa or extra chair would have been nice only 1 chair to sit on ..heating did not work at first but they got it working after a few hours but room was very cold as its a old buliding with old windows we was offered a free drink for the heating prob

Review 10:we booked a twin room as they do not do kingsize beds only doubles. What surprised me when booking this hotel was that it was an extra £10.00 to book a twin. Work that one out!!! Never known that before. When we went into our room it was like walking into a prison cell. it was freezing radiator not working, The window had black gunk growing all around the frame, the window frame had not even been painted. The bathroom was a disgrace and there was no hot water coming through. On the whole very shabby and dirty. When I complained they moved us into a refurbished room, but they only had a double. This was much better but the room was tiny and we couldn't pass each other in the room. We could have coped with this but the bed was so uncomfortable and small you could feel the bed springs. Why in a "new" room they didn't have a better quality bed is beyond me. On the plus side, although the bathroom was tiny the shower was really good and powerful. upon leaving asked the deputy manager about the difference in price of £10.00 between the twin room we had booked and the double we ended up in. He said as it was a refurbished room they couldn't refund but he couldn't make that decision so I asked that someone contacts me to discuss this he assured me someone would, but guess what no one has and I am still waiting. Poor customer service from Great Western. When you are booking online you only see photos of "refurbished rooms" and not the tatty, dirty and cold ones. Overall not a nice experience, even though it is in a good location there are far better hotels for the same price located centrally. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Review 11:Breakfast wasn't too bad overall but not the best. Shower was hot and powerful

Review 12:Might be just me but the bed was a touch soft for my liking and felt past its best. The cost of drinks was too high.

Review 13:Friendly helpful staff, was very clean and good value for money. Really good singer in the bar on the 29th Oct. Breakfast was good too.

Review 14:the mattress was poor. springs going boing, in the night.

Review 15:the whole place looked recently refurbished. breakfast was missing a couple of items, mushrooms, scrambled eggs.total value for money.

Review 16:Limited evening menu - but food well presented. Paying extra for overnight car parking price

Review 17:Location - v Close to main railway station. Good breakfast Warm room - good shower

Review 18:No significant issues but the room was somewhat dated in its appearance, but still clean and comfortable with full amenities.

Review 19:Friendly and helpful staff and great location for purpose of my visit.

Review 20:The room does not match with the picture that I received in the confirmation email.

Review 21:The hotel is clean. Close to the train station. Breakfast is great.

Review 22:Would have been a lovely old railway hotel in its day but seems nobody cares much now. Tired looking, chipped enamel in bath, moderate cooked breakfast and little healthy options.

Review 23:Very friendly and helpful staff and great location across from station.

Review 24:Curtains are thin and let through too much light. Easy win to fix.

Review 25:This is a budget hotel but it is better than a standard budget hotel as it has character and delivers on all you need. Clean, happy staff, a popular bar (live singing on our night) but as the building is Victorian noise was not such an issue.

Review 26:Stayed in a room without an en-suite bathroom; the toilet and shower facilitates were down the corridor and shared between a number of guests. The room was extremely noisy overlooking the main road and the station itself, disco music played until late. The standard of the room poor with limited comforts and old furniture. The breakfast was limited and it was necessary to share tables. This hotel's main asset is its location, ideal for the railway station. In future I would travel further to a hotel with better facilities and at a more justifiable cost.

Review 27:Location, staff were friendly.

Review 28:Mattresses were (even when they had been changed) very poor. I had a horrific night sleep as a result. I mentioned to the staff in the morning that if I was staying for work, I would be even less happy. The cost also seemed very high.

Review 29:Staff and cleanliness were positive. Breakfast was modest but good.

Review 30:My room was the worst I have ever seen. It was dirty, shabby is an understatement and thrown together with no thought at all.

Review 31:The guys behind the bar was nice!

Review 32:the room was obviously a staff room. to be fair I didn't realise it was a shared bathroom until it was too late to change - however the facilities were disgusting. Obviously used either by staff or long term lodgers. the shower tray overflowed which meant you were walking in a puddle of water. The toilet wasn't very clean, the sinks were disgusting (previous hair form shaving, dirty etc) . In the bedroom the curtains were coming off the rail, there was no bedside lamps and the carpet was dirty and threadbare. The room was up a dark back stairs - the carpets were filthy,

Review 33:clokseness ot the railway station

Review 34:We were located at the front end opposite the railway station. Single paned glass in rooms (I suspect this is because its a listed building) but it was super noisy from the traffic during the night. I asked for a room with a bath, which I got but there was no plug in the bath!

Review 35:Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was superb. Quality of food one of the best I've tasted in a Best Western.

Review 36:doors slamming closed late at night; need new door closures £5 per night for parking is too much!

Review 37:lovely ale and breakfast, clean bathroom and hot shower

Review 38:Comfortable budget hotel. Helpful staff. Good breakfast. Handy for 'Steam' railway museum, shops and offices. In the perfect position for rail travellers, just across the road from the mainline station.

Review 39:I cannot fault the staff, Gavin who was on duty the whole of our stay made sure we were looked after and was very professional. The two rooms our party occupied were in the annexe at the back and were newly decorated and the en suite facilities were excellent. Breakfast was superb!

Review 40:walking into the hotel the block paving was lose and i ended up with black horrible water all over my shoes legs and trousers. i arrived at 6.20pm had to g and shower to get the black stuff off my legs. When i went downstairs for something to eat, it was 7pm, the kitchen shut at 7pm, not good ! Had to go and buy a sandwich from the shop

Review 41:very clean and tidy!

Review 42:extremely stinky room - right above kitchen extractor! - miserable bed quality - we had almost "broken back" in the morning. Room would need restoration - 15 years ago. not clean - had stain on my pillow at arrival :-( Reception staff terribly unprofessional, please don't ask questions - you want answers - check internet! Expensive parking. Should have spent 40 Euros more for a really clean and good place. Breakfast average.

Review 43:nothing!

Review 44:There were no hooks or rails to hang anything on in the bathroom. Clothes and towels had to be left on the floor. Likewise, nothing suitable to hand wet towels on in room

Review 45:Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 46:Both times we have stayed there has been Saturday nights and they were not serving meals on either occasion, if this is permanent I think it should be mentioned on the website.

Review 47:Stayed here earlier this year so knew it was good. Breakfast was plentiful and very good. Staff very helpful, not very happy when shown to a room with no window but as soon as I told the staff we were moved to another room.

Review 48:Room had water damage and a broken window - though staff did point out the damaged window when showing me the room. Other guests in the comunal area left some rather dubious posessions out, which though I wasn't bothered about, other guests may have been aprehensive about.

Review 49:Good location, staff helpful, room secure and comfortable.

Review 50:Perfect for the station, so a great option for travellers. Friendly helpful staff; clean comfortable room. I would happily stay there again if I was in the area.

Review 51:Not much good about this stay - it was one of worst nights I have had in recent years!! Too noisy - Room was on the main road without sound proof wall / No black out certain/toilet door would not shut/Wifi password was not working/breakfast starts too late at 0800/The room was very aged - need a lot more TLC

Review 52:The room size - big enough Clean bedding and towels I was happy leaving the place behind!

Review 53:Drinks a little pricey..

Review 54:Pleasant staff, help and friendly. Comfortable and a short distance from the main restaurants in the town. No fuss check in or check out. Exactly what we needed before a nearby event the following day. Unfortunately we didn't have time to try the breakfast after leaving quite early in the morning.

Review 55:We regularly visit family in Swindon by rail & the GW is right opposite the station for an overnight stay. Very modern inside, clean & friendly with good food & drink.

Review 56:Wi-fi was hit and miss - slow or non-connecting, room was stiflingly hot even with window open as there was no air conditioning.

Review 57:Bed was very comfortable, excellent shower and great location right by railway station

Review 58:no disabled parking bays. car park was pay and display. could not move the car due to lack of spaces and commuters using car park. was not informed that there was no lift and that there were about twenty stairs to climb, as i have only one lung and two bad knees this was a massive problem. there were rooms on the ground floor so we could have been changed to one of these when i booked, as i informed them of the need for ground floor accommadation prior, when booking in fact. when my wife suggested going to another hotel she was told because it was within 24 hours we would still have to pay. we were left to take our luggage upstairs on our own, help on arrival would have been good not suggestions when leaving. during the evening we went downstairs for an evening meal only to find school children playing very loud music in the lounge bar, and found that we could not have a meal there because of this taking place. we had to walk through streets to get something to eat in a not too nice area. when we got back to the hotel we were greeted by the manager who at that point said he was sorry we had had problems, and was there anything he could do. we said it was a bit late for that, but he did allow us to have breakfast at 9.30 instead of the 9.00 cut off. if we returned in the future he would make sure things were done correctly, which was not really any help as we will not be returning to this hotel ever.

Review 59:nothing

Review 60:Everything! Shared bathroom, dirty carpets, windows and curtains. Kitchen outside bedroom door, noise from train station - disgusting breakfast and staff unfriendly/unhelpful.

Review 61:Nothing

Review 62:There was a bit of confusion in the morning as the hotel ordered me a taxi and said they would tell me when it arrived. The taxi was ordered but nobody gave me the message. But this was not a major problem and if I had been tight on time there was a taxi rank just e few minutes away. I paid £85 for the night, including a very good cooked breakfast. I don't think this was cheap. I would value it at about £65 to £70

Review 63:The ease of access from Swindon station. The hotel's clean and bright interior and the friendly helpful staff. Apparently I had one of the most modern rooms (11?) and it was fine I would stay again.

Review 64:Rooms Tired and need attention to dertail. Nasty stain on the Divan. Bathroom whilst not dirty needed to be cleaned with a better eye for detail

Review 65:Location & Great Breakfast

Review 66:My sisters room was very noisy 205 still waiting to see Gavin after asked for a room move Price charged not price booked £200 was 210 not counting parking my niece £300 was charged 318 plus parking will be ringing to complain

Review 67:The only evening food available was the set bar menu of "junk" food. The rooms were shabby. Their car park is a public pay and display one and I found no mention that, as a resident, you could obtain a permit so it cost £12 to park overnight. Have got to go back to the area soon but will not be staying in this hotel again!

Review 68:The bar was nicely decorated.

Review 69:We were put in the annex and in room number 1 so everyone had to walk past our room to get to theirs. It was really noisy at night as group of lads came back drunk and were swearing and being very noisy. If I stay again I will aske for a room in the main hotel.

Review 70:The staff were amazing, really friendly and helpful. The room and bar were nicely decorated and the breakfast was lovely.

Review 71:The floorboards were very creaky. Could have done with blackout curtains - woke up one morning thinking it was about noon from the sun in the room, in reality it was 04-30!

Review 72:Clean, well decorated and reasonably comfortable. It was obvious that a lot of money had been spent on refurbishing this property throughout. TV, wi-fi and tea/coffee making facilities all in room.

Review 73:Room was charged through on the credit card which I used to secure the booking in my absence before I had got to the check in. As it turned out, I didn't want to pay that way (only use card to hold the booking) so this was a little inconvenient.

Review 74:I was looking good for a cheap hotel to stay in for 1 night while visiting friends. This hotel fitted in perfectly with this. Although no frills about the room it was clean and tidy and the price was cheap. Just what I wanted. Common areas like bar, breakfast area and reception all looked recently updated clean and fresh. Staff friendly and helpful. Full cooked Breakfast was excellent.

Review 75:only downside, and due to a bad knee, no lifts, stairs were a problem, but we were given a more accessible room because of this

Review 76:just easy access to Swindon easy parking, and generally very clean and nice.

Review 77:There was a private party in the main bar area so had to make do with small room at back of hotel,so no food being served on the Saturday night (see likes).

Review 78:Staff were great, arrived about 8pm and wanted food, (see dislikes) had surprise when one of the bar staff arrived at table with two plates of sandwiches etc free of charge.

Review 79:Room 1 was close to the entrance door and could hear door banging. So little bit noisy despite requesting a quiet room,

Review 80:Chose this place because of proximity to the station. Stayed in the annexe. Room was clean and newly furnished. Good bed and had a really good nights sleep. Nice breakfast. Helpful staff.

Review 81:Spoke already to the staff and they sorted it. So no issues ☺

Review 82:Staff were friendly and attentive.Location was excellent facilities were ok as was the comfort. ☺

Review 83:Would like to see some fruit and healthier options for breakfast. No heating in room first night, facing noisy road. Unhelpful bar staff on first night of stay.

Review 84:Some of the staff were very helpful. Close to centre and train station.

Review 85:Only that the wi-fi didn't work during my stay.

Review 86:Room v clean, comfortable and well decorated. Good choice at breakfast, friendly and cheerful staff.

Review 87:first thing i was told was its £5 a day parking so thats a tenner gone, although its free parking in your ad, taken across the forecourt to the annex to room 2, even though i requested a room away from the road, let alone the middle of a car cark. very dirty carpet, half the hooks missing on the curtains, same for the shower curtain, paper thin walls, hearing everything 2 doors down, no heating and the shower worked when it wanted. accomodation needs serious upgrading if they want continuous buisness as thats the luxury people expect when going away.

Review 88:very friendly and helpful manager,Great location for railway, town centre, and other ammenities, excellent breakfast with good choice with fresh food always being added. very friendly staff except the chap in glasses who kept me waiting for 30 minutes to get some extra milks, only to find him smoking outside with a couple of woman, when i asked where are my milks he forgot. clearly to busy getting a fag break .....

Review 89:It was fairly noisy as right by the station, also the window in our room didn't fit well and rattled, soon fixed by jamming a towel in the sash though.

Review 90:This hotel is great for a stopover, we were in Swindon for a wedding so just one night. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was pretty good. The room was clean but not special, fine for the price.

Review 91:Staff not the best service or flexibility not knowing location to restaurants or what is available. Breakfast staff (1) was really nice and willing to help but had others jobs to do as well.

Review 92:The fact that rooms are ok

Review 93:Would recommend soft closing doors Don't be put off by the tired exterior

Review 94:Bar area and bedrooms were of a high standard, clean and bright Conveniently located opposite the train station

Review 95:We were not in the main hotel building we were in the outside extension part, we were in the first room which was right next to the main entry door, people coming and going all night slamming the door causing a poor nights sleep and a cold draft in our room everytime door opened.

Review 96:Breakfast was excellent with friendly morning staff, free wifi

Review 97:The curtains only had a few rings on them so where very difficult to close they where two radiators in the room but neither worked properly so got a bit cold early morning

Review 98:The staff where friendly and helpful and the room was clean and spacious

Review 99:Security was ver lax - which was a real concern in a very dodgy area due to the number of beggars approaching me right outside the hotel. The door to the hotel was wide open and did not swing closed automatically at 11pm at night. Bathroom was filthy - absolutely disgusting to be honest. Also I was not given the code to access the Wi-Fi.

Review 100:Gentleman who checked me in was pleasant.

Review 101:First contact with staff could have been better, you book in at bar and he was more interested in serving, didnt even say hello. Premium room on the small side.

Review 102:Overall it was good, still a bit of refurb work going on but clean and tidy, breakfast was buffet style but fresh and hot, owner very polite.

Review 103:Wifi not great!

Review 104:Stayed here for a night with my partner, excellent location across from train station & 5 minutes to shops! Breakfast was good and plenty full! Room was nice and clean! But I have to say what makes this place so special is the friendly staff! Very welcoming and we felt very well looked after! We would definitely recommend this place for a nights stay!

Review 105:Happened to visit during renovations. Not a major problem but bar closed early when we were dying for a drink!

Review 106:Location was across the road from the station and the staff were very friendly and helpful (particularly Andrej and Jana)

Review 107:Nothing.

Review 108:My wife & I stayed at this hotel in January for 2nights & it was perfect for what we needed. The room was clean, warm & the bed was comfortable. The staff were friendly and happy to help with any requests we had. Lovely place to stay.

Review 109:Nothing - it was a very good stay!

Review 110:I had a very nice double room, quiet, clean, modern and comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. A very nice cooked breakfast.

Review 111:Shame there wasnt any hot food on Saturday eve, but still found a good restaurant 7 mins walk away

Review 112:bedroom was clean and well appointed, although the plug in room 3 didnt close so my husband found wet shaving rather difficult, bed a bit hard, but otherwise lovely.

Review 113:The rooms were really clean and nice! Had no password or instructions on how to log into wifi, but other than that fab place! Had a nice breakfast and really comfy bed

Review 114:Wifi was a little weak, I had to sit by the door to have stable access to internet. However my room was at the end of the building, so it might be better in the rest of the hotel.

Review 115:Nice old building Good location and quiet Very nice and helpful staff Good value for money

Review 116:The size of the bathroom, it was quite small. Expensive hotel considering facilities/comfort available.

Review 117:Free Wi-Fi was nice to have and helpful. The staff were all very friendly and polite. The room was standard but did appreciate the television and hair dryer. The hotel was able to accommodate early arrival which was convenient.

Review 118:The Beer was stinking, and the is WIFI hopeless

Review 119:Good location, great staff, and its warm. Overall it is worth the money and I would recommend it for a stay in Swindon. The food is OK, and there is a great pub across the road.

Review 120:The hotel/bar is currently undergoing some refurbishments that we wasn't aware of. Therefore work had started when we went for breakfast so was dusty and noisy.

Review 121:Our breakfast was lovely and cooked fresh on arrival to breakfast. We didn't go on the train but would be an ideal location if you decided to go to Swindon via the train.

Review 122:The management may need to look at the following things as they progress. Better signage of where to go to check in, shouting at the busy bar is not ideal. Up dating some of the furnishings in the room. Adding a bin close to the tea and coffee making facilities. And while the bathroom was clean I would be concerned about the flooring used in it and how long it would stay clean

Review 123:Before I go further I would like to point out it is clear this hotel is just re-establishing itself. The room I had was on the second floor it was a fair size clean and well presented that was nothing that struck you as poor when you walked in the room. The staff Where friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was freshly prepared.

Review 124:I checked in late at night with only one busy staff attending and no indication of reception!

Review 125:Good location just opposite rail station, value for money and separate but clean toilet & bathrooms.

Review 126:Building work going on and reception was in public bar. Looked a bit like a pub with rooms but you could see that they had plans for improvement and the work was in earnest.

Review 127:The welcome was good and room was very clean and had everything a traveller required. Breakfast was in bar but generous and tasty.

Review 128:Minimal water pressure in the shower

Review 129:Friendly helpful staff, warm cozy room (204)

Review 130:Perfect location at the train station

Review 131:Says parking on site but didn't say you had to pay,

Review 132:Location was idea for our trip, staff were friendly modern furnishings

Review 133:A little pricey for what is really a pub with bedrooms.

Review 134:Lovely staff.

Review 135:Very nice room and great location

Review 136:The breakfast

Review 137:Breakfast didn't have food for vegetarians.

Review 138:Good location 24/7 access Reasonable parking
