Reviews for Best Western Grand Hotel

Review 1:Shower did not work - not rectified despite being reported. Limited choice for evening meal Effectively expensive B&B

Review 2:In-house Indian restaurant

Review 3:No hot water and bath not draining in 1st room. Moved to another room - this time no heating - radiator was leaking, although there was a portable fan heater already in the room!! - maybe it's a long standing issue?

Review 4:Goid location, room(s) I was in were roomy.

Review 5:The showers in all the rooms we booked did not work very well so that was a little disappointing.

Review 6:The room was good and the beds were very comfy and had a great sleep!

Review 7:If you are in a wheelchair, it's hard work getting around the hotel. All the doors are extra-wide (good), but they are all on strong springs, which are difficult to overcome on your own. The ramp to get into the hotel is round the side and into a tradesman's entrance, through a storage area and then through a function/entertainment hall.

Review 8:It's close to the main railway and roads for access, but quiet enough for a good nights sleep.

Review 9:My last two days was horrible as there was no hot water or heater in the room. I had the clean myself with cold after sleeping all night in cold. I believe costumers should be prewarned about lack of hot water/heating

Review 10:the staffs were good and they tried their best to help.

Review 11:The rooms were far too hot. We mentioned this to the housekeeper, who said that others had also complained but they had been told to turn it on. Ridiculous. We opened the window but the noise of youngsters leaving Yates kept us awake.

Review 12:In-house sports bar seemed a bit "blokey" and would not be the sort of bar to sit for a quiet drink with partner.

Review 13:Room was comfortable and warm. Reception staff were efficient and courteous.

Review 14:We were not offered an upgrade on arrival and could not open the door of the room. We complained next morning that shaving light did not work, the shower was only luke warm and we could not read in room even with bedside lamps on. English Breakfast was very poor, could not cut the bacon rashers ! On return to room nothing had been rectified except shaving light was replaced. We would have accepted and expected a partial refund on the price. none was offered !

Review 15:Able to unload outside !

Review 16:Old,old hotel - heating permanently on so had to open window to cool down

Review 17:As it's part of a chain you know what to expect. Indian restaurant was good.

Review 18:The room was too hot even though radiators were off the pipes still made the room hot. We did have a fan in the room. Music was played below But that finished around midnight.

Review 19:Spacious bed very big friendly staff great facilities in room tv hairdryer kettle

Review 20:Poor English breakfast (taste wise) and our room (16) we could be seen through the glass fronted hallway going to the bathroom (no privacy curtains)

Review 21:Cleanliness, room/ensuite and period features of dining hall.

Review 22:nothing

Review 23:Lovely stay at Grand Hotel. Nice bedroom, clean and spatious. Breakfast was nice, choice of continental and full English. Free parking opposite hotel. Nice old fashion building, would go again.

Review 24:The shower wasn't especially hot and the flow was quite weak. The bath drained poorly.

Review 25:Impressive building in good central location, close to Railway Station. Staff friendly and helpful. Room attractively decorated in modern dtyle.

Review 26:Couldn't adjust the temperature on the radiators. Television could have been larger with better sound. Bathroom ready for an upgrade but fine for the price. Nice to get the upgrade but room was directly above the band so still very noisy although not a problem for me as it ended at 11.00pm - it would have been if I'd needed an early night!

Review 27:Traditional old hotel but brought up to date very well. Very friendly staff. Excellent breakfast and Indian restaurant in the basement. Very good value for the price. Staff upgraded me from a single room to a twin on the 3rd floor unprompted as they advised there was a band playing in the Sports Bar. Nicely furnished room with plenty of lights.

Review 28:• Loud, thumping music at a function downstairs on Saturday night. • That a live world cup rugby match (featuring the All Blacks in a game at St James's Park) was not being shown on a single one of the sports bar's many screens. We mentioned it to the person who served us at the bar and she simply shrugged. In a multi-screen sports bar, surely (a) different events can be shown on different screens simultaneously, and (b) the staff should be aware of what events are being broadcast and be able to change channels as necessary. It's a sports bar, for heaven's sake!

Review 29:Friendly staff – at reception, at breakfast and simply passing in corridors and on the stairs.

Review 30:Two couches in the room - one was basically broken in half and couldn't sit in it. Only ONE window opened in the entire room which was boiling. Shower door wouldn't close and limescale all over the bath. Breakfast awful everything was just watery - didn't bother with it in check out day. On a Friday and Saturday extremely loud music from the sports bar including a karaoke. Honestly felt like it was in our room. Staff also should remind guests that people are staying in the hotel as when one of the parties finished on the Friday a massive brawl broke out at the front of the hotel and nothing was done about it - not even the pokice were called. Bathroom floor extremely slippy. Room very tired and in need of a good clean (especially the carpet), updating & lots of bits fixed (ie the cornicing - its a lovery old building - fix it correctly npt the awful atempt by plastering over it). Not comming back in a hurry...

Review 31:Room 104 suite - it was massive. Very impressed with the size of bathroom also. Great location for train station only a 5 minute walk away. I must exagerate hiw nuce the Staff werewhen we checked in and at breakfast also when leaving - really helpful with directiosn on where things are and how to get to them. Beds extremely comfortable.

Review 32:The bedding was far too hot

Review 33:in a great location and nicely appointed. Breakfast was very good with friendly, helpful staff. The onsiteIindian resteurant is excellent

Review 34:Lighting very poor in room so unable to read or see to apply make up or do hair. Also only ONE power point so had to keep unplugging kettle to use hair-styler, phone charger etc...

Review 35:Being in the centre of town was main attraction. Staff very attentive & helpful.

Review 36:Staff were rude. No answer when calling reception. Did not handled a couple having a very loud argument all night despite guesting complaining. General manager did not ring as promised to discuss.

Review 37:Location - perfect to get around town and near the Marinea

Review 38:Nothing, no seating areas to sit and have drink. Sports bar crammed, very little seating. Breakfast totally spoiled by plates being stone cold, requested some warm ones and was greeted by a blank expression.

Review 39:Breakfast wasn't a memorable experience; bacon not crispy; ditto hash brown; eggs - both scrambled and sunny side up - lukewarm.

Review 40:Staff kind and helpful; nice location, accommodation clean and comfortable.

Review 41:Were allocated a room that appeared to be occupied when we walked in! However, we were then upgraded as a token of their embarrassment....a genuine error rectified quickly

Review 42:Being upgraded to a HUGE room with Jacuzzi bath !

Review 43:The bar closing quite early. It was my wedding day and after the reception it would have been nice to have had a toast with just my family at the hotel.

Review 44:Pillows

Review 45:Picky but lift was rather slow

Review 46:The friendly and obliging staff we encountered throughout the hotel. They were professional and approachable at all times

Review 47:Nothing not to like.

Review 48:As I am a railwayman it is Ideally situated just a short walk from the station. Had I'd driven there is ample parking. The fine Victorian building has been sympathetically modernised inside.

Review 49:Lift was tiny and waited ages for it to arrive up and down. Very noisy on Thursday nights.

Review 50:Rooms had tea / coffee etc and kettle with ironing board etc.

Review 51:The wrong password for the wifi was shown in the hotel information book in our bedroom. The restaurant is a bit gloomy and could be brightened up.

Review 52:Very large bedroom and bathroom. Friendly, helpful waitress in the breakfast room.

Review 53:The breakfast was exelent

Review 54:The room was alright NO 106 on the first floor but the music from the down stairs was so loud it might as well have been in the bedroomit went on till eleven fourty we rang reception three times over half an hour no answer then when we did said sorry they could not change the room we use the best western all the time when ever we go off which we do very often also go for sunday lunch most weeks to the comsort in Rotherham i think we should have recieved a deduction on our bill as two old people in our late seventys who could not get to sleep till well turned midnight for the noise downstairs When told reception when checking out was not one bit interested we had been on the road all day

Review 55:Bed was very hard and was supposed to be a double but was in fact 2 singles pushed together. The bar was very very loud until the early hours and I had to close the windows which made the room very hot and Unbearable to sleep.

Review 56:Staff were very helpful and breakfast was excellent

Review 57:Noisy, asked for quiet room at the rear, none available - upstairs from the bar, tried to sleep vs. Karaoke and street noise - I lost! Very warm, no air conditioning so windows had to be open! Bar area needs to be cleaned up!

Review 58:Friendly staff, central location. Mumbai restaurant

Review 59:Only 15 parking spaces available for hotel guests, had to pay for a few hours parking then move my car into the council carpark next door to the hotel.

Review 60:very warm rooms you need more than just a fan to keep you cool. could do with air con

Review 61:lovely place to stay was very nice, very clean rooms was quiet and very friendly. only downside was the room was far too hot so found it hard to actually get off to sleep

Review 62:Cool shower but bath water was hot, not sure why this was?

Review 63:The room was good and the breakfast was very good, when served freshly cooked but self service on Sunday was cold.

Review 64:The room was clean although there was a hole in the window of the bathroom.

Review 65:We live in Hartlepool but were guests at a wedding so decided to stay over.

Review 66:Beds and pillows really poor quality (felt like sleeping on a concrete slap) Hotel seems to be a party zone and neither the house nor the windows are soundproof It's located at the end of a street with bars. Great if you like clubbing, bad if you want to sleep

Review 67:Stuff was really friendly Breakfast was excellent

Review 68:Parking-it was a joke. Wi-fi so weak it was non existent and staff who didn't look up from their screens when booking me in and asking me questions-very bad manners.

Review 69:i liked leaving, safe on the knowledge I won't be going back. Ever.

Review 70:Indian restaurant playing loud Indian music on loudspeaker outside. No reply from reception when phoned to complain. Only bar a noisy sports bar. Poor lighting in bedroom, dark red shades so no reading in bed.. No plates on breakfast buffet. When I asked for one was given my side plate, so then had no side plate & had to take one from another table. Breakfast served in 3 different locations during the 5 days.. Have known Grand Hotel for many years - no longer 'grand'. Were there 5 years ago and at least there was somewhere pleasant to sit and have a drink/meal. Weak & feeble shower. On last morning hot water tap stopped, then only cold water when it started again.

Review 71:The location

Review 72:Our room was very spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast is top-notch and the overall atmosphere of this converted Victorian mansion is wonderful!

Review 73:Drinking and smoking on both entrance steps to building. Broken glass on steps, spilled drinks. There was a reception on and guests were roudy and it made public areas uncomfortable. The public seating areas were awful. We were joined again at breakfast with some of the wedding guests drinking pints of stella for breakfast.

Review 74:Bed was comfortable large. I asked to be moved rooms as my first was not very nice. Receptionist was very obliging and helped us out. Second room was an improvement but still not as desirable as those on website.

Review 75:I loved the location .. The rooms were spotless .. Had everything I needed .. And all staff I came into contact with were very helpful and friendly .. Definatley stay here again.

Review 76:We've stayed in the suites a few times for the last two times the water for the spa bath & shower was cold so had to have cold bath & showers! Breakfast on the morning sausages & bacon were too hard to eat but rest of breakfast was okay..

Review 77:Spacious room, comfortable bed nicely decorated room

Review 78:Tv was pathetic. No hot water!! Breakfast was mediocre at best. And for the amount we paid could have stayed somewhere a lot better. No hot water is a disgrace. No offer of a refund or partial refund. Thoroughly disgusted!!!!!

Review 79:Sports bar and restaurant were both good. Room was ok tv was pathetic.

Review 80:The bath water was absolutely freezing meaning enjoying the spa bath in our room was impossible. Shower water was freezing too.

Review 81:Stayed in one of the large suites and it was very well presented and decorated. Hotel itself was nicely decorated too. Brilliant atmosphere in the sports bar and food was delicious!

Review 82:The drains from the bathroom smelt bad and there was no hot water to bathe or shower. Not a good performance here, I am a best western member so I seek out BW hotels whilst iam travelling on business, i will not use this hotel.

Review 83:The bed, room and staff all very good.

Review 84:Only served Indian food in restaurant so had to go out for evening meal. Only a sports bar for relaxing evening drink after long drive with football blaring out. wIf inaccessible even with help from reception.

Review 85:Location. Courteous staff

Review 86:We had no hot water in the room and the lock on bedroom door was very stiff and we had trouble locking and unlocking it.

Review 87:The room was big and bed nice and comfy. Hotel was clean overall and breakfast was nice and freshly made.

Review 88:The hotel is lovely in a great location. The only thing that let it down was the shower which had little water pressure. Once this is sorted will be great.

Review 89:No hot water, very warm room, noisy wedding party, lack of response to no hot water complaining nt

Review 90:Staff extended breakfast for us - from 10am to 10.10

Review 91:Under staffs. Too long waiting. No hot water for two nights at the highest floor.

Review 92:Friendly staffs. Compensated me the nights without hot water. Big nice room. Very nice Indian restaurant connected to the hotel.

Review 93:Only had an Indian resturant, so I had to eat out at a wetherspoons

Review 94:It was the location that was the deciding factor for staying here, my work was close by.

Review 95:Asked for a quiet room but had to be moved due to the noise from the function room as I wished to retire at 10pm not 12pm.

Review 96:Comfortable bed, relaxed atmosphere, nice staff. The staff member who dealt with "What didn't you like" was very, very good. She made my stay, in effect.

Review 97:As a single traveller, the plumbling was awful - toilet had to be flushed several times before clearing and the shower dripped and took ages to watm. Shower tray took overnight to clear. Rooms on third floor not good due to this.

Review 98:staff service very good as was quality of breakfast.

Review 99:The hotel is so central to everything including the train station which is only a 5 minute walk away. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Breakfast in the morning was excellent with a wide variety of food for every taste. Also an Indian restraunt on the premises.

Review 100:Shower water was lukewarm and the wifi was password protected, of which was not given out automatically on arrival or noted in the room for guest use, also the TV in the room was too small for the size of the room and was on a far wall from the bed and couch.

Review 101:The hotel was clean, tidy and well presented, the room was large and pleasant, breakfast was plentiful. The Indian restaurant was quite nice, as well as the bar with live music. The private car park was convenient and free.

Review 102:Sports bar was not really our "scene", but it was obviously popular with local people.

Review 103:Good breakfast and pleasant staff. Comfortable room. We attended a dinner and the food and service was very good.

Review 104:Water a bit on the cool side and their no smoking policy throughout, does not cater for a large proportion of people, though this is not the fault of the Hotel as this is the chain owners, Great Western dictate.

Review 105:Comfortable and staff very pleasant

Review 106:Only room service available was from the Indian restaurant which wasn't ideal as I'm not a fan Worst thing was the shower...a dribble of water that kept going hot and cold! Made us late for the wedding reception as it took so long to wash my hair! Very disappointing considering it was supposed to be a superior room...

Review 107:Bed was super comfy.

Review 108:Bathroom especially the shower requires upgrading breakfast nothing special

Review 109:Fantastic building lot of money spent downstairs not too sure if sports bar theme works though drinks reasonably priced

Review 110:Décor does need a little updating but not bad that it would ruin your trip.

Review 111:Based in a great location, lovely old building, staff were really friendly and chatty, bar was good with reasonably priced drinks, the Indian restaurant was 5star.

Review 112:Room too warm The only bar was too noisy Full English breakfast was served up while I was still eating my cereal and I saw this happen to others. The waiters were youngsters so probably needed more training. Late night music kept some of our group awake

Review 113:Breakfast The Staff were friendly and helpful

Review 114:Bar doesn't do any food so if Indian food is not your choice then you have to look elsewhere for dinner.

Review 115:Excellent Indian restaurant located in basement and pub on ground floor.

Review 116:The bar downstairs is a sports bar. It was very noisy but it was a Saturday night. The noise stopped quickly at about midnight but it was loud. Midweek may be fine though.

Review 117:Good central location, decent large rooms, clean and well presented. Free car park next door

Review 118:£65 for a single room is overpriced. On the website it mentions parking but doesnt say it is restricted. Shower in the room was cold

Review 119:Fairly central Decent adjoining bar Friendly staff

Review 120:Hotel tired decor dark and dreary Rooms very tired lack style and attention. A bit dirty and old Staff very nice but need substantially more training in all aspects service and etiquette with guests in every aspect of the guest experience Rooms need uodating in decor Detail to cleaning including lights kettles phone etc needs improving Room service breakfast missing butter and condiments It's a nice team but wholly under developed and untrained in some if the basic principles of running the hotel It was sad to see this for such a long standing hotel Reception again nice girls but need to stop friends stopping by for a chat and need to halt internal conversations to focus on guest first! When you have sharper and cleaner hotels nearby at half or a third of the price which are full up compared to the grand you need to start raising the bar and it's point of difference Needs attention but it won't take too much effort to achieve. It's simply about the detail and staff training and a bit of investment by Bw

Review 121:Friendly staff

Review 122:The restuarant was closed for refurb and bar food was only being served in a small room not the bar itself. We opted for room service instead but even that was different from menu in room, several things now discontinued that reception was unaware of until they order from kitchen. Finally settled on fish only to be told tartar sauce wasn't available once delivered and ketchup was just sachets! No table in room to eat at either so had to sit on bed! More furniture needed, especially for such a big room!

Review 123:We had a corner room so had double aspect windows, four floor to ceiling to be precise, so very light and airy...but not noisy despite being in the centre of town

Review 124:If we'd known about the refurbishment going on we wouldn't have booked. Also, a wedding party going on til 5.30am with extremely rowdy guests meant no sleep Saturday night.

Review 125:Location and friendly staff

Review 126:Very noisy throughout the night. Wedding party noisy till 2:30. Abusive shouting on landing next to room at 5am. Noisy unpleasant bar area with bouncers on door, loud TV and game machines. No slope access for partly disabled wife. Low powered shower - very slow to get warm. Limited breakfast selection on Sunday morning.

Review 127:Location close to station. Good room size with walk in shower. Comfortable bed. Helpful welcoming staff.

Review 128:the hotel seems a bit run down, even though the rooms have been renovated. there is a bit of an odd smell in the hallways and rooms. one side faces a street that is a bit loud.

Review 129:in general, everything was ok

Review 130:we have stayed in the grand on and off for almost 40 years and this is the first time we have been really been disappointed with the breakfast, it was that bad we did not have breakfast before we left, we went to greigs!.

Review 131:Our twin room was only set up for one person. Only one locker. Heat on corridors on full blast. Terrible breakfast, the worst poached eggs we've ever seen. Tea made from a flask of at best lukewarm water.

Review 132:Friendly staff and clean room

Review 133:Breakfast was inedible, toast was stale! Carpets in the room were dirty, the room smelt of stale cigarette smoke. Sea gulls screaming all night!

Review 134:The reception staff were very pleasant and very helpful

Review 135:Room was too hot to say the least, beverage facilities were poor in the room only enough milk for us to have one cup of tea each or coffee, one of the sinks in the room had no plug and the flush on the toilet was not strong enough. Breakfast food was of poor quality and was not even hot when served on Saturday, the breakfast buffet on Sunday was slightly warmer but not by too much. There were people waiting both mornings for tables to sit at due to being busy.

Review 136:The room was spacious to say the least with two leather sofas in it and two double size beds a bathroom that included Jacuzzi bath and power shower plus two sinks. The bar was good with a plentiful selection of beers and lagers to choose from, also there was live music on the Friday night who were great.

Review 137:Don't want to be picky as I know it has to compete to get people in, but the heavy rock band on the Friday night was just too loud for us to chat with friends, so we escaped to the marina bars. Noisy outside during the night with non-hotel related drunks on the street.

Review 138:The place is grand and you can see that once it would have been a truly magnificent hotel. Yes, it is a little tired in places, but given what it is up against and its town centre location it does well, with a decent Mediterranean restaurant (although it is now being refurbished) and a bar that sells real ale at £1.50 a pint!

Review 139:we booked a room here for after our wedding we arrived at 11pm the member of staff on reception was really friendly. our room was on the third floor we got no sleep all night because of the lift its really noisy banging all night. was really dissapointed wish we had booked somewere else!! we boked an executive room when we got to the room in looked nothing like it did on the pics on the internet. i would not recommend this hotel unless you don want any sleep.

Review 140:breakfast in th restrauant down stairs is realy nice with plent of choice :)

Review 141:small rooms, very noisy (close to police and fire station), not enough car parks (the alternative one must be left before 8am, otherwise the car gets clamped), heater can't be switched off (not insulated pipes through the room, anytime hot) and window must be closed (noisy, see above) - feels like sauna. WLAN broke sometimes, if it works it's quite slow. Desk very small (hard for working with laptop on it).

Review 142:Nice old building, friendly staff on reception, coffee maker in room, WLAN fee.
