Reviews for Abbey Grange Hotel
Review 1:Water was scalding hot which made a shower impossible. Not the end of the world as there is a bath but would have liked the option having paid for the room and facilities. Also, in bad winds or rain, the tv doesn't work at all. Not really their fault given the location but worth a mention. Staff lacked any kind of expression. Just barely running through a script of lines. No service with a smile here!
Review 2:My bed was wonderful. Room was clean. Dinner is served until 9pm and there is some form of entertainment most nights, nothing can be heard in the rooms.
Review 3:Bathroom and shower could do with updating but fantastic value for money.
Review 4:Loved the location, my room and four poster bed, very warm and welcoming hotel, Emma the barmaid was friendly and great at her job, fantastic food in the restaurant, will return again, a real surprise!
Review 5:The hotel is located in a very beautiful spot near the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey. The staff were friendly. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was good ,especially the porage.
Review 6:Great location with access to the river and local attractions only a short drive away. Warm, friendly welcome from the proprietors and their staff and also offers a range of local ales and good food.
Review 7:We waited a very long time (50nins) for our pub grub. Breakfast started way too late at 8.30 for us as we were on a walking holiday
Review 8:It was a lovely hotel and the room was huge with a lovely bath. The barmaid was very helpful and made us up a tray breakfast of cereals, fruit and ham and cheese sandwiches
Review 9:Minor issues: No remote for TV Breakfast not available until 8.35am and early start needed (although breakfast service very quick following request)
Review 10:Value for money - good food - V good beer brewed on site - fantastic location/area - Room very clean and pleasant - would stay again
Review 11:Just one Staff member. Serving in the dining room at breakfast time. She did not appear friendly. Gave only one word answers or a point with a finger. And this same Staff member walked away from me, when I asked her a question, without answering. And I needed to call her back to me to answer my question.
Review 12:The price and the location.
Review 13:Bathroom needs updating, floorboards creaked badly on upper floor, so heard everyone coming & going. Reception closed when booking out
Review 14:Large room & comfortable bed, had a bar & restaurant on site
Review 15:Wi-fi was very poor. Breakfast on Saturday was cereal and cooked menu, but Sunday morning there was a bowl of fresh fruit salad and yogurts, why the difference. Breakfast menu offered coffee & de-caff coffee but they had no de-caff. The waitress on the Sunday morning was rather surly, huffing and puffing about every request from customers. All of the other staff were very good. The bed wasn't very comfortable either, cheap mattress
Review 16:Views from bedroom, very clean.
Review 17:Everything was great for me
Review 18:Nice location , friendly welcoming staff, breakfast was brilliant good choice, I did have one main meal , it was good and fairly priced ,gladly go back again
Review 19:Very poor quality breakfast.Breakfast not available early enough. No plllow cases available during our stay.Very little contact with any staff
Review 20:Location good for what we wanted to do
Review 21:the beds where awful. The room was old but clean, the breakfast was burnt and the staff where unfriendly if u ever saw them, location was lovely but too far out of town.
Review 22:Llangollen and great beer also sell great t-shirts
Review 23:Unfortunately as our dog is very poorly I had to carry him up the stairs. A downstairs room would have been appreciated. For travellers an earlier start to breakfast would be a good idea.
Review 24:Lovely location, beautiful views, quaint, very clean, good room. Evening staff and meal very good. Breakfast left a lot to be desired. I was very glad that dogs were welcomed.
Review 25:Room was clean but bath room grouting was mouldy, pillows were Brown and stained, broken drawers in dressing table, unfriendly staff and rude owner/manager
Review 26:Location and outlook
Review 27:A cheerful member of staff would have been nice. There were no complimentary toiletries which would have been helpful as we had none with us!
Review 28:Quiet, comfortable and clean. Bar food was great and breakfast choice was good. Beautiful location just outside Llangollen.
Review 29:Breakfast service doesn't open until 08:30 on any day, which is rather late. Worse is that it can then take 15mins to get a coffee and 30mins to get a cooked (2 consecutive days) which is too long; partly this is because there is queue due to late opening.
Review 30:easy to find, plenty of parking, walking distance to Llangollen railway and Dee valley etc. Good beer and excellent bar meal.
Review 31:Bath with shower attachment no screen or curtain. So had to have a weird bath/shower combo.
Review 32:Friendly welcome, good sized room,a bit warm but good opening windows. Good choice for breakfast . great view.
Review 33:Staff unapproachable, they gave the impression they were short staffed and overworked. Whole place needs a facelift and a bit of tlc.
Review 34:The vie was beautiful
Review 35:A bit out dated. Breakfast was minimalistic. Room was nice but bathroom no shower hand held shower only. Aged and patched up bathroom.
Review 36:Location and avilability.
Review 37:Very dated bathroom. Poor breakfast. Poor welcome. The lady who served breakfast had the worst attitude I have ever come across anywhere in the world. She was so miserable we found it quite amusing. The breakfast was poor.
Review 38:The rooms were comfortable and clean. Feather duvets. Very reasonable price £40 for a double room and £50 for a triple room. Pleasant lady working in the bar in the evening.
Review 39:rear rooms look out on ugly farm buildings and sheds. no lounge available when bar and dining room closed so effectively a B&B rather than a hotel. some staff morose. breakfast is from 8.30 to 9.30 which is too late for business travellers. decor is well worn and needs an overhaul. wallls so thin that noisy neighbours are a problem.
Review 40:good location adjacent to main road and with great views down the valley. possible to eat outside and enjoy the view. small bar with local beer. good value if you pay the discounted price.
Review 41:Room a bit tired and the bathroom lacked a shower screen, even though it had a shower!
Review 42:Nice aspect to the hotel, the views from the bedroom window were really good. Excellent local beer, well tested to make sure they were all ok. Good quality food, with local specialities to broaden the menu.
Review 43:If you can put up with lack / non existent WiFi and you don't have to go to work then being able to miss breakfast which starts at 08:30am this hotel is value for money
Review 44:Location, welcome, good size rooms, comfy bed, a bar.
Review 45:The staff unfriendly. Greeted by a woman in a green vest T shirt and tattoos down her arms and dirty nails. Had to pay up front for room. ( not surprising now ) Not allowed food in room. All food and drink has to be paid for at bar.Tea pot in room still with tea from previous people.White towels with brownish edges. Grubby cups, salt and pepper pots with black sticky finger prints on. Bed not properly made on arrival. Bottom sheet just layed on bed. Bathroom, that bath not properly cleaned. Orange soap scum on tiles. The farm from our window was cleaner and tidier. Overall not a place l would recommend to stay. Alex Polizzi would have a field day!!!!.
Review 46:Being able to leave !!
Review 47:The room smelt of the ccoking from the kitchen especially the bathroom.. We had to open all the windows to try and get rid of the smell. TV didn't work in the room and the wifi didn't reach the room we where in.
Review 48:Staff where lovely, friendly and very helpful
Review 49:Breakfast was average at best, might have been better if served with a friendly face, facilities in the room a bit dated, but to be honest not too bad for the amount paid.
Review 50:The bed was really comfortable, setting was very good just far enough out to be quiet, but near enough for access to town.
Review 51:The very rude owner , When you read Fresh Fish on the menu you expectthe same not Prehistoric plaice on the bone .or a plate of battered fish(no fish just stale batter)with burnt chips. When challenged the next daythe owner said "You've said it twice" You at least expectan apology To say it is a Free House with a brewary you expect as quoted,1 only or bottled beer on offer. The matteress had a dip at the top ,to compensate I had to use a pillow to fill the dip. We were asked topay up front on arrivel for 2 nights and for the dismal meal. NoWONDER.The presentation of the barstaff was not smart and no receptionstaff.IF You don't mind a peacock roaming free without a mentionthen that's fine, however it was a shock for myself as I amfrightened of them due to a bad eperience in the past.
Review 52:The View.
Review 53:Just a minor thing but it does get peoples backs up. There is a notice on the way into the bedrooms which asks guests not to take food into their rooms. A great hotel but things like this spoil it.
Review 54:A really nice location and really nice food. Loved the home made fruit crumble!
Review 55:Bedroom was rather small - no chairs - and one bed rather squeaky. Overall rather tired. Towels rough and shower basic.
Review 56:Good value for money - nice location
Review 57:No welcome off miserable staff, just wanted the money, room dreary, dark and dated. bathroom not as clean as it could with carpet on the floor?? bed uncomfortable and mattress cover stained with unmentionables .. breakfast looked just "okay" but tasted awful. Staff never spoke not-- even a smile.. we just wanted to leave but made the mistake of paying before we saw the room ....The fire door outside our bedroom door -room 8 , was padlocked... Could not find any staff to question then about this, very worrying to say the least .......
Review 58:All I can say that is a positive ---the room was spacious -that is all..
Review 59:Staff should learn to smile.walls in room paper thin and dust on some shelves.Breakfast, hard egg, over cooked black pudding, the only hot item was my sausage. Would not stay again
Review 60:The view from the front of the hotel, and the bed was comphy
Review 61:The decoration was appalling - really odd choices and very scruffy. Disgusting to look at really and the staff were badly dressed and lacking in charm
Review 62:Parrot should be kept in reception not dinning area. There is a brewery on site but none of its product was on tap in the bar. Cleaning of the beer line on Saturday evening was off putting and seemed inapproate time to clean them. Lots of business promotions and opportunities missed, ie. No menues in rooms to promote food. Breakfast not offered to the public, such as campers on site or other tourist.
Review 63:The location was great. Beautiful view of the country side.
Review 64:The evening meal was awful, the room not very clean. The internet was intermittent. It was the first time I've been asked to pay up in my bill on check-in. Breakfast was a little better but the girl serving was very glum & not friendly.
Review 65:It's in a beautiful location & the hotel looks lovely from outside with a nice garden/play area for kids
Review 66:Bedroom was a little tired but was clean. Wifi was spotty.
Review 67:Lovely location, set in really pretty grounds. Had a really good choice of real ales including one brewed on site.
Review 68:The setting of the hotel. Plenty of open space when the weather permits. Chickens roaming which meant free range eggs for breakfast. A car is a must as there is no public transport out here.
Review 69:Could do with someone sorting out important details - weak shower, broken shower head riser and missing shelf unit in bathroom (presumably also broken and not replaced). Did not replace towels every day. No coffee or tea facility in room. Dead flies in ceiling light covers.
Review 70:Pretty hotel set in a wonderfully, picturesque landscape. Great location for a base from which to explore the beautiful countryside around North Wales. Nice comfortable beds and good sized, nicely decorated rooms.
Review 71:Poor Wi-Fi and breakfast from 08:30am? Rubbish if you work. No point in filling out the feedback form left in room as they obviously don't read them as the pile on the landing indicates several weeks worth.
Review 72:Location, good size rooms.
Review 73:Nothing to deter staying again but for someone who works I had to miss breakfast as this wasn't until after 8:30?. Wi-Fi. connection was also a little hit'n'miss in room.
Review 74:Comftable room, table to work at good value for money.
Review 75:Terrible service at Breakfast. Some staff more helpful than others. Didn't feel very welcome. Wouldn't go back.
Review 76:Hotel was clean. Location good for walking holidays but taxi links to Llangollen very limited. Nobodys fault it's a remote location.
Review 77:This place is looking pretty shabby. My room smelled funky. My Dad ordered steak and ale pie from the restaurant and what he got was a grey unseasoned mess that should have NEVER made it out of the kitchen. It was awful. The wifi was spotty at best.
Review 78:Some of the staff were pleasant. The rooms appeared to be clean. The location is nice.
Review 79:Normally I don't leave negative remarks but I couldn't reallysee any positives about this hotel. Firstly the welcome wasn't thebest and when we saw the room it was dated, with no shower which Ithought was strange in this day and age. I was playing on the floor withmy 2yr old son and realised how dirty the carpets were as well ascovered in hair. At night the noise from the pub below did travel intothe room. Breakfast time was an awkward situation walking into the roomwith no real welcome and a long wait for food. It was a non welcominghotel with not much for value.
Review 80:The view out of the windows
Review 81:Dusty bedrooms and the carpet needed a hoover and no hairdryer in room. The hotel needs to have a makeover as the decor is a bit sad with too much "chintz" from the 1970s.I paid £85 for one night which is relatively expensive compared with properties elsewhere
Review 82:Great location in the summer with lovely view down the valley Great moose head ever!! A welcoming fire in the bar on a rainy night. A good breakfast but had to wait a long time ,the toast could have arrived before the main breakfast to keep hunger at bay!
Review 83:Paper thin walls meant I could hear all the snoring and peeing next door through the night. Shower was a trickle.
Review 84:Lovely spot one mile outside LLangollen in a beautiful valley. Service was amiable.
Review 85:Breakfast could start half an hour earlier, but when it came it was good. Staff need to be happier - come on cheer up!
Review 86:Good value accommodation for a business traveller on a budget. Ample parking, good beer, not quite walking distance to Llangollen, but food there if you want it
Review 87:first room was very dusty, 2nd room even worse bathroom was disgusting, bed was broken and room generally looked uncleaned/hoovered etc, also looked like a resident mouse had been nibbling at the paintwork on the door!! This may have been a 3 star hotel 20 years ago but definitely is in need of some tlc !!
Review 88:We where booked to check in for 2 pm.The hotel was short staffed with just one woman running reception and bar and serving food.It was a two hour wait before our room was ready. So had to change our plans for the day, which was a shame as we only had one night .
Review 89:Great location .Very peaceful . Food was lovely. Short walk into llangollan.Ample parking.
Review 90:breakfast was delightfull room cosy and warm loved the decor staff was helpfull food was good a bit slow but expect this as cooked fresh chef was very helpfull could help youself to cerials ect
Review 91:Over bath shower very difficult to use.Bath cold water tap knob fell off
Review 92:Good location, mountain views, spacious, comfortable, clean and tidy. Beautiful area.
Review 93:The grounds were quite untidy - rubbish lying around. The decor is very dated and room facilities were not ideal (no shower curtain!) but clean and tidy inside.
Review 94:The staff were relaxed and friendly. The outdoor kids play area was excellent! The (family) room was spacious with great views. The atmosphere in the Bar was lovely.
Review 95:Was loud music until 1 15 am . . Shame because every thing else was lovely food room scenery . . . But no chance of any sleep until music in bar stops
Review 96:The bed was most uncomfortable, the mattress needs changing as all the springs were shot - woke up in agony in the morning as have bad back anyway! the mould was unsightly in the bathroom. Breakfast was extremely slow and we had to wait 40 minutes for some toast.
Review 97:the beer brewed on site was very good
Review 98:Nothing
Review 99:We arrived for one night room was large with lovely views of the hills . Staff and owners were friendly. Wanted to stay another night but fully booked. Breakfast very nice. Well worth the money we paid.
Review 100:turned up - no heating in room, but small heater was made available. Heater could have been put in room prior to our arrival - heating fine thereafter. Breakfast was good, but my wife noticed a funny taste from her tea - looked inside the pot of hot water and there was a layer of fatty grease inside - disgusting. We complained to the 'happy breakfast maid' you've read about in earlier reviews and no apology or shock, just "would you like more water". We knew about dated décor, but bathroom very poor - shower attached to taps, but nowhere to hang it from the wall!! Very slow water flow for the bath on day one, on day two it was even slower and lukewarm. I don't know if the lady who serves breakfast is either very rude, very shy or just indifferent to customers, but it's the closest I've got to staying at Fawlty Towers. I will never stay there again under current ownership.
Review 101:Location great, breakfast great....but see didn't like too
Review 102:On arrival registration seemed to take an age. There was no welcome or indeed an offer to help me with my luggage to my room. I had to pay the bill upfront. The shower was over the bath but did not work.. The central heating also did not work. the hotel was stone cold both in temperature and attitude. I do not recommend The Abbey Grange at all
Review 103:nothing
Review 104:The heating was non existant. It was a very cold day and I expected to have a warm room. The lack of heating ruined my stay . I couldnt get away fast enough, did not use shower because it was so cold. Will never use this b & b again.
Review 105:NOTHING!!!
Review 106:Central heating didn't work but the did provide a heater in the end. Bed uncomfortable. Old place in need of re furb.
Review 107:Location good. Breakfast fine. For what you pay it just about passes.
Review 108:Was unable to have an early breakfast on the Saturday. No breakfast before 8.30 apparently. :-(
Review 109:Amazed to find hotel has onsite brewery producing some fine real ales.
Review 110:The twin beds pushed together to make a double (gap in middle very uncomfortable) in room 6, Need some sound proofing, could hear people talking very clearly in corridor.
Review 111:Staff were friendly on arrival and helpfully with a special food request.
Review 112:Room was tired, noisy floorboards from the room next door every time the occupant even breathed! Not exactly a warm welcome.
Review 113:Price, location, easy parking.
Review 114:No bad experience, but rather disappointed that there was no fixture over the bath for the shower. So there was no choice of bath or shower.
Review 115:Clean and welcoming. Excellent breakfast. Room lovely and warm. Beautiful bedding
Review 116:The staff were not friendly. We went out for dinner rather than stay with her. Breakfast started at 8:30am so we couldn't have any as my partner had to leave then for work.
Review 117:The room was retro vintage a 4 poster bed is rare these days
Review 118:I can't really fault my stay at this Hotel. Thoroughly pleased.
Review 119:Menu Excellent. Food Excellent. Nice friendly Staff. I will stay again. Very Pleased. Excellent Value for Money especially when compared to other Hotels in the vicinity.
Review 120:The staff were miserable, especially the woman who served us our breakfast. The rooms are quite small. Everytime we went out the reception door there was either chickens or one of two of the peacocks there in the way or following us to the car. We were disappointed when we wanted a shower as it was just a bath and a shower head, who wants to shower while holding the shower head?! Would never return to this hotel as it was a poor experience and not one to remember. After all the poor reviews on the food we went against eating in the hotel and visited a different hotel 2 minutes up the road to eat, and the staff were lovely and the food was fantastic. Wouldn't recommend
Review 121:The room itself was clean and the bed was comfy. The breakfast was also nice. The only good thing about the whole night was the fact there was free wifi to entertain ourselves.
Review 122:There was no heating in room, hot water wasn't that hot, dead wasps on floor, TV didn't work, breakfast could of been better, staff need a customer care course on how to greet people. The room was freezing during the night
Review 123:My sons liked the playground and the animas roaming around
Review 124:Wi fi not always reliably active.
Review 125:The location of the hotel was idyllic. Staff friendly and welcoming. Food excellent. Clean comfortable rooms and facilities and an excellent choice of ales.
Review 126:The extra cost of the dogs was not included in the price when booking and was only added on when we had arrived at hotel. An additional unexpected cost.
Review 127:Bar food good. Rooms nicely decorated. Good views. Ample parking.
Review 128:Certainly some of the decor is dated, ( 'though, for us, that simply added to the charm of the place ! ). And the Management were also tired ( after the long slog of Christmas & New Year ). Visit with a critical mindset & you'll soon find fault. Despite the hotel's shortcomings we resolved to approach our brief stay there positively. We weren't disappointed & very much hope we will have opportunity to stay there again.
Review 129:Abbey Grange Hotel is a fine old building in a lovely setting with good parking facilities approx. 2 miles from Llangollen. We loved our 1 night there ( as did our 2 labradors ! ) enjoying good food & drinks at very acceptable prices.
Review 130:one of the landing lights kept coming on, by itself and the cost of three packs of crisps, some nuts and 3 cans of pop from the bar cost us over £8.
Review 131:I loved Owain the African grey parrot, and the peacocks, they entertained the kids and me just nicely . Rooms are very nice, breakfast plenty, and building is in great location not far from chapel ruins, which were free to enter on a Sunday.
Review 132:The hotel is situated 5mins drive from the town in a rural location with great views. Unfortunately the hotel is dated and uncared for. Customer service is very poor. The female breakfast assistant on 29th December was rude. The bar is expensive for what it offers £17 for bottle wine. Bedrooms/ bathroons are dirty.
Review 133:Rural location with mountain views
Review 134:The staff were rude, the whole place was filthy! And I mean filthy! The room was aged, broken and dangerous. The sockets were overloaded and aged too with loose wires. The bath and surrounding tiles were full of black and orange mould. The light was broken, the bed had hairs in it, the bed was a four poster that was broken and had been glued together, it swayed when you sat in it. The bed curtains were covered in a black damp mould and smelt of damp too, of course. It was freezing cold, the heating was off!, I asked to use the oil heater on the landing and they said they would turn the heating on ....they did but it was tepid! The toilet flush was poor, I suspect they are on a meter and have reduced the tank flow...it was so dirty that I didn't want to lift the tank lid to see. The towels had clearly been used before and the bin was full! The view from the window overlooked the drive/storage area which had a feeling of dialling banjos !! The LLangollen Brewery works from there ...I dread to think! The taxi driver felt the staff treatment of me and another guest was because we weren't welsh !? They offer free wifi ...ha...no wifi except in the dining area, which they lock off during the day ! Didn't work in my room. No mobile signal either. Needed to book a cab to come home ( I can't drive due to epilepsy) ...explained about signal - was told to walk down to the houses ( about 1/3 mile away) to the public phone - this is at night on the dangerous road ! Just plain rude and disrespectful and inhumane. It was an awful experience . I was actually quite frightened during the night, it had a very imposing atmosphere. Awful, just awful. I suspect it's closing and the brewery is taking over, hence their lack if care. Stay away !
Review 135:The location although the road was dangerous for walking along, no pavement
Review 136:On one of the days a lady serving us was not friendly did not took our order properly
Review 137:We had breakfast and dinner..food was excellent. Nice place to stay and enjoy Wales.
Review 138:Worst experience ever. Smelly rooms. No staff on premises all morning. No (pre-paid for) breakfast was served and we received no apology. Most unfriendly staff.
Review 139:Room was very tired. Carpet had been cleaned with highly-scented cleaner and had not been vacuumed up properly - still visible in the carpet. The powerful scent felt unhealthy and unpleasant. The double bed was fine but the single bed was awful - I could feel the springs digging into my back. It was difficult to regulate the temperature of the room. Some noise from cars outside the room and nearby roosters also noisy (although not the hotel's fault). Would not stay again.
Review 140:pleasant location and good breakfast
Review 141:When I arrived the staff were lovely, took time to show me to my room and carry my bag . The food was really nice on both evenings and nothing was to much trouble .
