Reviews for The Royal Hotel
Review 1:No hot water in the morning for a shower or bath as the hot water system had broken. No heating in the bathroom but heating worked in the room. All this in a week of snow and cold conditions.
Review 2:Staff.
Review 3:Upon arrival no staff to greet us, had to look for members of staff to check in, no hot water in evening and was told to be patient after calling reception on several occasions.Room was damp and cold and very dated, no duvet just old sheets. Noisy music from premise next door. Breakfast wasn't very nice and not many options to choose from eg fruit, pastries etc
Review 4:Friendly staff View of river
Review 5:Damp smelling reception with uninspiring staff. Dirty room, uninspiring jaded decor with stained mattress base and ancient dusty / stained lampshades. Mouldy bathroom, mildewed shower curtain, reluctant hot water, dribble of water for a shower. Noisy cleaning staff first thing in the morning. Cold plates at breakfast, no fresh fruit. Hard to find positives.
Review 6:Location
Review 7:As explained in the first question. Also it was very very noisy as we were on the main road.
Review 8:The breakfast was amazing and the waiter was very polite and accommodating.we did find the room cold on arrival and had to put the portable radiator on also the bathroom was freezing as the heated towel rail didn't work.
Review 9:Our room was somewhat cold, as our visit was in December and the sash windows by the River Dee had to contend with the lower temperature outside and the higher one inside our room. It was a bit noisy at some point in the evenings on some nights, due to music from another business in the same building. We did not observe an leaflets in the hotel about attractions in Llangollen. The information package in our room was rather bare, with no information about menus served by the hotel, or eliciting users views. The hotel had no entertainment, except for the restaurant
Review 10:The setting of the hotel by the side of the River Dee, the 14th century Bridge across it and in the centre of Llangollen makes it a great location. We did not have dinner at the hotel, but we had breakfast, which was very good and the staff were all professional and courteous in attending to us. The restaurant experience was very enjoyable, with lovely classical music.
Review 11:No mobile (as per the much of Llangollen) signal but wifi also limited to Public areas. Limited hot water for shower/bath
Review 12:Beautiful location bedroom & breakfast room overlooking river. Room was spacious and bed comfortable
Review 13:Breakfast was very basic - would have been nice to have had proper butchers bacon & sausages as we felt they were basic supermarket stuff!
Review 14:Location and there was a nice atmosphere
Review 15:Not keen on the sheets and blankets bedding arrangement, but all was clean and comfortable.
Review 16:Lovely building, conveniently located with parking and good views of the river. Good breakfast.
Review 17:Had to go out to eat in evening. Loose toilet seat and not always somebody on reception.
Review 18:Great breakfast, good quality food well cooked on hot plates just as it should be.
Review 19:We intiially had a room overlooking the street-beware,the town hall clock bongs every hour-ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT! We had to change rooms as we had had little sleep.
Review 20:Breakfasts were good with a lovely view of the river
Review 21:The hot water was not working in the morning, so we could not shower. I went to reception to be told that the 'maintenance' man was working on it. Water was still not on after breakfast so we had to check out without showers.
Review 22:Location and mostly excellent, we paid for a deluxe room and it was excellent.
Review 23:Room was nice and comfortable looked over the street towards the bridge, a lovely view of the river but a better view from the dining room. As I was travelling for work it was a shame breakfast did not open half an hour earlier. Overall had a very comfortable stay.
Review 24:No in house restaurant open for evening meals. Room was cold and dark with old fashioned dark brown wardrobe. At check out at 9.00 a.m. waited 5 minutes and then had to search for someone to come to desk for us and another guest
Review 25:location and breakfast
Review 26:A little tired, light bulbs not working, mattress in need of updating
Review 27:Good breakfasts, excellent location, friendly staff. Nice and warm. Rooms quite solid so little noise (apart from the river)
Review 28:Staff should be more smartly dressed, whole hotel is in need of refurbishment, cooked breakfast too greasy and not cooked to order, clock in nearby tower chimes every hour.
Review 29:It's in the centre of Llangollen and parking is free.
Review 30:I'd upgraded from the standard double as it was our 10th anniversary. When seeing the room I was a little disappointed as I didn't really feel I was receiving value for money and couldn't see any sign of upgrade from the normal standard double in any other hotels I have visited other than cushions and a sofa. Tiny TV and full sized kettle that you couldn't fit under the tap to fill! Attention to detail required!!!! The room was on the front so noisy at night with no view. Staff gave me keys to a room overlooking the river - the views were amazing, but the room was a family room with three beds in, a step up/down (can't remember) to the bathroom and nowhere to sit other than the beds, apparently this was an upgraded room also! Such a shame rally as I'd spend three days prior to that in a hotel in Chester, costing me less for three nights than at the Royal for two - so sticks in the throat a bit and next year will probably go B & B as some of these look lovely and a bit more upmarket than the royal, although to be honest there appears to be a lot a refurbishment going on so who knows when they've finished it may be great.
Review 31:The staff were amazing. Always ready to help where possible and cheerful. How they managed that as you saw the same staff first thing as last thing. The breakfasts were awesome!
Review 32:Parking tight when busy but always squeezed in. Read a review that reception smelled damp but a wall was being re-plastered in bar so hopefully will fix that.
Review 33:Excellent central location, free parking across the road, excellent service at breakfast and friendly, polite cleaning staff. River view. Plenty to see in walking distance.
Review 34:There was nothing we didn't like about our stay at The Royal
Review 35:Friendly, comfortable hotel in a central location and room had a great view of the River Dee
Review 36:the room and some areas of the hotel are a bit dated and tired, but perfectly adequate for our stay.
Review 37:excellent location. friendly staff. lovely breakfast.
Review 38:The location was fantastic, the hotel was fine although looking tired. Beautiful building but lacking care. The rooms were clean with plenty of tea/coffee etc. Staff were pleasant and attentive, the breakfast was plentiful and very tasty, which set you up for the day ahead.we were asked if we required more tea and coffee on several occasions. The staff were clean and well groomed. Throughout the hotel there were lovely features e.g. flowers artwork etc. No bad experiences although the hotel looks a little tired and in need of redecoration ...
Review 39:No evening meal on premises
Review 40:Every thing very good location room beds excellent staff wonderful very polite breakfast fantastic views from Windows wonderful
Review 41:Hotel basic enough and a bit jaded Slightly chaotic service wise but hard to find any intentional faults
Review 42:Great location in centre of town for our trip on Llangollen railway for Day out with Thomas. Family room was fine for small children. Bathroom basic but spotless. Breakfast staff a bit stressed but helpful and pleasant
Review 43:The room was cold but clean, the only downside is that the hotel needs a refurb. I think they are addressing this as work was in progress in the bar area. Look forward to seeing the progress in 2016.
Review 44:Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent. The hotel is in a superb location with an excellent view of the river Dee.
Review 45:Like anywhere in Llangollen parking is always difficult but just managed to get a car park spot, more parking would be advantageous
Review 46:The staff were friendly, an excellent breakfast, lovely views of the river dee, I had stayed at this hotel and was disappointed by the cleanliness but I can honestly say I couldn't be more impressed with the last stay I had
Review 47:Not a very friendly welcome on arrival . Heavy blankets on bed.
Review 48:Quiet location of room within the hotel , as requested. Tea /coffee making facilities in room. Convenient location to stay, for Oswestry Hospital appointment.
Review 49:Welcome at Reception poor. Requested lower floor room - found room was located with steps to climb. Restaurant closed at 3pm - only open at lunchtime - no evening meal provision. Car Park sited opposite hotel - no clear signage. with directions. Not one member of staff asked if everything had been satisfactory with our stay when checking out. Room was located on front of hotel - very noisy. This was our first stay here.
Review 50:Excellent location Good breakfast - efficient and friendly restaurant staff
Review 51:I expected a lot more for my money in terms of room size even though I know it is an old building. The windows weren't wasp proof and we were disturbed by one the size of a small dog at midnight. Our visit was later in the year so you really felt the cold if you're out of bed. Also before we had even used the bed I noticed some kind of chocolate stain on the top cover.
Review 52:The breakfast (full English) was amazing and we were allowed to check out at eleven. The shower was really warm!
Review 53:Firmer bed. Better quality sausage at breakfast. Air fresheners in stairwell.
Review 54:Amazing location at the heart of Llangollen. Good parking facilities, waiting service and breakfast.
Review 55:The TV was the size of a postage stamp and could not be seen from the double bed.
Review 56:Just off Offa's Dyke path and beautiful view across the River Dee and the bridge.
Review 57:Not a lot of car parking spaces. Room I was in needed upgrading and a good clean. Another member of the party had a stunning room.
Review 58:Good location in town centre
Review 59:The heating did not come on until around 6pm even though it was cold so the room was very cold when we arrived. No evening meals available in the hotel.
Review 60:Breakfasts were very good. The view from the room and decking of the river
Review 61:The breakfast took over half an hour but when it did come it was lovely
Review 62:I thought this hotel was a lovely place to stay and as we are only a young couple it's wasn't too dear either, that staff were always happy and helpful and the room was very clean and tidy when we arrived
Review 63:Part of hotel we stayed in was dirty the doors in between stairs and corridors black with grime beds had hairs in them bathroom dirty hairs in bath
Review 64:N/a
Review 65:1. The turret suite is advertised as modern, it might have been in the 50-60s not now the wing chairs and settee needs reupholstering and a decent TV would be good. 2. The bath towels were more like hand towels, the bath tap did not function so we could only shower. 3. The restraunt was not open in the evening, not good after a long drive there! 4.we had originally booked for the 6th and 7th then changed to the 7th and 8th giving three days notice. On returning home I checked my bank account to find that W Hotels had taken £110 from my account and we had already paid £220 on checkout. I rang the W hotel a number of times only to get an answer phone message. I then rang the Royal and they denied all knowledge of W Hotels, then they said they would refund the £110 !!!! very strange!!! 5. All very poor value for money.
Review 66:Excellent location giving an up lose view of the bridge and the river
Review 67:The whole Hotel experience, Location, Atmosphere, Cleanliness of accommodation, Quality facilities and standard of our room. Comfortable and cosy, plenty of hot water both bath and shower. Tea and coffee biscuit's in the room. High quality of our breakfast, fantastic portions. Friendly and efficient staff.
Review 68:No lift. Room looks tired but clean. Windows needed a scrub from mould. Breakfast OK but not very tasty with watery poached eggs and tasteless scrambled eggs.
Review 69:Central location, view of river and bridge and street scene. Good size room with comfortable bed, entrance hall welcoming. Dining room spacious and nicely painted.Staff pleasant.
Review 70:When I booked I requested vegetarian breakfast. It was the same as the meat breakfast but with the bacon and sausage left off! I think quorn or soya sausages could be offered as an alternative.
Review 71:Position of hotel excellent, had river views. Our room was spotless. Staff friendly and helpful. It was relaxing and I would visit again.
Review 72:I had requested a superior double room over looking the river and this is what we received. The hotel has a massive history and character. Well worth the money.
Review 73:no bad experience but didn't like the small 'vulnerable' car park and the dirty sacks of 'rubbish' inside the gate, which I had to move in order to find a parking space !! the entrance toilet to the right looked 'dirty' ?
Review 74:Friendly helpful staff. Good food
Review 75:Hole in the sheet and dirty carpets around the edges.
Review 76:The Older gentleman on reception was very friendly and pleasant. Very nice breakfast and good service.
Review 77:It is in a poor state of decoration, and cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Rooms were very damp - including the bed. Windows were black with mould as was the bathroom. Carpets were dirty and the ceiling in the lounge had collapsed (to be fair, it was being repaired).
Review 78:Good location and parking facilities. Cheap rates. Good food.
Review 79:State of bar and toilets currently being refurbished. No restaurant available in evening. Poor facilities within room and cleanliness
Review 80:Lovely location with out side space and river views. Staff friendly and accommodating
Review 81:Advertised as having parking. When we got there the car park could only accommodate about 20 cars and it was full. Staff said we could park outside until 9am but road was also full. Had to drive around for 20 minutes looking for parking
Review 82:The view from our window was lovely overlooking the river
Review 83:Empty lorries rattling past early in the morning
Review 84:The room was very spacious with nice high ceiling. Good size breakfast quickly served by excellent staff
Review 85:The only downfall is that there was no lifts and it was a struggle getting to the second floor
Review 86:Staff was lovely , rooms were ok , the location was central close to shops and bars
Review 87:bed a little creaky
Review 88:staff were friendly and very helpful, especially as left bank card at home! Breakfast was wonderful and the views from the restaurant were excellent.
Review 89:Hotel could do with a deep clean as windows and nets were dirty. Cleaner's put fresh bedding on floors outside rooms when changing over. Should have a trolley. However the rest was clean.
Review 90:Staff were very willing to help, they obviously took pride in their jobs.
Review 91:Room was very small, when first walked in the room it had a strong smell of damp, bed was old and broken and sank in the middle not very comfortable, room was extremely dated
Review 92:Very please t staff excellent food
Review 93:Great location overlooking the River Dee.All the staff we encountered were friendly and courteous. The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was lovely. What's not to like? :-)
Review 94:Before we arrived we got a phone call checking we were still going. I was informed that we were getting a double room and twin room instead of the two double rooms I booked in July. We arrived early 1.40 pm and asked if we could book in but were told no, 2.00 pm. The receptionist was rude and unhelpful and the hotel was freezing cold. The plus side was breakfast was good. Wont go back again
Review 95:I liked the location, it was perfect
Review 96:It was a little expensive but as it was a late booking I did not have any choice, my fault.
Review 97:Reasonably sized and very clean room. Towels changed daily. Very quiet despite being in the centre of town.
Review 98:No evening meals, car park over the road (less secure ?) Clock bonging all night across the road.
Review 99:Close to some good food sources, room a good size, very good breakfast, well cooked and served.
Review 100:Hard uncomfortable bed, seemed to be on a slant.
Review 101:Beautiful river views, lovely breakfast, attentive staff. Very attractive old building. Free parking. Large superior room with lovely old bay windows
Review 102:The hotel needs badly refurbishing, the bed was most uncomfortable, you could feel every spring. The rooms are dated and need a good clean. The hotel is shabby throughout.
Review 103:The location of the hotel is ideal, close to all amenities and car park provided is a bonus. I enjoyed the breakfast meal.
Review 104:We were disappointed with the room. We paid for a "superior" room but it didn't feel superior. The bathroom and bedding were clean but the room was in need of decoration. The room was nothing like the picture and comments on line.
Review 105:We had a room facing the river.
Review 106:Perfect spot for short break in Lovely well maintained hotel with some charming original features. Staff pleasant and helpful. Breakfast choices excellent. Location very pretty.
Review 107:Perfect location right by the River and close to the steam train station. The Hotel is old but fairly well maintained and was very peaceful and comfortable.
Review 108:Noisy drinkers right outside on the balcony outside the room window until 11pm. The sausages in the cooked breakfast let down what was otherwise a good breakfast.
Review 109:The view from the room. The dual aspect view over the river was lovely. The helpful receptionist and the advice to walk up to the old ruined castle was most appreciated.
Review 110:I was there in the middle of September and my room was very cold at night. Some people would be happy with this, but not me.
Review 111:Excellent location, some rooms with great view to the river, or the heritage railway station. Historical hotel with charm. Perfectly clean room, spacious and pleasant. Good breakfast.
Review 112:We booked at the last minute so the only room was close to the street with a fair bit of street noise. It was leading into the weekend so I guess a bit of noise was expected. A river view would have been fantastic.
Review 113:Great location in a really nice town. The hotel backs onto a scenic river. The room was pretty big.
Review 114:Our room had a a beautiful view of the river Dee and bridge, The double bed was very comfy and had brew making facilities which i was pleased about. The Hotel was in the centre of Llangollen and reserved parking across the road. Recepion staff were very helpful and the breakfast was outstanding. I would recommend The Royal as value for money and we would use this again when we next visit the area.
Review 115:Not bad but very disappointed we booked as booking.com said parking butweonly managed one overnight park in hotel carpark rest of time we hadto parl away from hotel and pay for it ....and worry it would be ok
Review 116:Locality, staff, our beautiful spacious double aspect riversideroom.waiting staff
Review 117:Rooms are tired. Mattresses are worn out. The springs kept digging in my back all night long. Bathroom really needs updating. Not much variety of beers in the bar.
Review 118:Great location with river views. Good breakfast.
Review 119:breakfast was very lengthy, had eaten toast before the breakfast came we asked for more but none came they said they had run out of hash browns but when breakfast came it was the mushrooms that was missing. waiter had dirty crumpled trousers and his shirt was not tucked in didn't look smart.
Review 120:the hotel was situated perfectly for all amenities the reception staff were very helpful and friendly and the bed was very comfortable
Review 121:Foisty smell in reception rooms; use of blankets; limited parking space; curtain rail needing repair; washbasin plug (pop-up) required adjustment but was too yucky; mildewed shower curtain; tiny tv to view across big room; insufficient drawers for family of 4; mattress too soft.
Review 122:Breakfast; big room with view over river; pleasant staff
Review 123:Location is amazing...with a wonderful balcony right over the white water of the River Dee...stunning. In very short walking distance of the tourist steam train. Staff were EXCELLENT...a real joy to stay there
Review 124:No access other than stairs, I had a 22 month old with me and it became very difficult with the stairs to our room and again to the restaurant. The access to the reception too was a very narrow door, no one offered any help to our room. And the car park was opposite the hotel again no help was offered with luggage.
Review 125:The location was unbeatable.
Review 126:No restaurant for evening meal. Rooms need updating and the bathrooms.noisy room overlooking road and street lights shone into room.
Review 127:Big room, comfy bed nice linen and towels. Position of hotel ideal with beautiful views over the river
Review 128:The view from the room was stunning. The room was very spacious and it made a nice change to have sheets and blankets instead of a duvet. Lovely characterful old building beautifully maintained :-)
Review 129:Pleasant historic hotel located on the banks of the Dee River in charming village of Llangollen. Generous English breakfast served in elegant dining room.
Review 130:We booked a single room that was in need of cleaning and total refurbishment. The double room we booked was absolutely fine though.
Review 131:Good breakfast. Great location.
Review 132:Hotel was very dated and in need of decoration. Cleanliness of bathroom should of been better, a lot of other peoples hair in both Sink and Bath plug holes.
Review 133:Great Location and Town. Staff were friendly.
Review 134:Stairs everywhere - no lift (No warning of this on advertisement - one of my group was 84 years old and walks with a stick; she struggled)
Review 135:Lovely hotel, good location, great feeling of history
Review 136:Breakfast waiter forgot about asking us about cooked breakfast until we reminded him - no problem as the cooked breakfast was delivered promptly after that!
Review 137:Location very nice, friendly staff, large bedroom overlooking the High Street but a bit noisy but not your fault!
Review 138:Room a little tired looking and very noisy (not great soundproofing). A little expensive based on facilities.
Review 139:Room spacious but was hoping for river view (but understand this is the luck of the draw). Room a little tired looking for a £99 per night charge. Hotel good location. Breakfast good. Staff helpful.
