Reviews for Stratton House Hotel
Review 1:TV from next room very loud during evening and early morning - pleased I had earplugs! Restaurant not open and bar not incredibly comfy with poor lighting.
Review 2:Room was large and comfortable- bed very comfy. Loads of hot water. Hot choc on offer in rooms and used fairtrade tea. Bar meal was reasonable price and food. Receptionist very friendly.
Review 3:The overall ambience was wonderful, took us back in time with the oldy worldy christmas decor The best dining experience ever, compliments to the chef, presentation was amazing and the flavours wow! The dining room waitress was so efficient and had a lovely personality which enhanced our special meal out. We would highly recommend staying here when visiting the cotswolds Next time we will take our little dog as they are welcomed if well behaved and allowed everywhere except the dining room so if like us you adore your pet, give them a treat too. Reception staff and porter were exceptionally helpful bright and cheerful, nothing was too much trouble. We will be back
Review 4:The hotel looks very tired, with parts decorated like an old people's home from the 1980s. Our shower needed replacing as it was worn out. The whole place could really do with an update very soon. The food was terrible. Had Xmas dinner and all of the veg was raw.
Review 5:The bed was very comfortable and the room was nice & warm.
Review 6:There was never anybody on bar. So we had to ring the bell every time we wanted a drink and neither bar staff looked very welcoming when they had to surface.
Review 7:The staff were great. Particularly the receptionist. She was lovely.
Review 8:Sleep was interrupted by people from a function taking place in hotel returning to rooms after midnight, banging on doors, kids running up and down corridor, etc. Hotel bar for other residents shut at 11.00 :-( Breakfast buffet was OK but not worth £10 per person in my opinion.
Review 9:Location, proximity to Cirencester and access to motorway. Good number of rooms available.
Review 10:The waitress hair was mostly tied up but she still had long black hair hanging from the sides. Not ideal for serving food. Having to pay extra for breakfast.
Review 11:we had an evening meal, and it was of a very good standard better than I had expected having read otherv reviews
Review 12:I liked the location, being the nearest hotel to the M5 (we had driven from Glasgow) but close to Cirencester, and the history of the building, as the main part was Jacobean. It was in a quiet area but within easy reach of the town and the venue for the wedding we were attending. I appreciated that a single room for my nephew was available at short notice, especially as my sister and I had booked our room months ago.
Review 13:I had mistakenly thought breakfast was included (I had asked about times at check in, so could have been advised at that point) However, we were presented with a bill for £20.00 although my son had only had a bowl of weetabix and a coffee! This seemed a bit steep! I think the receptionist should have waived the cost of one breakfast at least given our obvious mistake.
Review 14:It was clean and the room was comfortable but very gloomy!
Review 15:Staff were a little too gung-ho coming into the room to deliver room service...wait for the invite!
Review 16:Breakfast, perfect wifi, dog bowl and food...above and beyond
Review 17:The rooms are not cleaned very well. There's dust everywhere and stains on the carpet. The shower head in our room was useless. Staff are not very efficient.
Review 18:It's approx a 20 min walk from the hotel into Cirencester town which I didn't mind as it's a nice walk. The walled garden is very nice.
Review 19:Not the most central location in the town, about a mile outside on the old Gloucester Road, a comfortable 20-minute walk if you don't have a car. Our rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the buffet breakfast was reasonable enough. Dinner was a fixed-price option which we thought was a little pricey, so we ate in the nice little rustic pub next door, which also serves some fine Arkells beer.
Review 20:Plumbing in shower. Reported on leaving so should be fixed for next guests.
Review 21:A large noisy groups last night, was our only night. Friendly reception. Good size room. bathroom mostly worked. We chose not to eat in the restaurant for dinner (because of large coach party group) and we left before breakfast.
Review 22:Roof leaked over the stairs. Breakfast staff were willing but seemed not used to customers. We were advised by customers on the next table that we should get our cutlery and other needs ourselves as the staff would be unaware that we wanted to eat with them. They were right.
Review 23:Comfortable bedroom
Review 24:No hot water for a shower in the morning, however we were able to use the bath with no problem.
Review 25:Good location to further explore the Cotswolds,. Short walk into Cirencester.
Review 26:We specifically asked for a double room and got twin beds, when challenged on this, the receptionist argued the case. The room was an updated one with 2 windows but was very dark. The beds and pillows were so hard, it felt like I was sleeping on a road whilst resting my head on the kerb. We did not attempt breakfast or dinner but went elsewhere.
Review 27:After a 4 hour journey, it gave us somewhere to base ourselves.
Review 28:Comfort of room.lovely large and fluffy towels.friendly and helpful staff especially the receptionist.,who was lovely! The garden was beautifully kept.over all every thing was great. Thank you.
Review 29:Could do with a bit of a upgrade in terms of decor and furniture but it is what it is.
Review 30:Well organised. Nice gardens and location. Friendly staff. Food was amazing!
Review 31:Unfortunately, our stay coincided with a coach party from Germany. The restaurant struggled to cope at breakfast time, hence the low mark given for breakfast.
Review 32:The location of the hotel was good with plenty of parking spaces. Our room was spacious and nicely decorated.
Review 33:We had a good experience, but woukd have been happier without the local radio station intruding on an otherwise peaceful breakfast. The choice was ill suited to the clientele.
Review 34:The staff were so pleasant and helpful and the outlook from the dining area on to the gardens was delightful.
Review 35:We tried to book two taxis when we were staying - one at 3pm on a saturday afternoon and another at 9am on a Sunday morning. We were unable to get a taxi and had to make other arrangements, luckily we knew someone who was staying at the hotel who gave us a lift. If you need to go anywhere you have to book a taxi well in advance. Shower was hot but not very good water pressure.
Review 36:nice room, large bathroom, comfy bed.
Review 37:The room was quite noisy - we could hear the conversations of people in the rooms adjacent/above.
Review 38:Very friendly staff who went out of their way to help us with an early check-in prior to a wedding.
Review 39:Not as such a bad experience but there was no smile from reception on arrival and no 'did you have a nice stay ?' on departure. Positive staff training needed ? BUT the good far outweighed the not so good!
Review 40:Large car park. Very nice breakfast. Room was large and comfortable - very nice garden. Excellent tea and coffee making facility and good toiletries.
Review 41:The room was very dark even on a bright afternoon. Used tea cups had not been replaced from previous occupant. Dirty tablecloth at breakfast
Review 42:Location was very good. Very quiet hotel. Breakfast choice good and hot.
Review 43:Very friendly staff, very polite and helpful. Attentive and chatty, without being over familiar. Respectful without being subservient. All in all, just the right tone that one would expect. Excellent food and a well stocked bar, so dinner was a pleasure. Excellent breakfast in very nice surroundings. Will be my hotel of choice from now on, when in the area.
Review 44:Would probably say the decor a little tired throughout hotel and needs a freshening up. Rooms weren't hoovered during the stay. Shower in bathroom not wonderful.Curtain in room torn.
Review 45:A good location. Grounds very nice. Liked character of hotel. Good size bedrooms.
Review 46:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 47:Friendly, knowledgeable staff, made us feel we were at home, breakfast was excellent, being able to have your own choice, not a set menu. Hotel and garden was outstanding.
Review 48:We ordered a sandwich at the bar when we arrived and despite there only appearing to be 2 others eating, it took over half an hour to arrive. We could only gobble it down instead of enjoying it. It was very tasty!
Review 49:Our room was made available to us earlier than normal which was greatly appreciated and enabled us to change after travelling for the wedding
Review 50:Shower in bathroom was very poor
Review 51:Our hotel room was beautiful and old fashioned in a lovely way - evening food (extra charge) was amazing as was the breakfast
Review 52:You have to recognise that an old house turned into an hotel will have some rooms better than others - the luck of the draw unless you are regulars.
Review 53:Excellent attentive staff, relaxed atmosphere, old world charm, excellent food.
Review 54:although my parents rooms was huge ours was very cramped, badly lit & noise from fans outside kept waking us up .... generally could really do with a bit of love!
Review 55:Lovely lady at breakfast sorted us out with tasty croissants & bar had nice ambiance
Review 56:It had something of an old people's home about it. The shower needed replacing and the water was luke warm at best.
Review 57:It was a lovely old building with interesting history.
Review 58:The lady at the front desk ought to be more friendly, approachable and helpful. We asked her couple of times about what to do in Cirencester and she gave a one line brief reply and kept pointing us to the rack of brochures and maps. We wanted first hand info from a local which is why we asked her but she wasn't interested in giving any.
Review 59:The hotel turned out to be bigger than I expected. Decent rooms and the hotel has free parking. Didn't have breakfast but the spread was decent. Other reviews may say rooms are tired and need a make over but I didnt think so.
Review 60:Maybe slightly extended breakfast times? Just so it's possible to have a week time lie in!
Review 61:The value for money was excellent, as was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the room we stayed in was lovely, dinner and breakfast was fantastic overall a really good experience
Review 62:The hotel unfortunately is very tired with white paint that has yellowed and grounds that need much attention. I do not think the hotel has seen much in the way of decoration for the past 10 years or more. The bathrooms are also old fashioned but reasonably clean althouth there is mould in the tile grouting...
Review 63:The location is excellent just outside Cirencester and ideal for a quiet time.
Review 64:The hotel needs updating inside, our room was like it was stuck in the 1980's, just to paint over the walls white would have made a lot of difference
Review 65:The location was very good, we could walk into town and it was a lovely walk by the stream. Staff were very friendly and we had breakfast in a lovely room overlooking the gardens
Review 66:More staff are needed, the hotel was very busy during our stay and having 3 people on during the breakfast times wasn't enough. They couldn't cater for us on 3 of the nights during our stay as we were only b&b and were told that if we had been half board they would have had to fit us in?? The armchairs in the lounge and dining chairs in the restaurant really needed re-upholstering, some of them were really uncomfortable (general updating should be at the top of the agenda), and finally the gardens really were neglected.
Review 67:The hotel was great, lovely character, clean and the staff were very friendly. The lounge area had plenty of room to sit and relax (much better than sitting in your room).
Review 68:Found this Hotle by Chance, we had a very spacious room (no 8) with a four poster bed and were well catered for as was our Jack Russel. We will definitely go there again.
Review 69:this time the bed room was comfortable and well decorated but we felt a little closed in ,
Review 70:convenient for Cirencester and hotel comfortable the staff always attentive but not invasive .
Review 71:The only downside were the pillows - very hard, inflexible and not comfortable. A shame, because the beds themselves and the room were absolutely fine.
Review 72:The staff were very nice, and the hotel was clean, with good parking and a decent, if unexceptional, breakfast. The location is good, but a little difficult to find from Cirencester town centre - it looks straight, but all those one way streets are most confusing!
Review 73:The hotel could benefit from a 'face lift': i.e. while the bedroom appeared recently painted, the curtains and bedspread were jaded. The structure of the house is sound, so some cosmetic lift would greatly benefit the place.
Review 74:The location on the edge of the countryside is VG, and the walk into Cirencester was a pleasure.
Review 75:The only thing we would comment on is the fact the ensuite bathroom is outside the bedroom and includes a fire escape route !
Review 76:Staff were very pleasant and helpful. We chose the Bar food menu, which was excellent
Review 77:The Hotel could be so much more, it has beautiful gardens but the staff seem so unmotivated the bar is left unattended half of the time. No atmosphere in the hotel it was so quite.
Review 78:The good home cooked food at the pub next door great atmosphere
Review 79:Shower facility could have been better Beds were very soft and bouncy so not so comfortable Having stayed the previous year the breakfast was of a lower quality, especially eggs and sausages
Review 80:Reasonable price and facilities for Cheltenham festival week
Review 81:The staff charged me £50 more than the price stated, to cover what I might spend whilst i'm at the hotel... It is then returned a few days after you leave. That was £50 i couldn't spend in the Cotswolds.
Review 82:bed was comfortable but a bit small. no phone signal in the hotel. had to go outside to make a call. atmosphere at dinner could have been better. no background music
Review 83:gluten free diet
Review 84:Ambience of an old peoples home. Odd furniture, dusty fake flowers, dated and unecessary ornaments. Mis-matched decor throughout. Ate dinner here, stater of 'homemade pea and ham soup' had no texture and certainly no ham. Generally tired.
Review 85:Staff very friendly. Breakfast very good. Nice quiet location.
Review 86:Breakfast was ruined by the loud radio playing pop music and the staff shouting over the noise of the radio.
Review 87:The building and gardens are lovely. The room was clean and comfortable with nice toiletries and drinks making facilities.
Review 88:The hotel surpasses all others when it comes to dog-friendliness. It is very accommodating, even providing bowls and food for pooch! There were no histrionics when said pooch disgraced himself and shame-faced owners were not made to feel like social outcasts as a result. Top marks, Stratton House Hotel!
Review 89:The bar did not have any beer!! Communal areas very dated In need of refurb / modernisation Free WiFi offered but not actually able to pick up signal in bedroom
Review 90:Clean room Comfortable bed
Review 91:The TV in the room 26 next to ours (25) was attached to the partition wall. Our neighbour had the TV on until past 1 a.m. and we could hear every word from the TV and so got no sleep between 10.30 and 1 am. TV poorly located for sound purposes!
Review 92:Excellent breakfast. Nice staff.
Review 93:We didn't realise prior to booking that this hotel had not been a member of the Best Western network for more than two years. It is not the same place as it was then and we will not be returning.
Review 94:Ground floor room. Ample free parking. Quiet location yet close to main routes.
Review 95:Great location with comfortable accommodation. Very dog friendly including bowls and tinned food, a garden to use with disposal bin. Fantastic! Lovely public footpaths within a few yards of the hotel for 'walkies'. Will be returning!
Review 96:Bath not easy to get out of for older people.
Review 97:The room(8) was spacious with a 4-poster bed. The breakfast was great with plenty of choice and good service. Pleasant grounds.
Review 98:Only 1 small gripe was the distance from reception to our room with cases a bit of a route march
Review 99:Only stayed one night but staff were really nice and tried to make your stay as nice as possible. Breakfast was good and room was comfortable. Free WiFi was really good also
Review 100:Beds were a bit soft for our liking.
Review 101:The staff, including the chef, were extremely helpful. Grounds were lovely and the food is excellent. Decor was charming and bathrooms were large.
Review 102:Bar had two dummy beer pumps and served gassy beer from two separate taps. I suppose we should have stuck to bottled beer. Nice looking bar though.
Review 103:Good comfortable room ; wifi that worked well and good breakfast.
Review 104:It was a cold two days. The heating in one of the rooms are not working so rather chilly. Decorations rather dated. The room that was cold floor could do with a vacuuming before check in.
Review 105:Plenty of car parking. Easy access to places of interest. Reception staff are helpful. My room is warm and comfy. However, we had 2 rooms. The other one was not quite so good.
Review 106:Its a work in progress-not structurally but lots of small things.
Review 107:It is obvious that new owners/management are making strenuous efforts to improve the hotel and it presently offers vfm in a lovely character building. Stay now while it is still cheap
Review 108:The bathroom and the bedroom were a bit 'tired' but apparently there is updating of the rooms on the schedule, when that is completed - an excellent place to stay all-round
Review 109:The staff and the food - the staff were extremely helpful and friendly - the food was really good - we had an evening meal - excellent, especially as on a sunday night. Breakfast is fresh and plenty of choice.
Review 110:The meal on the second was very disappointing. I ordered the fillet of sea bass. It was filleted but very small and only half the fish. Also the service was pretty poor on this night.
Review 111:Free access to hotel computer which is a brilliant idea, well done.
Review 112:Surprised to find about seven young people standing outside the main entrance smoking and rather blocking the way as I got luggage in from the car. Perhaps just friends of a member of staff, but clouds of smoke right by the front door was unpleasant
Review 113:Staff, service and the beautiful walled garden which is very well maintained.
Review 114:Greeting on arrival could have been better.I was asked for credit card for pre authorisation which was not a problem. Was then told that amount authorised included £25 to cover any extras.Never had this before. On reading the folder in the room, discovered that there would be a charge of £2 for payment by credit card. This was not mentioned when booking in. Had I not have read the folder the £2 credit card charge would have been taken. I paid by debit card to avoid this.It would be a good idea for receptionist to advise payment conditions on arrival. Smacks a bit of sharp practice.
Review 115:Room (17) very good size with large bed, room and bathroom clean. Good selection for breakfast which was freshly cooked and served by efficient and friendly staff.
Review 116:Bar facilities poor, i.e. beer lines could do with cleaning. (beer was off and smelling) resulted in going down the road to a public house, and staff needed training in bar procedures. My wife's glass of wine also had to be returned as it had bits in the bottom of the glass.
Review 117:The food in the restaurant was excellent including breakfast. Staff friendly and helpful and room comfortable, also the public house down the road is recommended a visit. This is our second visit to this Hotel and will return again.
Review 118:The decor is looking tired but it did not detract from our enjoyment and our room was great. It advertised cream tea but when we asked for one we was told no one was there to make it for us. shame because I was looking forward to it.
Review 119:Most things
Review 120:Breakfast on all three days, poor quality, bread just supermarket bread, continental poor choice, cooked often cold or stood too long
Review 121:Room, staff most of them
Review 122:The pudding was a disappointment after my high expectations based on the main dish! As I was asked how it was I did express my disappointment but very gratified to note that I was not billed for it; thank you.
Review 123:I liked my room, did not get enough time to explore the garden or other facilities if any available. The staff in general were very courteous; the service lovely. The food too was good except the bread & butter pudding after dinner.
Review 124:The place is a bit shabby and badly in need of redecoration in places.
Review 125:Second time we have stayed and we were made very welcome in spite of having to change our rooms because the wc would not flush. Both times the rooms were clean, the towels and bed linen was pristine, the beds were comfortable and the water was hot. Breakfast was very enjoyable and plentiful.
Review 126:The smell inside the hotel, it smelt like a second hand shop. The hotel is very dated including our room and is in need of a complete refurbishment. We had a premium room, the only thing premium was the size of the room and certainly was not worth the money. The shower hose had black mould. It goes without saying we were very disapointed and would not stay again.
Review 127:The look of the hotel from the outside. Breakfast was quite good.
Review 128:Difficult to find from the East. We wondered about one management individual who kept wandering about everywhere and seemed unable to leave guests in peace. He delighted in prodding the staff for no good reason and pestered female guests, even at breakfast! Oh yes, the mattresses have seen better days and need replacing, even if you do prefer something soft to sleep on.
Review 129:Easy to find from the West with loads of parking and comfortable, generally. We keep going back there so it must be okay. Yes, it is!
Review 130:Stayed in room 28 everything good but the shower could do with updating .
Review 131:The staff attentive but not in your face. Nice Bar to relax in after our family party with a snack and a nightcap. Well done to all.
Review 132:The room was rather dark and poorly lit. Decor was rather dated and the whole place felt rather tired and crying out for facelift. The buffet style breakfast was adequate but again seemed to belong to a bygone age.
Review 133:Good location andpleasant situation. The staff were very attentive and polite and helpful.
Review 134:The bed was the usual firm hotel bed, so not really a complaint.
Review 135:Our bedroom was a very large spacious room, with everything we would need. Plenty of storage space. Good buffet breakfast Very quiet location with a pleasant walled garden. Good value for money.
Review 136:The beds were skinny with no sheets and skimpy blankets which fall off in the night. Both TV & wifi reception very poor in rooms
Review 137:The service, food & location
Review 138:We thought some of the rooms were a bit dated and needed a bit a lick of paint and a tidy up.There was some mould on the shower and windows but otherwise we really enjoyed our stay
Review 139:The four poster bed and plenty of space in the room ,very clean and excellent breakfast. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 140:My room looked 'tired' and dated. The low energy light bulbs made my room gloomy and depressing. Worse in the bathroom with dirt in the light globe. An old fashioned shower and I couldn't make it run a bath. The coffee at breakfast was awful and no one smiled or spoke to me. The tubs of flowers on the patio were dead.
Review 141:Lovely, quirky old house. Walled garden. Secure parking. Friendly person on reception. Very quiet. comfy bed. Nice bedding. Well maintained. Good location. Lovely lounge.
