Reviews for Norfolk Arms Hotel
Review 1:My newly refurbished room, just so comfortable , being able to park and not worry about getting around as everything is near, the beautiful walks, and large choice of restaurants , including the Norfolk arms which was great value for money, and very tasty.
Review 2:Being charged £129.00 for an extra night (27th) when its advertised as £94.00 . Left a bad taste after an otherwise excellent experience
Review 3:the general atmosphere .excellent staff attitude . good breakfast
Review 4:Meant to be pet friendly but we were told that if anyone was eating food in any bar the dog would not be allowed in the same room - luckily no one was eating in the bar. Treated like lepers at breakfast - kindly opened up small bar for us to eat in with our little dog.
Review 5:Given a nice big room on ground floor as we had our dog with us. Very comfortable and clean. No dog bowls provided though.
Review 6:Nothing
Review 7:All staff very friendly and helpful, lovely room, clean, cosy, welcoming - everything I needed - nice bathroom - clean and inviting - very, very good value for the money
Review 8:Fabulous location very central for all Arundel facilities. Good value for money. Room had a great view of the Town Square. Original windows were a bit draughty but heavy curtains put paid to that so no problem there. Hotel currently being decorated but all staff were polite and friendly and we had a good stay.
Review 9:The staff were so welcoming & helpful - we really felt that they cared about our welfare. The atmosphere very pleasant &,relaxing...the décor & furniture in the main hotel suited its history & our ground- floor room in the annex was ideal, quiet & comfortable... Lovely breakfast in elegant surroundings...
Review 10:No bad experience but the Bedrooms and bathrooms in the annexe are very tired and need refurbishment. The beds were very comfortable and the water hot.
Review 11:location for the Christmas Fayre was perfect
Review 12:Renovations were in progress and the reception staff didn't explain the temporary changes e.g the main bar was closed and breakfast was in a small room at the back of the hotel. In general the staff did not appear professional.
Review 13:Great location in the centre of Arundel. The heritage feel of this 300 year old building has been maintained..
Review 14:Hotel had character being a coaching inn and was in the centre of town. Was easy to walk from the station to hotel. Had a lot of antique shops which we liked browsing in. Castle and Cathedral was a magnificent sight in the town.
Review 15:Massive draft through the windows which didn't shut properly - fine once the curtains were drawn. Very small niggle tho. Hotel is looking a bit tired which is a shame. didn't affect our stay tho.
Review 16:Very pleasant, attentive staff. Lovely comfy bed. food excellent.
Review 17:Not bad but we had booked a double room and the mattress was 2 singles pushed together on a double base so not what I would call a double bed.
Review 18:Location: lovely local walks, historical buildings, interesting shops and independent restaurants.
Review 19:Central location, just a short walk from t!he Jailhouse Blues venue (which involves alcoholic beverages). Easy to stroll back at end of a tiring evening without risk of needing to drive.
Review 20:The Receptionist Michelle, was extremely kind and good when we had to leave a day earlier than expected. She sorted it out for us. Thankyou. I cannot fault the hotel or accommodation. They were all happy, helpful, and cheerful staff.
Review 21:Breakfast freshly cooked to order BUT dreary sliced bread on offer - very dull Yet artisan bread available in all cafes, shops and restaurants in Arundel.l
Review 22:Given a room on the ground floor in an annexe, because we didn't want to climb stairs
Review 23:Our courtyard room was comfy and quiet but shabby and hopefully next for refurbishment. The breakfast was not cooked well and having to queue to make your own toast less than ideal.
Review 24:Pleasant hotel still being refurbished. Comfy snug and smart looking restaurant.
Review 25:No complaints and we stay very regularly .
Review 26:Had a lovely dinner with friends and the service was very good . Thank you. The fireplaces are fabulous and should be kept burning day and evening . They are very effective.
Review 27:Not really a problem, but there is no lift.
Review 28:really lovely, big, comfy room, with big en suite. Good cooked breakfast, plus buffet, and there is a restaurant there too which takes a Tastecard, delicious food! Really well placed right in the middle of everything. Arundel is a darling little town, the castle and cathedral are well worth a look.
Review 29:Room very small which didn't reflect the high price I paid, a 5% discount was offered on complaint. Room very hot and only opening window could not be secured open.
Review 30:Comfortable bed
Review 31:We were in room 23 on top floor of main building, no lift and a bit of a hike, we were not aware of this prior to visit.
Review 32:The location is great being in the centre of town. Breakie excellent
Review 33:no lift to rooms, work being done in hotel that we had not been told about . Room opposite pub very noisy between 12pm and 1am weekend nights.
Review 34:hotel in middle of Arundel easy to get everywhere
Review 35:Breakfast Was swimming in fat/oil. sausages overcooked, mushrooms and hash browns were dripping with fat. Very unhealthy meal.
Review 36:Bedroom spacious and bed comfortable. We had last visited 50 years ago on our honeymoon and came to relive old memories. Hotel very dated.. Sadly we left feeling disappointed.
Review 37:We were not warned about the refurbishment in progress, so reception and stairs were dirty and chaotic. Staff seemed to have difficulty coping. They said they had sent an email but it wasn't to my address.
Review 38:warm room and comfortable clean bed
Review 39:The only bad point was that I didn't manage to get a properly cooked egg( poached or fried) on either day we were there.
Review 40:We had a lovely room at the front of the Hotel overlooking the street. The bed was very very comfortable. The decor was dated but everywhere was very clean.
Review 41:There was nothing that we did not like.......but guests must be aware that this is not a boutique hotel....its a beautiful old English Coaching Inn with open fires and wood smoke in the air.....and the odd slightly worn tread on the stairs...we just loved it!!
Review 42:The location in the town center was excellent. With the castle so close by and the river it made a perfect venue for my cousins wedding. The staff were so genuine and friendly. Our bedroom, at the very top of the hotel was quite spacious ....the bed was so comfy!!!!
Review 43:Run Down Wallpaper Coming Off Walls Looks Like It Need A Good Revamp. Breakfast Bar Sparse Only One Type Of Jam, Croissants Cold, Had To Plug In Toaster Ourselves And It Is An Old One. Cold Meats Looked Horrid.
Review 44:Central place, nice staff, accommodation fine
Review 45:Limited vegetarian option (only one) on the dinner menu and this did not change in the 3 nights we stayed. Consequently we only dined in house one night.
Review 46:Good location in the centre of town. Very good breakfast. Cheerful staff.
Review 47:Bathroom terrible bath tap doesn't turn off . Floor flooded because shower curtain too short. Room tiny . More like a garret . Bumpy single bed without even a headboard and not very clean . Old fashioned and not well maintained .
Review 48:Allocated a court-yard room, OK and functional. However, had to run across the courtyard to breakfast as it was raining and ended up soaked. Not the best start to a day.
Review 49:Have stayed several times, great location, Arundel is very pretty and the staff were very friendly.
Review 50:When I asked to stay a further night, I was told we could but were given a price more than 50% higher than the average of the previous 2 nights. This was unacceptable! Although staff were generally very friendly, helpful and cheerful, some of them were sometimes a bit erratic and haphazard.
Review 51:Mainly the location, which was superb.
Review 52:Dinner was ok, but thought as resident guests we didn't have to pay the supplement.
Review 53:Michelle was excellent. Very welcoming, efficient and helpful. Breakfast was super.
Review 54:Excellent location. Still doing renovations but I would imagine it's a long job on a building of this age. However, what has been completed is of a very good standard.
Review 55:Stair carpets were worn as was the one in my room. Listed building status means no double glazing in the rooms, well mine anyway, facing the street, so was very noisy especially in the morning.
Review 56:Staff were friendly, helpful, efficient and polite. I only had the breakfasts. The choice was excellect and the staff brilliant. The attitude of all the staff far out weighs my grizzles about the decor. They were spending a fortune having the decorators doing work outside so perhaps the carpets will be next.
Review 57:Damp walls leaking ceilings this property is sadly getting more and more run down, there are ongoing works being carried out and plans to upgrade the hotel generally but having stayed here precisely a year earlier frankly not much has really changed since. Previously we stayed in their annex building but on this visit we were given room 8 for 2 nights in the main hotel itself. On entering the room some wall paper was peeling off and generally everything smelt & felt damp. We complained to Management but as the hotel was full (bank holiday weekend) it was impossible for us to be moved at that time, fortunately it was Arundel Festival and as we where visiting friends there we could escape the room for hours. The Management had told us that they would come back with some news soonest yet upon our return to the room later that evening there were no messages. Overnight it rained and during the early hours of the morning two leaks appeared in the ceiling and this time I went down to reception to complain again. The lady on reception was very apologetic and concerned that we had not been contacted further about our initial complaint and the need to change rooms. She then offered me room 10 on the same floor but as there was more damp showing along the corridor ceiling to that room I declined, she then told me that as soon as a fresh dry room was available we could move in. We moved into a room in the annex part of the building around midday which was fine. The Hotel did not charge us for the first night. So, if you are intending to pop along to the Norfolk Arms anytime soon remember to take your brolly with you!!
Review 58:It may be wearing out but now but it still has its charms and the staff are likable & incredibly upbeat, their new town bar is open and it was nice to see an old working gramophone playing a vinyl LP of a Simon & Garfunkel album in its lounge, after having had breakfast (which is very good) we sat in the bar and listened to them whilst a new room was being readied (see what we didn't like). I really hope that the hotel will get its proposed full make over soon, it sits very proudly in the heart of Arundel, a genuine landmark and deserves the best of attention.
Review 59:Car park is very small and it was difficult to find parking at the hotel upon our arrival.
Review 60:The staff were lovely and the location is right in the centre of the town.
Review 61:Needed to open windows and consequently early morning beer delivery for one, disturbed sleep, had asked for quiet room.
Review 62:The bed, vast four poster, fitting for a Coaching Inn
Review 63:All the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. The location was perfect for a weekend break to Arundel. Would definitely return.
Review 64:Hotel is a little tired in places and the bars ran out of the local cask real ales during the Bank Holiday Festival weekend!!
Review 65:All the staff were so welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Hotel is perfectly placed in the centre of the town. Would highly recommend it.
Review 66:staff were totally unorganized for meals so everyone waited for everything. same with finding rooms and answering questions. Willing but untrained.
Review 67:great location
Review 68:we had a top floor room with a very uneven floor and low ceiling.Lots of stairs to climb but would stay again.
Review 69:Location was perfect, hotel was friendly and comfortable.2nd visit for us.will definately go again .food was excellent.
Review 70:It would have been nice if the lighting round the bed was better. It was too dim to read comfortably. The net curtains really needed a clean.
Review 71:The staff were so friendly and helpful. The bedroom was unusual, wonky and quirky (not at all 'standard')and a very good size. The breakfasts were brilliant.
Review 72:Asked for a refurbished and quiet room when I booked months ago, was given an old room overlooking the road. No refurbished rooms available? Moved room to back of hotel. Poor value for money when you consider other properties in Arundel. This should be the place in Arundel but sadly not. Hotel undergoing refurbishment but still a lot to do. When finished could be lovely.
Review 73:Location and history
Review 74:The ancient ensuite.
Review 75:Lovely building in a tremendous location in the centre of Arundel. The breakfast was excellent and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The only slight negative was the ensuite bathroom was ancient and really not up to scratch.
Review 76:On arrival the receptionist was on the phone not business but talking to her father. This receptionist Michelle i believe was her name advised us of absolutely nothing, she really is doing nothing for your hotel.
Review 77:Abby the lead in the restaurant was excellent as were her staff.
Review 78:Food was great, excellent breakfast. The lovely staff were polite, helpful and enjoyed good banter. Lovely olde worlde building with plenty of character. Excellent location near castle, pubs, restaurants.
Review 79:Nothing!
Review 80:We liked all of the staff. Very friendly and extremely helpful. Personally I thought Michelle was outstanding and look forward to seeing her again soon.
Review 81:The building is tired although it was clear that a great deal of work was being put into redecoration. The resident parking is somewhat hit and miss when there is a function on in the hotel.
Review 82:For activities in and around Arundel the hotel could not be more central. The staff were unremittingly cheery and helpful.
Review 83:Room was not ready at 2pm as stated. Rather slow service for breakfast on the first morning
Review 84:Ideal location with free car parking. Breakfast good. Large room and comfortable beds
Review 85:Car park badly designed and of great concern when trying to back in and out of parking spots. Spaces should be more clearly defined for staying guests.
Review 86:Comfortable Hotel in centre of lovely village
Review 87:the carpets were worn did not give a good first impression. the pub over the road played loud music until 12.00 but the man on reception sorted out another room that was fine.
Review 88:the staff were friendly, the man on reception was very helpful
Review 89:Room less attractive than website photos, bathroom in need of severe upgrade. Breakfast was a comedy or errors with staff not organised or experienced
Review 90:The friendliness of the manager and the staff. We were in the annexe as the hotel had a wedding on the saturday night. The manager provided us with a fan, as the room was fairly stuffy. We will stay again and hope to be located in the main hotel.
Review 91:Seriously understaffed, which left the few remaining staff abrupt and somewhat rude. Checking in took far too long and we had to wait 30 minutes to get into our room.
Review 92:Location of hotel and building itself lovely.
Review 93:The décor was a bit tired in places. The shower was weak and fiddly.
Review 94:The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious There was plenty of choice at breakfast and the quality of the food in the restaurant in the evening was good.
Review 95:The outside has scaffolding all around the building. I realise they are updating this hotel so the need for scaffolding. but does put you off when u arrive. There is no Separate guest lounge with easy chairs if u wished to sit and read. especially when it rains and it did!!! Just the bar area or in the coffee room which is not on easy chairs. There is an outside area which is lovely and new but again not comfortable for lounging. Prices may seem a little steep.
Review 96:The staff were excellent. Our room was great with a sitting area but I did notice we had a better room . Dinner ok Breakfast was great. Whatever you wanted even if not on actual menu. Porridge for instance. No trouble for hotel and staff. thank you. Great Location. Close to everything you wish to see and next to the castle with easy walking to entrance.
Review 97:Room needed total renewal. Toilet seat was broken but fixed promptly. Shower arm falling off the wall and tubing kinked so poor water flow. Bathroom floor heavily stained. T/V was good but should be on a swinging arm for best view and the fixed angle made us close the curtain due to the bright sunlight making the picture almost invisible.
Review 98:Staff very apologetic and advised us rooms were in process of renovation. Also very sorry that breakfast took 55 mins to arrive after the "ticket got lost".
Review 99:The Hotel is in the middle of a refurbishment and should be lovely when it is finished. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food was very nice.
Review 100:Hotel in really bad condition damp outside the room Inside the room tap dripping wallpaper peeling toilet seat broken trouser press not working mould on wallpaper /stained Breakfast cold only one bottle brown sauce in the hotel No draft beer it was a total joke and would like refund or at least half back Stayed in better hotels fur lot less and won't ever be returning to that hotel Also hardly had any sleep due to a couple arguing near our room Also water the water tank never stopped filling and thus was right above the bed hence never again it was shocking
Review 101:The location
Review 102:Neither wifi nor parking were available despite the advertised offer. The shower pressure was weak. Lack of good quality fruit and bread at breakfast.
Review 103:Being at the centre of all the charms of Arundel. A clean, comfortable room. The old bones of this coaching inn, which has the potential to be lovely if renovations are completed carefully.
Review 104:Some of the chairs in dinning room were too high for eating your meals. I wouldn't class us as a mature couple we're middle aged.
Review 105:All the staff were friendly, happy in their workplace and couldn't do enough to help.
Review 106:Needs refurbishment desparately and sound proofing. Pub revellers make lots of noise late into night despite there being door security. Poor lighting in the rooms. Phones don't work. Blamed the Duke for lack of investment in property.
Review 107:Scandalously out-dated. Shocking a hotel would open it doors in such poor condition. It felt like a student bed-sit.
Review 108:The nostalgia of feeling like I had gone back in time by 30 years.
Review 109:It is a bit dated. The bar area is not particularly comfortable.
Review 110:It's an old hotel and whilst it could do with some refurbishment, it is quite comfortable. It is well situated in the centre of Arundel. Staff are generally good.
Review 111:Only problem for me no lift had to go up two stories to room.
Review 112:The staff were friendly and very helpful. hotel has an old fashioned look which was nice.
Review 113:Got double bed, when asked for a twin. Had to share bed with my elderly mother, was not very nice. No grass on premises for dogs, smoke fills rooms at the back from people sitting outside. Got only one set of towels when clearly there were two people in the room. Bed is very high, not good if you have mobility issues or short legs! No fans in room for hot days and wifi was off when we were there.
Review 114:I could take my dogs, breakfast is ok, staff overall friendly.
Review 115:Guests on an offer will be put in the 'stables' and will have breakfast in the third breakfast room next to the kitchen.
Review 116:The breakfast, the very friendly and helpful staff, the cleanliness of the rooms.
Review 117:Our room was quite shabby and the window did not open. This said though, they were doing renovation work on one of the restaurants so perhaps the rooms are next on the list.
Review 118:The location was great, right on the high street and just in front of the Castle. Evening meal and breakfast were good with a fair choice and averagely priced. The bed was amazingly comfortable. The staff were all really nice, helpful and friendly.
Review 119:Shabby hotel. Outside was littered with cigarette butts and disused furniture piled up. Even the room we had was recently renovated but the phone didn’t work, we had to ask for a remote for the tv, one of the plug sockets sparked when used and they should sack who ever does their bathroom tiling! Also the ‘free wifi’ didn’t work.
Review 120:Staff very friendly and accomodating, and breakfast was lovely.
Review 121:A shame about the decor - room 2 especially Paint & wall paper tired - and I could smell "stale cigarettes" every time I walked in - dark cream gloss paint like nicotine stain! also windows leaked, so wall paper peeling - but listed building so windows cannot be updated
Review 122:This was exactly the location I wanted for visits to Wetlands Centre - Dining room and Breakfast room very pleasant
Review 123:The hotel is very old and interesting, but my room was unreasonably shabby. No curtains at the (very dirty) bathroom window. And the noise from the yard started just after six am. The manager was too far above speaking to his guests, which I thought was strange.
Review 124:The town of Arundel is one of the most picturesque places in the country, with a great choice of restaurants and pubs. The bed was very comfortable.
Review 125:Thick layer of dust on top of wardrobe. At my eye height and very visible. Picture rails and skirting boards in room noticeably unclean.
Review 126:Good location. Excellent staff and service.
Review 127:There is no lift and it can be quit a hard climb to the top floor especially with your luggage.
Review 128:Comfortable and newly decorated room.Friendly and obliging staff.Relaxed, informal atmosphere.
Review 129:Noisy workmen sitting at the outside tables opposite our room first thing on Monday morning
Review 130:Great location in Arundel High Street Plenty of free parking Helpful and welcoming staff Decent sized double room with good facilities Good cleanliness throughout Tasty cooked to order hot breakfast
Review 131:Uncomfortable pillows. lack of lift.. The Norfolk Arms is very ramshackle with rooms over several buildings. We went as a group, in three rooms. The rooms were very spread apart. I spoke to the manager before we visited, he assured me two of the rooms would be together with views overlooking the town. Only one room was overlooking the town. One was in the annexe, the third room had a view of a brick wall.
Review 132:Locatiion. The polish girl at breakfast was a breath of fresh air. Free parking and wifi
Review 133:The scruffiness of the place I put down to the fact that you were having a lot of renovations done so really not your fault .. We found all the stairs a really trial. I was amused by the comment that a lift was not an option because it is a listed building, particularly as there is a lift in the castle which much be even more "listed"
Review 134:The location was great for us. And the welcome was good.
Review 135:I was particularly pleased that I was only charged for 2 nights as I had to leave early from my 4 night booking with an injured leg--since had hospital treatment twice
