Reviews for Boars Head Hotel
Review 1:Not easy getting up stairs to second floor; poky little room with dark oak (but modern) furniture. Breakfast was OK but omelette disappointing. I should have asked for a steak knife for the duck in the evening.
Review 2:Good ensuite
Review 3:Run up to Xmas, good central location for shopping. Car parking also a bonus. Good food and pleasant staff at all times. Stayed before and standards are excellent.
Review 4:Uncomfortable bed and pillows in master room 15 such a shame. It didn't really bother us but this room would be a nightmare for those wanting peace and quiet on any night the hotel has live music as its right above where the bands play.
Review 5:Great location, great room, great breakfast
Review 6:n/a
Review 7:Second visit ,like that its near the shopping centre, always a warm welcome from staff. We regually go for sunday lunch too which is very good.We had evening meal there never had a bad one .Also the rooms new decor/furniture lovely.Great stay ,will be going back in near future,
Review 8:before booking people should know it's a high old property with steep narrow flights of stairs to rooms. Do not book if you are not fully fit or have any mobility problems at all. There is no lift or offer of assistance with luggage. Prices are standard.
Review 9:Handy for town
Review 10:the stairs to the room were very steep and there seemed to be no lift available
Review 11:rooms were clean and of a good size, staff were friendly and location was good
Review 12:Noise of the road (busses made the floor shake) and drinkers of a night time. Our fault for not appreciating how busy the main high street was, but coming from out of town how would we know, however more sound proof windows could be placed at the front to compensate.
Review 13:Staff, room size. Food.
Review 14:Excellent location, Town Centre. Onsite parking at rear of Hotel with plenty of spaces. Room very clean, warm, comfy. My shower room was very modern (looked like it had just come out of a show home) it was also a double shower! If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Carmarthen. Don't look any further.
Review 15:The beds were fairly comfortable but the mattresses were lumpy. They need to be replaced. Why I said that the beds were fairly comfy is because they were not the HARD beds that most hotels give their guests.
Review 16:Position for access, the food was good and the ambiance of the facility was very pleasant. Staff were friendly too.
Review 17:The staff were very pleasant and couldn't do enough for us, the bed and room were very comfortable, we ate in the hotel and the meal was very nice and good value. We would definitely stay again. The only downside was the noise on Saturday evening from a party although we were pre warned.
Review 18:the room was poor quite small, L shaped with bathroom on centre, a twin room usually has the beds side by side not round the corner from each other. should be let as a single.
Review 19:It was right in the centre
Review 20:Dining room floor was dirty...in the evening there was used cutlery and chips under my table. At breakfast, the floor had not been cleaned from the night before.
Review 21:Friendly staff
Review 22:Pillows were DIRTY,sheet was DIRTY,bedroom had NO HEATING,breakfast was COLD and SMALL. I think it would be a good idea to make guests aware that if they stay on a Saturday night there ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE LIVE MUSIC in the bar which is right bellow room15,which is the MASTER BEDROOM which was the room we chose for our WEDDING Anniversary
Review 23:Being able to leave a day early!!
Review 24:Rooms for 3 adults weren't available, so had to book 3 rooms as there were 5 of us. Yet when we arrived the first room they gave us was suitable to sleep 3. They knew we only ended up using 2 of the rooms we had paid for, so clearly the rooms were able to be occupied by 3 adults.
Review 25:Location was perfect for what we wanted, free parking was great and took the hassle and cost away from finding somewhere to park. Really comfy beds and lovely clean room and bathroom.
Review 26:Service at breakfast was a little bit iffy - no marmalade available on the table; no butter one morning. But splitting hairs. Waiter seemed over worked!!
Review 27:In the centre of the town. Good, and well cooked breakfast. Comfortable and clean room and shower room.
Review 28:EXCELLENT !! Friendly staff. Room superb (many recently refurbished to a very high standard) food tasty and great value. Good bar selection. Would return. No doubt about that
Review 29:quite noisy outside due to it being friday and saturday night, but I didn't mind as I was out til late.
Review 30:staff were excellent and friendly, the rooms were much better than advertised.
Review 31:There was no parking on the Saturday night as the Car Park was full. The room was quite noisy on the Saturday night due to the Rugby celebrations happening in the street below.
Review 32:Rooms had been very recently refurbished. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 33:The promised wifi in all rooms disappeared on Saturday night but this could have been because of the rugby.
Review 34:This town centre hotel was a good location for a group of us walking the Wales Coast Path. The car park at the rear was adequate although a little cramped and the staff were all friendly and helpfull. Our room was clean and comfortable and it looked like the bathroom had been recently refurbished. The evening meal was good value and the breakfasts were good but the waitress, who was very efficient, could do with some help as the service was slow. Saturday night was noisey both inside and outside the hotel but Wales had just beaten England in the World Cup!
Review 35:Wasn't told about the front gate being locked at night. Drove around trying to find a public car park but all full. Eventually realised the gate had a small door which our key opened. Wasted half hour driving round one way system to get back to hotel to try another attempt to get in!
Review 36:Very comfortable. Lovely new bathroom. Excellent breakfast.
Review 37:The welcome no request was to much trouble, the staff were great during our stay of 4 nights we used the in house restaurant food choice, portions and service 1st class
Review 38:I was a little bit disappointed in the evening meals though..The bed was a bit hard for my personal taste.
Review 39:The Hotel was very pleasant & clean..The room was good..The breakfasts were good..The staff were quite friendly..It was in a good central location.
Review 40:Had to ask for milk, tea, coffee at breakfast as supplies on buffet had run out. Waiting staff at breakfast and in the restaurant did not seem very well trained.
Review 41:Modern bathroom. Good size bedroom with new furnishings. Good storage space.
Review 42:Staff very attentive, breakfast excellent, I stayed 3 nights. You must try the hotel restaurant for evening meal, you won't want to eat anywhere else. It's all home cooked, freshly prepared, excellent value for money and a great menu
Review 43:Staff are blatantly ignorant !!! To say the least . Got accused of something which definitely not the case . Definitely won't be going again . A smile goes a long way I say !!!!
Review 44:Location
Review 45:Having booked several months in advance I was surprised to find myself in a disability room in an annex and not in the main building. The bed felt at best not aired and at worst damp. Whereas we were not abused I would call it service with a grimace.
Review 46:As we booked a twin room, I didn't like the layout of the beds and I felt it was a bit too noisy at night time from the people drinking as the language was a little strong.
Review 47:I found the breakfast very enjoyable, although the room was very quiet perhaps a little radio in the background would be better.
Review 48:2 main meals served cold..(although the items were removed from final bill).remote control in room not working, bulb in lamp not working, staff in bar miserable, no friendly chat, one word answers...stairs tricky for elderly residents.
Review 49:Breakfast meal, staff on 1st morning very friendly, rooms clean, newly decorated. Gent on departure very helpful.
Review 50:Shower - couldn't get hot water and a lot of mess/water on bathroom floor. . No light near bed. Small shelf alongside bed would have been useful for alarm clock and spectacles.
Review 51:handy location near town. excellent breakfasts
Review 52:a little noisy from the street but it was a town centre hotel and was in close proximity to night life the car park was a little narrow as it was an entrance under an archway next to the hotel.
Review 53:It was a nice hotel 16th century oak beamed, the on suits in all our rooms(8of them) had been recently refurbished and all the rooms were very comfortable we had a meal there and the food was very good and plentiful the breakfast was excellent
Review 54:Poor car park. There are at least 9 bedrooms being let out and only a similar number of parking spaces, which includes where staff and other pub users are parking too. If all guests brought cars then there would not be enough room for all to park. Also, the car park entrance is difficult to manoeuvre. Driving an Astra I had to drop wing mirrors to fit through the entrance. If it were any bigger then I would not have been able to park at all as there is no road side parking either. If you have a larger vehicle then you have no chance
Review 55:The breakfast was good
Review 56:Internet did not work in room, but worked well downstairs. I was in the top room, so it probably worked elsewhere.
Review 57:Nice and close and friendly. Nice big room, with a big bathroom.
Review 58:The shower was hard to figure out and the floor got very wet in the process. Also there was nowhere to put the soap in there.
Review 59:The history, the breakfast staff and the food.
Review 60:food not particularly good. breakfast on 1st day poor although there was an improvement. I have mobility problems and although I can manage stairs it was very difficult to negotiate the last flight to our room as they were so narrow. I believe we could have been offered an alternative room as people booked in after us. I know I could have made a fuss but as it was a late booking we took what was given. A bit of consideration would have been appreciated or prior knowledge of potential problems. We probably would have gone elsewhere if we had known.
Review 61:As it's on a main road there was a considerable amount of street noise
Review 62:The atmosphere of being in such an old building. It was very close to everything. Our evening meal in the restaurant was delicious and good value for money.
Review 63:Only one member of staff doing everything on first night, booking in guests, running bar, looking after restaurant so was very stressed
Review 64:Room had obviously just been decorated. Very clean and comfortable
Review 65:Staff not over customer orientated - seem under stress/end of shift. Attending a funeral and a bit pushed for time - speed efficiency not particularly slick and smooth
Review 66:Nice room, good bathroom, old worldly
Review 67:Excellent. Friendly helpful staff, lovely hotel very clean and has a lovely character about it. Rooms nice size and clean. Only a stop over hotel but would definitely go again especially for the price.
Review 68:Very limited space in car park and a lot of steps to many of the rooms.
Review 69:Traditional hotel in a great location with friendly staff and large and comfortable bedrooms.
Review 70:Internet did not work in my room, but worked well in bar area. Was not that disappointed as it was pleasant in the bar
Review 71:Nice and close to all. Big room with a great bathroom. Clem and friendly.
Review 72:Brekfast didn't open until 7.45, different young lady not particularly helpful or friendly
Review 73:Lovely welcome by the young lady when I arrived. Comfortable and lovely room
Review 74:Location perfect for town, easy walking distances, Carmarthen lovely friendly town. Boars Head lovely hotel, plenty of character, staff very friendly.. Breakfast lovely,
Review 75:The early stop tap - but we were a bit late getting back at 23:00.And the stairs - is there no way a lift could be installed?
Review 76:The location, the parking (we're both disabled) , the staff and the hotel now, at long last, being brought up to modern standards - though I did l did enjoy the old as well (our fifth or sixth stay there).
Review 77:nice and friendly staff very good and helpful good food and cosy bar to enjoy a drink if you have a mobility problem make sure you tell them in advance and they will cope with the request
Review 78:Bed very close to the bathroom door, in danger of hurting oneself if got up during the night ot use bathroom. Arrived at 9.30 having travelled from overseas, no food available in hotel had to go out to local chipper which closed at 10.00. Something light even a sandwich would have been sufficient.
Review 79:It's a nice hotel with lots of charector however the stairs between floors 2 & 3 are steep with narrow treads.
Review 80:The rooms. Plenty of space nice modern furniture and very clean
Review 81:Clean - plenty of hot water - good location in the town - within walking distance of the station, over the pedestrian bridge and up the hill. . Good choice of breakfast,
Review 82:Some of the steps on the second flight were a little narrow but that's just being very picky if people not to good on the stairs. Fortunately that didn't put us off.
Review 83:This was my second stay at Boars Head after graduating from Trinity College in 1999. Used to drink in Boars Head as a student. Boars Head has hardly changed since my uni days. Ideal place to stay for location to shops, bus station and within easy walk to train station. Our room was on second floor and very tastefully done out! Bed was very comfortable ! Definitely stay here again. Martin the owner was friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
Review 84:Food, catering needs to be improved. Beware the dreaded stairs!
Review 85:It was nice to walk into a happy atmosphere. All the staff were very pleasantly easy going, and the hotel was well maintained.
Review 86:Very limited vegetarian options One member of staff just couldn't be bothered, which did affect the quality of the stay
Review 87:Location Some staff - helpful and friendly Breakfast Parking on site Rooms clean
Review 88:The bedrooms were not cleaned at all during our 2 weeks stay which was very surprising and (being picky) we only had biscuits on the coffee tray twice during the two weeks.
Review 89:The staff are so pleasant and helpful and the food was very good.
Review 90:Quality of food needs upgrading to match the rooms that are offered. The old fashioned dessert cabinet produced dry deserts.
Review 91:Nice welcome, great room cannot fault it. Nice breakfast as good as you get anywhere.Nice staff.
Review 92:Stayed in a twin room with my sister, only issue was the lack of space between furniture leading to stubbed toes and knocked shins!
Review 93:Recently refurbished room and breakfast!
Review 94:no mention that on a Saturday night there seemed to be a taxi rank underneath our window so from 11 onwards to the early hours there was constant noise and shouting from club goers.
Review 95:going home
Review 96:Unfortunately we went down to breakfast at 9.32am to be advised that breakfast had finished at 9.30am, and that we were not able to have a cooked breakfast, but must admit it smelled lovely :(
Review 97:The staff were very accommodating and couldn't do enough for us. I would completely recommend a stay at this friendly hotel
Review 98:The noise on a live entertainment night. Could FEEL the thud of the music through the floor-Just the one night though on the bank holiday
Review 99:easy access for all sightseeing. All the staff were pleasant and helpful
Review 100:The wifi didn't work, nor did the toilet. In fact the bathroom looked like something out of a prison movie. The bed was beyond uncomfortable, and the room furnishings were severely lacking. This is not a place to stay if you are looking for peace and quiet. I heard every conversation, not just from the street but also from the bar, and i was on the top floor. They played live music, which meant I lived in an earthquake until the wee hours of the night. The entire room shook and rumbled, on top of the horrible band's music blaring.
Review 101:The only problem was the car park. It was very small not much room to turn car around
Review 102:The staff were great they told us the history of the place and made us quite welcome could have stopped longer
Review 103:We stayed for just one night but it was exactly what we needed. Friendly staff, lovely comfortable , clean and attractive room and great breakfast. Central location so plenty of places to visit and eat locally.
Review 104:There was live music in the hotel on the Sunday night and our room was directly above it. The floor was vibrating from the noise that was coming from downstairs as were the lamps on the bedside tables. When I phoned down to explain the barmaid told me I'd have to speak up as she couldn't hear what I was saying as it was too noisy in the bar!!! The manager came to the door of our room and said it would finish at twelve and that I had to 'bear with us!' The next morning, even though I handed my key directly to the manager nothing was said which was disappointing! I would not recommend this for a relaxing night away!
Review 105:The location was great and the room was pleasant for he price we paid.
Review 106:Room left open by cleaners no apology from management did not even ask if anything was missing. really disappointing as we have stayed on average once every 4weeks in last 8mths.
Review 107:I loved the heritage style hotel. The room was small but comfy and very quiet. Included full English breakfast was excellent too.Highly recommended for an older solo traveller.
Review 108:The elderly woman who was working behind the bar on the 25/04/2015 was very rude and abnoxious towards myself and my friend. First she told us we were not allowed a drink until the doorman came in and said we were guests and that seemed to upset her even more. She then started to talk welsh to another member of staff who was serving us. What she didn't realise was that i am welsh and i understand welsh!
Review 109:Most of the staff were helpful and friendly!
Review 110:This place feels as if it is struggling. There was just one member of staff at any time trying to juggle reception, bar, restaurant serving and meeting room set up. The staff have no idea how to please a client - training is needed. I asked for a small meeting room for 7 people laid out board room style and got a large function room which was not set up and had lots of party staff laying around and chairs piled high. Then having set the room up myself an hour later I returned with my flip chart and projector to find the room had been 'loaned' to another group! The bed was probably the worst hotel bed I have come across. I could feel every spring in the mattress. Fortunately there was a single bed in the room too so I slept in that. Please think carefully before booking this hotel. I would have walked out except that I had a meeting to host. It is a pity because I like to support traditional country hotels.
Review 111:Nothing!
Review 112:freezing cold room - took 3 hours to sort out, noisy extractor fan outside window, oldfashioned rooms, drunk people shouting in halls at 3 am, 2 lamps had no bulb in -
Review 113:liked the location - breakfast was lovely
Review 114:Hotel very dated, could do with a complete restoration to get rid of 60/70/80 fashion and bring out the original features, oak beams, oak stairway, sympathetic restoration.
Review 115:staff were extremely kind, helpfull and happy. Food was very good,
Review 116:Wish I hadn't had the breakfast it was awful. Not had much contact with the staff. The waitress was busy with another table.
Review 117:Loved the position of the hotel.
Review 118:Main light not working in the bathroom also hot water tap for the shower and bath not working! and wasn't fixed while at all during our stay.
Review 119:The 4 poster bed was lovely, most of the staff very friendly.
Review 120:repairs being made at 2am in the morning hammering and banging, breakfast irregular eveyrmorning something missing or something extra, not having things stated on breakfast menu, say not had time to go shopping.
Review 121:convenient location
Review 122:The noise on Saturday was expected, and died down after a while. The hotel also has pretty thin walls. The Internet was not very reliable, which was difficult for a business trip.
Review 123:Location is ideal in the center of town, friendly staff, room was nice with a good view
Review 124:Room above bar - shook with the noise from music (karaoke?) until midnight. Had to go out, wasn't warned about this when booking (ok after 1230am). Shaving point broken, toilet seat loose/a hazard. I was told rooms were being refurbished hence issues would be addressed but this is no use to those staying there in the meantime. Couldn't shave, very annoying, no alternative offered. No table for my room at breakfast - put at a unprepared table hence constantly had to ask for everything (cup, butter etc). Only one member of staff who was having to deal with breakfasts and checkouts on her own.
Review 125:Staff helpful/friendly, to a degree. Having a car park. Room well equipped apart from (see didn't likes) one or two issues. Breakfast.
Review 126:The main light in the bathroom didn't work, so used the one above the sink.
Review 127:It's not very often a solo traveller gets the best room in the Hotel, but this time I did, the last room left, the bridal 4 poster bed suite. Makes a change to get a decent room for a single traveller. The room was very clean with usual tea, coffee & TV. Staff very helpful and polite & the cooked breakfast in the morning very good, 'soft fried egg as well just the way I like it. All in all I enjoyed my stay.
Review 128:Can be a little bit noisy on a Saturday night.
Review 129:The Hotel is in a brilliant location. The facilities are basic but clean and the staff are very friendly. Very good value for money. This was our second visit and we will be using the Boars Head again. The food is delicious!
Review 130:The only down side is that there is no lift as it wouldn't be possible in this type of building. As my husband has mobility issues with stairs I would ask for a room with as few stairs to climb as possible. Staff very helpful with our luggage though.
Review 131:Room was lovely, quite big and the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom nice.
Review 132:Opted for the full English breakfast, it wasn't great. Mushrooms stated they were fried on the menu and they were tinned, scrambled eggs had been microwaved for too long.
Review 133:Position was fantastic. Bed was really comfortable
