Reviews for Chiseldon House Hotel

Review 1:We stayed for New Years Eve. The 5 course dinner was excellent. The disco was very good. The room was clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We would go back for another special occasion.

Review 2:When greeted at reception I was met with a fantastic, friendly staff member. She could see that I was tired and recognised that it was a bit late; and asked if I had had any dinner. I responded "no", so she asked if I would like a table booked for dinner or if I would prefer room service. She took my order there and then so that I could get myself settled in my room, eat as soon as the room service (option I took) arrived and go to sleep in a spacious, clean and tidy environment. Being greeted in such a way made a tremendous impact to my day.

Review 3:Not too happy that our booking was overlooked . Dinner could have done with a few vegetables.

Review 4:The staff were very helpful . The room was large and quiet. Breakfast was lovely.

Review 5:This hotel is really a conference and events facility therefore other guests had to fit around this. E.g. There was no cosy lounge to sit in in the evening as experienced in other similar hotels we have stayed in. These were taken up as meeting rooms.it meant if staying for several nights you were confined to your room and it was cold.the heating wasn't on.Probably ok if just overnighting but a bit depressing when there for longer. Compared to what we have previously experienced, disappointing.

Review 6:Girls on desk. External appearance of property. It was quiet. Feather pillows on request.

Review 7:The building looks a little bit tired and the courtyard could do with a makeover to make it a more pleasant place to have afternoon tea.

Review 8:Good, friendly staff who recommended a walk around the village which was quite pretty, We ordered room service for our evening meal and were really impressed with the quality of the food. Well done chef!

Review 9:we felt we were intruding upon someone else's wedding party. We couldnt enjoy the bar or the lounge once the wedding reception started. Part of our group were in a room which was badly impacted by noise from the party.

Review 10:good breakfast, convenient location

Review 11:We were unable to use the dining room on either of the nights we stayed at the hotel due to private functions taking place. It would have been helpful if we had been made aware of this when booking.

Review 12:Helpful friendly staff

Review 13:Probably not for very young children - we've got a 2 yr old and a 3 month old. Cooked breakfast was aimed more at style than substance in our view

Review 14:Beautiful large room Position and grounds The general feel of the place

Review 15:late night wedding party disco but as we were at a wedding we arrived back quite late so not an issue for us but may be an issue if you wanted a quiet evening in a country house

Review 16:very nice old country house which was close to our wedding venue. beautifull grounds and very helpfull staff

Review 17:there was only one (big) blanket for the double bed, weak breakfast, better breakfast only against payment.

Review 18:Great cuisine, graeat daily sandwiches, quiet location, close to the motorway, private parking place

Review 19:Our first night was spent in a very soft bed in a very dark room with a view of a wall, buckets, old rubbish bags and ladders, even though we had specifically asked for a hard bed in our booking due to a back injury. The staff first assured us we had the best mattress in the hotel but on the second day after no sleep at all they offered us to look at other rooms and then we were given a lovely room with a hard good bed instead of the dump we were first placed.

Review 20:The gardens

Review 21:Only tiny criticism is that the wifi didn't work in the bedroom when I was assured it should do

Review 22:the setting, the staff, the service, the room, the bathroom, the restaurant, the attention to detail,

Review 23:We had the atic room part of the ceiling came down on a slant.

Review 24:The staff are friendly. Food is good and nicely presented. Lovely building. Gardens are beautiful

Review 25:Wi-if was a bit hit and miss and the rear/side of the building wasn't as pretty as the front!

Review 26:Attended for a wedding, which was excellent. Great venue and a comfortable, well appointed room to stay in.

Review 27:The added cost of £25 for the z bed that was pretty uncomfortable and not suitable for a tall, 13 yr old child. The cooked breakfast portions were a little small.

Review 28:I loved the corner room we were given,it had a peaceful atmosphere and was very relaxing. I would definitely come again.

Review 29:Nothing really comes to mind

Review 30:I called to say I would not be booking in while late evening and they kindly arranged sandwhiches behind the bar which was a great touch,

Review 31:Room was v cold and I had heating full on, breakfast was ok. Not great value for money, would have been worse if I'd paid full price.

Review 32:Staff were v friendly

Review 33:Minor quibble that I was not advised about the free wifi

Review 34:Ideal location just outside of Swindon in a quiet place. Lovely hotel and enjoyed a peaceful night's sleep.

Review 35:The bill was wrong and I could have been charged £65 for wine I did not have.

Review 36:The food was 1st class. The room was large and comfortable with everything you would need for a week end break. staff very friendly and polite

Review 37:Had only one night.

Review 38:Loved the setting within beautiful gardens with guardian trees lending their strength to the house. It really was the English hotel Ive always wanted to stay in but never found until now. Convenience to Heathrow and Avebury was a consideration for us. Quiet, beautiful, old English ambience and friendly staff.

Review 39:The room had poorly maintained windows (rotten glazing bars), but I saw that they were being replaced around the rest of the hotel, so i'm sure this won't be a problem for future guests. The bathroom developed a leak around the velux window, which required some mopping with towels, but the weather was particularly nasty, so it would have shown up a maintenance issue.

Review 40:Special mention to the lady on reception who gave me the most amazing directions into Halfords, they were absolutely spot on, and saved me loads of time, and a jolly good sense of humour. The best directions i've ever had. And special mention to Charlotte on the waiting staff, she was fantastic and served us beautifully for our two night stay. And to the lady that was taking care of the rooms, she was so friendly. The hotel was a lovely place to be, we were looked after so well, our every need taken care of by the wonderful staff. Our rooms were beautifully situated, and very quiet, even with wedding parties on the floor below. Food was excellent, really beautifully cooked, from dinner to breakfast, such a pleasure to eat. This is how a hotel should be run.

Review 41:The location wasn't brilliant, as you needed a car to get anywhere interesting. Although the hotel is on the edge of a housing estate, it's very quiet, and the housing is invisible from the hotel. Opposite looks like agricultural land.

Review 42:The staff here were unfailingly polite and helpful and the hotel was spotlessly clean. Some areas looked a little tired, but some were beautifully done, with new carpets and lovely decor, so I think the hotel is being refurbished. The building was very characterful, with a lovely garden to sit in. The food was good, especially the breakfast.

Review 43:Rude staff on reception, very unhelpful when asking for places to eat locally. Very dated hotel with very dated rooms, awful bright furniture that needs changing. Not worth that £120 per night cost

Review 44:Nice breakfast, room where it is held in is very modern in contrast to the rest of the hotel

Review 45:Having to wait 10minutes at reception for staff when booking in. To be fair...it was at a very busy time and staff were extremely apologetic. Small gripe that stood out as the rest of stay was excellent.

Review 46:Pretty hotel setting. Lovely building.restaurant staff and food excellent.room lovely. Would definately return.

Review 47:Awful english breakfast - leathery bacon and mushrooms, nuked sausages, raw poached eggs, cold tea and toast. Very smelly drains in bathroom, feeble shower. Bedroom not sound-proof due to substantial gap under bedroom door, not great as woken up by drunken noisy merry-makers around 1.30am. Not great if you are staying and there's a wedding party at night. Not worth the usual tariff. Breakfast staff should be more punctual as dining room was not ready first thing.

Review 48:Good location, lovely gardens, efficient receptionist, nice-looking traditional hotel, comfortable bed, spacious room. Plenty of choice for breakfast but needs to get a basic english breakfast right first.

Review 49:the bathroom and bedroom was below an acceptable standard for the tariff charged

Review 50:That the hotel is going through a upgrade in its facilities and its location

Review 51:Shower pressure a little tired and the dining-room lighting could be improved-it's a little harsh in the eating part but very good in the bar area.

Review 52:Convenient and close to the M4 but still a quiet spot and easy to find. Newly- refurbished so many good points. Very comfy bed and good facilities in the room. Good food and very good service. Helpful, lovely staff.

Review 53:Breakfast took an age, everyone waiting for their eggs!! Can't understand why we waited 45 minutes, surely everything is pre prepared just eggs to cook?

Review 54:Great location just off the motorway but tucked away. Attentive staff, good food.

Review 55:A little expensive but felt value for money..

Review 56:The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable and spacious. Lovely bathroom. The location was excellent for the purpose of our stay...

Review 66:Everything. We were very well looked after.

Review 67:Wifi not so good

Review 68:The restaurant food was very fresh

Review 69:Room was nice but bed poor. They have to sort out the Wi-Fi before I'd consider staying again.

Review 70:Staf and Location

Review 71:on 3 out of 4 days the bacon at breakfast was like cardboard

Review 84:Lovely garden setting, staff where very helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed a delicious evening meal.

Review 85:Bed slightly too firm for me.

Review 86:Room size and in-room facilities were excellent for this type and size of hotel.

Review 87:We loved the sense of history of the house and our room. It was charming and comfortable.

Review 88:The service at breakfast was very poor.

Review 89:Everything was excellent and the reception staff in particular were very professional and helpful

Review 90:the staff were really nice the food was high quality and brilliantly cooked and presented really enjoyed my stay very quiet and comfortable

Review 97:Everything. Staff friendly service very good enjoyed it all

Review 98:Easy to find. Location excellent. Staff very pleasant, room delightful, restaurant food tasty breakfast delicious and good menu.

Review 99:No hot water, bed not great.

Review 100:Nice breakfast

Review 101:Very Professional

Review 102:Creaking floor boards

Review 103:The landscape and period furnishing in bedroom.

Review 104:WI-FI

Review 105:Room, garden,

Review 106:We waited 40 mins for breakfast

Review 107:views over looking the garden

Review 108:Lovely big rooms Sunny with nice views Staff very pleasant and helpful

Review 109:ceiling of the bathroom had not been painted. and there was loud drilling at 6am

Review 110:old fashioned bathroom with a tiny bath

Review 111:good dinner

Review 112:Wifi service is patchy Shower was very "limp" but assume restricted by existing service runs. Smoked Salmon breakfast was a little tight on the smoked salmon portion but it was included in the room price.

Review 113:Gorgeous setting, house & grounds. Staff courteous and attentive but not stuffy. Has rustic charm and appreciate challenges faced by Grade II listed status. Very comfortable beds. Good value for money based on offer price - it is always difficult to get true value when you travel alone as you always pay more for the privilege. Very conveniently located for my needs Very peaceful and quiet.

Review 114:While I have rated most things as excellent I did find that my shower did not work very well. I also did not see any facilities other than tea and coffee in the rooms - perhaps I missed something? I do not require lots of facilities actually so it suits me fine.

Review 115:Beautiful house in a quiet location with lovely rooms and great breakfast. Staff were friendly and efficient. I really enjoyed my stay.

Review 116:I ordered scrambled egg and smoked salmon for breakfast. I got scrambled egg and a thumbnail of fish. I have never experienced this in any other hotel or restaurant. Guess its just the way you do things. Receptionist was efficient but lacked real warmth or humour.

Review 117:Ambience in the room, en suite, general feel of the rest of the hotel. Loved the grounds. Waiter at breakfast was excellent; great personality and humour.

Review 118:Our bed was rather hard, a little like sleeping on the floor, but we only stayed one night so ok.

Review 119:We had a pleasant stay, and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Review 120:Breakfast started and finished early: 9-30am on a sunday?! Breakfast was average and rushed - staff watched as you helped yourself to coffee and tea. 'Wiltshire ham' was not a great advert for the local delicacy !! Maybe an imminent wedding reception distracted them/us?

Review 121:Lovely old country house and gardens. Emergency shaving kit from reception was high quality and good value A shame we didn't get a chance to try the dinner menu.

Review 122:Room 9 was lovely, very light. Both the receptionist and waitress and morning waiter were very helpful and friendly. The food in the restaurant was really good, it was just a pity there were not more people staying that weekend to enjoy the chef's expertise and presentation.

Review 123:There are a lot of stairs which combined with high heels and bags can be a bit hairy to navigate. Help with bags is offered though, which I would recommed accepting!

Review 124:Staff were friendly and professional. Accommodation was well presented, clean, spacious and comfortable. The food was superb and surprisingly well priced considering the quality and presentation. General ambiance was serene and promoted a good night’s sleep. Overall experience was extremely positive.

Review 125:Was made very welcome at this lovely hotel which was especially important to me as I was in Chiseldon visiting my brother and sister in law both of whom are very ill.

Review 126:Not very disabled friendly. Too many steps and stairs with no lift or stair lift. A definite no if you are in a wheelchair.

Review 127:Staff very helpful, especially Trevor. When he realised I had just had a new knee he carried my luggage to and from my car for me. Room was very clean, warm and the bed was very comfortable.

Review 128:Poor shower, even after complaining, so for thee days had to wash hair in sink. Same problem for my friend who stayed over for a night. Her lovely room was on the cool side, and we were only offered room service because of a wedding party. Our breakfast was cold and under-cooked, my fish the next morning arrived without any garnish, obviously defrosted and tasteless. I was the only person in the restaurant and they placed me next to a very noisy fridge. Could hear the TV from room next door and the man coughing-resorted to earplugs. One person on duty when I checked out, on the desk and serving breakfast; I ended up injuring my shoulder as there was no one available to take my case down the steep stairs to the lobby.

Review 129:Friendly staff, warm clean and well decorated bedroom. Reasonable room service food.
