Reviews for Ellerslie House Hotel

Review 1:Nothing to companies about

Review 2:This was a fantastic value for money. Hospitality that greated us was fantastic was made very welcome to stay within their home. I would very much recommend the room with terrace beautiful view over the well kept garden.

Review 3:I have stayed in so many Hotels in which you could get a drink / evening meal. This is not the case here. I did not wish to take the car for this purpose however the Taxis were prompt to go into town and back. so this cost might have to be factored in to your stay. Breakfast is around one table which I thought strange. The stairs to the guest rooms are narrow so phone first if mobility is an issue

Review 4:The "Hotel" was clean, beautifully presented with a touch of old world charm, excellent breakfast and the staff / owners were very helpful - when a couple of minor technical niggles occurred they were immediately rectified.

Review 5:Good secluded location , yet still close to town and motorway network . Hotel is full of charm and character . Loved the terrace outside my bedroom and was able to enjoy sitting out in the sun on my arrival .

Review 6:The parking arrangements were adhoc, on arrival one is required to ring a bell and the entrance hall and staircase was very tight to get luggage upstairs.

Review 7:The breakfast, although I'm not used to sharing a table with others.

Review 8:Shower wasn't the best and the bed was a bit soft for our comfort but very clean good sized room to compensate.

Review 9:Very welcoming and helpful staff, superb breakfast, quiet location.

Review 10:It's a lovely place everyone was very friendly peaceful only stayed one night as handy for visiting Portsmouth will stay again when visiting Portsmouth

Review 11:We expected to be staying in a hotel. It was more like a guest house though even they have a residents lounge! Aside from a good room and an excellent breakfast there were no other rooms or bar to relax in.

Review 12:Ellerslie was a nice place to stay and ideal for our purposes. Good size room with a good bathroom.

Review 13:Should not be described as a hotel because, at best it was a guest house with no hotel facilities. Room was comfortable but dated. .

Review 14:A quiet location with ample car parking. Breakfast was excellent. The one person who looked after us was very pleasant

Review 15:We were never informed about accessing facilities. Became aware of their possible existence when we tried to find someone in order to check out.

Review 16:Extra sitting area. Quiet.location

Review 17:A cliche but, having to leave!

Review 18:We were not disappointed as we had chosen Ellerslie because it wasn't a modern corporate hotel with plastic looking wood. The whole building and beautiful grounds have character which enhances the stay. The owners and staff were so pleasant and accommodating; the perfect hosts. We will be back!

Review 19:The only thing I would change was the shower. Whilst the hotel did have excellent en suite facilities I just prefer a more powerful shower and think the room could be improved with this.

Review 20:I thought the building itself was lovely and in a great scenic location. The staff and facilities were great and I would gladly stay here again. I'll try the breakfast next time too, it smelt brilliant. The bed was so comfortable, best night sleep in a long time and seeing as this was cheapest hotel I found for my stay I honestly wasn't expecting great things, just a place to rest my head, but having stayed at ellerslie I shall definitely return again.

Review 21:The owner and staff could not have been more helpful. My grandparents are very old and were worried about the stairs. The owners did everything they could to make there stay easy and comforatable for them. My grandparents said they found the staff to be friendly and welcoming and stay there again when next down So...Thank you to everyone who helped out my Granny and grandad (Catherine and Micheal Cockbill)

Review 22:Loved the traditional building, modern room which was very clean and comfortable. The grounds were lovely to relax in, so peaceful. All the members of staff were very helpful, cheerful and professional. It was a joy to stay there for our mini-break. Thank you.

Review 23:Clean and comfortable. Nicely appointed. Pleasant, helpful, staff and owners. Well-appointed room overlooking garden. Tea and coffee facilities. Free wi-fi. Great, full English breakfast.

Review 24:Bed too firm for my husband and not enough pillows. TV was outside bedroom so we didn't watch it. Wifi didn't work on my tablet.

Review 25:Breakfast was delicious! Owner was friendly and pleasant.

Review 26:Despite booking for 2 adults and one child through the booking website found out the day before that they don't accommodate children. They (not so graciously) made an exception for us. We were scowled at by a member of staff/owner for having a wander in the garden with our 2 year old (after our 6 hour car journey) I did check and there were no private signs and the garden is shown on the website photo gallery so we presumed it was for the use of guests.

Review 27:Huge room Very clean Reasonable breakfast

Review 28:There was a small friendly campsite with good facilities next door. This wasn't a problem though.

Review 29:We loved the situation, close to Fareham and Portsmouth. Comfortable rooms. Alovely garden with mature trees and shrubs attracting interesting birds and some squirrels too. A generous home cooked breakfast.

Review 30:Nothing.

Review 31:They accommodated for my special dietary needs with a lovely. hearty breakfast. I was even allowed into the kitchen to prepare my soup! Lovely and peaceful and just a stones throw from the town centre and the coast. Cannot fault it in any way!

Review 32:Poor access to rooms. Stair very steep and narrow. Unsuitable for elderly or disabled.

Review 33:Breakfast and service excellent. Room and bed very comfortable.

Review 34:Being woken up at 6.30am by a loud TV only to realise it was the TV in the kitchen. Had to go down in my PJS to say something. As it's classed as a hotel I would have expected more facilities and maybe a bar but it was like staying in someone's home. Very dated décor but I guess it adds to the charm. The suit of armour in the living room was interesting.

Review 35:That it was only 2 miles from the office and the staff were very kind.

Review 36:The bathroom could have been a little warmer.

Review 37:How nice to stay somewhere where one felt like an individual, not a statistic. The room was comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was excellent.

Review 38:Very friendly staff. As my room felt cold on the first evening, I was given extra and effective oil heater, which was turned on subsequently, to keep my room warm, welcoming me on my return every evening. I stayed 3 nights and felt very much at home. Thank you.

Review 39:The staff a friendly, room very clean and I love the decor, it is inkeeping with the old house and feels like you are stepping back in time. Classic and stylish.

Review 40:Only one problem, the bed was a bit roll together in the middle.

Review 41:Nice large room, lovely comfy chairs. Good size bathroom. Plenty of TV channels to choose from. Large king size bed.

Review 42:From the initial arrival to leaving..The room was large and very comfortable. Bathroom looked as though it had just been installed very very clean as was the room as well. Breakfasts were excellent and the staff/owners were very nice and easy to talk to. A lovely old house and grounds with history and character especially the "permanent Spanish guest" . We stayed in room 4 with terrace balcony although the weather wasn't great it was nice to sit outside first thing and watch the wildlife. Very easy for Fareham and access to the M27 to Portsmouth/Southampton. Should we go back to the area this is where we will be staying.

Review 43:Minor irritation with noise from the M27 when walking in the grounds, It wouldn't stop me staying there again

Review 44:Lovely country location. Friendly staff and breakfast

Review 45:Steep narrow stairs not suitable for the elderly or infirm. Dated bathroom suite (Avocado) Being told there was no bar when in the morning when I went to pay I passed a fully stocked bar.

Review 46:Quiet location.

Review 47:Staff only apparent at breakfast. All guests seated at same table at breakfast. No price option for breakfast other than full English. We don't eat cooked breakfast. Extremely steep, very narrow stairway.

Review 48:Good size room. Very Quiet.

Review 49:nothing

Review 50:we had a room with a separate lounge and it was great to sit and relax and watch tv . My husband was watching top gear and I was watching something else in the bedroom

Review 51:Building in general needs a little TLC, basically clean, but some paintwork not good, mostly on windows. Little cold, but that was OK for me, but can see how that might upset some.

Review 52:Beautiful building, nice setting, and good staff. Ideal for working in the Portsmouth region

Review 53:Not a complaint more of a curiosity breakfast was served round a communal table and with a near full hotel was a little cramped

Review 54:We stayed at this hotel for one night and wished we had stayed more. The setting was splendid and the owners very friendly and welcoming breakfast was plentiful and fresh cooked. Excellent

Review 55:no lounge, no bar, mis represented , I like to stay in a hotel because of the facilities, if i had wanted a B&B I could have gone elsewhere. It says HOTEL in the title, therefore you would expect a hotel not a guest house / B&B

Review 56:quiet, good breakfast

Review 57:Waste bin in room had not been emptied. No real issue.

Review 58:We arrived in a 55year old classic and they had reserved secure parking. Unfortunately we had a dynamo problem and flat battery. No worries i was afforded full support with charger and parts to rectify with cheery support. A result, would not have got home otherwise. Cannot thank them enough.

Review 59:Car park was in complete darkness and dangerous. Entry to the building was through the original rear door which was locked. When inside,we were led up a tiny back staircase, shown to our rooms and told goodnight by the staff member (it was 9pm). we had driven for hours and was looking forward to a nightcap before bed so wasn't happy. At breakfast we had to sit at a large table with 6 strangers and was unable to sit together as others were already seated and was awkward. We were amazed to see a large lounge complete with bar area, clearly out of bounds to customers mid week! Our room had a dark pink ceiling and bright yellow bathroom suite, was very dated. Was happy to leave.

Review 60:We liked the idea of staying in an old country house.

Review 61:What is there not to like.

Review 62:The friendliness on arrival, pleasant surroundings and ambiance was a nice change from the large chains. Lovely greeting at breakfast and nothing was too much trouble. Would stay again and recommend to friends.

Review 63:We had no problems. My only criticism of these forms is using up 200 characters!

Review 64:We have visited Fareham many times to stay with family. We did not realise this hotel was there, it was well hidden from the road. In spite of being so near the motorway and railway line it was very quiet.

Review 65:Very impressed. Room was large, and quiet. Modern facilities and ample safe parking. Hostess was helpful. Location was excellent with the town centre not to far away. Hope to stay there again.

Review 66:There was nothing to complain about

Review 67:The welcome was warm and welcoming, the room spacious and very well appointed, and the lounge was beautiful. Breakfast was freshly cooked and served in a homely and lovely kitchen diner, will definitely come again

Review 68:The bed was very hard, so my wife didn't seep too well.

Review 69:Very sociable and considerate staff, especially Jenny. Great breakfast. Dated décor (what I expect in an older B&B) but very nice and clean.

Review 70:Very small dining area for breakfast which meant you had to say the night before when you would be down for breakfast. 9 o'clock is early to finish staggered breakfast times for people on holiday.

Review 71:The room with attached sitting room and roof terrace; comfortable beds; very good facilities.

Review 72:On arrival we sat outside the hotel for about 20 minutes waiting for someone to answer the door, we constantly rang the bell and knocked on the door with the door knocker. I then rang their telephone number. The call was answered then rang off I rang 4 more times before a woman answered. When I explained we were waiting outside she laughed then answered the door. We did not see any staff for the next three days. On the last morning I looked for someone so I could pay the bill with cash. The gentleman called me by the wrong name then handed me the receipt for payment. He said he had taken payment the night before from the card details I had entered when booking even though it was stated when booking, and also on their own literature in the room, that we had to pay on day of departure. Such a shame that the stay this hotel was spoiled by sloppy customer service.

Review 73:We liked the cleanliness of the hotel and the location was good it was very quiet.

Review 74:On one of the nights the outside lights were not working. I had to walk to my car in total darkness. Could do with a bit more baked beans at breakfast!

Review 75:Quite location. Rooms and wardrobes were very spacious. Parking space for car. Good supply of tea bags etc - I am a heavy tea drinker! Hotel owner knew how to socialise with guests - has a nice sense of humour! I would stay at this hotel again!

Review 76:The staff were very friendly and welcoming ! Well they are not staff as this is a family run business And it shows in all the very best ways - excellent breakfast - very clean And comfortable rooms - would go back for a holiday. Excellent

Review 77:TV didn't work, neither did the WiFi If you like a communal breakfast table with all the other guests then you'll love this!

Review 78:Breakfast was good.

Review 79:The scarlet painted ceiling was a little disconcerting,

Review 80:The Hotel had a great ambiance about it. Our room was quite large and we were very satisfied with the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff who went out of their way to help my wife who is disabled. If we are in this area again we will certainly use this hotel if it's available.

Review 81:Very friendly staff, beautiful rooms in lovely surroundings. Overnight stay for family for graduation in Portsmouth. Would come back for a longer stay.

Review 82:Nothing... it was perfect for my requirements.

Review 83:I loved the peace and quiet of Ellerslie House. I was able to come and go in my own time. I loved the room, Room 3 was extremely comfortable, perhaps the addition of a small fridge would be beneficial.

Review 84:I think a fuse must have blown as all the lights in our room didn't work. As we were only staying 1 night, it wasn't a big deal though.

Review 85:Staff were very friendly and accomodating

Review 86:Ellerslie house is a homely and relaxing place to stay. We had room 4 which had a roof terrace with views over the lovely garden. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. We will certainly stay there in future should we be visiting the Portsmouth area.

Review 87:The morning coffee was instant and not ground coffee, but breakfast was very good.

Review 88:Everything really. The owners went out of their way to see that I had the balcony room that I wanted (even though my computer froze during the transaction !!) So all ended happily. My comfortable room had a spacious balcony overlooking the grounds - complete with fountain. The weather was warm and sunny so I enjoyed the view from my balcony. A place you can unwind in after a stressful long journey. I found the owner very kind and helpful. I would definitely stay there again. Thank you everyone.

Review 89:Loved the character of the hotel, charming. I would describe it as slightly faded elegance. Good breakfast and staff who were very helpful and cheerful.

Review 90:The communal breakfast table was a bit of a surprise, I prefer to wake up and eat in relative quiet. But that's a very personal thing.

Review 91:Liked the bed and the facilities, the location was fab for my visit.

Review 92:Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was very good, with good choice and good value for money. The location and surrounding countryside was good for us. rooms were comfortable with all the basics provided

Review 93:the stairs to the top room. If I was 10 years older I think it would have been very difficult to get our cases up a small fridge in the room would have been useful to store some of the food we carry with us when touring

Review 94:location and value for money

Review 95:Not really sure where to book in no reception . Terrace doors didn't have hooks to keep doors open . Would have been nice to have a fridge in the room for drinks for the teraace because no bar at the hotel.

Review 96:Loely big room with big terrace overlooking lovely gardens.

Review 97:narrow staircase. I didn't find the mattress comfortable although for others it may be OK.

Review 98:large room full of character with lovely view of the garden and fountain. Good en-suite We didn't have breakfast so cannot comment.

Review 99:We doubt that the rating is correct (manipulated ??). Breakfast in family kitchen were you are forced to watch television. The smell of preparing food in floor and rooms. Not a hotel at all....

Review 100:Clean rooms and bathroom.

Review 101:We had to wait outside for half and hour before we were able to check until the owners returned home, but consider this is probably a rare occurrence.

Review 102:Location excellent for visiting the Portsmouth & Gosport area. Superb accommodation with en-suite bedroom, adjoining sitting room and roof terrace. Sensibly priced and the FE breakfast was excellent.

Review 103:Approach to the hotel was narrow and appeared somewhat overgrown. Car parking area could be improved.

Review 104:Room was large with a good size en-suite . It was clean.

Review 105:Its a shame they don't do evening meals but there are some great places near by

Review 106:The setting and my roof top balcony was lovely. The owners are very friendly The breakfast was great.

Review 107:Our bedroom was right above kitchen/dining room so woken up earlier than we would have liked by people chatting/TV on underneath us. Decor rather outdated but functional. Bedside lights difficult for reading. Breakfast round large table with other guests and TV on throughout.

Review 108:Very convenient for using Portsmouth Ferry. Superb breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful (late arrivals no problem).

Review 109:Nothing

Review 110:A great room with the use of the roof terrace, a perfect place to sit in the sun for the evening. Bed very comfortable, bathroom very clean. Tasty and filling breakfast. The owners were sociable and helpful. We would go there again.

Review 111:The staff were very helpful and friendly, there was a good atmosphere and the breakfast was lovely.

Review 112:A little difficult to find in the dark!

Review 113:Very comfortable stay, friendly staff and really good value!

Review 114:Very comfortable bed! Quiet location, beautifully appointed rooms, and great breakfast. Will definitely visit again.

Review 115:What I liked about my stay was that it was nice and quiet.

Review 123:Excellent location. Friendly, happy staff.

Review 124:This was my 9th stay at Ellerslie House. It is always nice & peaceful. Good breakfast.
