Reviews for Red Lion Hotel
Review 1:Could do with more staff on reception. Only one lady on wen we booked in and had to leave reception a couple of times unattended.
Review 2:Good location. Breakfast and dinner very good. Clean
Review 3:One of the Breakfast staff was miserable and no one collected empty plates, I had take them myself. Our bed was very uncomfortable and lumpy. The breakfast portions were very small.
Review 4:The reception staff were very nice and friendly
Review 5:My eldest son was married at a local church and the Red Lion provided the wedding reception for family and friends of the bride and groom. It also provided accommodation for family members who had traveled furthest. We found all staff to be extremely helpful and polite. The family room was clean and comfortable. The food provided for all meals including the reception was delicious. Thank you for helping to make this family occasion a memorable one.
Review 6:Room was very worn and the mattress was the worst I've ever slept on with two big dents in it. The bedside cabinets were covered in marks and dents and looked ready for the tip. Not a pleasant environment for a romantic break.
Review 7:Lovely location and pub was great.
Review 8:The room was too warm and there was no thermostat control to adjust (discounting the radiator control which seemed to make no difference when turned to off). Lack of soundproofing - early morning banging of doors.
Review 9:Polite, welcoming and friendly staff. Very good breakfast.
Review 10:Location and staff was excellent, room was first class, clean, bright and well appointed, was slightly disappointed with food served at breakfast, all the help yourself items was fresh but the cooked breakfast came across as a bit of a pre-cooked canteen offering, apart from that exellent staff, exellent surroundings I would definitely stay again
Review 11:Location. Food was excellent, breakfast more than ample. Staff were very friendly, helpful and sensitive to our needs. This hotel has a warm, cosy atmosphere and is very clean and comfortable.
Review 12:The receptionist was a little off until pointed out that her tone of voice was not polite. The room had not been cleaned properly, there was still dust around the card left on the bedside table. Hotel was tired and could do with some updating. Would I have paid full price for a stay..... NO!
Review 13:Breakfast was excellent
Review 14:A very warm welcome from both hotel and restaurant staff. Warm comfortable room with recently refurbished bathroom. Good choice of wholesome food in the restaurant and an enormous breakfast in both variety and quantity - sadly we could not manage the croissants!
Review 15:Minor observation - a slightly overpowering smell of air freshener in the room and corridor (Zoflora?)
Review 16:Nice and warm, comfy bed and pillows, good bathroom and good breakfast, good parking and a good sized room also fairly quiet given its central location.
Review 17:Last minute one night stay as it was cheaper than a return taxi from/to Southampton. Comfy, warm and clean. Nice smile at reception... Couldn't ask for more! Good parking and central Fareham location!
Review 18:we were going to the theatre it was agood location for the venue. The staff were very quick with the service and put themselves out to make sure we were out of the restaurant in time for the performance.
Review 19:The evening meal was ok but steak in ale pie needed more steak. Rooms could do with up dating. Especially bathroom (room 32)
Review 20:Location was good as near to town centre. Reception was welcoming and friendly.
Review 21:Toast was cold,as it took 8 minutes before the vegetarian breakfast arrived and one veggie sausage looked unpleasant as it was mashed in places.
Review 22:I was received by friendly reception staff and when I enquired about the age of the building was informed accordingly.
Review 23:N/A
Review 24:We stayed 4/12/15 my daughter & I in a twin RM on the eve of her wedding.Beautiful wedding breakfast and the hotel offered to move our belonging from the twin room to family room for, he Saturday night stay. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Xmas and both their Breakfast & Table Menu were excellent. My grandson had room service and this was also presented fantastically (cheese board & Club Sandwich with salad) absolute value for money. The staff were very helpful and we seen the manager a few times popping in and out. Thank you for such a nice time.
Review 25:Nothing at all we didn't like.
Review 26:lovely olde worlde inn. Stayed here before and will definitely do so again. Got a good deal, much cheaper than the Premier Inns and the price included a lovely breakfast which is self service and waitress service for anything cooked.
Review 27:The overall cleanliness of the hotel was good, however there was stubble left in our sink from the previous occupant and a milk pot left on the table behind the kettle which obviously hadn't been cleaned properly.
Review 28:All the staff were extremely welcoming, helpful and friendly. We had the family room which was very nice indeed. The food is excellent.
Review 29:Bedrooms dated and tired, breakfast very average, coffee cold, we waited 40min for cooked items. Vegetarian sausages over cooked on the outside but frozen in the middle.Staff argued when we brought it to their attention ! Mentioned it to Reception at checkout, received only a poor apology ! I visit this area regularly but would not stay here again, poor vale for money !.
Review 30:Ground floor public areas, pleasant ad clean.
Review 31:The room that was offered on the website was not the one I was given. A little bit of bad advertising I think. Stayed here a fortnight ago and the experience was not as good.
Review 32:Friendly staff but not the same experience as a couple of weeks ago. I will not be staying again or recommending.
Review 33:Original room but changed with no fuss or bother.
Review 34:Very courteous staff on arrival, managed to change our room with no fuss or bother, facilities were very good and breakfast also. No complaints at all.
Review 35:I cannot possibly list all the problems that I encountered in a mere 2-3 sentences, there are literally too many, so allow me to relate just a few.The first to hit me was the hotel WiFi, 'The Cloud,' (with no other simple quick option, like most hotels offer,) is a joke, and which together with much other irrelevant personal information, including one's date of birth, is compulsory for completion; even the receptionist could not help with either of my devices, whom, it was advertised in the brochure extolling the virtues of said system, would help if, one become completely frustrated at numerous vain attempts at tricking the complicated clumsy and lengthy process into allowing one to get online.Perhaps the main complaint is that most of the time there was NO heating in my room; even on complaining, the warmth that became available after an hour, from an admittedly oversized radiator, was hardly enough to heat a small doll house. It was November in the UK.There is obviously a Serious Central Heating problem in that section of the hotel that urgently needs to be fixed' For 2 days it was too cold to take a shower. (No shampoo or mini bottles of soap anyway, and no shelf in the enclosure on which to put them.)I developed a streaming cold, and because I was told, it was not hotel policy to supply tissues in rooms, I was offered an extra toilet roll instead. In the event I needed two, to my cost.As I sat on the 'Throne,' during my Morning Constitutional, I suddenly realized that I had not completed a cockpit check before take off, and the one toilet roll I had remaining, was on the bedside table!
Review 36:I was warm when under the duvet. (That is until I had to get out of bed in the middle of the night to reach the telephone, which was at the other end of the room from the bed head) to call reception and complain, (both nights) about the ice cold nature of my room radiator. Dinner was good!
Review 37:Our stay was let down by the very poor quality of the cooked evening meals. The cooked full English breakfast was served on a large cold plate. Most of the hotels I have stayed in manage to serve hot food on a hot plate! The breakfast was luke warm and looked like it had been slopped on to the plate. I and my wife could not believe how small the one fried egg we had on our plate looked. We will NOT be staying here again
Review 38:Location and parking was great. Brilliant staff
Review 39:Difficult to use shower control, could do with instruction. When I worked out how to use it the shower went cool mid shower. Also on a very cold day the radiators were turned off!!!!
Review 40:Central location. Well equipped. Great breakfast. Pub/restaurant attached. Plenty of free secure parking.
Review 41:Good sized room, clean, comfortable and good value. Good to see friendly staff and allowing my little pug into the rooms was a huge bonus! Breakfast was also excellent. Only stayed one night for a wedding close by and this hotel made the trip even better.
Review 42:food not really up to standard. breakfast not hot. porridge tasted like rice pudding. serving staff rude and unwilling to accept criticism. i.e. cold coffee.
Review 43:the local amenities
Review 44:Everything is good, staff are friendly, helpful and polite. Hotel is in a very good location with nearby restaurants if you do not want to eat in, but the food is good here and reasonably priced so no need.
Review 45:The hotel is clean and well located for our needs. My partner is disabled and she finds stairs a problem, I asked for and received a ground floor room. The food is very good and there is plenty of choice at breakfast.
Review 46:In the restaurant I had steak fajitas full of Gristleb & fat not very nice, if you stay here go out for something to eat !!!
Review 47:Room ok & parking good
Review 48:Small single room, sash window was wide open and I couldn't close it which was okay because it was soooooo hot in my room! Quite expensive rates for what it is.
Review 49:Helpful staff, carparking on site and okay restaurant. I was working in portchester and this hotel was a good option as I've struggled to find anywhere that's suitable and affordable nearby previously. I will stay here again.
Review 50:We arrived late (approx 2245 ) the female bar attendant lacked humour, any form of charisma and was ineffective as far as the service industry goes. However she was replaced at 2300 by the night person he was polite and extremely helpful. The reception staff were very good as were the breakfast service staff.
Review 51:As described above the hotel and bar areas were spotless together with the rooms and bathroom facilities. We were only there for a short stay but overall we considered the hotel to be excellent and would stay again.
Review 52:not a bad experience, lots of creaking floorboards in corridor around room 6 where we were, so we heard all the guests coming to rooms otherwise a great place to stay
Review 53:nice large room and bathroom, good bar and food, access to town great, definitely book here again, ample parking
Review 54:The breakfast was awful, full English with poached egg, egg was fine therest was either cold, rock hard or like the sausage 2 different coloursbrown and grey, you could cut through the grey side but the brown wassolid, the beans looked like they had been re heated so many times theyhad turned to mushy beans, bacon was hard and very salty, mush roomsrock hard, I was looking forward to breakfast as I had limited time toeat and knew in would be early evening before I had a chance to eatagain, I have no doubt the hotel would offered me another breakfast butI would not have had time to eat it, the food looked like a plate ofreheated left overs from the day before, I travel a lot in my work andthis is now at No 1 spot for the worst food, and I will not be stayingwith this chain of hotels again.
Review 55:Liked everything about this hotel, very comfortable, clean and lovely food. A big thank you to Alison in the restaurant who managed to get us table when they were so busy and for her great service. Would definately stay there again.
Review 56:we asked for two rooms close together and they wern't. access for my Mother in Law who struggles to get around was very difficult since the disabled lift was not working and her room was up some very steep steps
Review 57:Very friendly and help restaurant staff and good food
Review 58:Only minor - the lighting in the room wasn't great.
Review 59:Great hotel, lovely location. Beds are probably the most comfortable one's in a hotel we have slept in. A big plus for me was that the pillows were perfect!
Review 60:On arrival we found the additional bed we had requested had not been put out and when we asked the unhelpful receptionist about it we were told we had to wait until there was sufficient staff until they could get it ready. She seemed put out that my son might want to go to bed early after having a busy day!!! We returned from dinner to find it had been put out but with no bedding.... Que another call to reception!!! My pet hate of hairs around the sink unfortunately came to fruition with numerous dark hairs being found in the sink and on the side...!!
Review 61:The food within the bar area was of a good standard and excellent value for money. The beds and facilities within the room were comfortable and the secure parking was an added bonus
Review 62:Very dated. Small bed for two slightly above average sized people. Single glazed windows over looking main road so noisy and I would imagine, very cold and draughty in the window. Creaky floorboards.
Review 63:Great location - easy to find with its own large car park. Right on town centre. Large room with all you would expect. Pub downstairs with good food. Super breakfast.
Review 64:I'm afraid there were children playing havoc above my room, running around and jumping on and off beds,( I know I used to do it as a child as well) but it worried me when my room was rocking with the vibration of it all, I telephoned downstairs to the staff, and Bless them the children were told to keep quiet, which they did. for 10 minutes.(Bless them) no I can honestly say I really enjoyed my stay.
Review 65:The staff were really nice and the breakfast was great, I would come back again , if I was that way again.
Review 66:Cleaning, the less obvious places should be on the rota for cleaning eg. the lamp holders by the beds.
Review 67:Location, free parking, staff and comfortable bed all good. We stayed before running the Great South Run and they hotel laid on early breakfast for the runners.
Review 68:Booking.com asked us when we wanted to check in we chose 12 but when we got there they said we couldn't check in till 2. I explained we were going to a funeral and needed to get changed. She rather sullenly but quickly found us a room so clearly it wasn't a problem. Breakfast the next morning good value for moneytook way too long to order and then the veggie breakfast came to us with meat on meaning we were late for the crematorium.
Review 69:Good mattress, quiet room and nice breakfast.
Review 70:Not really bad but we had to get to a coach at 05.45 and had expected buffet breakfast as promised, but the information failed to be passed to the night staff and he was hard pressed to supply the food and drink, but he did very well to get us away on time.
Review 71:Quiet, Comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, good food served by very pleasant staff.
Review 72:Staff were miserable. Bed was extremely uncomfortable. Travel kettle in a family room others in our party had a room for 2 and had a large kettle! For the price would expect things like shampoo and body wash. Room very cold on arrival. Bedding hanging over stair rail!
Review 73:On site parking close to town centre. Large room with a double and 2 single beds. Nice breakfast.
Review 74:The matress is very soft and there is no hair dryer in the bathroom.
Review 75:Friendly staff trying to help anytime we ask for. The room was very clean and comfy. Very good breakfast!
Review 76:You obviously had trouble with the drains that were being attended to when my son returned to collect his car. He was trapped inside the car park as the drive was blocked.
Review 77:Excellent staff, food in restaurant and lots of parking.
Review 78:Great staff.A pleasure to chat with the receptionist, who was extremely helpful. My room was just right for me - warm, comfortable and clean with all the usual facilities. The bed was very comfy and breakfast the next morning was a veritable feast!
Review 79:A nice room but the bed was not as comfortable as hoped and creaked loudly every time you moved during the night.
Review 80:The hotel location is in a nice spot.
Review 81:I liked the friendliness of all the staff the breakfast was great we did not eat in at night as we were visiting family but had a drink in the evening in the lounge very pleasant
Review 82:We arrived on a Saturday. Had no hot water that night for showers and no hot water the following morning. No staff informed us that there was any problem.
Review 83:Location
Review 84:Room needed a better clean - old shampoo bottles beside the wardrobe. Sheets/bedding could have been cleaner and matress lumpy.
Review 85:Good sized room. Good town centre location. Friendly staff
Review 86:Food in pub was mediocre, probably about the same standard as a Wetherspoons, which was just up the road, but twice the price, Chef managed to put more water than poached egg on my plate at breakfast which rendered the rest of my food inedible. Got the apparently dreaded Room 25 on arrival, which was actually OK albeit a bit minging. Most disappointing was the fact that we were not informed by our receptionist that we could have accessed gym/pool facilities, only noticed after we had left the hotel when we checked our car parking exit pass. A shame, because we had specially brought our togs only to assume we had made a mistake when we daw the hotel structure.
Review 87:Pub was good for 'blow ins', staff in pub were warm and polite. Pub atmosphere was friendly and safe. Easy access to Ferry and M27. Nice free car park. Nice choice of options for breakfast and the fresh fruit salad was lovely. Good value for money at £70 for 2 people including breakfast.
Review 88:Clean but had not been dusted..other than that we were very happy
Review 89:Stayed at this hotel many times...Warm friendly place to stay.quite... .staff were very polite and helpful ..room was very nice breakfast was lovely.will be staying there a lot more..
Review 90:I thought that the carpets in our room could do with a freshen up, but the towels in the bathroom were super.
Review 91:Staff were all helpful and pleasant especially the staff in the restaurant. Good food and wine most enjoyable evening.
Review 92:Nothing to put in this space.
Review 93:Everything you want from a hotel was here at the Red Lion, from friendly staff to excellent food. The staff, in particular could not do enough for us. We would not hesitate to stay their again nor would we have any qualms about recommending it to others.
Review 94:Room signage was not clear i.e rooms 62-65 were signed 62,65 - so when I was in 64 I had trouble finding it - with bags, after a long drive, not brilliant.
Review 95:Location was great, lots of parking, nothing looked dated
Review 96:* The room was grubby! * The lighting in the room bad * Had to unplug the lamp to plug in my hairdryer * Carpet grubby bits on carpet had to keep my shoes on and put a towel beside the bed to step onto * Couldn't get wifi although it was supposed to be there * Food dreadful * it smelt in the reception area and looked generally grubby * woken at 5.30 to scraping of chairs in the area below room 22 * didn't stay for breakfast left at 6.45 to get to site very sleepy man on reception so didn't get into a dialogue with him
Review 97:From the photo the Red Lion looked good The staff in the restaurant were friendly THAT IS ALL I LIKED * Food bad * Ice cream and Pino Grigio good
Review 98:Disappointed that my room had no heating on, cold when first went in. Asked at reception and they said we only turn room heating on if asked by guests. Next morning woke up in a cold room ! Public areas refurbished but not guest rooms.
Review 99:Public areas well presented clean and fresh, plenty of room in bar area, soft seating, good value good offer.
Review 100:Although I was only there for one night and therefore I booked a cheap room, doesn't mean that there is less need to clean it properly. The bed spread had stains in it and the over all feel of the room was unpleasant.
Review 101:Not so much a bad experience but the bathroom could have done with abit of a sprucing up, looked like some edgeing under the radiator had come off & looked raggy!
Review 102:Staff helpful & approachable. Bedroom comfortable & clean. Food very good.
Review 103:Bed uncomfortable. Would advise you either get new beds or a topper for comfort.
Review 104:Friendly staff who are happy to help you, serve you & in general interact with customers.
Review 105:The bed needed to be replaced as it gave me a bad back and very little sleep.
Review 106:As a single person staying in the hotel, the staff were lovely and very accommodating.
Review 107:Initial helpful contact before arrival with staff who advised us on location regarding autobus station (we were travalling without a car to avoid re-adaptation to British road rules). Excellent service from staff and an amicable atmosphere. Fareham is a fine city very close to Portsmouth. The city should be proud of this unpretentious and quality inn which is also in a very central yet quiet section.
Review 108:Bearing in mind the size of the bedroom, we couldn't believe it had a normal sized double bed that creaked every time we turned over. It warrants a king or even queen sized bed.
Review 109:Massive bedroom, there was loads of room
Review 110:we had to move rooms very late at night due to noise coming from next door however we realise this is not the hotel's fault
Review 111:Comfortable rooms and good location
Review 112:Shower curtain didn't close properly which meant the bathroom floor became flooded with water with nowhere to drain away. This was obviously a longstanding problem because the flooring was discoloured.
Review 113:Very friendly and helpful staff. Ideal location.
Review 114:Had a leak in through the extractor fan when it rained - bit worrying but hopefully they've got straight on with rectifying that. Room at front of hotel meant a lot of noise from people hanging around until all hours.
Review 115:Meals were lovely; breakfasts were excellent. Decor tasteful. Room was a good size.
Review 116:I was made to feel very welcome and found the staff helpful. I particularly liked overhearing the breakfast staff offer someone childrens' cutlery in the dining room. A small touch but it spoke volumes about the care you take.
Review 117:Lovely hotel with really friendly, helpful staff. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
Review 118:Bed was really uncomfortable. Old mattress with springs poking up. Bathroom was very tired.
Review 119:Staff were lovely & very helpful. Pleasantly appointed hotel. Good breakfast included in the price.
Review 120:Insufficient parking places. Needs serious modernisation. New carpets throughout. At night the cold water tap produced very hot water. probable pipes are adjacent. Spaying wooden dining tables with cleaner and wiping gives them a sticky feel. The dining room chairs where an assortment of styles. This hotel could potential be much better.
Review 121:Location and old world atmosphere. The Windrush room was of good size with nice views.
Review 122:There was nothing to dislike
Review 123:The place had a very cosy welcoming feel to it, it was very clean, the beds were very comfortable. The food was delicious. We had a very pleasant stay
Review 124:There was no fridge in our room.
Review 125:Very good breakfast. They even had gluten free bread available. The bed was comfortable and the room was very spacious.
Review 126:Enjoyed use of nearby swimming pool. Nice meal in the restaraunt. When making dinner reservation we were advised of a large coach party booked for the same time. Pleased to report that this did not affect the service received.
Review 127:Extra helpful night staff for booking in. The porter and breakfast staff were most accommodating too because I am disabled this makes all the difference. So thank you very much.
Review 128:I think the reception staff should have known where the local museum was located The WiFi worked on arrival but not for the rest of my stay
Review 129:The location
Review 130:Windows missing catches so didn't close properly and toilet seat was loose full English could be better as came out to quick to be freshly cooked (I am a chef myself)
Review 131:Staff very helpful after forgetting extra bed for our son
