Reviews for L'Ecailler

Review 1:Great location, good two star hotel. Safe and warm (in December/January) and quiet. We walked to and from all needed locations in Cherbourg - La Cite de la Mer, train station, shops, restaurants, harbour...

Review 2:Rooms could do with a bit of renovation. Shower-head holder and/or bath plug would have been good!

Review 3:The ferry port is just 5 mins away - Handy for the early morning ferry.

Review 4:Not a 'bad' experience, however there are no bedrooms on the ground floor and no lift so my mobility impaired mother struggled to climb a dimly lit staircase to the first floor. Not suitable for the fully disabled.

Review 5:Location to ferry port very convenient and far enough away from port reception not to be too bothered by lorries arriving in early hours. Restaurant served adequat food. Rooms warm, bathrooms colourful! We would definitely stay there again.

Review 6:shower broken, room tiny, toilet so small had difficulty closing door. restaurant expensive, poor choice ,difficulty understanding menu, not offered English option

Review 7:adjacent to ferry terminal

Review 8:No laundry service (of any kind); very uncomfortable pillows (large and square instead of rectangle); no upper bedsheet (just an overly-warm duvet); no mirror outside of the bathroom (for doing make-up while husband is showering).

Review 9:The location is very near the ferry port; the staff were friendly.

Review 10:toilet small and flushing system turned down so difficult to flush. room very small and poorly decorated. table cloth at breakfast full of holes. .

Review 11:Balcony with view of harbour was very good Bed was comfortable

Review 12:I could not get any food of hot drinks when I arrived at 10pm, in spite of them knowing time of arrival. There were also cheaper rooms available. Nor would they take english credit card.

Review 13:The location

Review 14:Attached hotel was a little expensive particularly for a family meal.

Review 15:Basic but confortable. Good location for the ferry for an early morning start.

Review 16:staff not happy to be waiting for guests arriving on late ferry. hotel in darkness on arrival no welcome at all

Review 17:Only the fact that it was closest to the ferry terminal

Review 18:We booked the hotel direct. Did not have a reply by email. When we arrived they tried to up the cost of the room. We disputed and then we had the rooms at the advertised price. They said their internet was down. But we were not happy as I had telephoned to confirm.

Review 19:The rooms were very clean and warm. Very close to the Ferry port. Central to all facilities.

Review 20:No facilities at 8.45 in the evening after a long journey, response was that staff are tired, this is not our problem!

Review 21:Very comfortable beds and good location

Review 22:Room and bathroom were basic but clean, and the cost reflected that. i.e. not expensive.

Review 23:The best thing is the proximity to the port and a good choice of restaurants.

Review 24:Previous reviews which were poor But not what we found at all

Review 25:Great stop for ferry early morning good bar and restaurant quiet at night as only traffic is ferry which doesn't come in till 6.30 am

Review 26:This isn't a bad experience but the menu, although good, is expensive which makes us go elsewhere for dinner. this is a shame because we would like to give our custom to the hotel.

Review 27:The position is perfect for us. We are frequent travellers on the ferries and therefore the hotel is an ideal stop-over.

Review 28:Moody and suspicious staff & no idea of what a late checkout is or why we would request one. No lift. No room for stroller. Tiny bathtub.

Review 29:Location close to ferry terminal. Warmed up room.

Review 30:No air con. Was over 30 degrees in the room with no possibility of opening a window. Only the door which lead out onto a balcony that other rooms shared so not very safe.

Review 31:Location was great, room quiet and not disturbed

Review 32:Booked twin rooms but were given doubles. No prior notification given to warn us of this. It was warm so had to keep the window open most of the time, noise from extractor fan outside was unbearable.

Review 33:Location

Review 34:Very convenient for a morning ferry. Lots of local restaurants and a few paces from the beach. The family room was good for two grandparents and two grandchildren of 11 and 9.

Review 35:We were travelling with two babies of 15 months and 2.3 years. We had asked for a cot to be put into the room. This was not there. We asked about it and were told that they had not confirmed availability of a cot. No offer was made to help us accommodate the babies in the room. The noise of lorries passing the window went on all night. TYhe window had to remain open all night as it was hot and the air conditioning failed to operate. There were no staff on duty to help. No tea or drink making facilities were available during the night. The breakfast was verging on stingy. We would not recommend this hotel to families.and would definitely not stay there again.

Review 36:Breakfast served too late. Perhaps a little too basic. Not enough staff in the hotel. The price was not commensurate with the type of room ie. expensive for what it is.

Review 37:Excellent location. Excellent restaurant. Balcony pleasant.

Review 38:This is a restaurant that rents a few rooms, not a hotel or B&B. The signage was terrible, the desk clerk indifferent, the facilities, adequate.

Review 39:We were able to wake up, eat a nice early breakfast and stumble onto our ferry. No stress departure is worth it.

Review 40:Room was shabby( but clean) Door didn't lock. Breakfast poor value. Hot but can't leave French window open as communal balcony. Quite expensive.

Review 41:Staff ( from reastaurant) friendly enough. Ok for an overnight stop for/from ferry

Review 42:The only downside was no provision of tea or coffee facilities in the room-surely one of the first things appreciated after travelling long distances.

Review 43:A choice of restaurants /bars all in easy walking distance.

Review 44:The main receptionist was terribly grumpy. He never once smiled and on 3 occasions when we passed by, he didn't even look up in our direction.

Review 45:Handy for ferry and parking (? mid summer)

Review 46:No one around to deal with any problems, nowhere to get a drink in the evening, alcoholic or non-alcoholic. The staff we did locate were not very friendly or helpful. No WiFi or hairdryer as advertised. Would not stay here again, there are plenty of other hotels nearby for the same price.

Review 47:Room was clean.

Review 48:Bed a little hard for our liking. The noise from the ferry traffic was a bit of disturbance - but then, it's to be expected as it's ideally located for the ferry terminal!!

Review 49:Very close to the Caen/Ouistreham ferry port. Well presented room, although a little basic. Perfect location for overnight stop before of after ferry crossing and close to restaurants, bars etc.

Review 50:Do NOT breakfast here. It was dire. But....there is a bar next door which opens up in the morning EARLY, and it is packed for breakfast. Need i say more.

Review 51:location superb, only few hundred yards from ferry terminal.

Review 52:0.75€ per person per night additional tax above the quoted price. Your booking states parking ON SITE, we had to park in a public car park which was full when we arrived. Poor standard of maintenance in the rooms with defects not attended to promptly. We had to move rooms because of water coming through the ceiling.

Review 53:Location. Close proximity of bars & restaurants. Very close to ferry home.

Review 54:The hotel room was bright, well located as we had to take the ferry in the morning. The room was also rather new but the bathroom could do with some refurbishments despite being clean.

Review 55:*Breakfast. Expensive for a hot drink, glass of juice, bowl of cereal, croissant and slice of bread. No meats, cheese or fruit on offer. *No tea or coffee making facilities in room. *Early closing hours in restaurant/pub - 'kick out' at 10pm. *Slow service in restaurant - very few staff. *Toilet in a 'cupboard' - very cramped and without ventilation.

Review 56:Free Parking Easy access

Review 57:Very friendly, great restaurant on site, clean, comfortable accommodation. Superb location for the ferry terminal. Would definately use again! Recommended overnight accommodation

Review 58:As the Hotel is close to the Ferry Port it's very noisy with lorries passing all through the night

Review 59:The closeness to the Ferry Port Has a very good Restaurant

Review 60:It is a typical old fashioned French hotel. It is very basic but very friendly. After 10.00pm at night there is noting to eat. It is not just this hotel but every hotel and restrauant in the town closes then so if you are arriving late make sure you eat before you check in.

Review 61:It is very close to the ferry port so it works well for me. Pets are welcome so also useful. I will stay again.

Review 62:Linoleum floors in bedroom. Unclean carpets on stairs. Smell from restaurant. Unsecure bedroom door. Hotel almost empty, room charge started at 38 Euros. Booking.com charge 55 Euros?

Review 63:Good Location

Review 64:The wifi we were told needed no password, did, so we couldn't get a connection .

Review 65:Adjoins the port where the ferry from Portsmouth arrives, so perfect for spending the night before sailing or on late evening arrival. The night porter had waited for us to arrive although there appeared to be no other guests.

Review 66:Very satisfactory stay of only one night. Room pleasant with no frills.Bathroom clean with good facilities. Helpful staff. Restaurant excellent with good service and good food. We would go there again.

Review 67:Booking.com confirmation stated free toiletries, so I didn't take my main luggage in with me - but there were no toiletries provided!

Review 68:Convenient location for ferry terminal, comfortable, clean room, very pleasant evening meal served by polite, attentive staff

Review 69:Although adequate, the room was basic but there's not much scope for improvement in such an old building. This did not deter from good night's rest!

Review 70:Proximity to ferry terminal. Friendly staff and atmosphere, excellent restaurant. Despite being on a busy road junction there was surprisingly very little noise.

Review 71:Bathroom was very tired and there appeared to be no hot water until the following morning.

Review 72:The location is the big plus for this hotel, although the free car park over the road might be an issue for some if no spaces are available at some times of the year. A cheap, basic continental breakfast can be prebooked on arrival.

Review 73:Very old hotel, no carpet and plastic type curtains that didn't close properly. Reception not manned when we arrived and closed with the shutters down when we went out for our evening meal. Would never stay at this hotel again.

Review 74:Close to the port.

Review 75:The room, decor and furnishings were all in need of an upgrade.

Review 76:Location was excellent and the price very reasonable. Facilities and room were adequate and clean.

Review 77:Very basic, small toilet and bathroom difficult to move inside them. Generaly shaby eg things stuck in place with evident glue missing light shade etc. Told breakfast was 7.00 am some signs agreed some said 7.30 madam was suprised to see us at 7.00 food 7.15

Review 78:Close to the ferry port. Near to selection of good restaurants, including their own. Room bed etc clean. Room quiet.

Review 79:no lift shower had no bracket to hang from. toilet very difficult to use do to narrowness of cubicle and the door opening inwards.

Review 80:proximity to the port and our favourite restaurant.

Review 81:Woken at 5.00am by dustmen who were very noisy. Very disappointed with the restaurant - crab obviously frozen - staff not interested - expensive.

Review 82:Bedroom clean and adequate - good location in centre of Ouistreham and very convenient for Brittany Ferry Crossing.

Review 83:I particularly asked for a room at the front of the hotel when I booked in advance, so that I could keep an eye on our heavily laden car parked infront of the hotel. When we arrived the staff took our money for the room, THEN told us we could not have a room at the front.

Review 84:Ease of journey to ferry port

Review 85:Bedroom cramped with one small upright chair Unable to use thbathroom owing to a bad smell of drains No telephone No staff to contact overnight. Owing to poor sleep we left the room at 7.00 a.m. when receptionist came on duty. She could not get past the shutter on the counter to switch on the lights so that my wife had to wash and use the toilet downstairs with the receptionist holding open the door to provide daylight. No management around to whom to complain .We were charged your quoted rate of 70euros whereas the rate shown outside the hotel in the room and on the counter was 38 euros. Please let us have your explanation of your co

Review 86:Nothing

Review 87:Toilet too small. Shower small but just ok. Lights in the toilet disturb sleepers in the same room. Breakfast from 0730 but that's too late to check in at the ferry.

Review 88:Staff very friendly. Room large, beds very comfortable. Bathroom enormous with plenty of clean towels etc Hairdryer available on request Free WiFi a bonus Stopped getting off the ferry and again the night before we left for the UK. Free Parking where we could see the car from our room Would CERTAINLY recommend. I think some people nit-pick with their comments. Value for Money: Excellent

Review 89:We had to askt for plates for breakfast, she brought 2 and we where 3 persons. Breakfast nearly in the laundry...Open door between theese facilities felt unfresch. They did´nt fill up the breakfast if we didn´t askt for more. The woman who served was not in a good service mode.

Review 90:I had a good bed, very important for me.

Review 91:No carpets in the room. Front of the hotel very noisy with lorries passing all night in front of the hotel. Unable to keep window open due to this.

Review 92:Room was very clean Restaurant was excellent

Review 93:Worst hotel stay on my trip. Wifi did not work, room smelled of smoke, had to sleep with the window open but truck traffic work me frequently. When I complained about the deficiencies and asked to use the wifi in the restaurant the "director" refused and threatened to throw me out of the hotel at 10pm. The room was dirty. There was mould and hair in the bathroom. The WC could only be used with the door open as the door swung too close the the loo. I left a day early because I was not willing to let the experience ruin my vacation.

Review 94:Rather an off hand greeting from an overworked staff member busy in the dining room ass well as reception but OK in the end. The extractor fan on the roof outside our bed room window was a bit noisy. Happily it turned off eventually.. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm- mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm- mmmmm

Review 95:Room more than OK. Dining room looks good.Parking on a busy evening was quite difficult but eventually OK. Price reasonable. Sometimes we stay at Le Phare but have gone off it.bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Review 96:the "en suite facilities" which were little more than very old items ,sink and shower avocado green in a small cupboard separated from room with a curtain and a toilet in another cupboard Not since Paris in the 60's, 70's have I seen such facilities!.

Review 97:the location, near to the port

Review 98:Price, walk-ins were cheaper. Food/meals expensive, though plenty of restaurants nearby. Early breakfast not available.

Review 99:Location, and free parking opposite

Review 100:Had to find person for check in, seem really short staffed. No lift, difficult to get up to second floor on crutches and no staff help. Got barked at by man on reception when we came back in as he didn't know who was staying at the hotel. Problem with quick checkout is that you just drop room key in basket on desk as no one there.

Review 101:Easy to get to Caen and handy for anyone arriving or getting on ferry. En suite facilities small but good shower. Great Bar Tabac next door run by same staff, who are mostly friendly, and reasonably priced. Didn't try restaurant at hotel as cheaper to eat next door. Good, free car park right opposite hotel. Pay in advance so quick check out.

Review 102:Room was dirty, wallpaper hanging off, dirty rag behind heater, paintwork chipped, plug in bath faulty, shower fell off the wall, shower attachment dirty, sink plug hole dirty tap dirty, the whole room was well below standard ,in need of redecorating ,will not be going again.reception closed,no staff about to complain,we slept on top of the bed,a very bad experience

Review 103:Shower sprayed everywhere when turned on (room 4). Room 6 smelled ofcigarette smoke and bed was very small as was the loo. Thought 120 euroswas a bit high for this room, although room 4 not too bad at 70 euros.

Review 104:Location and cleanliness. Very 'French' feel about it and veryconvenient for ferry. Liked the door opening onto balcony.

Review 105:Very basic needs redecorating and unfortunately had a very loud person next door who eventually went quiet at gone twelve and started again at four in morning. Although not hotels fault find it odd that they put all guest in rooms next to each other when hotel was not even half full

Review 106:Closeness to port and facilities around

Review 107:Hotel is literally on the doorstep of the port. Perfect location. Staff were very helpful and polite. Rooms was basic but clean and tidy. Would definitely stay again.

Review 108:No private car park Hole in the door repaired with tissue and Sellotape Dirty floor Poor shower Tired decoration Used rags behind the radiator Broken shower fitting Noisy toilets heard throughout the hotel Washing on the stairs

Review 109:Position

Review 110:Bath was tiny, shower rail was loose and too low to stand under. You have to pay up front without seeing the room. Your asked if you want breakfast when you check in, say no, it's dreadfull!!!!! Male receptionist rude and aggressive!!!!

Review 111:Nothing!!

Review 112:The hotel is looking a bit worn and in need of decoration. Having said that for a 1 night stop over it is adequate.

Review 113:Good location for jumping on the Ferry and also a number of restaurants close by including the restaurant linked to the hotel. Free WiFi. We had a good sized family room. (2 Adults and 2 Children)

Review 114:However, the hotel is above a restaurant right on the seafront so thenoise is awful. All night you hear cars and mopeds and the closing ofthe restaurants shutters seemed to go on for about 15 minutes. The roomsare very very basic. No comforts at all. No cot provided for a toddler. The smell of smoke in the room was horrific. Absolutely no hot water at830 in the morning. 2 family rooms requested but put on differentfloors... Breakfasts the next morning was definitely not worth 8 euros.Croissants were put on the table - 4 between 6 of us. There was 1cereal, juice and yoghurt. We were put on a table next to a Hoover andall the cleaning equipment. All in all an awful hotel which Iwouldn't recommend to anyone.

Review 115:The location of this hotel was great for a late night arrival onthe ferry.

Review 116:Room smelt, no room service although this was advertised in hotel reception. Bathroom not clean.

Review 117:Very central location. Bedding was clean and beds comfortable

Review 118:Bedroom very small, Bathroom also and bath although not unclean did not invite me to partake of it. Food in the restaurant overpriced.

Review 119:Excellent location

Review 120:The staff were rude and unhelpful. When I asked about the travel cot which I had requested when booking, the staff reluctantly got it from a dusty cupboard and left me with it in the room to put up.

Review 121:The beds were clean and comfortable

Review 122:Very small shower/toilet area in room allocated to one group of family- the other room had a much larger bathroom.

Review 123:Cleanliness, closeness to ferry - couldn't have been any nearer. Comfortable beds meant a good nights sleep ( once the evenings fireworks had been let off!!). Will recommend L'Ecailler at every opportunity.

Review 124:Smell of smoke in the rooms Very basic Paid 120 euro for a family room & was worse than staying in a travel lodge Stuffy rooms Poor wi-fi could not connect Horrible smell through out the hotel

Review 125:Right next to the port for early morning ferry Bedding & bathroom was clean

Review 126:Includes free parking? this is in a car park opposite which was full with a market when we arrived. Very rushed at check in and senior waiter was very abrupt and snatched food back when we told him we didn't have what had been ordered. What came back after was cold and inedible. Room very very small

Review 127:Excellent location close to ferry port Waiters in general were pleasant and unobtrusive (but not senior staff who were rude and abrupt)

Review 128:This hotel is as close as you an get to the ferry port as is possible to get. 3 minutes drive from port entrance. Twice out of three times we've stayed, our window has looked onto municipal car park across the road. Reassuring to see the car safe before we bedded down for the night?

Review 129:no tea and coffee in room breakfast selection poor

Review 130:location' facilities and helpful staff provided secure parking for my motorcycle i would stay again no problem

Review 131:There was a slight smell of smoke in our last room and as non smokers we noticed it but it was only slight .

Review 132:We like the nearness to the ferry the size of the rooms the very old French feel to the hotel and if you stop for breakfast great value for money also parking is near and safe ,

Review 133:Breakfast was poor served by person from laundry with door open washing machine and tumble dryers going had to ask for lots of things ie milk sugar etc

Review 134:It was fine for 1 night stopover

Review 135:Arrived off the ferry with car laden with stuff. Manager on reception was extremely helpful and sent someone out to my car to help bring bags in. The room was bright, cheerful and airy with windows that actually opened (as opposed to new 'health and safety' ones that only open an inch) with nice view out over the central place of Ouistreham. Appreciated the fact that the establishment was very dog-friendly.

Review 136:room on ferry was bigger. noise levels at three a.m as guests upstairs came in threw shoes on floor and had bath/shower., lorries out in back lane starting up at five a.m. 'balcony' was a joke - it looked out onto a tin roof and was literally a safeguard to stop you falling out of the window if you opened it. I deliberately chose to stay overnight in France as I had a long drive the following day and I find sleeping on the ferry difficult. After about thw, max three hours sleep, I had to get a cabin on the ferry next day to try to get a bit more sleep before the three hundred and fifty mile drive home. Bit of a waste of money. Dover next time for me.

Review 137:Location close to ferry and restaurants
