Reviews for Hotel Best Western La Mare O Poissons

Review 1:Great location, geared up for ferry passengers as it is close to the port and excellent restaurant. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room which is unusual for France.

Review 2:Could have done with a bit more space. Bathroom also whilst being a modern "pod" was basic. No bath. Just the shower

Review 3:Hotel location - near ferry port

Review 4:Thought the breakfast was a bit pricey for what was on offer.

Review 5:The staff where very helpful and friendly. The evening meal was excellent.Hotel location ideal for access to the Ferry terminal.

Review 6:No English tv channels.

Review 7:We have stayed at this hotel 3 times, and have not been disappointed. Always clean, staff are friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent. Would highly recommend this hotel, only a few minutes to the ferry port.

Review 8:Some of the breakfast was cold - the bacon and scrambled eggs, even in heated containers. The coffee from a flask was awful.

Review 9:Location near the ferry port. Quiet position.

Review 10:Excellent restaurant. Good location for ferry terminal. Delighted to find that our previous comments regarding lack of spoons in the room and inadequate milk for an overnight stay had been taken on board. Bravo booking.com and Bravo Best Western!

Review 11:Being woken at 1.30 am by deliveries either to the hotel or next door. Small room no fridge

Review 12:The friendliness of the staff and comfort of the bed, also tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Super evening meal

Review 13:Very proper restaurant woukd have liked a simpler and lighter menu but the port has numerous restaurants for an easy meal.

Review 14:Covenience of location to the Ferry Port, friendliness of the staff, big comfy bed, clean room, good wifi, secure parking....

Review 15:The staff were friendly but also efficient and helpful - offering extra help with my Wi Fi connection on my laptop. The restaurant was excellent with very good, attentive service and delicious food.

Review 16:The restaurant! A total rip off. Poor service. VERY expensive for the poor quality mostly inedible pretty coloured meals. My fois gras was still wrapped in its cellophane! The sweet white wine by the glass to accompany the fois gras was an Alsace and didn't compliment the fois gras. Neither did the cheese on toast. The hotel say that the restaurant is run separately......I feel that with the same name and adjoined this is very misleading! A good cop out from taking responsibility and looking after its guests.Expensive poor quality aperitifs. ( no lemon in G&T ...very poor kir) There is no other restaurant nearby so for the future a problem with staying here again.

Review 17:Secure parking, comfortable quiet room.

Review 18:Only possible improvement would be tea making facility in room

Review 19:Everything! Beautiful hotel, pretty location, room well appointed and spotlessly clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Ate in one of hotels bistros across the river - also excellent

Review 20:Ideal location for overnight stop to catch the early morning ferry. Plenty of car parking space. Hotel room was OK for 1 night not that big- facilities and cleanliness were very good

Review 21:Location and secure parking. Ground floor comfortable quiet room. Good selection for breakfast including scrambled eggs, sausage ,bacon and pancakes. Ps HP brown sauce would be nice with bacon and eggs.

Review 22:Not any at all, but, it would be very helpful if we could get a UK based TV service [BBC or ITV] for onward travel to UK in the area of meteo [weather] and travel disruption, so BBC South would be idea, out of Portsmouth area.

Review 23:Everything. I have stayed at this hotel many times and each time I have had nothing but excellent facilities. The staff are 100% committed to customer satisfaction. Not only have I used it for solo travelling but also for my family and accompanying grandchildren who all love the place. Future customers egh?

Review 24:Restaurant over-priced and not good enough for the money. I don't mind paying a lot for good food, but this was heavy and unimaginative. The suggested cocktail/aperitif sounded fabulous but cheekily came in a half-size 'tasting' glass ... disappointing.

Review 25:The room was clean, and comfortable whilst still being cheap.

Review 26:No kettle in the room, shower room extremely small no room to dress or dry yourself properly and the drains smelt terrible. No CNN or BBCworld news on the TV. Was not told we needed to book a table for dinner and was put into th dining annex, very plain room with no atmosphere.

Review 27:The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 28:Although the service in the restaurant was a little hesitant the food was superb. It was well presented and tasted great. The staff on reception were friendly and efficient.

Review 29:So convenient for Ouistreham that we have used it several times. Breakfast is a bit pricey but delicious and the accommodation is comfortable and clean.

Review 30:Nothing at all!

Review 31:Excellent dinner. The dozen oysters were probably the best I have ever eaten in France, or indeed anywhere. Easy access to the car ferry terminal. Good parking.

Review 32:The room was functional but not as clean as it could be there were many cobwebs, the wifi was complicated to access.

Review 33:We liked the location, near the ferry and the road out of Ouistreham .

Review 34:no food available on sunday evening and nearest restaurant open too far to walk.

Review 35:a very convenient location for the ferry. reception staff very welcoming and helpful. Good value breakfast.

Review 36:Outside of the hotel is drab, not well maintained, and uninviting. Colour scheme of bedrooms is dark, dull and unapealing.

Review 37:Convenient for car ferry. Cheap

Review 38:The parking is limited and quite snug but free, so not complaining.

Review 39:We liked the location which is very close to the ferry port. The room was of a reasonable size and had a small but very functional bathroom. There were tea making facilities which is unusual in French hotels but very welcome after a very cold and wet journey. We didn't eat in the restaurant as it was fully booked but it is only a 15 minute walk to the 'town' where a range of eateries can be found. Breakfast was a bit rushed for us as we had to catch the early morning ferry. The buffet style room opens at 0630 and had a good selection to choose from. Miniature pastries, cold cuts and bacon or eggs from the hot plate. Fresh coffee in flasks. It was a good one for the last morning of our holiday. Last but not least was the staff; very friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. We will definitely use this hotel again in the future.

Review 40:It is essential to have more staff at breakfast time. One person has to man the reception desk and attend to the breakfast room. No available plates near the buffet. Guests had to raid the laid tables for more plates and cutlery. Ludicrous! No one to clear tables. When we ran out of croissants, the receptionist/breakfast server attempted to heat more. Because of her reception duties, these burned and by that time the guest had given up! Had to eat surrounded by dirty cereal bowls, fruit juice glasses and plate used for fried breakfast before raiding other tables for a plate for bread, etc. Apparently despite complaints no-one from Head Office pays any attention. Perhaps if the hotel were not so well placed for the ferry they would have to.

Review 41:Proximity to ferry. Quiet. Excellent welcome and helpful staff. Spotlessly clean. Free wifi.

Review 42:No-one appeared to be responsible for the breakfast room and were not keeping a watch on what was running out and replenishing as needed. Burnt and inedible croissants were put out after first complaint from another guest and eventually replaced as we were leaving. French hotels don't understand that tea has to be made with boiling water and provide a kettle rather than merely hot water. The internet access does not 'hold' from one session to another requiring a new registration each time. It's a nuisance but the access is fast.

Review 43:We were very happy with our stay at Best Western. The room, facilities and restaurant for dining were excellent. Comfortable beds, and good soundproofing contributed to a peaceful night's sleep. Excellent dinner and not too pricey.

Review 44:Convenient to Ferry terminal.Rooms good for dogs with grass areas just by the hotel for exercising the dog on a lead.Restaurant served lovely food this time better than last year

Review 45:Noisy air conditioning that terrified our dog so I had to put her into our car to sleep. Food and drinks were awfully expensive.

Review 46:The location was good for both central Ouistreham and the Ferries

Review 47:Room could have been cleaner. There were long hairs all over the floor and the bathroom door was filthy.

Review 48:Nice rooms and excellent location for the ferry.

Review 49:Arriving on a Sunday after a long days journey to find the restaurant closed which meant a 20 min walk to a restaurant. On booking told 1euro tourist tax each but on arrival had to pay 1.50e each

Review 50:No bad experience.

Review 51:The location is well placed for the ferry terminal, just a few minutes away. The spacious room, comfortable bed and spotless bathroom easy to control room temperature.Very modern in style. We liked the kettle etc,not a standard in French hotels,we were able to make a coffee before setting off for our early ferry. The three course meal for€26 was very good value.Receptionist very helpful and welcoming, answered our questions about the area,we intend to return to this hotel and use as a base to explore this interesting area.

Review 52:After a 200 mile journey in inclement weather we were looking forward to an evening meal and a comfortable night. Such thoughts were dispelled on being told that at 7.40pm the restaurant was closed and there were no alternative arrangements for food. The person in charge of the restaurant was curt and uncommunicative and in my opinion she would benefit from a course in customer relations. It was suggested we should find somewhere in the centre of the town to eat. Observing the weather and possible difficulties in parking in a strange town this did not appeal. Had I wished a B&B establishment I would have booked rather than what I thought was a hotel with normal .facilities. The attitude of the staff reminded me of English hotel management in the Eighties

Review 53:The value for money of a one night stop near the ferry port, friendly with pleasant accommodation facilities and staff. Enabled holiday in France to begin in a refreshed manner.

Review 54:Excellent position if using Portsmouth / Caen ferry. We've used it several times knowing that we have somewhere close to the port for either the early morning boat or arriving in the evening and wanting to rest before day's driving. Secure car park very useful.

Review 55:Very near to the ferry but very quiet. Fantastic breakfast and lovely room. We were just passing through but actually it is well worth a longer stay.

Review 56:This is the second time we have stayed here and it is not up to the standard of most Best Western hotels. No bar facilities and we ordered two glasses of red wine that were just undrinkable we handed them back. the whole hotel smelt of cooking lamb when we arrived and next morning the smell still hung around. I asked the receptionist why couldn't they open some windows! She said they were not allowed to open the huge double doors.

Review 57:Location is very good as you pile off the ferry so convenient.

Review 58:Only minor moan all t.v. channels in french, maybe a news channel would have helped

Review 59:Excellent location 5 minutes from ferry, friendly staff comfortable bed and good breakfast would certainly recommend

Review 60:Very friendly and helpful staff. We have three young children and the hotel accommodated our needs superbly. The location is also fantastic if getting the ferry. It made for a great final night of our holiday.

Review 61:On our arrival at the hotel on Sunday, after two days of driving, we were informed that the restaurant was shut for the evening and we would have to find somewhere in town, only to find out that the location of this hotel was either a drive into the centre or a 15/20 minute walk. On booking, it should have been made clear that there was no restaurant available on a Sunday evening and that you have to walk a good 15/20 minutes along a grassy roadside to find a restaurant.

Review 62:The hotel was fine.

Review 63:No problems.

Review 64:Location, ease of access from ferry, efficiency of all staff and especially the friendliness of the cleaning ladies we met - they were super. Decent breakfast choice too!

Review 65:Not at the standard we are used to of Best Western. Short of staff, we waited over 15 minutes to check in and there was quite a Q, good for me as I was at the front. Nice staff just not enough people around.

Review 66:Conveniently placed at Ouisterham as you tip off the ferry from Portsmouth.

Review 67:Bathroom too small and there was no bath. Feels more like a 2 star than 3 star hotel.

Review 68:Well located for travelling with Brittany Ferries. A short walk (20 to 30 mins) to the sea.

Review 69:Convenient for the ferry and a good standard of facilities, breakfast good, dinner good but a bit pricey but fits with the quality of the hotel. Staff always pleasant.

Review 70:Parking can be a little difficult. Not for disabled travellers.

Review 71:Breakfast is fantastic. Both the quality of the food and also the way the breakfast is laid out and presented. This is probably the prettiest and most quintessentially French hotel ever having been converted from a very old girls school. Only 50 yards from the Marina.

Review 72:Nothing I can think of. Perhaps a TV channel in English would be nice, but it is France.

Review 73:Perfect for the Ferry as it's a two minute drive. Clean, comfy and ideal for an overnight stop.

Review 74:The walls in the bedrooms were so thin you were wakened by the people in the next room at 4.00 a.m.There were no facilities to sit outside. The staff in the restaurant were quite detached and the ambience didn't match the food. Overall the hotel did not come up to the usual standards of Best Western.

Review 75:The evening meal was superb and the daytime receptionist very helpful indeed.

Review 76:Room was a fine example of form over function - lighting impractical, horizontal surfaces covered with items leaving no room for guests' items.

Review 77:Reception was excellent and delivered the bad news about the closed restaurant with charm.Good in parts

Review 78:No food after 9pm - can we book a simple cold supper and reserve in advance for when we arrive from the ferry at 9.30pm please?

Review 79:The location and the standards of comfort and cleanliness. Lovely staff.

Review 80:On arrival in our room, I noticed that there were numerous 'black specks' on the bed linen. On checking further, these turned out to be very small insect creatures all over the bed linen, table top, windowsill, etc. I immediately brought to attention of reception, and we changed rooms instantly!

Review 81:this is a very good, very conveniently located hotel. The staff were always very friendly and helpful. It is a pleasure to stay here.

Review 82:the bathroom was a bit small. the restaurant was a bit expensive.

Review 83:the hotel was clean, the bed was very good. the staff were very nice and helpfull. althought the restaurant was a bit expensive the food was delicious. overall I will go back.

Review 84:There was a perfect reception, and we got fresh fruit and coffee, andalso there is no carpet in our room; everything very clean. The topof the bill is the wellknown Restaurant, where we had a super menu ofthe Chef and his wife. We will return. Large parking for desabledbefore our room.

Review 85:Would have liked more milk on the hospitality tray, and still no spoons provided (which raises the question of whether anyone is seriously interested in customers' comments). Measuring out self-provided bedtime drink with a miniscule plastic 'stirrer' is impossible.

Review 86:Restaurant continues to maintain high standards of quality and service. Didn't have to pay an inclusive price for a breakfast that wasn't required.

Review 87:Ideally placed for a stopover before taking the ferry home to UK from Caen, but didn't expect such a delightful and welcoming hotel. Plenty of parking and excellent facilities in room. The restaurant was the icing on the cake. Sat in the pretty garden for a delicious dinner, starting with excellent oysters/prawns, succulent lamb and ending with a superb cheese table, all served by proficient and friendly staff. Will definitely stay again.

Review 88:The wake up call didn't come. They should have a fail sage system as some business will be for early morning ferries

Review 89:Good secure parking and comfortable

Review 90:This was a very short stay, from late evening on one day to early the next morning, so I'm unable to comment on all the hotel has to offer. The best feature was the reception staff, who were delightful. The room was fine - quiet and comfortable with an excellent bed. I booked the hotel because of its proximity to the ferry port. The location is ideal.

Review 91:An ideal location for us to visit the D Day beaches. The hotel was; quiet, contemporary decor, with an excellent restaurant. One of our party is disabled. The hotel offered a bedroom with ample space for a wheelchair and wet room. This made for a very pleasant stay for them.

Review 92:It should be possible to get a meal for travellers: soup, salad, sandwich served in the bar area. Not all tired travellers want the fine dining experience. This should be provided.

Review 93:Sudden heatwave and my room was air conditioned. Bliss. Everything worked well. Birds in garden singing were especially pleasant.

Review 94:Modest bar facility for a night cap , but good room service in lieu .

Review 95:Pleasant welcome , clean and comfortable hotel , off road parking , an excellent breakfast to start the day . Have stayed before and would stay again .

Review 96:The food at dinner was sublime - a total surprise as wasn't expecting anything much at all. An almost Michelin star quality for very reasonable price ! Room clean and comfortable

Review 97:We were staying with our baby and staff were really friendly and helpful. The receptionist even washed up our baby bottles. The food was also delicious and great value. Thank you very much!

Review 98:This hotel is only 5minutes from the port so in an excellent position for an early morning ferry. The hotel restaurant was fully booked when we arrived but they recommended an excellent one nearby and even phoned to book a table for us. The restaurant was great good food and excellent service. The breakfast was very good too.

Review 99:During our three day stay, we had issues regarding room towels and missing sink plug.

Review 100:This hotel is welcoming and convenient for ferry travellers. The reception staff are a credit to the hotel.

Review 101:No negatives at all

Review 102:The hotel was in a lovely quiet location but only five minute drive from the ferry port. The rooms were fresh and clean and nicely decorated. The staff were very friendly

Review 103:Nothing. It was all good, although the parking could have been a problem. Although to be fair there was a conference on which cleared the car park by the early evening.

Review 104:Restaurant and general ambience for an overnight was ideal.

Review 105:Restaurant closed - therefore had to drive to nearby restaurant. Probably would not have stayed at this hotel if known of this beforehand.

Review 106:Good room and hotel location

Review 107:We arrived in darkness in the middle of a huge thunderstorm and were drenched trying to get to Reception. All telecoms, air condition and fire safety systems had been knocked out by the storm. We cannot therefore give a full view.

Review 108:The multi-skilled manageress who looked after breakfast was very good in explaining the extent of the previous night's problems.

Review 109:Restaurant closed on Sunday evenings Bathroom was a plastic cubicle too small to swing a cat in. For the money it was no better than a travel lodge, It had a very cheap basic appearance

Review 110:I've stayed and reviewed this hotel previously. Its location to the ferry terminal s a huge plus for me, but other than that it is nothing special.

Review 111:over priced breakfast, have to ask for hot food and to replenish lots of breakfast items

Review 112:convient for ferry, good evenIng meal, adequate accomodation.

Review 113:no complaints at all

Review 114:comfortable, clean rooms. pleasant bar and restaurant serving good breakfast, including hot food. secure parking and very handy if arriving late in the evening from the ferry

Review 115:The hot dishes were vaguely warm so as soon as they are put onto a cold plate they rapidly become part of a cold breakfast

Review 116:Some hot dishes for breakfast.

Review 117:....Not really....do like glasses in bathroom as well as wrapped plasticcups......for holding tooth brushes etc....we used the coffee cups...butnot the same...ONLY Comment.

Review 118:Location, value , staff and the type of hotel for a short stay.

Review 119:Meal was good but I did find pieces of crab shell in my starter which was disappointing. Perhaps a little expensive.

Review 120:Location was good for the ferry the following morning. Friendly reception staff. Comfortable room. Good restaurant. Private car park.

Review 121:Small point but we didn,t like the decor. Far too dull and sombre.

Review 122:We stayed overnight at each end of our trip to uk. The receptionists were delightful and helpful although I suspect rather overworked as we had to wait for them to return to the front desk from other duties. The hotel is a 15 minute walk from the town centre so for some a car is a must if they want to eat elsewhere or have time to walk on the beach. Rooms and shower on the small side but well equipped with all you need including tea and coffee.

Review 123:Would have liked to be able to pick up very light meal or sandwich without having to go to the restaurant and have a formal meal.

Review 124:The receptionist was astonishingly competent and friendly and made me feel welcome immediately in English and French.

Review 125:Restaurant always full. never had an opportunity to eat an evening meal here!

Review 126:Location for ferries excellent. An overnight stop here is better vfm than an overnight on the ferry.

Review 127:Minor issue with the sink not draining away very quickly and filling up when tap on and plug out. However, mentioned it to staff and they were very obliging and tried to rectify, did seem to be fixed a day or so after.

Review 128:Convenient base for exploring WW2 sites. Modern clean room with tea making facilities, nice shower, very nice breakfast buffet and very attentive staff replenishing breakfast items even late in the service.
