Reviews for Hotel du Vin Birmingham
Review 1:Only fault was off site parking at an extra cost.
Review 2:Room was very spacious and fresh feeling. Great location. Stayed know a room only basis but restaurant always looked full. Would recommend to friends in future.
Review 3:Unfortunately the "bubbles lounge" let this hotel down as it seemed like an after thought.
Review 4:Rooms were lovely, everything we needed. Would stay at the hotel again just for the room. Nice touch from staff of chocolate strawberries and a welcome note.
Review 5:The quality of the finish in the room was quite bad and there was building work going on opposite our room all night. I could hear droll or a generator all night did not have very rest full sleep.
Review 6:The room was quite big and the roll top bath was lovely.
Review 7:Room was a little dim for paperwork ...could do with desk lamp but small deal
Review 8:Super friendly warm staff who could not do enough to help. Lovely bedroom with everything you could want and a super comfy bed. Lovely bathroom Fab breakfast Perfect location close to the centre I asked for quiet room and it was! What's not to love?
Review 9:The only complaint I have is the reception area. Where the desk is positioned its a small area and if a group of people are checking in/out it gets rather clumbersome.
Review 10:I love the ambience of the champagne bar though it fills up quickly!!
Review 11:1. The blinds in the room didn't reach the bottoms of the window and this is a Suite not a standard room!! 2. The decoration in our 'Suite' was tired. 3. The Suite upgrade was pricey and should include the snacks / mini bar at no extra charge. 4. The choices of channels on the TV was limited. 5. £20 to park your car is extortionate. 6. Service in the Bistro was extremely slow. 7. The food in the Bistro is over priced based on portions and quality. 8. Was given the incorrect order in the Bistro three times. 9. Reception area is extremely tired. 10. Use this hotel for corporate events but no discount on a personal stay was offered. Will think twice about using again and will not stay socially again it is not worth the expense.
Review 12:Nothing for the cost!
Review 13:Unhelpful staff on reception on my arrival. I got lost trying to find my room! Hair in my bath, yuk
Review 14:Lovely bathroom but had to clean the bath as there was hair from previous guest!
Review 15:The room was the last room on the first floor. It was just above the service and back enterance of the hotel on the ground floor - Meerlust. The location of this room is awful. I was woken up at 5.30am on a bank holiday boxing day because of the loudness at the back enterance of the service area. I do not think the room had double glazing. If you staying at the hotel, avoid this room and the room next to it.
Review 16:The staff at the hotel were pleseant and welcoming. The room was adequate for a standard double. The bathroom was nice and spacious with a bath tub and rain shower. The Bristo staff were friendly enough. Although when asked if they could substitute the black pudding for beans with the full english, the simple answer was No! For £17 the english breakfast was basic. Nothing special. My wife had the eggs benedict which she enjoyed. The Bar is excellent!
Review 17:Bed and pillows were a little soft - know this is a personal thing but mattress was not vey good for bad back. We were overchahrged.
Review 18:Very friendly and helpful staff I did not notice overcharging till we had left hotel - staff rang back as promised and dealt with error immediately.
Review 19:The room and hotel is very dark and moody and the room was small I think it's in need of an upgrade as the bathroom had seen better days
Review 20:The breakfast was fantastic
Review 21:sink in room blocked took for ever to empty
Review 22:staff were so helpfull rooms lovely although a little dark for me, but the bed and pillows was lovely really wanted to take home
Review 23:Outstanding service, proper old-school, nothing's-a-problem service, and the little touches in the room were over and above what you usually get these days
Review 24:Regrettably the hotel was quite scruffy and our room was not particularly clean. As far as value for money is concerned there are much better hotels for a lot less money
Review 25:The position, staff and facilities were excellent. Breakfast was goos as well.
Review 26:Rooms are dark for putting on make up. Lots of noise from bin lorries in th street, old building but better double or triple glazing would really help.
Review 27:Staff are excellent, lovely old building in the city. Comfy beds espresso coffee machine and real milk in the fridge! Yay!! You are also in charge of your own radiators, so temp just right.
Review 28:Noise from bins being emptied on the street below early morning woke us. Atrocious room lighting (as with most hotels it seems!) Really squeaky floorboards meant you disturbed the other sleeper if moving about.
Review 29:Staff throughout were lovely. Location is ideal with some great eateries nearby. Bed was really comfortable. Accepted my critiscism of some aspects of the room .
Review 30:Upon check in the receptionist was a little short when we asked her for a receipt for the room deposit.
Review 31:The hotel and room were faultless. Room was very comfortable and warm. Huge bathroom which makes life a lot easier
Review 32:Construction work on building opposite meant all I could see was scaffolding. I didn't book it for the view though, so I just closed blinds.
Review 33:Beautiful roll top baths! Lovely Nespresso machine in room (no instant, hurrah!). Huge bed, very comfy. Helpful staff, very welcoming. Nice location, close to Cathedral.
Review 34:The room was abit tired and lacked cleanliness on the carpets and areas in the bathroom esp as the shower was leaking.
Review 35:Great location, great staff and beautiful hotel. The bed was the most comfortable I have stayed in..
Review 36:The staff were extremely helpful and the beds were incredibly comfy. He location is only a ten minute walk away from Bullring. 2 very minor points, the lighting on the stairs was very dark and we used the spa at 8pm on Sun, there were no staff about and the relaxation room was locked however, these are very minor points.
Review 37:Ghastly black velvet bags hanging from wiring on the very high ceiling in the room and bathroom, which had cobwebs all over both of them. Some mouldy grouting in bathroom. No safe available. Cheap tables in room that had seen better days. Blown bulb in one of the bedside lamps. No free biscuits. Room service dinner did not arrive.
Review 38:Efficient staff. Liked the leather bed structure and bedding. Liked the wallpaper. Liked the large shower head and water power.
Review 39:The breakfast was a bit pricey. The lighting in the rooms was quite dark.
Review 40:The double bed very comfy.Great nights sleep. Also the use of the sauna and steam room in with the price.
Review 41:Very dark in room - we had to open wardrobe door ( lit inside) to get enough light to dress by! Needs bigger brighter lights & perhaps lighter wall paper? Liked the nespresso & little bottle of fresh milk for tea/coffee - nice touch
Review 42:Helpful & well situated
Review 43:Staring into the centre of a building. Long wait to check in, staff seemed unphased by my dissatisfaction. Incredibly expensive for a very average converted boutique hotel
Review 44:Nice rooms, albeit it that the view was towards the inside of the hotel
Review 45:Noisy at night, street noise not hotel, rooms little dark.
Review 46:Location good for centre of town, well equipped gym and good food. Great breakfast and quality of food in pub good.
Review 47:Parking always seems expensive at £20 and limited room service menu
Review 48:Always a lovely stay, very close to the bullring without being too noisy in the thick of it all. Great facilities and very comfortable beds
Review 49:Could do with a full length mirror of which our room didn't have; but I am not complaining because everything else was so wonderful !!
Review 50:We loved everything !!! xxx
Review 51:- My room was cold - air con wouldn't provide heat but switching on radiator created so much noise (banging pipes) it was unbearable - Noise from road - Poor lighting in both room and bathroom - No attention to basics: No shower gel provided; No hook for hand towel near basin; no powerpoint by bed for charging phone - One bottle of water in mini bar was £4! - Inattentive staff in the bar - Limited radio options on the tv
Review 52:Location Bathrobes and slippers Selection of breakfast
Review 53:Valet parking was a little naff. When they bought my back around to the front, they parked it on double yellows and apart from a very understanding traffic Wardon ( there are a few apparently) I would of had a a ticket. I have to sprint to the car to stop him writing a fine. Poor especially when I paid for this service.
Review 54:Most beautiful room with the comfiest bed I have ever slept in. Egyptian cotton, lovely bath soaps.
Review 55:Perfect for city- room beautiful, bed delightful and staff ( all of them) helpful courteous and friendly- really had a fantastic day/ night - only complant - I had to leave!
Review 56:The room was perhaps becoming a little shabby - but clean and tidy all the same. Sadly I had one awful mussel in my moules mariniere that made me feel a little dodgy!
Review 57:Nice place. Calm lighting and decor. Very good staff. Great breakfast.
Review 58:Service in the restaurant very slow - and though we asked for a table reservation when we booked I then had to phone and was only offered very early or very late. They sorted it out on arrival but it was a bit annoying! Room noisy - dripping water from somewhere kept us awake.
Review 59:Good location.
Review 60:No shelves in the bathroom. Toiletries need to be placed on floor. No shelf in the shower. No info book. All inquiries need to be made through front desk.
Review 61:Great bed. Location. Staff.
Review 62:The small dark room that was hugely overpriced along with its tatty appearance.
Review 63:Not a great welcome and not given too much info on the hotel or the city
Review 64:The room we stayed in had a very dangerous lay out and my wife fell down the stairs leading to the bathroom and broke her foot very badly and spent most of the night in hospital. The staff did not seem to be interested in the slightest and did not ask after her welfare. We asked for the room to be refunded but are still waiting for them to get back to us.
Review 65:Slow and uncoordinated breakfast with porridge treated as a cooked breakfast not a cereal! Very expensive. Also not made clear that parking was not on site and cost £11.50
Review 66:Good bathroom
Review 67:My room was a bit pokey and not the usual Hotel De Vin 'lux' I expected. But I booked the cheapest one...
Review 68:Lovely hotel... as they all are. Bar and bistro great.
Review 69:We loved the quality of the beds in our room (Ruinart). As a mature couple we can't cope with a cheap bed but these were superb. We loved the whole experience of being in Birmingham and would definitely stay here again.
Review 70:This is not an hotel I would choose to visit again. I had booked a twin room with an outside view. I was given a room with a double bed with a view out a window high up a wall. The room was still being cleaned when I arrived (after 6pm) and was missing some of the complimentary toiletries ie a bar of soap when I finally did get in. The room was absolutely freezing and when I tried to turn the heating on it got even colder. I went to reception and was told that even though it looked as if the room had a heating control it only had air conditioning and that by trying to turn up the heat I was turning the temperature in the room down. It was an unseasonably cold evening. They did provide a heater I ordered a meal at approx 7.45pm. Very simple steak and chips. After several calls and many excuses from the bistro including "they were very busy" - I went down to the bistro - it was empty. "We sent it to the wrong room."??? "Food will definitely arrive in 20 minutes." I wish! Despite having cancelled the order an uncovered plate of food eventually arrived at 10.30pm. Luckily I had gone out and bought a sandwich as the hotel offering was inedible. Stone cold, the chips were congealed, there was no cutlery, salt and pepper nor the glass of water nor wine I had originally ordered. The bistro manager did however offer to take 50% off the price of the meal!!! Really disappointing Hotel du Vin. A most unpleasant stay.
Review 71:The receptionist was great.
Review 72:That the rooms have names, not numbers. The mini bar and snacks are overpriced.
Review 73:A much nicer room than my last stay, with far more space and the bathroom at a lower level. The bar is cosy and the breakfast excellent. The lift has now been replaced.
Review 74:Old building which makes the floor of the rooms very noisy. We could hear the people above us walking as I am sure people could hear us.
Review 75:Very friendly staff, style and location.
Review 76:Compared to other Hotel Du Vin's in which we have stayed it needs a little TLC, our room was looking a little tired.
Review 77:Good location, friendly staff. Nice bar.
Review 78:We didn't upgrade to breakfast as I feel £16.95 is really expensive and also the drinks etc were also very expensive
Review 79:We stayed here for our first night away from our young children! Fantastic! The showers are to die for!!! We will definitely be back
Review 80:A lovely hotel in a great location. The room was very unique with a lovely roll top bath which filled up very quickly and a lovely powerful shower too. Very luxurious. Would definitely recommend!
Review 81:Casual uninterested service from staff in the restaurant. Overpriced, boring food, eg nicoise salad was just a huge pile of greens, with mushy tinned tuna, and a couple of olives. Bedroom very dark, nowhere to put stuff in the bathroom. Receptionist next morning didn't bother to ask if we had enjoyed our stay.
Review 82:Great location, nice upstairs bar.
Review 83:The room was fine but a bit on the gloomy side could do with a bit of an upgrade decor wise but comfortable and clean
Review 84:The staff were very friendly and helpful, within walking distance of Museum and Art gallery and eating
Review 85:The bar was understaffed for our afternoon tea on the Saturday and the hairdryer needed updating but these were the only faults we could find!
Review 86:A comfortable and luxurious hotel with great facilities.
Review 87:I can't say a bad thing about The Hotel du Vin.
Review 88:Stayed for business and this hotel was exceptional value for money. I was looking for a fairly basic room for the night and expected only this for what I had paid; however this hotel exceeded my expectations. Fantastic design, comfortable, chic and friendly for any occasion.
Review 89:Asked for a quite room and ended up street side and awake really early because of incredibly loud building work going on outside. Mentioned to staff at check out who didn't seem to care less. Won't stay again unless guaranteed a quite room!
Review 90:Next time we'll upgrade to try out a more spacious room
Review 91:Value for money (one third off normal price) Room cleanliness and facilities Bistro du Vin
Review 92:Room was dark and gloomy Window small Bathroom awful Rusty bath panel, grubby sealant around bath and basin plus chip at side of bath - so gross and off putting I didn't fancy even using the bath. There was just one free newspaper available to guests. We usually find a selection in hotels of this standard and relaxing in a comfy lounge with the Sunday papers in a nice hotel is something we look forward to. The hotel needs an internal spruce. Compared to many other Hotel Du Vins we've stayed at, this one had rather a depressing ambience. Hit and miss as to to whether there was anyone covering reception. No help offered with luggage.
Review 93:The helpful manager who we met at reception, also lovely bar and breakfast staff The breakfast - just a shame they had no haddock or in fact a substitute. I usually go for the fish option, but dislike kippers. The bed Efficient lift
Review 94:Nothing really. As we like this hotel so much, we just hope it keeps up the high standards we seem to find each time we stay.
Review 95:We loved especially the location of the hotel, its historic character, the professionalism, kindness and helpfulness of the staff and the excellent food (we had both breakfast and dinner and we were very impressed. The hotel has become a sort of home from home for us, we like it that much!
Review 96:Mattress was a little hard for me.
Review 97:Loved to french doors opening out onto the courtyard. Excellent service and quality of breakfast. Lovely bathroom products.
Review 98:Room was very dark with poor lighting, this is often the case in hotels. I wear contact lenses and need to get very close to the mirror to do make-up etc, this was impossible in the bathroom, although the lighting was good in there.
Review 99:Central location, could walk everywhere. Liked very much being able to have a proper cup of coffee in our room!
Review 100:The room was ace. The spa treatments were amazing and good value for money. The bed was comfy and we could use aircon as it got a it hot due to warm weather. Lots to choose from for breakfast and the eggs benedict was amazing. Cocktails I think are pricey but for an upper class hotel, that is to be expected. Had a St tropez tan but it hasn't seemed to have developed very well, not sure why. Gym looked good but didn't get to use it, would like to next time. Didn't have time to use the heat room. The spa would attract more customers if there was a jacuzzi and a pool along with the original facilities.
Review 101:The spa treatments. Helpful respectful staff. Comfy bed Breakfast choices
Review 102:A little disappointed in the service and staff were not very attentive on arrival. Was given the wrong room key and went into some bodies else's room. Luckily they where not there. Order our dessert to come to the room and it arrived 30min later, at this point we had fallen asleep and awoken by the room service.
Review 103:The food in the restaurant was lovely and waiting staff where very professional.
Review 104:Perfect city centre location - easy walk from New Street Station. Friendly helpful staff allowed early check-in as we were attending a graduation ceremony.
Review 105:The staff wanted to charge double for one breakfast because one of the party ordered porridge and boiled eggs!! After complaining to the restaurant manager they agreed reluctantly to waiver the extra charge but advised us this was normal policy. Rip off !!!
Review 106:Bed too fussy don't like foot boards feels too restrictive
Review 107:Great position lovely building with history. Very good meal in Bistro though wine menu pricey
Review 108:Having asked for no feather bedding and asking again when we checked in, we were still given feather bedding. The staff member apologised profusely, but it still should not have happened. The hot breakfast was attrotious, badly reheated eggs and bacon and a stale hard-as-iron muffin. The TV had 3-4 working channels, which frankly in 2015 is inexcusable. The only accessible plug points were by the door, which meant you had to leave anything to charge on the floor, and the cord from the hairdryer did not reach to a mirror.
Review 109:The location was excellent and the staff were all lovely, friendly and helpful.
Review 110:Breakfast was quite chaotic, staff seemed overwhelmed and poorly trained. Bathroom was in need of re decoration
Review 111:Good location for central Birmingham, lovely conversion of old hospital building, even basic room was good size. Very well equipped gym.
Review 112:Nothing specific apart from the lack of parking. Valet parking available, but at a cost. One small point, I was told to request the car and it would be available within 5 to 10 minutes. I waited 30. Bit annoying, but I put that down to lack of attention on behalf of the desk clerk. Subsequently I was late for my meeting. The knock on affect of people's inattention does have influence and the staff should be aware. Bit of a training issue.
Review 113:Great hotel, good location yet surprisingly quiet, beautiful decor and simply the biggest bed I've ever seen. Can't fault the place.
Review 114:Room Le Pin, a really annoying, disturbing dripping bath tap that would not stop. The French doors are letting in lots of water. The whole room seems tired and needs refurbishing, not what we were expecting. No cream or milk for the coffee. Not sure of the batman s name, black hair and short black beard, spoke far too sharply and abrupt when we asked for a drink, could sense a bad atmosphere behind the bar. Perhaps he was having a bad day
Review 115:Majority of the staff, you could tell they have a passion to be there and enjoy interacting with visitors. Made us feel special, it was our wedding anniversary and we are glad we stayed.
Review 116:The parking was a problem. The communal areas in the hotel were a little tired. The attention to detail with the interior decor needed fine tuning (flaking paint, skuffed skirting boards, no pics on corridor walls). This is what let the hotel down.
Review 117:The restaurant and bar were very nice. The room and the bed was comfortable. The staff throughout were curtious and pleasant. It was the first time we had stayed at a Hotel Du Vin and we were impressed.
Review 118:Large, well appointed room with a comfy bed, nice coffee and tempting mini-bar. Luxurious bathroom with the most amazing plumbing I've ever seen (fantastic shower, and bath fills in moments!) Delicious food in the Bistro (Highly recommend the Chateaubriand). Very efficient and friendly staff both in reception and in restaurant.
Review 119:Traffic disruption trying to locate hotel due to zombies and filming.
Review 120:Staff at Reception were welcoming and helpful. Parking service very efficient. Quick response to DIY requirements
Review 121:Breakfast was ok I've had better at other hotels.
Review 122:Everything was great. Staff helpful, good size room, excellent location, spa area was quiet and great.
Review 123:Birmingham is my home town and I wanted to see for myself the regeneration of the city centre. The beautifully transformed Eye Hospital has an excellent location, is reasonably priced (with the possible of over £16 for breakfast) and the accommodation is clean and well appointed.
Review 124:The room was nice until closer inspection we found it to be dirty in areas and things that had been broken were fixed poorly. There was a wedding on at the hotel which we were not told about on booking, this meant that we were not allowed to use certain areas of the hotel including the bar downstairs. The lifts didn't work due to refurb again we were not told about this on booking. It didn't affect us personally but there were a lot of other guests who were complaining and some with disabilitys who rely on access.
Review 125:The location. The staff were excellent!, and a comfortable bed.
Review 126:Nothing.
Review 127:This hotel was excellent for location, comfort and style. We were also especially impressed with the helpful staff, on reception, when taking breakfast and in the hotel bar.
Review 128:Hard to fault this hotel but if I had to I'd say the pillows weren't great!
Review 129:We stayed here for one night and wished we were staying longer! The staff were so friendly, the hotel felt luxurious, location was good, room was great and the shower was amazing! Overall a very relaxing stay, best we've experienced for a while.
Review 130:Coffee at breakfast not great and had to ask for hot milk twice. In France this would go without question for cafe au lait! Asked for granary toast and got mixture of white and brown. Greek yoghurt would be nice... Bathroom was a bit worn around the edges. Tiles and grouting need deep cleaning or replacing.
Review 131:Friendly staff, comfy bed.
Review 132:The noise from the next door development. This started earlier than 0730 hrs which was v disappointing given I was desperate for sleep having worked late all week and was the reason why I stayed and didn't return to London!
Review 133:Service and friendly staff
Review 134:Staying in this hotel was great pleasure and I felt well looked after. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Although being on my own, I felt that was the right place for me. Will be definitely back.
Review 135:no complimentary biscuits in room. recently stayed in B&B in lake district and there were a choice of locally made shortbread and ginger bread in room.
Review 136:en suite
Review 137:Its a bit worn out. The lift being renovated is a pain being on second floor but someone helpfully took my bag up.
Review 138:Room was interesting with comfortable bed and excellent linen.
