Reviews for Merchant House

Review 1:Feels like being at home roaring fire great service gave me a plate so i could eat my takeaway. Had power cut in room in morning reception straight up and sorted it even got complementary brekkie superb customer service. I stay here a lot love it.

Review 2:This is the second time I have stayed here, the bathrooms in the attic rooms are poorly thought out, there is a bath with a shower hose/head. There is insufficient room/head height to use the shower due to the ceiling height, hence you need to use the rather small bath. The bathroom fittings are very nice however impractical, they are very ornate but because of this there is no room to place your toiletries as the perimeter of the bath/sink etc are uneven. Apart from this all is good.

Review 3:Very clean, staff were very helpful, good location.

Review 4:not so much didn't like but felt distance as in ''walking'' to town centre quite a long way and a good distance and a big hill to walk) a minus if you have no car) and bus services non exsistent really and taxis very very exspensive in Truro)

Review 5:staff were lovely nice and clean lovely warm room on arrival) appreciated)

Review 6:Room very small, bathroom needed updating. They are updating a lot of the hotel currently but can only mark as seen

Review 7:Good location, close to the centre. most hings just average. Nothing really stood out.

Review 8:The only thing I would change would be to add vegetarian sausages to the breakfast menu.

Review 9:Staff were really friendly and we were given a lovely welcome. The location was perfect and I liked the fact that you could bring your dog if you wanted to.

Review 10:Some rooms have roman blinds at window. Its a small issue but prefer curtains to let air circulate as room was very warm.

Review 11:Clean and welcoming hotel. Lovely breakfast.

Review 12:Unfortunately the people in the room next to us were very noisy and used extremely offensive language. They played loud music, swore effusively at a high volume and used sexually explicit language that we could hear through our wall.

Review 13:The hotel was welcoming, clean and the staff were friendly. We especially liked the afternoon tea with home made cake and the roaring log fire!

Review 14:water came through the ceiling due to overflowing bath in room above, moved to another room where the tv did not work, moved back to our original room the next day that had not been cleaned properly

Review 15:nothing really

Review 16:Size of bed it was just slightly to small, in length.

Review 17:The personal help when I was in trouble, when I needed help they were there, which allowed me to get a meal. Thank you.

Review 18:I think the bedroom furniture was abysmal. Seen better in a junk shop! Also coffee poor! Needs a proper machine.

Review 19:The sitting room/breakfast room facilities. also the staff.

Review 20:charm free reception no view as window too high quite noisy from street very basic provision (e.g. charge for toothbrush) small double bed

Review 21:clean and comfortable functional

Review 22:Add the price of breakfast and price not so competitive. Website pictures misleading but poorest feature was maintenance with both bedside lights broken and vanity light not working etc

Review 23:the bed was too hard for us, the duvet could do with being renewed as lumpy were it has separated. the fire alarm has a light on it that flashes all night.

Review 24:the position was very good

Review 25:The only thing we didn't like was the smoke alarm in the bedroom just flashed all night.

Review 26:To welcome guests they offered free coffee & cake which was delicious. We stay in Truro around 5 times a year in another hotel but know we will stay in The Merchant House.

Review 27:Unfortunately bathroom was very disappointing as bath only had a hand held shower fitting with no shower screen - washing your hair over the side of the bath is not a pleasant experience! The bathroom has had a 'make over' but one of the most important functions has been missed.

Review 28:The room was spacious and comfortable. Tea and cake in the afternoon was very welcome.

Review 29:I would have preferred a shower rather than the full size bath (which had a shower attachment) but because there was no shower curtain could only be used for hair washing. Great car parking.

Review 30:Only good experience.

Review 31:We were given great assistance including storage of bicycles and what to do if feeling unwell. our room was very comfy. Great character, converted from a wealthy house.

Review 32:1toilet broke 2sealing in shower flaking had to maintenance man in 3mornings for repairs 3in 15nights bed changed twice bedroom doors firedoors not closing hadto slam door so did other people why didn't any one inform us about kitchen closed for refurb

Review 33:There was a bed to sleep in thas all

Review 34:Felt like a boarding house Our room had a small window looking on to the fire escape Thin walls Lumpy uncomfortable bed and duvet Took the full cost of the room as soon as booked..a few months ahead!

Review 35:The short walk into town..about 10 mins

Review 36:No bad experience at all but it was tough being on the top floor with no lift.

Review 37:The staff were extremely friendly and pleasant to deal with at all times. Breakfast was delicious and the parking was fab. My room was clean with good bedding and a clean bathroom.

Review 38:Lovely facility and hospitality. Pleasant and helpful staff. Quiet yet central location. And they gave us a room with direct outdoor access which was handy with the dog. Couldn't have been better.

Review 39:Very pet friendly - dog welcome pack provided and receptionist explained where local dog walk was when we arrived. Very helpful staff. Close to town centre and facilities.

Review 40:The room was quite small and breakfast was not included in the tariff.

Review 41:The room was quiet and comfortable, it was just a short walk down hill to a great pub and then not much further on to the city. It is one of the only hotels in Truro that took dogs and was available.

Review 42:Bedside lights could be brighter. Would have liked a choice of teas.

Review 43:Lovely, friendly staff - very welcoming. Bar on premises. Close to town. Extremely clean.

Review 44:Breakfast was extra if you book on line and not direct through the Hotels website.

Review 45:Room was basic but lovely and the complimentary tea and cake in the afternoon was lovely.

Review 46:Thought the shower facility was poor. A shower screen with a holder on the wall for the hose would be an improvement.

Review 47:Good sized room with a very comfortable bed. Bathroom was tidy and clean.

Review 48:The shower, although warm and strong was a very small cubicle, not ideal for the larger man. That's my only gripe.

Review 49:Lovely friendly staff. Location good. Private person which was respected. Bed very comfy. TV excellent standard.

Review 50:nothing

Review 51:it was very good that we could order a takeaway then be supplied with plates and cutlery also eat in comfort of the lounge. staff were very nice and helpful hotel very clean & comfortable would gladly stay again.we had a very nice week 7/12 /15

Review 52:Poor sound insulation. Our son was disturbed by toilet sounds from the room above throughout the night and we could readily hear people talking in adjacent rooms.

Review 53:Within walking distance of Truro

Review 54:Breakfast not included but if I had booked direct then that would have been included.

Review 55:Lovely room, very private, peaceful, clean and very very comfortable. Wish I booked direct as wanted a bath instead of shower. But cant complain I had two lovely sleeps.

Review 56:When stepping in the shower there was an edge at the button I kept stubbing my toe on

Review 57:The room was amazing and comfy! The blackout curtains where great and the bed was soft

Review 58:Disabled room 50 metres + from breakfast room and up a steepish slope. Not good for whelchair user. Thought charge for continental breakfast excessive.

Review 59:- the corridors seems to be a bit older - you can hear the neighbours TV

Review 60:- car park (enough space) - everything you need in the room - you can open the window in the room - a good distance to Truro (wonderful)

Review 61:I felt it was over priced for the condition of the room. Needs updating and didn't even include breakfast. I object to the inflated prices in September. The price is double the price for the same room in November

Review 62:Very convenient location

Review 63:The bed was extremely comfy. On entering the room you could smell the clean bedding, smelt lovely. Very clean room. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 64:Small attic twin room for £95 . Didn't feel value for money , electric lights failed whilst showering so we had to shower in the dark.

Review 65:Comfortable bed

Review 66:Bit pricy for what it was. A sign inside says that if I had booked directly with them, I would have had breakfast included.... There was a bath (with a handheld shower, with no shower curtain), so bath/shower does mean either or!!

Review 67:Comfortable bed, central to the city

Review 68:It's situated on one of the many hills of Truro.

Review 69:This hotel was one of the nicest I've visited. It was modern, fresh and clean and the staff were accommodating. The bed was out of this world and we couldn't of asked for more.

Review 70:Were in disabled access room and did not like the wet room as it meant there was water all over the floor though do appreciate the room was not catering for a led bodied. Also had to chase up on the towels as none were in the room; on the second day had to ask for more towels as we were left with only one bath towel after the room had been cleaned.

Review 71:Friendly breakfast staff and excellent breakfast.

Review 72:Room was very cramped for two people and unable to stand up in the bath to shower due to sloping roof. Similarly there was a beam below the sloping ceiling over the bed which meant having to constantly be on guard not to knock one's head on it. Lighting also difficult - only bedside table on one side of bed and that light not sufficiently bright to read by.

Review 73:Breakfast was good and staff helpful. Location good as only 10 mins walk to centre.

Review 74:Nothing when it comes to the hotel or place. However, wasn't impressed to find that out breakfast would've been included in the price had we booked directly with the hotel and not through booking.com

Review 75:Friendly staff and extremely comfortable bed. Tea, coffee and homemade cake available free every afternoon - a wonderful treat. Lovely place and great location.

Review 76:I barely slept and spent most of the night and the next morning itching. The pillows were lumpy and some had holes in which meant that you're being poked by the pointy end of numerous feathers not the usual one or two. If protectors were used this wouldn't have been a problem and this would have been more hygienic. The sheets were scratchy - full of bobbles and runs though this may have been intentional. I discovered that the sheet was on top of an old counterpanes which explains the lumpiness of the bed. I've only slept worse on two occasions: at a naval barracks before a christening and on an overnight flight

Review 77:The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and responsive.

Review 78:Disabled access: in fact it was a very small room for disabled people, rear hotel parking level . Many difficulties with front desk staff to connect internet and print airline boarding cards (solution easy found with kind staff of town tourism office)

Review 79:Location

Review 80:We didn't like the cleaners staff making too much noises and too early they start talking loud next to our door. We woke up thinking its bit loud early morning

Review 81:We liked the welcoming reception staff very nice. Parking good. Bed is awsome.

Review 82:No lift! Probably not very disable friendly.

Review 83:Complimentary cake with tea or coffee in main lounge every afternoon. Plenty of parking. Quiet room - had a room at the back of the hotel.

Review 84:The room and bathroom were very small and in an unattractive extension on the back of the original building. Breakfast was not included when booked through booking.com

Review 85:Friendly staff and problem with the bathroom light fixed quickly.

Review 86:we had to pay for breakfast as we'd booked on line. It was included in price if phone booking made. This has never happened to us before. Service at breakfast was very slow.

Review 87:Easy parking and plenty of it. Convenient location. Clean bright room with tea/coffee tray.

Review 88:When booking we were told it was about 10 mins from the centre, which was no problem going down but having breathing problems and not knowing how steep the hill was on getting back to the hotel we would not use the hotel again as we relied a lot on taxis.

Review 89:The hotel staff were friendly

Review 90:Room which had been superficially renovated recently. Small grubby airless room window too high for me to see outside. bathroom generally very low quality, cut my foot on the shower edge...I checked out early,

Review 91:staff agreed with my issue and offered refund location is convenient I wasn't bothered but others might like the hearty well cooked breakfast the pet friendliness which Im not keen on either

Review 92:The kettle needs replacing as steam emitting from the boiled kettle is really dangerous.

Review 93:We requested decaf teabags and soya milk and these were supplied upon checking in.

Review 94:Owner + staff offered support and ideas to find places, Highly recommend Merchant house to everyone!! a pleasurable place to stay..... If we ever need a place to stay this would be our 1st choice.

Review 95:Bed was small and storage was limited.

Review 96:Liked the view from the room. Shower facilities good and tea and coffee available in the room. Plenty of parking and within walking distance of the centre.

Review 97:Extremely small attic room, sloping ceilings, tiny bathroom with nowhere even to hang a towel and the washbasin actually in the main bedroom. Room facing onto main road so very noisy.

Review 98:The location.

Review 99:not really a bad experience but the room could have been hoovered and there was no coffee in the room on the first day of our stay.

Review 100:excellent location, short walk to restaurants, bars.good parking facilities, free WiFi with straightforward and easy registration.

Review 101:Noisy in adjoining rooms, but this did not go on until late. Taps need replacing in bathroom as not working well. Room very small.

Review 102:Clean, comfortable and conveniently located. Fair price, and decor fresh.

Review 103:Narrow flights of stairs might be difficult for some, breakfast in the bar was not good when a restaurant next door which we weren't directed to. Breakfast itself not wonderful. Not sure what they did with the sausages but very limp!

Review 104:Staff very pleasant and free tea, coffee, cake on arrival was a nice and delicious touch.

Review 105:Sitting in the bath to have a shower is not my idea of luxury. Apparently I could have asked for a stand up shower when booking. Not something I should have to consider when booking.

Review 106:Booked 2 rooms 4 months out. Was surprised that they were on different floors and opposite ends of the building. Also the wifi was poor at the back of the property.

Review 107:Breakfast

Review 108:Outdated decor- could do with refreshing the look a bit. The tea and coffee and shower gel etc looked like they have been bought for as cheap as possible price (tjimk Happy Shopper bran, red and white value brand) Expected more for £85 per night, on Thursday.

Review 109:Plenty of parking. Great shower and comfy bed.

Review 110:The curtains didn't function as curtains should. £4 a pint at the bar. I said good morning to 3 separate members of staff when i came down for breakfast, the first chap blanked me and the pair sat at the computer in reception were more interested in staring at a screen than simply saying hello. I waited 30 minutes for a cooked brekkie, which was not included in my £105 a night bill. The tomatos were salty, the sausage wasn't cooked and the bacon was salty. the poached egg was unbelievably vinegary.

Review 111:The walls were so thin that the wifi worked flawlessly. The toilet flushed correctly.

Review 112:All was good.

Review 113:I travel a lot on business, and stay in many hotels all over the country. This is the best hotel that I have stayed in for quite a while.

Review 114:As above.

Review 115:It is good to be able to do our own washing when travelling, but thought £10 was overpriced for a small domestic washing machine. Welcoming coffee and cake was a fabulous addition.

Review 116:Extremely dated décor, very basic rooms, totally overpriced. Was told by the receptionist it was a lesson for me to book things in advance in future, most helpful lol!

Review 117:nice 10 min walk into town

Review 118:Lift would have added to the experience.

Review 119:The staff were really helpful and friendly, the room was clean, fresh and more than adequate. The bed was very comfortable and they served free afternoon tea and cake in the afternoons.

Review 120:Absolutely nothing

Review 121:All the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly The complimentary cake and coffee Location Room was excellent very clean, comfortable and very quiet

Review 122:Small bathroom At the top of a hill, tough walk back from town

Review 123:Room was clean and tidy, bed was comfy, very quiet, staff were really friendly, close to the station and plenty of restaurants, cooked breakfast was really good.

Review 124:The twin room we shared had a bath with no hook on the wall for the shower, and no shower curtain....so it was quite tricky to wash our hair and keep most of the water in the bath! That's my only criticism!

Review 125:Super comfy bed and so convenient for Truro. Brilliant service and breakfast.

Review 126:Fire alarm at 6.30 one morning through fault. Not hotels fault but not exactly relaxing and no apology. Also, shower only lukewarm first thing in the morning. Hot in the evening.

Review 127:Nothing

Review 128:Friendliness of the staff, the breakfast, the cleanliness of the room, the power shower and the Wi-Fi. We would definitely return when visiting Truro.

Review 129:Breakfast for £7.50 is ok but that's about it!!

Review 130:Good location Good parking Good room Pleasant and very helpful staff A very nice touch is the free coffee and home made cake in the afternoon

Review 131:Noise from other residents returning during early hours of the morning. No evening meal available.

Review 132:Parking available. Fire lit in evening and candles on tables in lounge making it very homely. Undergoing refurbishment which should make it even better.

Review 133:I was travelling alone and arrived in the evening after a 10 hour journey. I was disappointed not to be able to obtain a light snack; I was told I could order a takeaway and eat it in the bar, which I did not choose to do. The town is a 10 minute walk away. Once in the room, I saw that the notes said sandwiches were available upon request, however, I had been told no food was available. This was very disappointing.

Review 134:The room was a little basic, but comfortable and clean. The bar area is very pleasant.

Review 135:Small bedroom and poor shower room - nowhere to hang a wet towel. Not sure if promised refurbishment can upgrade sufficiently given parameters of size of room.

Review 136:Bar/reception area, complimentary afternoon tea

Review 137:Staff not very helpful I struggled with bags on leaving. My partner had to leave early and gentleman on reception watched as I tried to get through two doors with difficulty. On arrival lady on reception not very welcoming. Also check in is very late at 4pm.

Review 138:Nothing special to say

Review 139:The room was very cold throughout the late evening, night and morning. We arrived quite late (10pm) and immediately had problems with noisy neighbours (loud music, noisy love-making !!) Complained to reception and it took a while to convince the staff that there was actually someone in that particular room, but she did eventually ring them and they did shut up....

Review 140:Stayed here before. Lovely room, lovely breakfast, friendly staff, clean and comfortable.
