Reviews for Glen Usk Hotel
Review 1:Dirty and smelly room, wall paper hanging off, Windows didn't open, uncomfortable bed, lack of electrical socket next to bed, outdated furnishings, carpet filthy and torn, curtains ripped so you couldn't close them, stains everywhere, one word DISCUSTING, food was small and poor too
Review 2:Price I guess
Review 3:The only downside was that the public areas are looking a little tired but I guess that this is reflected in the price for the room.
Review 4:Mostly a very clean hotel, very good breakfast and great value for money. Location is very good too, overlooking the green in the town.
Review 5:Very dated. Needs a lot of tlc. Bar shut abruptly. What has happened to the good old fashioned residents bar? Sash windows in bedroom rattle in the wind. Breakfast average. Ok as a one nighter.
Review 6:The price.
Review 7:Hotel is a little tired, but clean throughout and this is reflected in the price.
Review 8:Great value for money. Nice views over the square. Lovely traditional breakfast.
Review 9:Wifi only available downstairs, not in the room. Internet is slow, but it is slow for the whole town. Traditional bedding, sheet and blankets with a throw.
Review 10:Lovely staff. Great value for money. Good breakfast.
Review 11:Personally, would prefer duvets on the beds to sheets and blankets.
Review 12:Stayed for an overnight whilst visiting family in the area, so just after a cheap place to sleep. The hotel is very retro, but clean and with friendly staff.
Review 13:Everyone was very accommodating. All the staff are characters. I had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Definitely not a chain and great value for money.
Review 14:Nothing was bad.
Review 15:Friendly staff, great value with a good breakfast. Rooms have everything you need including enough tea and coffee for a quote a few drinks unlike many others.
Review 16:There wasn't anything!
Review 17:Everything, staff very nice and professional room lovely spotlessly clean breakfast good quality and very reasonable would and will stay here again
Review 18:Breakfast was ok but slow to be served. Tv small for size of room. No information about are or meals available in hotel room. Staff front of house weren't over friendly, on telephone when we got there and took call when they were seeing to us. Really noisy floorboards and toilet cistern!
Review 19:Nothing outstanding it was an ok place for one night.
Review 20:The hotel is very dated. bed was uncomfy. it was like staying at faulty towers!! Breakfast table was filthy and had crumbs and spilt egg all over the table cloth! Staff were very unprofessional and manager gave younger waiter a verbal warning infront of the whole dining room - poor kid! Smells of damp and floors are wonky. Resembles a 70's 80's museum really! This was cheap and we got exactly what we paid for - hilarious though!
Review 21:The outside of the building which was a lovely Victorian one. location was nice too and convenient for the royal welsh show ground.
Review 22:The cooked breakfast was poor: synthetic sausage and microwaved bacon. The cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurt were fine.
Review 23:The room was warm and comfortable.
Review 24:The wifi was poor; and little or no internet connection. Also I had poor connection on my mobile phone throughout. The dinner was a little overpriced, there was no transparency regarding charges for food.
Review 25:The hotel was very clean; and the staff very friendly. The overall service was impressive.
Review 26:Excellent value for money, friendly and helpful staff, great location for touring around central Wales. Charmingly old fashioned hotel. Would definitely stay again.
Review 27:the first impression of the hotel was disappointing! the lady on the desk was very scruffy, in need of dental work and had dirty fingernails!!!!!.One lady in the dining room was very rude, making us feel uncomfortable becaused, even though we were told we didn,t need to book for dinner, she inplied that we did. it seems to be that the coach parties take precedence, we as individual guests were second class citizens. there was one man waiter who was very good and apologised on her behalf!
Review 28:the bedroom was very comfortable and roomy, the huge bathtowels were great!
Review 29:Decor is dated - but this did not really bother us - so many updated places are so bland - and expensive.
Review 30:Lovely Victorian building, friendly, efficient staff, breakfast eggs poached to perfection.
Review 31:Poor choice of poor quality expensive beer. No light in corridor- as a result difficult to see to get key in lock. Niggling faults in room but I had no pen to report on the maintenance card
Review 32:The special offer price
Review 33:Had to spend first night in a very unpleasant smelly room, but we were moved to a much nicer room, and received a complimentary meal, which was very good
Review 34:Situated near all amenities
Review 35:The Wifi was slow and no Wifi in the room...I needed to get away from my laptop, and so I didn't mind at all. It did me good!
Review 36:The hotel had a very homely feel, all the staff were friendly and very welcoming. The grandeur of the hotel was faded - but this for me just added to its charm. A wonderful place.
Review 37:Not cleaned well, loads of cobwebs, on the cealing no view except for a roof, a bit noise ,Curtis falling down , it's needs updating , I was by the door everyone used for the lift
Review 38:The room was nice, bathroom was nice, good shower, liked the blankets instead of a duvet , staff nice
Review 39:Room felt old and tired and didn't feel particularly clean, although bedding and towels were. 10:30 check out more like a hostel than a hotel. Lack of power outlets in the room.
Review 40:Located in the centre of town with free parking in front of the hotel. Reasonably priced but needs renovation.
Review 41:Though it had a good old fashioned Victorian feel it needs a bit of face lift with a Lick of paint and add more colour to the bedrooms with some cheerful paintings .
Review 42:Had a very friendly and warm atmosphere ..liked the old Victorian feel Staff were helpful and friendly and breakfast was good and well served .
Review 43:No one working in restaurant on a Saturday night so couldn't have a meal No wifi
Review 44:Staff were friendly and helpful free parking and great location Clean and comfortable room
Review 45:Grotty throughout the hotel. Madly overpriced at £95 per night for double room. In the room: disgusting, mouldy shower curtain, grubby torn wall paper, worn-out furniture and furnishings (I seriousily doubt any charity shop would have taken any of it). Vile, beyond dingy, creased and fly spotted net curtains. Madly overpriced at £95 for double room. I could go on....I have some photos if you are interested
Review 46:large room, comfie bed, good sheets.
Review 47:Comfort, older style, friendly and helpful staff. Would go there again anytime. Location great for Elan Valley in Cambrian Mtns. Also to visit sites of Llewellyn ap Gruffyd death and battles.
Review 48:The décor is very tired and the hotel could do with a refurb.
Review 49:The reception staff were very helpful and even provided a stamp for no charge for a letter that I needed to post.
Review 50:Just having no wifi in the room.
Review 51:Friendly helpful manageress checked us in. Large bright front room (121) Overlooking the park. Extremely polite and helpful breakfast service. Table well laid, with a great choice of breakfast including the very enjoyable obligatory 'Full English'!!
Review 52:Fine by me but note: no hairdryer
Review 53:Room a good size. Thank you to the obviously hard-working cleaning staff because interior decor is a bit old-fashioned and ready in places for a makeover. But who cares? My experience showed the place to be immaculate!
Review 54:the bath water in this place was BROWN 20 years ago, supposed to be a problem with a tank - it's still BROWN. Noise from outside at night, could do with double glazing.
Review 55:The hotel had free wifi but the signal doesn't reach all of the rooms and I had to go downstairs to use the Internet
Review 56:The hotel is well appointed with very spacious, comfortable rooms. The dining rooms and lounges are similarly grand. The owners are lovely people who couldn't do enough for me.
Review 57:Very worn decor, threadbare carpets (duct-taped in some areas!) and sad fixtures and fittings. Debatable overall cleanliness. Hotel bar was very badly stocked.
Review 58:Well proportioned room in once lovely old hotel. Staff were friendly.Sheets and towels were clean.
Review 59:I don't have enough characters to describe how abysmal this place was from the staff who were poorly trained and didn't have any knowledge about the food, prices, beer selection and the location to the curtains that came off the rail that were held on by two elastic bands (they were promptly re-hung with three elastic bands for security this time). There was no shampoo or shower gel, the food selection in the restaurant was minimal and the main course was served within 5 minutes of ordering (obviously not freshly made).
Review 60:The exit door
Review 61:Too warm overnight, stained velour headboard, ancient furniture. Everything is brown! No-one could connect to the wifi while I was there.
Review 62:Easy to find, helpful staff, comfy bed. Room was as clean as possible, given the shabby state of the furnishings. Third floor rooms really need some money spent on them.
Review 63:room very tired, unable to turn down radiator, beds very old/tatty,at £50.00 ok but at going rate of £85.00 I would of demanded a better room. no food any where in town after 3pm no food in hotel until evening. ended up at coop. for food
Review 64:warm rooms, too hot really. breakfast very good, staff cheerful, good value as we had secured a large discount. £50.00 for one night with breakfast for two.
Review 65:The room was fantastic, but overall the Glen Usk is a grand hotel that has seen better days, the whole of the inside could do with a facelift/refurb. Staff were ok, but the service was no more than you would expect.
Review 66:The room was clean, large, well decorated and comfortable
Review 67:Poor toilet facilities, no hairdryer. Bath in poor condition. Entry from the very dingy car park had been forced open at some time and anyone could enter the hotel
Review 68:Position of the hotel in the town
Review 69:Not really a 'bad' experience, just a bit difficult to find parking either out front or in the private rear car park as the hotel seemed to be full. Directions to the hotel should point out that it is in a one-way system and how to get to it.
Review 70:Warm welcome, good breakfast. I'll return next time I have to go to the area. Next time, I might try dinner as well!
Review 71:Not a bad experience, but as other reviewers have said, the hotel is very tired and dated. Some staff were rather surely, but not all. Some people may find the hotel too warm, but it suited me.
Review 72:Warmth, space, plentiful hot water, location central.
Review 73:The breakfast routine was not explained so I was left confused and I had 3 slices of partially burned toast.
Review 74:The price of the room! Had a TV, towels, bath and shower, chair, comfortable bed and breakfast all included!
Review 75:Was okay for the money, did look like we've gone back 50 years or so, but what they had, the service was quite nice :) the floor boards did creak a lot and made you feel like you were on a boat, but other than that it was fine
Review 76:Checked in by lady manager, very friendly staff, although the hotel is a little tired in places it was spotlessly clean and would definitely stay here again great value for money
Review 77:A bit dated decor and not the most modern facilities but excellent value for money and no complaints at all.
Review 78:Location is good, on a pleasant green triangle, ideal for touring the area. The staff were really accommodating, friendly and helpful, made my young son feel special!
Review 79:The cleaner forgot to flush the loo before I arrived, which was a slightly disgusting sight/smell. Apart from that, I can't fault this place.
Review 80:Huge twin bed room with enormous windows and lots of light, when I was expecting a small single room. Great to have a bath as well. Huge and good breakfast, served by very attentive staff. Also loved being able to take my brandy up to bed at night.
Review 81:The room was dirty with a stained carpet and one of the headboards was broken. No bunkbeds as promised when booking. The breakfast was of poor quality and portion size. The information in the room promised a bar menu in the evening but we were told there was no food. I have never paid so much to be offered so little. Terrible
Review 82:The staff were very friendly and I am sure must be embarrassed about charging for what is delivered
Review 83:Very noisy plumbing and bathroom fans. Bed was poor with a lump of wood stuffed under part of the mattress - not good.
Review 84:Staff very friendly and helpful. A good breakfast.good location. Fabulous bath and piping hot water.
Review 85:I didn't mind it but some might comment on the furniture and some facilities being a little 'tired'.
Review 86:A large friendly hotel with helpful staff. A central location. Wonderful slightly faded grandeur not unlike the town. Clean and very good value for money. Would definitely come again.
Review 87:This hotel gives the option of room without breakfast, which suits my needs on business trips. While it's an old spa town hotel, it's full of character and quirky charm and is maintained to a good standard. Overall, good value for money in a convenient location
Review 88:Room was tatty, bathroom showing signs of age, creaky floorboards and cheap ingredients at breakfast ( powdered egg ?)
Review 89:Centre of town, quaint, a real step back in time !
Review 90:This hotel is very very run down and its a shame when compared to what it could be, given its excellent location. It was not very clean - the bathroom being very poor.
Review 91:Location was spot on for what I required. At £35.00 per night inc breakfast, it could not be beat. Plenty of hot water on demand and plenty of tea & coffee in room.
Review 92:That there was in no Wifi in the rooms which was rather frustration. The decor was very outdated, and the hallways smelt a bit 'antique.' Windows could of benefited with a bit of a clean seen as the view was so lovely.
Review 93:The bed were very comfortable, I slept well. The room was clean and the shower was nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 94:Third floor room was well past tired the wall paper was hanging off the wall large cracks in the ceiling and wall the headboard was very greasy and worn out the bed was lopsided ,damp patches in corners and when I ran the bath the water ran dark brown three times I done this until it ran cleanish , there were even glasses of half drunk alcohol from previous guests on the sideboard .When People spend £80.00 for a nights b&b Surely they would expect the facilities to match that of which they are accustomed to at home or possibly a little better not worse. Due to the distance we travelled and the cob sales at the show ground we could not get a booking anywhere else, so the only options we had were to stay in the mess they called a room or go home and travel back in the morning ,after a bad nights sleep I should have done the latter..so if you are planning to book good luck I hope your stay is ok ,if you have already booked when you get there if you are offered a room on floor three ( the loft ) take my advice and ask for another room on a lower floor..
Review 95:The staff were excellent
Review 96:No internet in bedrooms a must when travelling with work, the building is lovely but the hotels needs money spending on it decorative wise
Review 97:Location, there staff were fantastic, the water was hot as needed. Great location and lovely building
Review 98:Deco rather poor , got asked to move at breakfast by other guest because apparently hotel like you to sit at same table even though not allocated one ! Receptionist at checkin not clean
Review 99:Breakfast was good
Review 100:Not necessarily a dislike, but would have preferred a slightly bigger room with better decor. I do not think we had a room that had been refurbished.
Review 101:Friendliness of staff. Were all happy to help. Breakfasts were good and catered for me being vegetarian. We also ate an evening meal which was also good. Loved the veranda on the front of the hotel where there was seating.
Review 102:Wi-Fi needs a complete overhaul, could not connect to the internet at all over the 2 nights we were there apparently this is quite normal. And it's not really a good look when the General Manager greets you from the verandah as she's sucking on a cigarette.
Review 103:Although the hotel was a bit "Fawlty Towers" we did enjoy our stay - it was a good laugh. The bar staff were great and we met some lovely fellow travellers.
Review 104:nothing everything was as it should be.
Review 105:the staff were friendly and helpful the meals were very good and the location was were we wanted to be in the middle of wales
Review 106:A bit worn but for the price I thought it was what to expect.
Review 107:The lookout on top of hotel to warn staff of incoming stagecoaches in the 19th century. Very friendly helpful staff
Review 108:Whilst it was possible to access the hotel's WIFI, it was not possible to get a connection to the Internet
Review 109:Price, friendliness of staff, comfortable and clean.
Review 110:room 202 was very poor in appearance, cobwebs on the ceiling, used soap in the shower ,cracked windows in the bedroom and bathroom toilet would not flush unless you pumped the handle, the ceiling in the bathroom was stained brown, the shower leaked and the wall behind the shower was black with mould , bed very lumpy, creaked and groaned all night long ,wall paper hanging off the walls it was sad to see a once grand hotel gone to rack and ruin obviously profit before hygiene.
Review 111:good and friendly staff
Review 112:Room had cobwebs everywhere carpet tsped down with black tape and bits of carpet and skirting boards missing. The room was filthy and very outdated. Manager was always outside smoking had to seek other accomodation at last minute as it was that bad especially for a family, I wouldn't even let my dog stay there, avoid at all costs!!!!!!
Review 113:Location
Review 114:Rooms need some modest upgrading. Heavy carpet in bathroom. Lack of toiletries.
Review 115:Good value. Central Location. Good size for single room. Good breakfast.
Review 116:Friendly and nice staff.. Eventhough the building is quite old but what do you expect from a hotel that exist from the reign of queen victoria.. Its clean and classic though.. Will definitely come n stay again..!
Review 117:The decor and amenities were a little past their best, but for the price they were perfectly acceptable.
Review 118:The price, location and breakfast were all excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. Would stay there again.
Review 119:Décor needs a bit of attention
Review 120:The location of the hotel was lovely, staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were 1st class. Rooms were very clean.
Review 121:At the prices charged for a single room there is no reason to make any negative comments. Very nice place full of old world charm.
Review 122:Very central. Good value. Cheerful staff. Would book in again next time.
Review 123:Wifi very sporadic, only available near reception
Review 124:Given a warm friendly welcome. Good location for a night stop. Our room was large, comfortable beds, very well stocked teas and coffee. For just £40 for the two of us, great value for money.
Review 125:no dislikes
Review 126:convenient central hotel, nice fresh cooked meals beds clean and the room was large, yes it needs decorating but did not interfere with my 2 night stay, would stay there again
Review 127:Pink shag pile carpet in room and bathroom, bathroom carpet had tooth paste on it. no toiletries or hair drier. Bed smelled stale.
Review 128:Location Staff helpfull.
Review 129:Parking not easy either on road or behind hotel wifi only on ground floor has not seen much renovation since World War two Bed room very cold
Review 130:In centre of town Breakfast good Room large good bathroom Great value
Review 131:Its a bit tired looking and could do with some investment but certainly would not put me off going back.
Review 132:Food! Wine! Location! Friendly staff! Comfy bed and a clean room. Sunny front where you can sit with a coffee in the morning or a wine in the evening.
Review 133:Just a bit dated, the hotel could do with an update of decor, bedrooms etc.
Review 134:Quiet central location. Looked after really well, by the staff. All staff friendly and helpful
Review 135:We apologise for being negative, but besides the housemaids and a few younger members of staff, we felt that the Manager was cold. There were no warmth in the welcome or departure greetings; and when we asked her any questions about places to see or visit, she would just shrug her shoulders, and wasn't really helpful. We were never asked if the breakfast was ok, or if there any "special requirements", except on the last day. Neverthess, as soon as we had finished eating, the plates would be taken away almost immediately, when we could have eaten more. In the evenings when we would have liked to have sat in the bar with the music on, we were told that the CD player was not working. After the first night, I filled in a form to say that the toilet was making noises whenever we flushed it. I gave the form to the Manager, and she took it. But nothing was ever done. So we could never flush the toilet at night. We think the noise was caused by an airlock. We also feel that the hotel could be a happier place, and the decor needs to be updated. Kind Regards
Review 136:We liked the room and the comforts within it. There was never any problem in getting clean towels etc or coffee, milk or tea. We also liked the Hotel because it was in a central part of Wales, which made travelling easy.
Review 137:Torn and peeling wallpaper Frayed and stained carpet in room Cracked tiles in bathroom Heating permanently on in August Cobwebs in corridors Payment demanded on arrival Parking was on street and limited to 1 hr No Wi-Fi anywhere in hotel
Review 138:Decent breakfast was the only saving grace. It was a good job we were only staying for one night as we wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer. If we hadn't been tired when we arrived, we might have just left!
Review 139:The bed was probably one of the worst I've ever tried to sleep in, in a hotel. The carpet was obviously quite old and there were a few long black hairs on the bedding. Neither of us have long black hair.
Review 140:The room size was great, we had plenty of room and also a good sized bathroom. The location was good and the few staff I did encounter were very nice and helpful.
Review 141:My room was next to the chimney from the kitchens so it was quite noisy. They did offer to change my room for me though.
Review 142:Lovely cheerful staff who were interested in making sure we had a good time. Excellent value for money.A real old fashioned sort of place with a cosy, welcoming feel to it.
