Reviews for Glenwood Hotel
Review 1:Hotel?? More like a Hostel, they accommodate displaced people! Got no sleep because of the noise. Looks like an old peoples home and room was very old fashioned.
Review 2:Friendly welcome.
Review 3:To be honest the breakfast this year were pretty pants. I have had better in previous years. Perhaps a veggie alternative for us Hippies x
Review 4:This would now be the third time in staying at the GlenWood. A group of us visit Margate yearly for a Soul Alldayer, we only use the room to shower, change and sleep. Fantastic value for money, pretty close to all amenities, clean with very friendly staff. Staying at the GlenWood has now become part of our yearly experience. Nice one GlenWood!
Review 5:Wallpaper and sockets hanging off the wall, freezing cold, tv only worked intermittently, curtains too small for Windows, shower water was so slow draining, and the waitress was so miserable! Went to the bar for a drink, but there was NO wine?!?
Review 6:The man that greeted us was friendly, the cooked breakfast was good, good range or cereal/yogurt
Review 7:This should not be classed as a hotel. It is a half way house. Homeless people are housed in this premise by the local council. The reception staff are rude and unhelpful. There is no cleaning of room or bathroom undertaken. A dead wasp remained on the chest of drawers for 3 days !! Parking near the hotel is near on impossible after 5pm. Can not comment on food at breakfast as I did not attend. Hotel smells of smoke and is in much need of some tlc. Would only recommend this hotel to workies or back packers.
Review 8:the room was cold and had to bring my own extra duvet to keep warm and some of the light fixtures were broken and some electrical sockets didnt work
Review 9:the breakfast was good service was good the staff were helpful on local knowledge etc
Review 10:The hotel has potential, but .............. much could be done toimprove the rooms without the management spending much money.
Review 11:Very attentive staff. Great breakfast.
Review 12:The room was slightly shabby and the bathroom wasn't properly clean. The booking was for a triple room with a double and a single bed but when we arrived this was a room with three single beds
Review 13:The staff are fabulous, the bedroom was generous and the bed was excellently comfy. Breakfast was a feast and delivered in super quick time. Impossible not to warm to the Glenwood, if I return to Margate I will stay here again.
Review 14:There was nothing I strongly disliked. It was average at best & served its purpose for the trip at a reasonable price.
Review 15:Good location, easy to find.
Review 16:First room had terrible bed, hardly slept. When first reaching room, window was open and radiator off. Bed also felt damp. Shower looked very uninviting and scruffy. Décor poor and scruffy. White towels dingy. We asked to change room and given a choice of 3. Told that bags would be moved for us but they were not. Told that additional padding would be added to bed. It was not. However, bed marginally better than first one. Scart lead to TV did not work.
Review 17:Convenient location. Good breakfast. Good towels in second room.
Review 18:There wasn't anything I didn't like - I would love the hotel to have some more visitors as they have plenty of rooms and space and it would be lovely to bring it alive again to relive the good times
Review 19:I liked the staff - especially Bridget. They were all helpful and polite. The hotel was great value for money, including the breakfast and obviously had a lot of history in Margate, The room was very comfortable and loved the hand folded towels :-)
Review 20:Surrounding area was a little run down and the type of people around the hotel but the hotel itself was really good.
Review 21:Staff were excellent and extremely helpful.
Review 22:I had to ask to one of the staff to provide me with bleach and utilities to clean the bathroom as it was dirty and had hair from God knows who. I didn't appreciate the fact that o us to clean it myself and also the room didn't have access to wifi even thou they gave me a code to access it the connection was so weak it was impossible to connect. Also I suggest u don't drink the tea/coffee milk they brin in the room as either it was gone off or it was there for too long but when I tried the flavour was horrible.
Review 23:Location was excellent less than 5 mins walk to the beach and there was plenty of places to eat take away and also to do shopping . The staff that were serving the breakfast at the hotel were very nice especially the old lady she was very friendly and Kind
Review 24:Bed was awful, woken up at 2am with loud foreign voices and continued for over an hour until 3.20am... resulted in me having a headache and being very tired the next day. I'd not stay again and i'll be more carful in booking my hotels in future.
Review 25:nothing
Review 26:The cold!!! Walked in and windows open closed them and was fine during the evening. Had to get up early for work and room and bathroom freezing. Parking was on the street and not a lot available
Review 27:Thought it was going to be shared bathroom but was ensuite with bath and shower. Room very clean and very spacious.
Review 28:Lack of facilities as advertised Intimidating atmosphere of people smoking at the entrance on arrival Ripped carpet in room 1980's portable TV in room (did not use) Metal framed sprung bed making noise every time I turned over in bed Having to unbolt the entrance door when leaving due to night porter being asleep Hotel Parking (advertised) is actually on the street
Review 29:Paying at check-in (required) allowed me to leave the hotel at 5am after a poor nights sleep
Review 30:the guy who tried to get into my room at 2.40am , he had been given a key as the staff didn't know my room was occupied and was shocked to find me in there. good thing id put the extra lock on my door.
Review 31:excellent staff, especially the wonderful waitress at breakfast and the very cute guy working the sunday night shift.
Review 32:Ripped bed linning food.left in bed side draws, rooms were being rent by people waiting for rehousing was like living in a student house on threshers week, no sleep due to noise
Review 33:Breakfast was very good stuff were very nice
Review 34:Double bed was quite uncomfortable. Someone somewhere was playing very loud "boom, boom" music which shook the room, fortunately it stopped at about 10pm but with young children trying to sleep it was uncomfortable
Review 35:The room was exceptionally clean. Liked the layout of the room, the bunk bed was partitioned off from the double bed so we had a bit of privacy.
Review 36:It was not in Margate but in a suburb with not alot to do or see in the evening. Found a good pub but a good 20 minute walk. Not what we were expecting as had looked for places to eat in Margate.
Review 37:Staff were friendly and ok for one night
Review 38:We were distressed by the quality provided compared to the price. The rooms were noisy from neighbouring rooms. The bathroom was not pleasant and decor dated. Shared hotel with families living there (assuming waiting to be housed) Just not what we expected!!!
Review 39:When a receptionist continually refers to you as "young man" when you are clearly 10 to 15 years older than himself he is either being sarcastic or patronising or both.
Review 40:Very good value for money. Staff friendly and a good breakfast.
Review 41:It's a little run down but not bad at all.
Review 42:This place isn't the Ritz but doesn't claim to be either. Very good value for what you get and really nice staff. A good place to stay if you want to see 'trendy Margate' but don't want to spend a fortune on the hipster hotels.
Review 43:Very tired décor in room. Wallpaper coming off. Smallest shower and loo ever seen in a cupboard-type room. Positioned in very run-down part of Cliftonville, with groups of people hanging around outside.
Review 44:Fair price
Review 45:Just a little too far away from the center of town and the train station ...
Review 46:The kindness of the welcome, the prettyness of the house, the quietness of the street ...
Review 47:Tired looking 60's decor, the area is a tad grim. A few undesirables lurking around. Shame really because the photos of it in its heyday just show how much its gone diwnhill.
Review 48:It had a bed.
Review 49:Only issue was TV reception in rooms very poor. This was no problem for one night stay but for longer would be a problem.
Review 50:Pleasant and helpful staff. Comfortable rooms.
Review 51:Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. Easy to walk into central / old Margate or the harbour and seafront - for reasonably able-bodied person. Very good value for a mid-week, out-of-season booking.
Review 52:Although the hotel looked good the surrounding areas were run down. There was nowhere suitable to eat locally in the evening, We walked into Margate to find somewhere.
Review 53:The lady serving breakfast was a real character.
Review 54:We needed to stay in Margate for a family funeral. The Glenwood was conveniently located. The staff were friendly but the hotel is in need of TLC and all a little dated but all in all, value for money.
Review 55:Bathroom door had no handle on inside! Although furnishings & bedding were properly cleaned, mould on pipes in bathroom & hair in shower, light switch grimy and TV remote actually sticky to the touch. Only soap provided in bathroom so need to bring your own shampoo etc. No proper coffee for breakfast, only instant.
Review 56:Comfortable bed & bedding. Quiet. Close to coast.
Review 57:Loud turkish, techno music which actually shook our floor early on Saturday evening and breakfast was inedible.
Review 58:The room was large and in a decent location.
Review 59:The overall apperance inside and out was grubby very outdated with worn carpets, flaking paint, sewerage pipe running inside bedroom, T.V. did not work, no hairdryer, poor, worn out towels, all needed a make-over.
Review 60:unfortunately the area set around the hotel has deteriated and as soon as we pulled up our vehicle to park outside the hotel our car was being checked out by the local thieves. it was not safe with scallies lurking around the streets ! apart from that which is not the hotels fault but the local council and policing everything else about our stay was worthy of us staying with them again. if we go to Margate again that is :)
Review 61:the nostalgia of an old seaside resort was lovely.
Review 62:Very rough area busy and noisy curtains didn't fit room do light and bright in room at 5 am! Very undesirable location rundown and rough neighbourhood
Review 63:Nice friendly staff great breakfast
Review 64:A full english breakfast needs to consist of more than one egg, one sausage, one slice of bacon, tomatoes or beans & served quicker /hotter. The staff dealing wwith the breakfast need some people skills.
Review 65:The hotel was clean & so were the rooms but the area where the hotel was situated was run down with dog mess on the pavements. The "full English breakfast" was very small & served on a small plates & took a long time to get brought to you. There were tinned fruit options, cereals & pan chocolat in wrappers but were out of date on our first day. The 2nd day there were "fresh" strawberries but some were turning soggy.
Review 66:I had the problem with the online booking. It was very difficult to find a double room for the bank holiday. Had to pay an extra price for family room. Please update this booking as it was a double room I needed.
Review 67:I loved the fact that people were friendly and showed hospitality. I learned that Christian families 'share their last piece of bread'.
Review 68:The location wasn't brilliant but overall very good value for the money b
Review 69:Staff were kind and efficient and the hotel was clean. I slept all night without being woken which is good for me.
Review 70:Breakfast could be better quality. Wedding down stairs made much to much noise into early hours, so not getting much sleep, staff could of apologised.
Review 71:Easy going
Review 72:in need of makeover very dated room very little space . Didn't feel very clean bed had seen better days. Tea/coffee facilties very basic with 1 unwrapped teabag .didn't have breakfast as finished at 9.30 which is far to early for Sunday morning
Review 73:Nothing
Review 74:Margate is a bit run down generally but this hotel is up in the even more run down area. Very old fashioned. Wifi is difficult to use.
Review 75:Friendly staff, good value for the money you pay
Review 76:There was a very old 15 inch television in the room. Sellotape holding the batteries in the remote control. It was very hot in the room and when I asked for a fan they gave me one with no cover. This could have been dangerous if children were with us. There were not a lot of plug sockets in the room. The tap in the room was loose, I was scared it would come off. The shower was very small.
Review 77:The hotel was not far from the beach and there is free parking outside.
Review 78:The staff were great - so friendly and eager to help your stay be more perfect for you. Supply as much as they can to assist your stay be good if not better than own expectations.
Review 79:Not accessible for those unsteady on their feet, noisy, funny smell, not everything works in the rooms.
Review 80:Staff we're friendly, that's about all.
Review 81:It seemed like a hostel there was a lot of young people staying in the hotel who was homeless and council put them in their so it felt like a hostel than a hotel
Review 82:It was a friendly hotel and close to the town
Review 83:bathroom a little shabby. No loo roll holder. Glass over basin shelf missing.- supports there but glass shelf not replaced
Review 84:Staff very friendly. Location ideal for Loop bus service to Broadstairs.
Review 85:Bed was awful. Felt every spring, it had seen better days. Sleepless night. Place clean and airy but alittle tired.
Review 86:Great contact with staff on phone with good supportive and helpful advice.
Review 87:Old overused mattress on bed Communal areas leading up to room.. Decor, cleanliness and unpleasant smell Local area.. Noisy, unsavoury characters
Review 88:Personality of waitress Size of room Taste of hot food at breakfast
Review 89:Very noisy people screaming and shouting all night the guy in the room ( staff )next to me had some serious issues and management knew it
Review 90:It is in a good position a d very cheap
Review 91:A very basic hotel but everything we needed, spoilt by little basic things that could easily be fixed e.g. we had to plug the kettle in on the floor because the lead did not fit the socket, one of the bedroom windows did not stay open and it was very hot in there: Also the bedside lamp did not work. In the other room we booked the towel rail was off the wall and lampshade very dented, but these were only little things that could be improved.
Review 92:The breakfast was amazing. So much variety and so much to choose from, never seen a breakfast like it. All the staff were very friendly and the place was very clean and tidy. Would stay there again.
Review 93:The breakfast area and room were in a poor state and not very clean, location of bed and comfort totally unacceptable, sash windows very dangerous for children, toilet holder broken, very small tv, overall a very bad experience
Review 94:The location was very good
Review 95:No WiFi in bedroom. Bedroom too hot, no air conditioning. Bathroom too small and needs decorating, shower in very poor condition. Had a damp smell. The whole hotel looks tired and very dated.
Review 96:Very helpful staff
Review 97:A little labyrinth to find the room, a bit away from the centre and the breakfast was not more than you can expect.
Review 98:Nice place, nice room and a nice location when the weather is good (unfortunately we did not get the chance to test the beach).
Review 99:Everything was good,we really enjoyed our time there.owners were very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble, cakes and tea when you arrive, perfect
Review 100:The facilities listed don't exist, there is no restaurant, coffee, tea and sandwiches were not available all day and the bar was a small kiosk affair in the corner of reception and you had to ask for somebody to get you a drink
Review 101:The staff were very friendly and helpful
Review 102:Not a problem of the hotel itself, but that end of Margate (Cliftonville) doesn't seem to be benefiting from the regeneration yet.
Review 103:Being a Margate holiday maker from the seventies this hotel is the best example so far, of what I expect my stay in Margate to be.
Review 104:Style hasn't moved on from 1970's (?) so decor tired. Squeaky bed.
Review 105:Very clean and friendly staff. Room very simple and underfurnished but comfortable and convenient enough for one night stay. Good breakfast. Great value.
Review 106:Staff friendly but had to work out who they were as no uniform or name badge. My room was on a noisy corridor and I had to have the window open so the noise until nearly midnight of children and parents in other rooms not good.
Review 107:Price and was in Margate. Reasonable for one night only..
Review 108:Before this night I had stayed at the Sands Hotel. So this was a comedown. It was outdated and smelt musty throughout. Electrician was working in room when we arrived. A cat came walking in from outside which plonked itself on the sofa.
Review 109:It was only for one night thank goodness.
Review 110:There seemed to be quite a few youngsters who hung around the lounge area making it feel uncomfortable to be there.
Review 111:The room was adequate. The main part of hotel was very dated and not very inviting.
Review 112:The woman who served breakfast was quite rude and blunt but couldn't fault the other staff also sauces where from aldi and disgusting x
Review 113:We liked that the staff where friendly and there was free parking x
Review 114:Can't fault this hotel loved everything about it. Especially the staff everyone went out of there to make us feel welcome. We will most definitely stay here again. Thank you to you all.
Review 115:Rambling old hotel from Margate's heyday, not in a good state of repair these days. Dated decor, threadbare carpets, tatty fixtures and fittings and a musty smell throughout. My room was at the back by the bins and I was woken early as a result. The WiFi wasn't working. Although the location is walking distance from the Old Town, it is in a very run-down part of Margate with many closed businesses, dilapidated houses, street drinkers, etc.
Review 116:The property could be said to have some character. The price was very cheap. The breakfast was adequate and served quickly. The lady serving breakfast seemed efficient and friendly.
Review 117:Area was very noisy and intimidating Hotel staff were old and miserable Hotel room was very dated
Review 118:Not much - it was just convenience for a party in the town
Review 119:TV didn't work (or we couldn't get it to work!). No semi skimmed milk pots in the room. Breakfast - weren't given a complete lists of options of what was available - we would have had mushrooms but it wasn't on the menu. Other people later were served mushrooms. Croissants and fruits didn't look attractive and tasty. Breakfast could have been laid out in a more attractive. appealing way. The one lady serving was friendly but at the peak time of people arriving for breakfast she was rushed off her feet and slow.
Review 120:Friendly and clean and well located
Review 121:First room dirty laundry outside door couldn't get in because of a mattress outside our room poor bathroom second room tv not working and need to make steps clearly marked as my mum walked into it bashed her head and has bruising on her shoulder also not sure if it should be used for tourist if dss there I know they need to have income but I actually felt a bit uncomfortable at one point
Review 122:Second room was nice bed was good breakfast was great
Review 123:Wifi did not work in the room the hotel details for wifi could not be found so could not connect and the bed made a noise every time you moved so kept awake
Review 124:Quiet, not far from beech
Review 125:The decorators doing the rooms in future need to learn how to paint in a straight line as it drifted on the wallpaper and the decor could to with a bit of improvement otherwise clean room.
Review 126:The hotel was clean, nice room, the mattress on the bed was absolutely comfortable better than mine at home, staff were polite and breakfast was average.
Review 127:Very friendly receptionist and lovely lady that served breakfast in the morning. Lovely old building, they are definitely trying but clearly not much investment put in. You can't moan at £65 for a double room in peak season in Margate. If you do, then go to another hotel and pay double!
Review 128:Overall they need to pay more attention to cleaning bathrooms
Review 129:Value for money is outstanding, come on now where do you get band b for £35 unless it's the gutter. You pay for what you get. Don't expect 5 star, but it's stupidly cheap and above ok.
Review 130:Lovely stay at the Glenwood. Staff were all friendly and were very inviting. Lovely lady who served the breakfast. Definately stay again. Lovely and clean too.
Review 131:Wallpaper hanging down walls, dirty bed, rubbish left in room, noisy live in benefits claimants, breakfast smelt like rotting detritus. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
Review 132:Most of the road was seemed to house the homeless as did the glenwood
Review 133:Friendly staff but needs refurbishment and updating food was good at breakfast it suited us as we were just down for a birthday bender and had a good time overall
Review 134:Very shoddy decor in room, tv not working properly/flickered making terrible noise. Plumbing groaned/loud pump when flushing. Curtains did not pull, could not sleep past sunrise. Shoddy electrics, exposed wires everywhere. Clarty dining room, moaning waitress, fry up cooked in cheap fat.
Review 135:Flowers at the entrance.
Review 136:This retro hotel was excellent value for money and was a nice 15 min walk into the centre of town with excellent views of the town and sea along the way. The owner and one of the staff - David who looked after us were lovely to talk to and made the stay all the more enjoyable. While the facilities were not new they we're full of character and added to our experience in Margate. Definately reccomend if you're looking for a budget weekend away from London!!
Review 137:The light bulb over the desk/TV table was not quiet strong enough for me, but then again it made me find other things to do.
Review 138:Glenwood in a quiet road, near a small shopping centre is ideal for the odd weekend traveller. With pleasant staff a visit here brings tired visitors a wonderful break.
