Reviews for The Alverton

Review 1:Very little comfortable seating in bar. No tables other than coffee tables in bar . Furniture in room 3 was very old and every thing had cup stains on the old brown wood. Looked very tatty and unappealing. 2 bathrooms was over the top although they were beautiful, I would rather have had 1 bathroom and furniture that didn't look like it came out of a skip. I booked a more expensive garden view room, but had a view of flat roof with several old drains, which covered in green, dead leaves and mould. Very unpleasant. I did express my disappointment to reception on arrival and told them it was not a garden room and the description was misleading in the description on line. They were adamant this was room was a superior garden room.

Review 2:Fab bar staff

Review 3:My room was a bit 'tired' and needed a good clean and redecoration. Mould on the window frames and damp patches in the ceilings and walls where it looked like the roof had leaked.

Review 4:Conveniently located and the staff were very friendly. The breakfast was delicious!

Review 5:bedroom was tired....noisy ,could hear next door use the loo....room layout poor...bed next to door ,so if door open you could see individuals in bed....stay again = no

Review 6:the building looked beautiful Receptionist excellent but waiting staff very young and lacked experience

Review 7:cobwebs in the room, bedside lamp not working, a cork on floor under desk but I know if we had told reception about these issues they would have been sorted out immediately, the point is they didn't detract from the stay!

Review 8:comfortable bed , ambiance, friendliness of staff, location. general layout of the rooms, historical fact

Review 9:Two flights of stairs to room with out suitcases. Though to be fair we were offered the services of a porter

Review 10:Fantastic period property Great restaurant

Review 11:No bad experience just wish the hotel had a swimming pool/spa. Tea and coffee facilities in the room but would have been nice to have some biscuits to go with it. Because we were part of a group as we attended a birthday function we got breakfast free, which was very nicely presented but I wouldn't have been happy paying £16.00 each, no breakfast is worth that much no matter how lovely it looks!

Review 12:Beautiful old building. Our room was a nice size with a big bed and a large bathroom, overlooking the gardens. Lovely furnishings and very fresh.

Review 13:The hotel is a very attractive old building and quite quirky. The bed was very comfortable and the room was a reasonable size. The breakfast was very good indeed, great selection and freshly cooked.

Review 14:Furniture in the bar area was tired, additional cost for early check in.

Review 15:Good bathrooms, very friendly staff nothing too much trouble . Bedrooms were nice and spacious, hotel building had interesting character.

Review 16:Minor/picky point that the seal around the shower seal needed replacing/cleaning... Otherwise would have given 10/10...

Review 17:Very good hotel, good location, impressive in many ways...

Review 18:Not enough parking, the opera was on when I arrived and I could not park. It was raining with a mile drive to the hotel. Not a great start.

Review 19:Restaurant and staff proved an asset.

Review 20:Staff were pleasant, helpful and thoughtful about where my room was located (to avoid wedding party noise) and about me as a solo traveller. They called me into the dining room just before my food was ready so that I wasn't sat alone for a long period. All very impressive. A pleasant experience.

Review 21:no face cloth in bathroom noisy from road and wedding parties heating required lack of vegetarian food choice

Review 22:location helpful and friendly staff papers available to read

Review 23:MOVED ALL MY MOTHERS PERSONAL EFFECTS TO ANOTHER ROOM WITHOUT ANY PERMISSION WHILE WE WERE OUT ALL DAY!!!! OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOUR!! IMMORAL AND QUESTIONABLE ETHICS! MORE INTERESTED IN CORPORATE CLIENTS,WEDDING CLIENTS THAN REGULAR CUSTOMERS!

Review 24:LOCATION

Review 25:The room had not been cleaned properly. The food was not of a very high standard. I did not receive my newspaper. The outside tables were sticky with the previous person's rubbish on (bits of lemon extracted from drinks, dirty ashtrays) and when the staff came to take a drink order, they did not remove it, even when they delivered the drink, they just left it, attracting wasps.

Review 26:It was a very pretty building and garden. Reception staff were friendly.

Review 27:Breakfast quite poor and on the first day the three girls (staff) just stood around talking. No orange juice and very small portions. We had a room near the kitchen so late evening there was a lot of noise and again in the morning!

Review 28:Good location and lovely building.

Review 29:Very little ...but if pushed to say anything, the size of the "single room" was smaller than anticipated, and their were no "health facilities" but I wouldn't want people to have this detract from the overall positive experience.

Review 30:Location of hotel and friendliness of staff was top drawer

Review 31:The weather

Review 32:Loved the hotel and it's ideal location as the wife and my daughter had a very short walk to the town. Staff really could not have been more helpful.

Review 33:Receptionist with the personality of a paper bag Having to go up all the stairs

Review 34:Outstanding member of staff Mr Wong, always obliging - service with a smile 11/10

Review 35:Damp bathroom so mould on ceiling and toilet had bowl to collect leaking water. Bath has seen better days. Bed very soft and uncomfortable and we had a small double so rolling into middle was a problem. Put on special requests when booking that we would arrive earlier than usual check in time. We arrived at time stated and told we couldn't check in. Should have been contacted in advance to let know that this wouldn't be possible as we had stated our intention. Once we did check in and went to our room, the room was still being made...

Review 36:Nice grounds/ bar area.

Review 37:Although we stayed only the one night we were made to feel very welcome. It was a very historical building which added to the environment of welcome and comfort. The staff were very good and were happy to tell us about the place.

Review 38:Shower head and hose not good Couple of towels not great Could drop the tall lamps in rooms Ladies toilets could be nearer bar/restaurant

Review 39:Food/garden very good Staff helpful Lovely feel too place

Review 40:Wireless in the room practically did not work Very hot rooms , no air con, very limited window opening . Noisy

Review 41:Good breakfast although served from 7am slightly too late for business customers. Nice en suit bathroom. Clean room

Review 42:We were not informed there was no lift.we were on top floor and the room was overlooking kitchens so very noisy and smelly.11pm they emptied bottles into bins.felt ignored at breakfast.had to keep asking for everything.

Review 43:Location

Review 44:Be aware the rooms are fairly spread out so it can be a reasonable walk.

Review 45:beautiful location and buildings. Fabulously friendly staff. Brilliant restaurant.

Review 46:Expensive food, some fish not cooked properly. As listed heritage property, no lift. Door to room difficult to open with old key.

Review 47:Lovely surroundings, very helpful and courteous staff, enormous room, huge, comfy king-sized bed. Heritage-listed property.

Review 48:Alverton Manor is a perfect place for a wedding reception as the main hall is large enough and all the food was plentiful and well prepared and served. The bedroom was comfortable and clean.

Review 49:toilet was difficult to flush. Breakfast could have better selection, more modern, of cereal and full English was the minimum that could have been server e.g 1 sausages, 1 rasher of bacon, etc

Review 50:Friendly helpful staff

Review 51:Very minor criticism - The remoteness of the overspill car park

Review 52:Lovely building , excellent garden area, spacious room (11) albeit lack of full length mirror. Breakfast overpriced but evening bar menu fine. Very helpful staff

Review 53:Small room with no outlook, small double bed, tired bathroom in need of refurb. Did not match the expectation upon arrival and because of the size of the room which was down numerous corridors felt over priced

Review 54:Lovely grounds and good location, looks impressive upon arrival. Staff friendly and helpful

Review 55:From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were looked after by extremely friendly and helpful staff, who even came to the rescue when we let the battery in our hire car run flat. Food was most enjoyable, and the location (and the building itself) all we could have wished for.

Review 56:Not really a bad experience but the pillows were quite hard. Also The Alverton seems to have lost it's cosiness and be more for corporate customers. Where are the lovely pictures?

Review 57:The friendly staff

Review 58:We came for a wedding and found the hotel clean and comfortable. The hotel as a wedding venue was amazing and the staff were very polite, helpful and really helped make it a great day.

Review 59:Could have made sure the heating was on in the room for check-in time!! It was a little cold on arrival

Review 60:Whole atmosphere from greetings by staff to the beauty of the place

Review 61:The room was lovely with very comfortable beds and a nice view. The en-suite was outstanding with a double shower and a bathtub. Staff very nice and attentive. Good food. Great building with lots of character. Would love to stay at the Alverton again.

Review 62:The bed was very hard neither myself or my partner slept well and woke up with sore backs

Review 63:All of the staff we really really friendly made it a pleasure to talk to

Review 64:No leisure facilities/swimming pool. I would expect this at a 4 star hotel.

Review 65:Lovely old building in beautiful gardens-good staff and well appointed.

Review 66:The door to my room was left open after the cleaner had attended on day 2.

Review 67:The meals and service were very good, each member of staff was friendly and welcoming.

Review 68:Nothing bad to say, would have preferred fresh fruit for breakfast rather than the tinned varieties on offer.

Review 69:As a former property of some style and substance, this was a memorable place to stay. A few minutes walk from the city centre (and a place I remember well as a convent from my schooldays here in Truro), the grounds and architecture provided both interest and pleasure. Great spacious bathroom in my single room too!

Review 70:The staff was arrogant and generally in need of customer service training. Using the word "Madam" in an offensive way when responding to a request is never a good idea when one is paying a significant amount of money for a room. Everything seemed to be a chore for the staff, instead of what one should expect from a four star hotel. This started at booking and continued throughout the stay. Customer service training really is lacking there. Also food was really not that good, considering the cost of rooms and food. We will not be returning, nor will we recommend this hotel. There are too many great ones in the area!

Review 71:It's pet friendly and located close to Truro. Beautiful building and pleasant garden.

Review 72:We were surprised the breakfast wasn't complimentary considering the prices.

Review 73:The rooms were large, the bar and breakfast area is beautiful as well as the gardens.

Review 74:I find this hotel expensive for its facilities. It has little luxury aside of the bedroom and it's price parallels that of four star hotels in western Europe with a spa and pool. The bath and shower products supplied are not the best.

Review 75:A very comfortable beautifully furnished room. Clean, spaceous bathroom with a very good shower.

Review 76:shower was pretty woeful, it leaked and would stay where it was supposed to point, the drinks were a little steep and we asked for breakfast in our room but we're told because it was New Year's Day we could but could have brunch delivered which was a chargeable option? If you can deliver brunch why not breakfast it just smacked of trying to make money!!

Review 77:lovely room, nice bar, good location, good staff

Review 78:The band were very good if anything a little to loud A swing bad May have gone down well

Review 79:The party room looked amazing The buffet was fantastic The staff were unbelievably pleasant Altogether alovely night

Review 80:The fact that the room was freezing when we arrived

Review 81:I liked the great hall what a fabulous place and the breakfast was spot on have yet to try all the other stuff but well done for that wedding do

Review 82:There were some inconsiderate noisy guests that should have been asked to quieten down !

Review 83:The food was excellent The staff were friendly & helpful The location was central

Review 84:Cooked breakfast good but rest of breakfast buffet unexciting The radiators in our room did not work most of the time. Although there were two supplementary electric heaters the room was very cold sometimes

Review 85:Staff friendly and efficient Good location. within walking distance of the centre of Truro Suite large and very comfortable Nice bar snacks

Review 86:The quality of food was not up to the usual standards and I occasionally felt that the Xmas parties were given preferential treatment over staying guests who were dining at the same time.

Review 87:Location, comfort and surroundings.

Review 88:Medium rare filet steak was a large chuck of meat cooked rather well done on the outside in order to get enough heat on the inside for it to have been cooked at all. Shame because everything else was spot on.

Review 89:The staff, although all very young are very friendly, helpful and attentive. Always willing to share a joke with you but very good at their jobs.

Review 90:Access to the hotel up the steep narrow driveway. I imagine that this would be a nightmare if it's icy.

Review 91:Every business no matter what depends on its employees to make it stand out and no more so in the hotel business. The Alveton staff are courteous, attentive and wholly professional in their work. They make this hotel the place it is and be a far cry from the usual corporate Hiltons and Holiday Inns of this world where you have to think where you are when you wake up as they are all the same.

Review 92:Bathroom on 3rd floor room skirting boards dusty. Room clean. would have liked to see fresh Fruit at breakfast instead of tinned,

Review 93:Friendly welcome Great Location close to the town of Truro very interesting building steeped in history. Quiet tucked away from the main road. Lovely grounds Good Parking Attentive waiting staff Good breakfast except for fresh fruit Food excellent and good value Beautiful large room on the ground floor: second room allocated as I asked for one on the lower floors and had been given one on the third. Soon sorted out by reception with a smile. Comfortable Beds Not much to dislike had a very pleasant stay.

Review 94:room door lock a bit difficult. price of drinks a tad high.

Review 95:Staff in reception, excellent, happy relaxed and very helpful. room number 8 very comfortable.

Review 96:central heating did not come on until later which made for a somewhat chill feel on arrival. Window did not close properly - needs fixing before really cold weather. Our first room (40) was not up to standard and had we not been moved to room 3 this review would have been very different! I trust that our comments on the faults with this room will be attended to to keep the good reputation of the Alverton.

Review 97:Room 3 was brilliantly spacious and the luxury of two bathrooms much appreciated. breakfast (only meal taken) offered very good choice and the food was very well cooked and ample

Review 98:We had an initial problem as we had no cold water to the bath but this was sorted the next day.

Review 99:The situation of the hotel was ideal. The staff were so helpful, courteous and efficient and the meals were excellent.

Review 100:Loud modern pop music in the dining room at breakfast. We would have thought catering mostly for mature guests any music would be classical background music.

Review 101:Lovely old building and very quiet rooms and other guests. Staff were very attentive and helpful.

Review 102:I was very disappointed with my rack of lamb in the restaurant. It had only 3 small cutlets and a tiny amount of potatoes and beans. The whole meal cost over £50 and I was still hungry.I dont normally complain but this was not good enough!

Review 103:The staff were very helpful, but not enough staff at check in, one brilliant receptionist but had to wait at least ten minutes. When I checked out and made my complaint the duty manager was very attentive and reduced my restaurant bill by half.

Review 104:This is only a very minor niggle. Bar snacks are available but only up to 9pm. It would be helpful if they could extend this deadline for those not wishing to partake of a full meal in the restaurant.

Review 105:A comfortable and welcoming hotel in a historic setting and extensive grounds but within 10 minutes' walk of Truro city centre. Pleasant staff and a copious breakfast. Also free parking.

Review 106:Unfortunately breakfast started at 8.00 on the weekend and had had to be out for an engagement at 8( which is unfortunate as the breakfast menu looked very good)

Review 107:Excellent location, nice character hotel, lovely excellent value restaurant

Review 108:The night porter forgot my alarm call

Review 109:The food was tasty and well presented, and for a hotel of this standard very reasonably priced. Good real ale (Tribute, a local beer). Large aesthetically pleasing bedroom

Review 110:Very spacious room, spacious bathroom. Hotel itself is in a very beautiful historic building with lovely grounds. Excellent breakfast and very nice staff. Free of charge parking in hotel grounds (city centre is a short walk from hotel). We absolutely adored this hotel.

Review 111:Lots of stairs; very small shower cubicle in room 11 and no bath. Avoid the vegetarian option on the dinner menu - open ravioli with mushroom and squash is bland with no sauce and very small portion. Make sure you get a copy of everything you charge to your room as the system is a bit erratic. I was charged twice for the same meal -one was a total of the food and drink and the second had the food and bar bill separate. However the staff were very helpful in sorting it out when I drew it to their attention.

Review 112:Lovely building in beautiful grounds right in the heart of the city, but away from the noise. The cooked breakfasts are fabulous and included in the bed and breakfast room rate. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 113:There was no water in the rooms and it would make sense for a dog friendly hotel to have a bin discreetly outside for dog mess - we were advised by reception that guests were expected to take it with them, so we hooked our doggy poo bag onto the tow bar of our car to dispose of later ( what if were staying a week, what should we do with it then? ) Easy to resolved.

Review 114:The Building is beautiful, Staff service was excellent, Rooms were spacious and clean, Atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing and the food was lovely.

Review 115:Had mislaid Booking.Com booking, despite confirming on phone previous day, but upgraded for inconvenience

Review 116:The Great Hall was a great location for wedding reception Staff very friendly Good Tribute on draft Very comfortable bed

Review 117:Still some very old fashioned furniture in the bedrooms which look half finished, no full length mirror in our room, and please fix proper toilet roll holders in all bathrooms, the holders on the floor are less than luxurious!

Review 118:Social spaces beautifully decorated with a contemporary feel. Lunch in the restaurant was excellent.

Review 119:We stayed here in February and we loved it and the quality of the bedroom was 4* This is why we chose to return, but on entering the bedroom, I was so shocked to see a very cheap duvet cover on the bed. We had a lovely breakfast on the 1st day but the 2nd was hardly cooked. Our evening meal the night before was delicious though. Mixed feelings now.

Review 120:Most of it.

Review 121:stained fabric chairs in the bar, strange mis-match of furniture in the bar, no books to read in the "library", quite a lot of scuff marks on walls, waitresses wore grubby, stained uniforms

Review 122:excellent Sunday roast, helpful reception staff, friendly waitress at Sunday lunch and Monday breakfast, good breakfast choice, size and comfort of bed, good shower, very quiet room location (room 4), general character of building

Review 123:On arrival we changed our booking from 2 to 1 room. Staff very helpful and got the room re-sold so we didn't have to pay. Ate at restaurant rather than go out and meals were great and large! Very pleasant and will use again when dropping/collecting our daughter at University

Review 124:At the time of the visit the meals were not of the expected standard. The breakfast selection was very limited and there was a shortage of dishes.

Review 125:Large comfortable bedroom. Two bathrooms Pleasant historical building Helpful staff.

Review 126:Room at the top of the hotel requiring heaving heavy bags up several flights of stairs Small bed

Review 127:Location of the hotel Look of the hotel Friendliness of the staff Quality of the breakfast

Review 128:The exceedingly small shower, my husband could hardly move and yet the bathroom was large. Also the weddings took over any relaxing areas on both our evenings.

Review 129:The location was excellent for Torquay.

Review 130:What should a receptionist do when a guest with a room booking arrives 15 min before the check in time? No, they should NOT send the guest away. The hint; the hotel has a lounge/ terrace which serves drinks, toilets near by and the newspepars. Whilst the cost may vary depending on the standard/ quality of the room and the facilities offered, the curtesy, helpfulness and efficiency should always be professional and of high standard regardless of the cost of the room. By not ASSuming that first impressions ( one of which is appearance) would enable them to categorize a guest, receptionists avoid making an asses of themselves. More importantly, it ensures that they behave professionaly ie offer the same high quality of service to everyone. When one comes on a Sunday morning for breakfast no later than 9.20 ( breakfast served 8-10am) one does not want to be told that the breakfast may be late up to 20 minutes because a wedding party is being attended to. The hotel should book only what they can deliver - it is known as forward planning. In the end the wait was only about 10 min which is perfectly acceptable for a cooked meal- but the damage has already been done. During my stay ( 4 nights) there were wedding parties on two days. Luckily the noise was only the issue at evening meal times ( which was helpfully and efficiently sorted out for me by the bar staff - top marks for their service) as I was out during the day. Anyone who was looking forward to the peaceful and tranquil setting in the beautiful gardens would have been very disappointed. Based on my experience I would stay here again, in a single room, when the weddings were not on.

Review 131:Location, walking distance to the town and bus station. Building and grounds. My single room was specious with a large, comfortable bed and a desk, freshly and stylishly decorated. Large shower room was sparkling clean and bright ( however, do go into the shower room no. 31 and have a look at the modern, clean and attractive toilet - you will notice that something needs to be put right and if you think it is only the aesthetic you are mistaken). Free, large parking. Most staff were efficient and helpful, all were pleasant. The wi-fi did not need any codes and was working excellently in my room. The stairs were no problem- the staff took care of the the luggage. The view from the room was not pleasant but it did not matter to me - I am not using hotels to gaze out of my room's windows.

Review 132:My bed was a bit hard but that's personal preference

Review 133:Amazing food at the Alverton restaurant. Great looking castle style hotel with very nice gardens.

Review 134:errr nothing

Review 135:oh the beds huge bathroom a general sense of opulence we diden't eat at the hotel as we had other arrangements but had a delicious breakfast

Review 136:Dark room with limited view, stained carpet. Food in restaurant pretentious, price did not match quality. No problem with fine dining if "fine"!

Review 137:location, character and staff.

Review 138:Unfortunately my rump steak was very tough, I mentioned this to the waitress who said that the manager would not charge for my meal. A very fair offer indeed.

Review 139:Our room was not the higher priced double but was very nicely furnished and decorated and was most pleasant to spend time in.

Review 140:As 70+ year olds, we were dismayed to be roomed on the 2nd floor , at the furthest point, thus involving two flights of stairs. this proved difficult, especially when carrying luggage. The room itself was the most sparsely furnished of any we have stayed in. Cupboard and drawer space was inadequate, while there was no surface on which to place our tea tray until the last evening of our stay when a small coffee table was added to our room. We also had to ask for replenishment of bathroom soaps etc, and for maintenance to rectify a fault with the bath (water not running away). The bathroom shelf was not fitted properly (sloping down so that items slid off), and therefore this, too, had to be rectified during our stay.

Review 141:The staff, service and food were very good, and the location excellent. These factors largely, though not completely, made up for the criticisms attached.
