Reviews for The Sun Hotel

Review 1:Allocated an occupied room which was a little embarassing. It then took a while to find a suitable, unoccupied room. The room was not refurbished and the Shower needs upgrading, plus I banged my head on the Artex finishing on the ceiling (I'm only 6 foot).

Review 2:Great location and atmosphere. Nice to stay somewhere that doesn't feel corporate. Stayed 4 nights as a pre christmas treat with my mother. Beautiful Dining room for breakfast.Good Local Ales too. Rooms on the front have stunning views of the Castle. Fantastic base to explore the Northumberland Coast. Plenty of Parking and reliable WiFi

Review 3:We didn't like the fact that the room should have been cleaner, especially the carpet. Also, when we got soaked to the skin on our one full day there were no drying facilities - considering this is a great area for walking I was quite surprised.

Review 4:We liked the position of the hotel and there is ample parking.

Review 5:Domestic staff failed to do their job. Beds not made, room not cleaned and drinking glass not washed during 4day stay. Too much noise from adjacent rooms through paper thin walls.

Review 6:Good location with plenty of parking. Good breakfast in a very pleasant dining room.

Review 7:so friendly and comfortable , stayed for new year gala meal the food was lovely, Phil the manager and all the staff were great worked so hard and nothing a bother to them definitely stay again

Review 8:The hotel staff couldn't be more helpful and the New Year's Eve party was absolutely brilliant , well worth the 5 hour drive to the hotel ,we really couldn't fault it ! Our room we felt if to be really really picky probably needs a freshen up deco wise but was very comftable and they are now in the process of renovating all the rooms so cannot wait to see them next time we stay !!

Review 9:The Bedroom was a bit tired , looked in need of a makeover. The Restaurant wasn't open so we ate elsewhere as didn't fancy the bar.

Review 10:Breakfast was excellent, the kippers were amazing. The situation and views were great.

Review 11:Close proximity to Alnwick as visiting relations. Good parking facilities unlike Alnwick which operates a permit parking scheme which was full each day we visited.

Review 12:Restaurant was closed on night and there was football on tv in bar so no quiet place to sit and relax. No heating in restaurant at breakfast so was chilly in there.

Review 13:Good value and fab location next to castle

Review 14:Rooms were being refurbished but ours was quite tired which was a shame. Dining room quite dusty.

Review 15:Staff very friendly and nice views from the rooms. Been before and would return in summer when weather better as a lovely location

Review 16:I thought the decor had got a bit confused since my last visit several years ago. The hall and landings are traditional but our room was modern, which felt a slight mismatch!

Review 17:Location very convenient for our needs.. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. Beautiful view of the castle from our room. I love Warkworth and the Sun is in the heart of it.

Review 18:Room not cleaned properly. Quantity of freshly cut fingernails under the table near bin. Very prominent on black wooden floor, should not have been missed.

Review 19:Lovely room. Friendly staff. Good location and real value for money

Review 20:Nothing to complain about faultless

Review 21:Stayed in the Bridal room even though we've been married 23 year but room looked gorgeous so we booked it and it didn't disappoint. Lovely and warm heating on constantly especially welcome because we stayed in winter. Had a roll top bath in room and seperate toilet and sink. Staff lovely and breakfast had a good choice. View of the castle from room.

Review 22:Breakfast good but didn't like dining room lights being switched off at 9.30 as a hint to leave. Much more polite if we had just been asked! Luckily we saw the funny side.

Review 23:Excellent offer for bb. Evening Meal - food delicious and bar staff very friendly. - comfortable newly decorated rooms with view of the river

Review 24:Insufficient staffing on arrival to cope with large party of diners. Rowdy foul mouthed individual outside room after 1 a.m.

Review 25:Cosy hotel. Well furnished room. Good breakfast & friendly staff.

Review 26:TV in the room could've done with being larger and possibly repositioned so you could view from the big bath.

Review 27:The bridal room was fantastic, really good, comfortable and clean. Bed was full in comfy. Staff were friendly and helpful in that no chips on the bar menu but when I asked, they revved a large bowl up for us.

Review 28:Breakfast and the attitude of the staff member serving it, lumpy bed, dim lighting. Whole place needs tlc but polite staff and a nice atmosphere in the breakfast room would have gone far.

Review 29:Car park and location. Good sized room.

Review 30:The TV was very small and not ideal as my partner has a visual impairment.

Review 31:The Sun Hotel is lovely, so traditional with a cosy bar and great location. The room was really nice, with a fantastic free-standing bath and great décor. The breakfast was nice, with local ingredients in the full English.

Review 32:The rooms could have been more modern and cleaner. They looked abit run down.

Review 33:The location was perfect and it had a pub attached to the hotel. The breakfast was very good too.

Review 34:Terrible smell of drains in the bathroom in family room which was quite unbearable. We never complained and would return.

Review 35:Nice family hotel and good food with friendly staff.

Review 36:Although the room was nicely refurbished it was very dimly lit and it was cold. My husband bled the radiators which improved them a bit, but we were still cold for much of the time as they were controlled by a central timer. The room would have been cosy and comfortable otherwise as it was nicely furnished.

Review 37:Friendly, helpful and very hardworking staff. Welcoming bar, good breakfast, nice bar food in the evening, plenty of parking, good location. Nice bathroom, comfy bed.

Review 38:didn`t realise we would not have a shower over the bath, made it difficult for my wife to wash her hair.

Review 39:we liked where it was situated, the room was comfortable with a view of the castle, the breakfast as good, the bar was nice and friendly, bar food was quite good.

Review 40:The bar is tired and needs a facelift. The menu is a bit dull. If we'd arrived earlier, I think we'd have eaten out.

Review 41:Brilliant showers, lovely breakfast, great town. Helpful staff.

Review 42:Quiet, comfortable, good food in the bar and amazing view of castle right outside. I had to leave before breakfast so the staff kindly made me a packed lunch.

Review 43:Good location noisy as we were above the public bar and it was karaoke night the young lady who checked us in was great the place would have stopped with out her they should have more staff to help her

Review 44:Our room was a little tired but clean steps to bathroom, difficult through night. Will ask next time for a refurbished room, whic looked very nice.

Review 45:Very good location, lovely restaurant / bar area.

Review 46:There were insufficient staff. Despite putting on a brave face the staff were unable to offer an adequate service. Guests had to clear tables, remind staff of shortages, coffee, glasses, fruit juice, crockery etc. The service was very slow and I reckon that they needed 2 more staff on duty on Monday morning to provide an appropriate level of service.

Review 47:Location Styling

Review 48:Room a little small and the bed uncomfortable. The breakfast room was cold and the staff could have been more welcoming / helpful but I would stay again due to the location.

Review 49:Good location to Alnwick castle

Review 50:Road outside hotel noisier than expected

Review 51:Great staff, particularly Chelsea who seemed to be there 24 hours a day. Good food reasonably price. Relaxing atmosphere.

Review 52:Staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was excellent, an easy walk into the village centre, a great view of Warkworth Castle and plenty of car parking space.

Review 53:First room offered was extremely small and en suite was down 4 steep stairs, not clean, window difficult to open. Offered another room but meant we had to change into yet another room for the next night.

Review 54:we were there for three days, the first two breakfasts were very good but on the third day (Sunday) a different chef and we had a wait of 25 minutes for our cooked course and then it all seemed poorer quality than the previous days. Disappointing!

Review 55:Hotel entrance, corridors and public areas all very dark - possibly because quite a few of the low energy light bulbs were not working, but also because it is in need of redecoration. Don't expect lifts so we needed to carry our luggage up several sets of stairs to the room. Room was OK, if rather dated and basic.

Review 56:Great full English breakfast, good location right opposite Warkworth Castle (English Heritage), plenty of free on site parking. Plenty of places to eat nearby in the town (bar meals only in the hotel except at weekends).

Review 57:Wifi did not reach our room. Music from the bar was extremely loud and could be heard on the room and was not turned off till after midnight.

Review 58:Beds were very comfortable.

Review 59:I didn't like that I could not control the heating as you had to wait until staff felt the cold before the main heating was turned on and a minor gripe was the bath did not have a shower attachment for washing hair.

Review 60:We liked the character of the hotel the cooked breakfast, staff were friendly and our overall experience was a good one.And a lovely view from window

Review 61:Didn't have a bad experience.

Review 62:Lovely old property with a great view of the castle. the staff were excellent and went out of their way to help. Chelsea was particularly professional and friendly.

Review 63:Out dated room, though I am told there is a programme of refurbishment. Cleanliness not really up to scratch.

Review 64:Freindly staff, good food, if slightly overcooked. Situation of room, lookin onto castle.

Review 65:Bizarrely, our refurbished room had a new bath, but no shower attachment!......hair washing therefore somewhat of a challenge

Review 66:Excellent location under the castle in a very pleasant town.

Review 67:Bathroom appeared fresh but apart from the shower, handbasin and loo, was quite unclean. Old hair, dust etc behind the loo and old dust on the top of toilet water tank also heavy dust under the towel rail on the skirting board. Needed a really good vacuuming. Very poor cleaning which let the hotel down. Also worn threadbare stair carpet leading to the rooms gave a poor first impression.

Review 68:Actual bedroom very nice and spotless, bed comfy.

Review 69:The room was poor (room 2). The flush in the toilet did not work properly and the noise from the plumbing went on a bit too long. This was also the case with the neighbouring rooms facilities which could be heard. Room was in need of a serious refurbish looking tired and worn. Wifi was poor dropping in and out and for a modern solo traveller this was a pain.

Review 70:The village of Warkworth is beautiful with some great pubs, walks and a gem of a piece of British History in the castle. The staff were friendly and attentive. The cooked breakfast was for champions!

Review 71:Not a bad experience but WI-FI access was very poor (intermittent). One moment connected to the Sun Hotel, the next dis-connected.

Review 72:Room was very good, clean tidy etc. The bed nearest the window needs some attention (sorry, should have mentioned that when we were there), probably the mattress. The breakfast and dining room were excellent, as was the evening meal we had the night before. Catering very good.

Review 73:Rooms clean but could be better, dining room place mats had jam on them from the day before.

Review 74:Location is excellent, plenty of parking and Close to walks and pubs.

Review 75:Rather scruffy, overdue for refurbishment? Some threadbare and worn carpets, dirty and cracked windows. Seemed a bit neglected.

Review 76:Pleasant staff and atmosphere.

Review 77:THE ROOMS WE HAD WERE DIRTY, AND OLD ROOMS WHICH I WAS NOT AWARE OF WHEN I BOOKED THEM. MY SISTER DIDNOT RECEIVE ANY CLEAN TOWELS, ANDROOM NOT CLEANED WELL. OUR ROOM WAS DIRTY AND BED NOT CLEANED WELL. I DID NOT REALISE WHEN BOOKED WITH YOU THT WE WOULD BE IN UNREFURBISHED ROOMS. WOULD DEFINATELY NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.

Review 78:THE STAFF WERE VERY FRIENDLY

Review 79:The room we were allocated on arrival(room 2) was dirty, with a badly stained carpet and an unpleasant damp musty smell. The en-suite was also stained and dirty. In fairness, when I raised this with the member of staff (Chelsea) she was very helpful and apologetic and immediately offered another room. We were allocated to one which was completely different, modern and stylishly refurbished, with which we were completely happy. I overheard a member of staff explaining to another customer that the hotel is due to refurbish some more rooms shortly. Perhaps it would be advisable if they didn't use them until then as it spoils the experience of an otherwise very nice hotel.

Review 80:Pleasant traditional old hotel, in a good position opposite the castle. Free parking "Olde world" bar with good selection of ales. Restaurant menu had nice range of dishes including specials. The cooked breakfast, included in the room rate, was served by friendly helpful staff, and included not only good helpings of the usual "full English" but also porridge, smoked salmon and local kippers. Excellent!

Review 81:Dirty lack of staff meant that the whole place needed a total deepclean. Room 2 filthy we complained and were moved to room 8. dusty andmusty. Bathroom had been flooded by previous guest, staff knew butnothing had been done. Pictures on profile really old. Bar wallpaperhanging off, carpet filthy. Owners need to spend some money on theplace. Rear of hotel like a junk yard.Could go on.NOT Worth the money.

Review 82:Staff friendly and helpful,( wot few there were) Breakfast wasfantastic.

Review 83:No soap ,asked for some, had ask again next day. Ran out of toilet roll. Double wall socket hanging of the wall. Beds not made. Housekeeping poor.

Review 84:Food was good and staff were friendly.

Review 85:Every thing, the staff where fantastic and couldnt do enough to help, they made us a early breakfast to help us and others out knowing we had the great north run that day, the location was lovely and the people in the pub/bar where friendly, it was a ideal location for the great north run aswell.

Review 86:Rooms were very small and tacky. The staff was fine. Pub was good. Breakfast was fine. It was all about value for your money. I would not stay there again.

Review 87:Location

Review 88:Old building .no lift.wife and self oap, stairs were too many and steep. If we made a second visit, would have to insist on a lower floor room. As the place was full made best of it.

Review 89:the food very good.the service from the young ladies who seemed to run the place, was superb nothing to much trouble always a smile. Plenty of free parking good wifi good beer selection in bar. can't fault. second visit wouldn't be a problem.

Review 90:Could do with a bit of a refit, looking a bit worn out in places.

Review 91:A lovely place to stop on our way to Perth in Scotland, somewhere we had never been and were pleasantly surprised

Review 92:Small single room, no heating or reading light (though radiator and lamp were supplied immediately on request) Bathroom had not been cleaned after previous guest.

Review 93:Lovely slightly quirky hotel/bar/restaurant, helpful staff (two nice lasses who seemed to be doing everything) , food and drink good, spectacular breakfast room.

Review 94:Generally the staff were friendly and helpful

Review 95:I assumed that a hotel would have a dining room but that was unexpectedly closed. As a solo woman traveller I didn't want to sit in the bar for my evening meal. The staff could have found a corner for me and made me feel more welcome. There was no overhead light in the room, which made reading very difficult...I had planned to relax without tv and read or draw in the evening but the light was too dim. Disappointing.

Review 96:On arrival the room allocated was not the room booked. Allocated the 'bridal room' for a three night stay !! Eventually the manager sorted the room out and we had the one booked with the sea view. The car parking and grounds generally could do with a tidy up of weeds and litter. Breakfast had to be served in the bar area one morning ! Not good.

Review 97:Well situated to explore the area and coast. Eventually when we got the room pre-booked with a sea view, it was very comfortable and spacious. Evening meal food in the bar was very acceptable and good value.

Review 98:Bed wasn't comfortable. Because its a small village, their bar had a lot if customers till late, walls are paper thin so you can hear everything.

Review 99:Nice area. Breakfast included.

Review 100:The hotel was "closed" when we arrived with an emergency telephone number to contact - not very welcoming. There was no light fitting in our room, only 3 very dim lamps. There was no outside light on the main door which made it difficult when trying to input digits to get back in to hotel.

Review 101:Breakfast was good and staff were pleasant.

Review 102:Me and my boyfriend came to the sun hotel for a murder mystery event and I think it was the perfect location to have it. The staff were very kind and helpful and made us feel welcome there. The food was amazing and I found it very good value for money.

Review 103:the cleanliness of the room, very dusty, toenails and dead bee on the carpet, looked like it hadnt been hoovered for a while.. disappointed for £80.

Review 104:the breakfast and the views from the hotel room, and the location of the hotel. staff were helpful when not busy.

Review 105:some of hotel starting to look a little frayed around the edges but still clean and tidy.

Review 106:Exceelent location, Breakfast great especially famous local Craster Kippers, Local Real Ale in the Bar, newly refurbished room overlooking the castle, very friendly staff, outside seating

Review 107:The waiting and domestic were overworked, I think, but at least they all had a smile on their faces. More than I can say for Manger.

Review 108:The view from my room was amazing, waking up to the wonderful Warkworth Castle from the window!!!!!

Review 109:We stayed in the bridal suite which had just been refurbished to a high standatd. Howere there wasn't a shower, just a bath at the end of the bed. OK for a wedding night but not good enpugh for a longer stay.

Review 110:The location was very good and the quality of the food

Review 111:We used the hotel as a stop off on our way from the midlands to Scotland, as such it fitted our needs. It was clean & tidy although perhaps in need of a refresh. The staff were helpful.

Review 112:Couldn't get wifi but easy to access in hostelries nearby. No shower in the bathroom. No shelves/ surfaces for putting toiletries on in the bathroom.

Review 113:Nicely refurbished Interesting building Good starting point for visiting the Northumbrian coastline

Review 114:We stayed in the bridal suite on the evening of the wedding and it was just magical. Our friends had asked the hotel to put a bottle of bubbly in our room with a little message and it was the perfect end to our day. The bath was pure luxury! We'd do it all again tomorrow!

Review 115:Room was clean but carpet was grotty. Plug socket behind bed was hanging off with a lamp plugged in, quite dangerous. Bed wasn't the comfiest. Toilet made a loud screeching noise for a while after flushing.

Review 116:The breakfast was really good. Perfect location. Value for money.

Review 117:I didn't like the room we stayed in as there were steep steps down to the shower/toilet area. When I booked I should have been told. The room was in need of upgrade and I know this can only be done slowly, but get it done as soon as possible.

Review 118:The food was good and our stay at the hotel was more than adequate

Review 119:The shower ran out of hot water and the kettle leaked. That's life but the hotel staff made no concession for our poor experience, A hot shower in the morning is a must!. Hotel was good but terrible experience on check-out. The customer is not always right at the sun hotel.

Review 120:Nicer than expected, clean and well decorated hotel. Great for dog walkers visiting the coast. Lovely location.

Review 121:The WiFi facilities where really poor, not way of surfing the web or skyping. Emails just about manageable.

Review 122:Location, very close to the castle so nice view in the morning.

Review 123:We had a nice airy room ,the location was better than we thought for all the places we wanted to visit . Food in bar / restaurant was good value and tasty . Staff were excellent .

Review 124:Rooms were a little poky and dark and there was a humongous spider plus Web plus dust plus dirt behind the drawers next to the bed!!

Review 125:The food was great and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate my food allergy and were friendly & polite all weekend. Lovely location, would stay here again.

Review 126:We had to complain about the cleanliness of the room and the shelf in the bathroom. We also thought there was a restaurant in the Hotel be it only opened at the weekend.

Review 127:The food was very good and the location was excellent. The staff were very nice, friendly and although we had to complain, they did resolve the issues we had straight away.

Review 128:The only real complaint is the bedroom lighting - low energy bulbs which are neither use nor ornament! Never got to use the Restaurant because of infrequent openings so you are restricted to bar meals which are great but it would have been nice to sit down in comfort with space to spare. Not something that the very popular bar always allowed.

Review 129:The location is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful and it really is a pleasant place to pass the time of day.

Review 130:the shower was very poor and there was very little room to move in the bathroom. no earl grey tea.

Review 131:very dog friendly and the staff were very helpful. plenty of parking space. nice pub attached to the hotel which ran a good quiz night on the tuesday.

Review 132:Dining room very ornate but food from previous meal(s) found under table at breakfast time. No provision made for spent tea bags on breakfast bar. Sunday evening's menu just basic pub grub served in the bar.

Review 133:Helpful and friendly staff. Good value for an overnight stop.

Review 134:The hotel was generally noisy. Paper thin walls, slamming doors, and live music right underneath our room which is not great when you have a youngster who needs to sleep

Review 135:The location was really good.

Review 136:No wifi in rooms only in the bar or restaurant areas. Not much choice of places to eat out at night. Appear to only be open at weekends had to travel out of town to find open restaurants during the week

Review 137:Location and friendless of staff. views from the room. quietness of the location.

Review 138:Room needs refurbishment and shower not good. Staff on the second night not a all good and certainly need some training in people skills

Review 139:Staff on arrival great so we were really delighted. Location very good.
