Reviews for The Rutland Arms Hotel
Review 1:Yapping dogs, snobby guests. Staff professional but aloof and not friendly. Decorating stairwell on Sunday morning while guests coming down for breakfast and leaving with baggage. One waitress for 44 guest all at same time and receptionist sat in hall doing nowt.
Review 2:Good Base for walking. Food OK.
Review 3:£120 a night for a room that was more like a premier inn room. Not what was pictured. Our room wasnt in the hotel but across the road. Only got to see how nice the hotel was at breakfasr
Review 4:Was allowed our dog
Review 5:Room 6 double so we were told regrade to single disappointing.Hotel expensive for drinks no a problem if facilities good but not when you stay in a box room
Review 6:The hotel room was too warm, with radiators you could not regulate. The road outside was too noisy to open a window. A curry night on a Tuesday was advertised when in fact it wasn't on and hadn't been for a while. Most hotels serve room service or sandwiches in the bar until late in the evening, but no light snacks were available after 5 o'clock.
Review 7:The hotel was one of old charm, log fires, attentive staff, comfortable charming en suite rooms with breakfast that was served to you opposed to help yourself. The food for breakfast and on offer in the bar was excellent and we took full advantage. The location was brilliant and the bus service to local areas convenient and regular.
Review 8:Pillows uncomfortable. Lights in Dining Room too bright; would benefit from lamp shades.
Review 9:Central location of hotel. Size of Room. Ancillary facilities (ie. hairdryer, iron, ironing board, tea&coffee). Great breakfast. Efficient and friendly staff.
Review 10:Friendly and attentive staff from the receptionist, the housekeeper, the barman and the waiter. Relaxed atmosphere and superb food in the restaurant and a very good New Zealand Pinot Noir. Our second visit and will certainly stay again. We stay in the Turner room with wonderful views over Bakewell Square.
Review 11:booked a double room only to find it was was twin beds pushed together... very uncomfortable. plastic glasses in room which split, not the facilities you would expect for the price.
Review 12:Location great right in the centre of Bakewell.
Review 13:Parking was available but typical for Europe required master driving skills to negotiate the small spaces.
Review 14:Fantastic hotel and great central location in Bakewell.
Review 15:unfortunately quite noisy, ROOM OVERLOOKED THE TRAFFIC ISLAND WHICH WAS VERY BUSY
Review 16:location in Bakewell is good staff very friendly and helpful. excellent breakfast
Review 17:The location right in the centre of the lovely town of Bakewell. The breakfast was one of the best we had. Loved the restaurant room. All staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 18:The room was a little too small for our liking with only a double bed, but that is personal preference.Unable to get WiFi in bedrooms.
Review 19:Easy access to surrounding areas. Staff very pleasant. Breakfast excellent. WiFi access was not allowed in the dining room.
Review 20:i have stayed a couple of times before in the main hotel. i found the traffic so loud i had trouble sleeping.
Review 21:location, free parking, right in the town centre, traffic noise is much better,
Review 22:Rooms a bit hot apart from room 16 which was just right. Loo ran into bowl all night in 2 rooms
Review 23:Lovely building, very friendly staff, nice rooms and modern very clean,
Review 24:Friendliness of the staff who obviously enjoyed their work and customer contact. Position of hotel in centre of Bakewell Meals - delicious Warm and comfortable
Review 25:I was on a walking holiday, which many people are in the Peak District. There was no concession to this, with no space or facilities for muddy and wet boots and clothing, particularly no where to sit in an entrance to take off outside wear. It meant I was worried about dirtying the decor.
Review 26:Warm and pretty comfortable. Waiting staff in restaurant very pleasant.
Review 27:Not clear where to park on arrival and no answer from reception when tried to call from the car which couldn't be left due to double yellow lines outside
Review 28:Good location
Review 29:We thought breakfast was included with the room but it turned out to be continental breakfast only. Imagine our surprise to be charged 12.50 pounds for a serving of scrambled eggs! The extra bed in the room for 3 people was not comfortable. That room was on the second floor and very hot, also there was no lift so these poor ladies in their 50's & 60's had to lug their suitcases up stairs.
Review 30:Convenient to the bus stop for Chatsworth.
Review 31:parking was a problem on one of the two nights we were resident.
Review 32:A separate room for our meals made our golden wedding anniversary celebration very special with our friends.
Review 33:Trying to find a parking area for the hotel initially and when we were informed as to where to park, discovered very tight/small allocated parking areas. Not easy with a large car! Crossing the road between carpark and hotel was a bit hair raising too - we had an elderly man with a walking stick, with us !
Review 34:The location was fantastic.
Review 35:Rooms and 2nd floor area in the main building really need bringing up to date.
Review 36:Breakfast was absolutely fantastic and location really is perfect. Free parking too is an excellent bonus for the location.
Review 37:Water pressure on 2nd floor so low that shower was useless. Beds rather hard.
Review 38:Staff pleasant and helpful. Good breakfasts and bar snacks. Bedroom spacious and well furnished.
Review 39:It's a very good location in the middle of the town with walks straight from the hotel. Rutland Arms is an interesting historic building. Staff were helpful and pleasant at all times.
Review 40:Great locaction in center of Bakewell with added bonus of parking. Breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious. Our courtyard room was bright and clean and not an issue being across the road. Would definitely stay again.
Review 41:Very disappointing. Small room with very sloping floor-up two long flights of stairs-no lift.Bathroom poorly equipped-uncomfortable bed-grubby carpet.Breakfast room too small so had to queue and then slow as well-the answer to the question"has the yoghurt all gone" should not be "yes",it should be "I'll get some more".Car parking difficult as very awkward spaces.
Review 42:Decent location.
Review 43:Not a bad experience as such, but traffic noise on the A6 past the hotel all night long and worse from the early hours disturbed sleep. So not great. Would prefer a courtyard room if I book again.
Review 44:Parking was awkward; not impossible and there are often spaces with so many people going in and out, difficult at times. Afternoon in the bar was pretty poor and not value for money. Sometimes a long wait at breakfast as there's lots of people, but it is cooked fresh.
Review 45:Perfect location, right in the centre. Friendly staff. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice.
Review 46:A lovely welcome staff was all pleasant liked the idea of being in the court yard felt like we was very private I'm a smoker so thought it was a good idea that you had the ash trays outside each fire exit and loved the room breakfast was lovely and we would recommend your hotel to others and would certainly stay with you again thanks ver much for a lovely weekend made our 25th wedding Anniversary a good break once again thank you .
Review 47:No lift 2 1/2 flights of steep stairs carrying a 2 stone baby having to leave the pram in the hoover cupboard under the stairs as there was no other facillities . the water pressure in the showers was very poor .
Review 48:Room 23 was very nice, quiet ,big
Review 49:The staff were very helpful and accommodating: sometimes being gluten free causes issues when away but my needs were catered for at both dinner and breakfast.
Review 50:The food wasn't great and a little expensive but it wasn't poor either.
Review 51:Location, heritage look of the building outside and very helpful waitress.
Review 52:The courtyard rooms & the car parking area are separated from the main building by a busy road that requires great care.
Review 53:This fine, stone-built hotel is centrally located for everything that you might wish to access in Bakewell. All members of staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. This hotel delivered value for money while maintaining a high standard of service. I would return with pleasure.
Review 54:Due to no lift, the stairs to the 2nd floor was a problem for one of us (as a mature person). Bathroom was very, very small in our room (no.11). However, aware that other rooms do have larger bathrooms. So sorry to add, that the mattress was not as comfortable as expected.
Review 55:Location is perfect, and very helpful, friendly staff. Could not fault the standard of cleanliness of the bathroom, bedroom linen/towels. Excellent breakfast.
Review 56:As above. It started when we rang for directions to the car park. They were so awful that after driving round the block four times and asking members of the public we were forced to abandon the car by the church and walk down to have her show us where the parking was. She was not overly friendly either.
Review 57:One of the receptionist was lovely and really helpful. The other we dealt with was not. I felt like an inconvenience to her. The young male waiter at breakfast was also very efficient and polite. If it wasn't for that one receptionist I could not fault our stay.
Review 58:No lift superior room was small but that seemed to be the size of most rooms. The breakfast was awful burnt croissants liquid yoghurt due to the heat and it took forever to get a cooked breakfast due to an issue in the kitchen (extractor I think). The hotel were good in that they refunded a breakfast as a goodwill gesture. Parking over the road is tricky but works you double park and leave keys with reception.
Review 59:Location is very central friendly helpful staff
Review 60:Despite booking this hotel in November 2014 and confirming my details on12th April this year I did not have the room I booked. I arrived at thehotel with my wife, grandson and pet to be told that I had only booked asingle room, despite taking a copy of the booking confirmation. Thestaff were indifferent to the situation and to accommodate us put asmall bed in a small room leaving us no where for our clothes anddifficulty in getting in and out of the room. Despite all thisinconvenience I was still charged full price.
Review 61:Leaving.
Review 62:The breakfast was lovely. The beds were comfortable and even though the hotel is off a busy road there was hardly any noise. The rooms were nicely decorated and clean.
Review 63:Unable to open bedroom window (sash cord broken) therefore quite stuffy at times.
Review 64:Location is perfect, both for the views and access to public transport. Staff very helpful and friendly.
Review 65:Poor wifi connection, generally clueless about gluten free diet (the staff need to understand that such a diet is not a fad but is for medical reasons and has rotten consequences if not taken seriously), little pride in presentation of meals, slow waitress service (not enough staff available to wait on the guests) slow shower flow so impossible to wash medium to long length hair).
Review 66:Excellent location and good parking, lovely decor, very comfortable and clean room, very friendly staff, beautiful building right beside the Rutland antiques' centre.
Review 67:Cold water ran hot in our room, shower was pathetic. Parking awkward and guests really need directions up front to avoid anxiety on arrival.
Review 68:Fantastic location
Review 69:Poor evening meal. Sausages for breakfast were uncooked even after sending them back. There is no chef, there is a poor cook. Shower very slow. Unclean bathroom.
Review 70:Near to Chatsworth House
Review 71:No WiFi in bedroom. Room probably in need of new furnishings & pillows.
Review 72:Overall very satisfied. Convenient& clean. Pleasant & helpful staff.
Review 73:Phones in annexe rooms not working
Review 74:Room a good size rather than a cramped single I was expecting. Staff friendly.. Good food. everywhere very clean.
Review 75:The room had underfloor heating & heated towel rail in the bathroom which was on all night. No adjustable controls & room was too hot. Unnecessary in a warm June.
Review 76:Lovely clean rooms and friendly staff
Review 77:The Wifi was poor; I suspect that they have something else interfering with the signal. The car park wasn't big enough for the number of rooms they have, especially when they have a wedding reception on!
Review 78:The room, the food and the friendliness of the staff were all what I'd expect from this category of hotel.
Review 79:very warm on top floor
Review 80:convenience to public transport. Being served at breakfast rather than buffet. Friendly helpful staff . Available car park facilities in the centre of town
Review 81:Having to park in public carpark to find out where hotel parking was,it was market day and traffic was heavy.
Review 82:Comfortable accommodation in courtyard with parking outside room.
Review 83:Not a bad experience but housekeeping staff changed towels even though, as requested in your notice in the bathroom, I had hung them on towel rail (to help save the universe!). Reported the first day and the second.
Review 84:Help was offered without a request and when I did ask, help was given willingly. Staff friendly, helpful and professional. I had a great stay so Thank you all.
Review 85:Having to lug the bags up the staircase was rather difficult, and the room above the pub noisy!
Review 86:The room was spacious and clean, the beds good! There was a teamaker and the staff was very friendly albeit strange!
Review 87:We did not like the original allocated room across the busy road. We did think this should have been flagged at booking. If it had been we would have queried why we were not in the Hotel proper and either agreed to a double room then, or choose another Hotel.
Review 88:Helpful staff and comfortable rooms. We were moved to another room immediately we raised concerns about our allocated room.
Review 89:Room was clean but small and only just adequate, particularly in the light of the room cost (£155 per night B&B) which all in our party considered vastly overpriced.
Review 90:Breakfast was very good. Staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating.
Review 91:The parking was difficult as I had no idea where to put car on entering Bakewell. I dumped it up a side street thanks to a resident offering me her drive and then went on foot to enquire at reception. Please use bigger signage and tell us when we book want to do on arriving in town. Once it was sorted I had few problems but it did cause much anxiety for a solo traveller. The A6is a devil to cross but then many reviews have picked up on this. Blind bend on exiting courtyard.
Review 92:The room was clean and bed comfy. Lots of towels and lovely breakfast
Review 93:Wi-Fi only in reception area
Review 94:Hotel was well located in the center of town, rooms had good en-suite facilities, good walks around the town and along the river, good free parking,
Review 95:Vegetarian sausages a bit strange! Were really various vegetables fried up in mashed potato.
Review 96:Cleanliness and quiet; proper biscuits (cookies) with tea and coffee in room. Decor to my liking. Good room size.
Review 97:Parking a bit difficult, room a bit cramped and rather noisy from road.
Review 98:Lovely place to visit. Went to Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth. Bakewell lovely and surroundings amazing. Went to Piedaniels restaurant in Bakewell for dinner, which was outstandingly well cooked and most reasonable.
Review 99:The shower was not good. There was no pressure and it was very hard to get it right - it went from boiling to freezing with not much in between.
Review 100:The position was perfect right in the heart of Bakewell. Nice big room and charming old world hotel.
Review 101:There's only 1 person at reception on the phone when I arrived. No one to help with my luggage. walls too thin! Can feel people walking. Unfair treatment in a restaurant called rileys to foreigners.
Review 102:Where the buses are and near the river. Great help from a male staff who just got back from his holiday when I was leaving.he carried my luggage to the bus!
Review 103:Bathroom was cleanish, but old and tired, could do with a good face lift. We were in court yard room and carpet was quiet stained.
Review 104:Comfort of bed and fluffy towels.Parking available at no extra cost.
Review 105:we had no idea that we would have to cross a very busy road to reach our room. Not good to have to run across road in rain to get breakfast!
Review 106:breakfast was very good Nice staff
Review 107:Having visited Bakewell before but never stayed, I was really looking forward to this hotel as the hotel looks from the outside amazing. I was in the court yard accommodation and was disappointed immediately when I was asked to go over the road, under the arch, turn left and go through the door.......which can only be described as a fire exit. My disappointment continued when I reached the room, which can only be described as a small room with a dirty carpet, dirty marks on the walls, a dirty bath with hairs and a dirty floor and toilet. I have stayed in many hotels around the country in some wonderful places and hotels, paying more and less for a room. The cost of this venue for a night did not reflect the appalling state of the room. I felt dirty in it. When I was asked about my stay I explained all of this and got a 'Oh I am sorry' from the receptionist. Truly disappointed.
Review 108:In the end.......leaving!
Review 109:Decor in the main part of the hotel was a little old fashioned, but very minor thing.
Review 110:Clean, comfortable, excellent breakfast and wifi works well even in the Courtyard across the road. Parking available too.
Review 111:As mentioned above, the towel rail was hot all night, was given a room right next to road so unable to keep windows open because of noise. We have never in our 41 years of marriage had such a horrible night sleep. Carpet was filthy!! Towels were like cardboard.
Review 112:Breakfast was good
Review 113:Staff seemed a little clueless at times especially when the fire alarm went off at 2am and we had to hunt for staff and advise them what to do
Review 114:Nice rooms, comfy beds
Review 115:I travel a lot for business and leisure and have to rate the as one ofthe poorest hotels I have stayed in - especially for the exorbitantcost! Staff: poor attitude, breakfast staff couldn't get simpleorders correct and blamed it on the guest that they received the wrongbreakfast. Room: small with generic furniture. Bathroom was in a poorstate with stained grout and was tiny. The water pressure was noexistent and kept going from scalding hot to freezing cold. We stayed inthe courtyard in an end room that is right on a busy corner with a busstop directly opposite, the room had no net curtains and therefore whenchanging we had to draw the full black out curtains and turn on thelight. Breakfast: The staff were totally away with the fairies. Portionswere small. The cold selection was hit and miss. Also I was travellingwith a gluten free person who when asking for gf toast was given amixture of normal bread and gf in the same toast rack. Firealarm: In themiddle of our 2nd night the fire alarm went off, we dutifully evacuatedand then stood in the car park as no hotel staff arrived to assist us.We had to go to the main building to find someone to help, who left usstood in the cold at 2am whilst he fixed it. Absolutely disappointingplace and a terrible stay. Will not be returning.
Review 116:Comfortable bed. Location in centre of Bakewell cannont be faulted.
Review 117:My room was at the front of the building by the main road. As I am a light sleeper all I could hear was the trucks rolling passed at 4 o'clock in the morning. Didn't sleep well!! We found that most of the staff where ok but we did have one waitress who was quite rude at breakfast. Not sure if she was having a bad day or it was her attitude.
Review 118:The room was spotless and the hotel it self was well presented. Its in the middle of Bakewell so perfect location for Chatsworth, Matlock, Buxton etc
Review 119:Bedrooms need refurbishing cleanliss not that good bathroom scruffy black mould in corners rather unwelcoming feel especially bathroom the whole bedroom could do with redecorating and definitely new carpet needed asap
Review 120:Restaurant bar and friendliness of staff
Review 121:The room was small, bathroom needed a spring clean, could feel springs through mattress, window didn't open properly, windows were filthy, 3 coat hangers in the wardrobe, large gap under bedroom door - the list is endless !
Review 122:Location - however if staying in the Courtyard be prepared to cross a busy road to the hotel
Review 123:Noisy room next to noisy street. Low quality furniture, bed and bathroom, no better than a travel lodge. Was overall far too expensive for what you got.
Review 124:Breakfast was good and quick service
Review 125:The hotel needs a lick of paint and more flowers would have been lovely. There were none when we stayed. The coffee at breakfast is horrible.
Review 126:I enjoyed the individual style of the hotel as opposed to being in a cookie cutter hotel.
Review 127:Parking facilities were not great as away from hotel on a busy road and husband is disabled. The ramp into hotel was quite old and steep and difficult for the scooter to use. However had Courtyard room so that was handy for sleeping
Review 128:Staff were very nicel
Review 129:Breakfast was uninspiring, why do hotels bring out the toast before you have even ordered! So no toast, or cold toast with eggs?? Hot brown liquid passed off as coffee
Review 130:That we only had one night here
Review 131:Dirty bedroom carpet and mouldy sealant around bath. Tiny double room(6) in main building and terrible view from window.
Review 132:The staff and breakfast were excellent
Review 133:The room was too hot to be able to sleep. The shower didn't work properly. The food was poor and they ran out of breakfast 30 minutes before finishing time. When asked if they could bring out some more the reply was " I will try".
Review 134:The visits we had around the area
Review 135:Requested early check in via email 3 days earlier & had no response. When we arrived this early check in was made so difficult that we were unable to do so. Wifi awful.
Review 136:Lovely room, breakfast staff most friendly. Close proximity to Chatsworth House which was purpose of stay.
Review 137:The bed was so comfy! A lovely hotel with friendly staff, nice breakfast and good bar area. Location is central but sleepy Bakewell means there's no disturbance from traffic. A great base from which to explore the Peak District.
Review 138:Small carpark but it wasn't really an issue.
Review 139:Good food. A warm and friendly welcome. Good staff. Hotel was in an ideal location and warm and inviting.
