Reviews for Maenan Abbey Hotel

Review 1:The entrance from the road was difficult to see at night, perhaps there was a problem with the lighting on the signs due to recent bad weather. Other pet owners had not cleaned up after their dogs on the front lawned are, good thing nobody wanted to sit outside in January!

Review 2:The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, even offered to drive us to the wedding we were attending nearby. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was good.

Review 3:We had a wonderful stay. The staff were very welcoming and went out of their way to ensure our comfort. The food was excellent. Location is great for accessing local attractions.

Review 4:The bedroom (family suite) was poorly situated on the 2nd floor and the rooms were in need of a good clean as there was excessive dust on all surfaces. The reception was not staffed, therefore we had to seek out staff in either the bar or dining rooms

Review 5:The 3 course evening meal was both excellent quality and value

Review 6:Staff were able to cater for my wife's lactose and gluten intolerance. She broke her foot a few days before we arrived and they rearranged our room without any problems. We ate at the hotel and there was a large choice of excellently produced fayre.

Review 7:The staff in this hotel were so friendly and helpful. Especially Dave and the two lovely ladies who served breakfast and also cleaned rooms. We were attending a family event and so had a number of rooms between us. All rooms were well appointed and clean. The food we had theoughout our stay was very good and service was always with a smile. My brothers family came with their dog Lily and were impressed with the welcome their beloved Beagle received! We would definitely recommend this hotel. This hotel is quirky and comfortable and whilst not in the best condition, this was more than compensated by the staff!

Review 8:the bed had no protector so you slept on a sheet on the mattress. there was a constant noise all night which kept us awake and the bath took an age to fill as the pressure was so low, the complimentary shower gel and shampoo was one sample bottle of each between us.

Review 9:the food was quite nice

Review 10:Put in different room to that promised on booking. Double bed instead of 2 singles. Bed uncomfortably hard. Duvet too small for bed and poor quality. Dirty marks on shower tray, shower head holder faulty, grout stained black in some joints. Dinners pretentious but poor and small. Breakfasts cooked in stale oil/fat and smelling of it. One waitress at breakfast (lovely lady) who doubled as 'housekeeping'.

Review 11:Nice character building in beautiful location. Good base for day trips elsewhere.

Review 12:absolute first class stay from when we arrived to when we left, food was excellent room was super, we were made to feel well at home and they look after your pet as if they were there own and the staff were superb I would recommend this hotel to anyone 10/10

Review 13:For a Premier Room the bath / shower facilities were in adequate. It was impossible to shower and to run a bath took nearly thirty minutes. The water pressure was to low and needs addressing

Review 14:Had to wait over two hours for our room to be ready even though we arrived 30 mins past the check in start time, breakfast good, lunch and dinner are only open for two hours each so very limited for dining options, room was a good size and fairly clean but wallpaper behind bed had brown water marks/stains all over it due to a leak sometime in the past, had to check out two days early due to family problems but would have checked out anyway, far to pricey for the standard of the room we had

Review 15:Location, staff friendly but fighting a losing battle

Review 16:Staff seemed very disorganised and service was equally inconsistent. We stayed in best suite in hotel and were very disappointed with room cleanliness. Could write your name in dust on all surfaces and grime on bathroom tiles.

Review 17:Staff were very friendly and helpful; Particularly the lady who covered breakfasts.....very bright and cheerful.

Review 18:What a shame about this place, such a beautiful building but it is like no-one wants to keep it maintained. Also there is no reception, so your forever looking for someone to help you. This place has real potential but it was like no one cared about it. When I mentioned the shower didn't work in the room, the girl replied and said she knew and it has always been like that. One couple were late getting back to the hotel as there taxi didn't turn up and there was no one to let them in (11pm), they found the managers house out the back to let them in. They actually woke everyone up in the hotel because no picked up the hotel.

Review 19:I like my room, with the four-poster bed and the sun coming through the window. It was pretty and the bed was nice

Review 20:Very unorganised at breakfast. Toast took over an hour in total which was unacceptable really. Received an overcooked egg then an undercooked egg so was left hungry before starting the day. Good quality ingredients in evening dishes but sauces that didn't go at all with the starters added for mere decoration was needless pretense that reduced the meal quality

Review 21:Evening staff and service very good. Beautiful exterior of building

Review 22:The room was dusty, the air was stuffy, there cobwebs, the carpet was grubby, covered in dirt and stains. Bed pillows were filthy, the room was freezing. The toilet would take forever to fill up, the water pressure in the toilet was low, this was a big disappointment had to leave early as my daughter kept having asthma attacks becoz of the dust, cold, stale air and strong smell of cigerette smoke.

Review 23:The location

Review 24:The shower head was not sercured to the wall and ment I had to try and have a hand held shower. Also, the ensuite door would not close due to fact it had not been fitted incorrectly.good

Review 25:Evening meal was very good. Just what I needed after a long car journey. Breakfast was exellent, and the lady member of staff was helpful .

Review 26:Limited breakfast choice. Poor times for breakfast. Too few staff trying to do too much. Very uncomfortable duvet. Can hear other guests snoring and talking through walls and ceiling.

Review 27:Pet friendly. Good location.

Review 28:Ordered kippers for breakfast, but wasn't offered scrambled eggs or grilled tomatoes. 2 fillets is too much, would have preferred 1 with said eggs

Review 29:Old building, beautiful details ie curtains decor, position, virws

Review 30:booked a suite for 3 adults and was disappointed in the fact that it lacked comfort and was for 2 people as it only had 2 hard chairs. there were no sockets in 2nd bedroom ,no bedside lamps or table and the bathroom door didn't shut properly. To use the bathroom you had to disturb the second bedroom's occupants, not ideal.

Review 31:The location was good and the Abbey well kept ,grounds and cleanliness etc. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 32:Lacked atmosphere - perhaps only use 1 lounge and furnish appropriately. eg the bar seemed more popular so move some sofas into it? Background music over breakfast?

Review 33:A beautiful building

Review 34:Service at evening meal rather poor, asked several times for a jug of water then came in a jug with a large crack all around, no napkins. My husband was served his starter and the lad said "oh there's a spider on your plate" pushed it off then gave the plate to my husband. No apology, just carried on. Asked if he could clear the dessert plates while 2 people were still eating. Not impressed as it was my husbands 80th birthday.

Review 35:One dish at evening meal. BBQ sauce had extra tomato ketchup in it, not nice. Told waitress about it. She was very apologetic.

Review 36:Excellent food and beautiful room with view of mountains. Lovely staff. Very clean and tidy hotel.

Review 37:Central location and the history of the Hotel really made this stay special, in addition with having our little spaniel Molly with us. Staff were great and bedroom room was large and could easily have received a second armchair. Food was superb both breakfast and evening meals in fact we decided to head back and eat in the hotel every evening. Excellent value. A little tlc required for some of the bar furniture and wood floor.

Review 38:This was by far the best hotel we have ever stayed in, the manager made a personal effort to come and speak with us and greet the dog, making us feel very welcome, the staff where also amazing all the little touches made the stay extra special. The rooms where fantastic and couldn't of asked for a better stay. Will be visiting again very soon!

Review 39:This ornately furnished hotel had a very pleasant ambience. The staff were friendly and helpful. The menu was varied with plenty of choice. The food was well cooked and ample.

Review 40:Room 1 - a very small window so hardly any daylight, dull lighting (had lights on all the time) tiny tv. More staff needed, there is no reception desk (just a shelf) which is unmanned.

Review 41:Furnishings very nice, food was tasty and there was a large car park.

Review 42:Nothing negative to comment about only that our stay ended too soon.

Review 43:Every aspect was fantastic, the location, the hotel, the staff, food and drink and the atmosphere topped off an amazing weekend. A big thank you to Dave the manager.

Review 44:Jacuzzi bath not working and very slow to fill

Review 45:Good room and friendly staff. Pet friendly. Beautiful setting in the Conwy Valley for walking and visits to local attractions.

Review 46:Our only criticism was that the bathroom floor looked old and in need of a deep clean or replacement. However all other aspects of the en suite and bedroom were spotless.

Review 47:The hotel had an old world charm and was run by friendly, helpful people. It was in a central position for us to visit the best places.

Review 48:I did not have a car, which made me a bit cautious with how I originally was going to get to the abbey from town. However, there is a bus and the abbey is more than willing to help with arranging local transportation. I just didn't know that until I arrived - this might be something they could advertise or note on booking.com.

Review 49:The staff and service here was great. I enjoyed the atmosphere created in the different sitting rooms downstairs that created a wonderful atmosphere to get to know other guests or relax in a comfortable chair with a book. There were great walking trails that could be accessed straight from the abbey. It was easy to access Llanrwst, Snowdon and Betws from here.

Review 50:Nothing

Review 51:Staff were superb, made you feel really welcome. Good food. Nice friendly, relaxed atmosphere. No one was phased by our excitable cocker spaniel!

Review 52:We arrived at 7.35 on a Sunday evening, and were told that the kitchen closed at 7.30. We were advised to travel into the next village and eat there. We did get an apology and an adjustment to the bill on our return. The hotal smelled of the hot fat of cooking chips. The room was quirky!, lots of nooks and crannies, lovely view over the next door caravan park. Tiny shower, couldnt put arms out to the side.Bathroom wasnt the cleanest either. Also thinking of adding this hotel to the list of bad bed hotels.

Review 53:Location was lovely.

Review 54:Unfortunately I did not realise there was no lift and I have a lung problem. My room was 2 flights up. There was help with my luggage.

Review 55:The baronial style of the the building, on and out. The instant help and attention of staff. Especially I needed help going up the stairs The cat also greeting people

Review 56:The bed in room 8 was past its sell by date the springs crunched everytime I moved. There was only one bedside table and lamp, I suspect it is only used for singletons. None of the old Crittal windows shut properly and when the north wind blew the bathroom was cold. The curtains were thin, black out blinds needed.

Review 57:The staff were lovely and attentive. The location was excellent for touring. The place did have a certain charm. Food was very good.

Review 58:The only thing was breakfast could have been bigger , and more choice on offer, particularly as I'm a vegetarian Location slightly isolated. No iron - v unusual these days

Review 59:Staff v helpful and friendly Free upgrade for no apparent reason

Review 60:The TV and wifi signal was very poor, and the poor lady who is left to serve breakfast by herself every morning

Review 61:The history of the building, it's decor. The Staff were very friendly and efficient. The quality of the food was excellent.

Review 62:No wifi in room, even though signal and booster seen. Double bed was two singles zipped together so uncomfortable. Little choice of refreshments in rooms (only one tea and one coffee choice). Wii games hit and miss, dvd player in main room didn't work, but other one did.Bathroom tired. Compared to a premier inn, it seemed a bit overpriced for the facilities.

Review 63:Friendly staff, beautiful and tasty food and stunning location.

Review 64:there was cat hairs all over the bed. we didn't take a cat the jazuzzi bath didn't work we had to wait ages in the so called reception for staff . our entrance up stairs with a large suitcase was blocked by a setee opposite . don't know why it was there saw a staff member cleaning in a hoody????? and trainers. very unprofessional. our bedroom seemed to lose its charm as they put all kinds of miss matched furniture in there. it didn't go with the theme of the room.

Review 65:the food

Review 66:Staff were efficient, friendly and so nice to our elderly parents. Breakfast had good selection and cooked breakfast was enough until dinner. Rooms were spacious, clean and bed was really comfortable.

Review 67:Quite expensive, dated decor

Review 68:Stayed one night and ate in hotel. The staff were very attentive both on arrival and the next morning. Dinner and breakfast were excellent.

Review 69:Service was very poor, food was very expensive, doesn't fill you up. People forgetting things or just simply don't know wether they have it or not. Sheff was inflexible with orders, couldn't make instead of caramelised red onion plane fryed red onion as a replacement.

Review 70:The building was very nice so as the room, beautiful surrounding.

Review 71:No toilet paper in the room and when my husband went down 10'30 pm unable to find any staff had to take some from the downstairs toilet.we had a vegetarian meal which was left as it was very stodgy and unreadable.the shower cubicle in the room was very small.also having the reception near the dining room entrance and not near the front door stood there for 10mins waiting to book in and also on leaving.also the breakfast when we ordered toast all we had was 1slice each very mean I thought and when friends asked for more you have already had said the waitress.

Review 72:The meal

Review 73:Noise could be heard from behind one of the walls. Boiler

Review 74:Were given a upgrade to a suite good food at a reasonable price Good customer care. Non intrusive but efficient and responsive beautiful building lovely experience and will return to spend more time at this hotel

Review 75:Could do with a decent spring clean and sorting out some small things e.g. storing speakers in hallways to bedrooms and not automatically putting ice in a gin and tonic!

Review 76:Place has a nice overall character, staff are friendly

Review 77:Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff who went above and beyond. Tastefully decorated family suite with good facilities. Excellent food. Fabulous location. We will definitely return.

Review 78:The supply of heating for the room and the water was less than satisfactory.

Review 79:The staff were exceptionally friendly and the location was perfect for my reasons for travelling.

Review 80:The bedroom up in the eaves was a bit of a pain with the need to be careful not to bang ones head, other than that it was fine

Review 81:The situation is excellent for the Snowdonia region. There is a reasonable menu and the food was well prepared and presented, The pleasant bar serves excellent local ale on hand pump

Review 82:A very lovely experience which my daughter and I enjoyed immensely. the staff could not be more helpful and courteous. A beautiful setting, a place I would recommend to anyone.

Review 83:Amazed to find the restaurant shuts at 7.30pm...I arrived at 7.40pm after driving all day. It was suggested I drove down the road to Llanwrst. Pleased I did as Ty Asha Balti in Llanwrst was a great find - really helpful and friendly...and great food.

Review 84:WIFI access was great

Review 85:located a bit closer to the road than we expected but it didn't spoil our stay

Review 86:the room was exactly as described and as the picture on the website the evening meal in the restaurant the excellent service and politeness of the staff

Review 87:The room was disappointing for the money. One window looked onto a caravan site, the other onto a wall. It had strange 'felt' floor covering and the 'en suite' was accessed through a precariously hanging sliding door. We could hear snoring coming from other rooms all night and, although the lovely lady serving breakfast was very apologetic, we waited over half an hour to be served, eventually having to ask for some coffee to keep us going.

Review 88:Friendly staff who were working hard to please.

Review 89:The shower temperature was so hot, we had to use the sink to have a wash. Even on the lowest setting, it was scalding hot. We did ask for this to be looked at but it wasn't resolved.

Review 90:Location and room was lovely.

Review 91:The shower was very poor. The service in the restaurant was a little odd - a bit like Fawlty Towers! - with overloud music from the pianola that set my party's nerves jangling.

Review 92:The hotel is a lovely building and it's in a super location. Our room was very well appointed but overall the hotel just lacks that finesse that would really put it up there with the best. It has the potential to be wonderful and we'd try it again.

Review 93:The only minor downside was that the breakfast was quite small. I.e. one rashen of bacon, one egg, one sausage... it was more a child portion than an adult one.

Review 94:We had a lovely nights stay as a family in the hotel. The staff were very accomadating and couldnt do enough for us.

Review 95:unclean hot water can't cope forced to sit in the bar before dinner uncomfortable room promised an early breakfast on departure, given nothing way too expensive

Review 96:Our party of three occupied two rooms both were spacious and comfortable. However one room had plenty of storage for clothes and a luggage stand, whilst the other room did not have adequate storage or a luggage stand, which would have been useful owing to the lack of drawer space. In the bathroom there was only one hook on the back of the door and there was no shelf to hold toiletry bags with no hanging loop.. There was no grab bar in the shower area, no bath mat was provided during our stay -but perhaps we should have asked for one! The slider bar of the shower was useless as it had NOT been assembled correctly so we had to use the shower head as a hand held set which was not good. Also we found adjusting the temperature difficult. More choice on the dinner menu for vegetarians would be nice.

Review 97:Building and grounds lovely, management and staff very pleasant and courteous. Heated towel rails was good, & daily clean towels. Food: Plenty of choice on the menu, food was delicious and plenty of vegetables. Breakfasts - good all round choice!

Review 98:The staff were all accommodating and friendly. We went with our 3month old puppy and he was spoilt. The food was excellently priced and delicious, some of the best cuisine we've ever had. This was our first holiday with our puppy and we were more than impressed with how pet friendly and helpful everyone was. Highly recommend

Review 99:Only one waitress at breakfast and so service slow. Why do they not want you to change food items from menu, ie. scrambled egg instead of poached.

Review 100:Food, staff friendly and helpful, location for N. Wales sites and touring.

Review 101:Decor is somewhat in the past but hey, it was an abbey and who wants Premier Inn decor anyway!

Review 102:Food in the evening Very friendly welcome Staircase is a real showstopper

Review 103:I felt that there could have been more staff serving breakfast, did not get any toast with breakfast on first morning, after asking twice. second morning no cereal but it was brought out after we had started to eat our breakfast and the pot of tea was not hot. I am glad I did not stay for an evening meal if this is the service at breakfast.

Review 104:Friendly staff, clean and comfortable room, lovely location

Review 105:The food was very off the palette cuisine. Not very simple food. The double bed was very hard.

Review 106:The location was stunning. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Very beautiful building full of character.

Review 107:The menu offered very off the palette cuisine. It didn't offer simple food.

Review 108:The staff were excellent. The location was fabulous. The rooms were large and cool.

Review 109:Rooms are a bit quirky in shape but that adds to the character. A major factor is that there is no lift, especially if like me you are getting on and you are on the second floor. I have stayed here before and it was a bit more expensive this time round - however, it still represents value.

Review 110:Quiet and secluded but is very handy to travel to almost anywhere from in North Wales. Whilst quite it is not without life and there is a bar with a case ale on! Staff are very helpful. The food is probably the best I have ever in nay hotel - truly excellent. Oh and there is buckets of parking.

Review 111:I didn't dislike anything. If I wanted a modern, souless slick hotel I'd stay at a Premier Inn.

Review 112:The children loved the bedroom decor, the adults appreciated the space. Our dog enjoyed being included. The breakfast was superb & the hotel exterior looks magnificent. We will be back.

Review 113:We loved it, the staff are friendly, warm and welcoming. The hotel is so full of character and truly enchanting. We will return very soon. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. Should be a five star.

Review 114:I can't think of anything I didn't like , I would be nit picking if I said the discription of the king prawns on the lunch menu could perhaps be mistaken for small frozen prawns!!!

Review 115:A warm welcome from everyone friendly staff , very good food , the best cooked breakfast I've had in a hotel.

Review 116:didn't have our reservation at check in but fixed promptly then rooms weren't ready on arrival. When they were could have done with a bit of a dust but I'm just nit-picking really. Stairs are steep - wouldn't be good for people with limited mobility.

Review 117:Gorgeous old monastery with heaps of character and lovely grounds. Our first stay here but we met lots of repeat guests who were treated like family. A lovely atmosphere and very animal friendly for dogs/cats. Rooms gradually being updated with Laura Ashley soft furnishings and rooms had lots of character. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Nice bar and restaurant.

Review 118:Because it is short of staff, we had to wait quite long to do the check in and wait for breakfast. That being said, everyone is so friendly that it really did not matter. But not a good thing if you are in a hurry.

Review 119:The location is excellent and the staff very friendly. We were with a four month old baby and they had a cot ready waiting for us in the room.

Review 120:Rooms small, lots of noise at night from equipment etc; dripping could be heard all night when raining. Rooms need updating and level of equipment needs improving ( plastic bins )

Review 121:Very happy to allow early booking in, breakfast very good. Bedding clean, staff competent if not professional

Review 122:I was on the 2nd floor and as there is no lift there are 2 fairly steep flights of stairs to climb. It wasnt reallly a problem for me but it could be for some

Review 123:Beautiful location with nice gardens and ample easy parking. The tariffs are very reasonabel for a 3star hotel and the evening meals which are excellent are extremely good value for money I would definitely stay here againI

Review 124:When arrived just handed a room key told direction and left to find where every thing else was. Top floor bedroom ceiling very low banged head 3 times. Barman didn't know how to make Cocktails. TV reception very poor.

Review 125:Peaceful, easy accessible, good breakfast.

Review 126:Cats walking on the bar and a dog in the restaurant, lovely frendly animals but should not be in food enviroments, pet hair on the carpets, valence sheets on beds torn and dirty. the matress itself was squeaking and groaning, it felt like sleeping on hardboard.

Review 127:The staff were great, very frendy and could not do more for you, they were extremely attentive, the food was fantastic, we would go back just for food!! the grounds and house were lovely, overall a good stay.

Review 128:The room was very hot even when the windows were opened. Made sleeping very difficult.

Review 129:Staff friendly and accommodating, style of room was different.

Review 130:Understaffed

Review 131:Indeed of refurbishment, looks tired and is very expensive for what it is

Review 132:staff bullying other staff, not professional

Review 133:penthouse suite - not enough light and some lights were not working.

Review 134:food staff - very helpful wedding suite
