Reviews for Château d'Urtubie
Review 1:Everything was fabulous just a shame it is so close to two major busy roads. This did not affect the stay as rooms were quiet
Review 2:Character. History. Facilities. Friendliness & curtasy of owner & staff
Review 3:The Chateau has lots of history behind, do not expect all the benefits of modern digital life :)
Review 4:The owner met & greeted me in person on late arrival - more like an old friend, not another hotel guest. Very kind!
Review 5:We visited both French (St. Jean de Luz, Bayonne,) and Spanish Basque regions( Bilbao and San Sebastián) and the Chateau was a perfect starting point for each. Our host, an authentic count, was so proud of his heritage and home that we almost felt a part of it all. Our room was magnificent with high ceilings and a great bathroom and bed.
Review 6:This is a unique property where your stay includes a guided tour of the historic public rooms. We were received by the owner personally and he was very helpful during our stay.
Review 7:A unique experience staying in someone's home, made to feel very welcome. Professional and first class service, lovely breakfast - didn't get chance to use the swimming pool but the grounds are fantastic place to relax
Review 8:nothing
Review 9:The château was a charming place, rich with history, and full of character, with very welcoming owner and professional and friendly staff. It has a museum, and you'll learn about pretty colorful family history (some episodes are worth making into the movie...) of the current owners, from 14th to 21st century. Advice, maps, brochures, local restaurant menus were provided upon our arrival. There are several outdoor tables with chairs in a private area of chateau, so you can enjoy your wine or picnic-style dinner at any time. Easy access to Saint Jean de Luz, San Sebastian, Biarritz, Bayonne, and Basque villages East of A63 motorway. If you hate staying in the middle of "action" (crowds stomping a few narrow medieval streets of nearby towns) this place is for you and your car. I can recommend Château d'Urtubie to anybody traveling to French Basque country.
Review 10:The Chateau is absolutely beautiful and steeped in history. The owner was so helpful and showed us around and helped us with planning our day trips around the area. The rooms are spacious, clean and very unique. Overall, it was an extremely memorable stay and we will be back.
Review 11:Personal welcome, historic building
Review 12:Nothing
Review 13:Perfect. The owner had a lift installed which was very welcome as I was not really capable of climbing steps after a recent major operation.
Review 14:The room was spacious and decorated old world . The proprietor was so helpful in giving us maps and route suggestions.
Review 15:Very helpful and informative host. Chateau ambience and experience. Swimming pool.
Review 16:Nothing.
Review 17:Staff and history of the structure
Review 18:No negative comments
Review 19:A wonderful place to stay. The Count (owner)extremely welcoming. Quite an experience
Review 20:Sadly, the noise of the road which is a real shame because the owner is so pleasant and house stunning.
Review 21:Lovely historic chateau - the real thing. Beautiful furnishings, good ambiance. Owner very pleasant, staff professional and efficient.
Review 22:Having to leave!
Review 23:This Chateau has the WOW factor! Spacious, luxurious, quiet & peaceful rooms with every modern convience, even catering for our english penchant for tea on tap. Perfectly situated for exploring St Jean de Luz, San Sebastian and the surrounding areas. Highly recommended.
Review 24:Nothing - we would stay here again and have recommend it to friends.
Review 25:A charming and attentive host. The history and ambience of the chateau. Perfect location when driving from Portugal to UK - not far off main route.
Review 26:From the moment we arrived we were welcomed as guests rather than "paying visitors". We have stayed in several chateau but the standards of excellence at the Chateau D' Urtibe far exceeded our expectations. It was an experience that transported us to beauty and tranquility of a bygone era. It was easy to find and very convenient for visiting San Sebastian, St.Jean de Port, and other nearby villages. We are definitely returning next year!
Review 27:The owner was an exceptionally charming and friendly man. He welcomed us into his home and helped us to understand the history of the chateau and the countryside.
Review 28:Exceptional welcome from owner; beautiful castle and grounds; very helpful staff giving advice on good local restaurants and making reservations. Comfortable room with all modern conveniences.
Review 29:We wished we could stay longer because it was so lovely.
Review 30:It was wonderful and the host is fabulous with lots of helpful information. Breakfast is really nice. It is really close to St Jean-de-Luz and not too far from San Sebastian. Felt special staying in a chateau!
Review 31:We loved everything about the Chateau d'Urtubie. The chateau itself is stunning, when you drive up to it. We were given a tour of the building, a brief history and shown to our room by the owner himself. His family has owned the chateau for 23 generations, since the 14th century. The chateau is delightful both inside and out, with extensive grounds, a large and lovely pool, and a very nice restaurant serving Basque specialties only a short walk (200m.) distance. A copious breakfast is served in the pleasant breakfast room, or, weather permitting, on the terrace. We were only ten minutes drive from the lovely beach at Hendaye, and even closer to the charming seaside town of St-Jean de Luz. Staff were helpful, efficient and friendly. Given my surroundings, I thought the rates very reasonable.
Review 32:The weather, but, as the french said, in 30 years they didn't have such a bad spring :-). Concerning the accommodation: it was perfect.
Review 33:In this beautiful historical building we were received in a very warm and professional way, including a quick tour and historical background. This Castle is in the hands of the same family since 1341. The bedroom was very nice, clean and spacious. The bathroom had a shower AND a bathtub.Although next to a highway we didn't hear a sound, and had a great nights rest, also because of the fantastic mattresses. A lift is installed, which must have been a tremendous work in order to keep the rooms in their original appearance. The breakfast was in a historical room, and served by a fantastic lady.
Review 34:The chateau has been in the same family for 25 generations. The current owner, Count Laurent du Coral, gives guests a personal tour of the chateau and an orientation including suggestions for dining and touring in the area. The entire staff are all extremely helpful and courteous. We really enjoyed the large breakfast. We extended our stay from 2 to 4 days because we found the chateau experience so charming.
Review 35:N/A
Review 36:The warm welcome and a genuine interest in the well-being of the guest. Good suggestions as to how to spend the 4 days while we stayed there. A most interesting building and beautiful surroundings
Review 37:Our stay was pleasant. We enjoyed the atmosphere and history of the castle. It gave us a sense of history. There is a charm which hotels lack. Also personalized service. We will return.
Review 38:There was only one restaurant close by the chateau so most nights we had to drive into St Jean de Luz.
Review 39:Lovely historic chateau in a beautiful area with very helpful staff. The owner welcomes you and shows you round, and gives you ideas for local visits. Lovely grounds and swimming pool.
Review 40:A good base to tour the area, very pleasent surroundings brought up todate without losing its sense of history & charm. The owner could not bemore helpful also the staff were very freindly. A very restful few days.
Review 41:The welcome was exceptionally warm - which more than made up for thepoor weather during our brief stay. The region has such variety andcharm I am hopeful that we will return. I would recommend Chateaud'Urtubie and would be very happy to stay there again.
Review 42:We felt that the ambiance of the Chateau, was most enjoyable. Thelocation offered easy access to Hendaye and St Jean de Luz, both reallydelightful seaside towns. At Hendaye there is a beautiful stretch ofheadland which has been created as a nature reserve. We were also verypleased with the friendly welcome and information of what is around.
Review 43:The Chateau had been in the family for several centuries. This was a14th centry castel designated as a historic site in the south of France. The owner met us and provided a person l tour of the common areas, andour room. He had prepared a portfolio of recommended activities tailoredfor the legnth of our stay. The owner inquired numerious time as to anyneeds we might have. Our room was located in the tower keep. It was aunique experience staying in a facility with modern accomodations whilemaintaining original archetictual structure jncluding a moat.
Review 44:Large room, very comfortable bed, charming staff
Review 45:Nothing. A delightful stay.
Review 46:Most everything.
Review 47:Everything
Review 48:A unique stay in this wonderful chateau. It was amazing to be met by the Count and shown round his house. Thoroughly recommend staying here.
Review 49:Wonderful grounds & history all brought to life with the chateau's owner on site. Highly recommend!
Review 50:Nothing to complain about
Review 51:We loved the atmosphere of staying in a actual castle, and the price was excellent as well. The staff did a fantastic job as well.
Review 52:The grounds were beautiful. The history of the chateau is very interesting. Fun to stay in and convenient to the region.
Review 53:Road noise. A great shame.
Review 54:Almost everything and found the introduction by our host to be most interesting.
