Reviews for The Star Hotel

Review 1:Very friendly and helpful staff. Got a good price for a double room with a great breakfast through booking.com. Hotel is basic but it is clean. It was everything we needed for a one night stay. Very handy for Aviemore.

Review 2:Only downside was TV in room could not get a chanel and en-suite radiator did not work.

Review 3:Value for money for an overnight stay. Bar staff very friendly and attentive.

Review 4:Unfortunately no wifi signal in rooms, only get it in bar and reception areas.

Review 5:Very good with my dog, friendly staff, food lovely at breakfast which was included in room price.

Review 6:Hotel does seem a bit stuck in a time-warp but it's no big deal. Plus points easily outweigh that.

Review 7:Friendly staff, decent food, relaxed atmosphere in the bar and great value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here on a return visit to Kingussie.

Review 8:Slight shame that breakfast on Sunday didn't start til 8am - we had to wolf down some toast and head off, as we had a busy day planned.

Review 9:Nice central location in Kingussie, quite handy for Aviemore. Friendly and comfortable, excellent value, great for a group of friends looking for beds for the night when away walking/running/skiing or whatever Sociable bar, good chippy over the road, plentiful parking Also handy for the train station

Review 10:bathroom dirty and small. No one at front desk-she was in bar. cost same as much nicer properties. band playing in bar below our room. I could go on

Review 11:location was ok in center of town

Review 12:One of Our bedrooms (No 11) had a bright street light outside the window. Curtains need to be far thicker. Pillows could be much better.

Review 13:What a lovely welcome we received! Rooms were a good size. A hearty breakfast, with very friendly waiting staff. It was a good stop for a weekend away in the Highlands, we would go back.

Review 14:There was a streetlight flashing intermittently outside our window, but that's not the hotel's fault.

Review 15:Friendly helpful staff, good value bar meals, nice breakfast.

Review 16:Unfortunately could only get WiFi in the hotel lobby, but that wasn't a problem

Review 17:Room was nice, bed was comfy, Easy to work TV Staff were so lovely Breakfast was great Fantastic Price for one night stay Retro style, slightly old fashioned but that gave the place a bit of character.

Review 18:not a bad experience but the hotel room did not have a shower, only a bath. the cold water tap in the bath did not work while we were there. also a lack of power points, we had to swap plugs for different items.

Review 19:the star hotel is situated in a quiet town but close to the cairngorm mountains and the whisky trail. also not too far from the famous loch ness and it's monster. good breakfast.

Review 20:This has been mentioned previously, but it was a little disappointing to not have a shower of any description to wash your hair! However the hotel gave us the keys to another room to use the shower in there.

Review 21:We thought the staff were very polite and helpful and attended to any need asked of them. The food was good at night and tasty breakfasts each day.

Review 22:Room was rather small with small screen 14 inch television and situated four flights of stairs up with no lift. Despite this it had everything for a short stay and hotel location was great.

Review 23:Staff throughout were excellent - cheery and very friendly. The food was very good both in the restaurant for breakfast and in the evening in the bar lounge. Entertainment in the lounge bar was also excellent. Free car parking available to the rear of hotel.

Review 24:The hotel is old but very friendly. We felt very comfortable here and the locals were lovely. Great prices, clean and the food was excellent. Staff were very helpful and welcoming.

Review 25:Wifi (only in public areas) was dodgy! Don't book the family room (12a) if you want a quiet night as it is at the front of the hotel overlooking the road junction (noisy!) and above the bar where there was very loud live music until 11/11.30pm on all 3 of the nights that we stayed :-((

Review 26:Inexpensive evening meals - bar menu or set restaurant menu (£15 for 3 courses with choice of 3 dishes for each course) - but you had to book and sit down between 6.30 and 7pm. Service was good but pretty basic.

Review 27:Stayed in this hotel 20 years ago and I've since lost all of my hair and most of my teeth whereas this hotel hasn't changed one bit.

Review 28:Great base for Aviemore, Rothiemurchus and Cairngorm

Review 29:Bar meals take 90 mins and turn up burnt. Room was tiny, mold in the bathroom and walls were paper thin, I could hear every word spoken next door. I couldn't wait to leave.

Review 30:Breakfast was good.

Review 31:There is no Wifi in the rooms, and the wifi available in the lounge was very poor. The room only had a bath and no shower.

Review 32:Location and breakfast were good

Review 33:Faded decor, someone's dirty knickers behind the radiator, porridge like wallpaper paste, no decent beer in bar, friend's first room had no cold water, it was like "Life on Mars".

Review 34:It got us out the rain.

Review 35:Bath with hose for attachment as a shower

Review 36:Small comfortable hotel. Adequate for my one night visit. Room small but adequate. Needs a bit of T.l.C. But for the price was good. Good breakfast and friendly staff.

Review 37:room a big small for a large bloke with motorcycle gear - but most single rooms are a bit small and it wasn't the smallest.

Review 38:Price, location, staff, has parking, food

Review 39:Friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us,and that it catered to pets.great location with a touch of history. Close to everything we planned to see

Review 40:Room was like something from 1970's and very expensive. Also the family room we were given was above the bar so had music pumping into our room until midnight.

Review 41:Breakfast was ok and Kingussie is a nice little town with lovely surroundings

Review 42:Room was needing a good clean very dusty cobwebs on ceiling towels were not changed they were folded wet and placed back on bed bucket in room was not emptied for two days

Review 43:Hotel is in very poor condition. Rooms are extremely small. Quality of breakfast is terrible. There is no wifi in rooms, only a very poor signal in common areas.

Review 44:On arrival we discovered they did not start breakfast until 8.30. We were offered a poached egg at 7.30 but decided not to bother. The hotel though clean had a dark run down look about it. We were told dinner was served from 6pm on. Having stood outside a locked restaurant door for 20 minutes watching the staff on the other side we opted for fish and chips across the road. Overall not a good experience. The car park is also part of the building site next door. The rear door to which was locked at 7am when we left making for a bit of a hike down the street. .

Review 45:The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet.

Review 46:The facilities within the room need updated. The TV didn't work as the signal was poor and there was no shower - just a bath. Also the bed was old and tired (which was how I felt after sleeping in it for a night).

Review 47:The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The location of the hotel is good - Kingussie is a lovely little village.

Review 48:The view from our room is very nice, but there's a big mirror in front of the window. It blocked more than half of the view. I don't like this big mirror. There's no WiFi in the room. Weak WiFi in the restaurant.

Review 49:Staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good! Location is good, near to the Rail station. Clean kettle. There's live music in the bar at night.

Review 50:Photos on the website don't represent the reality. They are just fake. Rooms are just ugly, old forniture, there was smoke smell everywhere. Too expensive. Absolutely not a 3 star hotel. Wifi totally fair.

Review 51:The hotel looked dated and their were a smell in the public rooms don not go in on a Tuesday night the Bar is taken over by bingo and we were told we could not use bar this was later denied.

Review 52:Room tiny, wet towels left on end of bed when room made up bathroom very tiny no shower facility bath only, Food breakfast was basic cheap pub food, only had one evening meal was fair to average

Review 53:Hotel a bit tired looking, in need of some renovation, bath cold water tap not working and no shower. Food reasonable price wise, chips over cooked.

Review 54:Staff very friendly and welcoming. Central location and parking. Very nice breakfast. Good lounge entertainment

Review 55:Disasterous! Breakfast was from the cheapest ingredients, the sausagewas the worst I've ever had.Shower sometimes doesen't work at all! Huge flys in the rooms, in some rooms their corpses in the lamp cover next to the bed!!! DISGUSTING Communal areas are like they were transported from eastern Europe from the communist period. Noone would spend time there with their friends! The rooms are supertiny! Our worst accomodation!

Review 56:Nothing

Review 57:The hotel smelled of stale smoke as soon as we entered the hotel. The staff seemed like us checking in was a bother, every floorboard up to our room squeaked, the room decor really needed updating. There was no hot water our first night there, the wifi dropped out constantly, the walls are very thin and could hear everything that was going on in the adjacent/joining rooms. All in all we found the price charged for the room to be unrealistic to what you actually get for your money.

Review 58:Star hotel- Rooms were not clean. There were spiders in the room, we killed 4 of them ourselves. There were alive flies in the room and there were dead flies inside the lamp case in the room. Sheets were used before because there were hair on them from before.

Review 59:the bedrooms are a bit dated and could do with an upgrade but thats just my taste, kingussie itself is starting to resemble a ghost town most of the shops and pubs are all closed down ,great shame.

Review 60:very helpful, polite and friendly staff, good breakfast and a good choice of evening meals at good prices,if you are not too fussy its a good place to stop, close enough base for touring the highlands or if you like walking and at the right price.

Review 61:Had a nice meal in the bar but wasnt very well attended to. Had to ask for the bill after waiting 15 mins after our meal and we were not asked if we wanted a dessert

Review 62:Affordable accomodation in a nice quiet location

Review 63:Bar terrace is parking lot (it is OK, we are in Scotland) WiFi playing up - not accessible in every room

Review 64:Shows at weekend - music live, good entertainment Pub in the hotel is cheap Food from restaurant is good Rooms are large enough Location: honestly nothing more central Staff nice and helpful

Review 65:My room was cramped but that's a minor gripe given the price and my overall opinion of the hotel.

Review 66:Kingussie is a good place to stay if Aviemore is full! This place is great - friendly and very reasonably priced.

Review 67:Was there any wifi?? It could have been cleaner. Old beddings, overall old facilities/ hotel.

Review 68:Location, since it was a few yards far from the train station and this within walking distance. Also in the heart if the town and with free parking. Good breakfast. Really really friendly and helpful staff. Decent breakfast.

Review 69:Had the room above the bar and had to listen to techno and patron conversations til 1 am. Everything was old and there was mold in the bathroom. I will not being staying there again.

Review 70:Breakfast was very good.

Review 71:All the staff were very friendly and the service at breakfast was first class with ample to eat. If you were going to be late coming in at night you were able to get a key to let yourself into the hotel.

Review 72:Room was small, bad or no Wifi, bathroom without main light, poor plastic bathtub, detachable rubber plastic shower hose with rubber double taps grips, almost without spray.

Review 73:Location is good, near bus stop and railway station, friendly staff, nice breakfast, very warm and clean rooms

Review 74:Nothing disliked.

Review 75:It was ideally situated just off the A9 and very handy to provide an overnight stop en route to Inverness. It provided for all my needs and ticked all my boxes. I left about 0745 hours, which was before breakfast started at 0830, but that did not pose any problems for me. It is an old style, traditional village hotel, which appears well cared for and has character.

Review 76:Location, comfortable bed, good value for the price. Did the job after a cold blustery day up on the hills, and Kingussie is a very likeable / livable wee town.

Review 77:The bathroom was small, and the water from the hot-water tap was only lukewarm.

Review 78:The staff was friendly, the food was delicious, the room was cosy and comfortable, and the building was very centrally located. I very much enjoyed my stay, and I would be willing to stay at the property again in the future.

Review 79:Hotel could do with some revamp, ensuite adequate but not inviting.

Review 80:Friendly, welcoming staff. Very helpful. I requested an earlier breakfast and I was accommodated, no problem.

Review 81:No problems. Lounge and bar needed makeover.

Review 82:Free upgrade from single to twin room for me and my son (ie we both had free upgrades). Clean rooms and linen. New shower units. Good breakfast (did not take dinner there). Good, attentive service.

Review 83:Poor tv signal and limited wifi No meals after 7:45 on a Sunday wasn't notified so we had to eat elsewhere

Review 84:Good food, slept well & warm welcome. It is what it is - cheap and not so cheerful but not to be avoided.

Review 85:My towel wasn't replaced in 4 days so was pretty rough by the end of the stay. There was a radiator for drying it, but I typically forgot.

Review 86:If you're after a rough and ready, non-pretentionious place to stay, then the star is for you. I went there with 3 mates for a walking weekend, so it worked ok. With walking and climbing gear filling up the room guilt free. Would have fretted about it in a prissy b&b. The ensuite had a bath and a contraption to make the taps into a shower. Only the cold tap on the bath didn't work, so plugged the contraption into the sink taps to get cold water into the bath. The water wasn't hot enough anyway, so the contraption wasn't needed. If you fret about stuff like that, don't stay at the star. But for us it provided a good laugh. The breakfast was fine, except the sausage was 99.96% bread. Certainly not a waitrose sausage darling. We paid a little under 50 per night, which felt a little high given the level of quality. The bar area is spacious and basic and they have an ok selection of drinks and whiskeys etc. Worth seeing the rhod Gilbert sketch on red hen in the man with the battenberg tatto to see why this place is ok (for the right person)!

Review 87:Its in need of a makeover but the staff make up for that. Also no vegetarian options on the menu but dont be put off as there are places to eat locally.

Review 88:Loved the clean comfortable beds. Clean fluffy towels every day and plenty hot water for showers.entertainment friday and saturday was very good but the Stars greatest assets are the Staff who were all very friendly and helpful.

Review 89:Dated look and feel to the hotel. Fine for me on my own but would Not be a hotel for the whole family!

Review 90:Central location, welcoming people, good price. Fine for a one night stay if on a budget.

Review 91:Rather dated and rundown establishment. Old style TV with freeview box that hadn't been tuned properly and poor reception. Room could have done with a better clean as it was dusty. Bathroom, whilst clean had an overpowering smell of cleaning products and had some damp.

Review 92:Breakfast was good and staff were friendly. Was relatively cheap.

Review 93:the was loud music playing at the bar until midnight. there was a detachable shower instead of a regular one. it didn't really work well.

Review 94:the room was clean and cosy, the location is pretty

Review 95:I thought there wasn't enough to chose from on the menu and the design of my particular bathroom (room 24) was a bit awkward in terms of placing.

Review 96:The staff were smiley and helpful, the food quality was AMAZING, the bedrooms were comfortable and our view was nice. There was a place for people to smoke and the toilets were high quality :)

Review 97:The room size was quite small so moving around was a bit of a challenge, but that's often the case in uk.. I was on my own in a double, mightbe a problem with 2 people.. Maybe they have larger rooms too..

Review 98:Good base for exploring the east of Cairngorms Nationalpark, FortWilliam isn't far away either, so you would have covered that aswell... Very nice people running the hotel, great customer service, always friendly and helpful, nice breakfast, nice and clean rooms..Good price...

Review 99:It's creaky floorboards I know it's an old hotel but they were quite noisey it's also very dark, could do with brightening up .

Review 100:The hotel is in a good location ,with friendly staff who were helpful.

Review 101:It smelt quite bad which never really went and the bathrooms were very dirty. They had live music which went on quite late and disturbed some of the guests on the 1st floor. Strangely I did grow an affection for the place though, it had a certain charm

Review 102:The staff were very friendly and it's a good location to access the cairngorms

Review 103:The decor is dated and tired. Needs brought into the 21st century a wee bit!

Review 104:Staff were so good, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We were made very welcome and so was our dog! The room was clean and bed very comfy

Review 105:Dirty bedroom window. No hair dryer. Mouldy shower cubicle.

Review 106:Helpful, friendly staff. Easy parking. Clean bedding. Comfortable bed. Decent breakfast. Warm room.

Review 107:The hardness of the beds, and no internet in bedroom is a problem, for people who need to book ahead to the next night. Having to go down stairs for internet connection was a pain, couldn't skype home for other people around trying to get internet themselves.

Review 108:Great food, good value dinner, great breakfast and staff very friendly.

Review 109:The room decor was a bit dated but was clean and tidy. Not great for people with walking difficulties as there are a few stairs,l didn't see any lifts.

Review 110:The price and the food were good. The staff were very polite and helpful.

Review 111:Not really suitable for families, food no variety, breakfast was boring, just not good for anyone with kids my son is two and he just wanted to go home!

Review 112:Nothing I think it needs to be closed down

Review 113:Bed cover was covered in dog hair so obviously hadn't been changed since last occupant.

Review 114:Price was a motivator to book, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff

Review 115:Room too close to traffic lights and high street Noise from high street lorries Decor in room needs updating but clean though No proper shower only leaky rubber cord shower No shower curtains Cold tap not running in sink in bathroom

Review 116:Low cost bill Very good home made food Centrally located and ideal for tour of Scottish Highlands

Review 117:Staying at the Star was one of the most memorable nights my Husband and I had in Scotland. We got in late, had a quick dinner before the kitchen closed and after went into the back bar where we met several local people that we shared a fun and fabulous evening with. Friendly, fun loving, fantastic people. We had so much fun. The hotel was great, as was our dinner, but the people in the bar,,,we love you! Thank you for such a great time!

Review 118:No breakfast. As it was a Sunday morning they didnt start serving until 08.30 and I needed to be away prior to this. There wasn't even an offer of a simple breakfast to be left out for me, despite the fact I had paid for a room and breakfast. Hardly good customer care. Not even an apology.

Review 119:The staff member in the morning was very bright cheery abd trying to be as helpful as possible which was quite different to the staff member greeting me the previous night, who seemed quite irritated I had disturbed him from the live music in the bar.

Review 120:Friendly welcoming staff, no pretentiousness. Old fashioned hotel but clean and comfortable. And, given its proximity to Aviemore, where prices tend to be sky-high, exceptional value. Food in bar was basic but good.

Review 121:Staff friendly on arrival

Review 122:A relaxed atmosphere and welcoming experience for me and my dog, good food and comfortable accomodation

Review 123:The staff were incredibly friendly. Nothing was a problem for them.

Review 124:The value

Review 125:Friendly staff and great location

Review 126:nothing

Review 127:great room on the corner with lovely soft towels

Review 128:Whole place needs updating.

Review 129:Staff were lovely.

Review 130:Very nice hotel staff. Comfortable rooms. I really recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Kingussie

Review 131:Staff
