Reviews for Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa
Review 1:The staff were hit and miss. Some rude, some indifferent and some good. Overall, too many staff members spoke very poor English. Some of them really did a good job, but it felt like there was a lack of coherence and leadership. The food was good, but not 2 rosette standard. The pre dessert, for example, was identical to one of the desserts on the menu on both evenings, so a few in our party had lemon curd followed by lemon tart with lemon curd and peanut cream followed by peanut cream... I know it's a way for the kitchen to use up, but I wouldn't expect this sort of repetition on the menu in a 2 rosette restaurant. The breakfast was seriously average. The kitchen needs to up their game and move with the times. Fruit cocktail, rice crispies and a full English to match the worst greasy spoon cafe will not do the trick. Breakfast is the chance to wow the guests. It doesn't take any more effort - just some newer, fresher ideas. I felt like I had been transported back to a well known hotel in Torquay in the 1990's... We came down five minutes before end of breakfast, and were rushed and made to feel like we were being a nuisance. 9.30 is very early to end breakfast - I am on holiday!!The hotel has the potential to be great - the location is second to none and the building itself is fabulous. But unfortunately it is dated, both in decor and in the management style. Having a dress code in the restaurant that dictates no trainers, blue jeans or t-shirts gets tricky when you are away with two teenagers. It's a dated concept which probably worked back in the 80's, but this day and age it should be avoided at all costs! A young lad will look a lot smarter in a pair of jeans and some nice trainer style shoes than he will in a ill fitting suit borrowed from someone for the occasion. If this hotel wants to attract a younger crowd it needs to move into the 21st century and be less stuffy.
Review 2:Beautiful location. Nice dining room, hall and sitting rooms with fires going. Comfortable bed. Quiet bedroom. The spa was excellent.
Review 3:The weather, gales and serious flooding
Review 4:The spa and the food. Storm Desmond tried but could not ruin the weekend we had. Stayed in the hotel apart from very wet dog walks and used the spa a lot. Great birthday weekend.
Review 5:Rooms did not live up to expectations bathroom tv did not work Fruit in room was past edible. I expected these details to not be over looked for the price charged
Review 6:Venue was really nice. Food was of a good standard.
Review 7:The building is in poor shape and needs a total refurbishment; the staff are 90% Eastern European and unfriendly. it is a very poor hotel compared to 40 years ago when i last stayed here
Review 8:closeness to lake. Breakfast
Review 9:For us it was along walk to the spa and bistro. but we would ask for a ground floor, spa bedroom with terrace next time.
Review 10:The ambience of the hotel, it is beautiful, the facilities and the informal bistro dining at our age we can not eat a heavy meal at night
Review 11:It really is VERY expensive for what it is. Dinner is desperately pretentious - and the only one of the seven (yes, "seven") courses that was even vaguely satisfying in terms of quantity was the cheese! Some of the vegtables weren't just al dente - they were RAW. In summary, dinner was tasty but inadequate. They really need to give a bit of attention to making sure the components of the breakfast buffet don't run out. And sliced ham and sliced mousetrap don't make a convincing cold collation
Review 12:Hot and cold running flunkies everywhere. Staff always said hello. Grounds are excellent
Review 13:The room we were allocated was really small. There was a lack of storage space and we felt that we lived out of our suitcase for the duration of our 4 night stay. Menu in the fine dining restaurant was disappointing, the choice was practically the same each evening. The starters and sweets were the same every night.
Review 14:We really liked the spa and enjoyed the treatments we had.
Review 15:Found it just a tad expensive. Would go again if cheaper as live quite near. Never mind, was a lovely experience!
Review 16:Situated in a beautiful area. Imposing building! Loved the outdoor hot tub. Liked the old-world feel of the hotel.
Review 17:Shower too small for adults High prices with rooms that don't match the Premier Inn Fine Dining--not!! -over seasoned and pretentious
Review 18:Stunning location Unable to recognise and cope with objections
Review 19:Regretted only table d'hote menu in main restaurant though led to believe on arrival that there was an a'la carte. Bistro OK but did not have the ambience of the restaurant.
Review 20:Location and informality.
Review 21:Room a little dark. No air conditioning in room. Didn't like the shower door arrangement on the bath.
Review 22:Tranquility. Lovely SPA. Free WiFi. As a honeymoon couple the welcome we received on arrival, free room upgrade with champagne and chocolates in room.
Review 23:Being given a dark gloomy room, overheated and rucked carpet with pushed together single beds. Had to ask if another room available and thankfully there was and it made the one night break enjoyable.
Review 24:Proximity to Spa and food. Service in dining room good.
Review 25:The menu in the main restaurant was a little fussy for me. I sruggled to find a starter I would like. I tried the cod ravioli but wasn't keen on it.
Review 26:The pool and outside jacuzzi The decor, friendly staff, ambience, food Games, log fire, views
Review 27:On this occasion I had booked a twin club room but was put in a spa room, to top it off the lock on the door broke and we had to move rooms, which unfortunately was into a poorer room than before. It was smaller and the pillows were hard and uncomfortable. There was a fridge in the room which woke us up throughout the night constantly turning on and off.I enquired at reception about the room but was told it was the luck of the draw where you were put.
Review 28:This is my third visit to this Hotel and this is because I have always enjoyed my stays here with my husband. This time I had brought my sister for a break.
Review 29:Only minor criticism is that woodsmoke from the open fires in the older part of the hotel can drift up to the rooms occasionally. We could smell it on some of our clothes when we got home. A minor problem.
Review 30:Practically everything. Room was outstanding with probably the best view we've had from a hotel anywhere in the world. The staff were really lovely with us, from reception to restaurant. The restaurant was excellent, breakfasts very good. Spa facilities superb, good pool, enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi (even in Feb!) We treated ourselves to a massage which was deep, soothing, and very relaxing. Again the facilities were very impressive and the staff professional and friendly. A memorable couple of days stay and a treat after a day's hiking in the fells. Loved the alpacas who lived in the field behind the hotel (and whom you can take for a walk - apply at reception)
Review 31:Damp smell in the original coutyard suite of rooms
Review 32:Billiard room, outdoor heated bubble pool, immediate upgrade after faults in original room, caring, polite and efficient staff and the location
Review 33:Price. Some sub standard food items such as breakfast sausages very average, unseasoned cold mushrooms house wine awful (possibly off from day before). Rabbit was over done. spaghetti dish served in bowl was sat in water, simple things that I feel needed to be reviewed to keep up with standards else where. Small rooms but great period features. Spa gown has holes in.
Review 34:Location. Snow. Service. Spa quality. Atmospheric. Staff great. Log burning fires.
Review 35:Took my wife for a mid pregnancy relaxation. I am very pleased I chose Armathwaite Hall. The room was excellent with a lovely view, all staff very friendly and good service. The spa treatment was particularly good. I would highly recommend!
Review 36:Breakfast in the main dining room was disappointing. Fresh fruit salad did not taste fresh. The Cumbrian cooked breakfast tasted as though it had been kept warm for a length of time with only the poached egg being cooked to order.
Review 37:Spa /pool /outdoor heated pool was spacious & well designed. Attention to detail in the comfortable room-e.g. turn down service in evening (bins emptied, extra 'biccies' etc) Brasserie evening menu -new chef bringing fresh & tasty meals Very friendly & professional staff.
Review 38:no control over heating in bedroom and window opening extremely difficult to open six course meal left something to be desired in parts handle on wardrobe coming off limited space in en-suite
Review 39:Quiet unassuming ambience comfortable quiet rooms excellent shower very comfortable beds very clean superb small swimming pool with helpful staff
Review 40:Booked a twin room but was given a double room. The beds were "unzipped" to separate but still placed together. With my daughter so not a huge problem just not expected.
Review 41:Spa facilities, loung areas and food.
Review 42:That we had to go home. :(
Review 43:10 years ago we got married at Armathwaite and it was perfect!!! If u are wanting to get married there do it they know what they are doing. We booked Armathwaite again for our 10 year anniversary and we loved it. The best thing was remembering the smell of the open fire and having a glass of sherry. We had our meal in the lake room staff was lovely food is excellent as always and the setting is breath taking. We will always go back to Armathwaite.
Review 44:Not only was the setting picturesque, the hotel itself absolutely stunning but the staff were incredible! There were a number of people that clearly often stayed there and the staff made them feel like family. We had the same treatment. The staff remembered our names every day and couldn't do enough for us.
Review 45:Coming Home!
Review 46:Welcome at Reception Friendliness of ALL staff Atmosphere was terrific Food was sublime Dining room was cosy and in a beautiful setting Xmas decor SUPERB
Review 47:We had dinner in both Bistro and dining room. The bistro we found rather cold, though the food was okay. Although the formality of the dining room was a little too much. Our room was well equipped though rather small. We were in a club room.
Review 48:The Hall is a beautiful building with many great features. The situation of the hall in the grounds was lovely. Having a walk close by, enabling us to leave the driving for the day, was a real bonus. The food at every meal was very good. The spa was excellent.
Review 49:I booked the room for my sister and her husband. On their return, they were full of praise for the hotel, staff and food. They are wanting to return in the new year and had a truly wonderful time. It was a special birthday and the staff made it an enjoyable and memorable stay. Thank you so much for your kindness. Mrs Yarker
Review 50:told that the room had been upgraded but only difference seemed to be the twin beds pushed together under a double headboard! Room still nice though. Log fires all smoked us out of the lounges on both nights.
Review 51:Lovely spa facilities and food
Review 52:The room was well equipped but would have like a larger room, but it did the job, cosy and warm
Review 53:We really enjoyed our stay, loved all the Xmas trees and decorations, made it so Christmassy, and very welcoming. The staff were superb, from checking in to leaving. Food fantastic, just wish there had been vegetables with main course. The spa, pool, gym outdoor area fabulous. Would love to spend Xmas or new year there.
Review 54:Rather disappointed with the Brasserie food. Some dishes could do with attention to detail - peeling the potatoes for the chips would be a good start. Also need to get the dishes out in a timely manner when 'busy'.
Review 55:The hotel is very comfortable with cosy lounges and very well appointed public areas. Spa facilities are excellent.
Review 56:- The weather (but you can't blame them for that!). - Our rooms were plush, but a little on the small side (not much circulation space).
Review 57:Outdoor infinity jacuzzi. Comfy relaxer loungers in spa. Fabulously grand building. - Helpful and cheerful staff. - Excellent food. We ate in the restaurant on both nights and were all very impressed with both the setting and the food quality. - Real fires in lounges. - Little private patio area outside with seats straight from our bedroom.
Review 58:Can't think of a thing I didn't like.
Review 59:We were upgraded to a lovely room, having booked a brasserie break and we were delighted with our view. The staff were all very helpful and the room was quiet, the spa, especially the outdoor hot tub and sauna were a very nice experience. Food was good. Loved the Christmas decorations and the log fire.
Review 60:Boasted fine tea but only provided typhoo and nescafe sachets in room. Room unbearably hot during the night, had to locate radiator in early hours to switch it off. The volume on theTV in the bathroom would not turn down to an acceptable level.
Review 61:Beautiful Location Fantastic Spa facilities Very nice food Lovely room Great atomosphere
Review 62:We thought the size of the room we occupied was far to small for the price charged( £200.00 ) and was overstuffed with furniture.
Review 63:We liked the location and the food was excellent,
Review 64:Amazing views, wonderful country estate hotel. Very comfortable and relaxing. Loved the alpacas (or were they llamas?) and the sheep. The deputy manager worked very hard and sorted us out when we had a problem with our room. Very impressed.
Review 65:Staff friendly. Hotel itself is amazing. Fantastic old building set in wonderful grounds. Spa was one of the best I've been to. Room in hotel cleaned to good standard. Meals in lakeside restaurant were all superb. Relaxation areas in hotel clean and comfortable. Lovely places all around to sit and talk, drink or just read. Beautifully maintained grounds and in the hotel itself. Will be back, best hotel we have been to in a long time that hits 10/10. Thank you Danni for the time to chat to us on the history off Armathwaite , your hospitality and the warm welcome when we arrived.
Review 66:What's not to like? -nothing we can think of!
Review 67:A real gem with oodles of old fashioned charm and with great up to date service by a happy cohesive staff team who had a lovely balance of friendliness and superb service in the best of English style.
Review 68:Glass of Sherry on arrival Large comfortable bed Attentiveness of the staff Ease by which you could get everything you wanted Food and dining room views
Review 69:TV in bathroom didnt work and the shower head was loose
Review 70:Spa was lovely, food was very tasty, drink selection was above average. I slept very well, my wife saod se woke up a few times in the night. The room was very quiet, there was a wedding on so i thought it would get loud but didnt hear a thing from our room. Would go back.
Review 71:bath was too small disappointed that the tea and coffee was Nescafe and PG tips - I would have expected a touch more ie AHH own brand or another brand to give a more personal feel
Review 72:a lovely upgrade as it was special birthday occasion fantastic view and location and brilliant staff attentiveness
Review 73:The breakfast and dinner were a bit disappointing. There was not enough variety in the buffet during breakfast, and the menu was the same every morning. Dinner was not as good as we expected.
Review 74:A beautiful building, magnificent view of the lake from the room and from the restaurant. the spa was wonderful- a great hot tub in the middle of the garden and a nice sauna. We loved the afternoon high tea in the lounge.
Review 75:Nothing! I really love this hotel!
Review 76:The wonderful lake view room - a lovely birthday surprise. Also the little touches which show the staff really care about their guests; I was delighted to receive a birthday card & chocolates from the manager. A thoughtful extra which I really enjoyed! The gourmet meal in the Lake View restaurant was delicious with excellent service. I also had a very nice spa treatment & enjoyed the pool & fabulous hot- tub!
Review 77:breakfast was just enough 2 pieces of bacon and sausages would be better bathroom was dirty under shower screen toilets in main hotel ladies were complaing had no loo roll left in 2 of the cubicles
Review 78:wedding was brill and staff on top form room was nice location and surrondings are nice scenery
Review 79:The limit on pets. I have 3 dogs but sadly only two allowed.
Review 80:Everything, the rooms were luxurious, staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was amazing.
Review 81:The booking confirmation did not make it clear that dinner was included in the cost but this was not the fault of the hotel! The hotel resolved the problem to my satisfaction.
Review 82:The views and the quiet.
Review 83:The only disappointing aspect was the bedroom was claustrophobic.
Review 84:Overall excellent hotel and extremely well ran establishment. All staff polite and helpful, dining room staff especially. Very enjoyable food, spa area relaxing, views breathtaking.
Review 85:The weather was hot while we stayed at the hotel and we found it hard to sleep on the night as the room was far to hot. Maybe air conditioning in some of the higher rooms. Also our room was comfy but maybe could do with a refurbishment.
Review 86:The staff were very friendly and the hotel itself is nice, but the bar could do with being decorated. Wallpaper very oldfashioned. The breakfast was very nice and the views of Bassenthwaite Lake from the hotel were beautiful.
Review 87:No in-room safe. Main restaurant had dress code excluding jeans or trainers which prohibited us eating there with our daughter and boyfriend (both young professionals who chose not to dress formally for a mid-week dinner in the country! Had to confirm price with booking.com when we checked out as receptionist told us the total price (£240 for 2 nights) was the price per night. They did credit our account promptly when booking.com contacted them.
Review 88:Pleasant, well appointed room; excellent spa facilities in idyllic setting. Good food and friendly service in the brasserie. Beautiful grounds and comfortable lounges. Good breakfast with cold buffet and hot food served to order. Would stay there again.

Review 96:The country setting looking out to the lake is fantastic.
Review 97:Not so clean room. Lake directions confusing. Lake in this area is private, thus you will not be able to stroll there!
